"Bullitt" (1968) was director Peter Yates' first American film. He was hired after Steve McQueen saw his 1967 U.K. feature "Robbery," with its extended car chase. Joseph E. Levine, whose Embassy Pictures had distributed "Robbery," did not like the film much, but Alan Trustman, who saw the picture the week he was writing the "Bullitt" chase scenes, insisted that McQueen, his Solar Productions partner Robert Relyea and producer Philip D'Antoni (none of whom had ever heard of Yates) see "Robbery" and consider Yates as director for "Bullitt."
Bullitt is notable for its extensive use of actual locations rather than studio sets, most notably the city of San Francisco, California, and its attention to procedural detail, from police evidence processing to emergency-room procedures. Yates' use of the new lightweight Arriflex cameras allowed for greater flexibility in location shooting.
At the time of the film's release, the exciting car chase scenes featuring McQueen at the wheel in all driver-visual scenes generated prodigious excitement. Film critic Leonard Maltin has called it a "now-classic car chase, one of the screen's all-time best." Fellow critic Emanuel Levy wrote in 2003, "'Bullitt' contains one of the most exciting car chases in film history, a sequence that revolutionized Hollywood's standards."
Drivers' point-of-view shots were used to give the audience a participants' feel of the chase. Filming took three weeks, resulting in 9 minutes 42 seconds of pursuit. McQueen, a world-class racecar driver at the time, drove in the close-up scenes, while stunt coordinator Carey Loftin, stuntman and motorcycle racer Bud Ekins, and McQueen's usual stunt driver, Loren Janes, drove for the high-speed parts of the chase and performed other dangerous stunts.
Billy Fraker, the cinematographer for the film, attributed the success of the chase sequence primarily to the work of the editor, Frank P. Keller.
The editing of the scene was not without difficulties. Noted editor Ralph Rosenblum wrote in 1979, "Those who care about such things may know that during the filming of the climactic chase scene in 'Bullitt,' an out-of-control car filled with dummies tripped a wire which prematurely sent a costly set up in flames, and that editor Frank Keller salvaged the near-catastrophe with a clever and unusual juxtaposition of images that made the explosion appear to go off on time." So I just finished watching most of the Giallo/horror films Carroll Baker made during her time in Italy from 1967- 1975, and I loved all of them! They all have their own lurid, stylish, and gruesome retro charm.
The first four posters are her film collabs with director Umberto Lenzi, the fifth pic is her on the set of So Sweet, So Perverse with Lenzi and Trintignant, and the last three films were directed by Romolo Guerrieri, Corrado Farina, and Luigi Scattini, who were some of the finest B-movie directors in Europe.
So how did a famous Old Hollywood actress like Carroll Baker ended up filming sleazy Giallos in Italy? As seen in Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, many American actors would bitch about having to go to Europe for work (aka DiCaprio’s character).
She was blacklisted by creepy producer, Joseph E. Levine, after he tried to control her career with an iron fist, cheat her out of money, and possibly tried to sleep with her for roles. After a divorce and the snub from Hollywood, Carroll made the right move by going to Europe, becoming fluent in Italian, and networking with local directors.
Carroll’s Italian films were panned in the USA, as stuffy Americans film critics saw her venture as a downgrade from working with the likes of Elia Kazan, George Stevens and John Ford. In reality, many Old Hollywood movies seem dated and sterile, whereas Euro cinema of the 60s/70s retains a fresh, artistic, innovative vibe even today and a dedicated cult following.
She said of that period of her career:
"I think I made more films [there] than I made in Hollywood, but the mentality is different. What they think is wonderful is not what we might ... it was marvelous for me because it really brought me back to life, and it gave me a whole new outlook. It's wonderful to know about a different world."

Recommend queer books for my 30 books in November challenge!
I want to read 30 books in November and I'd love to add more queer fiction to my list.
I'd especially like anything released in the last five years. Graphic novels are very welcome (for when I need something lighter), and I'll also take Snowbaz recs of at least 40k (for the same reason, but only two or three and ideally lesser-know/actiony/magic mishap). Please make suggestions and reblog!
I'll aim to post short reviews as I go to keep me accountable. If anyone's curious, I've included the tbr books I already own and could be reading below the cut (not all queer).
In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan
In Memoriam by Alice Winn
Penance by Eliza Clark
All For The Game by Nora Sakavic (currently reading first book)
The Devil In The White City by Erik Larson
Captive Prince by C. S. Pacat
Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan
Rosemary's Baby by Ira Levin
The House on the Strand by Daphne du Maurier
Fledgling by Octavia E. Butler
The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K. Le Guin
Heartstopper Vol 2 onwards
The Echo Wife by Sarah Gailey
Camp! by Paul Baker
A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske
Hell Followed With Us by Andrew Joseph White
All That's Left in the World by Erik J. Brown

Quote
I’d learned one very simple trick: say yes. Simply say yes. Like Joseph E. Levine, on “The Producers,” said, “The curly-haired guy—he’s funny looking. Fire him.” He wanted me to fire Gene Wilder. And I said, “Yes, he’s gone. I’m firing him.” I never did. But he forgot. After the screening of “Blazing Saddles,” the head of Warner Bros. threw me into the manager’s office, gave me a legal pad and a pencil, and gave me maybe twenty notes. He would have changed “Blazing Saddles” from a daring, funny, crazy picture to a stultified, dull, dusty old Western. He said, “No farting.” I said, “It’s out”… You say yes, and you never do it.

«Sixty years ago today, in the midst of taking the world of cinema by storm, Federico Fellini's seminal 8½ had its Midwest premiere on swinging Rush Street at the upscale Carnegie Theatre. Joseph E. Levine's Embassy Pictures, looking for a crossover hit, initially released the film in the USA.»

Have you seen 'A Bridge Too Far? 🎬
In the reel, you can see a legendary scene from the famous 1977 film 'A Bridge Too Far'. This film is about Operation Market Garden, which started exactly 80 years ago today. The plan of the Allies was to cross the German border via the Netherlands so that the war could be ended in 1944. For this, all bridges across the Dutch rivers had to fall intact into allied hands. It would be a combined air and land operation of English, American, Canadian and Polish troops. The air operation was known under the codename Market and the land operation under the name Garden.
A Bridge Too Far is a historical war film that was directed by Richard Attenborough and was released in 1977. It stars a big ensemble cast including Sean Connery, Ryan O'Neal, Michael Caine, Paul Maxwell, Dirk Bogarde, Edward Fox, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, Sir Laurence Olivier, Robert Redford and many other renowned actors. The film is based on Operation Market Garden, an unsuccessful attempt by the Allied forces to seize control of key bridges in Nazi-occupied Holland, and is adapted from Cornelius Ryan's book of the same name.
General James M. Gavin, left, (RYAN O'NEAL) confers with Lt. Col. "Joe" Vandeleur (MICHAEL CAINE), commander of the Irish Guards tank unit, about the desperate plight of the British 1st Airborne soldiers in the Arnhem sector, isolated and vastly outnumbered by German forces on the ground in Joseph E. Levine's "A Bridge Too Far", a United Artists release.

The true story of the greatest battle of World War II and the basis of the 1977 film of the same name, directed by Richard Attenborough.
The Battle of Arnhem, one of the most dramatic battles of World War II, was as daring as it was ill-fated. It cost the Allies nearly twice as many casualties as D-Day.
This is the whole compelling story, told through the vast cast of characters involved. From Dutch civilians to British and American strategists, its scope and ambition is unparalleled, superbly recreating the terror and suspense, the heroism and tragedy of this epic operation.
'I know of no other work of literature of World War II as moving, as awesome and as accurate in its portrayal of human courage.' - General James A Gavin
‘A Bridge Too Far’ is available to watch and stream, download, and buy on demand at Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Amazon, and Google Play online.

1, 2, 11, 18!! i need some more stuff to pick up
The Starling House by Alix E. Harrow! I am about half way through and I've really enjoyed it so far. It's a gothic/dark/contemporary fantasy. The town featured reminds me of my own town, actually.
2. Gwen and Art Are Not In Love by Lex Croucher. It was okay! I felt the romance was very rushed tbh, but beyond that I had a good time reading it. The landing just didn't stick quite right for me due to the romance being very quick.
11. Catch 22 by Joseph Heller is one of my top favorites of all time. The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield is also another I've really enjoyed rereading. Real World by Natsuo Kirino is great as well. Bad Monkeys by Matt Ruff is also a great reread, even when you know the twists.
and okay these are middle grade but cinderella retellings are a huge guilty pleasure of mine. obv Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. But also the Just Ella series by Margaret Peterson Haddix is like....my favorite. I was obsessed as a child. I read it like 30 times and that is not an exaggeration haha. The library was probably going ??? about that.
18. Hm hard since I could say an hour for a smaller book haha. But my record for size/time ratio would probably be the aforementioned Catch 22 which took around 8ish hours. I had to read it again and force myself slower since it was originally for school. when i get hyper focused on a book its hard for me to stop.

For the book stacks: royalty
Behold my precariously-balanced monster-stack of fairy tales, fantasy, history, and a couple of metaphorically-titled children! If it has a royal in the book or a royal in the title, it's on the stack! I was going to let the larger series be represented by a single book, but as the stack grew, it became a matter of honor to get them all into one pile.
Books in the stack:
The Romanovs by Lindsey Hughes
Stories from the Blackberry Bushes by @isfjmel-phleg, compiled by @fictionadventurer
The Innocence of Father Brown by G.K. Chesterton (for "The Sins of Prince Saradine")
The Everyman's Library editions of English Fairy Tales by Joseph Jacobs and Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales
Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales
The Electrical Menagerie by Mollie E. Reeder
Around the World in Eighty Days and Michael Strogoff, the Courier of the Czar by Jules Verne
Entwined by Heather Dixon
Murder in the Cathedral by T.S. Eliot

Bella at Midnight by Diane Stanley
Silver Woven in My Hair by Shirley Rousseau Murphy
A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett
The Little Princess of Tower Hill by L.T. Meade
Dear Mister Rogers by Fred Rogers (for mentions of King Friday XIII)
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair, The Horse and His Boy, The Magician's Nephew, and The Last Battle by C.S. Lewis
Woodwalker by Emily B. Martin

Однако, сочетание неудачной боевой тактики, ошибочных разведданных, невезения и плохой погоды привело к катастрофе.
