“bellamy leaned back with a sigh and closed his eyes, wondering how long it would take until she stopped being the last person he thought about before he fell asleep.” you see i relate to this because i too am haunted by the memory of bellarke every night before i sleep.

Just a reminder that this is actually canon by Kass Morgan, the author who invented Clarke and Bellamy in the first place.
This is the canon of all canons. Keep it in mind, forever.

I'm only one chapter into the first The 100 book and Clarke is already such a badass? Like?? She was put in a single cell after attacking a guard and she punched Dr. Lahirir in the face after he gave her the bracelet? What a queen

The 100: Homecoming - Kass Morgan (7/10)
Tumblr media
Just as I write this, I realise I infact read the third book of the series, and not the first, or even the second.
No matter, though. While I don't know much about the events of the first and second book, this one adequately explained the important events.
I finished this book maybe a week ago, and I wrote up a review in my book directly after, I've simply been procrastinating typing it up (I'm an expert procrastinator...)
Either way, it may be because I havent read the other books in the series yet, but i don't think that this would be one of the books that sticks with me (to be fair, over the past 5 years only maybe 20 of probably around 500 have....), although I did enjoy it!
To my pre-written review, though.
I'd heard of the 100 many times in the past, although I'd never quite figured out the plot. Going into this movel, I'd assumed it was the first (quite wrongly) and when I'd realised, I couldnt particularly bother finding the first. And its not like this was a long read, finished it in just a few nights, with only an hour or so of reading each night.
Starting with the characters. I'll be honest, it wasnt too hard to figure out the main ones (as it switched between their perspectives). Bellamy, Wells, Clarke and Glass, but also Sasha and Luke, with Rhodes as the main villain.
This book opened from Glass' perspective, and it took me a while to gain my bearings (Likely because its the third book, and I havent read the first). Hers and Lukes side of the story seemed wholly unesscary to add in, and its not shown particularly often either. Mostly just flashes of her scared, confused, or acting in love with her boyfriend, Luke. Her prime motivator also appears to simply be Luke. I believe that her perspective was only added, as it was likely a main one in the other two stories...
Luke. In this book, he wasnt too fleshed out (potentially because they did that in the first book), but he seems like a nice moral and rule abiding guy.
Bellamy was probably my favourite. I found him a bit shallow in the start (although I had no background context), But he's funny, bold, loyal, and caring, although quite reckless. He's out of action and unable to fight for most of the story, due to one of the earlier events.
Clarke is said by Glass to be coldly professional, but if I'm being honest, I couldnt see that. She seems nice, seems to know her job, and in my opinion is really quite cool.
Wells seems cool too, and we definitely see parts of his past portrayed in his personality. He seemed quite a real and pretty good guy. Shame what happened to Sasha, though.
Sasha seemed like a sweet girl, she really didnt deserve her fate.
Rhodes. The novel really was quite good in portraying him as bad, and I'll be honest, I was quite disappointed by how they didnt kill him in the end, but i suppose it makes sense.
Now, onto the worldbuilding. I get the feeling that i probably missed most of that stuff, as itd have been in the first two books, but after a bit i did understand most of it fairly well.
The plot doesnt seem too original either. Group of teens, with the wrong authority figure, wishing to be able to control their own lives.... but either way it wasnt bad!
Overall, pretty good book. Its fame hyped it up a bit much, but eh. 7/10. Read if you wanna, it's interesting but not the type i'd fangirl about. Might read the first few books though, I'm interested in Bellamy.

I never got too deep into the tv series and honestly didn't even know it had a book adaptation but were there any big differences between them?
so many. to be fair to the show — with all the grace i'm willing to give jason rothenberg lmao — the show & the first book were developed at the same time from the same base concept kass had come up with for it.
that being said, here are some differences!
ㅤㅤㅤ•ㅤthe time between the nuclear apocalypse — called the cataclysm in the book — and the beginning of the story is 97 years in the show and 300 years in the books.
ㅤㅤㅤ•ㅤthe ark is referred to as the colony, and consists of three major “ships” (phoenix, arcadia & walden), rather than the 12 or so stations (medical, earth monitoring, agro, alpha, arrow, factory, hydra, mecha, prison, tesla, flint & orchid) on the ark.
ㅤㅤㅤ•ㅤin terms of comparability, phoenix & alpha seem to be the most “rich” of the stations / ships, and arcadia & walden being comparable to factory or mecha in terms of being the working class stations.
ㅤㅤㅤ•ㅤthe colony itself has a far more in depth look into the classism on it’s ships, with phoenix being the “upper class” ship where people can have a better life through their status and wealth, vs arcadia & walden being more “working class” where people struggle to get by and a lot of the ships resources are not allocated properly. there is also a law divide between the ships, as those on walden or arcadia are not allowed to travel between the ships to phoenix without permission, and doing so could result in punishment.
ㅤㅤㅤ•ㅤin the show, clarke & bellamy are the two main leads; in the books, there are four pov characters, with wells being one and another being glass sorenson, who isn’t in the show and doesn’t have any composite character there.
ㅤㅤㅤ•ㅤthere are no grounders in the books; instead the people found on the ground when the delinquents land are a rebellious offshoot of the main group known as the earthborn. however they are more equivalent to a “good” version of the mountain men; as their ancestors survived in the mountain bunker before leaving it 50 years before the books start. they are led by max walgrove.
ㅤㅤㅤ•ㅤas such, there are no grounders from the shows in the books. other characters from the show’s main group that don’t exist in the books : raven reyes, finn collins, john murphy, marcus kane, monty green, jasper jordan, harper mcintyre, eric jackson, nathan miller, etc etc.
ㅤㅤㅤ•ㅤlincoln also does not exist in the books but there is a character similar to him in concept — a person from earth falling in love with a sky person & being rebellious against their people — in max's daughter, sasha walgrove.
ㅤㅤㅤ•ㅤraven reyes also has a character similar to her in luke, glass's boyfriend. both are engineers who struggle to keep their loved one alive & suffer a leg injury some time into the show / book.
ㅤㅤㅤ•ㅤvarious name changes from show to book are: ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ•ㅤaurora blake is melinda blake. ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ•ㅤabby griffin is mary griffin. ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ•ㅤjake griffin is david griffin.
ㅤㅤㅤ•ㅤthe colony’s law follows the gaia doctrine, the ark follows the exodus charter.
ㅤㅤㅤ•ㅤthe skyboxis referred to as confinement or the detention center.
ㅤㅤㅤ•ㅤthe nuclear apocalypse (praimfaya or apocalypse one) is referred to as the cataclysm or the exodus.
ㅤㅤㅤ•ㅤthere’s no name for the tree in the show, but in the books, it’s referred to as the eden tree & it is set on fire by wells' in order to get himself sent down to earth.
ㅤㅤㅤ•ㅤoctavia is 16 in the show & 14 in the books. bellamy is 23 in the show & 20 in the books.
ㅤㅤㅤ•ㅤwhile clarke & bellamy are confirmed bisexual by the show & actors, it is unknown if kass intended for them to be bisexual in the books also. however, octavia is confirmed bisexual or mspec, as she has been shown to have crushes on wells & graham, & kissed a girl named anna.
SPOILER TERRITORY BELOW.
ㅤㅤㅤ•ㅤbellamy is wells' half brother, with wells’ father, chancellor jaha, who had slept with melinda blake before getting into a relationship with wells’ mother. as there are no described races in the books, the ethnicities of the boys & their parents are unknown. this did not carry over into the show, as bellamy is played by the half filipino, half white actor bob morley, & wells is played by the black actor eli goree.
ㅤㅤㅤ•ㅤbellamy & clarke are a confirmed couple in the books, having gotten engaged in the last book, rebellion.
ㅤㅤㅤ•ㅤmary & david griffin are revealed to be alive in homecoming, surviving unlike their counterparts in the show: jake (who died before the show started via being floated) & abby (who was murdered by russell lightbourne.)
this was a very long post & there are probably other differences but i'm in the process of rereading the books now so i'll reblog this with any others i find if i do!

“if you go, i’ll stay, you come back, i’ll be right here” but it’s clarke griffin giving her life so that bellamy blake and all her friends could make it to space, surviving through sheer will, and calling him on a radio every single day for six years until he could return to her and the home she built for them all.

WHY THE BOOKS ARE ALWAYS BETTER, AKA why writers should consider carefully before selling rights to their stories (AKA how Jason Rothenberg ruined the 100)
Sometimes I think about this, not particularly related to my beloved the 100, but to all fandoms that I love in general (The Hunger Games, the 100, Harry Potter, etc).
Why is the book always better?
Even those adaptations that do a good job are lukewarm at best when compared to the original masterpiece. Our favorite characters get washed out (Ginny Weasley, oh my soul 😭), blotted out altogether (Madge Undersee, looking at you!), killed off too soon (Wells Jaha, my sweet boy). WHY DO SCREENWRITERS MESS WITH THE STORY??
Bottom line, screenwriters are not the original writers. Which means they don't love these characters like the original writer does. So every decision they make (whether or not to include a scene, whether this or that character should make an appearance, etc) are made purely from the perspective of making a good movie/tv show that sells. Yes, they may still have that driving force of telling a good story, but ultimately they want the show to make money.
The writer makes his choices based on storytelling. If he includes a scene, or a character, or whatever, it is always because of storytelling. If he kills off a character it is because of storytelling not because he has a hidden agenda, a personal vendetta or is a plain jerk to his own fans.
Now on to The 100 controversy.
Kass Morgan wrote the books. The rights for the story to be adapted to a tv show were sold before the first book was even published. They had access to the first book manuscript, to base the storyline, but that was it. After that, the show was being produced at the same rate as the books, and they were free to take the plot wherever they wanted.
Jason Rothenberg was the show runner for The 100, and he did an amazing job on the first two seasons. Remarkably good, even though I missed some characters that didn't make the cut. But his storytelling was actually better than the first book and that is unheard of. It came to a point were the books became obscured by the tv show, and no one cared for the original plot. Halfway through it, he became insane. He started making decisions purely based off on shock value, or following trends for popular tv shows, with no regards whatsoever to the characters or whether or not that was fitting to their personal arc. He killed off at least three characters that I can think of, just because he had a peeve with the actors.
He became annoyed with the fandom because they were excited about a romantic relationship between the two leads of his show. A ship that was canon in the books, from book 1. A SHIP HE TOLD US WAS ENDGAME, because it was CANON. He specifically said it would be a slow burn, for us to take comfort reading the books and to wait because he would be making it worthwhile. Think of it like this: it's like you select a fanfic from AO3 that's tagged with your favorite OTP. You start reading it and it's good, there's a lot of hints to the romance building up, you're excited about how the story is going. 10 chapters of the story and nothing happens. 20 chapters, still nothing. 50 chapters and still nothing. The fandom became impatient with his back and forth with the two characters. He became annoyed that the fandom wanted him to do what happened in the book. So then he starts saying things like"What are you talking about? These characters have been platonic from the start! You're delusional!" (when we have screenshots form the actually scripts for their scenes and there's notes saying things like "A looks lovingly at B", or "B is jealous of A kissing that other person"). Then he goes on and sinks that ship. Irremediably. Unexplainably. Out of spite for the fans, for shipping and for the actors for supporting the ship.
While I do think the books aren't as good as the first two seasons of the show, I still prefer them to the whole tv show. Because its clear Kass cared for her characters and the story she was telling.
Spoilers ahead.

He actually makes Clarke kill Bellamy. Her soulmate. Her best friend. Her co leader. Like he wasn't happy with keeping them "platonic". No, let's just kill one of the characters so we can stop his whole shipping nonsense. Oh better yet, let's have the girl kill the boy.
And then he actually has the nerve to say that was the only possible solution because said actor asked for a bit of downtime, because said actors are married in real life and HAD A MISCARRIAGE WHILE FILMING HIS TV SHOW.
Still hate you Jason Rothenberg.
All the writers of the world: don't sell your story without reading the fine lines.
