To Edmund’s great pleasure, he and his father were glad to present Ambroise Community Railroad to Windenburg. While the addition of the railway station, alone, fascinated the townsfolk, they rejoiced over its finest feature: its direct route to Harlem.

Countess Potocka curtsies out, Mademoiselle Ducrest curtsies in
Countess Potocka takes a bow, at least for the time being. There are too many other authors I want to feature. After this extract from her memoirs, I will introduce another.
The episode with Marshal Davout's partridges is not the first appearance of the Davout couple in the Countess's memoirs. Here is how she introduced this twosome in her memoirs. Do note how warmly she smiles on young Anatole, the scion of an old and illustrious noble family, Gascon as it might be.
The Maréchale (1), austerely beautiful, was a woman of merit. She had been a pensioner of Madame Campan's school, where she had acquired refined ways, as well as the manners of polite society which her husband lacked; but she did not become well-liked, for she was not very amiable. She was said to be prey to constant jealousy because of the Marshal's fleeting love affairs, he who, like all Frenchmen, was infatuated with Polish women and seemed bothered by his wife's presence; for he had brought with him, moreover, a Frenchwoman who was said to be the very image of the Maréchale , and who, thanks to her appearance of a legitimate status, had followed the army, to the great displeasure of the Emperor.
The combination of all these circumstances meant that Madame la Duchesse put very little care into making her domestic establishment pleasant, and that her husband went to seek his amusements elsewhere.
The general's staff did not abound in distinguished individuals. M. Anatole de Montesquiou (2), who was very young at the time, was the only one of the aides-de-camp whom we saw with pleasure; his education was a match for his name.
(1) Aimée Leclerc, sister of General Leclerc, first husband of Pauline Bonaparte.
(2) Ambroise-Anatole-Augustin de Montersquiou-Fezenzac, 1788-1867. He served both Napoleon and the House of Orleans. Anatole de Monterquiou was a poet and playwright.

And now for another memoirist I want to introduce: Georgette Ducrest, the daughter of a fairly high-born nobleman who emigrated to England during the Revolution and who found himself uttely ruined by it. Mademoiselle Ducrest and her mother were invited by the divorced Josephine to join her in her chateau in Normandy in the winter of 1810-1811 (Joséphine having been asked to keep some distance away from Paris for a while after Napoleon's second marriage). At the time, I believe, Georgette had just barely turned nineteen. Starting in early December 1810, she and her mother spent five or six months with Josephine, but eventually made themselves unwelcome and were gradually excluded from Josephine's entourage when she returned to Malmaison in the spring of 1811. Georgette Ducrest is not so acidic as the Countess, but she has her moments. Here is her own portrait of Aimée Davout, in quite another tone:
At Malmaison, I saw again a person with whom I had had a rather close friendship before her marriage; I had the sweetest recollections of her: it was Mademoiselle Aimée Leclerc, who had become Princess of Eckmühl. The high status she had reached had not, it was said, changed anything in the attractiveness of her charming character. As beautiful as an angel, she was simple, modest and lenient. These qualities, which made her cherished when she was obscure and poor, were still enchanting after an ascendance which was considered by all to be the just result of Providence.
The Empress was particularly fond of her, and treated her with the highest consideration. After the Princess had left, Her Majesty praised her in a way which might have seemed exaggerated, had Josephine not been known for her truthfulness.
Ducrest, Georgette: Mémoires sur l’impératrice Joséphine. Mercure de France, 2004, p. 252
This is also available online. I will provide the link in my next instalment.
Here is my aside about la franchise de Joséphine. I have this intuition that Josephine did not let hard, cold facts stand in the way of telling a story in a more interesting way. I know Aimée Leclerc was married to Davout in a most hurried way. I'm not sure it happened quite the way Josephine tells it. Maybe this will be for a future post, but Mademoiselle Ducrest has other episodes to narrate. A post in the near future will be about her impressions of Eugène.

( cis man | he/him | keith powers ) —— isn’t that EVAN ROSIER? yeah that is them, sitting there at the SLYTHERIN table with those other SEVENTH years. when sybill looks into that crystal ball of hers, she sees bruised knuckles hidden by gold jewelry, kissing strangers, sun reflecting off a freshly waxed broom, the thrill of playing with fire, riling up others on purpose, confidence that could kill, fascination with darkness. anyway i’ve heard they’re pretty AUDACIOUS, ARROGANT, and EXPLOSIVE. apparently they’re a VENIT TEMPESTAS / DEATH EATER and PUREBLOOD but i’m sure that’s not related. —— [ leah : gmt+1 : 21 : she/her ]
⤜ BASICS.
full name: evan aurelius laurentis rosier birthday: march 15th, 1959 zodiac: aries gender: cis man pronouns: he/him/his sexuality: heterosexual extra: beater for slytherin’s quidditch team
⤜ PHYSICAL.
height: 6′2 weight: 182.3 lbs. eyes: brown hair: dark brown/black piercings: both ears, usually wearing small gold hoops tattoos: right bicep, right upper leg and calf, left calf, upper back, dark mark on his left wrist
⤜ PERSONALITY.
positive: bold, confident, audacious, intelligent, creative, playful, passionate, charming, flirty. negative: impulsive, invincibility-complex, cocky, selfish, self-centered, emotionally unavailable, temperamental, dishonest. short description: to evan, the world is his oyster. it revolves around him. the rosier family is the epitome of perfection personified, and evan was raised to carry that perfection on his back. he’s gotten good at putting up that façade though – creating the illusion that he’s just another perfect member of the rosiers. on the outside, he’s the picture of perfection and grace – just like the family mantra. when, in reality, he’s self-destructive. he’s quite the opposite of what his parents would like him to be. his confidence bleeds into unabashed arrogance, he believes he’s invincible to everything – the law and even death. not to mention, you can’t trust a single thing that spills from those pretty lips of his. he likes to live life on the edge and does anything for the thrill of it; or simply, because he can.
⤜ BIOGRAPHY.
evan is the second-born and only son of ambroise & irene rosier. he’s got a sister older by two years, josephine. evan’s childhood was nothing short of perfect. his parents showered him and his sister with anything they could have ever wanted. his birthday was always the event of the year, with a gala being thrown by the rosiers in his name. it was no surprise that evan turned out to be arrogant and disregarded other people’s opinions and feelings; there were barely any consequences for evan’s actions and he simply felt on top of the world.
he was taught, by any means necessary, the importance of good behavior and self-image – because his self-image directly reflected the family image, and the rosier family couldn’t be anything short of perfect and graceful. it’s the family mantra after all, right? unfortunately, evan didn’t like being told what to do. he had a knack for trouble and destruction. during his first year at hogwarts, he’d already gotten himself more detentions than his father ever has for his entire stay at the castle. it didn’t help that evan tended to get violent sometimes and became somewhat of a bully. irene would excuse each of his mistakes - so evan would never learn. ambroise taught him how to lie and have better control of his impulses instead of dealing with the problem. eventually evan would learn how to lie to his parents as well.
evan got the dark mark sometime during his fifth year. to him, blood purity was less about blood and more about social status. but at the end, evan wasn’t too concerned with the well-being of others, those outside of his circle. he was ambitious and knew what he wanted of life; he saw the death eaters as a hobby, a way to show off his skills in dark magic and have some fun. perhaps he just doesn’t realize how serious it all is, but evan was never one to take life seriously.
⤜ WANTED CONNECTIONS.
exes: maybe an ex-girlfriend that his parents had set him up with in high school, they probably had a toxic relationship because neither of them wanted to be in it. or maybe it was toxic but your muse wanted to be in it, actually loved evan despite how he treated her. another ex – someone he actually wanted to be with and probably loved despite his parents not really accepting that relationship.
friends: most likely other purebloods or slytherins. evan’s usual social circle.
the bro: his true bromance otb. this has been his best friend since first year or perhaps since they were children, they’ve been through everything together and they’re still as thick as thieves.
the sis: his girl best friend, it’s always been platonic between the two of them.
enemies
friends with benefits: this one’s pretty self-explanatory. layer in some angst with some of these relationships and we’re cooking with grease!
betrothed: evan’s still a gentleman when he wants to be, but one thing he doesn’t appreciate is having his freedom taken away. he’ll be respectful of the girl, but make it pretty clear that this marriage is just him doing his duty and he’s not likely to change his ways.

@magicspun plotted a starter.
she’s tired, exhausted - her title pulls her down like a crown of lead and there is nothing she can do to escape its weight. people are depending on her, people she sees and speaks with every day. they expect her to lead and more than that they expect her to do so successfully. but she has never led anyone in her life and no one has ever depended on her for anything beyond emotional comfort and at this point she isn’t certain she’s fit to provide even that much.
her feet carry her across the yard, this way and that, pacing in a attempt to stave off anxiety and other dark thoughts. josephine had mentioned that she needed her later in the day to entertain some foreign dignitaries and leliana needed something else and cullen needed YET ANOTHER something else. she mutters to herself, trying to keep all of it straight. there were other things she needed to do, but she was struggling to remember what.
it’s like this from time to time, her mind a muddled blur. she lifts her gaze and everything negative seems to seep out of her body when she catches sight of ambroise across the yard. a life line. something familiar that doesn’t make the jittery feeling in her stomach worse. she walks at first, but it soon breaks into a run and she kicks up a little cloud of dust as she skids to a halt at his side, fingers dipping down to take his hand in her own. ❝ where’ve you BEEN? ❞ it’s more demanding than she means it to be, fingers tightening around his, ❝ i’ve MISSED you. ❞

Josephine Lucchese (July 24, 1893 – September 10, 1974) was an American operatic soprano who had an active international singing career during the 1920s and 1930s. A skilled coloratura soprano, she was particularly admired for her portrayals of Rosina in The Barber of Seville, Violetta in La traviata, and the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor. She began her opera career in 1920 with the San Carlo Opera Company; a touring opera company in the United States. She was a resident artist with the Philadelphia Grand Opera Company from 1929-1932, and was a principal artist with the Dutch National Opera during the 1930s. She also appeared as a guest artist with American and European opera houses during her career. She made her professional singing debut soon after at Aeolian Hall in Manhattan on November 26, 1919 giving a recital of art songs and arias; including pieces from The Magic Flute, La sonnambula and Félicien David's La perle du Brésil.  A year later, on September 22, 1920, she made her professional opera debut as Olympia in Jacques Offenbach's The Tales of Hoffmann with Fortune Gallo's touring San Carlo Opera Company at the Manhattan Opera House.  She remained under contract with that company for the next five years; performing across the United States and Canada in such roles as Gilda in Rigoletto,  Lady Harriet Durham in Martha, Micaëla in Carmen, Rosina  in The Barber of Seville, Violetta in La traviata, and the title role in Lucia di Lammermoor.  In 1925 Lucchese performed Violetta to Dimitrie Onofrei [ro]'s Alfredo at the Academy of Music in the very first performance of the Philadelphia La Scala Opera Company. In 1926 she made her debut with the Philadelphia Grand Opera Company (PGOC) as Gilda to Millo Picco's Rigoletto. She later became a resident artist with the PGOC from 1929 until the company's bankruptcy in 1932, performing such roles as Konstanze in The Abduction from the Seraglio, Leïla in Les pêcheurs de perles, Rosina, Violetta, and the title role in Lakmé among others.  In 1933 she appeared in concert performances of Rigoletto and La traviata with the Philadelphia Orchestra before once again becoming a member of the San Carlo Opera Company. In 1939 she was a principal artist with Vito Parisi's Imperial Grand Opera Company.  Lucchese gave her first performance outside of the United States at the Teatro Nacional de Cuba in Havana, Cuba as Ophelia in Ambroise Thomas's Hamlet in 1923  She sang in another Thomas opera for her first performances in Europe; appearing as Philine in Mignon in a tour of German cities in 1927-1928.  During the 1930s she was a resident artist with the Dutch National Opera and appeared as a guest artist at several opera houses in the Netherlands.  She also appeared in opera houses in Berlin, Hamburg, and Prague. She became known as 'The American Nightingale' in Europe. Lucchese appeared as a guest artist in opera performances in several American cities during her career, including appearances at the Detroit Opera House and the Cincinnati Opera. Other roles she performed on stage during her career include Norina in Don Pasquale and Mimi in Puccini's La Bohème.  Her notable stage partners included Tito Schipa and Giovanni Martinelli.  She also sang in concerts with the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra.

Alma practically skipped home, paying no mind to the weight of the package in her arms that harbored such a lovely dress. She couldn’t wait to show her family. She knew Beth would count the days until she’d grow into it.
The tension in her home hit her before she was able to announce her arrival. Curses and complaints spewed from her mother’s mouth and bounced off every wall. Her father was home, which was odd because he often worked into the evening, and lying on the couch, groaning. It took a moment for Alma to understand why her mother was so upset. Josephine cursed the physician for not yet arriving. She cursed Pierre’s occupation for being both freelance and dangerous. Finally, she cursed her husband for purchasing a house that they wouldn’t be able to manage on a single wage due to his present injury and incapability of returning to work.
The situation startled Alma. She’d never seen her mother so frantic and her father so helpless. She believed there was so little she could do until a particular thought came to mind.
Alma informed her mother that she would return home, again, shortly. She retraced her steps back into town and to the boutique, paying no mind to the weight of the package in her arms that harbored such an expensive dress.

In the duration of a few days and against her mother’s pleas and demands, Alma accepted Douglas’s marriage proposal and agreed to move to the city with him.
Josephine’s disapproval couldn’t lessen the unwavering excitement Alma had for leaving Windenburg, nor did it affect Beth and Jeremiah’s happiness for their sister and Pierre’s pride in his daughter. As they drove away, Beth criticized their mother’s exaggeration.
On Douglas and Alma’s venture out of Windenburg, they made a stop by the Ambroise’s manor. Edwin hugged his family goodbye before leaving with his cousin and her fiancé during their travels up until they’d deliver him to the doorstep of a boarding house for drama and theatrics. Alma stood impressed by her uncle and aunt’s approval of Edwin’s leave, for which Celia took full praise.

The children of the family were thrilled to hear that Aunt Ida was in town. Every visit of hers came with new stories from her life outside of Windenburg and they fell over one another’s laps crowding around the parlor to hear her most recent ones.
The younger children’s ears perked during Ida’s comparisons between her experiences outside and their hometown - as none of them had ever left. The older children were more impressed by her reports about the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People that Ida advocated for. She shared their mission was to ensure political, educational, and equality of minority groups in order to eradicate racial intolerance. Ida traveled to the city from time to time, giving her firsthand access to the small but growing campaign. Alma and Edmund were at the edge of their seats. While they were aware of racism, they believed it uncommon because they’d never seen or experienced it. Again, they’d never been around many white people, either.
When Beth questioned the integration in Willow Creek, June glanced at her cousin - appalled by her obliviousness. Ida was more than happy to further educate her niece before Elijah cleared his throat from the hall, where he, Josephine, and Annette stood in discontent.
