The Delos family are descendants of Apollo rather than Poseidon (easy mistake considering some of their abilities) but this series is my all time favourite comfort series and I’ve loved it for years, it’s been in my top 3 book series ever since I first started it (8 or 9 years ago) and rereading it recently as the two prequel books and a sequel got released has just made me fall in love with the story and characters all over again.

For this book review, I wanted to discuss my favorite comfort read, Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini. I first discovered this trilogy in highschool, as I am a big fan of anything Greek mythology. The books are a retelling of Helen of Troy and her lover, Paris. 

The main character of the books is Helen Hamilton, a seemingly ordinary girl from Nantucket, Massachusetts. As Helen is about to start her junior year of highschool, her world is turned upside down by the Delos family who have recently moved onto the island. The Delos family, unbeknownst to Helen, are a family of demi-gods who come from the rival house of Poseidon. They expose Helen’s true heritage to her as a descendant of Aphrodite and help teach her how to control her powers. While Helen is trying to figure out her new life as a Scion, she also has to figure out her feelings for Lucas. Helen must decide whether or not it is worth it to enact another Trojan War in order for her to be with her one true love.

This is a short read that is perfect for romance and Greek mythology lovers. The trilogy is perfect for weekend beach reads or lazy day plans.

2024 Reading Stats

Just a couple of quick notes from my Storygraph wrap-up to document some stats from this year's reading:

I read 121 books overall and nearly 44,000 pages! That's not as much as 2023 (both prelims and dissertation reading might've helped boost that number), but it's still a lot of reading. February, April, and May tied for most books read (but most pages in February? don't know how that happened). June (predictably) was the least. Maybe my travel reading will be better this year now that I finally downloaded Libby...

I technically had eight 5-star reads this year, but one was a reread. Pleasantly surprised to have a short story collection make it onto this list--and poetry! Only two 1-star reads (you have to work pretty hard to get a 1-star from me) which were The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek and Castle of the Cursed. Ask if you want a rant.

A couple other stats: Longest book: S.A. Chakraborty's The Empire of Gold Shortest book: Alice Oswald's Memorial Most read authors: S.A. Chakraborty, Josephine Angelini, and Seanan McGuire (three books each) New authors: 108 Number of rereads: 4

The only 2025 goal I'm setting is to read 70 books, which I think is actually 5 less than last year, but setting goals stresses me out. Can't wait to see what reads the New Year brings!

Not too bad of a day. I did a good amount of work, read, baked, and wore a nice outfit (the highlight being the bright, warm yellow socks 🌼 when everything else I'm wearing is black and white). I'm also starting to love candles🕯a lot. And I got more tea.
