actually one of the biggest things that gives me the most fight or flight sheer rage and panic and disgust response is when men, usually older men talk about women/girls as A Thing To Protect. was talking to my aunt and uncle earlier and i was joking about how i should be in a commercial for this kaiten-zushi chain (not too relevant of a detail) and my uncle immediately starts going off about how “a bunch of perverts are going to start being your fans and ooh i’m gonna be so pissed off at these freaks” and so on about a hypothetical situation i brought up as a joke.
this seriously made me so deeply disgusted and brought up a lot of thoughts about my relations with the men in my life. it’s a very nasty subtle way of telling a woman or a girl she is a Product to be perceived by men, both by bringing up the Pervert Boogeyman and the overly “protective” self righteous anger.
and i say product but thinking about it the way men talk about women and girls in these instances is more like they are talking about a lump of meat.

Traditional Food
1. Sushi-Sushi is one of the best known Japanese foods around the world. It is offered in various ways and prices, from the entertaining kaiten-zushi (conveyor belt sushi), where visitors can enjoy sushi for a reasonable price of about 100 yen per plate, to high-end, long-established, traditional Edomae Sushi (Edo-style sushi) where you will sit at a quiet counter to eat as the sushi is prepared right before your eyes.
2. Sashimi- Sashimi is another must-try food. Similar to sushi but without the rice, sashimi is raw fish sliced into easy-to-eat pieces. The high-quality of the fish caught in all regions of Japan makes it a great choice no matter if you are visiting Tokyo, Kyoto, or Hokkaido.
3. Unagi - Grilled Eel- Unagi (eel), a fish known to be found mainly in rivers, is a delicacy that can often be found in fine and expensive Japanese dining. There are also many restaurants that specialize in unagi dishes. At unagi restaurants, you will be able to enjoy kabayaki, where the unagi is put on skewers and grilled with a special sauce containing soy sauce, mirin, sugar, and sake. Unadon, a dish of kabayaki on top of white rice, is also offered in these establishments.
4. Soba - Buckwheat Noodles- Soba is a noodle dish made from buckwheat flour with water and flour, thinly spread and cut into noodles with widths of 1cm-2cm. After boiling the noodles in hot water, it is eaten dipped in cold soup, or by pouring hot soup over it. The sobatsuyu - sobajiru, made from kombu or dried bonito broth with seasonings like soy sauce and mirin, is crucial for having a delicious soba experience.
5. Sukiyaki - Japanese Hot Pot- Sukiyaki is a one-pot dish cooked in a shallow iron pan, traditionally enjoyed in the fall and winter in Japan. It became popular in Japan around the 19th century. Made both in homes and available on menus at restaurants, it is a dish you will want to try when in Japan.

2019年4月8日〜12日(月〜金):地獄の1週間 April 8th-12th, 2019 (Mon-Fri): Hell Week
Hello I am ALIVE! I honestly didn’t think I’d make it through this week but I somehow managed to.
So, school started this week with a 5-day auditing period (not 10 days as I originally thought--THANK GOD) in which we had the opportunity to try out classes and take additional placement tests. In an earlier post, I mentioned that I was basically illiterate in Japanese as per the low level I was put in based on the results of the original placement test. Because of that, I took as many placement tests as I could this week in an attempt to be able to take more appropriate classes; this involved going to every class I was interested in, in addition to the ez ones I was placed in. I sat by the window for the extremely ez classes to pass time, and as you can see from the first photo, the view was quite nice! (If you look closely, you can see some sakura petals floating in the wind...it was a lovely sight, but somewhat bittersweet as it signaled the beginning of the end of the sakura season [queue the WABI-SABI; if you’re confused, see http://japanology.org/2016/04/what-does-wabi-sabi-mean/]). Anyway, I can safely say that after hours of review, studying, and 25 placement tests (yes, TWENTY FIVE) in this one week, I managed to get into most of the classes that I wanted to! As of now, I have registered my classes (which will, however, involve a bit more of [manageable] altering prior to the deadline tomorrow). とにかく、本当に安心した。(“Anyway, I’m really relieved.”)
On another note, on Thursday, I was reunited with a really old friend from junior high and high school! I haven’t seen her in like over 6 years so I was super excited to see her again, especially since she randomly disappeared off the face of the earth towards our junior year of high school; I’m glad we were able to catch up about that in particular lol. Our meeting was quite spontaneous as she just messaged me out of the blue on Facebook a few days ago, asking me if I was in Japan (long story short, we had a mutual friend who knew we were both in Japan, which was the impetus behind my friend’s message). Anyway, we met up for dinner in Takadanobaba and had 回転寿司 (“kaiten zushi,” or conveyer-belt sushi) at スシロー (link here for that particular location: https://www.akindo-sushiro.co.jp/shop/detail.php?id=2054; it’s my most favorite kaiten zushi chain in Japan b/c it’s super delicious and cheap--would highly recommend!!). The wait was totally worth it and it was all-in-all a night well spent!
Yeah, OK so anyway, TLDR: today marked the end of hell week and I am (mostly) alive but honestly a lil dead inside lol. I felt a bit better after I treated myself to some delicious green curry at a cafe near my school for lunch. From here on out, I hope I’m able to enjoy my last term of college ever!!!

Today was an experience of Japan both fake and honest, exploring both its tacky commercial side and more traditional, authentic side in equal measure. After a mediocre soba breakfast, we visited the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and say some fantastic painting, sculpture and scroll art. Following that, we walked through the Ameyoko market street, nothing but wall-to-wall street vendors and shops selling all sorts of interesting wares. Lunch was takoyaki and omurice, two very anime foods I’ve been wanting to try for a while, and they did not disappoint. The omurice, in particular, was delicious; the barely-cooked eggs were so succulent and umami. Dessert, then, was a gaudy crepe stuffed full of ice cream, whipped cream and strawberries, and it was indulging to the extreme; just be thankful I didn’t go for the one with a slab of cheesecake in the center. Next up, the Shibuya aquarium to say hi to the penguins and fur seals, and then over to the Sky Tower, a popular tourist spot that took us 350 stories up into the air and beyond. You would not believe how colossal Tokyo looks from all the way up there; you feel like the city might just stretch forever across the horizon.
After than, we finished the day off with a stroll through the Asakusa district, with yet more street vendors and some truly beautiful temples. And dinner was easily the best part of the entire day: Kaiten Zushi, or conveyor belt sushi, in which the chef sends plates down a conveyor belt and you can take whatever interesting things pass you by. It’s the gimmickiest of gimmicks, but it’s also an authentic expression of the communal cuisine that defines Japan. And I swear to you today, I have never had better sushi in my life. Every plate was delicious, every piece made my mouth water, I stuffed myself to the gills, and the otoro. My god, the otoro. This is the first time I’ve had the fattiest part of the tuna, and it was like an orgasm in my mouth. If you’re ever lucky enough to find yourself in a sushi place that sells otoro, order it. Don’t worry about the cost. it is worth it. This trip has been absolutely incredible thus far, man.
