February Excerpts - 16th February
Violins and Violets - Book One
Chapter Thirty-One
What little remained of my life was about to be twisted into something horrible. Papa would sell my violin in order to gild my dowry and make me more attractive to suitors. Mama would force me to sew a trousseau… or a wedding gown. Hans would be told - in a letter - just how much I had ruined and what was to be done about it, in order to show him what would happen if he too stepped out of line.
One more chapter to go, posting this evening at 8pm GMT!
I’m sharing excerpts of my first two “Violins and Violets” every day in February, at 8am and 8pm GMT. Stay tuned, dear friends!

How would cg!Mike deal with a little reader who's overtired and on the verge of a tantrum?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Definitely would be frustrated at first. You kept whining because he just couldn't understand you!
He sighs rubbing a hand over his face. He had gotten home around an hour ago and already brought Abby to bed, but now he was dealing with little you who was getting more worked up each time he tried to figure out what was bothering you.
"Listen, I'm really trying but you do need to tell me what's wrong for me to help you, alright?" he says standing before the TV and you crossed your arms pouting up at him from your position on the ground before the couch.
"Are you hungry?"
"No."
"You want to draw something?"
"Noooo."
He could see the tears well up in your eyes and he knows you're very close to a tantrum, which is the last thing he wants to happen after the day he had.
The moment you rubbed your eyes and let out a little yawn he sighed in relief at finally figuring out what got you so moody and whiny.
Without saying anything he turned off the TV, ignoring your grunt of disapproval and held his hand out for you, glad you comply and intertwined your fingers with his.
In his room you let out a surprised yelp when he suddenly picked you up and let himself fall back first on the bed with you on top of him, smiling a little when you started to giggle.
"So, I can either read to you or we listen to something, you choose baby." he offers and you sit up thinking for a moment.
"Read to me...pwease?"
5 minutes later you were in your jammies, cuddled up into Mike's side and watching him flip through the pages, the rumbling from his chest as he reads lulling you slowly to sleep.

That is delightful!! I love to crochet but I like knitting as well - I don't think any of my characters do it, though, other than Julia Schmidt. I'm adding to this from my writeblr, but I sent the ask from my main blog.
Albina, Dorota and Magdalena Fialová all make bobbin lace (that's how Albina and Dorota made their living before Dorota moved to Prague), and Dorota and Magdalena sing professionally. Dorota is a singing teacher, and Magdalena is an opera singer at the Malá Strana Opera House in Prague (as we see in "Violins and Violets"). The Fialová women are sopranos.
I think Ffion from "This Still Happens" should knit as well. One of the people who inspired her sews beautifully, designs gorgeous dresses and is a fantastic singer. Knitting is not out of the question for Ffion, but her life needs to settle down a bit first.
Marianne from "Vogeltje" is a seamstress, and like many young ladies of her era, can sing and play the harpsichord. Her adoptive sister, Augusta, learns the cello.
Then there are Katharina and Hans Schmidt in "Violins and Violets". Both play the harpsichord and violin, but also dabble in the cello. Of course they are both famous composers, inspired by Maria Anna and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, but Katharina also goes on to teach music to her friend Wilhelm.
Who paints? Draws?
Hiya! Can any of your OCs knit or crochet? Do any of them play musical instruments or sing?
Not sure about knitting or crocheting. i feel like the answer is yes but- oh fuck, lev in htp picks it up after they have kids. he goes full maternal, love that for him.
as for instruments, i have a list *shakes it out* lonan sings and plays piano, Renfrew plays violin, Cliff plays every instrument he can get his hands on, Taegan plays the piano and writes his own music, Mari plays the drums, sean plays the violin, im sure there's more, but as a bonus, Alice consumes music the way bookworms consume stories (voraciously)

An illustration for the last (non chronologically) scene that I wrote for Act 1. The introduction of the Order of Othala to the universe was a recent change that shook up the entire plot, the final part missing from the story for all these years.

February Excerpts - 13th February
Violins and Violets - Book One
Chapter Twenty-Six
Mama smiled, but it wasn’t her natural, genuine smile. It was tight around the edges, and her eyes were hard, as if she was only putting the smile on for show. I knew it was. I had never disappointed her so much in my life… that she knew of. “You may go back up to your room,” Papa said, “Bring your violin down here.” I smiled. “I’m to play?” I said. He jerked his chin, as if he didn’t want to commit more to his nod. “Bring it down,” he said.
I’m sharing excerpts of my first two “Violins and Violets” every day in February, at 8am and 8pm GMT. Stay tuned, dear friends!

I almost just rolled my eyes at Wasp’s line there. Thinking she was saying “Oh I’d rather be watching my soaps” but NO. NO in fact. “Julia” is a 1968 American sitcom that was one of the first popular American TV programs to star a woman of color. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julia_(American_TV_series) Even back here in 1968 Marvel was using its heroes “living in the real world” to break new ground by just casually dropping the fact that one of their most prominent heroines was a fan of a TV show that was bold and dangerous just by existing in the time that it did. This is why I google things when I read them, that detail rocks!

Karen Mathison Schmidt (American, born 1957) Edgewood Memory, 2012 oil on Gessoboard 24 x 24 inches Private collection Artist statement: 'I’m an artist living in the farm country of north Louisiana, along with my husband, our three cats and seven (yeah, 7!) dogs. I love to paint everything (including the walls in our house) and find constant inspiration in my daily life: dogs, cats, cows, horses, trees, fields, ponds and bayous, morning light, afternoon light ... you get the idea. My work is greatly inspired by the style of America’s Golden Age of Illustration, particularly the work of Howard Pyle, N. C. Wyeth, Maxfield Parrish, Jessie Wilcox Smith, Elizabeth Shippen Green and others. I’ve been painting my whole life, and I have sold my work to patrons all over the USA, Canada, the UK and Europe.”

A blank page is a place to list the creation we weren't given. A shopping list of eternity where we're never too sick to swallow fresh blueberries and where the dance never ends. A blank page is a paper bird to fold up and fly. I can't change anything but I am a poet and if I can't trust God I must speak for the world and my friends. Want more. Want so much more. Test each day and night for ripeness like a melon at the market. You're crucified on the hands of a clock, pull out those nails. I'm throwing you a rope of words. Hold on. - Julia Vinograd
