i canât help that feel like 350 calories per cat per day across 5 clans (150 some odd cats!!!) is more prey than there is! even with really generous cooking estimates youâd need to catch a rabbit or two or a large fish or something per clan every single day of the year. i feel like that would really mess up prey populations, wouldnât it? i know animals have a lot of babies, but 3,650 rabbitsâ worth of calories every year (not to mention what other predators like foxes, snakes, and hawks are eating) feels like too much for one territory. are we assuming that thereâs more prey than there is or do i just not know how much offspring animals produce?
WELL, there's a lot of factors here, but you are actually organically figuring out something true and horrifying. BB!Cats are sapient, able to understand their impact on the environment and ergo manage it, but feral domestic cats are devastating to local ecosystems.
Not even because of caloric need btw just because of how much they hunt, and their odd behaviors.
The Bad
There is a reason why predator populations are so massively outnumbered by prey species. One rabbit would feed a single cat for days, but one colony is typically 3 - 15 cats. Most predators are solitary, or have "loose" social structures spread out over many partially overlapping territories covering miles (like alligators)! but something changed when cats were domesticated, and they now seek out dense social units unlike their wild ancestors.
That's why the only social wild cats are lions. Lion prides are extremely flexible, ranging from 3 to upwards of 30 members, and their populations are going to depend completely on how much prey they have access to. Even the shocking "infanticide" thing that male lions are notorious for serves an ecological purpose; less lions means more meat, so every cub that isn't yours is a future rival.
(tangent: the largest lion prides actually set up in major migration "hubs," where there is a constant influx of traveling animals. Not really an "ecosystem" where the pride can damage the population.)
But now domestic cats are doing this, in ecosystems that can't support them and never had predators that behave like them. They compete with the local mesopredators ("middle" hunters that hunt small game but are killed by larger predators. Ex: raptors, snakes, caniforms like foxes or raccoons, etc) and put extra pressure on prey populations.
But that's not the worst part.
In nature, there are Predator-Prey cycles. When there's too many predators, they decrease the prey population. When there's not enough prey, the predators starve and their population lowers. Here is a graph of this phenomenon;
In this way, starvation is required for an ecosystem to stay healthy. It's how nature regulates.
But human beings feed cat colonies.
So colonies end up hitting DOZENS of cats. Upwards of 30 in a tiny area. The sizes you see in canon WC and in BB are TWICE the size of what a feral cat colony typically reaches. In the real world, this is because humans feed them. They HAVE to starve to lower the population, and make no mistake, these are slow, painful deaths.
"But, if we feed the colony, then they're not hunting the local prey, right? Because they're not hungry?" INCORRECT. THEY ARE ANIMALS. Cats are not humans with our sense of morality and long-term consequences. Hunting is only partially driven by hunger, it's also driven by prey drive. Even an outdoor cat, who gets all their meals at home, is killing an average of 90 animals a year.
(note: you may hear the number "they kill 3.5 animals a day." That is a misreading of this study which says 3.5 animals a month based on owner reports; but better study shows they only bring about 18% of their kills home.)
I could get into why I'm actually not a big fan of TNR as a conservation strategy because of this, but in a nutshell, the best solution to feral cat population management overall is (expensive) high-intensity TNR (70% or more) PAIRED with (inexpensive) removal/euthanasia and other methods (like banning colony feeding). PURE high-intensity TNR takes up to 30 years to remove a cat colony in computer simulations. And they keep killing wild animals that whole time.
(tangent: you may come across articles that say that killing feral cats doesn't work. This is often based on this Tasmanian case study by Lazenby et all, where they trapped and removed cats, only to find an influx of subordinate "satellite" individuals that filled the vacuum that the previously established individuals left and increased the overall population. This is a well-documented phenomenon of predator control. They don't tell you that this is short-term and also happens with TNR, just over a longer timeline, as discussed in the above studies, and the solution is to mix methods and make sure that these programs are carried out systemically, NOT ONLY in one limited range.)
So... feral cat colonies with totally realistic needs are very harmful to local ecosystems. They are animals, and they are an invasive species. Keep your cats indoors please
The Good
But BB!Cats and Canon!Cats aren't just animals. These are cats with governments and religion. They do understand long-term consequences.
Even on the page in-canon, they show an understanding that prey comes from breeding (unlike, say, a medieval human who believed in spontaneous generation), WindClan doesn't disturb lapwings during their nesting season showing a basic understanding of ecology, and they even have a law against food waste. Like it or not, these aren't realistic cats. They are small humans with a fuzzy little kitty coat tossed over them.
So we can actually reasonably assume that Clan cats are modifying their behavior so they aren't the ecosystem-shredders that their real-world counterparts are, like;
Hunting over a wider area and having a large territory (so to address you directly anon, their territories are not as small as you might think they are)
Taking the pressure off specific areas by sending their hunting patrols to various parts of their territory
Avoiding hunting animals during their breeding and nesting seasons.
Not killing animals that are pregnant or nursing
Leaving baby animals alone so they grow into bigger food items
Not killing what they don't plan to eat
Intentionally varying their diet so they take a little from many populations.
Hunting animals that real cats don't usually target, like fawns, seagulls, and young boars.
Breeding their own prey, if you're willing to do a little domestication innovation
If you're VERY cool, give them fire. go on. do it. 20% to 50% caloric increase is prettyyy cooool~
But also, you may be underestimating just how many babies prey species produce. Let's use rabbits because these things are insane. They weren't lying, rabbits can breed like rabbits.
European rabbits (and all the domestic breeds they are descended from) have a double womb. That means that when they've given birth to their litter of 4 - 12 babies (usually 6), they can already be pregnant with the next. Gestation is a month. These babies are able to leave their mothers at 2 months and can breed by 4 months. They can have 10 litters a year.
So a SINGLE rabbit COULD have well over 100 bunnies a year... but rabbit warrens are usually 10 - 50, mostly females, plus a bunch of bucks who are more solitary and more likely to travel around. And you're gonna have multiple warrens on a territory.
Low litter estimate, small warren; 10 x 4 x 10 = 400 bunnies. Big litter estimate, big warren; 50 x 12 x 10 = 6,000 bunnies.
That said, most estimates say they functionally end up with 20 adult children a year, which then go on to breed at four months. That's still 200 rabbits a year coming out of that small warren ALONE, and isn't counting the fact that those children are also going to have children of their own.
(though, rabbits in particular are facing a massive crisis in england and even across europe because of two diseases that hit them one after another OTL but it's not related to predation.)
Don't forget that a territory also has more than just rabbits. This is also happening with mice, rats, ducks, sparrows, voles, etc. Like I said, if your cats just diversify the prey they hunt in response to population changes, they'll be golden. In BB I even have a role dedicated to this now; the Head of Hunting, who is tasked with assessing this sort of thing.
SO, to answer you directly;
Feral Cats Bad
WC characters have more in common with a small human than a cat
Pure carnivores are pretty demanding on their ecosystems
There is plenty an intelligent creature can do to reduce their impact on the ecosystem
Their territories could still support them along with the other predators
You did underestimate just how many babies prey animals have, though
Overall, they would be fine. You COULD overhunt a territory, but not with basic prey management practices.

last night instead of sleeping i was thinking about the ending of this second season and there would be so many things to analyze but i sure am not capable of doing such a thing and i only thought about this: timing is a bitch.
it's a lesson we all learn at a certain point in life, i personally connect it to "how i met your mother" which is one of my favorite shows ever.
you may have met your soulmate, the perfect person for you, the one connected to your same red thread, but if there's no timing, there's nothing you can do to fix what goes wrong.
honestly in my opinion this is the basis of the relationship between Satoru and Suguru, they're literally made for each other, they're the strongest together but the timing is wrong and i think this ending made it even more clear.
Suguru is obviously waiting for Satoru, even if it rains, even if the situation isn't the best for him who is under the rain without an umbrella. and Satoru is obviously looking for him with an umbrella in his hand, an umbrella he doesn't have in the second opening of the first season, when he's just holding blue flowers, even if it's raining. why doesn't he have one? because he doesn't actually need it with his technique. of course in his second year he still didn't keep the technique active 24/7, but still an umbrella was definitely more useful to Suguru than to him. so he was bringing him one.
but he arrives late, when he finds Suguru it has already stopped raining and the umbrella is actually useless. that doesn't mean Suguru is angry at him, they still leave together anyway.
now, i can't read a japanese cartoon character's lips, but it wouldn't be weird if what Suguru says as soon as Satoru arrives is "you're late." and it's a phrase we hear more than one time, like when Satoru retrieves Riko's body and when Suguru is about to die in jjk0.
there would be a thousand other things to say about that damn ending, about all the symbolisms inside of it, about the black and white fish, about the way they look at the fish and so on, but the timing thing is killing me.
the same hidden inventory arc is based on timing, on the fact that Riko has her days numbered, they literally follow a program. and what do they do? they change plans, they stop in Okinawa one more day, Satoru uses his technique one more day without resting as he should. even when Toji arrives and Suguru runs off with Riko to bring her to Tengen, the last thing he does is offering her a way out: he offers her more time than she's been given. but we all know how it ends, it ends badly like everything else because timing is a bitch.
both of them were always too late to avoid disaster, even the most predictable one like Suguru's mental breakdown. and it's neither of them's fault, it's just time's fault. also, neither of them is mad at each other. when Suguru arrives late at the cult's headquarters, Satoru tells him it wasn't his fault; when Satoru arrives where his best friend is dying Suguru tells him he's never been mad at the people at the institute.
and in the ending when Satoru arrives late in the rain with a now useless umbrella, they still leave together.
surely i made some mistakes and i apologize for them but i hope what i wrote is at least understandable.
to summarize, right person wrong time.
between jjk2 and good omens2 i don't even know if i'm still able to cry real tears, WE MUST STAY STRONG PPL

@nobody33333333 LISTEN UP
I just read through all of "S.O.S" today (I've been meaning to for a bit now but I didn't want to commit to it until I knew I could sit down and read straight through). And May I Just Say.
OhmywordyouareageniusandIloveitandIreallywanttoseewhathappensnextinthemostlowpressurewaypossiblebecauseIwilljustmakethingsupinmyheadforthenextforevernowohgoodnessgraciousIhadtostopmyselffromaudiblyfreakingoutsomanytimesandI'mrealgladIwasbymyselfbecauseIdidsomanylittlewigglesandfacialexpressionsofjoythatIthinkanoutsideobserverwouldbeworriedaboutmemyheavensthatwasanexperience
I loved so many parts about it!!! How it starts with Rhonda and Number Two's skepticism, the way that Constance just stares at him and how much it unnerves him, "I see", said Curtain, understanding nothing, Number Two locks him in the most uncomfortable room she can find, and then doesn't let him out until she's good and ready (and he was up for hours! did he just get dressed and then pace like he was in a little fish bowl? did he stand facing the door the whole time so he'd be prepared when they let him out?), his opinions about Kate taking the alpaca (like he could do anything about it), poor Jeffers, the sad truth that everyone went "The Emergency? The Blue Beret Incident? The Happiness Revolution? Mass hysteria, I'm sure of it. Barely even happened", poor Jeffers, the way they decide to ask the children (and how you had them call Boatwright Academy, that was such a subtle and clever continuity detail that included Sticky but showed that he was doing alright and enjoying his education), "it was becoming harder and harder to compartmentalize now, ... the lines he had drawn between Nathaniel Benedict and Ledroptha Curtain began feeling fainter and fainter. As if he was becoming whole. Visible. Vulnerable." one of the best descriptions ever, his surprise when hearing about Garrison, the way the kids make up their minds and how Kate talks about her dad (she loves him so much!!!), Constance's demands, the photographs in his wallet!!!!
And that's just the first chapter of framing narrative
I'm going to try to contain myself so I don't just point out every minute thing about your own writing back to you, but I wanted to mention some of my favorites:
> You call him Pedalian!! I don't know why, but that feels as though it is just the most quintessentially perfect name. It captures everything I needed to know and love about this man.
> DEWEY SR. Didn't know I needed to hate this guy, but I almost burst out laughing at the narrative aside to assure us that, no, Dewey never amounted to anything worth mentioning besides raising a terrible child to experience well-deserved ironic failure.
> The way you described the library was so inviting, and the fact that Garrison was lying down when we first "see" her says a lot about her attitude and how much lighter (albeit not totally) she was.
> Milligan being captain of the rowing team and Curtain being like "Why is the popular jock here?"
> "The Society of Orphan Scientists" is just exquisitely beautiful on so many levels I'm crying
> (It also reminds me of Sticky's literal naming theme!)
> Curtain being so protective of Pedalian!!! And Milligan watching like "You aren't as sneaky and cool as you think you are, buddy"
> The way he just drops "By the way, guys, I bought an island. No it isn't so we can have secret society meetings and all live together like best friends. It is a way for me to do very Lucrative Science (and I guess you can come work on your dream projects too). It's not like I have a plan to include you or take care of you or anything.
> I really love how they all get so excited about science together!! Even if he doesn't want to acknowledge it, it is such an incredible relief to be able say something outright and not have to dumb it down or explain yourself. The academic comradery is killing me!
> How they all love him but know that, just like with everyone else, he needs someone to hold him accountable! The way that was written from Milligan's perspective lends it the most tenderly caring and observant kind of credibility
> "Weâll see about that Nicky,â I'm dead. My heart collapsed and in my last moment I was sobbing tears of emotional devastation and joy. And then Milligan's response of "Garrison's not drinking?? AND Curtain's sharing a personal story??? Who ARE these people and WHAT is going ON?? Is it the end of the world???"
> THE SYMBOLISM OF "NO ONE AT THE WHEEL"
> And throughout the chapter! The metaphor about a bus full of children, Iâ
> He expects to feel jealous but he doesn't!!
> I know it's about to get sad but Garrison ratting Pedalian out in the most loving and caringly sibling-esque way
> Curtain is trying so hard to protect him!! Aw, he loves his brother so much and is so desperately trying to look out for him while also letting go and not obsessively controlling him there's no way the author would have this backlash in an incredibly traumatizing yet narratively satisfying way OH WAIT
> The soul crushing way that Pedalian's "hallucinations" are revealed to be him spending his last moments with his wifeâ afsdj ajlksg dsds
> Curtain trying his best to take care of Garrison as if he isn't also grieving intensely and falling back into extremely unhealthy coping mechanisms my wordâ
> The paradox of him wanting so badly to shut down so that he doesn't have to feel this way ever again but being unable to completely because of S. Q., that is just the most heart-wrenching thing
> He immediately shuts down that lady about how children, especially "sensitive"/"inattentive, hyperactive, socially awkward, strange, and unpleasant children" (goodness I don't think I've ever wanted to strangle someone so bad), should be treated!
> Hilldegard Billingsley foreshadowing?
> Curatin's inability to do baby-talk (but he calls him "Shep"!!!)
> He really is trying to be a good dad, but even in the midst of that and his grief he can't shut the logical and science part of his brain off (even if it's being severely impaired at the moment) and he's still trying fix things and keep the people he loves (although at the moment that is mostly S. Q.) safe
I know I said I wouldn't go overboard and then I just bullet pointed the fic, but I want you to know how much I love it and how well it is written!! I can think an idea is genius, but I will struggle to get through two paragraphs if it's written poorly and has bad grammar; you mentioned that you are trying to practice your writing and I am here to say that you are doing incredible! Not to mention that I walked into it only having seen a tiny bit of your theory and am now fully sold on whatever emotionally devastating and yet so, so enjoyable ride you're going to take us on.
Also!!! Pedalian's love of birds and how Curtain both considers it and supports it and the fact that Nicholas started hiding his excitement and joy because he didn't want to fall asleep oh goodness.
At any rate, I hope you know you've wrecked me and I am going to be losing sleep over this idea for the next who knows how long. Thank you.
#long post#letter#this is only a post because i couldn't figure out how to send it as a message because it's so long#anybody who hasn't read it go do that now please

Some Headcanons on Pandora's fauna
Just pretend that I've ripped these headcanons straight from Sir Hammerlock's almanach. Read it in his voice if you want.
Skags
A skag's armor is made of hardened bone structure, and, much like the tusks of earth's babirusa, never stop growing, even to the detriment of the creature itself. When a skag reaches a certain age where their heavy armor hinders movement and frequently causes them to overheat, they are left behind by their pack - or, when food is scarce, cannibalised.
As extreme omnivores, they have evolved an immunity to just about every bacillus and poison Pandora has to offer. In fact, their gut flora is so noxious, improperly prepared skag meat may kill just as many people as the creature did when it was still alive and kicking.
While their digestive system may seem terribly inefficent (regurgitation of indigestible matter pushes out recently eaten, undigested food as well), skags have evolved to make this deficit an efficient hunting strategy: By, and there is no delicate way to put it, projectile vomiting/defecating onto prey and stalking it at a distance until they succumb to infection, they are able to take on much larger prey such as bullymongs.
Bullymongs
Their thick, dense coat does not only protect them from the elements, but is an adaptation the bullymongs went under in order to defend against the previously discussed skag hunting strategy. Their fur is water repellant and can protect their skin from the noxious fluids expelled by skag stomachs.
Their main diet contains very little meat, and they never hunt for food, preferring to scavenge meat instead - this doesn't make them any less deadly though, as bullymongs are notoriously territorial and aggressive.
Instead, they mainly use their strong forearms to dig up roots, grubs, eggs and newborn threshers. Even in their inhospitable habitats, their burrows extend deep enough to find what little plant matter is hiding under ice or ash.
Rakk
Before human colonisation of Pandora, Rakk were largely unagressive. It is believed that they attached themselves to then common megafauna to feed, though whether this was a symbiotic relationship seen in cleaner fish or rather a parasitic one is not known. Given that it's Pandora we're talking about, it's generally assumed to be the latter.
With humans largely exterminating Pandora's megafauna for fun and profit, rakk have recently become more aggressive, swooping down from the skies to attack any prey they can reasonably take down in large numbers.
The animal known as a rakk hive does in fact have another name, a rather vulgar one at that given its facial structure. However, it is rare to still see one alive that has not been infested by a colony of rakk who use its large body to protect and warm their young.
Threshers
Threshers can only thrive near water, as soft, wet ground aids their burrowing and they can only reproduce in large bodies of water.
The Hyperion corporation soon produced warning signs cautioning folks approaching thresher infested waters. However, local bandits immediately took notes and began what was called the great switcheroo - stealing the signs and denoting clean lakes as dangerous and vice versa, giving them exclusive access to potable water and entertainment as they watched unsuspecting bots and workers get devoured. Hyperion soon found out about this tomfoolery and attempted to correct the signage, causing even more confusion. Thusly, the signs lost their function, and when seeing a lake noted as "infested with threshers" one has about a 50/50 chance of becoming a thersher's dinner.
A Thresher's eyesight is actually very poor, it relies instead on its sensitive tentacles feeling differences in vibration and air temperature. The many sensitive "eyes" on their head and tentacles are in fact ganglia, giving them more individual control over their limbs. Funnily enough, this can lead to wires getting crossed and tentacles fighting each other for food.
Stalkers
Despite their fearsome reputation, stalkers are physically quite weak. In order to accomodate their ability to fly short distances, their bones are hollow and easy to break. In addition, their eyes which are placed underneath their split jaws are easily damaged even on accident and, due to their location, the animal in question can't see what's in front of its face as soon as it opens its mouth. Nice work there, mother nature.
In order to make up for these disadvantages, stalkers rely on ambush tactics, their high mobility and ranged spike attacks to overwhelm their prey. They are very prone to "hit and run" tactics. Succinctly put, they are invisible assholes.
Once a stalker has bitten down on a prey item, it is physically incapable of letting go until the prey is fully swallowed. More stalkers die from overestimating their deepthroating prowess than predation by hunters every year.
Varkids
Varkids are, objectively and scientifically speaking, the worst.

Perfect Score â Han Jisung
â Â Jisung x Reader (feat. Felix)
â Â Genre:Â Fluff, Angst, Smut, Fake Dating!AU, Childhood Friends to Lovers
â Â Rating:Â M (18+)
â Â Word Count:Â 14.9k
â Â Summary:Â As you return home to work at your local coffee shop, youâre swarmed with couples coming in on lovey-dovey on dates. Youâve always hated the idea of love, but itâs Jisungâs mission to make you change your mind in just two weeks time.
â Â Warnings: idiots 2 lovers, mutual pining, unprotected sex, fingering, soft sex, language, light mentions of marking, mentions of bad past relationships
âThat's disgusting.â
You grimace in the most subtle way as you watch the man across the shop press a gentle kiss on the cheek of the woman next to him. For some reason your shop is packed with couples this evening. Not that youâve been counting, but theyâre probably the 50th overly lovey-dovey pair that youâve seen this just this shift alone.Â
To say âloveâ isnât really your thing isnât too far from the truth. Every time youâve been burned by someone in the past has only made your hope about love deteriorate. Relationships suck. Already been there, done that, and you donât plan on doing it again.
Youâve always stuck by the same theory; relationships either lead to heartbreak or marriage. And even still, marriage may still end in heartbreak, so whatâs the point?
âStop being so dramatic,â Jisung laughs, pulling you out of your thoughts as he rounds the corner. Heâs just in time to catch your snide remark, surely it wonât be the last one youâll make tonight though. He had just run to the back to get you a fresh package of cups after using up all the stock in the front.
Tonight is busy to say the least. The sun has already set, and itâs the afternoon rush when everyone comes in for their second daily dose of caffeine. And itâs definitely necessary â especially on a day as hot and exhausting as this one. Itâs the third day that its been over 100Âș in a row and the humidity is doing a real number to your hair.
âItâs not dramatic,â you sigh, leaning on the counter behind you as Jisung maneuvers around you, placing the cups on the shelf underneath. In your mind it absolutely isnt. Its a mystery why all these people need to publicly display their affection in a coffee shop anyway...
Itâs just the two of you on the schedule tonight. Your boss has always been kind of an asshole, just leaving 2 kids in their early twenties to run the shop by themselves while he went off to do god knows what. There's always been an aching suspicion that he just goes to the bar across the street, since his car is still parked behind the shop but heâs always nowhere to be found. Thatâs okay though, it's better than him looming over your shoulder and criticizing your technique the whole shift.
âYeah, whatever you say,â Jisung shakes his head.
In stark contrast to yourself, Han Jisung is quite the hopeless romantic. So much so that he tends to search for love in all the wrong places. Maybe a better way to describe it is that Jisung has a series of flings. Heâs not shy to test the waters of any girl he comes across â and there are many, many waters that heâs tested. Lucky you gets to hear all about each one, being his friend and all.
But to your good friendâs demise, his ârelationshipsâ never end up working out for very long. Theres always some kind of fatal flaw thatâs a means to an end. Whether it was Jisungâs fault or the girls, itâs always confused you why he could never hold onto something longer than a couple months. Jisung is a great guy, it didnât make sense.
So great that you have been best friends with him for as long as you could remember. It all started that time in pre-k, where you poured a shovel of sand on his head in the sandbox. Initially, it did make him cry, but he got over it eventually. Ever since, heâs been right by your side, sandy hair and all.
âHow much longer,â your eyes roll back in your head, neglecting to look at the watch on your wrist in fear that your shift has a significant amount of time left. The night has been dragging on since you stepped foot in the door and heard the little jingle as it opened. You wouldnât be surprised if youâd only made it through half your shift thus far.
âJust under an hour. Want to start the closing checklist so we can get outta here?â Jisung offers, reaching for the rag and sanitation bucket at the end of the counter.
Nodding your head, you follow his plan â beginning your mission to clean like a speed demon so you can leave no later than at 8 oâclock on the dot.Â
Luckily, closing tonight goes as smoothly as it possibly can. You and Jisung are ready to get out of there at 8 on the dot, thanks to your determination to mop like a mad woman and stock the front as fast as humanly possible.Â
The air outside feels crisper than usual. Maybe its because youâve been locked up in a small room that smells like coffee beans for 10 hours, but youâll never get enough of the night air.Â
âSo what are we doing tonight?âJisung asks, his fingers adjusting the headband that sits just above his forehead.
âI was planning on going home and getting some restâŠâ you trail off, avoiding eye contact with him. Jisung always goes out after your weekend shifts and never lets up on convincing you to tag along. So you canât look at him, his eyes are much too convincing make contact with, and you are beyond exhausted from working a double today.
âGah youâre so boring,â he teases, stopping in his tracks in the center of the parking lot to ruffle the hair on top of your head, âit was an early night we should do something.â
With a deep sigh, you stop as well, smoothing down your hair as a pout forms on your lips. The suggestive smirk settling across Jisungâs face is telling; he knows heâs about to get his way before you have the chance to turn him down or fish for another excuse. So you tilt your head, subtly rolling your eyes as you wait for him to explain what his big plans for tonight are.
âIâll be at your house by 9.â
Accepting defeat, you shoot him a thumbs up before turning to get into your car. Asking any more questions would take away any time you had to wash up â and smelling like coffee beans any longer is going to drive you up a wall since it hasn't already.
It doesnât take much time for you to rush home and get ready, and before you know it Jisung is there to pick you up. Only a few minutes late, but thatâs just par for the course and right on time in Jisung terms.Â
The car ride to your destination feels like a blur with how exhausted you are. So when you end up at your favorite boba spot, you immediately perk up. Those tapioca pearls always manage to give you a second wind.
But when Jisung decides to take a seat at one of the round tables just outside the shop instead of getting back in the car you know somethings up. You were expecting to hop back in the passenger seat of his car, maybe listen to some music for a while and drive around to kill time.Â
Initially he doesnât say much. His legs just bounce hyperactively while he fidgits with the straw of his drink. Itâs almost like heâs waiting for you to speak up; his eyes staring down at the cup in front of him instead of sipping from it, lip caught between his teeth.
The energy is off. Not only did you expect to hang out and do something adventurous like Jisung normally would, but now youâre watching his cheeks grow red while avoiding conversation.
Awkward silence becoming too much to bear, you take matters into your own hands. âSo how are things going with that girl?â
âOh yeah,â he sighs, his fingertips drumming along the surface of the table, âshe didnât really work out.â
Unsurprised by his response, you just nod along. Its always to expect since heâs the pickiest person youâve ever met. His last relationship ended because he thought the girl breathed too loudly. The girl before that had an annoying laugh, and then the one before that didnât like cheesecake. There always seems to be a laundry list of deal-breakers tied along to each one of Jisungâs relationships, and that is something youâll always expect.
âYouâre probably better off.â
You donât think much of the words before they leave your lips. Relationships are a ton of work, and youâve never understood the point of to putting all your effort into something like that. There is a way to just be happy on your own, you know.
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â his eyebrows furrowing in response, hands gripping his thighs in anticipation
âYou know what I think,â you tilt your heat matter-of-factly, ârelationships are kind of just a waste of time.â
âWhat is with you and all this âanti-loveâ stuff anyway, Y/N?â
Now thats a response that you are not prepared for. The question catches you off guard, a boba bubble almost catching in your throat leaving you a coughing mess. Jisung chuckles at your discomfort, waiting patiently for you to get it all out and just answer his question, as uncomfortable as it is.Â
âIâve wasted too much time with too many dead-beat guys to even think about love,â you sigh again, your coughing fit subsiding as you reach for your cup once again.
âNot every guy is a dead-beat.â
His words carry a harsh bite to them, almost as if he finds youâve said offensive. It burns his ego a bit, assuming that youâre grouping him in with all the guys youâve been with in the past. Which is strange, Jisung should know that heâs different. For one, youâve never dated him before and two, if he was such a dead-beat you wouldnât have kept him around for so long.
You arenât able to talk to guys, or most people for that matter, in the same way that you talk to Jisung. Heâs the one you rant about all the assholes to. He knows all the shit that you donât tell anyone else, heâs like your own personal human diary. Secrets are always safe with him, it's not like he has anyone who would listen to the gossip even if he wanted to tell.
After a minute of silence his expression changes, Jisungâs eyes squinting at you in that âI have a crazy ideaâ type of way. Itâs a look that you havenât seen very often, and you canât say that youâll ever get used to it.Â
âOkay then Iâll make you a deal,â he proposes, a glimmering look in his eye that made you somewhat nervous. You never know what you are getting with Jisung, but most of the time his âdealsâ are on the crazier side.
âWhat is it?â You still ask although youâre a bit nervous to hear his answer. If his plan is to set you up with one of his delinquent friends or somethingâ
âBe my girlfriend.â
Your eyes widen as the words fall from his tongue, confusion taking over your expression as a small chuckle slips past his lips. Instinctively your stomach tightens, the air around you now feeling a bit heaver each second time ticks on. He can't be seriousâŠ
âYour what?â
âTwo weeks is all Iâm asking for. Be my girlfriend for just two weeks, and Iâll show you that love isnât as shitty as you think it is.â
âYouâve gotta be kidding meâ you shake your head, a disbelieving smile stretching wide across your face.
âCâmon Y/N,â he challenges, âitâs two weeks of your life, what else do you have to do? I think it could be fun.â
The quirk of his eyebrow and quick squint of his eyes grabs your attention. Heâs serious about this, scarily serious, and you arenât quite sure how to react to that.
âWhatâs in it for you?â Your chin falls into your palm as you stare at him, waiting for his response.
âWell for one,â he starts, a sigh leaving his lips, âif it works then I wonât have to listen to you complain about how much relationships suck anymore.â
Just when you don't think you can roll your eyes any further into the back of your head, your own actions surprise you. If looks could kill, the one youâre giving him right now would surely take him out. He doesnât pay much mind to it though, heâs used to your sass and just shrugs it off.
âThis is an awful idea,â you glare at him as if it will change his mind. Youâre certain this experiment of his would not change your own. Love sucked, and that was that.
âTwo weeks,â his voice carries a taunting tone, his eyebrows wiggling to entice you into his plan. He isnât going to give up on this easily, you know Jisung. And Jisung always gets his way.
âFine,â you huff, âtwo weeks and thatâs it. And if my mind isnât changed you owe me 3 more of these,â you say, picking up your boba from the table and shaking it at eye-level for emphasis.
His bottom lip catches between his teeth, satisfied with your response. He isnât exactly sure how heâll manage to pull this off, but heâs definitely up for the challenge.
âWe start tomorrow at 8, Iâll pick you up after work.â
Crossing your arms over the table, you bury your head in your arms. This is going to be the most interesting two weeks of your entire life.
âWait, you're like dating dating the Han Jisung?â Felixâs jaw drops, excitement prevalent on his face as you spill about your night with Jisung.
Felix is the only person in your life that understood your hatred for relationships, other than Jisung of course. Not that he shares the hatred himself, heâs just heard enough about how much you despise being in one to know just how you felt. Heâs only heard about it every day for the past several summers.
Felix is your best friend, other than Jisung of course. Heâs also the only person in this world that you could bear to work with on a Saturday morning.Â
âThat's the plan,â you sigh fiddling with the containers on the counter. Itâs pretty slow for a Saturday morning, only a handful of customers have come in so far and it's already 11 am.
Thatâs the thing about working at a coffee shop â and it sucks when it's busy, and it sucks even more when it's slow. At least it isn't a terrible job, you at least have Jisung and Felix to keep you company and that's always worthwhile.
âAnd for the record,â you turn to look at Felix, a grin still evident on his face, âI donât think this is gonna change my mind about the love stuff.â
âYou know how Jisung is,â his eyebrow lifts, âso you never know. Maybe something could happen.âÂ
If anyone was surprised that you were dating someone, fake relationship or not, it would be Felix. On top of that, youâre dating Han Jisung. As in, the same Jisung that ended a 3-month relationship last year because the girl âsmelled too much like peachesâ and it was âtoo good to be true.â And now that youâre the one stuck with him for the next 14 days, it is only a matter of time until he finds the deal-breaking trait that turns him away from you.
âOkay no, that's exactly why this is only two weeks. If I know Jisung, heâll be over it before the 2 weeks even ends.â
âWhatever you say,â the pitch of his voice is raised teasingly. You can tell he doesnât believe this will be just a âtwo-week thingâ by the funny little look on his face. You hate that look, and you hate how Felix always seems to be right.
Subsequently Felix sees a lot of things that you arenât able to see for yourself. Youâve grown up with Jisung, grown accustomed to his unique mannerisms and behaviors without even noticing. Felix, on the other hand, has a different point of view.Â
Heâs not in it like you are, so gets to see the way Jisung looks at you; the way he hangs on each and every word that leaves your mouth with a sparkle in his eye. He notices that Jisung longs to make you laugh. And he watches the toothy grin each that grows on your face each time a chuckle breaks through your lips. Felix notices every behavior that you see as nothing more than âfriendly.â But who is he to say? So, for now, the information remains tucked away and stored in his mind for a later date.
Your fingers drum on the clean marble countertop beside you, leaning against it as you wait for a customer to come in. All this time with nothing to do is really doing wonders for your imagination; thinking about what Jisung has planned for the two of you to do tonight. Nothing special, you hope, he really doesnât need to go all out for this.Â
The lack of customers and silence that's fallen among the shop is just making it easier for your mind to wander off. It was beginning to make you sick how much you were thinking about Jisung and nothing has even happened yet. It's not like you have any reason to be nervous, but keeping all these thoughts trapped in your thick skull is starting to give you a headache
âHeâs picking me up after work.â You blurt it out without thinking much about it. No one is here, you might as well lay it all out there for Felix to know since there's nothing better to do.
âHeâs picking you up? Like youâre going on a date?â
âShut upppp,â your eyes roll at his teasing nature, growing slightly embarrassed by how giddy the thought of this âdateâ is making him, and you for that matter. Itâs just Jisung. And you are just hanging out like you do every other night. There's nothing different about tonight and youâll be able to prove that to yourself and Felix by the next time you see him.
The rest of you shift flies by â it always does when you work with Felix. Before you know it, the closing checklist is coming to an end, only a few steps left before you can finally get out of here. The clock had just turned to 7:55 pm, but Jisung still isnât here. Not that youâre expecting him to be on time or anything, this is still the same Jisung you have always known.
What you arenât familiar with is the nervous butterflies fluttering around in your tummy as the clock approaches 8 pm. What are you even nervous about? It isnât a blind date, other than the fact that you have no idea what youâre doing. And it isnât even a date. Itâs Jisung for crying out loud.
Speaking of the devil, the chimes in the front of the shop ring as Jisung passes through the doorway. You donât see who it is at first, your back turns to the door as you sweep behind the counter. The chimes ringing at this time of night do trigger your fight or flight instincts though, ready to turn to whoever is approaching and give them a dirty look for coming in this close to closing time.
But once you turn around and see Jisung standing in the doorway with a bouquet of sunflowers, your tension quickly subsides. You swear that you can feel your heart skip a beat, heat rising to your cheeks as you try your hardest to form a coherent sentence. It's okay that you arenât able to, though, the surprised look on your face is enough for his smile to light up the room.
âIâm here to pick up the pretty girl with the espresso stain on her shirt,â he chuckles, his bottom lip catching between his teeth nervously.
Tonight heâs dressed a lot nicer than usual comfy attire; a nice shirt with a pair of dark jeans that hug his slim figure. His hair is a lot lighter too â a vast change from the midnight black strands that normally frame his face. Heâs really going all out for this thing â and right now all that youâre wearing a pair of running shorts and a t-shirt with coffee stains down the front.
When you look to your right, Felix is just as stunned as you are. Frozen in his spot as his jaw practically sweeps the floor, he looks at you with wide eyes, his eyebrows raised as a smug expression crosses his face. For a second you contemplate asking him if heâs all set to finish the closing checklist on his own, but before youâre able to speak up heâs already shooing the two of you out the door.
With a goofy grin displayed across his face, Jisung hands you the bundle of flowers, tied together with a delicate white ribbon. You mumble a thank you, still stunned that he showed up here looking like that to take you out tonight. So he is the romantic type, note taken.
âYou like nice,â you gulp nervously. It already feels like a date and you havenât even left the parking lot yet. If this is how things are going to start you had an exciting 13 more days ahead of you...
âSo do you,â he smirks, his eyes wandering down to the small brown stains littering your shirt. Eyes narrowing, you read the expression crossing his face â of course, heâs joking. âI brought you some fresh clothes to change into donât worry.â
Relief rushes through your body as the words leave his lips, followed by a slight pull on your heart strings. Knowing he took the time to think about bringing you something else to wear so you didnât have to sit in your coffee scented clothes all night made you feel warm in the strangest way. Heâs thoughtful, and it's weirding you out â but in a good way.
âSo, where are we even going?â
âYouâll see.â
A vague yet interesting, and very on-brand response from Jisung. Heâs always been a fan of surprises â as long as heâs not on the receiving end.
The drive to your destination drags on forever. You arenât quite sure how long youâve been on your way; between your agile back seat changing of clothes, which you are surprisingly skilled at, and the anticipation coursing through your veins, youâve lost track of time. All you know is that youâve been driving along the backroads of your area for at least 15 minutes, and there is nothing around you to indicate that your destination is near.
âThis is it.â The car pulls into a small dirt parking lot, dimly lit by some dingy street lights that arenât doing a very good job at their primary function. It's pretty hard to see whatâs around you, no matter how hard you squint and press your forehead to the window to get a better look.
âWhere are we?â The question leaves your lips in a worried fashion. Trees surround the parking lot on all three-sides, while the road you've pulled in from occupies the fourth-side. Youâre hesitant to get out of the car, but as Jisung rounds the front and opens the door for you, youâre on your way out. He motions for you to hold on as he pops the trunk â returning with a blanket and a reusable shopping bag filled with god knows what.
He still hasnât given an answer to your question though, and you still arenât quite sure where you are. If It was lighter out you assume it would be beautiful here, all the greenery dark and shadows hovering over you from the trees.
The bright light from his cell phone flashlight lights up the way, a path on your right
âHell no,â your arms cross over your chest as you stand still in your place. Heâs out of his mind if he thinks youâre going into the woods this late at night. Youâve seen enough horror films, stuff like this never ends well.
âCâmon, itâs not as bad as it looks,â Jisung laughs at your pouting manner, amusement filling his system as you glue your feet to the ground of the parking lot. His puppy dog eyes plead for you to follow him, a hand outreaching in your direction for the taking. You contemplate it for a moment, your eyes narrowing as you ponder the possible outcomes of the situation before you.
âFine,â you huff as you take his hand in yours.
His hand feels different in yours this time. His long fingers lacing between your smaller ones in the perfect fit that youâve neglected to notice before. Youâve held his hand before, platonically though. This time itâs platonic too though, right? Itâs just a date. A platonic date between two friends. Two friends who are dating on a two week trial period. So yes, it is strictly platonic. Right?
The dirt path doesnât drag on for too long, but the sounds of bugs ticking and twigs breaking beneath your feet is enough to startle you. Every scared and breathy gasp that leaves your mouth is followed by a small fit of laughter from Jisung. At least one of you is amused.
But the dirt path soon turns rocky, a clearing becoming more and more noticeable as Jisungâs flashlight brightens the way ahead of you. The rows of trees come to an end as the ground flattens, a giant slab of rock lying beneath your feet. Out ahead of you is completely dark, and until you approach the darkness you donât notice that youâre just a few yards away from the edge of a cliff. A river lies below the edge, the sound of water rushing fills your ears and calms your nerves. It is quiet out here, peaceful and without distraction.
Jisung stands back as you admire the scenery around you â your own phone flashlight now out and panning around to look at the view. Itâs beautiful out here, nothing to worry about but the sounds of the water and whatever Jisung is doing behind youâŠ
You couldnât have zoned out for more than 2 minutes, but once you turn back around to face him a picnic blanket lies on the ground before you. Snacks scatter the extent of the fabric, a few candles placed in the center
âYou really went all out for this, huh?â A nervous laugh leaves your lips before you swallow harshly. Never in your life has a guy ever gone all out like this for you. A late-night picnic at a secret location, fixed with all of your favorite snacks and some candles for ambiance.
âHad to,â he smiles, âitâs our first date.â
You join him on the blanket, grabbing for a bag of popcorn as you sit down. Maybe relationships wouldnât suck so much if all men treated you like thisâŠ
But itâs just Jisung. Jisung who already knows all your favorite things to eat. Heâs just trying to be convincing â to prove to you that men take you on dates, do nice things. But stuff like this never lasts. Two weeks from now youâll be going back to the same old Jisung and Y/N friendship that youâve always had.
The conversation goes on as normal tonight, he doesnât make any moves (as expected, itâs Jisung) and you enjoy the view and calm atmosphere with your fake but not so fake boyfriend. You stay out on the cliff for a few more hours before he takes you home. Jisung put a lot of effort into making tonight special, and you appreciate him for that. But even after all his effort, you know that real relationships arenât like this.
Every guy youâve dated would try to woo you over in the beginning too. They call it the honeymoon stage for a reason. Things are always great in the beginning, lavish gifts and dates, loving gestures. That kind of thing never lasts. Soon the effort runs out, the guy gets bored of putting the work in, and they end up sleeping with your freshman year roommate. Well, at least that's how it is for you.
The bundle of sunflowers Jisung gave to you earlier on in the night sits on the end table next to your bed. Each time you look at them all you can picture is the goofy grin he sported as he stood at the entrance of the coffee shop. It replays in your mind like a movie. How he dressed up all spiffy just to take you out. How he took you to a spot only he knew about, somewhere so off-site and serene that he knew youâd remain uninterrupted. You canât help but wonder if heâs using the same old tricks on you that he does to other girls though. If he only knew about that place because heâs taken someone there before.
Not that it matters though, you arenât his real girlfriend. Youâre just on a trial period. But for some reason the thought that he might have brought another girl to the same spot before doesnât sit well with you.
âSooooo,â Felix teases, letting his chin fall into his palm as he leans on the counter before him, âhow was your date with Y/N?â
Jisung chuckles at his nosiness, heâs sure youâve already told Felix all about it. There are no secrets left between you two. Even sometimes Jisung felt like the odd man out when youâre all together.
âIt was good.â
Jisung keeps his answer short, leaving the rest up to his imagination. He isnât one to kiss and tell â or to not kiss and tell. Keeping his private life all to himself is something he takes pride in, things are just better that way.
âJust good?â Felix challenges, knowing there is much more that heâs leaving out. His eyes narrow as he waits for his response. You havenât told him anything about last night, not even where you went after he picked you up. Things are radio silent on your end, which left Felix dying to know what actually happened on your âdate that wasn't a real date.â
Jisung glances back at him, contemplating whether or not he should spill the beans. It would be kind of nice to have someone else to confide in. Especially since it's always you on the receiving end of his secrets; however, this may be the one secret that you donât know of.
He chews on his bottom lip pensively, if anyone knows whatâs on your mind, it would be Felix. Not that Jisung would ever want to pry, there's just no indication of how you feel about last night, or about him. Before Jisung can even open his mouth to speak, a knowing smirk is spread wide across Felixâs face. Itâs that kind of look that makes him nervous â he knows something.
âYou like her donât you,â he muses, rubbing his hands together smooths as the words catch in the air. Itâs out there now â and itâs obvious. Well, maybe not obvious, but it's clear as day to Felix â and that is more than enough to make Jisung worry.
âI donât,â Jisung denies the other boyâs claim, his willpower too strong to give in.
âOh yeah? So why do you self sabotage every one of your relationships then?â
The words catch Jisung off guard; his jaw clenching harshly as an annoyed breath is forced out of his nostrils. He wants to deny the claim once again, but he canât bring himself to keep brushing off these feelings that have had a grip on him ever since he was young.
Felix is right too. He does sabotage each relationship that comes his way. Jisung goes out of his way to find something wrong with each girl he dates. He can never admit it to himself, but in the back of his mind, he knows that it's the fact that none of those girls are you. None of the girls heâs ever met could ever match up to all that you are. In his mind, you held the perfect score, and no one else had ever come close.
âItâs written all over your face every time you look at her you know.â
There's no way heâs that obvious... Did his feelings show that much whenever he was around you?
âWhat do you mean?â Jisung clarifies, the small once of hope bearing weight in his chest that Felix will follow up with a âjust kiddingâ or change the subject. Only the silence that falls on the room is enough of a response for Jisung to get the clue.Â
âJust please donât tell her,â he avoids eye contact with the other boy, hand gripping harshly on the countertop as he stares down at the black and white checkered tile. âI just wanted to see if I could change her mind â about the love stuff, you know?â
The second you find out about Jisungâs feelings all bets would be off. Thereâs no way youâd let your little arrangement continue, not if either of you could end up hurt. And he knows you only agreed to this because there is nothing between you romantically, it was a deal between two friends. The second feelings get involved, everything gets all mushy and confusing, and Jisung canât lose you.
Felix bears his weight on the counter behind him, leaning comfortably on the cool glass. âBelieve me, I want her to be done with that âI hate love thingâ just as much as you do,â he sighs, looking around momentarily before he clears his throat. âWant me to be honest?â
âPlease.â
âI think you might be the only one who can change her mind.â
Jisungâs heart skips a beat once the words leave Felixâs mouth. Blood rushes to his ears, pumping like a snare drum as he considers his thoughts. His stomach begins to twist as he considers it, almost confused about what Felix means, but not willing to accept it. You only agreed to fake-date him, you still hate love.
A comfortable silence fills the air, Felix watching him as his lips roll between his teeth, deep in thought. Change your mind. The words repeat in Jisungs head like a broken record. Thatâs what heâs trying to do, all for the right reasons of course. So that you donât have to be so miserable about it anymore.Â
But behind those selfless reasons are several smaller, selfish ones. He gets to be with you as more than a friend now, and although itâs nothing more than some kind of test run, he canât help but feel like this can be something more too. Itâd be crazy to ignore the feeling he has deep in his chest, and maybe it's a sign not to.
âLike you thinkâŠâ Jisung gulps, clearing his throat as the words stutter out of his mouth, âI could get her to fall for me?â
The lack of response that Felix gives is ominous, but the raise of his eyebrows and toothy grin forming on his face needs no words to tell.Â
If anyone is to change your mind, itâll be Jisung.
That night Jisung took you to the drive-in movies. To be quite honest, you couldnât really recall what was playing, some Pixar film with bugs as the main character if you could remember it correctly. You were far too distracted laughing with Jisung, watching as young kids played around on a grassy patch near his car. The giggles that left his lips each time the little girl waved to him were music to your ears. You never noticed how much he loved kids, how good he was with them.
The image of his hands clasped together as he fawned over the little girl, picking dandelions in the grass and racing to place them by your feet was burned into your memory. The boxy grin that graced his face all night long. The way his eyes squinted from his cheeks, pushing up as he smiled so big. The whispers of the word âcuteâ each time her pigtails bounced while she toddled away.
Missing the movie doesn't disappoint you. If anything, the memories you've saved from tonight are more than enough.
The next night you were unable to go out, the shop was so busy that you were not able to leave until an hour and a half after your shift was supposed to end. Some punk kid dropped a cup of iced coffee on the floor on his way out and decided it would be best to leave it there without cleaning anything up or letting you know. Maybe if it hadnât been so busy then you would have noticed the spill before it dried up and there were coffee stains stuck to the tile floors.
Naturally, you spent a good 15 minutes trying to mop up all the stickiness on the floor. But to your luck, Jisung is working with you that night. Once all the customers left the shop he hooked his phone up to the speakers, grabbed your hands, and danced you around the shop. Well, it was supposed to be dancing but it probably looked more like Jisung swinging your arms as you attempted to not trip over your own feet.
It makes up for not getting to go out though, and youâd take a night like that over a fancy dinner any chance you got.Â
Itâs been 12 days since you became Jisungâs girlfriend, and as the remaining days decreased, so did your hatred for love. Each night he planned something special. The real kicker was the texts that you get once he makes it home from dropping you off every night. A simple âI had a great time tonightâ was enough to make your heart swell and heat rise to your cheeks.
And as you notice your hatred for love and relationships leaving you, you notice another feeling enter your system. Or several feelingsâŠ
Things are getting just as sticky as the night when two frappuccinos splattered all over the shop floor, whipped cream and all. Spending time with Jisung like this is bringing some things to the surface you didnât know were buried in the first place.
Every night that you spent with Jisung over the past 12 days allowed you to see him in a new light. You got to see him on a different level than just friends. You got to see what every girl that fawns over Jisung experiences.
Something about your friendship never let you jump past that barrier. You only see him as a dear friend of yours. Nothing more and nothing less. And now the issue is that...you arenât sure how youâll ever go back to see him as such.
You like Jisung as more than a friend, that's for sure. And you know because of that things will never be able to go back to the way they once were.
Maybe you're reading too much into it, but your gut is telling you that you aren't the only one feeling this way.
The feeling of butterflies that pound in your stomach each time you meet eyes with him has to be reciprocated. There is just no way you can be feeling this way and he isnât.
This isnât like the feelings youâve caught for any guy before, this is something else. Every night when you go home you lay in bed, staring at your ceiling with a dumb grin on your face as you think about your time together, about him. About the way his black curly hair falls in front of his eyes each time he looks down and how his smile lights up every room he was in.
These things that you were so blind to before canât escape your thoughts, and it makes you wonder how many times or things youâve looked over that make you melt, just like you are right now.
But in just 2 days, this trial-boyfriend period will be over, and youâll have to go back to being just friends. Each day, each hour, each minute that approaches feels heavier and heavier. Anxiety floods your system each time you think about things being over, or that this arrangement you have isnât even real.
When you think about the growing feelings you have for him, you honestly can't imagine what your life will be like any other way. What it would be like going back to just hanging out here and there. And what it would be like
You canât even fathom thinking about what it would be like hearing him talk about another girl again. It makes you sick thinking that there's going to be someone after you, because in just 5 days this will be all over, and youâll go back to being the girl best friend, nothing more.
Maybe itâs just wishful thinking that Jisung has more feelings for you too. But the glimmer in his eyes as his bangs brush out of his eyes and they land on you tells a different story. When he looks at you it feels like you are the only two people on earth. He sees nothing else but you, and the way your eyes sparkle back at him.
Each day you spend with Jisung after that feels like a wrench tightening the screws of your heart. 14 days is just not enough.
âEarth to Y/N,â Felix says waving a hand in your face.
You must have zoned out, for god knows how long.
âThinking about Jisung?â
âWhat?â you immediately straighten your posture and brush yourself off before responding, âN-noâŠIâm just thinking.â
âRight,â the sarcasm drips from his lips, not sparing you any time to save yourself as he turns away, beginning to wipe off the tables in the front.
For personal reasons, youâve kept Felix out of the loop during this whole âfake-boyfriend Jisungâ thing. Itâs better if you keep your feelings to yourself until you figure them out. And although it feels really really strange not giving Felix the intel on whatâs going on in your life, you know itâs for your own good.
Once you put what is in your head out into the world, you canât take it back. And what if all these things that youâre feeling is just a part of the honeymoon-phase. If that even existed anyway⊠But if all these feelings for Jisung are due to him trying to woo you and change your mind, everything will just fade away as things return back to normal. And then youâll be left loving him in silence while you watch him blow through relationships like a leaf blows through the wind.
Something in you tells you that this isn't the case, but the small shadow of doubt in the back of your mind keeps you from talking to your best friend about it anyway.
The thing is, you don't have to tell Felix for him to know. Every time Jisung picks you up from work to take you out you shine. Your smile spreads so wide heâs afraid your cheeks will tear. The nervous shake of your fingers as you grab for your belongings as you head out the door doesnât go unnoticed in Felixâs eyes. He knows you too well to look over things like this, he just wanted to wait for you to say something first.
But now that you arenât, Felix has decided to take matters into his own hands, asking you about it himself.
âFelix,â you start, waiting for his attention before you pull out a stool, sitting down and motioning for him to follow suit. Quickly he does, a questioning but knowing look evident on his face as the stool squeaks under him. âYou know how this thing between Jisung and I is just an experiment or whatever?â
He nods in response, his hand quickly falling into his palm as he listens intently to your words.
âI think I messed up.â Your head is buried in your arms, laid over the tabletop in embarrassment.
âWhat do you mean?â
His question is more for clarification, he wants to hear you say it yourself. Felix knows that youâre gonna tell him that youâve already caught feelings. He sees it coming from a mile away, you confirming it is just the icing on the cake.
âDonât make me say it,â you whine, neglecting to pick your head up and look at him. You can feel the grin on his face. You know he's smirking at you right now, doing his best to hold back a laugh. Finally, you over the âI hate love and relationships suckâ thing.
âI have no clue what youâre talking about,â he sings, quite obviously teasing you while another deep sigh echoes from your chest. You manage to pick your head up, leaning onto your elbows with your chin caught between your palms as you face him.
âI like him.â
It comes out as a whisper, but Felix hears it loud and clear. If you didnât know better, youâd assume that the smile on his face can't grow any larger, but it does. He jumps up from his chair in victory, doing a funny dance with his arms whooping in the air to celebrate. Youâre confused as to why, but youâre too far in your own thoughts to pay it any mind; your head just sinks back into your arms as your forehead presses against the cold metal table beneath you.
âI knew it,â Felix smiles, his happy dance subsiding as he positions himself back down across from you. âI knew this fake dating thing was gonna work.
âYeah well it really worked, because now I have feelings for a guy thatâs never gonna reciprocate them for me.â Your tone is laced with sarcasm, a disappointing ring sounding off on each of your words. Youâre too embarrassed to look at the boy sitting before you, worried that if you do all the emotions youâve been holding onto for so long will spill over and stain your stone-cold image; one youâve maintained for far too long.
But Felix is your best friend. The only one that you should be comfortable being vulnerable about your feelings for Jisung with; for some reason all you canât bring yourself to be. Before you can get a grip on your emotions tears are streaming down your face and falling onto the cold metal surface under you in small puddles.Â
A sympathetic sigh leaves Felixâs lips as he tries to gain your attention, âHey.â
Inhaling deeply, you face him â mascara strewn across your face in black streaks and eyes nearly bloodshot. Youâve held this in for far too long. Only a double would tire you out and exhaust you enough to cry on the clock. Thank god itâs a rainy day, no customers ever come in on rainy days.
Or at least, no customers usually come in on rainy days. It's not until you hear the bells on the front door ring that youâre wiping your eyes, whipping around to greet whoever was entering.
And then you see him, standing there as he shakes out his umbrella, a bouquet of sunflowers in his hand.
And he sees you; mascara running down your face and tears staining your cheeks. Heâs early. Your stomach turns at the sight of him, emotions not stable enough to handle carry a normal conversation like Â
âY/N,â his voice is quiet, worry dripping in his tone as your name leaves his lips. But you canât face him right now, not like this.
Your feet move faster than you mind, standing up and rushing to the back to avoid him. Jisung doesnât follow you, just stands there and watches you walk away, solemn and worried that heâs done something.Â
Itâs not until Felix is rising from his seat and pacing over to him that heâs brought back to reality.
âJisung...â he starts, hands coming up slowly to console him, âI donât think itâs a good idea for you to be here right now.â
âWh-whatâs wrong?â His lip worries between his teeth, eyes glossy as he stares at the door you just closed behind you. Heâs looking at it intently, mind flooding with worry, wishing so badly that the door will just fly open, and youâll tell him what was going on. In the back of his mind, he knows that you wonât, at least not for now. Talking about emotions has never been your strong suit, and chances of that changing at this moment are at an all-time low.
Felix is unsure how to answer him, caught in between not wanting to lie and keeping your feelings private. He canât speak for you; but heâs scared that saying nothing could just make this whole situation worse.
His mouth gapes as he searches for a response to his question, lips opening and closing while he hums to himself.
The umbrella hanging from Jisungâs hand drops with a crash, starling Felix as he jumps at the sudden sound. But before he is even able to speak, the bell to the front door is ringing again, and Jisung is walking away into the pouring rain.
The next day you wake up feeling numb. Youâve received several texts from Jisung the night before, none of which you have the energy to reply to or even look at for that matter.
The guilt riddling your body has become too much for you to handle. You left work last night without even saying goodbye to Felix. Heâs a good enough friend and coworker to know that what youâre going through is more important than working the counter at an coffee shop.Â
After Jisung left, Felix came back and let you know; he almost had to break down the door to the backroom in order for you to let him in. He told you to go home, get some rest and that youâd talk tomorrow.
But after waking up the last thing you want to do is talk about Jisung, it hurts enough just thinking about him.
Every time you thought about how your arrangement was supposed to end in just a few days you felt sick. You have worked so hard to open up just to build your walls back up again. And now youâre back at square one.
When you agreed to be Jisungâs girlfriend you did not expect to fall for him like this. Heâs Jisung for godâs sake. Heâs your personal diary, heâs the one who knows all the shit that nobody else does. And heâs the only one that listens to all the dumb shit you have to say that no one else cares about.
Feelings ruin everything. Love sucks, and you knew this before you agreed. You agreed under the circumstances that Jisung could show you that relationships could be fun; not under the circumstances that he would make you fall in love with him,
And the more that you think about it, maybe you were always in love with him. Maybe you always had these feelings for him, but they were trapped in the tight bonds of friendship that your subconscious never let you out.
But none of that even mattered now. The deal had to be off, and you need to distance yourself from Jisung before you are hurt any worse. The longer this goes on the worse that you are going to feel when it's all over.
How are you supposed to go back to normal after this? Like is Jisung thinking that showing you how amazing relationships are, you won't fall for him or something? Or does his true plan consist of making you fall in love with him, just to string you along like every other girl he's dated?
Youâre trapped in the never-ending spiraling thoughts, soiling your image of Jisung with each new theory that crosses your mind. None of them are good. All of them paint him as a player, as someone who just used you.
But the little thump in your heart when you notice the sunflowers placed on your bedside table wants your mind to change. Your heart wants you to believe that Jisung feels something too, that throughout this arrangement he has seen a different side to you too â that heâs fallen for you just like you have for him.
It's a knock at your door that guides you out of your thoughts. The repetitive tapping at your front door that drags you out of bed. And when you check your peephole and it's no one else, but your small blonde best friend standing on your doorstep that has relief rushing through your system.
The door cracks open, Felix standing there with an umbrella in his hand â even though it was nearly 100Âș with clear skies.
âWhy are you still in your pajamas? It's noon.â
Suddenly, he pushes past you and invites himself into to your living room. Plopping down on your couch, Felix makes himself comfortable as he waits for you to join. You spin on your heels, an exhausted breath leaving your mouth as you pace over to him, plopping down on the next cushion over.
âWhy the umbrella?â Your brow furrows as he hands it over. You take it though, still confused behind the meaning of the object that you're holding and where it came from.
âItâs Jisungâs.â
You nearly drop it as his name leaves his lips. The name causes your stomach to tighten, mouth-drying instantly as emotions well behind your eyes.
âWhy?â Is all you can mutter out. Why was he giving it to you, why is he here, and why did he have it?
âYou need to bring it back to him.â He says sternly, his eyes locked on you as he waits for you to look back at him. But youâre too focused on the umbrella placed gently in your hands, tracing your finger over every wire and the soft rubber handle.
âI canât.â Your words come out in a whisper, breath light and airy as you sigh, sinking your body back into the couch cushions. Giving the umbrella back to Jisung will mean that you have to go see him. And if you see him, heâs going to want to talk to you about last night, then question you about why you havenât been returning his texts. No. You will not be giving Jisung his umbrella back.
âY/N,â your name leaves his mouth gently, a sigh following it before he reaches for you, rubbing your arm comfortingly before continuing, âI think you need to talk to him.â
âFelix you know I canât do that.â
Youâre serious in your words. Not that you donât want to talk to Jisung. You most definitely want to â and if you could, you would. But you canât. There are too many emotions involved. The wound is fresh and seeing him would be rubbing salt right into it.
âY/N,â he sighs, this time more forceful, like heâs trying to get something across to you but it's going right over your head. âTalk to him. Please.â
âYou know Iâm going to end up hurt if I do.â Tears well in your eyes as the words croak from your throat. It's dry and scratchy, full of fear and anxiety.
âI think youâd be surprised,â he mumbles, his eyes instantly widening on realizing the words that just escaped. Eyes wide with confusion, youâre begging him to go on, but if he does then Jisung wonât be the only one in deep shit right now. It's not up to Felix to tell you what he knows this time.Â
âWhat do you mean Iâll be surprised?â
âI have to go,â he stands instantly, motioning to the umbrella, âand you need to bring this back.â
With a slight ruffle to your hair, Felix is giving you a supporting smile and waving goodbye. And youâre left alone once again â just you and Jisungâs blue umbrella.
It takes a lot of courage to get ready today. You make sure to take your sweet time rummaging through your closet, flipping through articles of clothing for the better half of an hour. At the end, you opt to go with a pair of sweatpants and an old t-shirt. There isn't enough energy in your body to put on anything else, and you know youâll just want to curl back up in bed once you get home. Sweatpants are safe, and safe is just what you need.
No makeup today either. If things are anything like youâre expecting, your makeup will just end up ruined anyway. It's your better judgment to shower though, youâve neglected to take one after work last night; opting to just bury yourself under your covers as soon as you got back. But today is a new day. And with a fresh shower and your comfiest pair of sweatpants, you are about as ready as youâll ever be to get your heart broken into a billion pieces.Â
Umbrella in hand, you step out onto your front steps, relishing in your last few moments of ignorant bliss before making your way to Jisungâs. You immediately regret your wardrobe decision as the sun beats down on your frame, the humidity making you feel sticky and gross â your favorite pants are no match for this heat.
But youâre on your way to your destination anyway, the drive feeling longer and more drawn out than normal. Jisung didnât live that far away from you, but the ride there still felt like an eternity with each theoretical scenario passing your mind.Â
Dragging your feet, you make your way to the front steps of his house. Youâve been here a million times, but today is different. From now on, every time you drive past this place all youâll know is heartache.
You brush yourself off, taking a deep breath before bringing your hand up and pushing the doorbell. The sudden ringing sound startles you, even though you have every indication that itâs coming â youâre just too nervous and jumpy for your own good.
Footsteps approach the door, your stomach tightening more and more with the muffled pitter-patter of footsteps. Youâre praying to God that itâs his mom, hoping that Jisung just so happens to be out â even though his car is in plain sight parked just a few meters away from you. Wishful thinking, you suppose.
When the door to his house opens, you struggle to maintain your composure. Heâs dressed similarly to you; a pair of sweats and an old sports t-shirt that has definitely seen better days.
âHi.â
âHi.â
His eyes are sunken in, dark circles dragging underneath his eyes and his lips pulled downwards. He looks like a sad puppy, his dark hair all scruffy and sticking up in each direction â probably from him running his hands through it so many times.Â
âI came to give you this,â you extend the umbrella out before you. He nods before taking hold of it, his hand far at the opposite end making sure not to keep his distance. The more you look at him, the more sorry you feel for dodging his texts. He looks like he hasnât slept a wink, and youâre afraid itâs all because of you.
âOh...uh, thanks,â he struggles to make eye contact with you, looking down at the object in his hand.Â
Itâs awkward, uncomfortable, and you canât seem to find the words to say to break this strange tension between the two of you. Heâs acting weird, shifting his weight back and forth but not moving away to close the door. His mind is racing once again â contemplating whether or not to just invite you in or leave it at that.
But with every aching bone in his body, he musters up the courage to lift his head, looking you directly in the eyes. Their dark like his, definitely from the lack of sleep you had the night before. Your mouth is turned downward too; hands fiddling together to try and distract yourself.
âD-Do you wanna come in?â He stutters, stepping aside slowly as he gestures towards his house. He suddenly worries when you donât respond right away, taking a second to contemplate if this is a good idea or not. Ripping off the band-aid is never easy, but it needs to be done.
âSure,â is the word that you decide on â hoping that it doesnât make you seem disinterested or too desperate to talk. Maybe heâs just being kind though. Maybe itâs an empty offer, something that you say when youâre trying to be nice, but subconsciously hope that they wonât take you up on it. Like when you offer to share your food with someone, but youâre really hungry. You do it to be nice, not because you actually want to split the delicious looking burger and fries on your plate.
He leads you inside and to his bedroom. It looks the same as always, but it feels different. It still smells like him though, the comforting woodsy scent of pine and mahogany that he always reaches for. But that comforting scent is anything but comfortable. Youâre frozen in place, unsure if you should sit on his bed and make yourself at home, much like every other time in the past. For now you just stand in the doorframe, waiting for him to tell you to take a seat, just like any polite guest would. A guest. You have never felt like a guest in his home before, or around Jisung in general. But that imaginary wall between the two of you is standing tall and sturdy, and suddenly the two of you are reverted back to being strangers.
You watch as he toys with something on his desk, his fingers dancing from object to object and sifting through papers to look busy. The point of it â unknown to you but to him, heâs buying time. Trying to think of the first thing to say, what to ask, or if you even wanted to talk. Maybe you only agreed to come inside to be nice. Maybe you were too worried about hurting his feelings if you said no. But alas, here you are, standing awkwardly in his doorway as he shuffles around his room, his brain flooding with thoughts â but his mouth can not form them into audible words.
âIâm sorry for ignoring your texts.â
Your voice catches his attention, dropping whatever paper heâs looking at now and turning his gaze to you. Youâre sunken into yourself, your chest thumping with anxiety as his eyes begin to wander your frame. Not in a âIâm checking you outâ manner though; more of a âyou look so sad and I donât know what to say to you right nowâ kind of way.Â
Itâs true though, he doesnât know what to say â which is why heâs staring at you, hoping the right words would just pop up and he didnât have to use any brain-power at all. He doesnât want to say âit's okay,â because it's not. You never ignore his texts, and that alone tells him enough about what's going on. You are upset at him.
âWhat did I do wrong, Y/N?â
His words sound accusatory but his tone is soft, gentle and full of worry. Eyes swollen and looking like they are about to fill to the brim with tears, his sight is focused on you; now not able to look away.
âI-I donât knowâŠâ
Your answer is honest. You donât know if his intentions are dirty. Yeah, thatâs what you thought initially, but looking at him with such hurt written all over his face tells a different story.Â
Jisung is silent, unsure of what more he can do or say to make you talk to him. He canât force you to open up, he never has and he never will â thatâs always been his rule. Everything youâve shared with him has been on your own terms and conditions. Jisung has always been here to be your listening ear, but he never prys.
âDo you want to talk about it?â
His voice is soft, eyes full of sympathy as he holds himself together. Those were the words he has been looking for. Now the ball is in your court and youâll have to be the one leading the conversation. Itâs just what he needed to figure this shit out.
âI-I donât know.â
âY/N,â he sighs as he drops himself down onto the mattress, âI shouldnât have to say this for you to know it, but you know you can talk to me about anything, right?â
You do know that. You really, really do. But this time things are different. Is he expecting you to just come out and speak your truth like there wonât be consequences? No, he wonât push you to tell him anything you donât want to. But the worry in his eyes and clammy hands are begging for you to just let it out so he can stop being in the dark.
You sigh out an âokayâ before sitting down beside him.Â
Rip the band-aid off Y/N. Quick and painless.
His eyes narrow, almost to a squint, staring right through you in hopes of reading your thoughts. Your expression is nothing but blank as you try your best to gain some sort of composure. Do you just speak up and spill your guts? The words replay in your mind over and over until your thoughts are beat down and misshapen.Â
You can picture his face when you say it; disgusted with a trace of disappointment and some confusion spread into the mix. Or maybe heâll laugh at how pathetic you were, catching feelings for your fake boyfriend.
Thatâs it. Thereâs no way you can tell him. It would be much easier to just get up and leave. Tell him to pretend like none of this ever happened and that you needed some time to cool off. A few months maybe, or maybe you could just ghost him entirely.Â
âY/N?â
The sound of his voice breaks you out of your toxic thoughts, and his chocolate brown eyes bring you back down to earth. You canât just leave him in the dust. Heâs looking at you like youâre the only thing that exists. Things will be okay, right?
âSorry, sorry,â you exhale deeply as you calm your thoughts; shifting the nasty scenarios out and accepting that whatever happens after this conversation is your fate.Â
âJisung, I-I guess I wasnât expecting this boyfriend-girlfriend thing weâre doing to go like this.â
His brow quirks at your words, confusion riddling his expression as his eyes narrow. With a tilt of his head, heâs pushing you to continue, visibly riddled with your choice of words.
âSwear youâll be honest when I ask you this?â You question him, your hand moving closer to his as you lean in slightly. Heâs like a magnet, you canât help yourself from moving closer; even though the proximity of the two of you is clouding your thoughts and you can feel your heart beginning to swell.
He nods in response to your question, his eyes full of concern as he waits for you to continue, âWhy did you ask me to do this thing?â
He knows that a question like this was coming, only if he could have prepared for it. But he didnât, so his throat is left dry and scratchy as his mouth opens, only to stutter a bit before closing it back up. No coherent thoughts or words are able to escape his lips, just nonsense mumbling that caught himself off guard.
With a deep breath, he closes his eyes, regaining his composure before he can face you again. He agreed to be honest, and if honesty is what you want, honesty is that youâll get.
âIâm sorry.â Thatâs all that he can say.Â
Oh no. This is exactly what you were expecting before you came here. Heâs gonna tell you that he didnât mean to mess with your emotions, that he felt you catching feelings and got carried away. That heâs sorry that he ruined your friendship and played you like a violin all at once.
âMe too.â
You donât know why youâre apologizing, but you are. It feels wrong. Absolutely utterly, and undoubtedly wrong. Apologizing for your own feelings is not something that you are okay with. Especially when he made you fall for him like this. Okay so maybe thinking that is giving him too much power, but who the hell takes you out on dates for nearly 2 weeks straight just to laugh about it later. How can he expect you to not catch feelings for him? With his deep voice and fluffy hair that always hangs in front of his eyes, that little giggle he has when he finds something amusing. Everything about him was attractive. And youâve fallen for it all. Hard.
âWait, why are you sorry?â
A scoff escapes your mouth unintentionally, but itâs well deserved. âFor being the idiot to fall for a guy that was playing her, I guess.â
You canât look at him any longer, so your eyes fall to your lap, staring at your chipped nail polish and dirty fingernails instead of reading whatever dumb expression he has now. But if you just took a second to look up, youâd notice the widening of his eyes, how his fingers are beginning to shake and his mouth gape.Â
âWh-What?â
âDonât make me say it again Jisung, I donât feel like sounding stupid one more time.â
âNo no I heard you, it's just,â his eyes slam shut, angry at himself that he let things get this far without keeping you in the loop.Â
Youâve been telling him that you hate love for years now. After hearing it so many times, heâd just given up on the thought of you. Maybe if he said something before you went through all those shitty guys things could have been different. But heâs let this go on for far too long, and now youâre the one that was paying the price.Â
âY/N I have feelings for you.â
Your neck nearly breaks with how fast your head snaps up. Heâs the one looking away now, his cheeks a bit rosy as he tries to hide himself. He isnât doing a very good job though, his hair is only shadowing his eyes and you can clearly see the way heâs nervously chewing on his lip; a cute habit you have grown fond of these past couple of weeks.
If he didnât look like he does right now, youâd assume he was messing around. But you know Jisung. You know his small little gestures and what they mean by now. You know when heâs being serious and when heâs telling a lie. He can look someone dead in the eye and lie to them, but when he tells the truth, he becomes shy and worried that heâs said the wrong thing.Â
âWhy didnât you tell me?â You ask softly, gently reaching for his hand. The subtle contact makes him flinch, reacting by pulling your hand away. But his eyes meet your sympathetic ones, sparkling just like they always do, and he knows what he wants.
Jisungâs hand reaches back for yours, lacing his fingers through yours before giving your hand a light squeeze. âYou hate relationships,â he chuckles lightly, the mood of the room instantly shifting as the laughter leaves his lips.Â
âI hated the ones that werenât with you,â you correct him, but your voice comes across as just a whisper. Heâs close enough to hear though, a blushing grin forming on his face as you shyly look away. His heart flutters when he hears it, a million butterflies erupting in his tummy all at once.
âI hated the ones that werenât with you too,â he coos, his eyes wide and sparkling as he looks at you with such adoration.Â
Time moves in slow motion as his hand meets your cheek, your eyes look deeply into his chocolate ones as he moves in closer. As your eyelids flutter shut his tongue runs across his bottom lip, wetting the surface before closing the distance between you. Finally.
And in that moment youâre at peace. Everything you thought youâve ever hated, love, relationships, and maybe Jisung for a hot second, are the only things that you long for. The 14 days donât have to be over, and your days no longer have to be counted. When youâre with Jisung youâre happy, youâre comfortable, and you're confident that he can give you what you have always deserved â but have never gotten.Â
His lips move against yours in slow, languid motions, his large hands holding you close like heâs holding on for dear life. But you wonât leave even if you want to, not now, not after all this.Â
Slowly, Jisung shifts his weight and you move in succession. Heâs laying you down on his bed, gently climbing over you without breaking the kiss. Things are becoming more heated now, you can feel it as his hungry lips devour your own. Your chest heaves up to meet his, your back arching off the mattress as his hands begin to scour your body. The heat pooling in between your legs is growing, an aching sensation overwhelming your core as your own hands reach up to rake through his long, fluffy hair. And you can tell he wants you too, the thin fabric of his sweatpants doing little to conceal the growing erection pressing against your thigh.Â
You canât help but let out a steep moan as his hips begin to grind into yours. Needy groans fall past his lips and onto yours as you roll your hips upwards to meet his small ruts.Â
In a leisurely motion, Jisungâs body is moving upwards, his knee finding a place between your legs as he brings himself up to a kneeling position. You chase his lips the entire way there, sitting up straight to be sure the contact doesnât vanish, too consumed by your need for him to leave his lips.
And then his needy hands are running along the waistband of your sweats, fiddling with the tie before breaking your heated kiss. âIs this okay?â His words come out in a whisper, his eyes searching yours for any signs of doubt, but all he sees is lust.
âYes,â you confirm, out of breath from making-out for so long without coming up for air. The lightheaded feeling taking over you goes unnoticed though, and quite frankly youâre too caught up in Jisung to care.
Quickly, he rids you of your pants, looking back up at you for confirmation about your underwear. With an affirmative nod heâs removing those too, leaving you completely bare from the waist down as he stands over you fully clothed.
But soon heâs ridding himself of his own clothing, his shirt being pulled at the nape of his neck as he discards it across the room. Heâs leaning back down to you, hungry for the feeling of your lips. He misses it, even though it's been less than a minute since heâs last felt your smooth lips on his.Â
You wonât open your eyes to see, but with the shuffling movements and shaky connection between your mouths you can tell Jisung is stripping himself of any remaining clothing he has on. Heâs needy, unable to wait any longer to get down to business, heâs already waited long enough.
Youâre the one who breaks the kiss this time, too curious to see what heâs sporting down below for your own good. But you are not disappointed once you see it â heâs long and girthy; the pigment a shade or two darker from his skin tone than the rest of his body. Your thoughts are wandering, wondering what it's like to have him inside of you; dreaming about what he feels like. Arousal pools at your core, mouth salivating as your daydreams linger.
âLike what you see?â Jisung chuckles. You barely notice that youâve been staring, eyes wide and focused on the hardened dick before you, which is probably a bit uncomfortable for him.Â
âSorry!â You cringe at yourself lightly, covering your eyes in embarrassment in fear that you just ruined the mood youâve worked too hard to create.
âDonât apologise,â he smiles as he grabs your wrists, moving them away from your round eyes. Scrunching your nose in displeasure, you catch your lip in between your teeth, mentally face palming at how weird youâre being.
He couldnât blame you though, it was taking everything in him not to gawk at you. It was the first time youâve seen eachother naked. Bathing suits did little for your imagination, not that you had even thought about Jisung this way before.
But he eases your nerves by coming down face level with you, reaching for your shirt and pulling it up over your head. You look at him with wide eyes, taking in each part of him as he caresses your body gently. Heâs in awe of you like this. So relieved that youâre finally his, that he has you like this.
Nimble fingers dance down your body, landing at your core as he runs one up your slit, collecting your arousal on his fingertip. An impressed smirk grows slowly on his face, âI canât believe youâre this wet already,â he hums. âAll for me.âÂ
His eyes remain focused on your center, devouring it with his eyes as his hands hold steady on your thighs. You canât help but grow slightly embarrassed, dripping with arousal so early on though heâs barely touched you. A lump forms in your throat causing you to swallow thickly â this doesnât go unnoticed by Jisung.
A concerned expression crosses his face, brow furrowing as he moves his hands upward to settle on your waist. âHey,â his voice is soft, gentle and full of worry, âeverything okay?âÂ
âJust nervous,â you answer, a fake smile showing on your face to try and combat your own emotions.
It is no secret that Jisung is a bit more experienced than you are in bed. He knows that, you know that, and that is enough to turn you into a nervous wreck. Leave it to your own thoughts to ruin the moment.
âWe donât have toâŠâ
âNo!â Your voice comes out a little too eager, a bit loud, shocking Jisung. His eyes widen in response, body jolting from the impact of your tone. âNo,â you say more gently this time, âI want to.â
You did want to â you just have to get over your own nerves first. Lucily, Jisung didnât mind and was willing to guide you through it.
With a reassuring smile plastered across his face, he laces his fingers through yours. As you lock eyes, you nod him onward, giving him the go-ahead to continue. He moves languidly, his fingers moving back down to trace your slit once more. The sensation makes you tense, the nerves tingling through your body making it difficult for you to calm down.Â
But with a reassuring squeeze of his hand to yours, youâre taking a deep breath. Closing your eyes as you lie your head backwards onto his pillowcase. The smell of him consumes you, relaxing you effectively as his fingers meet the entrance of your core.
Shivers run through your body as he dips one finger inside. Your arousal acts as a natural lube, letting his finger glide gracefully into you. You gasp at the sensation, eyes rolling back into your head as he begins caressing your walls. His finger moves swiftly in and out of your core, his other hand still locked with yours to guide you through.
With your body finally relaxing, Jisung is able to add another finger into the mix. The extra pressure makes you shudder for a moment, taking a little to adjust to the greater size inside of you. Thankfully the mild discomfort subsides, and heâs able to pump his fingers in and out once more.Â
Heâs making sure to watch each of your expressions, growing harder and harder just from watching your face contort in bliss. With each of his movements you bite down harder onto your lip, focusing on him and him only.Â
âYouâre doing so well,â he praises as his thumb rubs circles over your hand soothing you. You can feel your heart swell at his words, heat beginning to rise to your cheeks.Â
In one swift motion, Jisung begins to separate his fingers, stretching your walls as his digits move in scissor-like motions inside you. âFuck,â you mumble, hips jutting forward in reaction.Â
A steep moan leaving your lips as he brings his fingers back together, just to extend them once more. Your body is quickly getting used to the pressure, begging for more as you roll your hips.
He can sense that youâre eager from your movements alone. With one final squeeze, his hand is leaving yours. The empty feeling in your palm is unpleasant. But once you open your eyes and notice heâs using it to palm himself, his fingers groping around his length and beginning to pump slowly, that empty feeling is replaced with something else.Â
Your mouth salivates with desire, hungry for the feeling of him inside of you. Heâs aroused you enough, and youâre too eager to feel him for your own good.
âJisung,â you moan, âfuck me please.â
His cock jumps in reaction to your words, his chest heaving as his breath catches in his throat. Never in his life did he expect to hear those words come out of your mouth â but he wouldn't mind hearing it again.
âHmm?â He hums, knowing damn well what you said but being greedy enough to pretend that he didnât. You whine in response, your legs shaking on the bed in a mini temper-tantrum.
âPlease,â you drag out, âplease fuck me.â
Your words are music to his ears. He removes his fingers from your dripping cunt, grabbing the backs of your knees to pull you closer to him and hike your legs up over his hips.
âAnything for you.â
Complying to your wish, he lines the tip of his cock up with your entrance. The feeling of his smooth head against your core is enough to make you moan, your head thrown back to expose the soft skin of your neck.
Jisung takes this as an opportunity to leave his own mark behind, leaning down to attach his lips to your skin. You gasp as his teeth graze your skin, his plump lips sucking harshly before his tongue is swiping over the area to soothe it.Â
But your eyes open once heâs beginning to pull away to look at you. His eyes are dark, full of lust mixed with adoration, a sigh of relief leaving his chest as he gazes down at you under him. Thereâs a lot going on in his head right now. Of all the emotions swirling around, the thing heâs most focused on is how lucky he is to have you.
And before you know it, heâs leaning down. Pressing a chaste kiss to your lips, making you smile. One more kiss is left on your forehead before he's pulling back, securing the position of your legs on his hips.Â
And then heâs realigning himself with your core, pushing past your entrance and slowly descending into the depths of your pussy. Heâs moving slowly, taking his time as he thrusts into you. The delicious stretch is unfamiliar, but it's not uncomfortable â like you were made just for him. A simultaneous groan leaves your lips as he bottoms out, the tip of his cock pressing deep into you on a spot thatâs gone untouched.Â
He hums a sigh of contempt before pulling back, only to rock his hips into you once again. Your velvety walls welcome him delightedly, soft whimpers leaving your lips once he bottoms out again.
âY/N,â your name leaves his lips in a low grunt, the bones of his pelvis driving into your skin as he begins to pick up his pace. In reaction you clench down on him, orgasm beginning to loom overhead with each movement of his hips.
Desire fills your senses as you roll your hips over to meet his thrusts. His movements are slow and intentional, making sure to bottom out each time to watch you squirm over his dick. He loves how your jaw drops each time his tip presses against your g-spot, knowing just when he hits it each time.
Jisungâs teeth are barred, sweat gathering at his brow as his dark fluffy hair sticks to his face. Heâs trying to hold himself back, the overwhelming urge to finish just in reach, but he doesnât want to stop. So his hands roam your body to try and distract him, his palms caressing up the sides of your torso as your back bridges into him. The feeling of hot breath fans over your face with each sigh he lets out.Â
But the tightening knot in your stomach is threatening to snap with every movement of his hips. It's getting harder and harder to hold on with the power of his thrusts growing stronger.
âJisung,â you whine, âso closeâ your hands find his back, fingernails dragging down his spine in attempts to ground yourself. Jisungâs face contorts as your nails pierce his skin, leaving lines of red scratches down the length of his posterior.
The stretch from his length and his rhythmic motions sends your senses into overdrive. Squeezing your eyes shut and grasping onto the sheets underneath you, you can taste the brink of your orgasm. Jisung is focused; his grip on your thighs strong and his face contorted with bliss. But all you can think about is how stupid you could have been if you had decided to just cut him out. What matters is that youâre here with him now, and the thought of that is enough to push you over the edge.Â
Your breath hitches in your throat, stomach twisting and turning as your pussy throbs repeatedly around his member. Emotions running high, three words almost slip past your lips, but with the small amount of strength you can muster up, you hold them back. Another time, some time that isn't so lust filled like this one.
Jisungâs thrusts are growing sloppy. His grip on your legs tightening as his lip is caught between his teeth. And with just a few quick thrusts, heâs coming undone inside of you. White, hot spurts of cum paint your walls, filling you up and making you feel so unbelievably full.Â
Youâve always felt close to Jisung â he knew everything about you and vice versa; but this time was different. The way his hands settled on your legs, bringing them down gently after finishing. How his eyes are becoming so soft as he looks at you, a lazy grin pulling at his lips. Youâve never felt closer to Jisung as you do in the moment. As his body collapses next to yours, pulling you in and holding you close as you recover from your highs, youâre completely at peace.
âSorry I got carried away, I guess I should have asked if youâre on birth control still,â he laughs, burying his face into the crook of your neck.Â
âDonât worry, I am,â you chuckle alongside him.
Your naked bodies tangle together, his leg weaving its way through yours to be as close to you as possible. Heâs intoxicated by you, closing his eyes as he rests against your body in complete bliss. Now that he has you this close he never wants to let go; and neither do you.
âCan I tell you something?â His voice is soft, whisper like but still holding confidence; his tone never falters.
âAnything.â
âI love you, Y/N.â
Butterflies erupt in your tummy, your heart thudding in your chest as heat rises to your cheeks. He loves you. It's not that friendship kind of love anymore; it's the relationship kind. The same kind that makes your heart skip a beat and body riddle with every emotion in the book. The kind that keeps you up all night thinking about â but also helps you fall asleep, knowing heâll be there in the morning.
And all of a sudden it seems so stupid that you were fighting those words back in the heat of the moment just a few minutes ago. He felt it too, you always knew that.
âI love you, Jisung.â
Being in love is a dumb concept. All guys suck, relationships are stupid and love is a social construct that you didnât feel like conforming to. There was absolutely no one that you would waste your time on, until Jisung came around. What you had been looking for your entire life has always been right infront of your eyes â you were just too dumb to see it.
Maybe love is alright, after all.

Would you write something where Jiang Fengmian is Wei Wixian's biological father because Wei Changze was a trans man?
ao3
The woman that men called Cangse Sanren, a title she accepted out of lack of anything better to use, had any number of suitors, but her favorite one was one that never formally approached her to state his suit â neither the one who scolded her because she broke all the rules, nor the one who idealized her for it, but the one who made her laugh about it.
His name was Wei Changze.
She could tell that he liked her from the way he blushed when she smiled at him, the way he tried to spend time with her whenever he could â often in the company of others, but not always.
âI think itâs time for me to get married,â she said to him as they walked along the waterfront. All her other suitors had been busy with work or play or other things; only Wei Changze had the time â or the strength of will â to abandon all of that to keep her company. She liked that, and knew herself to be a bit selfish that way; she was not willing to share her lover with anyone, least of all a sect.
Wei Changzeâs eyes revealed the stab of misery, but he forced a smile on his face. âCongratulations,â he said. âThe man you have chosen to wed must be a very lucky man indeed.â
âI think he is,â she agreed, and tucked her hand in his. âWould you like to visit the astrologer to pick a date, or shall I pick one for us?â
Wei Changzeâs surprised face, she decided, was extremely charming.
He stuttered a great deal, tried to say some denial, but she would have none of it.
âYou like me, donât you?â she asked, and he affirmed. âThen marry me.â
âThere are things you donât know about me,â he said wretchedly. âI could never please you as a man should â we would never have children ââ
âI feel moderately confident that pleasure will not be a problem,â she said. âAnd my fortune says that I will have both no children and several, which to me suggests adoption is a perfectly plausible future. Did you really think I would care that you bleed by the moon, as I do?â
Wei Changze looked startled, and she tapped her nose, reminding him of how well she could track blood during the night-hunts they went on together.
âSo, with that aside, do you have any further objections?â she asked. âIf not, let me know and I will catch a fish and use its bones to cast a fortune for us so that we may wed on an auspicious day, and then go travel the world with no one but ourselves and each other.â
She could see the yearning in his eyes, not only for her but for the life she described, and after some time he agreed.
Her other suitors were not pleased, and one most displeased of all â though she couldnât really blame him, given that she was robbing him both of the woman he was chasing and the man heâd thought would be at his side forever.
She was very magnanimous about it. She didnât even complain when Wei Changze showed up at her door, stinking of men and guilt and regrets.
âHe was yours for a long time,â she said gently when her beloved tried, with tears in his eyes, to apologize for the transgression. âIt is difficult to let go of the old ways, and accept the new. Consider it a gift of farewell to him, and a gift of new beginnings to me.â
âHow can it be a gift to you?â Wei Changze asked, wiping his eyes and kissing her. âForgive me. It will not happen again.â
She wasnât sure why it wouldnât be considered a gift to her, but it seemed rude to mention, and it wasnât until months later that she learned that most people couldnât tell so quickly that a child had caught.
âWhat did you think I meant?â she asked, puzzled, as he paced around the small room at the inn they had rented â they were far away from Yunmeng now, traveling together with no company beyond a donkey. âAnyway, you donât need to worry. Itâll be an easy burden, an easy labor.â
âHow can you tell?â he asked, diverted. âYou didnât even throw sticks or look at bones for that.â
She shrugged, unable to explain that he simply smelled healthy, and the baby quiet. âA quiet quickening makes for a loud baby,â she finally said. âWe should be prepared for a troublemaker.â
âWe should be prepared to return to Yunmeng! This child is the heir to Yunmeng Jiang!â
âNo, he isnât,â she said peaceably. âHeâs our son.â
âSon â wait, a boy? Really? Thatâs wonderfulâŠno, wait, thatâs worse. You donât understand. My lover â his position â our son is the eldest child of Yunmeng Jiang.â
âHis sister is older.â
Wei Changze stopped pacing to stare at her.
âDidnât you know?â she asked. âThatâs why the spider of Meishan Yu is so desperate to wed him.â
Wei Changze sat down abruptly, the bed beneath him creaking in protest at the sudden weight. âHe never said,â he said, sounding numb. âHe never â I didnât know. How old is the girl?â
âNearly three.â
âFuck.â A moment of silence. âIf Iâd known, I wouldnât have â not even as a goodbye!â
âThatâs probably why he didnât say,â she said wisely. âAt any rate, weâve been gone for months â Sect Leader Jiang should have already accepted her suit, and sheâs the one bearing the heir. A legitimate son always trumps one born out of marriage, thatâs how humans do it â isnât that right?â
âYes, well done, correct description,â he said, still sounding stunned. âI guess youâre rightâŠbut heâll guess, if he sees him. Heâll know.â
âSo what? We wonât go back to Yunmeng. He wonât be able to do anything about it, no matter what he knows.â
âBut â YunmengâŠâ He fell silent for a moment. And then â âCan you read a fortune for the child?â
âThis far before birth?â she asked, startled. âNo. Itâs bad luck. We donât even know what their astrological signs will be.â
âPlease,â Wei Changze said, and heâd really never asked her for anything before. âPlease. I need to know. Yunmeng is my home; I need to know â what Iâm giving up. If itâs worth it.â
She still thought it was a bad idea, but she rolled up her robes and waded into the river to catch a turtle using nothing but her bare hands, snapping its neck and putting it over a fire to read the cracks in its shell.
She frowned at what she saw.
âWhat is it?â Wei Changze asked. His arms were wrapped around his belly.
âThe child will live, and shine like a star in the heavens,â she said. âA genius, for better or for worse.â
âThatâs good, isnât it?â
âSometimes. Not always.â She shook her head with a sigh. âThereâs bad news here, too. Tragedy.â
Death.
The child would save the world, one day, but the balance of all the heavensâ gifts was that he would grow up an orphan.
And after all that effort sheâd put into making herself a happy life, and even finding herself just the right lover, too!
They spoke about it several times over, never quite rising to the level of a fight, and in the end Wei Changze agreed to keep the child and abandon Yunmeng, and to live out the few years they would have with the child in peace and joy. When they died, the child would go to Yunmeng, and be raised there.
It was what they agreed.
And yet â
The time came, and Wei Changze died first before the vicious beastâs claws, throw himself in its path to protect her, and she â she didnât want to go. She liked her little Wei Ying, she liked her life, and, yes, she liked her lover, but her lover wasnât everything, had never wanted to be everything, to be the sun and moon and stars for her until she could not live without him.
Something ruthless stirred in her bones. Something dark and selfish, vicious and mean, the same thing that had made her elder martial brother go mad, years before, and become a pestilence on the world.
She didnât do that.
She just drew back her skin to show fang and claw, and she fought back, and she won.
âAn orphan,â she murmured later, holding her little Wei Ying in her arms that were still splattered with the blood of her kill. âRaised without his parentsâŠâ
She shook her head.
There were as many ways to fulfill a fortune as there were to skin a cat.
âIt had to be one of us,â she said in the direction of Yunmeng Jiang. She canât quite bring herself to be apologetic about it. âAnd I picked you.â
At least the Violet Spider would make an excellent regent sect leader on behalf of her young son, after her husband died.
In fact, maybe she should go see her, when it was over.
She did always like good company.

For the ship game: prime numbers for Lupin x Jigen!
HERE YOU GO GHOST, THIS WAS FIVE PAGES IN A GOOGLE DOC AND TOOK ME SEVERAL HOURS
Under a cut, allegedly, though mobile has been known to just IGNORE THAT. Sorry in advance if this gets goofed for anyone.
2) Who is always horny and will have sex at any time, in any place?
Lupin, obviously (and canonically). Just the horniest man you ever did see. Jigen knows what he wants and when he wants it, but he has difficulty keeping up with Don Juan Triumphant over there. Lupin is also far less picky about locations and times than Jigen is. Jigen still has a FEW standards, thank you, and also a stronger sense of self-preservation. Lupin sometimes tries to start shit in public or during a heist and Jigen is like âI REALLY, REALLY APPRECIATE THE SENTIMENT BUT CAN WE NOT.â The closest to public anything Jigen will put up with is bar bathroom/back-alley hookups, and he doesnât really tend to do that with Lupin or Goemon since they have secondary locations far more suited to such activity (or at least the damn Fiat, if nothing else). That said, Jigen is a spiteful bastard and gets a huge kick out of riling Lupin up over the walkie-talkie during jobs. He is more than happy to get jumped by his boss after they make it out and secure the loot.
3) Who is more into taking showers/baths together? Who tries to make it relaxing and who tries to make it sexy time?
Honestly, while I can totally see Lupin and Jigen doing this with their other partners, I have a harder time imagining the two of them doing this together and Iâm not sure why. I feel like these two on their own both like the privacy bathing gives them, whether itâs to clean wounds or decompress from a job.
On the occasions when they do bathe together, I feel like itâs an unspoken kind of thing, where the other person quietly slips in the tub/shower with them and they just donât bother protesting. I think Lupin is more likely to join Jigen in his bathing, but if Jigen is sleepy enough or lonely enough he might do the same. There is a lot of mutual appreciation of scars. Theyâve definitely smoked in the tub before (Intricate Ritualsâą). Lupin is probably more likely to get handsy, because Lupin, but two can play that game if Jigen is feeling it, and also Jigen gives Lupin a run for his money in the staring department. No hat to hide behind now.
Lupin has also 100% done the whole âHey Jigen, do you know ifâstop screaming, itâs meâdo you know if we have any more instant dashi? Goemonâs gonna slice up the sofa if I ruin soba night again.â
5) Who sleeps on the couch when they get into a fight?
Jigen, but to be fair, he canonically sleeps on the couch most nights (possibly to keep an eye on the door, possibly because he knows that place, at least, is always âacceptableâ for him to occupy). Itâs an odd night if you donât see Jigen out there with a glass and a bottle of scotch and an old movie on TV. The main difference is that if he and Lupin have been fighting, he wonât bother with the formality of a glass and the TV will be playing far louder or not at all.
7) [A] Who said âI love youâ first? And [B] who ends their arguments in a fight with âBecause I love youâ?
I hate to take the cowardâs way out here, but I think the answers are A) either one - depends on the headcanon/fic/version of the characters Iâm feeling that day, and B) both.
For A, theyâre both the sort of people to show their loveâtrue love/affection, not just flirtation/infatuation, LUPINâin action, not words. Lupin is a man of many words to a fault, generous with his verbal and physical affection, so Lupin has to find a way to make sure Jigen knows he means it and how he means it. He may rightly fear that Jigen wonât believe him (or else believe him but take it platonically) if he says âI love youâ to his face, so first heâll show him through every little action he can. Jigen is a man of few words to a fault, so saying personal stuff like that out loud is both a last resort and the point of no return. Getting him to say it at all, unambiguously, and while sober is like pulling teeth. Once one of them finally spits it out, though, I think the other is quick to reciprocate (again, if they manage to say it clearly and under good circumstances and not ambiguously/while drunk or wounded/etc. Theyâre both idiots and selective cowards so this is a big if). The mutual relief is palpable and immediately followed by sex, because theyâre both (horny) idiots and selective cowards who do not want to talk about Emotions and Personal Things any more than strictly necessary.
For B, ohhhh man, if it isnât that same emotional avoidance coming to bite them in the asses! Looks like talking about deep emotions is strictly necessary after all! You know itâs a Big Important Argument for them if this is what it comes to. This is going to tie in somewhat to the answers for 11, 17, and 23, so stay tuned. âBecause I love youâ coming from either of them should give the other pause, but if they are angry enough, theyâre both quite likely to storm off after that declaration anyway. Theyâll come back and have a real discussion later, but the shock or frustration of that arresting declaration dropped in the middle of an argument is something neither of them are great at dealing with. Hearing that from Jigen might be enough to stop Lupin in his tracks, but Lupin might also be so dead-set on something that heâll steamroll right over it even if he knows heâll regret it later. Hearing that from Lupin probably only makes Jigen angrier because of his awful self-esteem (see answers 11 and 23), and even if heâs been working on that, his instinct will be to snarl âYeah, rightâ and storm out the door. I like to think that one day they are able to get to the heart of the argument sooner (because this is almost always it) and work on the behaviors that worry the other so much, but alas, they are a mess.
11) Who makes fun of the other for having a crush on them, and who has to remind them that they are in a relationship?
Once again, either of them depending on the day.
As you mentioned in your JiGoe post, Jigen says it partly because he thinks itâs funny (âYou have a crush on me, Boss? Fuckinâ embarrassingâ) but also because heâs fishing for validation. His self-esteem/confidence in anything outside his shooting skills is shit and he still canât quite believe that Lupin isnât lying/he hasnât conned Lupin into something. This is rather overestimating his conning skills and underestimating his many good qualities, but, well, genuine, lasting affection is kinda new for him. Much to Jigenâs annoyance, Lupin figures out exactly what Jigenâs up to after the first few times and answers him seriously (and positively) instead of continuing the âjokeâ. Lupin loses patience for this particular tactic over time but I like to think that Jigen finally begins believing in the affection, too, so it comes up less and less and one day Jigen might actually play the quip straight without the self-deprecation. Ideally he would just take the damn compliment, but itâs LupJig and banter is one of their love languages.
When Lupin says it, he typically is playing the quip straight and fondly giving Jigen shit for showing an Emotion and motherFUCKER I just realized Jigen could probably be considered a tsundere. I hate this. ANYWAY. Jigen then immediately snarks back that yes, Lupin, considering weâve been travelling the world together and actively fucking for X years, itâd be damn awkward if I didnât by now.
13) Who initiates duets? and who is the better singer?
Lupin absolutely initiates duets, or rather, he tries to; whether or not Jigen actually chimes in is another matter entirely. Lupin is also the better singer by far (when heâs sober). He loves singing along to pop and rock in the car (âThis is the reason God invented America!â).
Much as it would please me personally to give Jigen a smooth operatic baritone, thereâs no way in hell he sounds good after smoking a pack a day for twenty-something years. I think Jigen can carry a tune and heâs a decent hummer and whistler, but his singing voice isnât spectacular.
Lupin occasionally succeeds in getting Jigen to join him in car karaoke, though as in all things, Lupin is much louder and more impassioned. Jigen frequently hums along under his breath, though, and Lupin loves hearing Jigenâs a cappella renditions of classical music (complete with hand motions).
When Queen starts becoming popular, car singalongs become much more involved because itâs MY silly headcanon and You Are Not Immune To Queen. Jigen cried the first time he heard âBohemian Rhapsodyâ and he will kill Lupin if he ever tells Goemon or, God forbid, Fujiko. When the four of them are in the car itâs a full-on Wayneâs World headbanging party. (Pops is the drunk guy they pick up along the way. Also, seeing Payless Shoe Source in this clip dealt me psychic damage.)
Lupin and Jigen (and Goemon) are the living embodiment of the drunk friends singing âSweet Carolineâ post, and Jigen is specifically this version of âSweet Carolineâ.
17) Who is more protective?
THAT IS THE QUESTION, HUH, GHOST? Jigenâs job and, to a certain degree, raison dâĂȘtre is protecting Lupin, but (to cheat slightly and quote your own DM to me), if you think Lupin wonât raze everything to the ground to keep Jigen (and the others) safe, you donât know him at all. They are this meme to the deepest of faults. They are both so desperately afraid of losing what they have (and in Lupinâs case, this is tinged with a bonus, even more concerning âwhat is hisâ) that they will go full self-sacrificing, scorched-earth policy. This is, in fact, my favorite reason for Lupin to do the worst thing he does: fake his own death to protect his partners. Lupin never stops to think that maybe, JUST MAYBE, he should trust his partners to fake grief and keep the secret long enough for whoeverâs on their tail to give up or let their guard slip. Lupin is willing to hurt them in an effort to protect them, so in that way, I suppose Lupin is the âmostâ âprotectiveâ. Jigenâs self-abasement to the point of unhesitating and perhaps even hasty sacrifice is painful, too, but Jigen would never dare go to the same level of deception (except in Goodbye, Partner, apparently? But 1) I havenât watched it yet and 2) while awful, I still feel like fake betrayal pales in comparison to very convincingly (AND MAYBE REPEATEDLY) faked death).
19) Who drives and who has the window seat?
They split driving duties, but Lupin genuinely loves driving and Jigen is more than happy to prop his feet on the Fiatâs dashboard and smoke or sleep the hours away.
23) Who thinks they are not good enough for the otherâs love? and whoâs more afraid of losing the other? Who thinks they keep messing up, only for the other to tell them they donât need to worry?
HERE WE GO AGAIN!!! I think the answer to all of these is ultimately Jigen, but thatâs not to say Lupin doesnât share the exact same worries.
Jigen has a very difficult time believing that his partnersâ love is genuine, and since Lupin is the one he knew first, thatâs where it first manifests. Jigen has had very, very few good romantic connections in his life (if any). He doesnât know what Lupin could possibly see in an older, prickly hired killer with a drinking problem and a head full of demons. Heâs willing to believe that Lupin keeps him around for his skills, for protection, and for sex, sure, but anything past that? Doubtful. This ties into the other two parts of the question: Jigen is afraid that if he fails in his sharpshooting or his protection, he will be cut out of the gang, or worse, Lupin will end up dead because Jigen slipped up. As mentioned in question 17, Jigen cannot bear to lose Lupin and he would never forgive himself if he believed it was somehow his fault. Accordingly, Jigen takes âfailureâ that exceeds his usual margin of error very seriously in the early days. Later, he is better about this, but the worst-case scenario still stands.
Lupin, on the other hand, has had plenty of romantic connections, some good, some bad, though it is perhaps telling that Fujiko is his longest romantic relationship other than Jigen. He is afraid that if he doesnât put on the worldâs greatest show at all times, no one will give a ratâs ass about some scrawny grandson of an old French thief (or the perhaps unwanted/disliked son of a ruthless crime lord, because I love that fanon for Lupin the Second). He must live up to and indeed surpass the previous Lupins, he must shower his partners in money and adventure, he must always, always come out on top no matter how south the plan goes, or else what is the point of him? It takes time for him to turn his persona off for more than a few seconds, to let the quieter, sometimes contemplative side that slips through the cracks come to rest out in the open. Years down the road, Jigen finally gets up the courage and the words to tell Lupin that he would love him no matter what he did or where he went, even if that was nothing and nowhere. And again, see question 17 re: losing Jigen.
29) Who does some crazy stunt to try and impress the other and who ends up driving them to the emergency room after it backfires?
Lupin is by far the most guilty of this. Heâs constantly pulling dumb shit, whether that be for World-Renowned Gentleman Thief reasons or just He May Be Stupid reasons. Case in point: the tunnel scene in The First, after which Jigen was duly impressed. Fortunately for Lupin, Lady Luck must be head over heels for him because the bastard keeps surviving, but sometimes even she canât save him from medical consequences. Jigen bulk-ordered âStupid Hurtsâ band-aids specifically for Lupin. Jigenâs bad choices are more likely to literally backfire on him, but Goemon more than makes up for Jigenâs slack in the Crazy Stunt department.

From a Justin Amler Facebook Post
It seems everyone is an expert on Jews these days...except Jews!
We have a 75 year old organisation called UNESCO continuously telling us about our history, even though we're 4000 years older than they are.
We have the majority of countries around the world telling us that our 3000 year old capital of Jerusalem isn't actually in Israel, even though none of their countries even existed for another few thousand years after we proclaimed ours.
We have a plethora of organisations who pretend they stand up for indigenous people, telling us - the indigenous people of Israel - that living in our own land is unacceptable.
We have the United Nations telling us what we need to do to achieve peace, even though they've never actually solved any conflicts themselves. We have the European Union telling us how labelling tomatoes is the road to peace, even as their own members tear each other apart.
We have the Arab world...oy the Arab world... telling us about human rights, while their streets are filled with blood and conflict.
So, at the risk of being controversial, let me, a Jew, tell you about the Jews... this ancient group of people that somehow have been hanging on to the knife-edge of history, as the pages of time turn.
We can be frustrating and full of it! We really can. Just ask John Kerry. Or Obama. Or Biden. Or the UN. Or the British. Or the French. Or the Arabs. Or the waiter at that restaurant, who had to move three tables across the floor, add six chairs and change the ingredients of the dish you just ordered.
We eat weird stuff, like gefilte fish, which is a mixture of all kinds of fish, along with road tar, goblinâs eyes and fairy dust. Itâs a bonafide crime against humanity!Â
We are argumentative. No, really we are. We argue day and night â and thatâs when we agree. When we donât agree⊠well...you might want to clear your calendar for the next month. You see, weâve been arguing since pretty much the beginning of time.Abraham argued with God. The Israelites argued with Moses. The prophets argued with the kings. The students argued with the rabbis and the rabbis argued with each other. And have you ever seen the Knesset??
We can be an insecure bunch, often at odds with the world and even with each other. We try a certain path â and if that fails, we try another path. And if that fails, we go back to the first path. Weâre still trying to find the right path â sometimes driven more by hope than conviction.
To our mothers, we are geniuses â destined for ultimate greatness â a definite catch! We can do no wrong. Imagine the disappointment when we do!
We are fitness freaks â and youâll always find us at the gym â or more likely at the coffee shop next door, having a slice of cheesecake and a cup of coffee â ready to hit that workout...after one more bite...In married life, the husband is number one. And whatever the husband says goes...straight out the window. Sometimes our wives ask our opinions, even though those opinions have already been decided.
We can be a people of contrasts and uncertainty. Weâre both left and right, and sometimes even extreme left and extreme right. We can be our own best friends and our own worst enemies. At times weâre a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Maybe thatâs why we call ourselves JewâŠish.
Every Jew in history has the answers to everything â according to himself. And I doubt thereâs a single one among us who isnât convinced they can do a better job than the Prime Minister of Israel, whoever it is this week.
We get criticised a lot, but despite what is said about us, the truth is that weâre our own strongest critics. Why do we get singled out among all the nations of the world, and denied the same rights as them â I donât know⊠Perhaps thatâs more for our critics to answer than ourselves. Because every nation that achieves victory on the battlefield get to dictate the terms for peace, except us. When we are victorious, we have to beg our enemies to accept peace. And yet we are the ones called warmongers, even though there is no people in history who have sacrificed more to achieve peace.
Peoples have come and gone throughout history, yet weâre still here. Because unlike some others we value life too much, and we cling to it with everything we have. As long as there is the smallest breath in us, the faintest light, and the tiniest slimmer of hope, we will not succumb to the darkness of the night.
It's true that in many ways, we are divided - just look at the latest Israeli government! And even among us, there are many Jews and many who profess to be Jews who sow division and distrust of one another, trying to divide us among artificial and superficial things like colour and ethnicity and geography.
But in other ways, we have never been stronger, because as different as we are to each other, we are also the same. And despite our many flaws, our sense of community is strong. When two-year-old Moshe Holtzberg was left an orphan in the Mumbai terrorist attacks, we wept together. When Sergeant Ronen Lubarsky died from wounds sustained in a terror attack, Jewish hearts from around the world grieved together. When little eight year old Leiby Kletzky was killed by one of our own in New York, we looked up to the heavens together, asking why?
And when the State of Israel rescued over 14000 Ethiopian Jews in just 36 hours and brought them home to Israel, our hearts swelled with a pride that could barely be contained in our ever expanding chests. Because each tragedy is a tragedy that we all feel together and each joy is a joy we all celebrate together. And each crisis we will face, as individuals and collectively, with the United Nations, with the Arabs, with the world itself â we will overcome. Together.
Others will always try to define us, using terms such as creed, or race, or colour, or ethnicity, or religion. But what they can't understand and will never be able to understand is that we have an invisible bond that connects us from every corner of the world and across the entire expanse of time, from Abraham until today. It is a bond that cannot be broken, try as our enemies might - and they have. Because every Jew today is my brother and my sister and it doesn't matter if I'm in Tulsa or Toronto, in Melbourne or Mumbai, or in Jorhat, India or Jerusalem, Israel.Â
So let me tell you about the Jews.Â
We may not be your average nation, but average was never in our destiny.Â
We may not be a perfect nation, but perfection was never sought.WhatÂ
we are is a people, the Jewish people, and there is nothing on this earth that will ever change that......

Well, this is the last chapter of the sort of⊠intro part of this fic. But there is so much more to happen.
im always gonna tag @helleborusangel and then the scattered au was made by @hermitcraftheadcanons
False killed another drowned while Stress continued to fix up their base. A creeper had managed to show up and destroyed a bit of their base, and before they could fix it there was another, and then drowned were coming up from the ocean. While the two of them would have loved to move further away, even head towards spawn, but they had tried that already and it didnât go well. Stress had gotten killed and was sent back to her spawn in the middle of the coral, leaving False to run back and help her out.
They hadnât managed to get any beds to set spawn, as right now they werenât even sure if beds would work since their starting spawns were messed up as well as chat bugging out and regen not working. So, because of all that they were on the island closest to the coral reef and were setting up a base there. With everything going on, they were doing pretty well, having gotten a good starter base set up and were almost at full diamond.
They hadnât set up a nether portal just yet, prioritizing better armor. Of course, they would head in for the first time with iron armor for scouting so that they wouldnât lose their hard work to a bad spawn, but if they were going to explore that dimension without regeneration, the more protection they had, the better. The priority after that was getting their way into a fortress and finding supplies for potions. Blaze rods, netherwart and glowstone were going to be a priority, but while it would be nice to have regeneration potions, but the pair had found melon seeds in a shipwreck, so instant health would be a much safer option.
False heard Stress call out to her, and then the fighter killed another drowned before running back into the base, the whole place now patched up and better lit than before. For the most part, it was just the essentials with the only decoration being the style of the build itself, but there was one exception, that being a small tank that held a tropical fish that had been stuck with Stress where she had first spawned.
âWell luv, do you fink weâre prepped enough to head to the nether?â Stress asked, ready to switch her armor up. âIâve already got a portal set up that we just need to light.â
âYeah, that sounds like a good idea. Plus we might be able to find Wels and Keralis since they seem to both be in the nether.â
âOh, Keralis is in there too?â Stress asked, taking her comm out to look at the messages.
âWell, he got killed by some piglins and also got Hot Tourist Destinations, but never actually used a portal to get to the nether.â
âAlright, well when we get through, we can look for the two of them.â
.
.
.
Keralis was once again very glad he could make stew out of the new nether fungi. While he had found a few red and brown mushrooms, he hadnât found many and fighting hoglins in a mishmash of armor wasnât the most appearing idea right now. There was the slight problem of it not being mushroom stew and instead some suspicious stew, and he was getting various effects from it, but some food was better than nothing at all.
The builder was glad he had at the very least spawned in the warped forest, so the most he needed to worry about were endermen and any stray piglins that wandered into the forest from the nearby wastes. And even then he had gold armor so they wouldnât really bother him unless they saw him opening his own chests which he didnât think was fair.
Using some bone meal he had obtained from a soul sand valley, Keralis worked on getting another crimson fungus for some more stew. Warped fungi was easy enough to get, seeing as how he was in a warped forest, but crimson was much harder. But hopefully he wouldnât need to do that much longer.
With his supplies from the forest and nearby basalt delta, Keralis had gotten plenty of gold to trade with piglins. The mobs gave him supplies in return, and they had almost given him enough obsidian for a portal into the overworld. Where he would end up when he got to the other side, Keralis had no clue, but either way it would be better than the nether.
He sighed when the bone meal ran out and there were still no crimson fungi. If he wanted to eat later that⊠day? Night? Just⊠later on in general, he would need to either head to the crimson forest, or get more bone meal. And right now, the soul sand valley was closer.
Keralis got geared up and then started the trek to the other biome. He already had a safe path there, so he took his time to walk and not tire himself out and need food he didnât currently have on hand. That said, he was keeping his eyes out for any trouble on the path as well as looking for any piglin he could barter with. He mistook a ziglin here or there for their unzombified counterparts, but unluckily there didnât seem to be any normal piglin in sight.
But while his luck for piglin seemed to be low, his luck in general was not, because he was able to spot a portal on a hill in the wastes. And it wasnât a ruined portal. Even if it had been, Keralis likely would have gone to it to see if there were any supplies he could use. But instead, this was just a lone, lit, hermit made portal.
Keralis booked it to the portal, nearly falling into a gap in the netherrack that led straight down to lava. But he was fine and no mobs were around to attack him. So he stepped into the portal and let the magic whisk him away, coming out on the other side a few moments later.
He was glad to see stone brick on the other side of the portal, something that didnât really appear in the nether. A set of stairs was nearby and Keralis walked up them, finding a nice looking starter base sans beds, but with a small aquarium with a single fish. He moved over to a window and looked out to see the sun rising and no monsters around. He could also see the ocean and a coral reef under the water. After days in the nether, it was an amazing sight, and Keralis just sat there to take it all in. And also hopefully meet whoever built this place when they returned.

Scar had majorly screwed up and found himself caught in a death loop of sorts. He had accidently lost his footing while pruning some chorus plants and tumbled into the void. When he respawned, he happened to be looking right at an enderman, who promptly killed him. And then killed him again when he respawned. And then yet again. Eventually he wised up enough to keep his eyes closed tight for the next respawn, and he was left alone, but keeping his eyes closed suddenly seemed like a horrible option.
The end was already quiet enough, and other than the feeling of the endstone under his feet, Scar could have mistaken himself for floating in the void. It had been so quiet before with only the sounds of endermen, but now it was louder. Scar snapped his eyes open to look around for the source of the noise, only to get killed again, but then he was careful the second time, looking for what was making that new noise.
It sounded like whispering, but it definitely wasnât endermen. It also sounded too close to just be something quiet in the distance like the shulkers at the end city. Feeling a little frustrated, Scar shouted, hoping whatever was making the noise would hear him and answer. âHello?! Is anyone out there?!â
Scar couldnât help but let a shiver go down his spine as the whispering stopped. That probably wasnât the best sign, but at the very least whatever was making that sound could hear him. Though understanding might be a different story. âHey, if you can, I need some help! Iâm kind of stranded out here!â
Scar paused, hoping for an answer. At first none came, but just before he completely lost hope, he heard a familiar voice. âWe may provide some help. You have done a number of things that we can repay you for. But that amount is still not much, and when we stop, we will stop unless you can give us more.â
Scar knew the voice of the vex. Technically he and Cub had left that behind in season six, but desperate times did call for desperate measures. The vex didnât tell him how many times they would help him, so he knew he would need to be careful with using that help. That being said, he knew there was one thing that would definitely help. âAre you able to get me back to the overworld? Preferably somewhere safe?â
There was more whispering as the vex discussed between themselves, but after a few moments, they responded. âUnfortunately, we are unable to do that. A higher power is the reason you are here in the first place. However, there are strings we may pull to give you access to an escape.â
âThatâs good enough for me.â Scar replied. While it wasnât an immediate exit, having one on the way was still a good thing to have. âUm, well, do you know who the closest hermit to me is? Other than TFC that is, since I know heâs in the end with me.â
Scar was pretty sure that would be a good question. The closest player would likely be whoever was almost to the end themselves, or maybe they were in the stronghold. Once he knew that, he would hopefully have another request that the vex would allow and they could send a message to them for him. But instead, the vex gave him a much more unfavorable answer. âLook up.â
Scar was confused, but then carefully looked up, avoiding the gaze of any endermen. He scanned the horizon for something, anything that might show signs of a hermit, but there was nothing. His next guess was that maybe a hermit had already claimed an elytra and was flying around, so he looked further into what passed as a sky in the end. And then he saw the bright color that was Bdubs.
At first Scar wanted to smile as seeing his friend, but then he realized the man wasnât wearing any sort of elytra and was falling fast. Without much more thought, Scar backed up and watched Bdubs get closer before he finally ran to the edge of his small island and jumped. Scar yelled Bdubsâ name as he reached for the hermit, the other man not reacting until Scar managed to grab his arm. Bdubsâ eyes shot open and he looked around in surprise before his eyes finally rested on Scar. âScar! How did you get down here?â
âYou were falling past the island Iâve been stuck on. Look!â And Scar pointed to the island which was rapidly disappearing above them.
âI thought I was just ages into the void. I lost my comm forever ago so I had no clue how far down I was. No wonder I havenât died.â
âYeah, well sorry that I canât really get us out of this. But maybe you can shift yourself a bit to the side so maybe I can catch you when you respawn again.â
Bdubs chuckled, glad for some sort of hope. âYeah. See you in a couple days.â
The two held onto each other as they continued to fall, but Bdubs watched in horror as Scar was the only one of them to take damage from the void. A few moments later, he disappeared into smoke which Bdubs tried to grab on to in vain, but a moment later, it was all gone, and he was back to falling alone.

TFC hid behind an obsidian pillar to catch his breath as the purple magic of the dragonâs breath was blocked by it. He was running low on health again, so he needed to be careful about getting near the dragon so she could fling him up at the right time. Without blocks, bows and arrows, ladders, or anything really, TFC just had to hope that he could reach the crystals and punch them just before dying. He had already managed to take out two, but there were still plenty to go, especially the caged ones.
There was a roar and TFC cursed as the dragon phased through the pillar and he found himself falling a moment later. He wasnât close enough to any of the pillars with crystals to try and take them out. That was, unless he somehow managed to catch himself on the iron bars around the nearest crystal and not kill himself. But that was unlikely. He was already old and prosthetics werenât the best for stuff like this.
So, it ended up that TFC found himself hitting the ground and respawning on the obsidian platform again. He slowly got himself to sit on the platform without managing to throw his back out and used it as some time to rest. He knew the dragon would probably find her way over to him eventually, but right now he was done with fighting.
He pulled out his communicator to check on how everyone else was doing, frowning upon seeing Scarâs many end related deaths. TFC wondered if it would have been better if Scar were the one stuck on the island instead. He could probably deal with the dragon better than him. Probably anyone could. Maybe once upon a time defeating the dragon alone was a feat he could manage, but his old bones werenât built for that anymore.
He knew it was probably in vain, but TFC tried to send another distress message into the chat. He didnât really have many other options for what to do, and for all he knew, it could eventually fix itself and everyone would just assume it was still broken if he didnât check. But, with a sigh, he just got another error message. Maybe another time, thatâs all TFC could hope for.

Etho continued to shiver in the covers of the bed he had been put in. When he respawned on top of a mountain, he was surprised to see Grian and the bots up there. Even though there werenât any trees or animals or life whatsoever other than the other people themselves, they had somehow managed to get a bed and some food. And looking at his communicator, they had managed to somehow all keep from dying from the cold, only having a few instances of falling or even one of starvation.
Etho looked over to Grian, who was currently sitting in the snow and shivering even more than he was. The avian had their wings wrapped around himself and was rubbing his arms to keep warm. Etho had tried more than once to get out of the bed so that Grian could use it, but the bots had both insisted he use it instead.
At first, he had complained, saying he would be fine and he didnât want Grian to deal with the cold like this. But then he watched as Grian suddenly summoned purple flames in his hands, the fireâs warmth reaching the bed at least a little. The color seemed to reflect in Grianâs eyes perfectly, his irises matching the amethyst color at the moment. At least, that was Ethoâs first thought, but then he remembered Ren and Impulseâs eyes being different colors, and suddenly he wasnât so sure.
âS-So, how did you g-guys get this st-stuff?â Etho chattered out, making the two bots tuck him into the cover more.
âDad made them.â Jrum answered. âWhen he respawns, heâs able to use magic to make us stuff like food or this bed.â
Etho nodded, but then looked up again. âWh-why hasnât he tried making something to get you guys down?â
The bots didnât immediately answer, instead looking at each other nervously. âWell, somethingâs been up with Dad. When we got here his wings got weird looking and then there was that thing.â And Jrum pointed to the small ice and bedrock structure Etho had spawned next to. âAnd then he started attacking us so we had to push him off the mountain and when he respawned he wanted us to abandon him here and then you showed up!â
âS-so in other w-words, s-somethingâs wrong w-with him, b-but y-you donât kn-know what.â And the bots nodded. âW-Well, th-that sums up a l-lot of th-things going on. L-Like e-every time I r-respawn, I sh-show up n-near someone e-else.â
âReally?â
âOr s-something l-like that. I s-started out at s-spawn with Joe a-and Beef.â Etho paused to rub his arms for a bit more warmth. âWhen I res-spawned, I w-was in a r-ravine with Ren. H-He s-suddenly attacked m-me like your d-dad did so then I w-was in the e-end.â
âDid you find Scar or TFC?â Grum asked, surprised when Etho shook his head.
âNeither. B-Bdubs is s-stuck in the v-void and isnât d-dying. I d-didnât see him but I f-found his c-communicator. I d-died before I c-could find out m-more. After that was th-the desert.â
âSo Iskall or XB, right? Theyâve both died of dehydration so that means they have to be somewhere hot.â
âY-yeah, probably. But I d-didnât see anyone. J-just a l-lack of dead b-bushes.â Etho explained. âA-anyway, s-sort of at that point I r-realized I w-was a-appearing n-near other p-people, s-so I made s-something to j-jump off of t-to send me e-elsewhere.â
âOkay, where did you go next?â Jrum asked before getting an idea. âOh! And are you able to look at coordinates when you show up there, because then you might help people who are safe figure out where those who arenât are!â
âY-yeah. Iâve g-got access to those. J-just havenât taken advantage of th-that too much. I s-spawned with Imp-pulse next a-and used a-all the time I h-had to tr-try and break a block w-with him.â
âWell, heâs still dying a lot, so if you did, it doesnât look like it helped much.â Jrum said, Grum elbowing him. âOw! Hey! Itâs true, isnât it?â
âYes, but you shouldnât say things like that. Etho is doing the best he can in a situation like this.â
âI-Itâs fine. I g-get it. After th-that, I sh-showed up h-here.â
âAnd you have surprisingly lasted the longest up here based on the death messages.â Grum agreed. âWell, actually, it was longer when you were with Ren, but itâs getting close. You slept for a while when we first got you into the bed.â
Etho nodded. âH-How long h-has i-it been?â
The bots both looked up at the sky to look at the sun before looking back to Etho. âItâs been at least a day. We werenât really paying attention to when you showed up. Uh⊠itâs sort of like⊠the middle of the fifth day weâve all been stuck in this season.â
Before Etho could respond, there was a chirp and Grian started using fire to warm himself up again. Etho stared at the avian and then Grum and Jrum carefully moved Grian closer to the bed so the warmth of the fire would reach him, but not too much in case they upset Grian. âWhen we first got you into bed and you fell asleep, Dad got upset and attempted to attack you, so weâve been trying to keep that from happening again.â
âTh-thanks.â
Since Etho wasnât stuck in the snow, the cold wasnât enough to kill him, so the bots did their best to keep him warm and fed. At the same time, they talked things out with Etho about what they could do since Etho could find people and Grian seemed to be able to get them necessary items.
Eventually, night fell and Grian forcefully got closer to curl up with the bots, each of them finding themselves pinned under one of their dadâs wings. They were worried about Etho at first, especially when Grian moved closer to the bed, but the only thing then needed to worry about was Ethoâs bones accidently being crushed when Grian plopped himself onto the bed and tried to squeeze all four of them on the mattress made for one person.
Surprisingly, they all managed to get to sleep in that position, but it didnât help advance the day forward like the first time Grian used the bed. Despite being metal, the combined body heat of Grian and Etho kept all of them warm, as well as from them just being out of the snow. Since the bots technically didnât need to sleep, they mostly stayed awake to keep an eye on things, though taking it in shifts so they didnât overdo it. But the night was calm, and it looked like everything was going to be fine.
And then just as the sun was coming up over the horizon, things changed. Grian got up suddenly, winding Etho and causing the bots to fall to the ground. His wings were puffed up in agitation and flames came from his hands, though his hands were over his ears, making it look like his head was on fire.
Jrum was the first to get up and go over to Grian, but the avianâs wings just swiped at the bot and kept them away. Grum tried next but just got the same result, though he was hit away at a different angle, nearly sending him off the edge of the mountain. Etho, despite having nothing except a bit of food, got up from the bed to get close to Grian, managing to dodge his wings.
By the time Etho reached Grian, he had started hyperventilating. The ninja put his hand on Grianâs shoulder and he whipped around, bright amethyst eyes staring unfocused at Etho. âC-can you t-tell m-me whatâs up? Whatâs going on?â Grian didnât respond verbally, but his eyes flicked over to the pillar next to them on the mountain. âThatâs c-causing it? L-Letâs s-see what w-we can do a-about it.â
Etho walked over to the pillar and looked it over before trying to break the ice since he obviously could break bedrock. He was a little weak from the cold, but Etho was sure he could do this. He had done it for Impulse, and that was underwater. The thing was, he couldnât get far before he found himself face down in the snow, a hand on the back of his head keeping it down so he couldnât look up. With a bit of struggling, however, Etho was able to twist his head to the side and his good eye looked up at Grian.
With his voice muffled by the current situation, Etho tried to say something to Grian, not sure if he would hear or even respond. âGrian, what are you doing?â
For a moment, Grian didnât answer, then he cocked his head to the side confused as well as gave a smile. âOh, do you mean-?â He cut himself off by laughing. âWhat I'm doing is making sure you keep going. You wonât fix anything like this.â Etho tried to question what Grian meant, but there was suddenly more pressure pushing him down and preventing him from talking. âGo on now. Freeze to death. Youâre only really getting that here.â
Etho was vaguely aware of the bots trying to get him to the bed and pull Grian away, but they didnât seem to be strong enough for that. There was the clank of metal hitting together, then on stone further down. âWelcome to day five. Iâll speed us through so we can get to the good stuff.â And then Etho froze to death.
.
.
.
As the sun was rising, Joe got up with a start. Something didnât feel right. He jumped out of bed and went looking for Beef, finding him still taking a nap in his own bed. Joe shook the other hermit awake, not wanting to be alone if his new bad feeling was dangerous at all. Beef complained a little at first, but when Joe explained further, he dragged himself out of bed and geared up.
Swords were drawn as they left the building, looking everywhere they could for danger and making sure to watch each otherâs backs. Any mobs from the night were dying from the sun aside from some creepers which they took care of with a couple arrows. But other than all that, there was nothing that really stood out.
Giving up, they started back to their beds, taking a different path back, and then suddenly Joe realized what was the problem, and why he felt off the night before. âBeef, I think thatâs our problem right there.â
Beef looked over to Joe, then to where Joe was pointing. Right where the main building of spawn was, or at least, where it had been. Standing in its place, towering above the other buildings, was a tower of various blocks like obsidian, bedrock, endstone, blackstone, and more. The pair moved to get a better look at the new building, finding an entrance at its base which was a few blocks above the surrounding terrain, though it had also appeared with a hill.

hey, I'd like your input on a certain question I have pertaining to a hypothetical alternate ending of banana fish (the one where ash survives his stab wound). if you're not sure how to answer, that's completely fine, but I've seen so many people in the fandom claim so many different things about what would have happened if he survived, and I'm searching for a solid opinion.
I think the majority of the fandom can collectively agree that ash didn't need to die in order to heal from his trauma. I've see a lot of idiots say that even if ash lived, he would never heal or escape his past trauma, and so dying was the best outcome for his circumstances, which I'm sure the majority of us with more than 1 active braincell knows that's utter dog shit, and that survivors can heal no matter how big of a wound they may need treated.
however, I've seen people say that dying was his best option, NOT because he wouldn't have healed from his trauma, but because he wouldn't have the chance to heal considering the fact that he'd always be hunted down by his enemies. I've also seen people claim that even if he moved countries, he'd always be in constant danger because people would never stop looking for him. that he, as well as eiji, would have to live in fear and would never find peace due to the enemies ash has made during his lifetime.
I'm not sure what to think of this. I believe he'd be able to fake his death, borrow a new identity, and fake a passport to get on that damn plane headed to Japan. some have said that he wouldn't be able to due to his criminal record and so he'd never be allowed on a plane, which I also believe is dog shit. if that blond can scam millions of dollars out of and buy a condo right across from his #1 enemy without being caught, he can fucking travel. it's absurd how part of the fandom STILL underestimates his abilities, considering that he's shown time and time again of how capable and intelligent he truly is.
If you're able to answer, I'd like your opinion. we've established that survivors are able to heal no matter how big the baggage, but do you think he'd get the chance to heal, or would he always be on the run? would he forever be preoccupied with running from his enemies, or do you think his enemies would die trying to find him? I personally think that since his #1 enemy, D*no, is charred to a crisp, that he'd be somewhat safe from the rest. I don't think they'd even find him in an entirely different country in an entirely different continent.
but what do I know, honestly? maybe Yoshida confirmed that even if he did survive, he'd still be on the run until he died. I know she's said that murderers didn't deserve happy endings (bullshit, considering the circumstances that ash was in), but I'm not sure if she's clarified whether he would be on the run if he did hypothetically live. what do you think? no pressure :)
First of all, I'm a big fan of ignoring things Yoshida said.
I'm glad we agree that trauma survivors can heal! Also a big fan of that. Not gonna discuss that more here since we're already on the same page đ
Before I get into whether or not Ash could ever escape from his enemies, I'd like to establish something about myself and my beliefs. I, personally, think that living is always going to be the better option. I am not going to be taking this question as a "could Ash have escaped his enemies, or is it good that he died?" That's not the problem here. The question I'll respond to below is "could Ash have escaped his enemies, or would he have always been on the run?"
This is an important distinction, because the first question implies that some lives just aren't worth living. I think your intentions here were good, so please don't take this as an attack on you in any way! But I'm not a fan of "living in fear [or living any other way] is worse than death" for a number of reasons. For one thing, dying is permanent. Once you die, there's never a chance of it getting better. It's literally a permanent solution to what often has the potential to be a temporary problem.
Also, any sort of "death is better" logic is a very slippery slope to be walking. If death is better than living in fear, is it also better than living with a permanent disability? With a chronic illness? At what point is it bad but still worth living through? Will Ash, on some level, always be living in fear due to what's likely post-traumatic stress disorder? Healing is obviously possible, but healing means learning how to cope better with a history of trauma, not getting rid of it.
So we're essentially asking the same question that we've already established the answer to: Is it better to live than to die? And, uh, yeah. Yeah, it is.
So anyway, moving onto the question I believe you were intending to ask: Would Ash have been able to escape his enemies?
Yeah. He would have.
For one thing, most of the people who actually gave a shit were already dead. Sure, the Corsican Foundation still existed, but most of them probably didn't think much of Ash besides him being Dino's favorite. There were those who saw Ash's mind in action during that month he spent with Dino during canon, but without Dino there, they have no reason to want Ash dead. Same with the ones who wanted Ash dead before the National Health Institute arc, if they weren't already dead themselves by the end of canon (like Kippard).
If Ash weren't going after them, I don't see why any of them would go after Ash.
Yut-Lung arguably had more enemies than Ash did by the end of canon, which was even Blanca's excuse for agreeing to work for him, but I don't see anyone arguing that Yue should have died. (I believe that he was canonically killed by one of his enemies at some point after Garden of Light, but does that mean that those 7+ years of freedom that he lived were pointless just because they came to an end?)
As far as traveling, yeah, Ash absolutely would have been able to fake an identity if he needed to. Like you said, he's done worse, and it's not like he doesn't have the connections for it. Although ...
I don't know if I've ever fully explained it in a fic or on here, but here's how I usually write post-canon.
Ash and Eiji stay in NYC. We know that moving back to the States and staying there is possible for Eiji, because ... it's what he does in canon after Ash's death. It's mentioned in GoL that Eiji moved back before he even healed completely from his gunshot wound, and that he got his Permanent Resident Card five years later.
As far as Ash, as much as a fucking pain in the ass it would be for him, I usually write him as actually testifying in court against ... fucking everyone. He gets help with this from Max, of course, and also from Jessica (who leaked Max's investigation, including the evidence they obtained from Frog, to the media in episode 23). In return for his testimony, he's granted total witness immunity for his crimes. ((Keep in mind that I know nothing about legal processes and how this would actually work in real life, but for fanfiction purposes that's how I choose to write it.))
So basically: Fuck Yoshida. Fuck death. Live your best life. YOLO.

1. Siren Indruck NSFW, Duck is hauling supplies for the small town of Kepler on a tiny boat. Due to dangerous storms, Duck takes a longer but safer and less traversed route. He doesnât know heâll be passing through a Sirenâs territory. A siren who is looking for a strong and sturdy mate
Here you go!
Duck never tells anyone what he finds on the beach that day.Â
Heâs fourteen, looking for useful flotsam and jetsam tossed onto the sand by an ongoing storm. What he finds is an empty boat and a merman, silvery tail impaled with a spear in a piece of driftwood. Each time he tries to free himself, he winces and is unable to pull the weapon from his body. When he sees Duck, his red eyes widen and he bares sharp teeth in a hiss.Â
âItâs okayâ the boy kneels in the bloody sand, âI ainât gonna hurt you. Or, uh, thisâll hurt for a sec, but itâll be better than tryin to ease it out bit by bit.â He grabs the end of the fishing spear and pulls. The merman shrieks, quickly clamping his hands across his mouth as Duck pulls his handkerchief from his pocket to bandage the wound.Â
âThere, you should be able to-â
The creature is gone with a whip of his tail, sliding down the sand and into the waves. As Duck stands, a strange song floats from the foam for the briefest instant. A seasoned sailor can tell a siren from a normal mer on sight; Duck has never been to sea. Itâs weeks later that he wonders what events resulted in the wounded siren and an empty boat.Â
-------------------------------
Any other day, Duck would put off this run until the black clouds no longer hung over the horizon. But the supply run last week didnât come, so the isolated, coastal town of Kepler is running low on, among other things, the medicine needed to treat an illness spreading from house to house. He could put this off until tomorrow, but he wonât sleep well tonight if he does.
The boat loaded, he starts out to sea under unfriendly skies. Today is a day to follow the coastline and then circle Greenbriar Island to reach Kepler, rather than trying for a straight shot. Itâll double his travel time, but itâs far safer in a storm and no one but a few locals know how to navigate it. Duck takes this route once or twice most years. This summer alone heâs had to take it six times, with today making a seventh. The abnormal number of storms weighs on the minds of coastal residents. Duck tries not to obsess over it, given that itâs solidly out of his control and thereâs no use fussing over wind and rain; thereâs only getting through them.Â
Halfway through his journey, a rogue swell catches the underside of the boat and drags it along a rock, springing a leak in the hull. He ties off on a thin spire of stone, clambering onto a rock to try and repair the damage. Itâs not a big leak, but itâll be trouble if he lets it go.Â
As heâs laying awkwardly with water lapping up his legs, a human head rises from the water a few feet from him. Silver hair, red eyes and, when it smiles, very sharp teeth. Harmless mermaids have teeth much like his own, which means heâs alone in the ocean with a fucking siren.
Duckâs learned many things since that day on the beach; how a song can paralyze a man better than poison, how the bite marks on the skin of certain bodies that wash ashore are called siren kisses
The siren begins swimming closer. Duck sighs, âIf youâre gonna drown and eat me, can you do it on the way back?â
Red eyes blink, confused, but the siren stays where he is.Â
âIf I donât make it to Kepler, lotta folksâll get sick, some will even die. And I donât think you got much use for medicine and canned food.â
The siren shakes his head.Â
âGlad you understand.â Duck finishes his repairs under watchful eyes. At one point, the siren swims all the way to the rock Duck is perched on, resting his chin on his hands, as if enjoying the view.Â
Duck scrambles back into the boat the moment heâs done, but no cold fingers try for his ankles and no splash announces something lunging upwards after him. A cautious glance as he starts the engine finds the siren sitting on the rock, silver-blue tail still half in the water. When he notices Duck looking, he waves.Â
The rest of the journey goes as planned, the relief on folks faces when Duck docks worth the peril. When he reaches the sirenâs territory on his return, no song tempts him. A lithe shape keeps pace with the boat, fin breaking the surface now and then. When he hits open water, the siren turns back, disappearing from view.Â
-----------------------
There are sex dreams, and then thereâs whatever the fuck Duck is having right now. Fingers stroke his hair, cling to his shoulders. Kisses coat his face and a voice whispers his name as the speaker offers themself to him again and again. He sees himself tangled with a man, face always just out of focus, who spreads his legs and lips so Duck can sink himself into the heat of his body. The dream is endless and he doesnât care, doesnât ever want to wake up.Â
Saltwater in his lungs renders that desire useless. He snaps back to consciousness as another wave hits him; heâs up to his neck in the cove below his house.Â
âThe fuck?â Itâs only his footprints visible in the moonlight in the sand, so no one dumped him here.Â
âOh dear.â
âJesus!â Duck stumbles back as glowing eyes peer around a rock. Itâs the siren from yesterday, swimming purposefully as Duck wades backwards.Â
âLook, uh, when I said I wanted you to wait to eat me, I wasnât bein serious. Or, uh, I was, but I meant I didnât want to be eaten ever, not just then. It was a, uh, a joke.â
âI am aware.â The siren stops as Duck topples on his ass in the shallow water, âand I am sorry. I, ah, I did not mean to lure you from your bed. I was not aware my mindless singing was enough to wake you. In most futures, you slept until dawn.â
âUh huh, sure, because sirens are known to just serenade folks without wanting to drown âem.âÂ
âWe do it more often than you might think.â The siren sighs, âI came here to keep you safe, and succeeded only in making you afraid.â
Duck, having scooted inelegantly onto dry land, watches the tan upper body of the siren sag. Itâs awkward, a word not associated with this kind of mer. That suggests heâs telling the truth.Â
âYou gonna tell me why youâre playin watchdog at my house?âÂ
The siren chirps, intrigued, âIn all but one future you told me to go away.â
âThatâd just leave me with more questions. And so far, you ainât done anythin otherân watch me; if you say this was an accident, Iâm willin to hear you out.â
âWonderful!â The siren claps his hands together and the tip of his tail flips out of the water. Then he clears his throat and recites, âI am known as Indrid Cold. As you noticed, I am a siren. I am also a gifted seer, artist, and lifeguard when humans are unconscious and thus will not try to kill me for rescuing them. I am an excellent fisher, and well-liked and/or feared by the larger creatures of this coastline. This is why I think I would be an excellent mate.â
âO-kay. Did you call me out here to practice your personals ad?â Duck smirks, charmed by Indrids earnest tone.
âThis is not practice. I did a great deal of that earlier today. This is my formal declaration that I would very much like you to be my mate.â
âMa--hold on.â The images from his near-fatal dream return, âwere you singinâ to hit on me?â
Indrid crosses his arms, âFor the last time, that song was not for you. It was about you, because I was daydreaming and my formless melody unintentionally conveyed the contents of said daydream into your mind.â
âSo everythin in it, all that wild fuckin stuff, thatâs stuff you wanna do with me?â
A nod, accompanied by a flash of white light under the water.Â
âWhy?â
âBecause you are strong, and handsome, and capable on the water. I watched your futures yesterday and today and saw you are kind as well, well-liked by other humans but a little lonely at night. You are very nice to that small land-otter that lives in your house.â
âYou mean the cat?â
âThatâs the word! Yes, you are nice to your cat. You are not brash or cruel, and you look so very nice without a shirt. I...I like you, Duck. You are everything I want in a mate.â
âFeel like I might be missinâ some gills and fins.â He jokes to cover the fact heâs scanning his mind and body for the same dreamy lull he felt during the song. What he finds in itâs place is his ego purring from praise and wondering exactly what a siren would do for his mate.
âThere is no rule that says I must choose only my own kind for such activities. I, ah, I know it is strange, given how little we know of each other, but I thought that, ah, since humans will have casual sex with each other maybe we could, or, ah, that isâŠâ Heâs watching Duck with such unconcealed hope that the human almost joins him in the water.
âIndrid, Iâm real flattered. But Iâd be a damn fool if I didnât point out this feels like a fuckin trap. Pretty easy for you to drag me to my death once weâre, uh, in the middle of things. Not that Iâm sayin you would.â He adds when the sirens smile dims.Â
âA sensible concern. May I join you on land for a moment? There is something I want to show you.â
Duck pats the sand beside him, eyes following the ripples of Indridâs tail as he swims, slithers, and slides onto the beach. It reminds Duck of an oarfish, though when Indrid spies him looking the scales flash deep purple.Â
âLook thereâ Indrid points toward the end of the silver ribbon of scales; a round, white scar stares up at Duck. The details of a day over two decades in the past return to him.
âYouâre the siren I found when I was a kid.â
âIndeed. I remember you by your eyes, though your face has some echoes of that day in itâs curves. You saved my life, showed me mercy when I expected none. Sirens do not forget a favor, and we do not kill those who once spared us. I will never harm you, even if you turn me away tonight. You will be safe, whether that is in my arms or merely in my territory.â
Duck avoids the stranger sides of life by the sea, citing a lifelong incompatibility with the weird. Turns out all he needed to find his exception to that rule is a handsome siren looking at him like he set the tides in motion.Â
The human runs a finger up the sirens tail, sparks of purple and pale blue light igniting in itâs wake.Â
âDidnât know yâall changed colors.â He pets Indridâs hip and the whole tail lights up this time.Â
âI am a deep-sea siren by birth, we use light to communicate emotions.â
âMind, uh, loopin me in on the conversation?â
âPurple means desire. Itâs a common color in mating displays.â Indrid watches Duckâs hand glide along his scales, and a burst of pale blue reflects across their faces.Â
âAnd that one?â
âSubmission.â Indrid murmurs, âit is, ah, not the most desirable color to show. My kind value strength and power; enjoying the opposite is an invitation to mockery.â The sirenâs eyes stay downcast, even when Duck smooths silver hair from his face.
âNow, I like to joke as much as the next fella, but that donât seem like somethin to tease about.â
âNo?â Indridâs gaze flicks onto Duck the instant before the man straddles him. Duck doesnât even have to push him onto his back; he goes instantly, hands flat on the sand and tail twitching excitedly in the shallows.Â
âNo. Seems to me a sweet thing like you oughta be takin care of.âÂ
Indrid snickers, âThat is not usually an adjective one uses for meAHahnnâ he arches as Duck tugs his hair.
âLetâs get one thing straight, sugar; I decide what you get called. I wanna call you the most perfect creature in the sea, I will. And if I wanna call you a needy little mer whoâs good for nothin but gettin fucked into the sand, youâre gonna nod and say âyes.â Understood?â
The blue light flashing up his tail brightens, âY-yes but, but why do you call me sugar? That is a food.â
Duck giggles, leans down to brush their noses together, âItâs a nickname, call you it because youâre sweet and I canât wait to get my fill of you.â
âOhhhh, I see.âÂ
âYou wanna see somethin else?â
âVery much soOH, oh goodness.â Indrid gasps as Duck forces his gaze towards his cock attempting to free itself from his boxers. He grinds on the supple muscle of his tail to take the pressure off, chuckles when the siren whines and tries to kiss his chest.Â
âSince youâre the only siren Iâd ever even consider fuckin-â Duck pauses as Indrid moans loudly, digging his fingers into the sand, âyou gotta show me how to go about it.â
âIf, if you just continue as you are a little higher upyes, yes right thereâ He rolls his hips, purrs with such a blissful expression that Duck is powerless to do anything but kiss him. His affection grows when he notices Indrid clearly restraining his kisses so as not to catch Duckâs mouth or tongue with his sharp teeth. The last guy he fucked shoved his tongue down his throat without any build-up or finesse, and now all he can think is if only Indrid had made his feelings know sooner, Duck could have done away with shitty human dates and had an obedient, eager mer instead.Â
âMmmmmâ Indrid licks his lips, runs his fingers up Duckâs sides, âkissing is nice. It is not something sirens often indulge in, so my chances to do it are few and far between.â
âAinât that a shameâ Duck kisses the corners of his mouth, âlips like these were made to be kissed sore.â
Indrid purrs, wiggling his tail, and Duck looks down to see a slit opening where his clothed cock has been rubbing.Â
âHuh. Kinda figured you had-â
â-I have both this and an appendage below it much like your own.â
âHandy.â Duck, in no mood to climb off the purring, otherworldly man, eases the waistband of his damp boxers just under his balls.Â
âThis, uh, this ainât gonna actually create a, I mean, I donât wanna accidentally-â
âNono, there is no chance of procreationâ
âAnd youâll be okay with so little of you in the water?â
âYesyes I will be fine.â Indrid tugs at his hips, bucks his own into the air in frustration.Â
âJust checkinâ oh, oh fuckâ Indrid is tight and ridged around his dick as it slides in, âfuckin christ, no wonder sailorsâll crash into rocks at the offerin of fuckin a siren, wait, fuck, that was probably rude.â
âI will let it slideâ Indrid teases, the end of his tail curling around Duckâs left ankle, âon account of your body is so lovely I would beach myself and die gasping on your doorstep for a chance to touch it.â
âNo need for that. All you gotta do is wait here like a good little mer and Iâll fuck you as much as you want.â The slit pulses as Duck slowly fucks in and out, and he knows heâll have to throw out all his fleshlights after this because nothing will ever compare to the deliciously alien feeling of Indrid around his dick.Â
âDo, do not joke about such things.â Indrid whimpers, clinging to his shoulders.
âI ainât. You wanted a mate, right?â
âYes, you, so very badly.â
âWell, you got one, and you feel so goddamn good on my cock I ainât inclined to let you swim off and be someone elseâs.â
âI do not want to, I only want you, please, please let me stay.â
Duck stills his hims and the siren writhes as he leans down. The human cups his cheek, âI want you to stay, âDrid. I wanna get to know you. Long as you promise you ainât gonna fuck me unless you want to, and not because youâre scared Iâll turn you loose.â
âI promise.â Indrid initiates the kiss this time, purring when Duck takes his time kissing back.Â
âGood. Now that we got that cleared upâ Duck sits up, âbe a good mate and take what I give you.â He fucks in as hard as he dares, dives back down to kiss Indridâs lips and throat as the merâs cock emerges. Duck finds he can grind his ass along the twisting shaft at the same time he drives his own into Indridâs body, resulting in a wail of pleasure and teeth sinking into his shoulder.Â
âFuck!â
âSorry!â Indrid squeaks, hiding his face in Duckâs neck, âit, it is a reflex-â
Duck yanks his head back to his shoulder, near the first mark, and holds it down, âDo it again.â
Indrid trills and pain lights up Duckâs body, the perfect counterpoint to the pleasure coursing through him with each roll of their bodies. The siren chirps and moans, nips his arms and ears, slides his tail along his legs as his cock pumps frantically against his ass.
âThatâs it sweet thing, cum for me while I fuck you. Show me just what my mate is for.â Duck bites Indridâs neck and cum splatters the backs of his thighs as Indridâs repetitions of his name drown out the noise of the waves. Duckâs orgasm follows fast, sweeps through him like the crescendo of a song carried on the night air.Â
Duck stays buried in him well after heâs finished, mind already conjuring images of tying Indrid down in shallow water and keeping his cock warm all day.
âDuck?â
âYeah, sugar?âÂ
âI, ah, I need to get back in the water.â
âOh shit, yeah, sure.â He pulls out, tosses his sea-soaked boxers up the beach as Indrid slides into the sea. Duck wades in, stopping where itâs waist deep as the siren swims lazily circles around him.Â
âSuch a perfect mate.â
âGlad you still think so.â
Indrid curls up to him, rubbing their cheeks together, âThank you for indulging me. Do...do you wish me to come back tomorrow? Or to stay tonight? There are no other mers between here and my territory, so there is no reason I cannot count this stretch as mine.â
Duck kisses one of the hickeys blooming on tan skin, âHowâs about you stay the night. We got some things to talk about. And, if youâre real good, I might let you fuck me when weâre done.â
Indrid grins, âMy dearest one, I believe we have a deal.â
----------------------------------------------
Nowadays, if you ever go near Kepler and the surrounding islands, you may hear people talk about Duck Newton, beloved native son, skilled park ranger, and the only man receive siren kisses and live to tell the tale.Â

Banana Fish Spoilers
//tw: mention of canon-typical content
Thinking about why Ash didn't go to the hospital... it's kind of symbolic, in how he got so caught up in his dream and the first semblance of hope that for a moment he forgot about the reality of the shitty world he is a part of. The one moment he stopped reflecting on the worst parts of life, was the one when he was the most vulnerable.
From this point on, it's more about Ash's mental state than anything else. His self-worth is notoriosly low and he likely predicted that he would be a burden to Eiji and/or his problems would follow him to Japan. People who target him target Eiji, and if those people still exist then in Ash's mind it's his responsibility to stay here and keep his problems in America so Eiji isn't pulled down with him the moment he finds his freedom.
If Ash's self worth had been any higher, he might still have hope that he could remedy the situation and work through it. As readers we can see any number of ways to get Ash aquitted from his crimes and be given that opportunity for hope once again. Maybe the future isn't as straightforward as Ash (and Eiji) had hoped after he read the letter, but alive and apart is significantly better than one of them being dead. The series was at a good stopping point so it was an all-or-nothing ending, and an open ending leaves hope for a more conclusive one, and it's clear that's not what the author felt like was best for her series.
As far as reader's imagination goes, if Ash did actually make it to the hospital (voluntarily or not) and survived the wound, any number of things could have happened but there's literally no way for the story to go downhill from where it was before.
For starters, Ash could agree to testify against Dino and the whole trafficking ring. That would grant him witness protection, seeing as Ash doesn't seem to have much of a problem sharing the things that happened to him. He would be a main witness in the case, and since it's like a nationally significant ruling, would also likely garner waves of public support for his bravery.
As far as being acquitted for his own crimes goes, he could take a plea deal to be exonerated if he serves as a witness (however likely or unlikely that may be considering the nature of his crimes and how many people he killed), or he would have a seperate case afterwards, and between an uproar of public support and the fact that most of the people he killed were either in self-defense or cannot be directly traced to him, he would still win the case.
Lawyer wise I wouldn't be surprised of he was the sole recipient in Dino's will and was able to purchase the best lawyer available. It's a long year or so of legal hell, but it's a world better than the usual hell on Earth that Ash is familiar with. He refuses to directly contact Eiji because he doesn't want to talk to him until he can in person (Sing talks to Eiji and tells him that Ash is just stubborn like that).
Everyone is supporting him- his gang has his back, cheering him on and starting rallies in his name. Ash has never dreamed of having so many people support him because the world had been violently against him most of his life.
When the verdict breaks in his favor, nobody had ever seen Ash with such an expression, surprised yet innocent, finally completely freed from the chains of his past. He breaks into tears, but the good kind. He resolves to make good on this verdict and stay as far away as he can from his life of crime. All of his friends agree that he's earned it.
Two days later, Ash is tearfully sent off at the airport on his way to Japan. For once in his life he doesn't know what he's doing- navigating through the airport is a whole new experience for him, but it's endearing watching him, excited, curious, and a tad bit nervous, as he steps onto his flight.

Food Fantasy: An Analysis on what killed a Golden Goose (1/3)
So first things first, disclaimers! I do not claim nor pretend to know every nook and cranny, ins and outs of the history of FooFan's conception, existence and uncertain future. I do not own the game nor its characters, only the opinions and thoughts stated hereon out.
This was born to vent out my frustrations with how a game like this was abused poorly by its own developer and publisher instead of being nurtured to become its full potential that could have overshadowed and remained better than the likes of Tencent's Tales of Food --I could dream, but it honestly had the potential to be.
Out of respect for the main tag, I personally will not be tagging this post and the following two with the main tag. If you want to tag it yourself with it, that's your choice. Only followers of my blog will see this.
This analysis is divided into three parts: Funtoy, Elex, and the Community. It starts under the cut. Well let's get started.
Funtoy
Ah yes, the creator. The developer. You'd think that with their sudden rise to fame during their global launch, they'd have used the massive profits they earned within the first quarter of 2018 to improve certain things about the game and then trickled it down as quickly as possible towards Global, right? Yeah, I thought so too.
After playing the game since launch, I've seen and experienced way too many things that just hammer in the fact that this is one of the most unfair gacha I've played in years. Some reasons being the following:
(Note: These are experiences ONLY on Global's version, it may also apply to CN being the original server)
⊠The game's gacha model is aimed towards maximum predation on its players. F2p are forced to either spend some money (and thus tempt them to keep spending after getting a taste of it), or risk not even getting a good ascension of the unit to be useful at all. Paying for the event packs also doesn't guarantee that you would be able to secure a spot in the ranks. In fact, if you can't comprehend how the battle mechanics work, you could even de-rank. Fun way to burn that 800$, huh? At least you have the skin from rebates.
⊠A little less known thing and probably theoretical at worst, the long joked about spaghetti coding of the game along with an outdated spine technology for the sprites could very well be the reason why a 2D game like this experiences the shittiest lags. Also how easy it is to hack this game with the right know-how.
⊠Speaking of bad gameplay mechanics, did you know you could spend over fifty Mirrors and not get that final enhancement from +9 to +10 simply because there's absolutely no tangible safety net before +10?
⊠If you're F2P, this game is terrible in giving you resources to stockpile. Because Funtoy certainly doesn't have a lot of weekly/monthly or even friendly events wherein you can get resources without spending another kind of resource. The Hawthorne event's rewards are lackluster at best, Bingo is severely limited in what it gives, and Recall also doesn't give much for a big event that only happens (supposedly) every 6 months. Did I also mention that daily resource rewards also kinda suck compared to how much you burn in just one event?
⊠Monthly subs are a scam. Yes, you heard that right. My point of comparison here is Arknights. A monthly in AK allows you to have enough to 10-pull after 30 days, on top of a bit of stamina to help you. In FooFan? You have two monthly subs that do different things and even then, you won't have enough to 10-pull by the end of 30 days, nor is the stamina you get enough to even stockpile and ease the pressure of your need to save for the Gates or that stamina event that suddenly popped up.
⊠A conga line of 'Must procure this unit at a high ascension to do well in the following events!'. You missed the first Pizza event? Missed the first Turkey event? God forbid, you weren't able to 5* your Beer on his debut? Well sorry, that 5* Black Tea of yours isn't gonna do squat to give you good damage. No, your 2* B-52 also isn't going to do much of anything with his lackluster damage capabilities. If you want a chance to get those event URs again, you have to wait for their pool with laughably limited pulls... and a bloated price to even pull.
⊠The events starting after the first iteration of Turkey event get even more paywalled. As far as I remember, by the time Minestrone rolled around, an F2P with ample crystal resources can only get 2* at best. 3* and above are paywalled.
⊠The game has incompetent balancing. The devs themselves likely have little experience in gameplay design and balancing, especially for a game with a growing roster of characters . A prime example of them launching a character not knowing it would pretty much unbalance the game? Look no further than Beer. The guy had to have a couple of nerfs done to him because he was just too meta. You know what's sadder? Before the 'switch' to Brave meta, almost all meta units was built to benefit off the Beer meta.
⊠Artifacts. Do I even have to explain how the introduction of such a game feature so early into the lifespan of this game essentially fucked over the balance even more? Not to mention, all the more reason you'd be crying with the Gates of Trials demanding so much out of your stamina and crystal resources. F2Ps are again, the ones that suffer in this part. What's their reason? Profit, of course.
⊠The nerf of resto chests. This was the primary source for people who were saving up stamina for the Gates... until Funtoy decided they were being too generous to their playerbase and dropped the stamina probability rate to 1% or less.
⊠Terrible UI layout and design. Come on, be honest now, you've lost several thousand of your hard earned crystals buying screws in the fishing shop because you didn't notice that shiny warning in small text and a green button with the crystal image slapped on it, didn't you?
⊠Look at all these SRs! All of them! Wow, they even outnumber the Rs by at least 80! What's that? There's more URs now too compared to Rs and Ms combined? That can't be real. But seriously, you'd think Funtoy could make some of these SRs into Rs and add them to the perm pool/shard fusion so people aren't stuck pulling Macaron or Dorayaki every time. They could have also populated the Team Up rewards with SRs instead of Rs. But you know... that won't bring them profit. Haha... haha.... Oh and I haven't even told you about the SP class...!
⊠Lore. Yes, I'm sure by now you're aware that the in-game lore is different from the ones in the non-SP Food Soul bios, in the SP Food Soul bios that sort of ties in with the New World story (that global will never be getting btw). At this point, Funtoy handwaves the confusion away by saying, 'they're all different timelines'. Yes yes, an easy and cliche move to explain how shitty the writing direction went after a while. I don't know what happened, all I know is that lore got weird(er) when they introduced SP Rice.
⊠They. Keep. Adding. More. Characters! They fail to see that a lot of their earlier players have imprinted on the first few waves of Food Souls and they sadly also fail to properly give some of them more story expansion... or skins. At the moment, they're shelling out so many JP-centric Food Souls because... as I see it? They're pandering to the last bastion of whales they have.
⊠Merchandise. And I mean a variety of merchandise that isn't using the same official art every time. Like they couldn't afford to commission a couple of artists one or two times to make unique merchandise that would sell. They started too late on that train, and they even made it too hard for anyone not in CN or JP to even procure what already exists. Not to mention, they keep using the same 'popular' set of characters for their merchandise and never really expanding out to making merch for other characters.
These are all the things I can list off at the top of my head why Funtoy as a developer sucks ass. They could sweeten their words all they want, it won't change the fact that they've certainly made way too many bad decisions and found out about it too late, and now they're desperate to keep Food Fantasy alive to keep their profits coming in to make whatever that cat girl game they have and that supposedly 'side-game' FF2 they announced.
There may have been problems out of their control that I or you do not see, but one thing is for sure, they were blinded by greed for the money they were raking in on all their servers at the start, and never actually bothered to invest in more manpower in the right places to improve the game, both gameplay-wise and worldbuilding wise. It's actually saddening that this game could have been so much more with several QoLs and a more fleshed out lore, perhaps even spacing out the number of new units they keep introducing while going back to giving their old units more attention.
That's it for Funtoy. We're moving onto Elex in the next part and boy is that also a trip.
