Tiny Review: Kung Fu Panda 4. Wholesome passing of the staff.

I went into this with very low expectations. The franchise has been quite lacklustre. The previous movie barely had any story.  

But this one, like its theme, brings change. It’s commendable that they are transitioning the franchise past Po and into a new generation.

I love Po’s slow acceptance of passing on the staff. And look forward to Zhen’s heroic growth arc, in the next one.

Edit: OMG, I realized this so late... Po's awkward transition into bad jokes is a reflection of him slowly becoming a father-figure(dad jokes)!

Hmm, I can’t help but think of the MCU’s transition as well. I think this succeeds where Marvel failed, because Zhen is a wholly different personality than Po.  

Whereas in the MCU, the successors were mostly gender/race-bended bland copies of the originals.

Kung Fu Panda 4 is a 2024 American animated martial arts comedy film produced by DreamWorks Animation. It features Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, James Hong, Bryan Cranston, and Ian McShane, with Awkwafina, Ke Huy Quan, Ronny Chieng, Lori Tan Chinn, and Viola Davis.

I havent read or watched many danmei but these are my favorites.

My absolute favorite has to go to:

TGCF (Tian Guan Ci Fu) otherwise known as Heaven Official's Blessing. I cant wait for the live action, Eternal Faith.

I finally caught up with the official English translations and am not so patiently waiting to read the final volume. I'm not sure how I feel about China's revised form of the series (so much more censored from what I've heard)

But hey, at least I have season 2 coming out in a few days.

My favorite character by the way, is somehow Yin Yu (maybe I just relate to him in so many ways), followed extremely closely by He Xuan.

My next favorite is MDZS (Mo Dao Zu Shi) or Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation. Or the live action: The Untamed.

This series has a special place in my heart and got me through the pandemic, as it did many other people. I've read and watched all the forms of story telling.

My favorite character, much like everyone else's is Wei Wuxian. There is just something about unreliable narrating/story telling that I just love. Besides, who doesnt love reading about a disaster Bisexual?

My next favorite danmei is Zhen Hun or Guardian.

I first watched this live action way before the pandemic and could never find a good or completed english translations online so I promptly left the danmei world until 2020.

Once again, I love the disaster bisexual trope.

This one really surprised me with how much I enjoyed both the live action and the danmei itself. I need an official English translation in book form to add to my collection.

My favorite character, of course the marvelous Wen Kexing.

That's about as far as I have gotten into the danmei world. I know there is a lot of really good and really questionable danmei out there to read. But these four are probably never going to leave my favorites list.

I've just read volume one of the official English translations. I quite enjoyed it. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea and I get that. It's quite a triggering read. So if you choose to read it. Use caution.

Apparently this series is also getting a live action, Immortality.

I'll let everyone know how I feel about it once I'm done reading it. I know I've said that before in other blog posts. I have moods, I go through phases, I'm discovering I'm neurodivergent and possibly adhd so I just go with the punches.

Also what is everyone's thoughts on Thousand Autumns? I've had the first volume sitting in my cart for months now.

Yes this has your typical cliché switch body storyline structure that follows many dramas. It’s sort of reminiscent in my opinion to the kdrama Secret Garden, except of coarse this is more modern. It’s full of fluffy goodness and it very hilarious all around. The first half especially is funny as heck, middle half gets a tiny bit repetitive and slow, and with the last episode which sort of ruins the whole series in a way, it makes it a bumpy ride. Is it still a good watch, most definitely. I throughly enjoyed it despite its setbacks for me.

It would be completely natural to feel intimidated by all these older, more experienced artists in his group. @mj220991 who, along with @mercipourleslivres and @aysekira is my non-danmei novel guru, has informed me that Wishing You Eternal Happiness by Peng Lai Ke is getting an adaptation.

I am both excited and terrified because except for Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir, it’s my favorite non-danmei novel and so it would be glorious to see it on screen if it’s done right, like Shen Li or Ever Night 1 or Lost You Forever 1, but so often adaptations are disasters (see Dreamer, actually.)

Anyway, I was thinking of who my ideal cast for the OTP would be and here is mine:

Lu Yuxiao as the beautiful Zhen Jiafu, a quiet period woman desperately trying to escape her horrifying fate:

She can do the beauty, elegance, quiet and manipulativeness.

As the depressed, intellectual, kind Pei Youan my choice is Deng Wei:

His playing Tushan Jing totally showed him capable of playing a gentle and intense man.

Anyway, this is such a perfect introvert x introvert, kind x kind, quietly desperate x quietly desperate romance and I hope the drama adaptation does it justice.

As a part 2 for this post I read the reblogs and considered it necessary to add， idk

Audio drama: This should still be considered as canon, I guess? This ep partially reveals a little information, since the final story is dedicated to two students, Li Zhen (黎臻) and Xia Ke（夏可). Qiao Ling, Cheng Xiaoshi, Lu Guang also studied in the same university.

The exact year when this event occurs is not specified, it's unknown whether 1 year or 2 years have passed, as I remember. The time of the episode is Xia Ke's and Li Zhen's senior year, right before their graduation - the trio themselves have already graduated and run a photo studio. The episode itself kinda tell us that the undergraduate degree in their uni lasted 4 years (四年 part), considering how many years Xia Ke and all her friends studied.

So I can assume (but then again it might be different) that this probably applies to all departments, since it was mentioned that Li Zhen is from a music college, Xia Ke's related to physical education.

Xia Ke is about to graduate. Qiao Ling mentions that even if their fields of study were different, Xia Ke is still considered as "學妹", as junior/younger female schoolmate (hope it's correct to say it like this). So I think that the trio also received exactly the undergraduate degree, and graduated at least a year earlier. Just my thought. Otherwise, would it even be proper to call her like that? Cause I'm not sure.

Some stuff, but I don't even know if we can consider it as a general canon. Friendly reminder, that I'm just digging into the details because I'm bored :)
