Hugh Masekela
Hugh Ramapolo Masekela (4 April 1939 – 23 January 2018) was a South African trumpeter, flugelhornist, cornetist, composer and singer. He has been described as the "father of South African jazz." Masekela was known for his jazz compositions and for writing well-known anti-apartheid songs such as "Soweto Blues" and "Bring Him Back Home". He also had a number 1 US pop hit in 1968 with his version of "Grazing in the Grass".
Early life
Masekela was born in KwaGuqa Township, Witbank, South Africa to Thomas Selena Masekela, who was a health inspector and sculptor and his wife, Pauline Bowers Masekela, a social worker. As a child, he began singing and playing piano and largely was raised by his grandmother, who ran an illegal bar for miners. At the age of 14, after seeing the film Young Man with a Horn (in which Kirk Douglas plays a character modelled on American jazz cornetist Bix Beiderbecke), Masekela took up playing the trumpet. His first trumpet, from Louis Armstrong, was given to him by Archbishop Trevor Huddleston, the anti-apartheid chaplain at St. Peter's Secondary School now known as St. Martin's School (Rosettenville).
Huddleston asked the leader of the then Johannesburg "Native" Municipal Brass Band, Uncle Sauda, to teach Masekela the rudiments of trumpet playing. Masekela quickly mastered the instrument. Soon, some of his schoolmates also became interested in playing instruments, leading to the formation of the Huddleston Jazz Band, South Africa's first youth orchestra. By 1956, after leading other ensembles, Masekela joined Alfred Herbert's African Jazz Revue.
From 1954, Masekela played music that closely reflected his life experience. The agony, conflict, and exploitation South Africa faced during the 1950s and 1960s inspired and influenced him to make music and also spread political change. He was an artist who in his music vividly portrayed the struggles and sorrows, as well as the joys and passions of his country. His music protested about apartheid, slavery, government; the hardships individuals were living. Masekela reached a large population that also felt oppressed due to the country's situation.
Following a Manhattan Brothers tour of South Africa in 1958, Masekela wound up in the orchestra of the musical King Kong, written by Todd Matshikiza.King Kong was South Africa's first blockbuster theatrical success, touring the country for a sold-out year with Miriam Makeba and the Manhattan Brothers' Nathan Mdledle in the lead. The musical later went to London's West End for two years.
Career
At the end of 1959, Dollar Brand (later known as Abdullah Ibrahim), Kippie Moeketsi, Makhaya Ntshoko, Johnny Gertze and Hugh formed the Jazz Epistles, the first African jazz group to record an LP. They performed to record-breaking audiences in Johannesburg and Cape Town through late 1959 to early 1960.
Following the 21 March 1960 Sharpeville massacre—where 69 protestors were shot dead in Sharpeville, and the South African government banned gatherings of ten or more people—and the increased brutality of the Apartheid state, Masekela left the country. He was helped by Trevor Huddleston and international friends such as Yehudi Menuhin and John Dankworth, who got him admitted into London's Guildhall School of Music. During that period, Masekela visited the United States, where he was befriended by Harry Belafonte. He attended Manhattan School of Music in New York, where he studied classical trumpet from 1960 to 1964. In 1964, Makeba and Masekela were married, divorcing two years later.
He had hits in the United States with the pop jazz tunes "Up, Up and Away" (1967) and the number-one smash "Grazing in the Grass" (1968), which sold four million copies. He also appeared at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, and was subsequently featured in the film Monterey Pop by D. A. Pennebaker. In 1974, Masekela and friend Stewart Levine organised the Zaire 74 music festival in Kinshasa set around the Rumble in the Jungle boxing match.
He played primarily in jazz ensembles, with guest appearances on recordings by The Byrds ("So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star" and "Lady Friend") and Paul Simon ("Further to Fly"). In 1984, Masekela released the album Techno Bush; from that album, a single entitled "Don't Go Lose It Baby" peaked at number two for two weeks on the dance charts. In 1987, he had a hit single with "Bring Him Back Home". The song became enormously popular, and turned into an unofficial anthem of the anti-apartheid movement and an anthem for the movement to free Nelson Mandela.
A renewed interest in his African roots led Masekela to collaborate with West and Central African musicians, and finally to reconnect with Southern African players when he set up with the help of Jive Records a mobile studio in Botswana, just over the South African border, from 1980 to 1984. Here he re-absorbed and re-used mbaqanga strains, a style he continued to use following his return to South Africa in the early 1990s.
In 1985 Masekela founded the Botswana International School of Music (BISM), which held its first workshop in Gaborone in that year. The event, still in existence, continues as the annual Botswana Music Camp, giving local musicians of all ages and from all backgrounds the opportunity to play and perform together. Masekela taught the jazz course at the first workshop, and performed at the final concert.
Also in the 1980s, Masekela toured with Paul Simon in support of Simon's album Graceland, which featured other South African artists such as Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Miriam Makeba, Ray Phiri, and other elements of the band Kalahari, with which Masekela recorded in the 1980s. He also collaborated in the musical development for the Broadway play, Sarafina! and recorded with the band Kalahari.
In 2003, he was featured in the documentary film Amandla!: A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony. In 2004, he released his autobiography, Still Grazing: The Musical Journey of Hugh Masekela, co-authored with journalist D. Michael Cheers, which detailed Masekela's struggles against apartheid in his homeland, as well as his personal struggles with alcoholism from the late 1970s through to the 1990s. In this period, he migrated, in his personal recording career, to mbaqanga, jazz/funk, and the blending of South African sounds, through two albums he recorded with Herb Alpert, and solo recordings, Techno-Bush (recorded in his studio in Botswana), Tomorrow (featuring the anthem "Bring Him Back Home"), Uptownship (a lush-sounding ode to American R&B), Beatin' Aroun de Bush, Sixty, Time, and Revival. His song "Soweto Blues", sung by his former wife, Miriam Makeba, is a blues/jazz piece that mourns the carnage of the Soweto riots in 1976. He also provided interpretations of songs composed by Jorge Ben, Antônio Carlos Jobim, Caiphus Semenya, Jonas Gwangwa, Dorothy Masuka and Fela Kuti.
In 2006 Masekela was described by Michael A. Gomez, professor of history and Middle Eastern and Islamic studies at New York University as "the father of South African jazz."
In 2009, Masekela released the album Phola (meaning "to get well, to heal"), his second recording for 4 Quarters Entertainment/Times Square Records. It includes some songs he wrote in the 1980s but never completed, as well as a reinterpretation of "The Joke of Life (Brinca de Vivre)", which he recorded in the mid-1980s. From October 2007, he was a board member of the Woyome Foundation for Africa.
In 2010, Masekela was featured, with his son Selema Masekela, in a series of videos on ESPN. The series, called Umlando – Through My Father's Eyes, was aired in 10 parts during ESPN's coverage of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The series focused on Hugh's and Selema's travels through South Africa. Hugh brought his son to the places he grew up. It was Selema's first trip to his father's homeland.
On 3 December 2013, Masekela guested with the Dave Matthews Band in Johannesburg, South Africa. He joined Rashawn Ross on trumpet for "Proudest Monkey" and "Grazing in the Grass".
In 2016, at Emperors Palace, Johannesburg, Masekela and Abdullah Ibrahim performed together for the first time in 60 years, reuniting the Jazz Epistles in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the historic 16 June 1976 youth demonstrations.
Social initiatives
Masekela was involved in several social initiatives, and served as a director on the board of the Lunchbox Fund, a non-profit organization that provides a daily meal to students of township schools in Soweto.
Personal life and death
From 1964 to 1966 he was married to singer and activist Miriam Makeba. He was the father of American television host Sal Masekela.
Masekela died in Johannesburg on the early morning of 23 January 2018 from prostate cancer, aged 78.

[The] Reina–Valera is a Spanish translation of the Bible originally published in 1602 until[1] United Bible Societies in 1909 revised the earlier translation produced in 1569 by Casiodoro de Reina. This translation was known as the " Biblia del Oso" (in English: Bear Bible)[2] because the illustration on the title page showed a bear trying to reach a container of honeycombs hanging from a tree. ***NOTE: State of California [3] Since that date, it has undergone various revisions notably those of 1602, 1862, 1909, 1960, 1977, 1995,[1] and more recently in 2011. Contents 1 History 1.1 Starting point 1.2 Edition by Cipriano de Valera 1.3 Further revisions 1.4 Unofficial revisions 2 See also 3 References 4 Further reading 5 External links History[edit] Starting point[edit] Casiodoro de Reina, a former Catholic monk of the Order of St. Jerome, and later an independent Lutheran theologian,[4] with the help of several collaborators[5] produced the Biblia del Oso, the first complete Bible printed in Spanish. (Earlier translations, such as the 13th-century Alfonsina Bible, translated from Jerome's Vulgate, had been copied by hand.) It was first published on September 28, 1569, in Basel, Switzerland.[6][7] The translation was based on the Hebrew Masoretic Text (Bomberg's Edition, 1525) and the Greek Textus Receptus (Stephanus' Edition, 1550). As secondary sources, de Reina used the Ferrara Bible for the Old Testament and the Latin Edition of Santes Pagnino throughout. For the New Testament, he was greatly aided by the translations of Francisco de Enzinas and Juan Pérez de Pineda. The 1569 version included the deuterocanonical books within the Old Testament and the 1602 version included the deuterocanonical books sandwiched between the Old and New Testaments. Edition by Cipriano de Valera[edit] In 1602 Cipriano de Valera, a student of de Reina, published a revision of the Biblia del Oso which was printed in Amsterdam in which the deuterocanonical books were placed in a section between the Old and New Testaments called the Apocrypha.[8] Among the reasons for the revision was the fact that in the intervening period words had changed their meanings or gone out of use.[9] For a time, it was known simply by de Valera's name.[10] Further revisions[edit] The British and Foreign Bible Society, the American Bible Society and the United Bible Societies published a total of fifteen revisions between 1808 and 1995[10] of which those of 1909, 1960 and 1995 are the most significant today and remain in print[1] and a further revision appeared in 2011. Modern editions often omit the Apocrypha. The principle behind these revisions has been to remain as close to the original Reina–Valera as possible without causing confusion or misunderstanding.[11] Even the 1995 New Testament is based on the traditional Textus Receptus despite the fact that the United Bible Societies use modern critical Greek texts as the basis for other translations.[12] It retains the traditional form of the name of God, "Jehov" (with the notable exceptions of the Nueva Reina Valera 1990, revision which replaces "Jehová" with "El Eterno" and the Reina Valera Contemporánea, revision of 2011 which replaces "Jehová" with "El Señor"). In addition, it uses for the second-person plural the pronoun "vosotros" (except for the Reina Valera Contemporánea which replaces "vosotros" with "ustedes"), which is obsolete outside Spain.[13] Apart from updating the vocabulary where necessary, its major innovations lie in the area of visual presentation: Hebrew verse is printed in a way that reflects its structure rather than as if it were prose, and while the numbering of verses has been retained the text is laid out clearly in paragraphs.[14] Since the resurgence of the King James Only movement in the United States (and its exportation to other countries), there has been much debate among Christian groups who use the Reina–Valera Bible. However, the 1960 revision became the common Bible of many millions of Spanish-speaking Protestants around the world, surpassing the 1909 in its reception. Almost all Hispanic churches use it, despite further attempts to revise it (for example, the unofficial Reina–Valera-Gomez revision). The Reina–Valera Bible is one of the Bible translations authorized to be used in Spanish-language services of the Church of Christ, Scientist,[15] the Anglican Communion as well as by many religious groups.[16][17] Unofficial revisions[edit] The 1602 Purified Bible done in Monterrey, Mexico, by advocates of King James Onlyism. The First edition was printed in 2001, with the Second Edition in 2002. Their purpose was to create (or rather, to restore) a Spanish-language bible which honored and remained true to the old Reina-Valera Castellan Spanish. The Reina–Valera 1865, made by Dr. Ángel H. de Mora of Spain, and subsequently printed by the American Bible Society. The ABS continued to reprint this Valera edition until the 1950s. It was reprinted again in the year 2000 by the Local Church Bible Publishers of Lansing, Michigan, and the Valera Bible Society of Miami, Florida. The Reina–Valera–Gómez Bible, a revision of the 1909, done in Matamoros, Mexico, by advocates of King James Onlyism.[18][19] The Trinitarian Bible Society has been working on a revision of the Valera 1909. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) published in 2009 their first official Spanish edition of the Bible based on the 1909 Reina–Valera edition, with "a very conservative update of outdated grammar and vocabulary".[20][21] See also[edit] Wikisource has original text related to this article: Biblia Reina–Valera 1909 Wikimedia Commons has media related to Biblia Reina-Valera. (LAS VEGAS) — A police officer was on life support Tuesday after being shot during a protest on the Las Vegas Strip, the latest in a handful of attacks on police amid demonstrations across the country over the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
The 29-year-old officer in Las Vegas was shot as police tried to disperse a large crowd of protesters in front of a casino shuttered because of the coronavirus.
At about the same time and less than three miles away, police outside a federal courthouse shot a protester who was wearing a black tactical vest and armed with two handguns and a rifle. Police said the man was shot as he reached for a firearm.
In other violence around the country, four officers were shot and wounded in Missouri and others in New York were hurt when a car plowed into a line of police.
“With these protests, which are leading to riots, one tragedy is only leading to another,” said Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo, who heads the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
The incidents came amid chaotic scenes that followed peaceful protests over the killing of Floyd, police brutality and racism. A number of cities have seen heavy-handed riot tactics by police and clashes between officers and demonstrators..
On Monday night, as protests started to dwindle in St. Louis, four officers standing in a line were shot and injured when someone opened fire. All four were expected to recover. In the same city several hours later, police said four officers in a marked police car were fired on by men in a car.
Police in Buffalo, New York, said an SUV broke through a police blockade at a protest and ran over a state trooper, breaking his leg and shattering his pelvis. Another trooper and a Buffalo police officer were also hit by the vehicle and treated for minor injuries.
In Madison, Wisconsin, police Chief Vic Wahl said police officers were struck with rocks and projectiles.
Over the weekend, police in Los Angeles reported rocks and other objects rained down on police at a demonstration near an outdoor mall, leaving one officer with a fractured skull. In Oakland, California, violence Friday night left 13 officers injured and a federal officer was fatally shot from an unidentified vehicle while providing security at a courthouse during a protest. Dave Patrick Underwood, 53, died and another officer was critically wounded, authorities said.
Lombardo said officers in Las Vegas were being hit by rocks and bottles when a shot rang out and the officer, Shay Kellin Mikalonis, went down on the casino-lined Las Vegas Strip.
Police said Mikalonis, a Las Vegas police officer for four years, was shot from across the street and 20-year-old Edgar Samaniego of Las Vegas was identified by video before he was later arrested on suspicion of the shooting.
Jail and court records showed Samaniego was being held pending an initial court appearance on attempted murder and weapon charges. An attorney who represented Samaniego in a personal injury lawsuit in 2016 declined to comment, saying he was not immediately representing him on the criminal charges.
Deputy Police Chief Chris Jones told reporters the man killed by police near the courthouse, 25-year-old Jorge Gomez of Las Vegas, had one of his three handguns mounted in what Jones called a “carbine conversion kit” that officials say made it resemble a rifle.
Gomez remained near the courthouse after police ordered what the deputy chief called “rowdy” demonstrators to disperse, and was hit several times with beanbag projectiles before he was shot as he raised a gun toward officers who were helping an officer on the ground, Jones said.
Lombardo and local officials pleaded multiple times in recent days for events to remain peaceful. They have so far resisted calls to impose a curfew in Las Vegas.
Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak said Tuesday he was praying for the “officer who was senselessly shot” and “all of the communities across Nevada who are experiencing grief and pain.”
“It’s during these trying times we must remind ourselves that creating a state where justice and peace exist together in partnership, not as a binary choice, is the goal we must all work toward,” he said.
Sisolak said he was activating “additional” members of the Nevada National Guard to support state and local law enforcement at the protests. He initially deployed the Guard over the weekend. The governor’s office said the Guard units would not be making arrests or doing crowd control but would “focus on protecting critical facilities, preserving public safety, and allowing individuals to exercise their rights to peacefully demonstrate.”
Monday’s protest began near President Donald Trump’s non-casino hotel, Trump International Tower, just off the Las Vegas Strip and remained peaceful for more than four hours.
“All night long, everybody worked hard to keep everybody safe,” said U.S. Marshal Gary Schofield, head of the local federal security agency involved with police in the shooting in front of the courthouse. “Unfortunately, criminals hijacked the event.”

Published: November 09, 2018
On Saturday, November 10, at Chicago’s UIC Pavilion, two quarter final fights will take place as part of season two of the World Boxing Super Series Cruiserweight Tournament. Krzysztof Glowacki (30-1, 19 KO), from Walcz, Poland, will face Maksim Vlasov (42-2, 25 KO) of Samara, Russia, in a 12-round battle for the Interim WBO World Championship. Additionally, Mairis Briedis (24-1, 18 KO) from Riga, Latvia, will take on Hamburg, Germany’s Noel Mikaelian (23-1, 10 KO) for the WBC World Diamond Belt Championship.
Ahead of the fights, Frontproof Media was able to speak with three of the fighters along with Leon Margules, President of Warriors Boxing Promotions, the United States promotional partner for the World Boxing Super Series.
Leon Margules – President of Warriors Boxing Promotions
FP: We’re here with Leon Margules, the head of Warriors Boxing. First, welcome back to Chicago.
LM: Thank you. It’s good to be back.
FP: It’s been about a year and half since you last put a show on here.
LM: Has it been that long?
FP: I believe it was – June 2017 – I think.
LM: I don’t remember. Too many places, too many shows.
FP: So you guys have been busy, just outside of Chicago?
LM: Yes.
FP: Is there a reason you haven’t been in Chicago in a year and half?
LM: Just business and opportunities. No reason not, or to, be in Chicago.
FP: How did you get involved with the World Boxing Super Series?
LM: They came to me and asked to come on as their legal counsel and also as a boxing consultant when they decided to get involved in the Cruiserweight division, as I was heavily invested in Cruiserweights.
FP: Cruiserweights aren’t exactly popular in America.
LM: No, but they should be. They’re big, fast, strong athletes.
FP: And there are a lot of men between 175 and 200 pounds.
LM: And they’re the same fighters that had us all excited about the heavyweight division when Joe Louis was heavyweight champion at 185 or Ali fought Frazier at 203, you know . . . they were cruiserweights.
FP: Are you mostly involved with cruiserweights overseas?
LM: No. I started with the Polish community, as you know. I have Wlodarczyk who was two time world champion at cruiserweight, same stable was Glowacki. Then I got involved with Gassiev who did very well the first season [of the WBSS], and just from there... but mostly because of my Polish business.
FP: Junior Wright, from Evanston, is the cruiserweight I remember from two of your cards.
LM: You know, it’s funny, I tried to sign Junior Wright, but he made a deal with Dmitry Salita instead. His option.
FP: Is he still boxing?
LM: Yeah, he was supposed to fight . . . he made a deal to fight in Orlando, October 20th against Keith Tapia, as an alternate fight in the World Boxing Super Series, and he pulled out and we went with Mike Perez instead.
FP: How do you think the cruiserweights in the World Boxing Super Series are going to be received here in America?
LM: I think well, because they’re great fights. They’re well matched. They’re exciting. I think the fight between Masternak and Dorticos a couple of good, very good competitive fight. I think the two fights Saturday night are good competitive fights and world titles are involved. It’s always good when world titles are involved.
FP: Do you think from a fan’s perspective this cruiserweight tournament being so close to the last cruiserweight tournament poses any issues?
LM: Would I rather have Gassiev and Usyk back in the tournament? The answer is yes. Does it pose any issues? No. It’s as good as we can give the public for a third tournament, we think. And these are the top eight cruiserweights in the world not named Gassiev and Usyk.
FP: Let’s talk about Chicago fighters. You had Shawn Simpson on some cards, you had Jessica McCaskill on some cards, who just won a world championship . . .
LM: I still have Jessica McCaskill, I still promote her.
FP: Were you at the show a couple of weeks ago when she won her championship?
LM: No, I couldn’t make it. I made the deal, but I couldn’t make the show. My son, who works in our office, went over to England when she fought Katie Taylor.
FP: Was Josh Greer ever under your banner or just on a couple of your shows?
LM: No, he was just on our shows. Andrew Zack manages him and made us financial deals to put him on our shows.
FP: Is Jessica the only Chicago fighter you’re currently promoting?
LM: That’s a good question.. . I think so. I have contracts that I’m not enforcing or I’ve released certain fighters like Josh Hernandez . . . but I think she is at the moment. Unless you consider the Polish fighters Chicago fighters.
FP: Well, Chicago does have the second largest Polish community outside of Warsaw, so let’s call them Chicago guys.
LM: Well [Krzysztof] Glowacki but he’s never fought here.
FP: Do you have anything planned for Jessica in the future?
LM: Yeah, something very big, but I’m not at liberty to say. In the next week or so there will be a big announcement.
FP: What are you expecting on Saturday night, other than a giant Polish crowd?
LM: I hope – they’re always late showing up – they haven’t showed up yet! The answer is I expect two very good fights. [Mairis] Briedis who was the only guy to give [Oleksandr] Usyk trouble in the first tournament is the number one seed, and he’s fighting [Noel] Gevor who is a very solid technical fighter who gave [Krzysztof] Wlodarczyk trouble in an elimination bout a couple of years back. A lot people say Briedis had that one night where he was super and not that good and a lot of other people say he’s the second best guy in the world at cruiserweight. So, we’ll see how he does, it’s a real test for him. And, [Maksim] Vlasov has been hot and is well thought of as any cruiserweight the last couple of years and Glowacki, who won a world title when he knocked out [Marco] Huck is trying win a second world title - I think that’s a “pick ‘em” fight. So, I think it’s going to be a great night. And then you have a third fight, you have undefeated German Artur Mann against Alexey Zubov who’s a ranked guy. So you have three good cruiserweight fights, two tournament fights.
FP: How did you get into promoting – going back over 30 years?
LM: Ha! That’s a story to itself. My partner of 30 years is a guy named Louie Decubas, a well known boxing guy. He managed guys like Alfredo Gomez, Roberto Duran. So, the first Cuban defector, Jorge Luis Gonzalez, a big, Cuban giant heavyweight, defected to the United States. And I was a trial lawyer in North Miami Beach, and I was retained to represent him in a contract dispute. I was successful. Louie and I, who was my client, formed a small promotional syndicate called Team Freedom Promotions for all the Cuban defectors, that’s how I got into promotions.
FP: Through the Cuban community?
LM: Through the Cuban community. So I had Joel Casamayor, Gonzalez, Diobelys Hurtado,
FP: Do you speak Spanish?
LM: No, not a word.
Mairis Briedis
FP: This is your second WBSS tournament. What are your thoughts on participating in your second tournament?
MB: I think it is more sensational, for a fighter because I fight for WBC Diamond belt, for me, this very important.
FP: How long have you been in Chicago?
MB: From 1st of November.
FP: How are you acclimating to the time change?
MB: First four days very hard because we train two times per day, and, um, the food is different but thanks G-d, now everything, now everything is like at home.
FP: What have you been eating here in Chicago while training?
MB: Oh, this is a secret. (Laughing.)
FP: Have you done anything different this training camp versus any of the other training camps?
MB: No. But at lunch we always eat Mexican food. (Laughing.)
FP: (Laughing) There are a lot of good Mexican restaurants here in Chicago. Do you have a favorite Mexican dish?
MB: No, we change every time. Now we have two good Mexican foods because when we eat Mexican our stomach don’t pain like before. But now, no pain.
FP: How is your weight for this fight so far?
MB: Weight is perfect. Weight is no problem. Too small (laughing).
FP: You don’t have any weight to lose before the weigh in?
MB: No, maybe 1 kg, 2.2 pounds.
FP: In your training, do you have any cheat foods, any food that you like to sneak, that you’re not supposed to eat?
MB: No. I think if my wife make some different foods, no this is helpful.
FP: What are you doing to relax in your downtime?
MB: Sleep, rest, physical rest. Now I train very hard for two and half months. Now we don’t have to think about rest, I need to think about fight.
FP: Tell us a little bit about your opponent [Noel Gevor] and what you expect Saturday night?
MB: He’s a very tough opponent. I think everyone is a tough opponent because everybody want . . .you know in the cruiserweight division there are 1,000 boxers. And two things: there are the best fighters and lucky fighters. Because there are only eight fighters [in the tournament] and there is a big motivation for everyone.
Maksim Vlasov
FP: Tell us about your opponent, Krzystof Glowacki, on Saturday night.
MV: I saw a lot of fights of him. I know he’s a strong guy. Mentally and strong physical condition. And I think it will be a great fight.
FP: Where did you train for this fight?
MV: At home, in Samara (Russia). We have a good gym, good sparing partners, everything good for preparation.
FP: Glowacki is a southpaw, did you have lefties as sparring partners?
MV: Of course. I have some guys who are southpaws, and a lot of sparring for this fight.
FP: How do you feel being part of the World Boxing Super Series?
MV: I’m excited. It’s a great show, great fights, and I’m happy to be here.
FP: How did you get involved in the tournament?
MV: I was rated number 1 and 2 by the organizations, so of course I should fight the best the fighters in this tournament. That is the idea of the tournament, that the best fighters at the moment fight each other.
FP: When did you arrive in Chicago?
MV: Four days ago.
FP: Have you adjusted to the time?
MV: Yes, of course. And I continued to train, one time per day.
FP: What have been doing to relax since you got here in Chicago?
MV: Just standard practice, just relaxing, sleeping, going to the sauna, some massages, and walking on the river (in downtown Chicago).
FP: How is your weight so far?
MV: I don’t have to make weight. I fight at my natural weight, 200lbs.
FP: What are you expecting from your opponent on Saturday night?
MV: I think Glowacki will try to knock me out. He’s a puncher. Glowacki should understand technically I am better, my boxing IQ is higher, and Glowacki’s only chance is to try and knock me out.
Krzysztof Glowacki
FP: How did you get involved in this tournament?
KG: I’m very happy to be participating. I think it was because I was very high in the rankings. And I’m really happy that I’ll be able to show what I can do in the ring.
FP: Tell us about your opponent [Maksim Vlasov] on Saturday night.
KG: He’s a very good boxer, he’s very inconvenient, and I’m really hoping for a really good fight to watch for our fans.
FP: Is this your first time in Chicago?
KG: That’s right. This is my first time in Chicago. I’ve only boxed in Newark and New York.
FP: Are you aware that this is the second largest Polish community outside of Warsaw?
KG: Of course, I know, I’ve heard a lot about Polish Americans and I’m hoping there will be a lot of fans that come and cheer for me.
FP: I’m guessing that 90% of the people there will be cheering for you.
KG: I’m really happy because it motivates me and I’m really sure this is going to be a really good fight.
FP: How is your weight going into the weigh in on Friday?
KG: As far as weight, I have no problem whatsoever. I can stand on the weight today.
FP: When you’re training, do you have any cheat food, anything you like to sneak that you’re not supposed to?
KG: After the fight, after training, of course I eat things I shouldn’t. But during the training and preparation I stick to my diet.
FP: How did this training camp go?
KG: It was a very a heavy duty camp but we did everything we wanted to so that will show itself in the ring.
FP: When did you arrive in Chicago?
KG: I came one and half weeks ago, exactly.
FP: So you’re used to the time change?
KG: That’s right. As far as time change goes, I sleep normally so everything is the way it’s supposed to be.
FP: What are you doing to relax ahead of the fight?
KG: The standard, pretty much, is we stay at the hotel and we don’t really go out much. I listen to a lot of music, and I play cards. I spend a lot of time with my brother because we communicate together very well.
FP: Is your brother here in town?
KG: He comes tomorrow.
The World Boxing Super Series Cruiserweight Quarter Finals will be available on DAZN and will feature 2 world championship fights plus six additional fights.

Allen belted his second career home run off right-hander Brad Peacock (1-2).
The Indians rallied from a five-run deficit in the ninth inning and pulled even again in the 13th when Yonder Alonso socked a leadoff home run off Collin McHugh after Houston move ahead 9-8 in the top of the frame when Evan Gattis recorded his ninth career multi-homer game with a solo shot off right-hander Dan Otero (1-1).
Trailing 8-3 in the ninth, Cleveland sent 10 batters to the plate while producing seven hits. Jose Ramirez started the comeback by winning a 17-pitch confrontation with Astros closer Ken Giles, finally striking a double to right field. Alonso, Jason Kipnis, Marwin Gonzalez, Francisco Lindor and Michael Brantley had run-scoring hits in the inning.
Yankees 3, Angels 1
Masahiro Tanaka struck out Shohei Ohtani twice and pitched six effective innings as New York beat visiting Los Angeles.
Tanaka (6-2) struck out Ohtani on split-fingered fastballs for the final out of the first and for the second out of the sixth. Ohtani also drew a walk in the fourth off Tanaka, against whom he is 0-for-13 going back to the 2013 season in Japan.
Tanaka allowed a run on three hits and won his fourth consecutive decision. He struck out eight and issued three walks while throwing a season-high 104 pitches. Ohtani finished his first series at Yankee Stadium 0-for-9 with four walks.
Braves 7, Red Sox 1
Tyler Flowers hit a three-run homer off Chris Sale, and Mike Foltynewicz struck out seven over seven innings of one-run ball as visiting Atlanta avoided getting swept in Boston.
Freddie Freeman drove in two runs and Kurt Suzuki (3-for-5) added an RBI for Atlanta, which snapped its three-game losing streak.
Foltynewicz (4-3) gave up only three hits and walked three to outduel Sale (5-2), who coughed up a season-high six runs over 4 1/3 innings. Mitch Moreland knocked an RBI triple for the Red Sox, who had won two straight and eight of their past 10 games.
Tigers 3, White Sox 2
Blaine Hardy tossed a career-high seven innings and won for the first time as a starter as Detroit edged visiting Chicago.
The 31-year-old left-hander was making his third start after 167 relief appearances. Hardy (1-0) limited the White Sox to one run on three hits and a walk while striking out a career-best six batters. Shane Greene gave up a run in the ninth but still notched his 13th save.
Grayson Greiner, Nicholas Castellanos and Dixon Machado drove in the runs for the Tigers, who took two of three in the series to kick off a 12-game homestand.
Royals 5, Rangers 3
Jason Hammel struck out a season-high 10 and turned in one of his better performances as Kansas City took the victory in Arlington, Texas, to split a four-game series.
The Royals roughed up Rangers ace Cole Hamels for five runs through the first three innings to take control.

Hunter Dozier’s two-out single in the first plated Jon Jay and Jorge Soler to give Kansas City an early 2-0 lead. The Royals added to their advantage with home runs off Hamels in the next two innings. Drew Butera drilled a solo shot in the third and Salvador Perez followed with a two-run blast in the next frame.
Mariners 3, Twins 1
Ryon Healy’s two-run double with two outs in the eighth inning broke a tie as Seattle defeated visiting Minnesota.
The Mariners completed a three-game sweep of the series, the first time they’ve accomplished that this season despite a 12-3-3 series record.
Twins right-hander Jose Berrios (5-5) and Mariners right-hander Mike Leake (5-3) dueled into the eighth. Leake allowed one run on four hits in eight innings, with no walks and two strikeouts. Berrios pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out eight.
Dodgers 6, Padres 1
Rookie Walker Buehler gave up one run over seven innings as Los Angeles held on for a victory over visiting San Diego to win three consecutive series for the first time this season.
Max Muncy and Cody Bellinger each hit two-run home runs in the eighth inning as the Dodgers turned a one-run lead into a comfortable victory.
Buehler (3-1) had eight strikeouts, his third eight-K game in seven career starts.
A’s 2, Diamondbacks 1
Frankie Montas combined with three relievers on a three-hitter, and Oakland beat visiting Arizona.
Jonathan Lucroy stunned his former Milwaukee Brewers batterymate with a home run in the third inning, and Matt Chapman drove in Matt Olson with the eventual difference-maker three innings later, allowing the A’s to win the low-scoring interleague series 2-1.
Montas (1-0) recorded his second career win with six innings of three-hit, one-run ball. He walked two and struck out seven. The 25-year-old was making his first big-league appearance this season, and his first start since 2016.
Rockies 8, Reds 2
Carlos Gonzalez had a season-high four hits, including one of Colorado’s four home runs, and the Rockies beat visiting Cincinnati.
Nolan Arenado, David Dahl and Ian Desmond also homered for Colorado. Rockies starter German Marquez (4-5) allowed one run on five hits and struck out six in seven innings to earn his first win at Coors Field this season.
Scooter Gennett, who went 5-for-5 Saturday night, had hits in his first two at-bats, and Joey Votto also had two hits for Cincinnati. Matt Harvey (1-3) pitched into the sixth inning but took his first loss since he came to the Reds in a May 8 trade with the New York Mets.

Rays 8, Orioles 3
Brad Miller homered in the first and added a two-run double during a six-run third inning as Tampa Bay defeated Baltimore at St. Petersburg, Fla.
Vidal Nuno (1-0), who pitched for Baltimore for part of last year, got the win thanks to three scoreless innings of relief after coming on in the first inning. Austin Pruitt finished the game with 5 2/3 innings of shutout relief. He earned his first save of the season.
Carlos Gomez hit a solo homer for the Rays, and Christian Arroyo added two hits, including a two-run single.
Brewers 8, Mets 7
Travis Shaw, Domingo Santana and Jonathan Villar collected run-scoring hits in a span of four pitches in the seventh inning as Milwaukee came back to beat visiting New York.
The Brewers won the final three games of the four-game series and have won nine of their last 11. The Mets have lost five of six.
The Mets, who squandered leads of 3-0 and 5-3 in a 17-6 loss Saturday, led 4-1 in the second and 6-4 in the seventh before the Brewers mounted their two-out rally.
Blue Jays 5, Phillies 3
Devon Travis and Dwight Smith Jr. hit two-run doubles, Curtis Granderson homered, and J.A. Happ pitched into the seventh inning as Toronto won at Philadelphia.
By taking the rubber match of the three-game interleague set, the Blue Jays won their first series since April 30-May 2 against the Minnesota Twins, also on the road. It was a stretch of seven winless series.
Happ (7-3) allowed three runs (two earned), six hits and two walks in 6 2/3 innings. The left-hander struck out eight in earning his third straight win. Ryan Tepera earned his second save of the season and his second of the series.
Cardinals 6, Pirates 4
St. Louis cobbled together three runs in the eighth inning for a win at Pittsburgh. The Cardinals won two of three to take the series against the Pirates, who blew a three-run lead and have lost seven of their past nine.
Pittsburgh led 4-3 entering the eighth. Against Michael Feliz (0-2), Jose Martinez singled, and Tommy Pham and Marcell Ozuna walked to load the bases. Tyler O’Neill struck out, and Feliz gave way to closer Felipe Vazquez.
Martinez scored on pinch hitter Harrison Bader’s single to short left to tie it, and Yairo Munoz drew a four-pitch walk to give the Cardinals a 5-4 lead. Ozuna scored on Tyler Kelly’s fielder’s choice.
Nationals 5, Marlins 2
Bryce Harper added to his National League lead in home runs, and Stephen Strasburg pitched five scoreless innings and hit an RBI single as Washington won at Miami.
The Nationals swept the three-game series and have won 11 straight games against the Marlins, a franchise record for most consecutive wins against an opponent.
Harper, who went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts on Saturday, hit his 16th homer of the season. It was also his third homer in the past six games. He finished with two RBIs. Anthony Rendon added a solo homer and a double for the Nationals.

Hugh Masekela
Hugh Ramapolo Masekela (4 April 1939 – 23 January 2018) was a South African trumpeter, flugelhornist, cornetist, singer and composer who has been described as "the father of South African jazz". Masekela was known for his jazz compositions and for writing well-known anti-apartheid songs such as "Soweto Blues" and "Bring Him Back Home". He also had a number-one US pop hit in 1968 with his version of "Grazing in the Grass".
Early life
Masekela was born in the township of KwaGuqa in Witbank to Thomas Selena Masekela, who was a health inspector and sculptor and his wife, Pauline Bowers Masekela, a social worker. His young sister Barbara Masekela is a poet, educator and ANC activist. As a child, he began singing and playing piano and was largely raised by his grandmother, who ran an illegal bar for miners. At the age of 14, after seeing the 1950 film Young Man with a Horn (in which Kirk Douglas plays a character modelled on American jazz cornetist Bix Beiderbecke), Masekela took up playing the trumpet. His first trumpet was bought for him from a local music store by Archbishop Trevor Huddleston, the anti-apartheid chaplain at St.
When Louis Armstrong heard of this band from his friend Huddleston he sent one of his own trumpets as a gift for Hugh.
Following a Manhattan Brothers tour of South Africa in 1958, Masekela wound up in the orchestra of the musical King Kong, written by Todd Matshikiza. King Kong was South Africa's first blockbuster theatrical success, touring the country for a sold-out year with Miriam Makeba and the Manhattan Brothers' Nathan Mdledle in the lead.
He was helped by Trevor Huddleston and international friends such as Yehudi Menuhin and John Dankworth, who got him admitted into London's Guildhall School of Music in 1960. During that period, Masekela visited the United States, where he was befriended by Harry Belafonte. After securing a scholarship back in London, he moved to the United States to attend the Manhattan School of Music in New York, where he studied classical trumpet from 1960 to 1964. In 1964, Mariam Makeba and Masekela were married, divorcing two years later.
Also in the 1980s, Masekela toured with Paul Simon in support of Simon's album Graceland, which featured other South African artists such as Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Miriam Makeba, Ray Phiri, and other elements of the band Kalahari, which was co-founded by guitarist Banjo Mosele and which backed Masekela in the 1980s. As well as recording with Kalahari, he also collaborated in the musical development for the Broadway play, Sarafina!
In 2003, he was featured in the documentary film Amandla!: A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony. In 2004, he released his autobiography, Still Grazing: The Musical Journey of Hugh Masekela, co-authored with journalist D. Michael Cheers, which detailed Masekela's struggles against apartheid in his homeland, as well as his personal struggles with alcoholism from the late 1970s to the 1990s. He also provided interpretations of songs composed by Jorge Ben, Antônio Carlos Jobim, Caiphus Semenya, Jonas Gwangwa, Dorothy Masuka, and Fela Kuti.
He had subsequent marriages to Chris Calloway (daughter of Cab Calloway), Jabu Mbatha, and Elinam Cofie. He was the father of American television host Sal Masekela. Poet, educator, and activist Barbara Masekela is his younger sister.
Masekela died in Johannesburg on the early morning of 23 January 2018 from prostate cancer, aged 78.
Awards and honours
Masekela was honoured with a Google Doodle on 4 April 2019, which would have been his 80th birthday. The Doodle depicts Masekela, dressed in colourful shirt, playing a flugelhorn in front of a banner.

Masekela was nominated for an Grammy Award three times, including a nomination for Best World Music Album for his 2012 album Jabulani, one for Best Musical Cast Show Album for Sarafina!
