"The Wrysons" (The Stories of John Cheever)
1950s Angst
This one might as well be called Fear: 1950s Style, becuase if there is anything that quite encapsulates the anxieties of the 1950s it would be nuclear war and men doing "women's work".
The Wrysons are introduced as assholes, the kind of assholes that make everyone around them pay for their exactitude. They are unfriendly. They don't like to read or watch movies or anything. There one passion involves bullying the entire community into maintaining their lawns and not building a library (there's no discussion of a library in this story but the previous story about Marcie Flint was big on everyone trying to block the library to keep the suburbs dull and underdeveloped).
Only then Cheever puts you in their heads. Irene dreams of nuclear war and in almost all of her dreams, she's killing herself and her daughter to avoid the nuclear fallout. You know this was the abiding fear of most of the 20th century. There might have been a year after WWII when big bombs that can destroy entire cities were cool, but then everyone got very scared. I believe that they got scared even before the Rosenbergs gave the USSR enough nuclear secrets to build nuclear bombs, but I don't know. I just know that I was alive in the 1980s and once America and Russia seemed to be backing away from the whole "hey let's have a war and everyone's invited" it was very hard to come up with new things to scare people.
Yes, the Satan Panic was there to fill the vacuum left by the anxiety around a nuclear bomb landing on your front yard. That's my theory and I'm sticking with it. At very least, it managed to scare the hell out of everyone until the big bad gangsta rappers came along to say Fuck da Police.
Does Ice Cube owe his career to Glasnost? Maybe i should upgrade my ADHD meds to Adderall.
So Mrs. Wryson is afraid of nuclear war, but Donald? Donald is a sad little boy in a man's body who can only deal with his depression by baking a cake in the same way that he baked a cake with his mother after his father left. The cake baking is his security.
Given the main ways that 1950s men dealt with their depression, cake baking seems downright healthy. Only Donald is way too hidden away from his emotions to even admit to it.
And how does John Cheever end this? He dangles a tragic ending. It appears like he's presented his characters in two ways - how the community sees them and how they see themselves. So what happens?
In the tragic ending, Donald dies in a car accident on his way from a community meeting and Irene breaks a hip which eventually leads to her death. The daughter is taken in by relatives.
But instead let's have a downer ending that isn't melodramatic. Irene wakes up to a burning smell, thinks its the war and goes into the kitchen to see Donald sleeping as he burns the cake. She doesn't get him. She doesn't understand why he's baking the cake and he's not about to tell her. Just like she's not about to tell him about her dreams.
They are a married couple but they have their secrets. I guess all couples have things they keep from each other, but this one is kind of sad. Still they will bully the rest of the community together so Donald is fine without sharing his weakness with Irene and Irene isn't about to tell Donald about her dread of nuclear war (a common dread but probably not in that extreme).
Ultimately this is Cheever at his most economical. Here are the characters as we see them. Here they see themselves. Let's give it a synthesis ending, but Cheever never goes exactly where you think.

Houses For Sale In San Diego How To Find Cheap Houses In 2020 Call Here: +14432418975
Homes keep selling during pandemic – Southwest Journal
During her tenure, Ms. McIntosh has overseen a spate of acquisitions, making her a little like Eric Carle’s Very Hungry Caterpillar: The company bought F+W Books, a publisher of illustrated nonfiction, and a 45 percent stake in the independent publisher Sourcebooks. (It also bought the intellectual property rights to “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.”) Penguin Random House, which was valued at $3.67 billion in 2019, could get even bigger. Anticipating another wave of media consolidation, Bertelsmann recently announced its interest in buying Simon & Schuster, which Viacom put up for sale this spring for $1.2 billion. Even if a rival spends more to get Simon & Schuster, it will be hard for anyone to catch up with Penguin Random House. “There is no No. 2. There’s only No. 1,” Mr. McIlroy said. Advertisement Because of its enormous publishing program, with more than 300 imprints globally and a backlist going back nearly a century, the publisher leads the literary world on seemingly every axis, from the highest-brow fiction to pulpy commercial authors. It publishes Nobel Prize winners like Kazuo Ishiguro and Alice Munro; Pulitzer Prize winners like Colson Whitehead, Anne Tyler and Jon Meacham; and prose deities who shaped 20th-century American literature, including Cormac McCarthy, John Cheever, Eudora Welty, Saul Bellow, William Faulkner, John Updike and Joan Didion. It publishes blockbuster authors like Dan Brown, E L James, John Grisham and Danielle Steel. It publishes mega-best-selling children’s and young adult authors like Dr. Seuss and John Green. It publishes the Obamas, whose memoirs Penguin Random House acquired with a record-breaking $65 million advance. When the coronavirus hit, Ms. McIntosh left her Manhattan home, a recently acquired apartment in the Dakota, for a second property in Orient, at the extremity of the North Fork of Long Island. She has ridden out the pandemic there with her husband, the thriller writer Chris Pavone; their teenage twin boys; and a Labradoodle named Wally. Mr. Pavone is published by Crown, a Penguin Random House imprint. The couple say they observe a strict separation of “church and state” when it comes to his career: Her only involvement is reading early drafts and passing along encouragement. Most days, he cooks dinner for their family, and enjoys their household division of labor — their sons see a father who’s around for homework help and a mother who’s a C.E.O. To unwind, he told me, Ms. McIntosh “bakes maniacally” on the weekends. As Covid-19 began to spread, she bought 100 pounds of flour, which she steadily converted into bread, cookies, pies and cakes, though she took a hiatus after breaking her hand in a paddle-boarding accident this summer. In some ways, Ms. McIntosh’s ascent has been typical — a steady climb up the corporate ladder. But she also stands out as someone who at every turn has rejected conventional thinking, and who has had an uncanny degree of foresight about technological change. The daughter of an arts administrator and a banker, she grew up in St. Paul, Minn., and Pittsburgh, and studied fine arts at Harvard, hoping at first to become a curator. She took the Radcliffe Publishing Course instead, leading to a toehold in the industry as a temporary assistant to an editor at HarperCollins, then to a permanent position at Norton. By 1994, Ms. McIntosh saw that the internet would irreversibly transform publishing, and that year she got a job in the new-media department at Bantam Doubleday Dell, a division of Bertelsmann. Her work involved creating proposals to convert texts to CD-ROM and developing and managing the company’s first website. Eventually, she was put in charge of online sales — a small fraction of the business, but one she suspected would grow. Her first task was to set up an account for Amazon, when no one really knew what it was, a bookstore or a distributor.

Eyes Wide Open - Useful Tips To Know When Buying Real Estate
With the shape of the housing market today, mortgage loans are harder to get and home values are continuing to fall. There`s a lot of uncertainty out there and buyers just don`t know how to get a great deal in the face of so much turmoil. Homebuyers, read these tips for some assistance in real estate.
When purchasing real estate, be sure to get the mortgage that is right for you. If you are intending on staying in the house for a long while, then a fixed rate mortgage is the way to go. On the other hand, someone who intends to move after a few years should take advantage of a low rate adjustable mortgage. This way you will save money.
When you are going to buy a home sometimes you may get into bidding wars with other people that want the same home as you. If people have already fallen in love with the home they may push up their offer price when they find out others want the same home. One of the things that you can do is to learn the prices of the other homes in the area. That way you have a idea of what things are going for and if it`s under priced you can figure out if you want to bid or look elsewhere.
To find a new home, you should look on the internet for classified ads. You can also go to a local real estate agency and look at their selection of homes for sale. The more ads you look at, the more likely you are to find something you want.
Before you begin looking for a home to buy, know what you can afford. There are many affordability calculators online that take various factors into account, but they are still only guidelines. You may prefer to spend a little less on a house payment to make sure one spouse can stay home with kids, or you might want to go a little higher to avoid having to move again in a few years.
All of the tips in this article can help you when buying real estate, but only if you apply them properly. You have to make sure that you remember all of the information and apply it when necessary. So be sure to come back and reread this article until you think these tips are embedded in your brain.

The 2019 NFL DRAFT from Nashville,Tennessee is over and the NFL deemed it a huge success estimating there were more than 500,000 or half a million people in Nashville for the draft. Besides that i think that our team the Tennessee Titans did really well overall as well getting players in several areas that were really needed.
In the first round instead of trading back or up as GM Jon Robinson has been known to do in the past he decided to stay put at the Titans pick which this year is #19 and picked Jeffery Simmons a 6ft4in 300 pound defensive tackle from Mississippi St. who racked up 163 tackles, seven sacks, four forced fumbles and six passes defensed in three seasons there.
Simmons would’ve been a potential top 5 pick before suffering a torn ACL doing a routine drill during a workout in February. Due to the injury he dropped but if everything goes right he will be ready to play again before the season is over if the Titans decide to do so.
In round two they picked WR A.J. Brown out of Ole Miss a player many analysts had not only as the best WR in the draft but in the first round as well. Brown in three seasons there caught 189 passes for 2,984 yards and 19 touchdowns. In 2018 he led the nation in missed tackles forced and was second in explosive plays compared with all other receivers.
In round three they drafted OT Nate Davis a 6ft3in 315 pound offensive lineman from the University of Charlotte who will move to guard in the pros. He has has the size, athleticism and experience to start at right guard early.
In round four they picked S Amani Hooker out of Iowa. His last season there he had 65 tackles, 3.5 for loss, four interceptions, seven pass breakups and a safety over 13 starts. No defensive back since 2016 has a higher overall grade from the slot.
In round five they chose OLB D'Andre Walker out of Georgia. Walker was a force on defense in his final two seasons with the Bulldogs, totaling 85 tackles, 24.5 for loss, 13 sacks, five forced fumbles and four interceptions. He finished fifth among the SEC class of edge defenders by averaging a pressure once every 7.6 pass-rushes last season.
In round six their last pick they chose ILB David Long out of West Virginia University. At 5-foot-11, 227 pounds, Long is undersized but makes up for it with just how productive he is. He posted an 83.5 pass-rush grade last year, which was 10th-best among all LBs with at least 50 pass-rush snaps.
With the Mountaineers, Long racked up 246 tackles, 39.5 for loss, 12.5 sacks, ten pass breakups and two forced fumbles.
26 percent of his solo tackles were for losses over the past two seasons.
The Titans also brought in some undrafted free agents or UDFA.
Kansas State RB Alex Barnes, UNC WR Anthony Ratliff-Williams, Boston College CB Hamp Cheevers are some of the undrafted players brought in.
One player was projected to be drafted but wasnt Sam Houston State defensive end Derick Roberson in three seasons he recorded 123 tackles, 23 sacks, eight passes defensed and seven forced fumbles. His 15 sacks in 2018 led all of FCS last season.
Not a bad haul at all overall for the 2019 Tennessee Titans.

Well, I read some truly cracking books this year. Check out the list below! Full disclosure: I didn’t finish the BS Johnson biography (it’s very long!), the book of Will Oldham’s lyrics (I gave it to a friend which I am totally fine about!), the John Cheever short stories (there are about 500 in that edition!), the Beastie Boys book (I only just got it!) and Finnegans Wake (it’s not written in English!). But a good haul nevertheless. 2018 was the year in which I discovered the Backlisted podcast which I highly recommend. It’s inspiring, accessible, funny, and has introduced me to numerous life-changing books that I would never have heard about otherwise.
Classic Scrapes – James Acaster Reservoir 13 – Jon McGregor Collected Stories – John Cheever The Dark Portal – Robin Jarvis The Clocks in This House All Tell Different Times – Xan Brooks Stag’s Leap – Sharon Olds All the Devils are Here – David Seabrook A Month in the Country – J. IndyCar actually listened to me and made some improvements..
Last summer I wrote a blog post about improvements that I thought IndyCar should make because I am a huge IndyCar fan and I happen to have a lot of opinions.
Since then, IndyCar has made some improvements as we’ve started in on the 2017 IndyCar season.
Some of them are improvements that I previously suggested in my blog post last summer.
You can read it here: https://secrets-of-a-blonde.tumblr.com/post/148453231400/improvements-indycar-should-consider-making
I think I should get some credit for these changes, I’m pretty sure the series read my blog post and that was what led them to make the changes (that was supposed to be read as sarcastic if you didn’t catch that).
So what I’ve decided to do is revisit my previous suggestions that I made for improvements for the IndyCar season and see where we are making progress.
All right, lets do this.
(My previous blog suggestions are in bold)
Someone get JR Hildebrand in a car full time.
Ed Carpenter was finally the person who decided to finally sign JR to a full time IndyCar ride. I was so excited to hear this news.
I seriously can’t wait to see what JR is going to do with his ride with ECR.
But on another note, JR, please get a haircut. Your current hair is making it hard to support you.
Lets get rid of those rear wing pods.
Praise Jesus Halleluiah, there’s a new car being revealed for the 2018 season WTHOUT rear wing pods.
And lucky for you, they just cam out what new images of the new cars TODAY
Looking good if I do say so myself.
I’m so excited to see what the new car is going to look like and I’m even more excited for those rear wing pods to be removed so they will no longer hinder races.
I was angered many times by this- if you want to hear my full opinion read my previous blog.
Use young drivers as a marketing tool.
I think this is the point where I am the most proud of the series for using my suggestion.
Incase you’ve missed it; this season, IndyCar has launched a NEXT series, featuring the young drivers in the series, as they are the future of the series.
youtube
I think the campaign will really help to draw in new and young fans.
IndyCar is finally trying to draw in the young fan base so yay!
Maybe I’ll actually find someone at college who is also an IndyCar fan! YAY
IndyCar needs to work on brining in more fans.
See previous comments.
But to add one thing, they have an Indy 500 YouTube add that I’ve seen on occasion so go IndyCar series! Way to be proactive!
And they ran a commercial during the Super Bowl!
youtube
I’m so proud!
Lets get some more females driving in the series full time.
Sadly, no improvements in this area yet. But I did write a whole blog on this once upon a time and you can read it here: https://secrets-of-a-blonde.tumblr.com/post/147407703265/why-indycar-needs-another-danica-patrick
Get rid of ABC race broadcasts.
They haven’t made this improvement yet which I hate. But there have been whispers in the paddock that ABC may be seeing the end of their days.
Here’s to hoping that we see more of Robin Miller and Jon Beekhuis and less of Scott Goodyear and Eddie Cheever.
I’d say that IndyCar made some pretty good strides towards improvement in its off-season. I’m impressed.
AND just to throw it out there- the best improvement that has been made- Josef Newgarden is now a part of Team Penske and Montoya got the boot and is only racing in two races this season.
Whoop whoop!
Sorry IndyCar series, but Team Penske wins the overall title of most/best improvement of the off-season.

Reliable Real Estate Tips For Buying Like A Pro
Taking a step into the mysterious land of buying real estate for the very first time might feel somewhat daunting. By keeping the helpful tips listed below in mind, you will soon find yourself buying the property of your dreams, all while using some helpful information that can help you avoid scams.
Knowing what you can afford in monthly payments is very important when considering a real estate purchase. If you have a maximum monthly payment amount that you feel comfortable with, then you will eliminate the possibility of making yourself "house poor", meaning that all of your income goes towards your housing payment, leaving you little extra money for fun or entertainment.
When you are in the market to buy a home, do not go looking at the houses that are on the top of your price range first. It is better to look at one in the lower end of your price range. The reason for this is that if you see the more expensive one first, you will always compare the other houses to it.
Research the natural disasters that have occurred in the area of the home you are considering. Find out if the property lies near a fault or a flood zone, if wildfires are prevalent in the area or if the area is known for tornado activity. Not only do these factors influence the value of the home, this can make insuring the property, once you own it, much more expensive.
An important aspect to consider when buying a house is the number of bedrooms. Each neighborhood was built in a family model in sight so it is easier and usually cheaper to find a 3-4 bedroom house in an area where most of the houses have 3-4 bedrooms. If the neighborhood usually has smaller houses, you will pay much more for the extra bedroom.
With these tips, you can be much more prepared to take the first few steps towards home ownership. Be sure to carefully research all of your various options so that you don`t sign something that you will regret later. Purchasing a home can be one of the most rewarding and exciting endeavors you will ever make.
