BOOK REVIEW: Snapdragon - Kat Leyh
★★★★★ - 5 stars
"Witches don't fit into the roles we're supposed to. So we're always on the outside. And so, witches got made into scary things to be feared. To excuse the cruel things done to us. That's what scared folks still do."
It was unintentional for Snap to meet her town's supposed witch, and yet once she did, she realised the old woman was far from what rumours suggested. Jacks turned out to really just be an old lady who wore crocs constantly, happened to be shockingly internet savvy and reconstructed and sold roadkill skeletons. Strange, but not a witch as people had suggested. Yet, as Snap got to know Jacks better, she realised the old lady in fact did have real magic, and an unexpected past connection to Snap's family...
The diversity in this book was outstanding - with lesbian and transgender representation. Simply, the amount of representation perfectly displays the message of the book: to be yourself, no matter whether society dubs you as "strange" for it, and the importance of having confidence in who you truly are.
Snap was definitely my favourite character (though very closely followed by Jacks) - I just loved her energy. She was stereotypically "boyish" but she owned it and didn't care what others thought of her for it. Snap was just downright weird, and I couldn't have asked for a better main character. Jacks was absolutely hilarious, and didn't fail to make me laugh once throughout the entire book. Her character was just so intriguing - an old lady with a crocs addiction, who reconstructed skeletons as a means of gaining money (quite genuinely, I have never seen a character like her). Then there's Lu, who I just wanted to give a massive hug to throughout the entire book.
The fact that every character had their own storyline was so cool, and the way the characters' storylines interwove with each others was, frankly, beautiful - such as how Snap's grandma and Jacks' storylines link, and the true story behind Snap's family's "curse".
A brilliant book for outcasts across the world, Snapdragon is without a doubt the best graphic novel I have ever read. With a balanced mixture between fantasy and realism, a unique storyline and lovable characters, it's safe to say that Snapdragon will undoubtedly become one of your all time favourites.

“Remember, it is only a game”
I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday! I’ve been feeling that annual state of limbo between December and New Year’s. I haven’t had a good chunk of time to dedicate to drawing since the move but I’m gradually getting back to the routine. I begin officially drawing pages for Trumpets next month so I’m gearing up for 2025 to be a busy year!

I played cryptids on flashpoint and i just realized how suspicious Harold Mews is because he has you go against the villain (gretchen) even though she almost killed you?
The adults are affected with the crazy :p
He did kinda pressure a 10 year old into risking her life only a few hours after she almost died:
Some Poptropica characters...
Are good people and want to accomplish good things, but they will have their questionable moments.
Or they will say some questionable things XD
Because nobody's perfect, they've gotta work it, again and again till they get it right! (Haha)

Strange Bedfellows (2025)
Oberon is finding his way back after a very public “breakdown,” but when he develops the ability to conjure his dreams in real life—including a facsimile of his high school crush, Kon—he might have more on his plate than he originally thought.
Strange Bedfellows is my new sci-fi romance graphic novel from Harper Collins, coming to you in 2025. This is why I've been on hiatus from Witchy for the past couple of years! The pages above were made for my pitch to publishers, and don't reflect the final product, but I still think they're a neat introduction to the story and world. I'm gonna try my best to post about it more on here. <---guy who got a couple of tagged reblogs on their previous post and has awakened the dopamine machine
you can see a whole lot more from this project by subscribing to my patreon.

There’s been a bit of a lapse since Chapter 6, and I’m new to the Witchy scene so I don’t know whether the series is expected to continue, but will there be a Chapter 7?
I have full intention to continue Witchy! It's been on hiatus since 2021 due to me shifting focus to work full time on my graphic novel, Strange Bedfellows. I talked a little more about this in the news section at the end of chapter 6, here, but I think it's worthwhile for me to check back in now with an update.
I should be wrapping the bulk of the work on Strange Bedfellows in mid-January. I still have a second book deal with my publisher, but I am building that project and its schedule around me only working 4 days a week on it, leaving me time to flex my creative muscles on other pursuits; one of those being Witchy.
Lately, when the inspiration strikes (and I have ten minutes of free time), I've been chipping slowly away at the script for chapter 7. I am still very much excited for where the story of Witchy goes.
The front half of my 2024 is loaded with some work trips and getting started on my next book, but I would like for Witchy to be back around that midway mark at the latest. Realistically though, when it returns I don't want to promise that the updates will be weekly or punctual, as I've become quite burnt out working on my current book while juggling the fated work/life balance. I'll do my best to update with some frequency, but my priority is my sanity.
Sadly, despite my passion for it, Witchy is a project that no one has ever wanted to pay me 1 million dollars for so I can work on it full time until it's done, but maybe if I'm lucky I'll get netflix money for Bedfellows.
If you'd like to contribute to the "please Ariel for the love of god I need to know what happens next to Nyneve" tip jar, my patreon is full of behind the scenes work on Bedfellows, my next book, and of course, Witchy.
TL;DR: I'm hoping Witchy will be back around halfway through next year.

Favorite Gorillaz member?
What are the Hellaween crew's favorite movies?
Any other original graphic novels you plan to do?
When did you get into Invader Zim and Gorillaz?
It changes all the time, maybe Murdoc right now Gwen's favorite movie is probably a horror comedy like Little Shop of Horrors or something witchy like The Craft. I don't think Miles or Sloane would have seen too many movies unless Gwen's showed them? So let's say Miles' favorite is the cinematic masterpiece Shrek and Sloane really enjoyed Blade. Hiro's favorite is maaaybeee Pacific Rim and Bea's Return of the Living Dead? yes!
I got into ZIM right when it started airing in 2001 and I got into Gorillaz when Demon Days came out

New Releases - Week of Oct. 9, 2023
We have history, fantasy, a contemporary rom-com, a memoir, and a retelling this week. It's quite a range in just four books. Does anything catch your eye?
Brooms by Jasmine Walls Levine Querido
It’s 1930s Mississippi. Magic is permitted only in certain circumstances, and by certain people. Unsanctioned broom racing is banned. But for those who need the money, or the thrills…it’s there to be found.
Meet Billie Mae, captain of the Night Storms racing team, and Loretta, her best friend and second-in-command. They’re determined to make enough money to move out west to a state that allows Black folks to legally use magic and take part in national races.
Cheng-Kwan – doing her best to handle the delicate and dangerous double act of being the perfect “son” to her parents, and being true to herself while racing.
Mattie and Emma — Choctaw and Black — the youngest of the group and trying to dodge government officials who want to send them and their newly-surfaced powers away to boarding school.
And Luella, in love with Billie Mae. Her powers were sealed away years ago after she fought back against the government. She’ll do anything to prevent the same fate for her cousins.
Brooms is a queer, witchy Fast and the Furious that shines light on history not often told – it’s everything you’d ever want to read in a graphic novel.
The Fall of Whit Rivera by Crystal Maldonado Holiday House
Frenemies Whit and Zay have been at odds for years (ever since he broke up with her in, like, the most embarrassing way imaginable), so when they’re forced to organize the fall formal together, it’s a literal disaster. Sparks fly as Whitney—type-A, passionate, a perfectionist, and a certified sweater-weather fanatic—butts heads with Zay, a dry, relaxed skater boy who takes everything in stride. But not all of those sparks are bad. . . .
Has their feud been a big misunderstanding all along?
Blisteringly funny and profoundly well-observed, The Fall of Whit Rivera is a snug and cozy autumn romcom that also tackles weightier topics like PCOS, chronic illness, sexuality, fatphobia, Latine identity, and class. Funny, honest, insightful, romantic, and poignant, it is classic Crystal Maldonado—and it will have her legion of fans absolutely swooning.
Huda F Cares by Huda Fahmy Dial Books
Huda and her sisters can’t believe it when her parents announce that they’re actually taking a vacation this summer . . . to DISNEY WORLD! But it’s not quite as perfect as it seems. First Huda has to survive a 24-hour road trip from Michigan to Florida, with her sisters annoying her all the way. And then she can’t help but notice the people staring at her and her family when they pray in public. Back home in Dearborn she and her family blend right in because there are so many other Muslim families, but not so much in Florida and along the way.
It’s a vacation of forced (but unexpectly successful?) sisterly bonding, a complicated new friendship, a bit more independence, and some mixed feelings about her family’s public prayers. Huda is proud of her religion and who she is, but she still sure wishes she didn’t care so much what other people thought.
Realm of Wonders (The Queen’s Council #3) by Alexandra Monir Disney Hyperion
Jasmine thought that she had earned her happily ever after when she and Aladdin defeated Jafar. Then her beloved father dies and, overnight, all her plans for the future change. Instead of her wedding, she’s now planning a funeral and a coronation—her coronation, to become the first woman to rule Agrabah. Jasmine has always been headstrong, but for the first time in her life, she finds herself faltering.
Then from beyond the grave, her father seems to pass along a message: Someone is coming. She must find the book. Before Jasmine can figure out what that means, her claim to the throne is called into question.
Her father’s old counsellors decree that the best way to determine the true ruler is a tournament; a series of tests, each one increasing in difficulty—and danger. Now, with help from the mystical Queen’s Council, Jasmine must assemble her own team of advisers, win the tournament, and uncover the mystery of her father’s last message, so she can prove to her people—and herself—that she deserves to rule Agrabah.

Dying Inside by Pete Wentz & Hannah Klein, illustrated by Lisa Sterle
3.5 stars
This was a fun read! Lisa Sterle's art was beautiful, I liked the story for the most part but thought some bits seemed a little random (why did they have a friend breakup for like 3 pages which literally affected nothing...). I liked the twist and ofc witchy stories are always a fun time. I thought the romance was sweet, I thought they saw each other as best friends a little too quickly for my taste but it developed well after that. I also like how this book combined ideas of autonomy with mental health and different forms of ethics, and I really liked the happy ending. I also thought the darker humor came across well in my opinion, it was pretty funny at times.
I'd recommend this for people who want a fun paranormal read for Halloween, fans of witchy books, and people looking for graphic novels with dark humor. However, if you struggle with mental health, definitely check the content warnings first!
