Password Auditing tools

I will continue talking about cyber tools from last week by covering some password auditing tools this week. I have used these tools before, but not extensively, and I still have much to learn and experience with different practical settings.

The first tool I will cover is John the Ripper. John the Ripper is an open-source password security auditing and password recovery tool. It was originally designed for UNIX systems but has been updated to encompass many different platforms and hash types. It has a few different modes but the most 2 notable is wordlist mode which allows it to test passwords against a word list, iterating through the list. The other remarkable feature is an incremental mode which brute forces with all possible combinations of a set parameter. You can do both of these modes with the addition of different hash and salt combinations.

The other tool I would like to mention is Hashcat. Hashcat claims it is the world's fastest password recovery tool. It leverages the power of modern GPUs to accurate the password-cracking tasks. Just like John the Ripper, Hashcat also has many different types of modes/attacks. Such as discretionary, mask, hybrid, and rule-based attacks.

Thoughts on being "The Right One"

I am re-watching Babylon 5 for the umpteenth time and last evening I watched "Comes the Inquisitor" which is absolutely one of my favorite episodes. It has everything, lots of G'Kar, who is one of my favs, and, of course, plenty of Delenn and Sheridan slow-burn romance building, and a cameo by Jack the Ripper.

Every time I watch it I always find myself wondering what I might do if put through Delenn's inquisition by Sebastian. I have, like I think most if not all people have at one point or another, felt like I *should* do something because either I was the only person who could do the thing or I was the only person *willing* to do the thing, so the idea that this might not be "enough" to be the Right One to do the thing is a troubling kind of self-doubt that I am also very familiar with.

Watching the episode again last night I realized there are no correct answers because it's not really a test meant to prove or disprove that you are "The Right One" but to give an opportunity to demonstrate that you are "The Right One." Not to prove it to the Vorlons, who I suspect knew that Delenn and Sheridan were "The One" all along, but so that Delenn and Sheridan would know. That's why Sebastian stays long enough to tell them that.

Tragically, in the ever-darkening timeline we occupy, there are no arbiters of Rightness to tell you if you are The Right One in the Right Place at the Right Time for the Right Reasons. You just have to guess. You just have to know that in yourself. You have to choose your principles, choose your cause, and commit without knowing if you are fated for success for failure.

Which is why I think it's still important to watch this episode every once in a while. The answers don't matter. The perseverance does. The willingness to sacrifice yourself for your cause is what matters, the commitment to not just the fight but to the principle, matters. Doing it for the Right Reason, matters.

And that's the lesson of revealing Sebastian was Jack the Ripper. He believed it was his purpose to destroy corruption, but he didn't commit to a principle that was opposed to corruption. He identified & obsessed over a single symptom of corruption and chose to fight that. If you do not understand the Reasons to Fight, then you will almost always end up fighting the wrong fight and doing objective harm not just to other human beings, but to your own cause.

Weaponizing his self-loathing that way is, imo, also one of the many early breadcrumbs dropped by JMS that the Vorlons may be "beings of light" in the literal sense, but they are not ethically perfect beings. What they subjected Sebastian to was centuries of torture, specifically and vindictively designed to torment Sebastian specifically. Yes, he was a murderer, yes, he needed to be stopped, but this was not a healthy redirection, this was weaponizing his distorted view of himself & the world against him & trapping him in a cycle where he could never escape it: forced to confront his own failings over and over again and never given an opportunity to grow or overcome those shortcomings.

You can't convince me that wasn't a conscious choice on the part of a race so advanced that they are the last thing that actually *scares* the Shadows. They could have healed him and redirected him and he could have served a higher purpose and paid penance and died content but the death he hopes for is only a release from the suffering of his post-Vorlon existence.

This show is so good and it gives me the strength to find hope even in these ever-darkening days. You do not have to set yourself on fire or aggregate power & wealth to change the world. You just have to be willing to stand up for one person's right to exist. That is enough.
