Happy 16th anniversary to After School!

After School is recognized for their unique "graduation" system where members could join and leave the group over time. This dynamic lineup allowed for constant evolution and freshness in their music and performances. The group debuted with five members: Kahi, Jungah, Jooyeon, Bekah, and Soyoung, and over the years, new members like Uee, Nana, Lizzy, E-Young, and Raina were added, each bringing distinct talents and charisma to the group.

Musically, After School is known for their versatility, covering a wide range of genres from pop and R&B to electronic and dance. Their discography includes emotional ballads like "Because of You," which became a major hit, and high-energy tracks like "Bang!" which featured the members performing with marching band drums, showcasing their dedication to unique performance concepts. Other significant songs include "Diva," "Flashback," and "First Love," the latter incorporating pole dancing into their stage act, a bold and unprecedented move in K-pop.

The group also explored different musical directions through sub-units. Orange Caramel, featuring Nana, Raina, and Lizzy, became especially popular for their quirky, catchy songs such as "Magic Girl" and "Catallena," known for their whimsical and playful style. Members also pursued individual careers in acting, modeling, and solo music. Nana, in particular, gained prominence as a model and actress, while Raina focused on her solo singing career.

mostly when i feel unjustified about my hate for the marcoses and my yearning for justice for their victims (after all, i wasnt born in their time. i have not been actively harmed by them. i live on the margins of their policies and laws), i think that i am doing this for my father. my father who talks about martial law just to talk about martial law. who talks about missing popeye after they declare it. whose father, a musician and cd salesman, disappeared for a day and then some after going bowling. i am thinking of the child who could not study his own language because of how the educational system was restructured, the child who waited for his father his family thought dead and saw him coming home, sweaty beaten and half naked after being detained. i am thinking of the young man who snuck out to the snap elections and wrote "cory" despite knowing what would happen. the young man who could not afford his university schooling but who walked to edsa and back to be there, to raise a hand and sing a song despite his own classmates gone into the night. i am thinking of the son who applies for philippine citizenship when he sees taiwan form its own dictator. he escapes while his siblings do not. i am thinking of the middle aged man who now sees his child attending the same university, who also carries memories of his father, the grandfather she never met. he is thinking of how he can keep this little child safe. i am thinking of the man who is orphaned the day marcos announces his decision to run for president, who is alone now but facing the same demons, who has no one who has shared the same burden because his wife was too young and the other ones too old to remember. i am thinking of the man who stays up with his daughter* (who is every bit as idealistic as he was, who chooses a discipline that will kill her one day) when the results come out and she cries from the weight of memory while he jokes and smiles, it will pass. with the blares of ang bagong lipunan, where he is both child and father again, while his father remains dead. he is quiet and his hands shake. i am thinking of how he is quiet after he shares these stories, again and again. he is thinking of how old he is, how long before he too forgets, and he is thinking who can remember (his childhood, his boyhood, his love for popeye, his parents, his language, his classmates, his walk to edsa, his vote in 2021, his child, his story) for him. and then i remember- that's why i remember.

thing thats really tiring about seeing ur culture on the internet is like. filipinos will hate themselves over it. filipinos will hate seeing their own culture being mixed into a media an artist likes and try to be ironic and shit about it. di pa ba napagod? di na natigil katangahan niyo, nagmumukha nang kakaibang lebel ng papansin. kinnayo. leave artists who have fun with the media they like alone. they didnt comment on their art about pee noise moments or what the fuck ever. god.
