Ray Kowalski's parents Damian and Barbara Kowalski, for @ds30below character week!
I collected some pictures from the actors' younger years, so we can imagine what Ray's family looked like when he was growing up. Clare Coulter's black-and-white pictures are from 1977 and the color ones are from the movie By Design (1981, available on YouTube). Dan MacDonald's pictures are from the television series Strange Paradise (1969-1970, available on YT) and from the movie The Neptune Factor (1973, available on YT). Dan MacDonald died last year, age 89. Clare Coulter, 82, is still acting.
I like to think Ray's parents were both born circa 1938, so they'd have been in their early twenties when Ray was born, and 86ish today (if fic writers let them live!).
And then, of course, here's their boy, from teen to 21.
Tumblr media
According to the official Due South website, Ray has an "extremely succesful brother". I'm glad that's all we ever heard of him in any official context.

On June 24th 1314 the Battle of Bannockburn was concluded.
The painting by the late Andrew Hillhouse compresses all the main events of the second day of the battle.
The Scots’ forces first appeared to the English along the low ridge, at the upper left of the painting, where the knelt to pray. Seeing them kneel, the English King, Edward II, called out “Ha! They kneel for mercy!” misunderstanding their intent. The Scots then stood up and marched in their schiltrons down the hill, straight towards the massing English knights, under cover from their own archers. The English archers reacted swiftly, however, and quickly drove the few Scots archers from the field. They must have been buoyed by this and lulled into believing they could vanquish the Scots.
However beneath this ridge is the line of casualties where the two armies first clashed. The well drilled Scottish lines held at the impact of the poorly organised English cavalry, they then began driving back the Auld Enemy in a relentless, murderous, crushing slog. The lines were packed so closely together that English support from their archers quickly became impossible.
In the lower left of the image, two Scottish soldiers can be seen holding aloft the standard of the English Earl of Gloucester, taunting the English lines. Gloucester had been stung by accusations of cowardice from his own king the day before. Subsequently, upon seeing the Scots’ advance, he hastily formed up the vanguard of the English cavalry and charged without even pausing to don his own surcoat. With great bravery, he charged the Scottish lines but went down under the spears of Edward Bruce’s men. Without his surcoat, he was not recognised as a potentially valuable hostage and was killed by the rampaging Scots. Behind these two characters, Scottish foot soldiers take English knights hostage.
In the far distance, to the right hand side, men can be seen running from horses. The English had redeployed their now redundant archers across the Pelstream Burn, on the Scots’ left flank, where they wreaked total havoc amongst the Scotsmen under the command of the Black Douglas and Walter the Steward. But the Bruce had foreseen just such a development and deployed the Scots light cavalry under Sir Robert Keith in a circuitous movement to dispatch them. Unseen by the English, they tracked swiftly through the concealing countryside to take the English archers by surprise and drove them from the field.
In the centre of the painting can be seen the huge Lion Rampant, the position of King Robert. It was at this point that the Bruce deployed his own schiltron, with support from Angus Og MacDonald and his highlanders, who he had previously held in reserve. As they smashed into the thick of the battle, the English began to lose heart. They were being driven back mercilessly and yet most had been unable to reach the front line to strike a blow. They could not manoeuvre effectively in the tight confines and on such broken terrain. Many fell beneath the crush, never to rise again and panic began to surge through their ranks.
English King Edward was persuaded to leave the field by his advisers as order in the English ranks collapsed and he fled for nearby Stirling castle with his escort. Upon seeing the Royal Standard, three golden leopards on a scarlet background, leaving the field, the English collapse became inevitable as depicted in the right hand side of the painting. The Scottish archers returned to the field to wreak havoc upon the fleeing English.
The “small folk” abandoned their reserve position by Coxet Hill and took to the field. It is unlikely that Robert the Bruce ordered this charge, but its effect was devastating upon the already retreating English forces. Seeing these hundreds of figures rush into battle carrying workmen’s tools as weapons and waving homemade banners, the English mistook them as another Scottish reserve force entering the fray. Subsequently, they totally disintegrated and fled the field, pursued in every direction by vengeful Scots.
The rout was complete. King Edward eventually reached English occupied Stirling Castle but was refused entry by the castle commander, Sir Philip Moubray, as this would only have resulted in the King’s ultimate capture. He and his retinue were pursued relentlessly south and east to Dunbar by the Black Douglas.

David Tennant's Obscure TV Appearances: 1989's Biting The Hands
I'm back from my visit with my family and ready to dive straight into my latest find - I'm excited to share I've finally obtained access to David's 3rd earliest TV performance! His first two performances were in 1988: his anti-smoking ad, and in Dramarama: The Secret Of Croftmore. And in 1989 he did a Play On One called Biting The Hands. And I've FINALLY got it! Biting The Hands has been one of the most elusive pieces of work David did in his early years. First, it wasn't a sitcom or an ad but a one-off play, and it was broadcast in the late 1980s, limiting its exposure to those who might be recording on beta or VHS. It was part of the second series of the prime-time contemporary single TV play series, The Play On One (which was itself a re-tooling of an older series called The Play For Today.) Biting The Hands was directed by Carol Wilks and produced by Norman McCandlish. It was 75 mins in length, and was broadcast at 9:30 pm on 11 Apr 1989. Here's the play's synopsis: "Linda and Gail are Hell's Belles - an alternative comedy double act. When success begins to beckon, they must decide whether to change their act or keep doing what they believe in. Are their principles justified, or are they just 'biting the hand that feeds them'?"
The writer of Biting The Hands, Rona Munro, was born in Aberdeen in 1959 and is an award-winning Scottish playwright. She started writing professionally in 1981 and has written for film, television, stage and radio. Biting The Hands was Munro's first play for BBC-TV. Given today's excitement about the Doctor Who 60th Anniversary trailer, it might interest Whovians to know Munro wrote the classic DW story Survival as well as the New Who story The Eaters of Light, making her the first (and only!) writer to do both Classic and New Who!
But Munro has yet ANOTHER connection with our dear DT! For their production of Scotland Matters in 1992, the 7:84 Scottish People's Theatre asked established Scottish writers to consider aspects of life in Scotland and write playlets about them. Munro was one of these writers! She wrote a playlet called 'The Fence' for Scotland Matters which concerned the interrogation of a Gulf War peace protester. In a turn around of questioning technique, we are told the story through the security police and not via the protester. David played the protester Keith!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But back to Biting The Hands - which was produced three years before Scotland Matters and filmed when David was still in drama school. Let's take a look at what the play was about, and go more in depth about its stars: Judith Sweeney (Linda) and Louise Beattie (Gail).
Judith Sweeney (Linda McKay) attended David's alma mater - the RSAMD, now the Royal Conservatoire - and graduated in 1977. She played the role of Sally Shaw on the Scottish soap opera Take The High Road. Louise Beattie (Gail Graham) later went on to star in Emmerdale.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are a few more articles on "Biting The Hands" from the time of its broadcast:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beattie's older sister Maureen has ALSO starred with DT many times! Among these are For One Night Only (an evening of theatrical prose, poetry, and gossip at the Swan Theatre for the 1998 RSC Fringe Festival) and a 2001 staged reading of Medea at the Cottesloe Theatre. More recently, Maureen has played David’s mother in Deadwater Fell, and Kelly MacDonald's mother in The Decoy Bride!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now we've been introduced to the stars of the play, and we know what it's about, let's get to David's part! His part begins about 47 minutes into the play, and it's a role which makes up a total of about 20 whole seconds. He plays one of three squaddies (low-ranking military) and is in a group of soldiers who travel on the train the main characters Linda and Gail board in Edinburgh to go to London - but he's not seen in this particular scene. After the ladies board the return train back home to Edinburgh, by coincidence these same squaddies happen to be traveling on their train. David's character is the only one of the squaddies to speak, and his words entail wolf-whistles at the two women and calling them "Pet"! Here are some screenshots:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a later scene, Linda and Gail happen to bump into another friend on the train, and the three open a bottle of liquor and sing and drink. David's character sings and drinks with them. Here are a few screenshots of that short scene:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You may notice in the first set of screenshots David is clean shaven & in the second, he sports a mustache. These scenes all supposedly occur on the same train from London to Edinburgh so it seems there's a continuity error here. Perhaps these scenes were shot at different times?
These short scenes are the only times David appears in the play. He's given credit in the end titles. Of significance, though, is he is NOT credited as the "Third Squaddie" (a designation I've seen all over the Internet for close to a decade). He's just the third squaddie listed.
Tumblr media
The BFI (British Film Institute) holds a VHS video recording of Biting The Hands. The copy is in "pending" status, which means it's unlikely the copy can be viewed.
Before I close this post on Biting The Hands, two more little benefits: here are its opening sequence, and its title frame!

Found this in the Guardian awhile ago, and figured it should be shared.
I have this thing about the tendency to demonise things like phones and video games. Because everything else that kids might want to do gets demonised too. Kids aren't allowed to "loiter" - that is what we used to call "hanging out" back in the day. Even in the few remaining places where they can more or less "loiter", they get the stink-eye from adults who seem to think they're going to make trouble just by breathing. And while parents bitch about kids always being on their phones, let a kid leave one behind when their parents have an app tracking their kid's phone and watch how fast they change their tune. "You have to keep your phone on you at all times! NO! NOT LIKE THAT!" For fuck's sake.
"Kids are addicted to this stuff!" Okay, that's how you're phrasing it, we'll work with that - what are you providing them as an alternative? I ask this of ... basically everyone. Parents. Teachers and school superintendants. Civic planners and government. If you want to keep kids away from online bullying and predatory monetisation and ... honestly, that's the only thing really wrong with video games, since they're mostly just a more active version of reading or watching TV ... give them something else to do! Give them parks! Skate parks and regular parks with benches and gazebos and maybe a little botanical garden segment! Give them libraries (or, more to the point, stop taking away their libraries)! Stop giving them the stink-eye if they sit around the mall food court, nursing a single beverage for an hour because they can't afford anything else!
Fuck's sake. I know kids and teens can be annoying sometimes, but they need and frankly deserve a place where they're free to be as annoying as they want. (And they should also be allowed to play video games because if you take out the bullshit monetisation and multiplayer lobbies full of assholes, video games are good.)

Not 100% up on everything but re: the part time players…
Noah - does some stuff on the React channel but otherwise chilling with the SAG-AFTRA strike. He’s been playing Starfield a lot (he commented on how he knew Damien was Heller right away).
Keith - also doing stuff on the React channel, some commercials and modeling (he was in a big Apple commercial recently with Octavia Spencer)
NOTE: Joe Bereta used to be an executive producer for Smosh and I noticed Keith and Noah popping in after he went over to the React channel. Trevor Evarts from Mythical Kitchen has also appeared. I think React and Mythical Kitchen are collab’ing soon but Trevor is also dating a producer named Raven who works there.
Olivia - chilling while the SAG-AFTRA strike is going on. She hangs out with some better known actor friends (Max Minghella, Logan Lerman, etc). Also makes TikToks.
Amanda - works in a lot of stage shows and does commercials as well
Angela - works with Patrick MacDonald on a podcast and also Starkid. Nerdy Prudes Must Die just came out on YT for free and it’s amazing. Also just finished a series of a “a character a day” TikToks which was amazing as well.
Chanse - does React sometimes as well. I think his connection there is Izzy, a regular reactor. Also think he’s just living is life with his friends travelling and partying.
Arasha - she’s a host of a show in a bar I think. She also does unboxing videos for makeup on TikTok.
…I’m so sad and still not over the fact that I can’t add Jackie to this list but glad she’s doing well with Second City New York.
I would add more that Olivia, Amanda, Angela & Patrick formed a comedy super group called "Work Mom" and has been doing some shows all over the summer!
