Fort Shaw Indian School Girls Basketball Team becomes World Champions at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, 1904.

The seven members of the original team included Genie Butch, Belle Johnson, Nettie Wirth, Minnie Burton, Emma Rose Sansaver, Josephine Langely, and Delia Gebeau.

Native American boarding schools, such as Fort Shaw, were integral to the United States' policy of cultural genocide for American Indians. World's Fairs also played a key role in affirming white supremacy and presenting American Indians as an uncivilized artifact of the past.

"EIGHT CONVICTED IN LANG STRIKE," Kitchener Record. May 17, 1934. Page 1 & 14. --- Woman Placed On Parole And Sentencing Of Others Deferred By Magistrate --- SOME CHARGES DISMISSED --- Attack On Tannery Worker And Rubber Employee By Kilbasa Started Fracas ---- Six men and one woman, found guilty on charges arising out of strike disorders at the plant of the Lang Tanning Company, were fined by Magistrate Weir in police court this afternoon. In each case, the option of a Jail term was given.

The following were fined $10 and costs or a month In jail on charges of obstruction: Josephine Gryzwama, Tony Kilibasa, Wm. Baggey and John Szmigilski. Thomas Meskal was fined $10 and costs with the option of a month in jail on a charge of assaulting police, while on charges of common assault, John Krewaki and Nick Wonsowich were fined $5 or ten days.

Eight convictions in twelve cases arising out of the Lang Tanning strike disturbances were registered in police court this morning. One woman Pauline Madrowski who was found guilty of using insulting language to a constable was placed on parole for six months. The remainder of the cases were adjourned until this afternoon for sentence.

Charges of obstruction against Tom Fortuna, vagrancy against Paul Feret, disorderly conduct against Stella Dutchak and mischief against John Ssmigilski and William Baggey were withdrawn by the crown.

Those found guilty were, John Szmigilski, obstruction; Thomas Maskel, assaulting peace officer; Joha Krzewski and Nick Wonsowich common assault; Pauline Madrowski, using insulting language to a peace officer and Josephine Gryswama, obstructing a peace officer.

Evidence Similar Oney Brown, Toronto barrister, represented the strike defendants. The evidence was virtually the same in every case. Tony Kilbasa, who recently was released from hospital, was charged with obstructing the police but no decision was reached in his case pending argument by the crown and defence counsel later in the afternoon.

Practically all the cases arose out of the fracas that was started when Kilbasa attacked Jacob Dorscht, a tannery worker and Edward Stumpf, an employee of the Canadian Goodrich when they were on their way to work on May 4 in the morning.

Kilbasa is alleged to have thrown a stone that hit Dorscht and the latter attacked Kilbasa with his dinner pail. Stumpf stated in evidence today he was also attacked by the defendants and like Dorscht he wielded his dinner pall on the accused.

This started a general melee in which the women who were in the crowd took part.

Claims No Obstruction Oney Brown insisted there was nothing to prove obstruction against Kilbasa. There was evidence of assault on his part and evidence of resisting arrest but no evidence of obstruction, Magistrate Weir stated he would reserve judgment in this case pending argument of counsel later in the afternoon.

William Baggey of Bridgeport whom evidence revealed threw a stone that broke the taxi window in which the police were trying to remove Kilbasa, was found guilty of obstruction. Thomas Moskel was charged with assaulting an officer. The evidence of police was that he threw two stones at the taxi cab and at the police when they were trying to arrest Kilbasa. Moskel stated he was merely looking on and claimed he did not throw any stone. Magistrate Weir stated he preferred to accept police evidence and found him guilty.

John Krzewski and Nick Wonsowich charged with common assault on John Sieber were found guilty after Sieber corroborated by the police told of the two men walking off the picket line and attacking him as he came out of the tannery at noon on May 2. P.C. Powell stat ed he was in the police car and saw the two men leave the picket line and go after Sieber. He followed in the car and saw them assault the worker. He immediately placed them under arrest.

Mary Uhryn Freed Mary Uhryn charged with disorderly conduct was given the benefit of the doubt by the magistrate. Police evidence was that she was inciting the crowd at the time Kilbasa was arrested A similar charge against Stella Dutchak was with drawn. Joséphine Gryzwama, ac cording to the stories told by the police, jumped on P. C. Howlett's back and was dragging at his arm as he was trying to place Kilbasa under arrest. Norman Kellerman, transport man, who was assisting the police on the morning of May 4. told the court he helped to take the woman away from Howlett. The magistrate found her guilty of obstruction.
