IR35 Tax Rules: Adrian Chiles' Tribunal Appeal Highlights Challenges for UK Contractors
The recent tax battle between Adrian Chiles and HMRC over IR35 Tax rules or off-payroll working rules has cast a spotlight on this complex piece of UK tax legislation. Many contractors, particularly those in the media industry, find themselves caught in the cross-hairs of HMRC’s heavy-handed application of IR35 tax rules, facing hefty tax bills, assessments and penalties if they are deemed…

Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose (2023) Review
Tumblr media
And the weirdest film title of the year goes too...
Plot: When famed paranormal psychologist Dr Nandor Fodor investigates a family's claim that a talking mongoose lives in their barn, he uncovers a mysterious web of hidden motives. Soon, everyone becomes a suspect in his relentless pursuit of the truth.
The most fascinating fact about Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose aside from its title is that it is based on a true story. Gef was an allegedly talking mongoose that was claimed to inhabit a farmhouse owned by the Irving family. The Irvings' farm was located at Cashen's Gap near the hamlet of Dalby on the Isle of Man. The tabloid press in Britain gave the story extensive coverage in the early 1930s. The Irvings' claims gained the attention of parapsychologists and ghost hunters, such as Harry Price, Hereward Carrington, and Nandor Fodor. Some investigators of the era and contemporary critics have concluded that the phenomenon was a hoax that the Irving family perpetuated by using ventriloquism. Amusingly enough the Irving family in the film are very open about the fact that the daughter is a talented ventriloquist.
The film itself comes off as strangely peculiar. Director Adam Sigal is evidently trying to create a tone of eeriness and mystery, and though there is that constant question throughout if the talking mongoose is real or a fraudulent manifestation, there's almost that sense of why should we care. The dialogue is heavily clunky, aside from the very delightful few scenes in the pub between Simon Pegg (trying his best at a Hungarian accent to questionable results) and Christopher Lloyd, with them talking about the mongoose, spirituality, fraud and at one point Harry Houdini. I found it strangely comforting seeing Lloyd still on top of his game at his age, and Pegg too is enjoyable when allowed to simply go with the flow. However aside from those moments, the script is poor, and as this is very much a talker of a film, there are so many interminably dull stretches of dialogue and conversation. The comedy also hardly lands, with again the key word being peculiar, with the movie attempting humor through strange happenstances, yet aside from the primary Rikki-tikki-tavi (voiced by Neil Gaiman of all folks), those shenanigans are not that interesting nor amusing. Shame, as the cast seems to be really trying, yet the plot seems more befitting for a short film or possibly a little documentary or TV special rather than a full feature length.
The entire movie is in this constant state of meandering as if its characters are stuck in this constant loop of doing nothing. Maybe that is it - the film is saying that life is so boring that people end up finding fascination and obsession over the smallest and silliest of things, like a myth about a mongoose that is able to talk. If so, then that's just sad, and now I am sad. So thank you Nandor Fodor for making me sad. That is exactly what I need when I come back from a long day at work and want to watch a casual movie on Prime. Silly mongoose.
Overall score: 4/10

My ideas for voices for the 13 Primes if they ever get a series of their own.
Prima, the first Prime- Peter Cullen/Garry Chalk (because duh)
Vector Prime, The guardian of time- Richard Newman/David Tennant (because doctor who)
Alpha Trion, keeper of knowledge- Chris McFeely/George Takei
Solus Prime, forger of artifacts- Marlene Aragon/Susan Blu (who better to voice the first female transformer than the voice of the first female transformer)
Micronus Prime, the first Minicon- Johnny Yong Bosch
Alchemist Prime, master of the elements- Thew Adams/Jack Black
Nexus Prime, the first combiner- Scott McNeil (especially if his components get into arguments)
Onyx Prime, the first beast form transformer- David Kaye
Amalgamous Prime, the first to transform- Frank Welker (who better for the bot with a thousand modes than the man with a thousand voices)
Quintus Prime, seeder of life- Clancy Brown
Liege Maximo, the manipulator- Tom Hiddleston (again because duh)
Megatronus, The Fallen- Keith David
The Thirteenth, The Arisen- Judd Nelson (a twist on the theory that they reincarnated as Optimus, this time they reincarnate as Hot Rod/Rodimus) Primus, The life giver- Morgan Freeman/Peter Cullen (I honestly want Peter to voice Primus at some point) Unicron, the chaos bringer- Lee Tockar

The State of Maine Has Chosen a Final Design!!
Tumblr media
This is the new design of the Maine state flag that will be voted on by the public in November!
Personally, I feel that this design will be spectacular flying across a state that has become a second home to me as I've been living in the Portland area for work this summer. I can safely say that if I was registered to vote in Maine I'd be thrilled to have this as my official state flag. I only hope it passes this coming fall. It's been interesting seeing all of the various 'pine tree flag' designs that several members of the community had made. While I didn't see all of the submissions, just this specific design being worked on, I'm told that many of the submissions will be made public for viewing.
I'm not the biggest fan of the fact that the green is two-toned, an opinion I held in the final drafting meeting, but I believe that it may grow on me. It's a nice touch that will be visible up close and look nice on TV broadcasts while not being distracting from a distance. And from a distance you'll still be able to tell that it's a green eastern pine tree. I like the asymmetrical tree, it’ll stand out a lot. The background color, which is called ‘buff’ is also distinct and should look great at a distance.
The design prompt was to base the modern flag on the 1901 pine tree design. And the panel of Maine judges went through a lot and I mean a lot of design configurations for the pine tree. They were happy with this one, the Maine Secretary of State was happy with this one, and NAVA was happy with it after we redesigned the tree several times.
I'm excited to say that I was a (very small) part in the final drafting process this past Sunday (Aug. 4, 2024) with the designers and more experienced NAVA members. In attendance was our amazing Secretary Ted Kaye, and the Maine Secretary of State: honorable Shenna Bellows, and the designer Adam Lemire, among other vexilographers. I'm happy I can finally talk about this publicly, even a day not talking about it drove me crazy.
As I was present for the final drafting meeting, for any interested in more details can send me an ask or reblog and I'll respond as best I can. I won't have all the answers seeing as I'm not exactly the most senior member of NAVA, but also consider this as a general blog AMA.
I can't wait to welcome a new changed state flag later in 2024! Have a great day y'all! (Just realized this is two posts in less than a week, NEW RECORD!)

Are there, by chance, voice files of the female deputy actually speaking, or a name of the voice actor who recorded the sound effects?
The female Deputy never speaks, but it sounds to me like she has the same voice actor as one of the cultists. You can find a transcript of most of her lines in this document if you search for “CULT_FOLLOWER_FEMALE_05”. One of the Angels might be played by the same person too.
I know Randy Yuen did motion capture for the Deputy in general, and maybe the male Deputy has his voice, but there is no information about who played “CULT_FOLLOWER_FEMALE_05” and the female Deputy…
The actor’s name must be in the credits, however, so probably one of these people:
VOICE TALENT Doug Abrahams Marty Adams Claire Armstrong Ted Atherton Kailea Banka Carolina Bartczak Lawrence Bayne Bruce Blain Jesse Bond Sarah Booth Marc-André Boulanger Wyatt Bowen Paul Braunstein Kimberly D. Brooks Jason Bryden Nicki Burke Mark Camacho Braeden Clarke Lucinda Davis Stacey DePass Bruce Edwards Jake Epstein Jonathan Goad Amber Goldfarb Alain Goulem Rob Greenway Gavin Hammon Ian Hanlin Lauren Jackson Julianne Jain Mara Junot Helen King Jameson Kraemer Gabe Kunda Tristan D. Lalla Erica Lindbeck Erin Mathews James Mathis III Jon McLaren Scott McNeil Cynthia Kaye McWilliams Chimwemwe Miller Julie Nathanson Mayko Nguyen Peter Outerbridge Lindsay Owen-Pierre Giles Panton Christopher Parson Kristen Peace Murry Peeters Simon Lee Phillips Geoffrey Pounsett Claire Rankin David Richmond-Peck Cara Ricketts Kyle Rideout Charlotte Rogers Paula Shaw Jesse Sherman Ivan Sherry Howard Siegel Jonathan Silver Dylan Taylor Jeff Teravainen Brett Watson Jane Wheeler Dan White Scott Whyte Debra Wilson Kim Yarbrough Farid Yazdani
And there is a little more information about who played who on IMDb.
This is all I know for the moment... but I hope it helps :)

Meet the Main Four! {Vanished}
Tumblr media
Kennadi, Carter, Adam, and Ella
The four main characters of my long-standing original story, Vanished (created in Oct 2018), pre-inciting incident (the titular “Vanishing”)
To put it simply, Vanished is about four high school Seniors stuck together after everyone disappears, and not only have to get along and repopulate the planet, but determine what caused the “disappearance” in the first place.
It’s a four book series and a WILD ride.
An official introduction to the four survivors!
Tumblr media
Kennadi Myers, Student Body President of Kaye’s Creek Academy, and the protagonist of “Vanished”. An incredibly humble and selfless girl with a heart of gold, she is determined to love others unconditionally and bring them joy. Whatever the cost, she is determined to improve the lives of others around her. But will her endless dedication and sacrifice be her greatest strength, or the source of her downfall? As the designated leader of the four survivors, she’s determined to keep everyone happy and safe, ensuring everyone is healing and able to access necessary resources. But with the weight of this daunting task and her own survival at hand, how will she find out how everything happened, and is there any hope for a solution?
Tumblr media
Ella Perez, Kennadi’s best friend and an undeniable hopeless romantic, who loves writing in her journal: poems, diary entries, stories, scripts, and songs. Having known Kennadi since middle school, the two have been tied at the hip as each other’s best friend. She is unquestionably Kennadi’s right hand, and will do anything to ensure her well-being. But Ella dreams of being more, determined to ask out the woman of her dreams to Prom. That is… until the vanishing. With survival on the line and the loss of everything she once knew, her personal romantic endeavors must be put on hold. But if one thing’s for sure, she’s grateful that she still has Kennadi in her life to rely and depend on in her hard times.
Tumblr media
Adam Gadot, a reserved and quiet boy who lives his life in silence, preferring to remain in the background with his headphones blocking out any noise. He’s known Kennadi from a distance since Kindergarten, but they don’t know each other well. Hell, no one really knows Adam well. Not even Carter, a long time friend since the beginning of High School. All that’s really known is that he streams video games on various platforms with a sizeable audience, the rest is a mystery. With a past full of rejection and abandonment, trust is not something he lends out to anyone. But after truly losing everything in his entire life, learning to trust again is going to be a difficult process.
Tumblr media
Carter Ryland, one of the most prominent and popular players on the Kaye’s Creek Academy football team! An incredibly social, hyperactive, extroverted boy with his entire future in College Football and (hopefully) the NFL planned out for him. He’s got some of the best friends he’s ever had, notoriety from his peers, and adoring parents. But with everything he’s worked for coming crashing down with the vanishing, emotional outbursts and anger rise to the surface. What will be the key to softening his hardened, yet fragile, heart?
YIPPEE HERE IS THEM 👏👏. Feel free to make assumptions about the characters and story, and DEFINITELY feel free to ask questions!!
