CityCastChicago had a couple episodes on food this week (Well, one was good places to eat at O'Hare, which I don't care about because I hate flying.) and they had an episode on The Dining Room at Kendall College. The CityCast crew said it was good, but I'm curious, have you eaten there? I feel like you've mentioned eating college-run establishments, but that might've been McDonald's?
Both, actually! The McDonalds at Hamburger University is in Fulton Market and I was there recently; it's a bit swank and sometimes has unusual foods (last time it was onion rings!) but mooooostly it's just a very upscale normal McDonalds.
But Kendall! I've had several meals at Kendall College's dining room -- it's one of my parents' favorite places to get a meal when they’re in town, because it's really good gourmet food, spectacular service, and a reasonable price. R and I also ate there once as a treat from my parents.
I skipped the episode (I saw it, went "Oh, that's Kendall, good for them" and moved on) so I don't know what they said, but I can recommend it wholeheartedly. The last time we were there, the president of the college was wooing donors at the next table over, which was hilarious to me and impressive to my parents.
The dining room used to be on Goose Island and now is downtown, so I'm not sure if the space is still as fun as it used to be, but when it was on Goose Island the entry area usually had a display of the pastry program's cakes, along with old cooking implements and industrial machinery. Great time all round.
And now that I know it's super close -- last I had heard it was going to be moving further out, so I'm thrilled to see it's on Michigan -- I might have to go have a meal! If I do I will certainly report back.

REFRESH - “Greek Geek” 2015.
I made a bunch of songs in like a week in my aunt’s attic on the west side of Chicago, and I later put it out as “Jan 15” on bandcamp. This song’s funny! It’s just a light hearted tale of frat life. Enjoy! ✌🏽

The Children of William and Lydia Coleman Mitchell
Tumblr media
From time to time, I have mentioned, most if not all, of the children of William Mitchell and Lydia Coleman Mitchell.  However, I have not listed them and their accomplishments all together.  While brief, I thought this would be nice to help highlight Maria Mitchell’s siblings.
Andrew Mitchell (1814 – 1871) A sailor who ran off to sea at sixteen, served in the US Navy during the Civil War, became a farmer, and worked at one point with his youngest brother, Henry, in some of his U.S. Coast Survey work.
Sally Mitchell Barney (1816 – 1876) An excellent celestial navigator who assisted her father with his surveying of Nantucket that was printed as a map in 1838.  Sally was also a teacher.
Maria Mitchell (1818 – 1889) America’s first woman astronomer, a founder of the Association for the Advancement of Woman, the first female professor of astronomy in the U.S. at Vassar College.  First American awarded a gold medal from the King of Denmark for her discovery of a telescopic comet in 1847.
Anne Mitchell Macy (1820 – 1900) A teacher of languages at the Coffin School on Winter Street – she was called the “Mistress of Seven Foreign Tongues” – and a member of the Association for the Advancement of Woman.
Francis “Frank” Mitchell (1823 – 1891) Frank would move the farthest from Nantucket and his family.  He and his wife, Ellen, settled in Chicago where they established a produce commission firm.
William Forster “Forster” Mitchell (1825 – 1892) An abolitionist and educator, Forster would serve as Haverford College Superintendent, supervisor and teacher in the Freedmen’s Aid Commission, and founding faculty member at Howard College (now University) where he taught tinsmithing in the Industrial Arts Department – a craft he learned from his uncle, Peleg Mitchell Jr.
Phebe Mitchell Kendall (1828 – 1907) An artist, Phebe opened a small art school on Nantucket, and travelled with her sister, Maria, to observe and paint two solar eclipses. Like her sisters, she was a member of the Association for the Advancement of Woman and she was the first woman to serve on the Cambridge, MA School Board.
Eliza Mitchell (1830 – 1833) The twin of Henry, she died at age 3.
Henry Mitchell (1830 – 1902) A US Coast Survey hydrographer, and a teacher at MIT, Henry was a founder of the National Geographic Society and participated in the design and construction of the Suez Canal.
Eliza Katherine “Kate” Mitchell Dame (1833 – 1907) The youngest and named after her deceased sister, Kate would move to Lynn, MA where many of the Mitchell family members would live or spend lengths of time – all gathered around their father, William, who had moved there with Maria in 1861.  Kate’s home became the center of the Mitchell family constellation.

Friends remember slain deputy as police question person of interest
Tumblr media
Kendal Wordlaw, sister of Rafael Wordlaw, stands with family, friends and co-workers of Rafael during a balloon release in memory of the 31-year-old in Chicago’s Fuller Park on Wednesday.
The off-duty Cook County sheriff’s deputy died in a shooting in Woodlawn early Tuesday after someone tried to rob him.
Gabriel Patton and Rafael Wordlaw were running late the day they met on the first day of their training with the Cook County sheriff’s office in February 2020.
When Patton’s bag of uniform clothes burst open, dumping shirts and pants to the floor, Wordlaw stopped to help him collect his things, and a friendship between the men was born.
The men bonded over their work, particularly in the early days of the pandemic.
Patton, now a sheriff’s deputy, described his friend and colleague Wordlaw, who was fatally shot in an apparent armed robbery early Tuesday, as genuine and hardworking.
“It’s like I lost a brother,” said, Patton, 38.
Patton was among dozens of people who gathered in Fuller Park on the South Side Wednesday afternoon with red balloons to remember Wordlaw on the same day that Chicago police said they were questioning a person in the deputy’s shooting death.
Trendale Roberson, another colleague of Wordlaw’s, said they’d met on the first day of training and realized that they were both from the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side.
“To see a young Black man who made it out of what some people would call the hood, who graduated high school and graduated college, to lose his life to senseless violence — it hurts,” he said.
Roberson, Patton and others said they’d last seen Wordlaw just Thursday.
“If I’d known it was going to be our last conversation, I would have told him I loved him,” Roberson said.
“He always said the city was going to know his name. I just hate that it came this way.”
Hours before the gathering, Chicago police said a person was in custody and being questioned.
Shortly before 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, Wordlaw was off-duty at a gas station in the 500 block of East 67th Street when he was approached by someone, and an argument ensued.
The person he was arguing with pulled out a handgun and opened fire before fleeing on foot, police said.
Authorities said it appeared that Wordlaw was the target of an attempted robbery.
Later, when friends and family gathered on the park’s baseball diamond to let go of the balloons, Wordlaw’s aunt, Rosie Henry, spoke of holding onto her faith as her family navigated the loss.
Rafael “had a vision and a dream,” she said. “Humble spirit, kept peace around himself and anyone he came into contact with.”

6 and 25!
6. Episode of tv or webisode that defined the year for you?
this made me realize I definitely already did this one 😭 anything from succession or the newsreader was great, honestly. idk how to really define the year, everything all blurs together for me really
25. Did you create any characters (in games, art, or writing) this year? Describe one.
hm. I did have a succession oc I wanted to make for my kenstewy college fic; he'd be stewy's college boyfriend since I wanted to have an outside person for stewy to interact with so he could have a different perspective on what his relationship with kendall is like and what he wants it to be. I named him jamie spizanski, he's a medical student (ophthalmology) from chicago, and even just physically he's completely different from kendall; he's a beanpole, he's blonde, he's just very loud and excitable, he's a lot of fun to write and develop, really.

okay omg. so
Stewy’s parents were members of the upper middle-class, highly educated elite who came to the US in the early eighties to avoid the impact of the Iranian Revolution.
Stewy’s father is in banking and his mother is an academic (international relations?). They lived in Massachusetts for a year or so when Stewy was a toddler but eventually settled in New York for his father’s business. His dad is retired now, but his mom still teaches part-time at Barnard. Stewy grew up in a bilingual household, with both parents pretty much fluent in English. He speaks Farsi with his family.
Stewy has an older sister named Shirin, she is nine years his senior. They were both born in Tehran (where the family lived in an affluent neighbourhood), but they immigrated when Stewy (Sadegh, if we’re using his Farsi name) was still just an infant.
Stewy had a relatively stable childhood, with lots of money spent on his education and development. His relationship with his mom is good, although not as close as he might have liked as a child. He was outrageously spoilt by her, but she was often too busy with work to give him much quality time. She is someone he still goes to for advice, as she’s pragmatic and wildly intelligent.
He loves his sister, although their relationship has had its ups and downs. As children, Shirin was (rightfully) resentful of Stewy - he got the biggest bedroom, the best cuts of meat at dinner time, and was their parents’ ‘little prince’, whereas she (despite being smarter and more well-behaved) was so often overlooked and underestimated because of her gender. She gently bullied Stewy a lot when they were kids, and they were very competitive, especially as teens.
As adults, they have a good relationship, although they don’t see each other so often these days - Shirin trained as a lawyer, moved to Chicago for work, and now lives there with her husband and kids. She has two sons and a daughter, Stewy’s nephews and niece.
His relationship with his dad is more strained. His dad is quite similar to Logan (though nowhere near as emotionally abusive) and he had big expectations for his children, especially Stewy as his only son. Despite becoming very Westernised in a lot of ways, his dad is still firmly, proudly Muslim, and raised his kids with Islamic traditions and values. His parents and sister still practice Islam, but Stewy stopped as a teenager.
As you mentioned, Stewy being 40 and still unmarried has created some tension with his family, especially his dad. His dad - like Logan - often criticised Stewy for not being masculine enough. He, like Logan, disapproved of the relationship between Stewy and Kendall.
Stewy was always a bit of a clown and a rebel, and - especially as a teenager - he didn’t enjoy living in a quite a strict Islamic household. At fifteen, he started staying out late, drinking and smoking pot (with Kendall) and these nights often ended with both of them getting chewed out by Stewy’s dad.
Now, they rarely see one another except for on birthdays and holidays (Thanksgiving and Eid). Stewy’s dad put so much pressure on him throughout his childhood - to do well at school, to succeed at college, to do sports, to learn piano, to get married and be a ‘real man’, and now Stewy feels really distanced from him. He’ll go for lunch with his mom sometimes, but never his dad. He knows, deep down, that his dad still doesn’t really approve of him, his life, and his (queer) social circle.
Overall, he appreciates his family for giving him a good education and a privileged life but - like Kendall - he grew up always feeling as if he could never be the son his parents wanted. He rarely talks about his family, except to the closest of his friends (basically just Kendall). He prefers to distance himself from them and, instead, enjoy the life he’s created for himself.
please reblog with ur headcanons for stewy’s family bcuz i’ve heard a lot of different ideas and need to hear more

I am 24.
Im so far away from being financially stable with a part time job that lets me pay my bills
I went to therapy for a month but it costed too much but i should really go back and get on anxiety meds because it’s slowly poisoning me.
I rarely talk to my friends from Ohio. I mostly talk with taylor during reality tv airings but because I don’t drink we dont share common interests.
I dont talk to my dad anymore. After the BLM protests and Biden v Trump I realized he was never going to change. I’ve sacrificed enough energy to making sure i never stepped on egg shells and keep the peace but i couldnt do it anymore.
On brighter news
Ive resumed to my youth hobbies of playing video games. Currently Valorant & Overwatch are my favorite.
Started streaming on twitch but then quit like 7 months after.
Met my wonderful friends from the HAM community.
Travelled from Chicago to Texas with Kendall, Jake and Mike. And recently went to Kendalls award ceremony where she killed it. Theyre like home to me.
Came out as Pansexual.
And have plans to move to Texas ASAP and try college again this time with the love, support and maybe even guidance from my friends.
Maybe I might even see if i have actual feelings for Steve like ive been wondering for a while now or if its just platonic.
……
Its crazy my last update was basically the beginning of covid and im just now getting okay with not wearing a mask.

VARIOUS VERSES/AUS IN DEVELOPMENT aka things i have thought about already & would like to further develop through plotting & interaction!
Tumblr media
STAR WARS   —   inej was kidnapped by slavers at a young age & sold to a brothel in coruscant’s underground called the menagerie. eventually, she is liberated by a smuggler named kaz brekker & in return she begins in his employ offering up helpful details for his enterpise. I can adjust her timeline depending on who I am writing against & am familiar with most media (except the novels!) STRANGER THINGS  —  inej & her family moved to hawkins the summer of season 3. most of her life, she was homeschooled, as her family was always moving around the world as circus performers. following their visit to hawkins during the independence day celebration, they decided to lay down temporary roots to allow their daughter the traditional experience of senior year in a public school.  just as this town has secrets. . . so does she. SUCCESSION  —  she is a corporate spy. first against waystar, & then hired on by logan roy himself to relay secrets of his enemies. more recently, she has agreed to be a spy for kendall roy, logan’s son, upon learning certain abhorrent crimes that logan & others in the corporation have unethically swept under the rug. crimes inej find unforgivable.
SUPERNATURAL  —  the menagerie is a undercover program which kidnaps & indoctrinates young children into monster hunters of all sort: witches, vampires, werewolves... & after inej was kidnapped & brought to the facility at the age of 14, she was then trained the ins & outs of doing the group’s dirty work.  GRISHA!INEJ  —  inej was born grisha & at her testing when she was young, was found to be a squaller. raised in the little palace, she was found to be a ‘favorite’ of the general’s & was often chosen for certain tasks & privileges. upon liberation from the little palace, inej eventually becomes a merchant ship captain, sailing across the true sea to countries buying & selling goods. & sometimes smuggling fugitive grisha for safe passage.  GAME OF THRONES  —  inej sadly worked for petyr baelish in his pleasure house, & alternatively had a penchant for getting certain information out of her clients. eventually she escapes, knowing her only task is fleeing king’s landing: if she is found by someone loyal to her former employer, punishment worse than death awaits her. she is a targaryen sympathizer, especially when she hears about the great work daenerys is doing across the narrow sea. for comparison, think of how inej views alina in canon  — that is how she sees the true queen of westeros. as a saint. BIG LITTLE LIES  — inej is a monteray mom! she & her daughter valeria live in monteray, california. valeria goes to school with the kids in the show, & while inej is not exactly friends with the ladies, she witnesses (spoiler alert?)’s death & offers to help cover it up.  MOULIN ROUGE  —   inej works at the moulin rouge as a diamond dog. film based, musical influence. basically I have written satine before & i miss it, but inej can so easily fit into this setting, so here i am. GREY’S ANATOMY, CHICAGO MED, 911, ETC.    —  setting depends on who I am writing against; inej is a pediatric surgeon. that’s all i’ve got thanks. COLLEGE  —  she’s a performing arts student, so watch out. that’s all I have too but this could be really fun to discuss with other people. WESTWORLD   —  i have a vague idea in mind but honestly i’m waiting for this new season to see if they throw me a loop & make me want to change my mind! just know it’s coming!

Relationships and Dinner Plans - Sylvie Brett x Fem!Reader
A/n: So Mouch and Trudy are kinda like your adoptive parents or the closest thing you have to parents in this fic as warning: mentions of past death of family members
The breakfast diner was relatively quiet first thing in the morning, until...
“You should get back out there.”
Trudy’s statement had you almost spit your cup of tea at Erin who just raised an eyebrow.
“What, I’m sorry, what?” You spluttered, putting your tea down as Platt just stared at you.
“How long has it been since you were in a relationship?” Platt asked, leaving you to just stare at her, as you ignored how much Erin was staring at you by drinking your tea instead.
“I don’t see-”
“Not since... what’s their name?” Trudy asked, leaving you to grimace into your breakfast.
“Taylor who cheated on me-” You began but Erin cut you off with a question.
“What about Kendall? She was nice.”
“Running a dinosaur museum somewhere near a beach.” You deadpanned, sipping the remains of your tea.
“What about-”
“Also cheated on me. I have to go. Shift starts soon-”
“You should get back out there, when you’re ready.” Platt stated, leaving you to just sigh, shrugging with one shoulder before you hurried out to get to Firehouse 51.
///
You hadn’t seen Erin since she left for New York but the two of you texted when there was time.
Trudy was giving you looks everytime you were at Molly’s on your own or how you were still single. To the point that Trudy was dragging Mouch into it as you were sat there grimacing into your drink as they pointed out when someone knew had walked through the door.
Gabby even tried to suggest taking you to a gay bar or something but you just shook your head, eventually heading home instead.
“Wait, what happened with the last one Y/n dated, the one that ended badly-” Mouch began as Gabby just frowned.
“Ended badly?”
“One of them was Taylor. Cheated on Y/n with their high-school sweetheart. The other, Y/n wouldn’t name but they cheated on Y/n as well.” Trudy explained, leaving Mouch to grimace as Gabby frowned.
“Wait, wait, Taylor? Y/n got invited to their wedding.” Gabby exclaimed, leaving Hailey to grimace.
“Who invites the ex you cheated on, to your wedding?” Hailey exclaimed leaving everyone to shrug.
“I remember Y/n threw the invitation in the trash.” Mouch admitted as he stared down at his drink.
“Lindsay mentioned a Kendall, Y/n said they are running a dinosaur museum somewhere on the coast.” Trudy added as Gabby paused, trying to remember where she’d heard that name before.
“Kendall... Kendall... wait, the one Y/n met in college, right?” Gabby asked, leaving Stella to spot that you had walked in with Brett.
“Hey, Y/n! Brett!”
The shared smiles between you and Brett went unnoticed as the two of you approached the bar.
///
“Looks like you had a good night.” Stella remarked, leaving Brett to falter as she looked in the mirror of the Firehouse 51 bathroom.
“That or you had a dance with a mosquito.” Gabby added, leaving Brett to realise that the makeup on her neck was doing nothing for what was going on.
You walked in at the mention of mosquito, ignoring Brett’s glare as you just raised an eyebrow, keeping your face calm.
“Date with a vampire, Brett?”
Stella and Gabby just laughed, not noticing you giving Brett an apologetic look but she just chuckled at the predicament.
///
It wasn’t until the Firehouse was preparing for the Muster that Stella began to notice the looks you and Brett shared.
That or how Brett was checking you out as you showed her how to do a dummy drag.
“And that is how to do a dummy drag.” You explained as you stood up, gesturing for Brett to try.
It was Stella who spotted how Brett’s focus was drifting before you gestured for her to have an attempt as you went to check on Mouch.
“Okay, let’s get this guy back in the closet.” Stella stated, helping Brett carry the dummy to put away, her subtle mention of the closet going unnoticed by Brett.
///
“See, I am a single fun-loving woman who can go out and sex up Chicago all she wants. That reminds me, I found Brett checking Y/n out. Like full-on, oogling!” Stella exclaimed, leaving Gabby to chuckle.
It wasn’t until Brett and Cruz changed their Muster shifts that Gabby noticed how you looked at Brett.
You were just smiling as the rest of the Firehouse were yelling encouragements at Brett.
It wasn’t until Gabby realised after, Brett was focused on you as well.
Then after Brett won the pole hang, you two hugged a bit longer that what would have been normal before the whole firehouse was called over for the tug of war against 87.
You grinned as Firehouse 87 were pulled over, almost falling into Brett as the rope went flying towards 51, a cheer escaping your lips as you realised you wouldn’t need to fork out $100 to Firehouse 87 from Mouch’s bet.
///
Gabby and Stella had an idea of what was going on between you and Brett, but the rest of the Firehouse were a bit more dense.
Even you standing behind Brett as she, Gabby and Stella waited for Otis to try list some rules for women went unnoticed, even as Brett found herself learning into you slightly.
Gabby only noticed as you were next to her as she leaned into the kitchen counter, almost leaning on you instead but you didn’t move, you just kept watching Otis sweat in fear.
It wasn’t until a bad call that everyone else managed to put the pieces together.
The Firehouse didn’t know a lot about your past since you didn’t talk about it. The house knew that Mouch was the closest thing you had to a father and Trudy had taken you under your wing when she met you.
You’d lost your parents in a fire as a child and it was Mouch who was the one who rescued you, the two of you forming a bond after Mouch found out you were going into foster-care but you’d not talked about after that with anyone that wasn’t Mouch, Trudy or Brett. You’d left out how old you were though, only Mouch knew that.
Mouch recognised the fire conditions first whilst Brett just saw the look on your face.
///
You headed inside with Herrmann when you found them.
Herrmann had the 10 year old whilst you had the 4 year old in your arms.
Both were unconscious from smoke inhalation.
Brett and Gabby took them as Mouch hurried over to you, pulling you away as you started shaking.
Brett was too busy with the family and rushing them to Med that she only saw you when she’d gotten back and you were sat on the floor staring at the sky.
“How old were you?” Brett whispered, taking your hand as she sat down on the floor next to you, her shoulder bumping yours as she leaned into you but the two of you were in your own words at this point.
“Older than the 4 year old I pulled out today. It’s a flashbulb memory y’know, I remember that night... so vividly... I remember Mouch finding me and pulling me out, I remember seeing my parents b- the 4 year old might not remember but the 10 year old is more likely to...”
Your switching of topics didn’t go unheard as Brett took your hand, running her thumb over your knuckles as you swiped at the tears trying to escape your eyes with your other hand.
“I’m sorry-”
“Hey, you don’t need to apologise, ever...” Brett whispered, resting her head on your shoulder as you leaned into her.
“It’s just, I’m such a mess.” You admitted, looking down at your entwined hands with Brett’s hands as she followed your gaze.
“You’re my mess. My beautiful mess.” Brett smiled, kissing your forehead as you turned to look at her briefly before looking back at her hands holding yours.
“I love you.” You whispered, not entirely sure if she heard but at that point, you didn’t mind if she did or didn’t.
Turns out she did hear as her eyes widened, her hand going from yours to your chin so you would look at her.
“I love you too-” Brett was cut off from kissing you as the alarms began to go off, leaving Gabby and Stella to groan as they’d been watching the two of you with grins.
“Truck 81, Squad 3, Ambulance 61-”
As soon as the alarms went, the two of you jumped up, Brett ran over to the ambulance as you headed towards Truck 81.
“That’s the last time I ever make a bet with Trudy.” Mouch stated, leaving you to raise an eyebrow as you all flocked into the firetruck.
“She thought you were seeing someone, I thought you were just testing the waters on one of those online dating apps-”
“Oh my god...” You mumbled, face-palming as you ignored how confused Casey looked as he realised Gabby had figured it out ages ago.
“Also, Trudy wants you to bring Brett to dinner-”
“I’ll cook, I’m not embarrassing myself... publicly.” You replied, looking out the window to see where the incident was.
“I’ll tell Trudy after shift.” Mouch replied as Truck pulled up to where the incident was occuring.
///
You’d woken up from where you’d been napping as you phone beeped, waking up Brett as you stirred to reach your phone.
“Uh, so, the two people who are basically my adoptive parents are coming over for dinner tomorrow night and want you to be there. I’ll be cooking.” You began, looking up at Brett from where you’d fallen asleep on her chest.
“Uh, right, Mouch and Trudy, right?” Brett asked, even though she already knew the answer as you just nodded, typing a reply to Mouch’s text.
