Recently I reread Mater arc and wanted to make post about Kanda and the ways he shows his care about others. It can also be counted as yullen post because in this arc lays foundation for their future dynamics.
Okay, I’m starting from the scene in mess hall, when Kanda confronts Finders about how their mourning for lost comrades ruin his appetite. (He is being asshole here, let’s be honest). Notice what he said to them:
While sounding harsh it’s actually sincere advise coming from Kanda who, unlike them, can’t leave Order out of his own free will.
Allen interrupts, and Kanda tells he can die very soon here. Knowing his history, it’s kinda explains his behavior with Allen. Why become close with someone who can end up dead very soon? Kanda prefer to snap at people to keep them at arm length.
(Also Kanda lied here. He never stopped using ‘Beansprout’ as nickname for Allen. What about hating the ones who don’t keep their promises, huh, Kanda? What a hypocrite).
Adding this panel with reaction to joined mission because it’s hilarious.
Later on their way, after all his ‘blablabla, you will die soon’ Kanda still explains Allen things he doesn’t know about when he asks without much fuss. Don’t know why animators gave this scene to Toma instead.
When they arrive to Mater, almost all Finders are dead. Kanda reminds Allen not to rely on him. He may sound cold and uncaring but I feel it’s actually opposite – he tells Allen to try and survive on his own, because Kanda can’t guaranty he can help him.
He even observe Allen’s fight for a moment, before going to secure Innocence. And after what again reminded Allen what he can’t help him. But threw a last glance at him anyway. Obviously he was concerned.
Kanda talks with Lala and Guzol. First he says bluntly he would prefer to take Innocence immediately but doesn’t do it after Lala’s plea. He even apologies to them.
But after his encounter with level two he drastically change his mind and even angry at Allen for not doing it immediately. What happened? Kanda says it himself – circumstances. He himself badly injured, Allen is injured, even Toma. Yes, Kanda has some pity for Lala and Guzol but he prioritize his comrades survival. They still need to secure Innocence but trying to protect Lala and Guzol would make it harder, for Kanda it doesn’t worth risking their lives.
He practically tells what to Allen. And Kanda himself is sacrifice Order was willing to make to save humanity. Unwilling sacrifice.
But Allen is okay with being sacrifice. He volunteers. And it makes Kanda very-very angry. He wouldn’t be this angry if he didn’t care in first place.
I bet he hit a nerve here. Telling this to Kanda, who was sacrifice to win a war. Kanda, who never wanted to be one, and here’s Allen, who is ready to lay down his life willingly. That’s their fundamental difference, the point of their conflict.
Hence Kanda’s rage. He asking Allen if he don’t have anything worth living for.
But he calms down pretty quickly hearing his answer. And listens Allen.
He disagree with Allens’ views but at least he acknowledge them.
Akuma attacks and Kanda visibly concerned about reckless Beansprout.
Aaand he protects Allen. After he so loudly proclaimed he isn’t going to save him if something happens. Also, he really listened and now reminds Allen about his wish to protect Lala and Guzol.
Look at this smile. Allen realizes Kanda cares, despite his speech about how he hates him.
To the last scene. Kanda notices Allen’s depressed mood and suggest solution he can think of. Notice how he doesn’t insist here and being pretty considerate of Allen’s feelings. No harsh words, no demands.
He even tries to console him, kinda, sharing his own philosophy.
Allen once again understands what Kanda trying to do and answers what by sharing his true feelings.
And I think Kanda remembers his words pretty well. At the end of Alma’s arc he says this:
I don’t know japanese, but according to translate app his words also can be translated as ‘Because you were here I was saved’.
TLDR: Kanda permanently angry at Allen because Allen is okay with sacrificing himself for other people’ sake. He can’t accept it because he, Alma, Marie were made to be sacrifices against their will. Kanda actually cares a lot and rejects Allen’s choice to always put himself in harm’s ways and not thinking about himself first.

[D. Gray Man] How you met
Made for dgm week 2022! first prompt was beginnings. Includes: Allen Walker, Lavi and Komui Lee! (all set in modern AU with a GN!reader!)
wordcount: 1.2k words warnings: not much! pure fluff, lavi’s a little bit silly billy.
__
Allen who meets you for the first time at his usual coffee shop. He didn’t mean to be rude, really, he never is with strangers! But he just so happens to be late for that terrible morning class he’s dreading every Wednesday morning and does not have the patience required to handle having spilled coffee on his jacket. A swear word or two filled his very... colorful sentences.
Allen who recoils the instant he realized the coffee hit you both and starts apologizing profusely. You send him a warm laugh as you reach behind him for napkins, “yeah, mornings are the worst, right?”
Allen who immediately starts blushing and stuttering, as he tries (keyword: tries) to help by taking the cups and putting them on the counter but as he reached for napkins as well he knocks over the cup again – it’s empty of course, so it didn’t give more work per say, but it did make him more embarrassed.
Allen who is completely enraptured by your easy-going attitude and kind smile – and your eyes, they were so pretty! But as soon as you’re done drying your jackets off you look at your watch, “shoot!” is all you get out before running towards the door, “sorry, I’ll buy you a coffee next time we meet!”
Allen who stands dumbfounded and frozen in his spot until a barista gently nudges him and he realizes that he too, is very late for something.
Allen who arrives and opens the door for the class, ready for an earful but barely registers the yelling about yet another “late-comer” because the first thing he sees is you, on front row, smiling sheepishly with a pen in hand.
Allen who makes it a point to sit next to you from then on, even timing his coffee runs Wednesday mornings so that you can go to the class together. One day you propose the idea of doing the coffee runs separately, taking each other’s orders with you on differentiating weeks, and his reaction was equal parts distressed and embarrassed.
Allen who gathers the courage to confess his feelings as the argument as to why you should do the coffee run together. You bark out a loud laugh at this but he didn’t miss the way your laugh had a nervous tint to it and the way you – almost like you’re shy – tells him you feel the same way about him and if he wanted to maybe have a coffee date tomorrow?
------
Lavi who meets you through Kanda, and who can’t really wrap his head around the fact that Kanda had a friend he didn’t know about for years. Turns out you were neighbors through childhood and he’d begrudgingly accepted your company early on as the path of least resistance.
Lavi who immediately gets heart eyes but before he can yell out “strike!” is punched in the gut by Kanda who, with a trademark Kanda Glare™, threatens to kill Lavi if he even so much as finishes that thought.
Lavi who immediately panics because oh no, the most beautiful person he’s ever seen has Kanda freaking Yuu as a pseudo big brother, how will this ever work out in his favor?
Lavi who dramatically goes through a romantic stupor that lasts weeks and, much to the distress of his friends, doesn’t end until the next time he sees you.
Lavi who gets Allen in on his plan to talk to you without Kanda nearby, Allen happy to oblige to a plan that would piss Kanda off in the process and get his friend to stop talking like he was a knight in a shitty romantic fantasy book.
Lavi who gets to ask you out and while you look excited for a second tells him that you’d only heard bad things about him, “I hear you don’t take relationships seriously”, “you fall for every attractive person you meet” and – with a small smile, “is beauty all that matters to you?” said in the exact same tone as Odette in the swan princess (he’d know, he’s seen it a thousand times).
Lavi who realizes you’re into him as well but is apprehensive based on his not-so-amazing track record of romantic relationships (he’s sure Kanda isn’t helping him out either)
Lavi who sets up a movie night for you all, purposely putting on Richard Rich’s The Swan Princess and ends up singing the entire “This is my idea” with you – and the rest of the songs, for good measure.
Lavi who, as everyone’s going home for the evening gets a slip of paper from you with your number on and, with stars in his eyes, goes home, ready to text you and really woo you.
_____
Komui who agreed to accompany Lenalee on her event with her art class. They were having a showing of their works from the past semester where friends and family were invited. After the introduction and talk from the teacher, Komui finds himself alone as Lenalee is standing with her friends.
Komui who has a hard time… interpreting the art in the way he was sure it was meant to, feeling like his mind is far too mathematical and square for these kinds of things – but wanting to support Lenalee nonetheless.
Komui who dazes out in front of a painting, not sure what it was supposed to symbolize. “I think that one means exorcising the devil within us all,” a voice next to him says, making him turn his head in surprise. You smiled gently at him, mirroring his pose.
Komui who looks at you dumbfounded, admiring your features and the way you drank from the glass in your hand. “Oh sorry, I’ll leave you to interpreting, you just looked kinda… lost to me,” you laugh, raising your arms.
Komui who ends up chuckling while looking back at the painting in front of him, “yeah, I’m not… good with… this,” he gestures to the art on the walls, “I’m merely here as support.” You smiled while raising your glass to him, “supporter here as well, though I do lean to the creative side myself.”
Komui who nods and ends up spending most of the night walking around with you, listening to your takes on the art, smiling and as you both walk up to the snack table for another glass, Lenalee stands partially hidden behind a wall, observing the two of you, secretly happy for her brother and snickering with Allen and Lavi about it.
Komui who completely forgets Lenalee’s art while observing you until the last minute, subconsciously taking you by the hand and dragging you to her art. He gets lost in your analysis of it until you speak again after a pause, “this one’s very… homey… feeling,” you smile, leaning forward to read the small plague underneath it, “To my brother, for making a home, it reads,” you say, turning to him.
Komui who completely tears up as you read it out loud, looking around the room for Lenalee who, as if on cue, stands before him (as if she’d perhaps followed him around without his knowledge) and try to calm him down while apologizing to you for this outburst.
Komui who barely registers you handing him a handkerchief while smiling, “I don’t mind emotional men,” you’d winked before turning around and leaving. Komui was about to blow his nose on the handkerchief before Lenalee took it from him hastily, “don’t! This got their number on it!”

Spin The Bottle with any of the DGM characters that you're comfortable writing????? (but like obviously when Kanda spins the bottle it has to land on the reader [me] because YOU KNOW WHY OK????????) ilysm!!! 😍
I LOVE super cliche shit like spin the bottle and seven minutes in heaven and just yES! Thank you, I’m gonna go a bit nuts with this oops-
✧・゚: *✧・゚:* spin the bottle *・゚*:・゚✧
Okay I think Link is a lil cutie so I had to include him
He’s so cute and innocent that he probably doesn’t even realize what game it is that everyone is playing tbh
And if he has heard of the game before, he probably doesn’t understand what it entails
But whenever he spins the bottle and it lands on you? Poor baby is clueless
You start blushing and he’s so confused until it’s explained to him and then he’s even more red than you are
Link is such a gentleman and will not kiss you unless you tell him that you want him to
It really isn’t about his ego or anything like that, he just doesn’t want to make you uncomfortable
When you’ve finally convinced him that you want him to kiss you, he’ll gently cup your cheek before pressing an even softer kiss to your lips
Lavi and Lenalee will cheer the two of you on, knowing about your crush on him
After the game is over and everyone has dispersed, he’ll pull you to the side to talk about what happened
If you tell him about your crush on him, he’ll get just as red, if not more so, than he did earlier
Surprisingly, he’ll admit that he reciprocates how you feel, he’s just so nervous of rejection and he worries that his job is too demanding for him to have a happy, healthy relationship
After his own confession, he’ll pull you into a loving kiss, signaling the start of your relationship
I think Allen is aware of what spin the bottle is
In fact, I think it was his idea in the first place, especially after a little convincing on Lavi’s part
When it’s your turn, he is literally bouncing in anticipation
He so wants the bottle to land on him
It’s just his bad luck that it lands between him and Lavi, the latter of which quickly telling you to re-spin to cheer him up
Much to everyone’s surprise, after you’ve gone again, it lands on Allen
He nearly jumps out of his spot to kiss you, causing you to giggle and blush
You’re just too cute when you blush and your little laugh makes him blush as well
Honestly, he grabs both sides of your face before smashing his lips onto yours
The kiss is a bit awkward, but the intentions within it are very apparent
For the rest of the night, the two of you steal glances at each other, looking away and blushing as your gazes meet one another each and every time
Honestly, no one is really sure why or how he’s here, but it’s too late for them to kick him out, seeing as it’s already his turn
Besides, he’s been well-behaved the entire time and hasn’t caused any trouble
Tyki was originally hoping for the bottle to land on Lenalee, but as soon as he saw you, that all changed
He was certainly intrigued when you entered the room for the first time that night
Who were you? Why were you here? And why had he never seen you before?
He didn’t know and he didn’t like that
It was now his goal to find the answers to his questions, reaching his ears in-between moans and gasps from you as you writhed underneath his body, preferably
Tyki smirked to himself before giving the bottle a twirl
The tension in the room grew to an uncomfortable, suffocating level that was thick enough to cut with a knife
His devilish grin and the sadistic gleam in his eyes would only grow as it landed on you, the object of his desire
Before you, or the others, could protest, he pulled you into his lap
His fingers would tangle in your hair, tugging roughly before locking his lips with your own
As you moaned into the kiss, his other hand would find your hip, his fingers digging into the soft, tender flesh
You could hear some of your friends growl or scoff in disgust, causing Tyki to smirk in response
Before things could go on for much longer, Lavi would rip you from his lap, promptly glaring at the Noah as he did so
Lavi would ask if you were okay as he sat you down between him and Allen but you would be in too much of a daze to answer
As the game came to a close, the others would try to drag you away from him, but you were so intrigued, desperate to know what would happen if you went with him for the night
Or perhaps, the rest of your life
His gaze would linger on yours, prompting you to follow him to some secluded location, where he’d immediately pin you to the wall
He would normally take what he wanted, no matter the circumstances but he didn’t want the others to hear what cute noises you had to make
The rest of the night was very eventful for you
Omg okay time for my fave
I know I have Lavi headcannoned as being kinda cocky and confident but I feel like if he hasn’t confessed to his crush at this point, then he’s actually a bit nervous
It’s more antsy, he can’t sit still, he’s grinning and blushing like an idiot
But of course, you’re oblivious too, why wouldn’t you be?
There’s no way THE Lavi could like you... is there?
He’s always so flirty with every girl he encounters, you feel like you don’t stand a chance
The truth is, he flirts with them because he wants to get over his feelings for you because wow you are way too perfect for him, an angel, a goddess, not of this world
So, when you spin the bottle and it lands on him? He feels his little heart thumping in his chest in anticipation
But the moment he sees the happiness on your face, all of that disappears
The both of you jump up nearly in sync for the kiss, much to each of your embarrassment
It’s honestly really cute and sweet though
He’s really worried to touch you in a way that would make you uncomfortable
For the rest of the game/night, he’ll have you sitting in his lap with his chin resting on the top of your head
After everything is done and over with, he’ll pull you to the side to talk about your relationship
Honestly, even though his feelings for you are very strong, he’ll try to discourage you from pursuing a relationship
The life of a Bookman is not a fun, nor easy one to live and he wants you to be 100% aware of that
Of course you’re already aware of that and, after some minor pleading, he’ll agree, only a little reluctantly
I had to save the best for last, didn’t I? Gotta tease ya since I know he’s your fave hehe
Okay, so, neither myself nor Kanda understands how he got into this situation
He just wants to be left alone and to sulk in his room, but Lenalee said something about needing his help
Kanda wasn’t in the mood to fight her on it, so he just agreed, but immediately regretted it
Somehow, the others forced him to stay, but he sulked and grumbled about how miserable he was the entire time
This made you really nervous because this is your big chance, thanks to practically everyone because the two of you are so fucking hopeless, and you were worried you were going to blow it
You held your breath as the bottle spun, coming to a rest on your figure
He sat there, not moving, as everyone watched expectantly
Kanda glanced at your figure before glaring at the others
Before he could leave though, someone pushed him into you, causing the two of you to lock lips
Both you and, surprisingly Kanda, were a blushing mess
That was something nobody had ever expected from the rather stoic male
He would huff and stomp away at that moment but would make sure to find you later that night when the two of you could be alone
Kanda would want to talk about his feelings and yours, even though that would be a massive undertaking in and of itself
Let's just say, everything worked out in the end

💍 + averey & lenalee o vo
@lunaetis / wedding meme send me 💍 + A SHIP and i’ll tell you—
where they get married
it takes place in a beautiful garden near where they first met; averey was surprisingly stubborn about that because, in his words, “where they met is where his life started” and honestly lenalee probably won’t say no to that logic (plus he probably used the puppy dog eyes, he’s not above that)
when they get married ( ie what time of day, what month and season etc. )
it’s late spring, early evening some day in mid-april, to be exact, where the trees bloom & the flowers slowly come out of their slumber. it wasn’t planned like that, per-se, but things happen and sometimes the most beautiful things take place at unexpected times.
what traditions they include ( do they get married under a chuppah and crush a glass, garter toss, ‘something borrowed, something blue,’ etc. )
i’m honestly unsure about this because i feel like while they probably would include some traditions it wouldn’t be as big a deal as for other people; maybe they both drink wine from goblets tied together with red string or, and he’s only doing it very lowkey because he’s embarrassed but where averey is from there’s the tradition of carving wooden spoons for your loved one and decorating them with things like key insignia ( to signify they have the key to your heart ) so maybe that plays a part? i’m honestly stumped with this one otherwise because i can promise you even after looking up wedding traditions i have absolutely no idea about wedding traditions :’)
or there’s the whole “testing the groom” thing kamui might’ve been involved with planning
what their wedding cake looks like
it is either incredibly cute or absolutely extravagant and even now i’m not sure if it’s a 50/50 decision vote like most things are with them or if they just play rock-paper-scissors to settle which one to go for. though if avereys “boss” gets to have a say it’s literally the most over-the-top cake and i’m screaming and laughing over this one
….who smashes cake into whose face
i want to say lenalee smashes cake into avereys cake but honestly i’m 100% convinced averey accidentally smashes cake into his own face in a moment of inattentiveness.
who proposed to who first
OKAY SO. THERE’S TWO SCENARIOS I CAN SEE.
they both did at the same time actually because it was kind of a “you know if i could i’d marry you right now” -”i’m not stopping you” situation that ended with “so we’re getting married?” but in like, during a picnic or something and it sounds a lot less cute than it was because trust me it was cute and wholesome. either that or one of them prepared to propose to the other, the other found the ring and then proposed first in a classic uno reverse card move.
or it was averey but only because he asked lenalee if it was okay and she was just so confused and like “yeS?” and then it happened and turns out this dumb nerd had everything prepared already but was just nervous so it’s not even a surprise but he’d rather ask if it’s okay for him to ask then ask at a wrong time
who walks down the aisle and who waits at the altar ( or neither )
i want to say it’s the classic thing but i’m so sure averey insisted the walk down the aisle together just because he hates the traditional view most cultures have on the bride being “given away” into another mans care so he just was as stubborn as a mule about walking with her
what their wedding dresses / suits / other look like
can i say wildcard for this one because i actually have no idea. i thought about it for thirty minutes now and i literally have no clue other than given that avereys birthplace doesn’t even really do weddings he’d just stress so much about what to wear he’d probably be annoying a little bit before he just kinda settles on “i’m going to ask the fanciest people i know but at the same time i am ready to cry how to fashion....”
what their wedding colour scheme is and what sort of decor they have
it’s definitely a more red & gold theme; the decor is perhaps one of the most traditional things & once again i am not sure what else to say other than they kept it classy but also very eye-catching??? idk
what flowers are in the bouquet ( if applicable. bonus: what do the flowers mean? )
okay so to start off it’s not in the bouquet but averey has a sprig of thyme in his pocket for “good luck”, there’s probably red peonys in there, perhaps some pink roses, DEFINITELY at least one white carnation, and a pink hydrangea.
the red peonys stand for love, passion, honor and respect. the pink roses symbolize gratitude, grace & joy, white carnations symbolize purity, good luck & in wedding contexts pure love. pink hydrangeas symbolize heartfelt emotion. i’m not a florist, trust me.
what their vows are ( eg poetry, traditional, improvised etc. )
they’re actually improvised! i’d get the feeling at least one of the two had vows prepared but instead went spontaneous as soon as it came to saying them out loud. actually, i can see that happening with both of them i don’t know why.
if anyone’s late to the wedding
surprisingly enough, no. nobody would dare be late. they know better than that :)
who’s in the bridal parties / groomsmen / other
oh god here comes my absolute lack of knowledge with d. gray man characters AND the fact averey has literally like 2 people he hangs out with on the regular but i think in the bridal party there’d definitely be miranda? maybe kanda because i can see him refusing to be a groomsmen but they insisted he’d be involved. if this is a verse where the princess averey was serving is healthy & they finally get to be friends without one of them constantly under the threat of death then definitely her too!!
as for groomsmen there’s probably allen, lavi, a very grumpy kamui and one of the rookie knights from avereys training.
and yes i hope it shows i have no idea how weddings are??? structured???
what their bridal party / groomsmen / other are wearing
the bridal party wears a pastel shade of pink just because they def ain’t gonna wear white or red dresses and anything else would legit just clash with the color theme.
the groomsmen all wear a simple suit because honestly all of them made suggestions and it would’ve turned into a disaster because they’re tastes are so vastly different so eventually both lenalee and averey just were like “how about,,, we keep it,,,, simple,,,”
who gives speeches at the reception ( bonus: what do they say? recount a sweet memory or two between them? tell an embarrassing story? )
well i mean, honestly? i think they both give small welcoming speeches until the others get a turn and then its just kamui going, allen giving a speech, avereys rookie friend whom i decided is now called lynell and uhh, a few others probably want to have a god but honestly therE’S NO TIME......
who catches the bouquet( s )
i mean i want to say a serious answer but just for shits and giggles i’m gonna say kanda.
what their wedding photos are like ( are they sweet, with the couple holding hands or kissing or ~gazing into each others eyes~? are they silly, with a snapshot of the ‘cake-smash’ moment? or are they artistic, with one of them facing the sunset or holding their bouquets? )
okay so most of them are sweet and absolutely the cutest pictures ever but there’s definitely a picture of averey accidentally cake-smashing himself so....
what sort of food they have at the reception
it’s an 8 course banquet and honestly i don’t even know what exactly it’d entail i just know they went all out and if i dwell on this ask any longer i’ll be hungry i’m so sorry i just can’t do food asks past midnight i’ll turn into a gremlin
who cries first during the ceremony
can averey cry first if he’s been crying this whole time?
how wild their reception gets ( who dances the best, who gets drunk first, etc. )
it’s a tame kind of wild; there’s a dance off and definitely some drunken shenanigans but nobody goes absolutely crazy
what their rings are like
FINALLY MY FAVORITE THING I KNOW THINGS ABOUT. averey made them himself and he’s super proud and yes it took literal months but look at them,, he tried to keep them simple but elegant so they don’t get in the way of work, too. i’m crying.
what sort of favours they have ( heart shaped sparklers, mini champagne bottles, personalised candy etc. )
uH,,, UHHHHHHHHHHHH, personalised candy probably but also most definitely mini champagne bottles if just because it fit with the theme or something---
where they go for their honeymoon
they actually travel for a while! they couldn’t decide where exactly to go so instead they just decided to pick the places they wanted to see the most and then travel there for a bit
something memorable that happens during the party / ceremony ( do they run out of ice and someone goes to get it in full formal wear on foot, does anyone fall asleep in the middle of the party, etc. )
averey not only accidentally cake smashes himself he also manages to accidentally use the cake leftovers on his hand like hairgel because he was careless and ran said hand through his hair
THEY DID manage to get it out for the most part though so it’s all good---
who officiates the ceremony
can i pick wildcard again because other than the classic “a priest” i don’t actually have anything in mind other than perhaps the bishop that took averey under his wing to help him with his curse a short time before averey and lenalee met??
what song their first dance is to
OKAY SO I THOUGHT ABOUT THIS ONE SUPER LONG but i honestly think it’d be to “for the dancing & the dreaming” if just because it’s super cute and also they’d probably sing along thank you for coming to my ted talk
who gives who away as they walk down the aisle
i mean given that they walk the aisle down together i don’t think anyone gives anyone away but if it came down to it you already know the answer
#lunaetis#you can tell how tired i got because i literally ended up writing the last five questions or so while I WAS DEAD#anyways i hate this but i tRIED#i know NOTHING. NADA. ZIP. about weddings#FJDFLKGJKDFFGJDKFDG the truth come out i live under a rock#bUT YEAH I TRIED TO MAKE IT WHOLESOME AND CUTE OK#but yeah the cake smash thing def happened because averey was so nervous he just kind of accidentally did that:tm:#* ALL OF THIS SORROW WON’T FIT IN MY CHEST ( reply )

Tell me about your Yullen thoughts [my apologies if I'm making you work a bit, but I couldn't resist to ask. I NEED to know what you think about this relationship.].
Oh god sure I can!!! I’ve never been good at analyzing though so this is kinda like a mix from what I’ve gathered from the manga with a lot of my emotions for these two ( T ^ T) also, I’m so sorry it took me so long to answer this ask, I just couldn’t find the way to answer this without it being messy and it’s still messy I’m ksdhfhlfk
For me, these two hold the best relationship development in the manga and I love how different they are and yet how well they can complement each other???
At the beginning it’s kinda obvious why they dislike each other so much, I mean, Allen’s the complete opposite of Kanda, even more so back then than now, with how attached/devoted Allen was to The Order, and I’m saying “was” because I think back then Allen truly wanted to believe in the ways the Order worked. Meanwhile, Kanda did his job, but was never truly devoted to it, so naturally they’d clash. And I’ve always found curious how Hoshino decided to join these two in the very first mission (if I remember correctly...) and what I really really love are their interactions here!! How well they were built to show how different they are!!
My personal favorites are that one scene where after Allen gets punched by Kanda, he says he had something important to him and that he lost it long ago, and if I remember correctly this happened after Lala asked to stay till the end with Guzol and then Allen refused to kill Lala to let them achieve this. And the other scene is where Kanda stops the akuma attack, telling Allen he hates those like him, and even more those who won’t fulfill their promises. And this here !!!!! is why I think Kanda remembered this place for so long and why he asked Allen to send him there with Alma, which leds me to another point!!
And that is, Kanda calling Allen by his name for the first time!! I think we all know that scene and I always thought that was something more than Kanda thanking him or something. I think it’s in that point where Kanda really acknowledges Allen as, well, Allen Walker rather than just another exorcist. And there’s no better scene for that tbh!!!! We see Allen going against the Order, putting the Noah aside, his own well-being, and even completely throwing out the window the fact that Kanda had just stabbed him, to give them their peace! Those few chapter were literally about Allen protecting Alma from Kanda, and vice versa because he knew that’s not how they’d want to end that, he specially knew what Kanda needed to properly free himself from everything that happened with Alma, and he did so while ensuring their safety!!
And then we have Kanda coming back!!! To the one place he hated the most to help Allen!!! And tbh his famous quote of “This regret simply won’t let me die peacefully” confused me for a while even after he said it was because when he noticed Neah appearing he never said anything, because I thought there was more to it. I think what made him regret not saying anything was because then he set Neah free in front of everyone while he was out of his mind. Considering Kanda came back after months, he must’ve thought about what his actions would entail for Allen, and let’s be honest, taking in consideration the efforts the Order was putting to find Allen, Kanda must’ve heard at some point that he had managed to escape. Which then made him come back, and now he’s helping Allen the same way Allen helped him, to find his answers and freedom.
And talking generally, I think these two help each other vent out! Allen’s the first person to not back down with Kanda’s attitude, and Kanda’s the one Allen has shown most of himself with (being sassy, giving him nicknames, being sarcastic, etc.). And I love with my heart and soul the way Hoshino has kept that into their relationship while they grow. They help each other while bickering, keep using their nicknames but we all know they hold no real insult anymore, and they keep insulting each other in such a sarcastic way it just doesn’t seem rude anymore. I mean, we have these dorks fighting over whose’s hair would sell better after Kanda threatened to cut Allen’s. That one scene with Kanda’s “Beansprout senses”??? Iconic. He didn’t even see Allen’s face he was just like “I want to slice this clown” and went for it. Kanda not answering Allen and Allen just “the conversation ball Kanda!!!!! catch the conversatION BALL!!!! :D”. Kanda holding onto Allen’s ankle while being transported god knows where and sTILL bickering while they’re being shocked to death withOUT letting go of Allen’s damn ankle. Both dorks being all “open the door beansprout!!” “I can’t!!” “then force it open or sometHING!!” “I’m telling you it can’t be dONE BAKANDA!!!”. And then Allen looking haunted and :))) while he just “you see there’s this idiot saying he will help me by killing me so I can’t leave cAN I???”
I just...I love these two so fuckin much and I think I didn’t even explain anything with this I’m so sorry. I simply think they have such a great dynamic and I feel like they’ve reached that point where they can lean on each other for help (even if they won’t admit it) and I hope Hoshino keeps that up, the way they’ve grown together while remaining themselves. And I really, really hope they both remain alive by the end of the manga ;-;
#imm0rxlist#DGM#Yullen#thank u so much for the ask !!!! and I'm so sorry my thoughts are all over the place ;-;#I love talking about these two so I really enjoyed answering this even if it's so mESSY LSFHSLDFH#I'd sell my soul for them to stay alive till the end#Mad asks

Could I request some headcanons on Neah, Allen and Kanda being in a relationship with a mute s/o.
I kinda based mute s/o’s behaviour with my mute friends’ behaviour so I hope I didn’t portray this weirdly or anything!!! DD: That being said, I hope you enjoy this one nonny!!! qqq w qqq it was fun to write for hehe~
Allen
* He was drawn to you the moment he sees you teaching Lenalee some basic sign language; he’d come over without him realizing it and suddenly he’s learning along with Lenalee?? Okay-
* He’s always mesmerized when you talk to Lavi or Jerry, both of them a pro at sign language and the rapid movement of your hands makes him amused even though he doesn’t catch everything that’s being said
* He doesn’t realize when he’s fallen in love – but it hits him like a bucket of cold water when he wakes up one day, sad to realize that you’re still on a mission somewhere and wouldn’t be back for another month.
* he legit thinks he’s going insane for?? Missing you??? and the moment you return, he just throws himself into your arms and sighed contently as you awkwardly pat his back.
* he’s been learning more of signing when you were away – though you’d always tell him there was no need because you can listen just fine – so when you returned, Allen apologizes first because “I know this is weird” and then proceeds to sign “I love you”
* Probably thinks he did something wrong when he sees you crying LMAO POOR CHILD
* Allen would never say it, but he finds it really cute when your face scrunches up a certain way in response to what someone said/signed to you
* also you guys talk smack about Cross (and generally anybody else you find irritable) right in front of his face using sign language; Cross is, understandably, irritated that he can’t understand a single thing LMAO
Neah
* Neah knew who you were – or rather, he’d seen you around with his brother. You were quiet; much like his brother was, so he didn’t really think anything of it.
* Besides, he often caught the two of you doing small, relaxation things that usually came with being quiet so he never really minded?
* So when you came around while his brother was out, Neah just sorta lead you to the living room and offered some pie their mother had made as a snack – while you waited, yknow?
* you smiled, thanking him in sign language (out of habit) but holy shit my guy- I apologize for his dumbassery because he didn’t understand what it was and later that night he whined to his brother about how you didn’t even give him a thank you for the pie-
* “Did they do anything when you gave them the pie?” “yeah, they did this thing where they touched their chin idek man-“ “tHAT WAS A THANK YOU, YOU DUMBASS!!! ____’S MUTE!!!”
* Neah just straight up turned into the :O Pikachu meme god please bless his one (1) braincell fdsbghfjsdhjgs-
* Unlike Allen or Kanda, Neah doesn’t really go out of his way to use SL to communicate- he knows you can hear him fine so he just talks a lot
* but he does learn it to better understand what you’re telling him (and also so that you wouldn’t have to write so much hhh your poor hands-)
* every time he meets you, he’ll eagerly show off something new he learned from his brother since the last time you met – beaming happily when you tell him its correct
* Sometimes, he’ll watch your hands when you “talk” to his brother, the latter having an almost perfect knowledge of SL, allowing you to sign to him most of the time. When he catches a word that he’s never seen before, he’ll quietly tap you on your shoulder and clumsily replicate the movements, asking what it meant.
* He’s just,,, a really good and clumsy student it warms my heart thinking of him trying to learn SL aaaaAAAAAAAA
* That being said, Neah is extremely protective of you when he sees people insulting you for being mute and he’s always ready to throw down if he needs to.
Kanda
* for all his grumpy behaviour, Kanda can actually read people quite well ( he just doesn’t do it because he doesn’t want to )
* He’s notices that he’s never heard you speak – but perhaps he was just preoccupied or something. He doesn’t really realize you’re mute until he sees you angrily signing at a laughing Lavi – the usagi doubling over with laughter as you puffed your cheeks
* that was probably the moment he realizes “oh shit I love them????” because in the next second, he finds himself towering over Lavi and asking what the hell was so funny
* Sometimes he gets too flustered to look you in the eye – so that you can lip-read easier (even tho he knows you can hear him) – and he just ends up covering his face because it’s too much fhbsdghfjsdg-
* He absolutely adores when you make little sounds unintentionally while “speaking” to someone and the laughter that slips from your lips when people say something amusing
* Kanda, this dumbass, probably knows a couple of things in sign language but he rarely uses it because he feels so clumsy with his hands (it also doesn’t help that you laugh at his mess ups because you find it cute; the man’s heart is weak!!! Leave him alone!!!)
* He likes to have some sort of physical contact with you – whether it be hand-holding, touching your elbow, wrapping an arm around your waist etc; he says its to keep you safe but honestly, the man’s afraid he’s gonna lose you (especially in a crowd)

amelioration in yours truly
18-19th: Amelioration » The act of relieving ills and changing for the better
AO3
The words that he had left never told to others, he wonders how, of all people, Kanda Yuu managed to spill forth from him.
He kept persisting, kept chasing, no matter how much Allen pushed him away, and when the words started to come out, they just kept pouring out like water out of a fissure from an already fragile and cracked vase.
He supposed he just never really had the opportunity. Nobody really sat down and really took the time to ask him; he’d never had the time to explain. His entire life, he spent running forward in one long, breathless sprint, never really having a moment to rest.
So naturally, he had been shocked beyond belief that Kanda Yuu, again, of all people, found the patience to do this with him.
Why?
And how?
He had a million questions. There was no way this had been the same Kanda Yuu he knew, right?
The way he had opened himself up to listen. It took Allen a second to realize he had still been holding in his breath. Even the way the man sat at his side was unbelievably elegant, giving him a look of inquisitiveness he had never seen on the other’s face.
When had he changed like this?
What made him change?
He opened his mouth to speak.
––—∞—––
The pain in his voice was audible in the pauses between memories and in the silence left behind, but this wasn’t something Kanda wasn’t already familiar with.
Past wounds and scars. Allen’s past was riddled with uncertainties, and he had to live with the dissatisfaction of not having many answers.
Allen thought it had been a miracle that Kanda didn’t simply say “Okay, enough,” or stomp off, or act like he stopped listening. He had reacted, and he had scowled and sometimes said “Idiot,” while scoffing while they bickered very briefly, but they stayed on topic until Allen was finished.
After it all, he heard a breath of exasperation. Allen almost chuckled and laughed, just a tiny breath out his nose, as he combed his hair out of his eyes with his hand, and looked upon Kanda with a fondness he didn’t even notice he had shown.
“Shit doesn’t add up,” Kanda said.
And from there, the idiots talked it over as much as the idiots could and knew how.
But at least they knew in which direction to go from there.
Towards this mysterious manor in Allen’s memories, Kanda stepped towards, and Allen smiled and followed behind in step.
“Thank you, Kanda.”
“Don’t mention it. I mean it.”
Allen laughed.
“…Ah.” Kanda remembered.
“Hm?”
“I just… remembered what I told Tiedoll.”
––—∞—––
“I mean, it’s not really all that unbelievable,” Johnny said at the bar.
“But you were listening! He just sat there! And talked to me! Properly! He hated me, remember? I mean, I think he still really dislikes me, but…” Allen trailed off as he took another sip of his drink, milk seeping onto his tongue with the pleasant mixed bitter taste of coffee.
“You should have seen him as we were looking for you. One time when he was drunk, he had been ranting off about all the things he would do to you when he found you.” Johnny propped up his coke bottle glasses. “Oh, like how he would pin you down and make you explain yourself, or how dare you do all that for him and then be such a pain to track down. Or how…” Johnny continued to explain how Kanda would do this and that.
It was super embarrassing, and Allen couldn’t help but blush a little at the wording, as he thought ‘It’s nothing,’ and didn’t read into it.
“And then the next morning, he said, ‘How dare that beansprout give me this hangover.’”
Allen lightly slammed the counter and exclaimed with reddish cheeks, “How is that my fault!”
“My point is, I think he cares a lot,” Johnny claimed making a sign like ‘Eureka!’ with his hand.
“Since… when…” Allen asked, covering his face with one hand.
Johnny shrugged, deciding not to bring up moments in the past where he and others in the Science Department decided not to say anything.
“But I’m glad you guys had a proper talk with each other. Maybe the General said something, but after that… I feel like he had grown up a bit.” Johnny took another swig of his beer and took another bite of his burger. Swallowing, he said, the look in his eyes calmer and more serious, “Ever since he came back, he also surprised me with how much he changed! It’s like he’s walking around now free of the burden of what happened back in the East Asia branch.”
“…”
“In fact, let me tell you what he said when I asked him why he came back…”
––—∞—––
“Yuu-kun, I know you’re anxious to meet up again with the Walker boy, but he will be okay on his own,” Tiedoll consoled.
“For the last time, I’m not sad I couldn’t go with him!” Kanda yelled.
About ten metres away, Marie looked up at the shout and answered it with a silent look. Even he didn’t believe Kanda.
“I’m fucking serious!” Kanda exclaimed. Then he let out a loud breath of complaint. “I’m going to seek different answers on my own. We’ll meet up on the same path. It’s just more fucking efficient this way.”
“Mhmm.”
“Stop looking at me like that,” Kanda demanded irritably.
Tiedoll simply smiled.
“You two spoke, didn’t you?” Tiedoll asked fondly.
“So what?”
“I’m proud.”
Kanda was confused at that response.
“You two are learning how to communicate with each other instead of simply arguing, my boy. That’s a step in the right direction. You’re growing into an adult.”
Kanda let out a ‘tch—’ sound through gritted teeth. “I’m already an adult!” eventually retorted, to which Tiedoll only patted him on the shoulders as if he were still fourteen.
After all, none of them had the chance to live normal lives between all the battles and missions they were assigned. While it was true they had handled horrors beyond those of adults, it had only been natural some skills would have been more stunted than others.
Tiedoll had been unable to levy such heavy chains and burdens from the young man’s back. Such chains he had locked up on his past, Kanda stubbornly refusing to budge, reflect, or remember.
The anger tore at the edges of his mind, and hatred made his soul heavy.
The reunion with Alma…
In the end, Tiedoll was simply immensely glad Kanda was finally freed from those chains.
He was thankful to Allen Walker.
Hearing his dear disciple’s continued mutters, he grinned again as he wondered what there was here between these two boys. Much had changed, from the impression he had, and he had never seen his disciple act this way with another.
“What is it, General?” Marie had asked.
“Nothing. Just mulling over our dear Yuu-kun’s spring of youth.”
Marie had a question on his face. “Is this about Allen?”
“Ah, so it’s not just me.”
––—∞—––
Sometimes, Allen would feel Kanda’s absence. It was pronounced.
More pronounced than he anticipated.
Something was building. He wasn’t sure what. He huffed the cold into his hands, looking up at the sky.
It would be okay, they were all heading towards the same goal and direction.
It was difficult for Allen to not settle into what he had accepted would be his natural state of being alone. He feels it, consciously. He can tell himself that he isn’t, but it’s difficult making himself believe it.
He grew up in solitude for much of his childhood when he wasn’t by Mana’s side, after all. And General Cross was certainly family in a way to him, but he certainly didn’t know how to raise a child. In that respect, he can’t say Cross made him feel less lonely.
And now even Cross was gone.
But his family in the Order, Lenalee, Komui, Reever and the others in the Science Department… Miranda, Marie, all of them, would be on the other side.
Sometimes when he has time to breathe, he would worry about Lavi, too. He had no idea where he was or if he was okay, he can only pray the Bookman foresaw such a situation and they were simply secretly and safely tucked away.
He heard a step, and Link was walking up to him along with Johnny. Kanda had already revealed to Allen that Link was alive. He ignored Link with an exaggerated snub, still pissed at him for letting him think he was dead. Link sighed, but smiled as Allen looked away as he remembered how Allen had initially reacted.
Johnny tapped his shoulder with a bright smile, and a gentle warmth welled up within him with his companions at his side and his comrades connected to him by the sky.
Johnny was his constant reminder of “You’re not alone, you’re not alone.” He wouldn’t dare let Allen forget it.
To say that things were difficult were an understatement.
Allen was determined not to disappear. Even so… Even so, fear crept in his shadow. It was simply natural. Tragedy pervaded his life and he didn’t want to lose anyone else. But he never wanted to stop caring, either.
At least he was glad that Link was alive, but his worries were endless.
And he wasn’t at his side. He wasn’t sure if he felt less or more safe without Kanda. On one hand, he wouldn’t hurt Kanda. On the other, Kanda was reliable and…
‘Huh?’ Allen caught himself thinking that, shaking his had and trying to stop wanting for it, wondering why he did.
Link raised his eyebrows as he observed Walker looking into the distance again, and then shaking it off, and then doing it again later throughout the day.
––—∞—––
“Are you stupid?” Lavi asked.
Surprisingly, on their journey, Lavi had turned up out of nowhere with memories missing and he had no idea how he had turned up there. Link had been heavily suspicious to the point where even Lavi didn’t trust himself.
Allen saw Link’s point, but at the very least, at least Lavi was safe. Allen’s first instinct was to run, but he couldn’t make the same mistake again. Kanda would march right back and flay him if he did after the scolding he gave him.
(Or maybe it would be fine if he did.)
(Maybe they would let Kanda come back now.)
“What?” Allen asked indignantly.
“You explained all that, and you still can’t figure out why he changed?” Lavi asked with his arms folded behind his head.
“I mean. I can understand that I helped him back during the incident with Alma, but…” Allen said as he had his hands on his nose.
“I think you know, you just want someone to reaffirm it to you.”
“…” Allen couldn’t deny it.
“It’s because of you. There, I said it.”
Allen muttered a quiet thanks.
“Wow, I still can’t believe you’re talking about the same guy. Yuu? Really? You actually managed to pull the stick out of his ass? That is so impressive! I mean. Wow, I don’t even know where to begin. He sounds like… well.”
“Hn?”
“Well, this is going to sound ridiculous, but if it really was like as you say it was, he sounds like he likes you.”
“What???” Allen asked in utter disbelief.
“Hey, listen. Don’t shoot the messenger.” Lavi put up his hands.
Allen only sputtered. He chose to believe that what Lavi meant was what he thought was more likely. “I don’t know. I don’t know if we can become friends now.”
“You know what I mean.”
Allen opened his mouth, and then blushed. “It’s definitely not like that.”
“Uhuh. Also, you told him everything, but not the rest of us?”
“I… He just asked.”
“He influenced you too. He got you to open up,” Lavi pointed out. “Tell us later too.”
Allen nodded after a moment. “Of course.”
Lavi then chattered and then continued to ask for more gossip with the Order, and asking for more information about the others, and if anyone else would know anything about where the old man was.
––—∞—––
The sky continued to change.
As Kanda looked up above, remembers the same sky he saw back then, when he first broke through to the surface.
He wondered what Allen’s side is doing. His hands grasped the first key, and he made his way back to find him again.
Under those changing clouds from far away, the light flickered in silver eyes to and back from gold.
Kanda refused to get there too late.
He chased the unending sky.

DGM Rarepair Week 2k19!
Art by the awesome @warie-lym! Scene from my Kanda/Link slow burn WIP. Which of course would have some drinking shenanigans XD. Fandom could always have more glowingdrunk!Kanda and loldrunk!Link.
“ ‘S not right, your hair.” Kanda muttered.
Link raised an eyebrow. “Why’s that?”
“Your hair’s pretty,” said Kanda. “But you’re ugly.”
“Huh. Blond hair.” Kanda tugged on Link’s braid, tuft at the end. Like a tail.
“Yes, my hair is blond,” Link replied, overly patient.
“ ‘S not right, your hair,” he muttered.
Link raised an eyebrow. “Why’s that?”
“Your hair’s pretty,” said Kanda. “But you’re ugly.”
Blunt as a door in the face. This had been a common theme lately. Kanda was becoming fast acquainted with alcohol’s buzz at each bar. He didn’t talk constantly, but the things he fixated on became *very important*.
Like Link’s hair.
Link sighed. “Really, Kanda?”
“Yeah,” said Kanda, smug. “You being ugly saves me a headache from those drunk dumbasses.”
Link glared over his drink to the slowly growing, disheveled onlookers in matching grays and some kind of red oval insigna? He matched their gazes from across several tables, with many scowling back. “Not all of them, apparently.”
Kanda shrugged. “They’re leaving us alone. Good enough.” Something about his steel dark eyes didn’t square quite right with his words, Link noted. Not the way he was scanning Link from head to toe. That being left alone with Kanda would be entirely…different.
“Real shame about your hair though,” continued Kanda.
Link fought the urge to roll his eyes at Kanda’s perpetual peeve. “And what about it?”
“ ‘S not right to have pretty hair…”
Sitting at the bar, always a hair apart from Johnny and Kanda, Link looked down his whiskey yet again. Was their slight distance from him on purpose? Remembering Johnny’s shaking words when he swore he would protect Allen from Link binding him again. Kanda’s narrow glare at the back of Link’s neck everywhere they traveled. Central had let Johnny go, was tolerating Kanda’s defection in all but name AGAIN…because Link was there.
Link swirled the whiskey in the glass.
He was Johnny’s watchdog right now. Made so by the blessing of the mysterious Cardinal in the red suit, no less. Of course they couldn’t trust him. He wouldn’t trust himself if he had been in their position.
More than ever, Link stood alone.
But so long as they could find Walker, keep him from succumbing to the Noah? If anyone could save Allen Walker from the Fourteenth, he knew, it would be Johnny–sweating bullets when he promised he’d protect Walker from Link. It would be Kanda–apparently giving Death itself the finger to find him again.
Link opened his mouth to argue…and shrugged. “Actually? I’m fine with being ugly.”
His smirk felt so pasted on it made his cheeks cringe, like he’d bitten a lemon. It also made Kanda choke on his tequila and caused a horrendous troll face. So. A small victory.
“You are?” Kanda put his glass down, suspicious. “Can’t even come up with an argument?”
Link nodded. “I’ll be the ugly one. Because that makes you the pretty one.”
“No it doesn’t,“ Kanda snorted.
“Actually, it does. Beauty and ugliness are subjective.” Link leaned in, having caught a thread of *something* and not letting it go. “How do you know something is ugly? Pretty? You have to compare.”
“Huh? You’re just pulling shit out of your ass.”
Behind Kanda’s shoulder, Johnny popped his head up immediately. The verbal knives being drawn was music to the ears of every Science Division member. “Wait Kanda! Some concepts can only be illustrated by their polar opposite.” His pink beaming smile seemed to make Kanda hesitate–poor drinkmanship to smack someone not arguing with you, Link supposed.
”…Whatever.“ Kanda sulked over his glass.
Johnny waved at Link. “Proceed, Inspector!”
Link snorted out loud before he could stop himself. Well…He shook his head, taking the plunge. “Tell me, how do you know left from right?”
“Um. One hand here, and–”
“Up from down? Hard and soft?”
Despite himself, Kanda tried to keep up, uncertain as Link plowed on.
“Short and tall? Spicy and bland? Black and white–?”
“Fine, fuck. Slow down!”
“At it’s most basic, you need a duality. It’s–It’s a rule.” Link’s hands traced his thoughts in the air. “Take fairy tales. It’s always a pair. Honest hero, cunning villain. Kind princess, evil stepmother. The ugly sister,” Link fluffed his bangs away from his forehead, then made a much grander wave to a skeptical Kanda, “the pretty sister.”
“Oh fuck you.” Kanda looked like he was beginning to regret starting this conversation.
[*Finally* muttered a voice in the back of Link’s head…]
“How. Will they know,” Link finished, tapping his shot glass, “that I’m ugly, if they don’t see how pretty you are?”
“I get it, ugh.”
A little giggle came from the other side of Kanda. Johnny peeled his face from the countertop, a napkin stuck to his cheek. “I have listened as a scientist, and the Inspector has defended his views. Rather successfully.”
“Don’t help him.”
Link leaned his chin on his hand. His eyes relaxed, half-lidded, and the smallest smile at the corners of his mouth. If it took Link being ugly to take the edge off Kanda’s fear of losing Walker, then that was fine. He’ll be their scapegoat for their fear, anxiety, anger.
“Go ahead.” There was only a little catch in his chest, “tell me I’m ugly. You’ll just prove me right.”
“Tch.” Kanda crossed his arms, which made Link savor his rare victory. He even managed to hold his tongue on telling Kanda he was damned beautiful when he was pissed.
A meaty hand settled between Johnny and Kanda. An even more solid body wedged itself into Johnny’s slace, blocking Kanda in with Link. “Finally,” said its owner, a blubbery mountain of a man.
–
In physics, it was a controversial idea that one action in time could split the course of the universe from one path into divergent paths. Johnny would remember this moment as the one that led to the changes between Link and Kanda, for worst, and possibly, for better. But first it got worse. Definitely worse.

A Ghosts Home
Fandom: D.Gray man
Pairing: N/A
Characters: Lenalee Lee, Allen Walker, Kanda Yu, Lavi
Sumamry: Stuck out in the rain, the small group has no choice but to hunker down in an abandoned church and wait for the weather to pass. What better way to pass the time than telling ghost stories?
[Read on AO3]
This is my secret Santa gift for @your-local-cryptic! I hope you enjoy it :) And thank you to @dgmsecretsanta2k19 for hosting this year! Happy Holidays everyone!
The rain fell heavily over the four travelers, their hair and clothes plastered to their bodies. They stood in front of a grand building, the structure large and imposing in the dismal weather. Once, it would have been a gorgeous building; the enormous stained-glass windows would’ve once been awe-inspiring, but now, they were nothing but shattered glass. The tall spires were nothing more than rubble along the ground.
The small group made their way into the abandoned building with care, skirting around the fallen pieces of the life-like statues above the dilapidated door. Once inside they looked around the vast area. Part of the roof had collapsed, a large hole letting in the heavy rain. Other parts of the roof looked like they would fall apart at any second, the large pillars holding it up nothing more than pieces on the ground.
But it had walls that would protect them from the wind, and some of the roof looked strong enough for them to camp out under.
“Well,” Allen said, brushing his wet hair out of his eyes, “At least it’s better than nothing.”
Kanda snorted in disbelief, his dark eyes rolling at Allen’s optimistic words. Allen’s scathing reply was cut off at the sound of Lavi’s off-handed comment.
“Ya know, I heard that this building is haunted.”
Allen tensed at Lavi’s words. Lenalee’s scolding ‘Lavi!” almost drowned out Kanda’s growl.
“Hey! I’m not saying that it’s true! I just heard someone at the inn talking about it!” Lavi held his hands up in a surrender motion. “Besides, it’s not like we have much of a choice. The train we were going to take broke down, and the inn was booked to the max because of this storm.”
“That’s true…but if something does go wrong, we are quite far from the village.” Lenalee said, tone worried.
“Yep! Almost a mile!” Lavi’s too-happy voice chimed in. Kanda snorted again, brushing past the others and walking up to the remains of the pews.
“Look, there’s no such thing as ghosts. Now, will one of you help me use some of this broken shit to make a fire? I don’t k now about the rest of you, but I’m not about to willingly freeze to death.”
Kanda’s gruff voice echoed slightly in the large space. Lenalee nodded, and setting her luggage down on the ground, set about helping Kanda build a fire.
“Well, looks like you two got this, so I’m going to go explore!” Lavi said, throwing his own luggage to the ground.
“I hope something collapses and crushes you.” Kanda’s dry words followed Lavi.
Lavi just laughed in response, picking his way gingerly through the rubble. After a quick mental debate on whether to stay and help or follow Lavi, Allen choose to go with Lavi, not wanting to spend any time with Kanda while the long-haired man was in such a foul mood.
----
Once Lavi had decided he had enough of wandering through the abandoned building, he and Allen made their way back to the other two. Seeing a small, but earnest fire going, Allen happily sat down next to Lenalee, holding his hands out in front of the flame in the hopes of warming them up.
At Lavi’s loud return and exclamation of ‘Yuu-chan! Did ya miss me,’ a quiet sigh left the long-haired man, followed by a muttered ‘damn.’
Allen rolled his eyes at the surly males’ attitude; though, Allen couldn’t blame him. He wasn’t looking forward to having to spend the night in the cold, dismal building.
The cold, dismal, potentially haunted building.
“Ya know, this seems like the perfect time to tell ghost stories.” Lavi’s abrupt words cut through the silence. Kanda’s long-suffering sigh was the only sound for a moment until both Allen and Lenalee started to protest.
“Lavi, I don’t think-“
“Really? You want to tell-“
Lavi waved off the two’s polite, yet adamant words.
“C’mon, like Yuu-chan said,” Lavi started, ignoring the light growl thrown his way, ”There’s no such thing as ghosts!”
“Still, this doesn’t really seem like the best place to tell them...” Allen’s hesitant voice trailed off. His eyes flickered around the room, briefly settling on the broken statues. Unnerved by the statues intense gaze, Allen shifted closer to Lenalee. She sent a hesitant smile his way, which he returned.
“Here! I’ll start! Besides I know the perfect story to tell. It’s something I came across in a book a while back”
Lavi crossed his legs, shifting to get more comfortable.
“There was once a gentleman by the name of Felix, and one night, in a little village near the town of Dieppe, he tried to book a room at the local inn. However, it ended up being too full for him to rent a room.”
A grin spread across Lavi’s face as he spread his arms wide.
“Kind of like our situation!” Lavi exclaimed much too happily for the other three’s liking.
“Great.” Came Kanda’s monotone reply.
Ignoring the long-haired man, Lavi continued his story. His words were spoken in a soft, almost dreamy tone; a stark contrast to his usual loud whines and exclamations.
“The inn offered to take his luggage and hold it for him, which he accepted, and told him about a place he could stay. He agreed, and a worker at the inn led him to the place. He begrudgingly followed, rightfully annoyed at having to sleep at a strangers house.”
“Well, now this doesn’t seem all bad.” Allen said quietly.
“He arrives at the house, which looked innocent enough; small, two stories tall, and,” at this Lavi’s voice dropped, nothing but a harsh whisper. He leaned forward slightly, the light from the fire catching the edges of his face,” all alone on the outskirts of town.”
“Oh, never mind,” came Allen’s even quieter words. Lavi snickered at Allen, continuing on in that same soft, relaxed tone.
“After knocking on the door, a woman answered, and stepping inside, Felix wandered into the kitchen, seeing that it was empty. At that, he realized that the woman must be the only one living there. Seeing him standing there looking very confused, she explained that she was often letting people stay the night when the inn was full, and would make sure to give him a very comfy room.”
“He decided that it would be best to just go along with everything. After relaxing in front of the fire, Felix soon grew tired. The warm glow from the fire and the monotonous actions of the woman sewing lulling him to sleep. Seeing this, the woman showed him to his room that was on the first floor. When he saw his room, Felix was shocked at how small it was; the tiny area barely big enough for the bed, with a scant few inches on one side. He also noticed a window sitting at the head of the bed.”
“He thanked the woman, and quickly settled into bed. He fell asleep promptly, having been travelling all day, and was exhausted. He wasn’t sleep for long though, before he felt it.”
“Felt what?” Lenalee asked. She was hugging her knees, leaning against Allen, who was sitting crossed-legged, hands gripping his ankles. They both stared wide-eyed at Lavi, hanging on to his every word. Even Kanda was drawn in by the red-heads story, the Japanese man watching Lavi intently.
“A hand as cold as death.” Lavi whispered. A soft whimper escaped Allen and he tucked himself closer to Lenalee. Kanda’s eyes widened slightly, and he shifted, almost imperceptibly, towards Lenalee. Lavi caught the subtle movement, grinning to himself as he continued.
“It caressed his face, from forehead down to his chin. A hand so cold it was as if a corpse was stroking him. Then, he awoke, and startled, bolted upright.”
Lavi suddenly straightened, throwing his arms out in front of him.
“Who’s there?!” Lavi yelled, his startling loud voice echoing in the large space. A flash of lightening shot through the sky, lighting Lavi up from behind. Twin squeals rang through the air, Lavi looking at the pair clutching each other with a grin.
Lenalee was gripping Allen’s bicep, in what Lavi knew from experience was a painful grip. Her eyes were blown wide, and her mouth was set in a thin, trembling line. Allen had his knees pulled up to his chest, his hand clamped over his mouth and his cheeks bright red. Even Kanda looked startled, his shoulder pressing against Lenalee’s.
Lavi placed his hands on his knees, face suddenly deadly serious.
“But, no one answered him, since no one was there.”
Allen’s face went white, the hand covering his mouth moving to clutch at Lenalee’s arm.
“He got on his hands and knees, feeling around the room to see if anyone was there.” A mildly panicked look came over Lavi’s face as he threw his arms out in front of him, moving them around as if he was the one that was trapped in the tiny room. “He felt along all the walls but found nothing. No one was in the room except for him, but he knew that someone had touched him.”
“Now,” Lavi sat up straight, crossing his arms. His voice had changed from the soft, airy tone to a confidant, almost quizzical one.
“You may be wondering to yourself, ‘why didn’t dear ol’ Felix try to grab this supposed ghost hand?’”
Lenalee and Allen nodded eagerly. Some of the colour had retuned to Allen, but he was still much paler than his usual pallor.
“Well, when he got startled out of his sleep, he did try to make a grab for it, but it was already gone.”
“You’re making this up.”
Kanda’s gruff tone cut through the air.
“Didn’t you hear him earlier, Bakanda? He said he got it from a book.”
Kanda growled, about to throw a retort back when a loud ‘shh!’ stopped him. He looked at Lenalee who was glaring back at him. She continued to stare him down for a few more moments before he finally looked away with a click of his tongue.
Lenalee looked back to Lavi, her eyes wide.
“Continue, Lavi,”
With a snort of amusement Lavi continued on.
“Now, at this point dear Felix was very confused, and more than a little exhausted, so he wrote the hand off as a figment of his imagination; nothing more than a dream. He was still nervous about this hand, but he settled back into bed. But before he was completely asleep, he felt it again.”
“The hand.” Lenalee whispered, tone fearful.
“Who’s there! What are you?! Speak or begone!” Lavi shouted. The others had been expecting the sudden noise this time, but still they jumped.
“This time he jumped out of bed in a flurry, feeling all around the room, trying to find the owner of this hand. But, yet again, no one was there. So, he stood there, in that tiny room, thoroughly confused. His calming thoughts of dreams and imaginations didn’t work this time. This time, the hand was too real, it had skin and bones like a real hand, and moved like one too. Yet, it was the hand of a dead man; ice cold to the touch.”
“Now, his heart was racing, his mind trying to keep up. He tried to come up with a reason, some explanation for this ghost. But he couldn’t come up with anything. He didn’t believe in ghost’s, never had, but this experience, this made him believe.”
A whine of discomfort was heard from Allen, both his hands clutching tightly at Lenalee’s arm.
“There was no way it was an intruder,” Lavi continued, “There wasn’t enough time to go to the door and escape, even if it had been unlocked. Which he double-checked. There also was no fire place, so someone couldn’t be hiding in the chimney, and there wasn’t a closet either. It was just him, and a bed.”
“After scouring the room, making sure there was absolutely no one in there with him, he went back to bed, thinking up some reason for all of this ‘till his head hurt. But it was to no avail. Overcome with exhaustion, he fell back asleep, and slept ‘till morning with no more disturbances.”
“When he awoke, he told the hostess about the events of the previous night. She listened intently, asking a few questions here and there. After he was done recounting his night, she suggested that it might’ve been her drunken brother. At his insistence, she explained: Her brother has been living with her since the death of their parents, and he had a terrible habit of leaving for weeks at a time and not telling her about when he was leaving, or when he was coming back. Her brother had most likely come home the previous night, and not wanting to disturb her, stuck his hand through the window, to see if some one was sleeping in the bed. He was probably too drunk to notice any exclamations Felix had made. And, after finding the bed occupied, her brother most likely went off to find somewhere else to sleep.”
“Hearing this, Felix was satisfied with the woman’s explanation. He never found out whether or not the brother was there, because after breakfast, he packed up and headed out.”
“The end?” Allen questioned. Lavi nodded.
“The end.”
A soft exhalation of air left Allen as he let go of Lenalee, tense body relaxing.
“That wasn’t so bad.” Allen said, shooting a nervous smile to Lavi.
Lavi grinned back, leaning back on his hands.
“See? It’s like Yuu-chan said, ghosts don’t- “
A thudding sound made itself known over the rain, Lavi cutting himself off.
“What’s that noise?” Allen asked, a slight tremble in his voice.
“It’s probably an animal or something.” Kanda said, though he didn’t sound too confidant. His eyes were glued to the large, broken doors of the chapel. The small group followed his gaze, able to tell that the sound was coming from that direction. A small squeak was heard from Allen as the sound grew louder.
“Kanda’s probably right,” Lenalee said. She shifted, making it so that she could jump up at a moments notice and activate her innocence.
“I don’t think so…most animals would be hiding from this weather.” Lavi said.
The group sat there, tense, as they waited for what ever was making the noise to show itself.
“Wait, do you hear that?” Kanda suddenly spoke up. He was still staring at the door way, though his expression was now more confused than anything.
“Of course we can BaKanda! Who wouldn’t be able to hear that awful thudding noise?” Allen said, shooting a glare at Kanda.
Kanda finally took his eyes off the door, turning to level a glare at Allen.
“Not that ‘Sprout,” Kanda spat, “It sounds like a voice.”
Allen went wide-eyed at that, his face paling.
“What!” He squeaked out.
Lavi strained his ears, trying to hear what Kanda had. Eye widening in disbelief, Lavi realized that Kanda was right. There was what seemed to be the sound of someone shouting over the rain.
“Yuu-chan’s right! I can hear someone yelling!”
“Exorcists!”
“I think it’s someone from the village!” Lavi exclaimed.
True enough, a soft yellow glow shown outside the doors, gradually getting larger until it was in the doorway, illuminating the strangers face.
“There you guys are! I have some news for you!”
The group of four stared dumb-founded at the dripping wet stranger in the doorway. Lavi stared intently at the man, not able to place his face.
Stepping closer, the man grinned as he continued talking.
“I’ve been looking for you four everywhere. They managed to get the train back up and running! Something about debris being stuck in the wheels. I knew you guys wouldn’t want to miss it, so I went out looking for you.”
“In this weather?!” Allen asked, incredulously. The man scratched the back of his head, grinning sheepishly.
“You guys saved my life; it’s the least I can do.”
Lavi suddenly shot up, startling the others. Snapping his fingers, he pointed at the stranger.
“You where on the train with us! Your village was attacked and you where coming here to work with your sister and her husband at the inn!”
The man gaped at Lavi.
“Uh, yeah, that’s right. How did you remember that?”
Lavi grinned easily, brushing off the man’s comment.
“It’s what I do,”
The man continued to stare, even more confused with Lavi’s vague answer. Lenalee stood, brushing off her skirt, Allen and Kanda following her.
“Thank you so much for coming to find us, we really are grateful.” Lenalee said, smiling at the man.
“Like I said, it’s no problem. Here,” He held up a lantern, the candle inside glowing softly.
“This is for you guys. The trail back can get pretty bad.”
“Thank you,” Allen said, taking the lantern from the man.
“Now, let’s hurry, the train will be departing soon, and you folks won’t want to miss it.”
Collecting their luggage, and stamping out the fire, the group followed the man back out into the heavy rain, grateful to be leaving the abandoned cathedral behind.

I started in the tags of the reblog but might as well do a hc post!
First thing first, I do see Allen as forgiving the whole fact both Kanda and Lenalee punched him in reply to what he said/did in the first mission he had with each. He does come to understand them, just like he understand himself. He knows his choice was not one many would make, he expects to be misunderstood, so he forgives them.
However, at the same time, it does leave a scar, so to speak. And the thing is, Kanda? It doesn’t surprise Allen. They don’t get along at first, so he isn’t surprised to see Kanda be hostile, or act on it. But Lenalee? There was no tension, he was getting along with her. He felt like they could understand each other.
And then she proves that she, in fact, does not understand him. And another key difference is that Kanda, while he does punch Allen, he actually allows Allen to try and help Lala. Kanda actually listened to him and let him do it. Lenalee didn’t. Lenale prevented him from stopping a soul from being destroyed, and when he started to express his pain, “Why did you stop me” he yells, angry, because he’s hurt, because he wanted to save the soul; she punches him and angrily tell him with tears “because we are friends.”
But the truth is, it’s very one sided. What she means is “you are my friend and I don’t want to see you hurt” yes, and he does understand that, but what she also means is “I don’t care what you wanted, what matter is what I want”. Because what Allen means when he says “why did you stop me” is “why did you stop from me doing what I live for” and she basically says she doesn’t care. She shows she doesn’t understand.
Read more because it got long
“We’re friends”, she says, but she doesn’t take the time to understand what her friend actually wishes and what he fights for. And worse, once the fight ends, Lenalee is unconscious for a bit, and when she’s finally awake? She ignores him and we can see she is angry. When he finally goes to her and starts to say how “come to think about it, we haven’t talked since that time...” Allen apologizes.
He’s the one who offers an apology, and if it stopped here, if she took it, or apologized herself, it would have been great. It would have been two friends early in their friendship who recognizes each other values. But the problem?
The problem with how she reacts are a few: she says “why don’t you let me fight at your side” but the one moment he needed someone to understand him, she punched him instead. Even if she stopped him, she shouldn’t have, she should have said “because I didn’t want to see you hurt” and apologize herself too. Then the fact she calls him selfish, when she herself is being selfish. She calls him out on how he apparently carries the burden by himself, but she says “i hate your left eye” and her words bleed with the fact she does not understand his burden. At no point does she wonder how it is to see souls, or make the effort to wonder how horrible it was for him to see it die. She makes no effort to ask if he’s doing okay. Heck, she gives no apology, and does not give any clear indication of forgiving him. And you know, in the last three panels, that’s not a happy expression he has. It’s not. He might feel she won’t say mad, so he’s a bit happy, but he’s sad, because she proved to him she does not understand.
The different is that Kanda, in a sense, does understand. The way Kanda will oppose Allen, he shows he understands what Allen feels, and what he’s trying to do is show what Kanda believes to be too naive, etc. Lenalee, however, does not understand, and it shows, because it’s self centered how she opposes him. Kanda opposes him but it’s centered on Allen. When Lenalee does, it’s about herself.
Lenalee as her reasons for being how she is, and I don’t hate her. But for Allen, between Kanda and Lenalee, it is actually Kanda that is the best. Lenalee seeks to have him behave as she thinks he should, and tends to self center when she gets emotional (when he’s escaping, she’s asking why, she says you’ll be in trouble, and she says we’ll have to fight if you leave, and she cries and says it’s not a joking matter when he tries to remain light hearted. She doesn’t ask how he’s doing, doesn’t try to understand why he’s leaving, and again, it’s her own feelings that are placed forward. He has to comfort her. After all this time, she still didn’t change with this.
Kanda, for his part, puts Allen first. When they first have an hostile spark, it’s because Kanda feels he’s false (which is true, Allen masks himself). When he opposes him during their first mission, it’s because Allen is risking the mission for Lala, but also because he thinks it won’t work, and because he sees Allen say I want to be a destroyer who saves, and thinks Allen is just going to get hurt. But he still lets him do it, because Allen says he’ll take responsability. And right now? Kanda came back for Allen’s sake, and is doing what he can to help Allen.
It’s sad, because it’s a product of her environment, but Lenalee was allowed to centre things on herself, as after her trauma, she was taken care of by her brother, who places her first. She views people as “her world”, and it hits me how you see the self centering in the manner she says they’re her world. I don’t think she’s had anything or anyone who has opposed this tendency to centre on herself. So it’s all she knows, to make people hers, her world, and so, implicitely, wanting to control her world.
Kanda, meanwhile, he... doesn’t put himself first. I actually don’t think he’s either gotten mad about something done to him, or about his own feelings. He actually call people on their bullshit or point out their flaws, when you think about it. But even he doesn’t really calls out on Lenalee’s own flaws, and I feel it is because he recognizes she’s... not ready. Again, no one has pointed out the ways she acted, and in that sense, what can Kanda do? He knows well how she can reacts, since he has known her for a while, and I feel he knows it won’t work with her to show her what are her flaws.
The most tragic is: if she doesn’t learn to take into consideration other people’s feelings, goals, wishes, values, etc; she is at risk of actually having to fight Allen. Depending what path Allen takes, and while I can see him try to avoid fighting his friends; if she tries to self centre at the wrong time or about the wrong thing, it might cause a worse split.
For example: what if he wants to defend Earl/Mana, and she calls out about her own feelings to justify her not wishing him to defend Earl/Mana at best, being angry and wishing to attack the Earl/Mana at worst? She would place Allen where he has to choose between Mana and Lenalee, or at least show she cannot understand his love for Mana, no matter if she might think she understands. Even something like “I know you care but” would still end up placing her own feelings first. And the thing is, I don’t think Allen would take well this kind of scenario. At worst, he does not wish to hurt Mana and like I say, a rift form between him and her, he might even fight to defend Mana. At “best”, maybe he listens to her, but ultimately, it will hurt and he might resent her for this. He’ll associate her with loosing Mana, in this scenario where she talks him out of protecting him. Or, considering the way he’s self hate easily, he might not resent her personally, but he might fall back into self hate because he’ll feel terrible to not protect Mana.
So yeah, the problem with Allen and Lenalee is that it’s one sided, as Lenalee doesn’t make the effort to meet Allen halfway. They have good memories, they helped each other, fought beside each other, yet when it comes to core values, she doesn’t respect Allen’s own. Kanda and Allen, however, actually understand each other, and neither force the other to let go of their values, for all they often “clash”, they actually meet halfway.
Lenalee is best placed to protect the good people of the Order; but unless she changes, she isn’t the person who can help Allen. Kanda, however, is the best placed to help Allen. It’s also why I sincerly hope this doesn’t end up a canon Allena, because again, unless she changes, it would not be healthy. As it is, their friendship is not, in fact, healthy. It’s not bad, they are good aspects, but ultimately, it’s unhealthy, because when an issue show up, Lenalee makes it about herself, and Allen has to bow down/comfort her/aplogize, regardless of his own feelings.

Yullen conjecturing
I've been reading the most recent volumes of DGM (I'm not all the way caught up yet though, so no spoilers please!), and the Yullen feels more and more pronounced.
I only just came to this fandom (tragedy, I know) and I was surprised to see Yullen as the most popular ship on AO3. I hadn't really shipped anyone at first. But reading a few fics, I became attached really quickly. Now I see it everywhere.
They work well together, and as Marie says they're very similar. The reason they clash is that they remind each other of the darkness they're both running from.
But as they both turn toward it and stop running, they've grown closer. They have conversations with minimal anger. Kanda shows actual concern for Allen at times, something we've only seen him do with Alma before.
(Spoilers beyond this point.)
When Kanda tells Allen that the reason he came back had to do with his last moments with Alma, my head immediately interpreted that as Kanda realizing, as he watched BOTH his past loves' spirits fade away, that he loves Allen the same way.
Kanda keeps saying Allen needs someone like Johnny who believes in him, but I see no evidence that Kanda *doesn't* believe in him as well. He just thinks he doesn't have the bedside manner and gentleness Allen needs right now. He's not good with sweet and encouraging words. Honestly, I think Kanda feels a little inadequate. He actually smiles at Allen and Johnny when he protects them from Akuma--because it's something he's good at, something he can do.
When the Fourteenth injures Johnny's head, Kanda rushes to heal him with his blood. We have NEVER seen Kanda do that, even begrudgingly. But he's so eager to help Allen...and refusing to think about his motives....
Probably because he doesn't think Allen loves him.
Allen has a fuckton on his plate right now. He doesn't exactly have time to think about his feelings for another human being. That said, Kanda is someone he needs right now: someone who understands the darkness, someone with battle reflexes he can't easily hurt and with a strong heart whom he can't easily break (even if Kanda is in love with him), someone who heals magically fast and can throw off innocence mind/memory control, someone who is willing to yell at him and tell him when he's wrong.
When I first started watching and reading DGM, I kind of thought Allenalee/Lenallen was going to be the main ship, as your average Shounen would do. I was pleasantly surprised that didn't get pushed--no ships were--super hard. I really like how clean the story is of shounen-style romance and instead full of deep, genuine love between comrades, family, wounded war heroes.
There's still a chance that Allen and Road could end up an item, but that doesn't seem to be in line with this story. Honestly, Yullen makes sense because it really is the intimate relationship most pushed in the series at the moment.
Plus, Hoshino-sensei seems like the type who might give us a yaoi pairing. I love this series because it goes again regular stereotypes and is unpredictable in the best ways. She just might.
Although how that would work out with them fighting for the sake of the Catholic Church...could be interesting. Or not. The Church is looking more and more like an enemy....

D.Gray-Man Vol.26: Komui’s Lounge (Extended) 1/5
Featuring: Marie, Bak, Lavi, Wisely, Allen, Link
(T/N: We got 31 questions this time. It really is extended! I’ve broken it up into five parts for convenience of translating and scrolling.
Let’s start with the onslaught of the usual Kanda questions...)
Lavi: G’afternoon y’all! As always, welcome to the Komui’s-Lounge-where-Komui-doesn’t-show-up-again-this-time! And first up is...ME~~! (Pull crackers)
Link: Keep it down, Bookman Jr.
Bak: And now, the time is ripe. At long last, my debut has come! And I made it on the page before Komui, too! MUHAHAHAHAHA!!
Marie: I’m not very good at this kind of thing...but I’ll do my best.
Wisely: And here comes the Noah of the Demon Eye, Wisely~~!! Back for his second session! (Holds up two victory signs).
Allen: Wait a moment. There seems to be two deceased among us?
Lavi: Hey, I’m not even confirmed deceased yet!!!
Allen: Nobody’s saying it’s you, Lavi. Well, it’s actually you, anyway.
Lavi: Allen, you were just calling for me back in Vol.24′s lounge, didn’t you? What’s with all this darkness right from the get-go, meanie!?
Allen: I haven’t been able to eat at all, and I’m irritated.
Link: (lays a hand on Allen’s shoulder) Just forget about everything in the main narrative for now, Walker. The freshness of this discussion lounge is fading quick, and now the author’s already using trial and error.
Allen: Reckless move on the author’s part.
Wisely: Even so, it seems the author didn’t intend to bring out Bookman Jr. at first, though. Just that there was a truly unsolvable issue...
Lavi: Damn you, Hoshino...But yes, that’s what happened! The thing is, this time the most questions are directed at me! The fans are calling out to me! I heard their voices! How can I not be here for them! (heart)
Allen: Even though I can answer questions about you just fine.
Lavi: With messed-up answers, more like.
Link: Walker, here are some doughnuts, so would you cheer up already? And you, Bookman Jr, don’t get too carried away. We went over the word-count limit last two times, and both the editor and designer sent an e-mail to warn us to stay within the limit this time. All pointless talk is prohibited from all of you!
Allen, Lavi, Wisely: Roger~~
Marie: Haha...(wry grin) Having the Inspector here really is a help.
Bak: Oi, haven’t you lot been forgetting about me from the start......!?
Question 1: Kanda had a little pouch hanging from his neck when he returned to Marie and Lenalee. What was in that pouch?
Allen: You can always count on a question for Kanda, huh.
Lavi: Yeah, ain’t Yu gettin’ a little too popular? By the way, ain’t this supposed to start off with a question for me?
Wisely: Well, it’s because there’s also a wagonload of questions for Yu Kanda as ever. What a sinful lad...
Link: You there! No pointless chatter!
Bak: Huh...? He had a pouch? We disposed of those clothes Kanda was wearing after he swapped it in for the Order uniform at the Asian Branch, but there wasn’t any pouch.
Marie: Ah, that’s because I’m keeping it for him. The little drawstring pouch, right? Seems to be silver coins in there.
Allen: Money?!!! (clatter)
Lavi: Calm down, Allen!
Marie: There was this old lady who took care of Kanda’s every need back then, and she gave it to him, said it’s for travel expenses....sorry, that’s all I know.
Lavi: ........That so?
Allen: Kanda will definitely turn out like Master someday. (hmph!)
Marie: Looks like he barely used any of it, though.
(T/N: aight guys, now we know the true reason Allen decided to tag along with Kanda, right? right?)
Question 2: Is Kanda right-handed or left-handed?
Lavi: Yu agaaain?
Link: He’s ambidextrous, isn’t he?
Allen: Eh? Is that so?
Link: It’s something you’d notice right away.
Lavi: After all the time you spent fighting with him and you still didn’t know, Allen? Yu’s punches hurt like freakin’ hell no matter which fist he used, right?
Allen: Makes me sick just thinking about it.
Marie: Exactly, Kanda’s ambidextrous.
Bak: By the way, Alma was also ambidextrous, you know.
(T/N: damn, that stab in the heart when I have to go back and correct is into was...)
Wisely: By the way, over to the Noahs, the Millennium Count is ambidextrous.
Question 3: After the Second Exorcist sigil’s power deteriorated, Kanda now has hangover. Will he also be more vulnerable to illnesses like the cold?
Lavi: Yu again...? Now I’m starting to think Hoshino is trolling behind this!
Allen: He’s an idiot, and idiots don’t catch colds! NEXT!
Wisely: Well, if he does catch colds more easily then it’s good news for us Noahs. But if he’s such an idiot, guess it can’t be helped.
Marie: Hey, watch it. (sweat)
Link: Stop fooling about and answer properly!
Bak: Allow me, current patriarch of the Chang clan, to enlighten you. Just because the sigil’s power has weakened, doesn’t mean Kanda’s body will become very weak as a result. Though his extraordinary regenerative ability will be impaired, the bodies of Second Exorcists are also designed for battle, so he’d probably still be far more sturdy than normal people. Even so, unless he keeps a balanced diet from now on, there’s a possibility he might fall ill. He eats nothing but soba, doesn’t he? That won’t do!
Question 4: Those...flying needles?...that Howard Link was throwing about? What are they for? The Crows have had them in the past too, and I’m curious.
Link: Those are called Shibari (嘴針 lit. Beak Needle. T/N: “shibari” also sounds the same as “Shibari-bane”, the Crow’s binding feathers, but uses a different Kanji). Even amongst Crows, it’s a weapon reserved for the elite members. A single needle can unleash power equal to a hundred feathers (those binding feathers, flame feathers, confining feathers, etc. that Crows frequently use). The Shibari I have are the ones Master Zu used back in the day, so they’re an old model, but even now they still work very well. Though they can be a little unwieldy to carry about, in times you run out of feathers you can still fight just using Shibari. And for me right now, in particular, it’s also a way to save up on feathers, so it’s a very handy weapon.
Allen: Huh? What do you mean by “for me right now”?
Link: I have chocolate doughnuts, too, Walker.
Allen: WEE-HEE! (chomp!)
Wisely: Careful, boy...he’s tricking you with those doughnuts...
Link: Would you like some, too?
Wisely: WEE-HEE! (chomp!)
Lavi: I heard from Gramps, though. Looks like the Crows’ abilities are developed by the Chang Clan, right?
Bak: Aha. The Crow Unit was established by Grandfather Zu in his younger days. Even now, the Chang Clan is still responsible for manufacturing all the feathers, needles and other weapons the Crows use.
Marie: I see. So this is why the Asian Branch Supervisor position is passed down the Chang bloodline. The Chang Clan must have been indispensable for the Central, right?
Bak: Well, I guess.
Allen: I’ve been wondering for a long time. Why are the Changs able to use such awesome magic?
Wisely: It will be a long story, so we’d better drop it for the sake of the word count.
Link: If it’s going to eat up precious space, then let’s leave it for now.
Question 5: Do Lavi and Bookman still remember their original names?
Lavi: YAAAAAAAAAY~~ ! Finally~~! The answer’s Nooooooooooo-peeeeee! From the time I became Gramp’s heir, my name was erased!
Allen: Hey Lavi, why must Bookmen discard their real names? Isn’t it painful?
Marie: You’re one who cherishes his name, huh, Allen.
Bak: Do you really have to go that far in order to be a recorder of alternate history?
Link: Now that you mention it, we’ve received many questions on the Bookmen’s fake aliases.
Lavi: While we’re a Junior, we have to change our names every time we change the place of our log. Because those names will become the title of our logs. Thus, the log for this Holy War will be titled “Lavi”. Makes it easy to search for logs this way. As for whether it’s painful to lose my real name...hmmm, well...frankly, I don’t really know. Since me becoming a Bookman was something that can’t be helped, too. By the way, Gramps is the one who named all the logs.
Wisely: Uh-hmmm. Come to think of it, the name Lavi seems to be...
Lavi: What?
Wisely: Nah, nuffink. (munch munch). Blimey, these doughnuts sure are delicious.
Allen: Hey! You’re eating too many!
Question 6: How did Lavi and Bookman earn money for expenses during travels? The Allen way?
Allen: What do you mean by my way?
Lavi: Means gambling, of course. Ain’t it?
Wisely: Swindling Mafia bosses then fleeing with winnings and the like?
Bak: Mafia!? (falsetto)
Marie: So that’s what you’ve been up to, Allen!? That’s no good! You’re still a kid, aren’t you? Lenalee would wail if she ever hears you’ve been doing such dangerous things.
Allen: Please, please don’t tell Lenalee! I beg you, Marie! (googly eyes).
Link: No matter how adorable a face you manage to make, Noise Marie won’t be able to see it, Walker. We’ll have you tell us all about this later in detail, so for now let’s return to Bookman Jr.
Allen: Eeehhh!?
Lavi: Where were we? Oh, travel expenses, right? Well, members of the Bookman clan are everywhere and they help us out, so both me and Gramps don’t have to work for money.
Marie: You mean you have relatives all over the world?
Lavi: Yup! The whole clan comes together to support the Bookman as the clan’s leader, so Bookman can focus on his logs.
Bak: I never knew the Bookman Clan is such a large-scale thing.
Lavi: Well, since everyone conceals their Bookman lineage and outwardly leads normal lives, it’s no surprise nobody knows.
Allen: Why do they have to hide?
Lavi: Hm? It’s a secret!

Awaiting dgm 232: I'm so excited! =D Knowing dgm 232: I'm so sad! D= Honestly this just convinces me even more that Kanda was the perfect first choice to here Allen's backstory. If it was Lenalee or Johnny they'd get very emotional and hug him and mean so well but that might be too much for Allen. They could refrain themselves but Allen would still feel bad. Idk how Lavi would exactly react but I could see him go silent and try to be normal maybe later. Allen would appreciate that in a sense. -
2 But it's not the reaction Allen would need for this moment. He kind of needs to be pushed right now. I could also see Lavi getting pretty enraged on Allen's behalf too but try to keep it contained. Allen would still sense it and combined with the above they'd just maybe not go anywhere (maybe I'm trying to say maybe Lavi would feel too much inside but react too little on the outside). Kanda however might have a muted reaction. He wouldn't be all over Allen or pretend things were fine. But he-
3 will probably talk to Allen about it more. Being blunt but not heartless. After all even way back in the beginning before they barely bonded, Kanda talked out Allen's feelings over Lala and prodded Allen a bit to open up. Considering Kanda's on a mission he'd push Allen to not pretend things were fine but also allow Allen emotional space (because seriously there is some pretty heavy stuff w/Nea and the Mana and the Earl going on that'll probably be important in Kanda helping Allen later).
You described the dgm experience in one sentence nonny dkjhfdkjfh
But yeah definitly agreed there. I think the other three would... still do their best to empathize but it wouldn’t be exactly what Allen would need right now and even less in a first time telling this story. I think you’re kinda spot on about how they would all react tbh. Like I think perhaps in the future, once Allen would have sorted out a few things about his past it would help to still share it but not now.
In a way Kanda has experienced such extreme abuse in a more “loving” environment too (not to excuse the scientists, still shitty, but they were kinder at least), so he would understand not to also.. linger on it. Just like Allen just apologized for having seen Kanda’s past, knowing how much of an open wound that remains.
And like you said, Kanda had proven in the past to be a rather good listener when he starts to listen, as proven by the Lala arc, and he knows how to be patient, and he set himself in the very same mood as far as we know.
And yeah like you said, with the hardship coming their ways it’s vital for Allen to open up more emotionally speaking with how things are going to change, and how much everything linked to the Earl... will need someone on Allen’s side with an unwavering determination and such.
So yeah Kanda was the one who could make the most out of hearing Allen’s backstory. and that hurts like hell to think about it orz

Mana’s Notebook Ch 2
A/N: Well hey just barely got this out on time! This is ch 2 of a longer fic I’m working on that I hope I’ll actually finish! Also on Ao3 because tumblrs formatting hates me.
Previous Chapter on Tumblr since it went by a different name though I recommend reading Ao3s version by of the extra scene at the end.
A.W: So Cross found out.
Allen had debated on whether or not to send that one tiny text or not. He knew it was late and that Kanda was probably either asleep or answering his own set of very uncomfortable questions from Tiedoll, but at the very least he'd probably want to know Allen was going through the same damn thing--or went, considering Cross had left roughly fifteen minutes ago.
Part of him felt giddy, still, at the prospect of finding something of Mana's that he hadn't obsessively read over, but at the same time he felt guilty too. He highly doubted Cross would have reacted the way he did if the notebook had been a good thing, right? And now Lavi was going to probably get yelled at for it, even though all he did was give Allen Tyki's contact information.
Which led to a whole other set of questions that just made Allen's head hurt. He knew logically no one would probably open the door at near 4 am in the morning, much less to an irate and tipsy (though not drunk, for once) Cross. Allen knew Bookman was a colleague of Cross's and that they'd mutually borrowed things from each other for years now, with Lavi goofily acting as the messenger boy, but would Bookman really let Cross yell at him? Allen hoped not. Besides, last he'd heard from Lavi he was out delivering something for one of Bookman's clients--so would he even be home ?
Their shop wasn't even close by! Not really, so was the trip really that worth it? Would Bookman let Cross stay the night or was he going somewhere else after? If so, where? He'd said he'd be gone until afternoon so, again, was it really that serious?
“Great . ” Allen sighed and stared down at his phone, “Another thing to worry about.”
***
Just as Allen expected he didn't wake up until late the next morning. His clock read 10AM and the first thing he saw when he checked his phone was an equally as short reply back:
BaKanda: Yeah mine wasn't happy either .
Well that answer Allen's unasked question from last night. So he groggily reached for his phone with his right hand and pulled it closer before typing out:
A.W: Ouch. Sry abt that.
Immediately another ping notification went through.
BaKanda: You're up early.
Allen groaned at that and sat up. Too early, more like. Then again he stayed up later than usual so maybe he could forgive himself.
Before he could even roll off the bed to grab his shirt another text came through:
BaKanda: What was it anyway?
Oh. Well. Allen should have expected that. Cross had even said he could tell him as long as he didn't give any details. He tugged on the sweater from the night before and typed out:
A.W: Just a notebook I thought I'd lost .
Okay that wasn't really a lie, was it? Sort of? Okay, maybe it kind of was--
Suddenly his phone was ringing--
Naturally it was Kanda's number flashing on the screen. Well then.
Allen pressed the green call button and immediately turned it to speakerphone, “Someone found it. Apparently I left it at Cross's office one day.” Better elaborate, or as Cross called it convince, convince, convince before you can even be called a liar. “I was kind of writing it off as lost for good since I hadn't been there in months, y'know?”
There was an odd pause on the other end of the line. Then Kanda let out a loud sigh, “ Huh. Well then lucky you. ” There was no telling if he bought the story or not, “Guess it wasn't anything too important?”
Allen winced just a little, “Well. I was sad when it went missing. It was--I was copying down some notes. Music notes, y'know?” Okay he could feel a little bad about this later, “It probably made absolutely no sense to whoever found it unless they knew how to play the piano.”
“Most people know the basics.” There was a grunt, then Kanda was cursing, Allen was about to ask if he was okay when he continued, “Did they leave a note or anything?”
“A note?”
“Yeah. Saying who they were or how they found it? If they had it a while they probably went through it too.”
Allen grimaced again. He knew, maybe they had and that that was probably why Cross was so nervous, just like he knew he also didn't know why it was such a bad thing that they went through Mana's notebook, other than it being an invasion of privacy--
“Oi, cat got your tongue?”
“N-no!” Allen stuttered, “I just haven't looked through it yet. Fell asleep before I could.” There was another loud thump on the other end and, okay, Allen had to ask, “Are you okay?”
“Just practicing, why?”
Well then. “I shouldn't keep you, then.” That and he knew Kanda would start wheedling him, finding more cracks in his half-assed story--Allen knew there were benefits to convincing someone just as he knew there were benefits to knowing when to stop . “Are you going to Lena's today or is she working?” It was a Saturday but often times she helped out at her brothers lab so someone else could have the day off. “I...sort of texted her last night too.” That, at least, wasn't a lie even if it hadn't been anything important. He never replied back, so he knew she was probably worried.
“Fuck, really?” Allen heard Kanda groan, “Wasn't planning on it. Try just texting her. I'd rather not stop by if her brother's around.” A.k.a the lab. Who knew what happened in that lab on a daily basis? That was at least something they could agree on.
“Yeah I'll do that.” His reply was a little stilted, but they both probably knew what the other was thinking, and with very little preamble Kanda ended the call because of course that was just the Kanda thing to do.
So instead Allen opened up Lenalee's text window and reread the last few messages:
A.W: I'll see if I can get Kanda to do it? Will let u know if he says yes! Sent at 11:02PM. He hadn't said much just that he found something he'd lost. Reading back over it, especially now that Cross explicitly told him not to say anything made him feel guilty all over again.
Lena: Sorry didn't see this! Yeah let me know! Where did u need to go? Text me when u get back! Sent 11:45PM
Yeah, the guilt increased ten-fold, because again--he never had because the conversation with Cross and then he'd fallen asleep after texting Kanda and only Kanda. So for all he knew she was probably worried sick.
So he swallowed his pride just a little bit and typed up what he hoped was a decent reply:
A.W: Hey sry it was late when we got back. Fell asleep. I'm okay. Have a good day at work :)
****
Lenalee honestly didn't know whether to be worried or relieved when she woke up the next morning without any new texts from Allen or Kanda. Part of her knew she shouldn't have expected much, after all it had been late, and they both probably assumed she was asleep. So really she couldn't be too upset at them even if it meant she'd spent the entire morning glancing at her phone as she got ready. She even got ready a little slower than usual, even though she knew Komui expected her to stop by and help out at the lab around 9 o'clock.
Which meant she could only waste so much time before she had to tuck her phone away in her purse and head on her way. Part of her would question why Kanda didn't at least text her first, seeing as usually he was awake by now exercising, but at the same time it had only been Allen who texted her last night, and even though he gave Allen a ride in the end that didn't necessarily mean he knew what was going on.
Either that or he forgot his phone existed. Again.
That was always the problem with being friends with mostly guys. It was exasperating as it was endearing, so when Lenalee got to work she was almost glad for the distraction the paperwork provided. It was probably why she nearly jumped when her phone vibrated from its spot next to the pile of paperwork she'd been filing.
A rush of relief ran through her as she saw the text on the screen:
Allen: Hey sry it was late when we got back. Fell asleep. I'm okay. Have a good day at work :)
Followed by a larger rush of both annoyance and worry because that text? Didn't answer anything. Honestly it really made her wonder if he was trying to worry her on purpose, or if he was just oblivious. Chances were it was the latter, it was Allen after all, but that still left her with more questions.
For one, how did Allen know she was at work? Granted that was the easiest question to answer after all her brother usually needed help on Saturdays and even if she couldn't do much except sorting and filing paperwork she definitely enjoyed the task. It got Komui to actually come out of his office more, and she could at least say she was being helpful. Everyone else in the lab was sweet, too and kept her up to date on what insane project Komui was working on next.
Two, again where did they go? She could assume Kanda knew more and that he would easily answer her once he figured out his phone existed again. But even then she wanted to hear it from Allen not Kanda after all it was Allen who asked for a ride in the first place.
That led to the third question of what it was that Allen had even found? If it was important enough he would have just told her last night, right? Even if it wasn 't important she knew if he was excited enough about finding it he would have told her. But he didn't. He'd just been excited enough to call Kanda out at nearly midnight to go retrieve it.
And now she was worried again.
Until she heard her phone buzz again. This time it was Kanda:
Kanda: Oi did the bean text you yet?
Well at least now she knew Kanda had found his phone. Though the timing was oddly specific, which had even more questions flooding around in her head. Maybe she was thinking too hard about this, but at this point could anyone really blame her?
So she shot a text to Allen first:
Lena: Ok I was worried u dummy! Did u find what you were looking for?
Then to Kanda:
Lena: Yes he did. What happened??
At the very least she would get answers out of one of them.
****
Honestly Kanda shouldn't have been so surprised when he got a text back from Lenalee almost immediately. If Allen had texted her just like he said he did then who knew what she was thinking could have happened? That alone reminded Kanda of how little he actually knew himself, other than that he had a clear suspicion that Allen was probably maybe lying. Again he was pretty sure it wasn't anything illegal, but it definitely wasn't just some random ass notebook filled with music notes and piano chords that he was pretty sure anyone who'd gone to elementary school would probably remember.
Not that either of them really had a traditional schooling experience, but at least Tiedoll had tried.
In other words unless it had something important or maybe embarrassing in it then Kanda really didn't know why it couldn't have waited until morning. But that still left Lenalee's text unanswered and he knew she wasn't above text spamming him--at work or not. So Kanda quickly shifted back into a resting position before grabbing his phone and replying:
Kanda : What did he tell u?
Maybe it was a little mean to answer a question with a question but he also didn't know if maybe he'd told her more than him. Chances were probably not, after all it was Lenalee . She wouldn't be afraid of telling Allen how bad of an idea it was. Hell, Kanda hadn't asked just based on the assumption that it couldn't have been a bad place and now look--he found out Allen was maybe lying and landed with even more questions that in turn he was worrying too much about.
He grabbed the closest water bottle he could reach (he had several in here mostly because he usually refilled them then forgot they were in here) only to realize it was half empty. Dammit he needed some water. So he groaned and pushed himself up off the studio floor and opened the door into the hall. Tiedoll's house was much bigger than it had every right to be, but at the same time having four boys plus being an artist in need of several studios did that a person. Probably.
Also having four boys tended to make one a hover-er, because Kanda hadn't even made his way down the hall to the living room-kitchen-dining room before he heard Tiedoll call out:
“Yuu is that you? My you're up early!” There he was at the foot of the stairs with a gigantic laundry basket in his hands, sweatpants, sweatshirt and bare feet despite the fact it was, again, only February. Not that Kanda was about to point that out considering just by seeing him he remembered that painfully short and awkward conversation from last night.
So instead he only nodded his head and continued walking to the kitchen. There he opened the fridge and pulled out yet another half full bottle of water he probably shoved in there at some point, chugging down its contents before grabbing a third, turning around and-- shit .
Tiedoll was now standing on the other side of the bar with a worried smile on his face, clothes forgotten. Great. “Were you working out? Good, good, I would have thought you'd sleep in--”
“I wasn't out that late.” Kanda muttered, though hell even he knew that was a lie. “Didn't we already talk about this?” Wait, wait, no . He wasn't going to instigate this. He turned and tried to walk past only for Tiedoll to sigh softly and ask:
“If you'd like to say that counted as talking about it, then yes we did. I don't think it counts, though because nothing really came out of it.” Tiedoll was moving around the bar now, towards Kanda and oh dammit . They were talking about it now, weren't they?
*** FLASHBACK TIME***
The minute Kanda opened the front door he knew Tiedoll was still awake. Most likely because he'd either heard Kanda jump out of his window or because he saw his car wasn't in the driveway. Honestly Kanda was surprised he was even able to get out in the first place, with how attuned Tiedoll seemed to be, but the point was clearly he was awake now and probably had been the entire time.
It still always unnerved Kanda that such a calm unassuming man could have such a presence in a room before Kanda even stepped into it. Though at least he let him actually walk in, hang his jacket up and kick his shoes off first before asking any questions.
“You know I'm going to have to ask you where you went, Yuu.” Tiedoll flicked on the nearby table lamp and continued to watch until Kanda shuffled into the room. Yes, shuffled because he definitely wasn't a night owl like Allen was. He would probably have to keep this brief because he could tell when his body kept trying to wake itself back up again, and that he was teetering on that edge where he was just straight up exhausted--something only sleep could fix.
So he went with the easiest explanation first. “Allen texted. He was hungry--We went to the 24 hour McDonalds.”
He could see Tiedoll raise an eyebrow at that. He definitely didn't believe him. Not that Kanda really expected him to entirely, but they both knew it wasn't unusual for Allen to text for a ride, even though it was much later than usual. “I'd ask why this late and if you spent the entire time there but--”
“--Can I sleep first?” Kanda knew that sounded bad the minute he said it. Knew that for all intents and purposes Tiedoll could tell him no and to sit back down because yes Kanda was technically an adult now, being 21 now, but he did still live under Tiedoll's roof and rely on him for things like food and a warm place to live rent-free.
But surprisingly? Tiedoll only sighed again and nodded his head, “Alright. But we're talking about this in the morning. Don't forget.”
***FLASHBACK END***
But of course Kanda kind of had, mostly because the minute he'd stepped into his room and checked his phone he'd seen Allen's text message. He knew his talk with Tiedoll had been brief but that only delayed the inevitable awkwardness, whereas Allen at least got to sleep on whatever horrifying thing Cross said.
Great.
“So you remember now?” Tiedoll asked motioning to one of the nearby chairs, “Sit, sit. We're talking about it now while we have the chance.” Which usually meant before the others were up. Mainly Daisya because Kanda knew Chaoji would probably have to leave for work soon and nothing was ever really successfully hidden from Marie. Not with how good his hearing was.
“We really did go to McDonald's.” He started with before Tiedoll could ask again. “I was serious. He ate half of the damn menu somehow.” It still made Kanda ill to think about all that damn grease he'd shoved into his mouth.
He must have been making a face because Tiedoll started chuckling at that, “Oh I believe it, but Yuu even then you wouldn't have left so early or gotten back so late even if he ate all that. And yes I know when you left. I was dozing but not fully asleep.” He paused here then helpfully tacked on, “And when I checked I saw your car missing. So no I didn't think it was Daisya or Chaoji getting home.”
Again Kanda scowled but fuck it if he hadn't assumed that himself so, “Your point?”
“My point .” Kanda could feel when that look changed. A literal shiver ran down his back, “Is that by now you should know better than to lie. I know how long it takes you to pick Allen up and how long it takes for you two to get to McDonalds and back. I can do basic math. I know there's a span of time you went somewhere else and now you're not telling me where? I won't even point out that you smelled like cigarette smoke from a brand I know you don't smoke.”
Oh. Oh . Kanda could feel himself cringe all the way down to his toes. Not just because Tiedoll had a point, but because he probably knew the brand based off smell alone. Kanda wasn't stupid, he'd been friends with Allen long enough that of course Tiedoll had spent enough time around Cross! And if he recognized the brand--
“Now. Is there anything you want to tell me?” Tiedoll leaned forward in that way that made him both look unassuming but also like he could legitimately threaten the answers he wanted right out of you. This situation was now leaning towards the latter.
Well. Shit. Hopefully Allen would understand Kanda telling him some , even though he wasn't even sure himself of some of the details, “Allen asked for a ride.” He started off simply, sitting down hard in the chair next to Tiedoll. Maybe if he made this quick he wouldn't be mad? Or would maybe realize he was blowing it out of proportion a little bit. “It was after eleven so Lena couldn't do it.” At least he didn't have to explain that part, Tiedoll knew Komui just as well as the rest of them did. “I thought it'd be quick so I said fine. He really did just need to pick something up. It was raining,” Of course they both knew this too, “So that took longer too. Traffic wasn't that bad, he got what he left, and then got hungry so I agreed to pick up McDonalds. Didn't think he'd eat half the menu soaking wet but he did. Then I dropped him back off at home and drove back. The end--”
Except now Tiedoll was holding his hand up because of course he could probably tell Kanda just wanted to get this over with, but details . He wanted details. So he asked the obvious question first, “What did Allen need so badly that he couldn't wait until morning to get it?” And then, because neither of them had said it yet but they both already knew-- “And that also doesn't explain why you smelled like one of Cross's cigarettes. Did you stop in for a visit?” And even then they both knew it wouldn't have been so strong unless Kanda had gone into his bedroom or smoked one himself.
At least that was easy to explain, “I asked for compensation. I wasn't just going to go out in a monsoon and drive him somewhere without asking for something in return.” Wait. That sounded bad, shit . He plowed on quickly, “Especially when he didn't even want to tell me where we were going or why.”
He saw Tiedoll's incredulous face warp into something close to worry, “So you went out at near midnight and drove him to somewhere for some reason and not only that you asked him to steal some of Cross's cigarettes--?” Okay that did sound really, really bad actually.
Dammit now Kanda couldn't really blame Tiedoll for being so worried. Unthinkingly, or maybe just to give his hands something to do, Kanda started unscrewing the bottle cap on the bottle of water he'd grabbed, but he never took a sip out of it. It just felt nice and cold on his hands and helped him not look at Tiedoll as he tried to think about what he'd say, because again he didn't know. He didn't know why, even though yes he knew where they went--so maybe he could work with that? “I'm actually trying to ask him why it was so important. He finally answered me maybe thirty minutes ago.” Which. Shit. He needed to check and see if Lenalee replied too. Dammit, he should have just brought his phone with him. “He said it was a notebook he'd left at Cross's office months ago.” He could see Tiedoll stiffen up here, “Apparently he forgot about it and one of Cross's coworkers found it. Not sure how long they kept it,” Not that that wasn't kind of strange in it's own right, “but I guess they finally told Allen and somehow they arranged to either meet up or to leave the notebook somewhere.” Which...wait. That also didn't quite add up. Why had they left it in such a sketchy ass place if it was just a random notebook? Why couldn't they have given it to Cross to bring home? Now Kanda was even more confused, but right. He had to finish, at least, so he could leave . “No I still don't know why we went and picked it up at midnight unless you want me to guess.”
When he actually turned to look at Tiedoll though he could see how pale he was. That alone had Kanda feeling--not quite squeamish but also like he really didn't want to know what Tiedoll must be thinking. All he knew was he was now shaking his head and murmuring, “No, no, I mean if he tells you I'd like to know but….I supposed I'm just glad you're home.”
Why did that kind of sound like Tiedoll thought he wouldn't be? Who did Tiedoll think they'd meet up with? He knew again that Cross worked with some strange ass people, given some of the stories Allen told sometimes, but surely they weren't that dangerous….right?
Then again given the location he left that notebook they at least didn't think like a normal person logically would, so what did Kanda know?
Suddenly Tiedoll clapped one hand hard on his shoulder, jarring him out of that particular thought, before loudly saying, “Alright. Thank you for telling me this much, Yuu. Sorry for disrupting your morning workout. I'll let you get back to that though I will say please at least drink all your waters first before grabbing a new bottle. Or at least don't leave them littered around the studio! Other people use it too, you know?”
Then he walked over to the laundry basket he neglected and hefted it up before disappearing up the stairs and leaving Kanda to stare after him. He didn't even get a chance to try and defend himself, then again--fuck it. Tiedoll had a point and it wasn't like he didn't know who did it, after all Daisya and Chaoji both liked sports drinks better than just bottled water.
So Kanda sighed, grabbed the water he'd gotten from the fridge, and slowly walked back to the studio. Where he'd left his phone. He grimaced a little but pulled up his most recent messages. Shockingly he had five unread text messages from her, and two from Allen. Huh.
The first one was almost immediate after his reply:
Lena: He hasn't told me anything since asking for a ride
The next two came ten minutes after and had Kanda stalling and staring.
Lena: He said he's fine though?
Lena: Why wouldn't he be fine?
Because hadn't he just been thinking that? Or something close enough to it? Why wouldn't Allen be fine? Why did it feel like they'd been in more danger after the fact than during? What wasn't Allen saying?
Finally, the last one was from only two minutes ago.
Lena: If u can't tell me just say so.
Well. Fuck. Then again since he didn't reply immediately it definitely did look like he was ignoring her. So he took a deep breath and quickly texted back:
Kanda : Sorry Tiedoll.
Kanda: I asked him too he didn't rly answer.
There. Because now Kanda was starting to realize Allen had definitely lied. Maybe not about all of it, considering he really had grabbed something that night in the pouring rain that someone had left. But who it was and what it was? Clearly he wasn't telling the whole truth. It made Kanda wonder why he didn't want to tell them, but he knew this was probably the perfect example for why--Lenalee was nosy only when she was worried and Kanda only when he knew the other person was lying.
In this scenario Allen fit both scenarios.
Speaking of which, Kanda clicked on the two unread texts from Allen.
Beansprout: What did u tell Lena
Beansprout: She wants to meet after work. U free?
Well at least that was one way to resolve everything, maybe not perfectly but Kanda could always tell if someone was lying a lot easier when they were face to face. So Kanda quickly typed out:
Kanda: Yeah I should be. Where?
