Book summaries below:
Winter's Orbit by Everina Maxwell
While the Iskat Empire has long dominated the system through treaties and political alliances, several planets, including Thea, have begun to chafe under Iskat's rule. When tragedy befalls Imperial Prince Taam, his Thean widower, Jainan, is rushed into an arranged marriage with Taam's cousin, the disreputable Kiem, in a bid to keep the rising hostilities between the two worlds under control.
But when it comes to light that Prince Taam's death may not have been an accident, and that Jainan himself may be a suspect, the unlikely pair must overcome their misgivings and learn to trust one another as they navigate the perils of the Iskat court, try to solve a murder, and prevent an interplanetary war... all while dealing with their growing feelings for each other.

Snapdragon by Kat Leyh
Snap’s town had a witch.
At least, that’s how the rumor goes. But in reality, Jacks is just a Crocs-wearing, internet-savvy old lady who sells roadkill skeletons online. It’s creepy, sure, but Snap thinks it's kind of cool, too.
Snap needs a favor from this old woman, though, so she begins helping Jacks with her strange work. Snap gets to know her and realizes that Jacks may in fact have real magic—and an unlikely connection to Snap’s family’s past.
Graphic novel, fantasy, magic, coming of age, middle grade

Comic Book Saturday
Tumblr media
Well, that was different. Also, sort of has a very good message of ‘don’t make big decisions when you’re tipsy or drunk’ (although maybe that wasn’t the main point of the book). Three mermaids do a spell so that they can masquerade as humans on land and get some more wine (they’re out of shipwreck wine). They have fun, that is until the next morning when they realize that they don’t know how to turn themselves back (another lesson, always learn how to stop before you learn how to go). And so they try to figure out how to live on land, while they also try to figure out how to return to the sea too.
This was so awesomely hilarious. While I have pointed out the lessons that sorta came up in the story, that was definitely not the point of this book. It was just a fun fun read, awesome.
You may like this book If you Liked: Overlord by Kugane Maruyama, J & K by John Pham, or Strange Planet by Nathan W. Pyle

BOOK REVIEW: Snapdragon - Kat Leyh
★★★★★ - 5 stars
"Witches don't fit into the roles we're supposed to. So we're always on the outside. And so, witches got made into scary things to be feared. To excuse the cruel things done to us. That's what scared folks still do."
Tumblr media
It was unintentional for Snap to meet her town's supposed witch, and yet once she did, she realised the old woman was far from what rumours suggested. Jacks turned out to really just be an old lady who wore crocs constantly, happened to be shockingly internet savvy and reconstructed and sold roadkill skeletons. Strange, but not a witch as people had suggested. Yet, as Snap got to know Jacks better, she realised the old lady in fact did have real magic, and an unexpected past connection to Snap's family...
The diversity in this book was outstanding - with lesbian and transgender representation. Simply, the amount of representation perfectly displays the message of the book: to be yourself, no matter whether society dubs you as "strange" for it, and the importance of having confidence in who you truly are.
Snap was definitely my favourite character (though very closely followed by Jacks) - I just loved her energy. She was stereotypically "boyish" but she owned it and didn't care what others thought of her for it. Snap was just downright weird, and I couldn't have asked for a better main character. Jacks was absolutely hilarious, and didn't fail to make me laugh once throughout the entire book. Her character was just so intriguing - an old lady with a crocs addiction, who reconstructed skeletons as a means of gaining money (quite genuinely, I have never seen a character like her). Then there's Lu, who I just wanted to give a massive hug to throughout the entire book.
The fact that every character had their own storyline was so cool, and the way the characters' storylines interwove with each others was, frankly, beautiful - such as how Snap's grandma and Jacks' storylines link, and the true story behind Snap's family's "curse".
A brilliant book for outcasts across the world, Snapdragon is without a doubt the best graphic novel I have ever read. With a balanced mixture between fantasy and realism, a unique storyline and lovable characters, it's safe to say that Snapdragon will undoubtedly become one of your all time favourites.

Book summaries below:
The Radiant Emperor duology (She Who Became the Sun, He Who Drowned the World) by Shelley Parker-Chan
In a famine-stricken village on a dusty yellow plain, two children are given two fates. A boy, greatness. A girl, nothingness…
In 1345, China lies under harsh Mongol rule. For the starving peasants of the Central Plains, greatness is something found only in stories. When the Zhu family’s eighth-born son, Zhu Chongba, is given a fate of greatness, everyone is mystified as to how it will come to pass. The fate of nothingness received by the family’s clever and capable second daughter, on the other hand, is only as expected.
When a bandit attack orphans the two children, though, it is Zhu Chongba who succumbs to despair and dies. Desperate to escape her own fated death, the girl uses her brother’s identity to enter a monastery as a young male novice. There, propelled by her burning desire to survive, Zhu learns she is capable of doing whatever it takes, no matter how callous, to stay hidden from her fate.
After her sanctuary is destroyed for supporting the rebellion against Mongol rule, Zhu takes the chance to claim another future her brother’s abandoned greatness.

Thirsty Mermaids by Kat Leyh
Fresh out of shipwreck wine, three tipsy mermaids—Pearl, Tooth, and Eez—hit on the idea of magically masquerading as humans and sneaking onto land to indulge in much more drinking and a whole lot of fun right in the heart of a local seaside tourist trap. But the good times abruptly end the next morning when, through the haze of killer hangovers, the trio realizes they never actually learned how to break the spell, and are now stuck on land for the foreseeable future. Which means everything from: enlisting the aid of their I-know-we-just-met-but-can-we-crash-with-you bartender friend, struggling to make sense of the human world around them, to even trying to get jobs with zero skill sets . . . all while attempting to somehow return to the sea and making the most of their current situation with tenacity and camaraderie (especially if someone else is buying).

Hey QLL, I need some help finding books for one of the kids I teach! Any recommendations for an aroace tween who has expressed a love of fantasy adventure, but wants absolutely zero romance plots?
hello! hmm not all of these are books we’ve got in QLL but we do have several recs:
The Witch Boy by Molly Knox Ostertag
Two Dark Moons by Avi Silver
the first two books in the Protector of the Small quartet by Tamora Pierce
Snapdragon by Kat Leyh (backstory romantic plotline for the MC’s grandmother, but none for the MC)
The Tea Dragon Society by K. O’Neill (side characters are together, but it’s established - them getting together is not a plot line)
Cameron Battle and the Hidden Kingdoms by Jamar J. Perry (*potential* crush if you read between the lines, but that’s it)
Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger
