Recommendation: Series doesn’t have a summary and copying on of the fic ones doesn’t really work so: a/b/o ‘verse where some of them are actually werewolves. The worldbuilding in this is great and detailed and gets more complex as you go. Starts of as a Kane/Toews fic but tbh I didn’t read those until I had to rec it. They’re fine if you can divorce yourself entirely from…them, ugh, sorry, not a fan. BUT you totally don’t actually need to read those fics. I would say all of the fics stand on their own or within the pairing series (Seguin/Benn is a three parter and the season two parts don’t work without the first). All the fics rely on miscommunication or lack of communication as part of the plot but they’re a great mixture of angst, sex and a happy ending imo. And again, the world building is interesting and pretty great. My fav fics were the Seguin/Benn, Strome/Debrincat, Crosby/Malkin and Marner/Matthews fics AND there’s a Mcdavid/Tkachuk/Draisaitl fic that’s being updated right now that’s very promising so far! Because this series is still being updated eight years in which tbh is impressive as fuck.

Ahaha this song. I could not resist including it because WHAT a fic premise. Main character shows up at their teammate’s wedding and tells him not to marry this girl because the two of them should be together, and teammate actually goes for it!! It’s perfect (except for a lot of emphasis on the singer being a girl). Honestly it’s even better than the song premise as written, because why is this guy marrying a girl he doesn’t like if she isn’t a beard? Not sure you really want to be with a guy like that.

This song lost a few points for the singer being incredibly scornful of the bride-to-be, which would be a pretty unusual choice for a hockey RPF protagonist. Slash fic sidelines women enough as it is; we don’t usually like our main characters to be mean to them on top of that. Still, though, solid gold premise, well done on the ficciness.

Pairing I’d assign to this song: I have to go with Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle for this, mostly because of the deeply wonderful fic where Jordan realizes years later that Taylor actually confessed his love for him in his best man speech. I’m thinking Taylor and Jordan aren’t together and have never been together; they’ve been a sizzling pool of sexual tension and repression and denial as Jordan hides in the safety of a girlfriend (no shade intended to rl partners here, you seem lovely) and Taylor lives in the tortured hope that Jordan will eventually come around and realize that what he feels for Taylor is so much realer and stronger than what he feels for this girl. But then instead of breaking up, Jordan and this girl go and get engaged, wtf, and it seems like Jordan’s actually going to go through with it even though Taylor knows it’s a terrible mistake that’s just going to lead to him being closeted and miserable. Maybe they even have some kind of fraught conversation at 3 am the night before the wedding that ends with a heartrending kiss that’s everything Taylor always knew it would be, and then Taylor knows that Jordan can’t marry her. But it’s too late–Jordan’s afraid to rock the boat, this is what everyone’s expecting of him, it’s easier to just go through with it, and Taylor feels sick about it but still manages to keep his mouth shut and show up for the wedding of his best friend. Until the minister says those words–you know the ones–and suddenly Taylor knows he can’t let Jordan make a choice he would regret for the rest of his life.

Recommendation: Do you want to get depressed about a bunch of players and particularly Taylor Hall? This is about the unbearable optimism of youth in a league where there is one (1) winner each year in a sport where so much is down to luck. And about learning that, and learning what happens when the shine starts to wear off. Man, I just want them to get to be bright eyed rookies forever. Nico is absolutely fucking adorable in this. And Taylor just. Tries really hard and somehow still ends up floundering. The fic has a nice resolution and ends well. But like. In the context of it, it’s even more heartbreaking that Hall is off to play mentor to ANOTHER number one draft pick.

This is a very quiet little vignette featuring two former Bruins who were not stars and did not end up experiencing great success in their time here. It exists entirely in the gray of adult complications and disappointments, and refuses any easy catharsis, and is beautiful for those reasons. For those of us who cared about the Bruins in the (relatively) dismal era between 2015-17 it may come across as a tiny time capsule; for everyone else, I hope the delicate way it honors the hopes and dreams of those who don’t become hometown heroes, who don’t get the happily everafter ending, stays with you.

Jimmy is distracted though, melancholy because Frank has so much promise and Jimmy took so long to get to where he is.
