hell if i remember what i was reading in my teens (not a lot) but i know i was an older kid when i first read mockingbird by kathryn erskine.
definitely look up trigger warnings before reading bc it deals with heavy subject matter but the main character is a little girl who is autistic (referred to as having asperger’s in the book — ymmv but it was published in 2007 so i give it a pass) and seeing a girl that acted like me to an extent and that i understood behavior-wise was revolutionary. i think it still makes me cry whenever i reread it. lives in my mind rent free
what's a book you read as a teenager that was so magical and personally profound to you it literally changed your life, doesnt matter if the book was actually well written or not. mine's probably the catcher in the rye
#text#books#mockingbird#kathryn erskine#there are scenes in it that still stick in my head and i think abt frequently

New Shows Coming in 2024
Now that we discussed the new movies coming in 2023, how about a list of the new shows I am most excited about coming to television and streamers in 2023? So I present the shows I am most excited about that are likely coming out this year (in alphabetical order):
3 Body Problem (Netflix) - From David Benioff and D.B. Weiss comes this science-fiction series based on a Chinese novel of the same name
The Acolyte (Disney+) - Taking place approximately 100 years before the birth of Anakin Skywalker is this new Star Wars series starring Amandla Stenberg.
Agatha: Darkhold Diaries (Disney+) - Kathryn Hahn reprises the role of Agatha Harkness in this Marvel Studios series co-starring Aubrey Plaza.
Creature Commandos (Max): This animated series is the kick-off of the new DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Whatever that means.
Dune: Prophecy (Max) - Set 10,000 years before the films, comes this series about the origins of the Bene Gesserit.
Fallout (Amazon Prime) - Based on the acclaimed video game franchise comes this post-apocalyptic drama.
The Franchise (HBO) - From creator Armando Iannucci comes this new comedy about the production of a superhero film.
The Girls on the Bus (Max) - Melissa Benoist stars in this political drama about female journalists embedded with presidential campaigns.
Manhunt (AppleTV+) - Follow the chase for John Wilkes Booth in his historical miniseries series starring Tobias Menzies. The show is based on the non-fiction book of the same name, but unlike other books with shows based on them coming out in 2024, I actually read this one.
Masters of the Air (AppleTV+) - Who wouldn’t be excited for a new World War II mini-series from the creators of Band of Brothers and The Pacific?
Mr. and Mrs. Smith (Amazon Prime) - Donald Glover and Maya Erskine star in this series based on the 2005 film of the same name.
The Penguin (Max) - Colin Farrell is once again Oswald Cobblepot in this limited series that takes place a week following the events of The Batman.
Ripley (Netflix) - Andrew Scott is Tom Ripley in this new series based on the novel The Talented Mr. Ripley.
Shōgun (Hulu/FX) - Visit 17th century Japan in this historical drama based on a 1975 novel.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew (Disney+) - From Jon Watts and Christopher Ford comes this Amblin-style story set in the Star Wars universe starring Jude Law.
Looking back at the 15 shows on my New Shows Coming in 2023 list, I watched 6, haven’t started 6, and 3 are finally being released in 2024.

April 7th - 30 Days of Autism Acceptance
April 7: Talk about autism in the media. Do you think that autism is typically portayed well? Badly? Is there anything you'd like to see more of when it comes to autistic representation? Who are your favorite autistic characters? Do you have any headcanons?
Personally, I don’t think that there is enough representation of autism in the media. The only media platform that I’ve really seen a properly depicted autistic character in is a book I adore. Also, I’ve seen most autistics portrayed either as savants or incompetent. Autism is a diverse disorder and presents itself differently in everyone therefore, for an accurate representation of it, they have to show different presentations of it.
Personally, I would like to see more autistics in literature, TV shows, medias, etc. It would make the media all the more special to me if there was an autistic character in it. I want to find a media that has a strong, autistic lead (whether it be a superhero thing or just any genre) who’s autism is portrayed correctly. I do want to see more representation for women and girls on the spectrum also. However, I don’t think that every single book should have to have an autistic character in it. Some people have autism, some don’t. Not everyone has it therefore, I don’t expect every single media to have a character on the spectrum.
My favorite autistic character has to be Caitlin Smith from Kathryn Erskine’s book Mockingbird. I loved the book, although it is for a younger audience, and really connect with Caitlin. Also, although the presentation isn’t the best, I like Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory. Symmetra (Satya Vaswani) from Overwatch is another favorite of mine; I really relate to her, especially so her need for things to be in her image of perfect. Additionally, I like Renee from the short film “Loop”; the portrayal of Level 3 Autism Spectrum Disorder in that short film has to be one of the best I’ve come across. Isadora Smackle from Girl Meets World is another character I hold dear to my heart.
I do have a few headcanons, but not too many when it comes to fandoms. I don’t really like to change the characters when writing fanfiction unless I get a specific idea; that also pertains to the subjects of ships: I almost always prefer the canon relationships over the fan-made ships. It’s just how I am, I dunno.

Quer dizer... que não sou só eu que sou especial? Tudo na vida é?
Isso mesmo.
Acho que a boa notícia é que todo mundo vai ter que aguentar ser especial porque todo mundo está vivo.

Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine
232 pages
TW: some ableism, bullying, past death, past violence (school shooting), some self injury (unintentional)
So I picked this out at the library on a whim because 1. the author is from VA (where I'm from) and 2. the main character is autistic, and I work with autistic people/have autistic friends therefore I was ALSO very weary of it because I knew it could easily misrepresent the autistic community and be ableist.
I am not autistic and am waiting to get an actually autistic opinion on it, but I did not think this was the worst that it could have been. Yes, there were some cringey parts. Yes, there was a part where I thought about disregarding the book. However, I also must say there were enough parts that I liked where I thought it was worth the read (again, I am not autistic though).
What I did like was that almost all of the cringey parts were things neurotypical people were saying to the main character - an autistic fifth grader named Caitlin. They do use the word high functioning one time, and there is an interesting part where she screams that she is not autistic because her idea of autism is another student who does not talk and eats dirt. She does know that she has Asperger's though because there is a part where she thinks her school counselor has Asperger's too. This school counselor does attempt to explain the autism spectrum, although she referred to it more as behavioral spectrum. (Again, there is efinitely some ableism going on)
Ah, yes, there is a school counselor who works on social skills with her, and
The third reason I picked the book: Caitlin has lost her older brother, who she was very close to - I was interested in the grief/trauma aspect... As it turns out, her middle school aged brother was killed in a school shooting (the author apparently wrote this book with the VT massacre in mind) thus really making me think about trauma. Oh, and I did quite a bit of crying during this read, just some tears not sobbing. I'm a sensitive soul.
I liked that sensory needs were included in the book, and we see Caitlin's thought process behind them, however her neurotypical classmates find her behavior to be disturbing, and the adults are trying to make her normal (sigh but probably accurate to what would be happening in a school). Stuff like "Looking At The Person" and having to work really hard to understand people and sensory overload and even wanting to be alone are all emphasized throughout.
Two of the main ideas of Mockingbird are empathy and closure.
It's a pretty short book for all the things it tackles, and I would have loved to see things hashed out more (learning about and accepting her autistic identity. It does have a sweet/happy ending that shows the healing happening, which means a lot to me (I like closure... an aspect of this book).
At the end of it: I did not hate this book, but I don't know that it's something I would reread. I don't necessarily regret reading it. I liked the storyline outside of the obvious things, and it's not the worst portrayal of autism I've ever seen. Forever the optimist, I am willing to just look at the good parts of things and ignore the bad. I think the author tried her best** and wonder if she spoke to many autistic people while writing this. I would recommend getting this book from the library and giving it a try rather than spending money on it.
Sorry that that wasn't very eloquent. I'd love to hear other opinions on this book.
** I thought the author's note was horrible, and if I had read the note first before the book, I may not have gone through with reading it.
