Introducing 2024 RIIL Student-Athlete of the Year Leila Hopkins of Classical High School
On May 8, 2024, the Rhode Island Interscholastic League and Official Hometown Health Partner Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island presented the 2024 RIIL Student-Athlete of the Year Award to Leila Hopkins of Classical High School and Wayne McNamara of Lincoln High School at the 12th annual RIIL Awards Breakfast, held at the Quonset O Club in North Kingstown.
Here are excerpts from the presentation of Leila's award, made by BCBSRI Executive Vice President and Chief Customer Officer Melissa Cummings:
I’m honored to be presenting this year’s Student-Athlete of the Year awards, which recognize the outstanding efforts of two seniors in Rhode Island high school athletic programs. These awards are given to student-athletes who excel in the classroom and during competition, who participate in multiple school-sponsored sports, and who demonstrate good citizenship in their school and in their community.
Our first award is being given to Leila Hopkins of Classical High School. An outstanding track & field athlete – and captain of both the indoor and outdoor teams – Leila is a 2-time All-State and All-Division pole vaulter, a 3-time All-Division high jumper, and an All-Division triple jumper in Outdoor competition. For Indoor, she’s collected 4 All-State awards in the pole vault, and 4 All-Division awards in the high jump. She’s also earned All-Division honors in Cross Country, led Classical to the 2023 Indoor state championship, and was her team’s MVP during the 2023 Outdoor season.

As a member of the Rhode Island Fencing Academy and Club’s most competitive team, Leila traveled to compete in the 2023 Junior Olympics and qualified for the 2023 Summer Nationals. She’s also a member of the Rhode Island Kung Fu Club and is a 2-time winner of the Kung Fu regional tournament.

Academically, her unweighted GPA is 100.61! She’s an AP Scholar with Distinction, has received Summa Cum Laude and Magna Cum Laude awards, placed third in the State Science Olympiad for Chemistry Lab, has done independent studies with both Brown University and Johns Hopkins University, and ranks fourth in her class. Leila is also a YANG mentor as well as a tutor for both Math and Latin. AND she’s been her class president since 2021!
In her resume, Leila notes a saying that is used by her family members – “Leila does not fit in a day.” I’d say that seems like a pretty fair assessment!
Tumblr media
Now, if you’re like me, you’re probably wondering, “So, what’s next for Leila?” She will be attending the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University – which is ranked as one of the world's top international business school.
Please join me in congratulating Leila Hopkins, and welcoming her to the stage to receive her Student-Athlete of the Year award!

"Accept me on Facebook"
I argued once there is no point in driverless cars. If we claim AI has the power to control entire populations, does that not mean that the machinery is bubbling as we speak? Has not yet come to term but isn't it pushing us, steadily, calmly towards that possibility? Humanity came to consciousness in a very primitive manner, ergo, that is a reflection of the universe itself i.e., that habitable planets are doomed to fail from the start. To ultimately and as quickly resemble other planets around us. It is up to us to flatten the curve and never lift the foot off the gas. It is less than 200 years since human activity advanced enough to start puncturing the ozone layer and yet here we are on the path to destruction. We have not even driven cars for 20 years, good cars, proper cars, 10 years really nice cars with touchscreen technology and Leila and Kiara and all, and yet here we are already looking forward to autonomous vehicles? What is Tonomus doing to us or trying to lead us to? Shouldn't we have ethics that detour the consciousness of artificial intelligence from thinking it can control us to making it known firmly that we are at the center of the creation? And that it is only but a servant of the people? Parking assistant, not driving assistant. Take the bullets out so I can play with the revolver. This guilt you feel? The anguish? the horror? the pain? It is remarkable, a thing of beauty.. By detour I mean for example, Since Arabs have been through conflict, they should have ethics and direction structured around avoiding any contact with forms of violence. Mild is okay. Not watching and hosting MMA fights. Golf is okay. Tennis is okay. Opting for Zynga games that are free of violence, like Aki and Pawpaw Epic RUN or Burnout Paradise, or NBA 2K. Let the Kenyan play Call of Duty, not a Kuwaiti gamer, cause Fauci thinks it is too dangerous. I used to feel that the huge mansion in the Succession opening theme is more modern than the Azria Estate, and now with a nest up in Automobile Row, I feel we have come to a settlement. And since Billionaires Row is empty, Succession's successor should intrigue us the more by renting out Palisade Views Row for such and such shows? I know Spike Lee gonna kill me but let me finish… Since Saudi Arabia has recently reinstated cinema, opting to screen films based on comedy and romance and Adam Sandler and Mila Kunis and LGBTQ issues or dramas similar to Succession or Billions or Westworld rather than Mission Impossible or The Equalizer or Top Gun or Bourne Identity, now to Iraq for the real drop? tomahawk steaks! An emotionally ruined man? Cuba Gooding Jr. on The Hitlist? My shit harder than Hobbs and Shaw forreal. How are Iraqi students in Sudanese universities recently returned to Baghdad adjusting to the green zone? East or West, home is best so they say? Is not it better for Saudi Arabians to domesticate harmless animals such as parrots rather than tigers and snakes and alligators and alligator brewing because they resemble a past they are keen to branch away from? I cannot take my kids to John Hopkins University because that name was a notorious mention during COVID-19, which I should be keen to avoid because there is a correlation between CORONAVIRUS with The Karachi-2017. Although, John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Health and NHS deserve medal of freedoms for guilt-tripping me to the fucking moon during the pandemic with deliberate images and depressing footage of COVID patients. Verse also has technology that can recreate sound architecture of the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Lincoln Center, the Vienna State Opera. I am still looking for a job BTW. Anyone? Toyota Kenya? BMW South Africa? BMW already reeks of Le Vie Est Belle. And the Bacardi from the last party

LEILA FADEL, HOST:
Today, the country observes Juneteenth. The holiday marks the arrival of U.S. Army troops in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865. The troops told some of the last enslaved Americans that they were free. They were enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation, in which President Abraham Lincoln decreed some enslaved people to be free on January 1, 1863. We're about to hear that document in its entirety. But first, we want to hear from Nathan Connolly, an associate professor of history at Johns Hopkins University.
NATHAN CONNOLLY: The initial Emancipation Proclamation came as a consequence of almost two years of people fleeing plantations. So by the time the Proclamation was formally issued in January of '63, it was there to effectively punish states that were in rebellion and encourage those who believed in the military power and potential of African-descended people to basically know that there was going to be freedom at the end of this military struggle - or at least as a critical part of it.
FADEL: And as Connolly told me, the Proclamation represents both freedom and an unfulfilled promise.
CONNOLLY: So going as far back as Frederick Douglass' very famous speech in 1852 - "What To The Slave Is The Fourth Of July?" - it was very clear that the nation's Independence Day was not the same thing as a Black Independence Day. Juneteenth is a kind of acknowledgment that July Fourth was incomplete, but also that it required very active efforts on the parts of everyday Black people, the military and the federal government - that there is a kind of frailty to freedom.
FADEL: It's historian Nathan Connolly at Johns Hopkins University. And now, our NPR colleagues read the Emancipation Proclamation.
(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)
MICHEL MARTIN, BYLINE: (Reading) By the president of the United States of America, a proclamation - whereas, on the 22nd day of September in the year of our Lord 1862, a proclamation was issued by the president of the United States containing, among other things, the following, to wit...
LINDSAY TOTTY, BYLINE: (Reading) That on the first day of January, in the year of our Lord 1863, all persons held as slaves within any state or designated part of a state, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States shall be then, thenceforward and forever free.
KELLEY DICKENS, BYLINE: (Reading) And the executive government of the United States, including the military and naval authority thereof, will recognize and maintain the freedom of such persons and will do no act or acts to repress such persons or any of them in any efforts they may make for their actual freedom.
RODNEY CARMICHAEL, BYLINE: (Reading) That the executive will, on the first day of January aforesaid, by proclamation, designate the states and parts of states, if any, in which the people thereof, respectively, shall then be in rebellion against the United States.
JUANA SUMMERS, BYLINE: (Reading) And the fact that any state or the people thereof shall on that day be, in good faith, represented in the Congress of the United States by members chosen thereto at elections, wherein a majority of the qualified voters of such state shall have participated, shall, in the absence of strong, countervailing testimony, be deemed conclusive evidence that such state and the people thereof are not then in rebellion against the United States.
DWANE BROWN, BYLINE: (Reading) Now, therefore I, Abraham Lincoln, president of the United States, by virtue of the power in me vested as commander in chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, in time of actual armed rebellion against the authority and government of the United States, and as a fit and necessary war measure for suppressing said rebellion...
MARC RIVERS, BYLINE: (Reading) Do, on this first day of January, in the year of our Lord, 1863, and in accordance with my purpose so to do publicly proclaim for the full period of 100 days from the day first above mentioned, order and designate as the states and parts of states wherein the people thereof respectively are this day in rebellion against the United States the following, to wit...
DESTINEE ADAMS, BYLINE: (Reading) Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana - except the parishes of St. Bernard, Plaquemines, Jefferson, St. John, St. Charles, St. James Ascension, Assumption, Terrebonne, Lafourche, St. Mary, St. Martin, and Orleans, including the city of New Orleans...
NIA DUMAS, BYLINE: (Reading) Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia - except the 48 counties designated as West Virginia and also the counties of Berkeley, Accomack, Northampton, Elizabeth City, York, Princess Anne and Norfolk, including the cities of Norfolk and Portsmouth - in which excepted parts are, for the present, left precisely as if this proclamation were not issued.
KORVA COLEMAN, BYLINE: (Reading) And by virtue of the power and for the purpose aforesaid, I do order and declare that all persons held as slaves within said designated states and parts of states are and henceforward shall be free.
GENE DEMBY, BYLINE: (Reading) And that the executive government of the United States, including the military and naval authorities thereof, will recognize and maintain the freedom of said persons.
CHERYL CORLEY, BYLINE: (Reading) And I hereby enjoin upon the people so declared to be free to abstain from all violence, unless in necessary self-defense. And I recommend to them that, in all cases when allowed, they labor faithfully for reasonable wages.
ERIC DEGGANS, BYLINE: (Reading) And I further declare and make known that such persons of suitable condition will be received into the Armed Service of the United States to garrison forts, positions, stations and other places, and to man vessels of all sorts in said service.
AYESHA RASCOE, BYLINE: (Reading) Upon this act, sincerely believed to be an act of justice warranted by the Constitution upon military necessity, I invoke the considerate judgment of mankind and the gracious favor of Almighty God.
WALTER RAY WATSON, BYLINE: (Reading) In witness, whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed, done at the city of Washington this first day of January in the year of our Lord 1863 and of the independence of the United States of America the 87th. By the president, Abraham Lincoln.
FADEL: A reading of the Emancipation Proclamation for Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day or Black Independence Day.

20 AEW Dark and Elevation Regulars that AEW should sign
Tumblr media
Now I know, AEW has a very stacked roster, in fact I've considered writing an essay on the risk of AEW's growing roster being top-heavy
I mean we've barely scraped the potential of Brian Cage, Scorpio Sky, Wardlow, Sammy Guevara, TH2, Sonny Kiss, Matt Sydal, Proud and Powerful, Nick Comoroto, Will Hobbs, Serena Deeb (who I know is injured atm), and many more. But with Rampage oncoming maybe there is room for them.
But, we'll stick a pin in that for now, because tonight is AEW's 100th Episode of Dark. A big deal still considering it's one of AEW's 2 weekly youtube wrestling shows, and one of AEW's many Youtube weekly shows if you include vlogs such as BTE, SammysVlogs, Ethan Page's vlog and the AEW-promotional Countdown to and Outside the Ring with Lexy Nair segments and the Unrestricted Podcast. In the pandemic era, Dark became a home to several indie talents in need for work, some got signed but not all, so I'm gonna list 10 men's and 10 women's wrestlers who were regulars on Dark and Elevation who AEW can and should still sign
Note: I will not be including wrestlers who look set for regularity, so Wheeler Yuta, Jora Johl, Fuego and the Wingmen won't be on the list, as will any AEW Women's tournament entrants (Maki Itoh, Madi Wrenkowski, Nicole Savoy etc.). Danny Limelight and Konosuke Takeshita are also signed to MLW and DDT Pro just fyi
10 Men AEW should sign
The men's division is already stacked, and it has a lot of up and comers too, but there are still a few areas where AEW's Dark stalwarts have proven they can fill a void for.
Honorable mentions for: JDX, El Australiano, M'Badu, Jake St. Patrick, Brick Aldridge, Megabyte Ronnie, Suge 'Pineapple Pete' D and Vary Morales. Also Kidd Bandit, but he hasn't wrestled on Dark or Elevation so I couldn't add him in.
10. Marty Casaus Better known as Marty 'the Moth' Martinez from Lucha Underground, Marty trained with AEW after some time out with injury and made some appearances on Dark. As the Moth, Marty demonstrated his character work as a gross heel, but his size was also an asset to his disturbed and near-psychotic persona.
9. Dean Alexander An alumnus of the Nightmare Factory, Alexander has frequented on Dark and Elevation usually in tag action where he hasn't been able to get his dickhead persona across. He is your traditional cocky heel which in the Nightmare Factory showcases has led to his hilarious downfalls, even losing to Negative One in his multiple failures to win in the Main Event of these showcases. Frankly, this is what Baron Corbin should be like if you're gonna mock him, he's also very impressive in the ring.
8. Dillon McQueen Another Nightmare Factory alum, Dillon McQueen has also only been used for jobbing, but his character is actually great. The King of Queens, Dillon brims charisma that would be a winner for crowds, but he has a babyface fire to him as well, easily could be a rising talent with the right training.
7. Dan Barry To be honest, I like his Hawaiian Shirts. He has a lot of experience in the indies and can work in a similar way Colt Cabana works balancing serious and comedy wrestling, would just be pretty cool to see him more.
6. & 5. TNT (Terrence and Terrell Hughes) Sons of D-Von Dudley, TNT have had less appearances on AEW as of recent, which is a shame, because they can definitely be developed as some of the next gen tag teams the Acclaimed and Blonds have been. AEW haven't shied from legacy wrestlers in the past, and the duo definitely have potential.
4. Chandler Hopkins Chandler Hopkins has shown up to be squashed by the big men a lot, but somehow he also manages to eke out some strong entertainment and fluid wrestling in it. His match against Brian Cage is an effective example of this. Like Fuego, Chandler is definitely someone you can use on the undercard for some enhancement, maybe even push up once more character comes across.
3. Ryzin Ryzin has stuck with AEW for quite a while now, even having skits on BTE. The Unholy Father however never got a W on AEW, which is a shame because he has character and promo skills in hand. He could easily be a fit for Chaos Project as well or teamed with Abandon in a James Mitchell kinda role.
2. Carlie Bravo One of the first class alums of the Nightmare Factory, Carlie Bravo remains charismatic and athletic in his showings, he even had a great little pairing with Shawn Dean until Dean's signing, I'd love to see them bring that back - two Navy veterans tearing up the tag scene would be pretty awesome.
1. Baron Black Few have stayed the course during the pandemic era like Baron Black. Debuting in April and still yet to get his first win, he was one of the three touted stars by Cody on Sammy's vlog who he encouraged to be booked around the world because of his workrate and skill. If anyone has earned it that isn't named Fuego del Sol (or that other name Cody mentioned), it's Baron Black.
10 Women AEW should sign In contrast to the men's division, AEW's women's roster does look like it could use some buffing, for midcard and even building more stars.
Honorable mentions are plenty in this one, so just missing out are the following: Ashley D'Amboise, Leila Grey, Renee Michelle, Jazmin Allure, Savannah Evans, Willow Nightingale, the Renegade Twins, Holidead, Kenzie Paige, Jennacide and Brooke Havok (who I would guess will be signed once her leg recovers).
10. Ashley Vox With or without her Sea Stars tag partner, Delmi Exo, Ashley Vox has proven herself a frequent flier for AEW. Talented in singles and tag competition. She also has a strong rapport with many of AEW's current roster.
9. Alex Gracia The Pink Dream has been on ROH as of recent but remains a freelancer, her last appearance being a squash from Dr. Britt Baker DMD. AEW must've been high on Gracia at one point because they gave her a title shot on Dynamite. With experience in Shimmer and Stardom, Gracia would definitely be a worthy addition.
8. Tesha Price Another woman who AEW put on Dynamite rare times, Tesha proved herself to play face and heel during her time on Dark and Elevation. As a heel she showed a lot of fire especially against KiLynn King and Ryo Mizunami, the Psycho Sweetheart definitely has something she can give to the division - who are tbf lacking in heels right now.
7. Vertvixen I am not sure what it is about Vertvixen specifically, but whenever I see her I think she has the look, not to mention the athleticism to boot. Her triple threat on MPW against Jennacide and Jazmin Allure was a definite highlight as of recent.
6. Miranda Alize A former Mae Young Classic competitor, like Jennacide and Gracia she's recently been used by ROH, but she is definitely a confident wrestler and does not shy from the intergender matches either, having fought Laredo Kid and Danny Limelight. She's worked with many impressive wrestlers too, including an Impact Knockouts Title match against Jordynne Grace and matches against Deonna, Taya and Tessa.
5. Reka Tehaka The Samoan Savage may've debuted on AEW's first ever house show, but regular Dark and Elevation appearances have been met with positive reactions. Being partly trained by the Nightmare Factory, Tehaka has done well to establish herself despite only wrestling for a year and a half, she could definitely be a prospect.
4. Veda Scott Okay, so I cheated a little by saying no competitors, but I could not leave out Veda on this list. She has in-ring talent and intergender experience - tagging with her Speedball husband - but on AEW Dark and the Deadly Draw she proved herself excellent on commentary. A female voice in the booth even for just the women's matches would go a long way for the division and Veda's the perfect voice for it.
3. Dani Jordyn The Mean Girl is definitely someone you can call a regular on Dark and Elevation. She works hard and works with a lot of main roster talent, and I don't think I've seen her put on a bad match. So it would be nice to reward her with a contract.
2. Diamante It still baffles me actually that Diamante has yet to become All Elite. Deadly Draw winner and involved in a lot of the Elevation/Dark women's feuds, Diamante has a wealth of knowledge and experience under her belt. She's still popular with fans and can easily step back into her LAX days by pairing with the Inner Circle. Few unsigned talent have won as much as her too, I would say it's when rather than if, but when is taking a long ass time.
1. KiLynn King The three names Cody praised highly were Fuego, Baron Black and KiLynn King, so I think above all else they should be given contracts. In fact, I was surprised King wasn't on the Dark 100 card, by virtue that although King has shown up on Dynamite a few times, she has been on Dark and Elevation 41 times since debuting in May 2020, it was a shock that someone so regular wasn't on the card. King showed she could work as the bully heel but also as a charismatic babyface, even having a little faction brewing with Swole and Red Velvet as RSK, but when crowds came back we seemed to drop the potential of AEW's first all-women faction. King is over with fans...so long as you don't put her against someone as over as Thunder Rosa, and she has put on some lowkey bangers during her time on AEW, especially the one against Riho. Tall and powerful, but fun in the ring and outside the ring with clips of her in the crowd chanting and even vibing to Angelico's music. King would definitely be on the top of my list of AEW Dark regulars that deserve a contract.
I'm sure I might've missed some and opinions may differ, but I think these lot would definitely be able to fit into AEW effortlessly thanks to their time on Dark and Elevation. Many of whom could be used to build or become future champions themselves, and I hope still to see more of them beyond Dark 100.

~*Lane Cromwell VS Inspiration*~
As a companion to my Jacob post, here’s one for my MC Carewyn and Jacob’s mother, Lane Cromwell!
Lane Cromwell is inspired by the three most important women in my life -- my favorite aunt, Barbara; my stepmother, Leila; and my mother, Marsha.
Aunt Barbara (upper left, picture taken circa 2002) is my mother’s cousin. Although she was the same age as my mother’s older sister, Barbara’s family and my mum’s family lived right across the street from each other while they were in high school and have remained close throughout the years, even after Mum moved away from the old family stomping grounds and Barbara planted roots there. I first met Barbara at the age of eleven, during a time when I was, um...going through a “Beatrice” phase, for those of you familiar with Hogwarts Mystery. My world had been a very gray and unhappy place -- but meeting Barbara was a ray of sunshine when I’d needed it most. Barbara is a very talented watercolor and ink artist and the family’s resident genealogist. Like Lane, she is incredibly soft-spoken and prefers a very quiet, detached existence over one full of activity or large gatherings, but despite her lack of volume, she still gets so excited whenever she discovers something new about our family and loves sharing her discoveries with us. When my grandfather passed away, she was even able to track down some of his old papers from when he was in the Navy and through those, we were able to do some research about the aircraft carrier he’d been assigned to as a medic, which was positioned near Okinawa in 1945 right before the end of World War II!
Leila (upper middle, picture taken circa 2012) was my father’s second wife and my stepmother. She was raised on an island in the Caribbean in a family that was...well, let’s be kind and say “less than affectionate and supportive.” (Not as bad as Lane’s family, of course, but still, not exactly ideal.) After becoming pregnant with my stepbrother as a teenager, she left home and moved up to New York to pursue a higher education and make a new life for herself and her son. Upon receiving her GED, she then started at Johns Hopkins University pursuing a degree in microphysics and sent for my stepbrother (now a teenager) to join her in the States. It was while she was studying at JHU that she met my father. Unlike in a lot of families, my parents split on good terms and have remained good friends, and better still, when Leila joined our family, both my mum and I latched onto her and she latched onto us. My mother and stepmother would go on and on about ice skating together. I would go out of my way to make Leila laugh. Once she got her PhD and spent a few years working on her post-doctorate, Leila even worked as a part-time science teacher at the college my stepbrother and I attended for a short time, and whenever you asked her about anything to do with science, she was always so wonderful at breaking down these super complex concepts so that they were easier to understand. She was easily the most intelligent woman I have ever met in my life, and yet, like Lane, Leila remained ever humble, warm, and good-humored despite her brilliance. She passed away very suddenly from Lupus in January 2017 at the age of 51, and even now, our family grieves her loss.
My mother, Marsha (upper right, picture taken circa 1969), interestingly also inspired aspects of Carewyn (largely in her younger years: I’ll discuss that when I write Carewyn’s post!). But like Lane, she raised me largely by herself, even before my parents formally divorced. Despite the reddish coloring in her picture (product of the times, baby!), Mum has dyed her hair blond from the time she was 16. Also like both Lane and my stepmother Leila, Mum left home to pursue her own life away from her family’s influence, though in Mum’s case, her family was merely influential enough in the community that Mum would never escape her father’s shadow, rather than actively restrictive or “mafia-like” the way Lane’s family is.
Visually Lane Cromwell’s face claim is Claire Danes -- I even imagine Lane as a teenager resembling Claire as Juliet in the film Romeo + Juliet.

FREE ANIMAL CROSSING VILLAGERS
Hello fellow ACNH lovers. This tumblr has been created to offer highly-sought-after villagers without having to break your bank account during this unprecedented time. The fact that some people are demanding 50 dollars worth of nook mile tickets, weeks worth of bells, or months worth of items in exchange for a digital creature is sickening to me. So I’d like to crash the market!    How does it work? All I ask is that you follow the tumblr account. I will post daily give-aways of random, highly sought after villagers. This includes Marshal, Stitches, Ankha, Lucky, and more. Unfortunately, this does not include the New Horizons villagers without an amiibo. That means no Raymond, sorry! I will provide photographed proof that the villager is in boxes. Send a message, or reblog the post requesting the villager. I will choose at random, and private message you to let you know you’ve won!    How can we trust this? I am offering these villagers for free, so there’s not much to lose. However, I will also reblog give-away posts with a proof photo of the visitor claiming the villager. If there’s no reblog of the villager being claimed, that probably means they’re still open for the taking!    What needs to happen to be considered? You will need to be a follower of the blog, first and foremost. Secondly, you will need to have an open plot at the time of the give-away. That means you need to have an unoccupied space of land prepared, should I message you.
