☆SILVERCHAIR/ISRAEL’S SON CONTROVERSY☆

*i just thought this would be kinda cool to add into tcc since i dont see any posts on it…also my love for silverchair and something new.*

BACKGROUND☆

Silverchair is a Australian rock band from Newcastle, New South Wales, consisting of Daniel Johns (guitarist and vocalist), Ben Gillies (drummer), and Chris Joannou (bassist). The band started out in 1992, in 1995, Silverchair released their first ablum ‘Frogstomp’ on March 27th, 1995 with their most popular song being ‘Tomorrow’.

ISRAEL’S SON☆

How this song came to be is when Daniel Johns had a interview with Request Magazine on November 1st, 1995, saying:

“ ‘ That [song] was about an execution I saw on tele,’ he says in the same way you’d say ‘that was an ad I saw on tele.’ ‘I got this video of an execution, and I just saw it, and I was watching it one night, and I had a dream about it, and I woke up and thought -Oh, yeah that’s pretty cool-, 

and I wrote a song about it.’ “

THE MURDERS☆

On August 11th, 1995 Nicholaus McDonald and his boyfriend Brian Bassett would start their week-old plan to steal money and a car from Bassett’s parents (Michael and Wendy Bassett) and to kill Bassett’s parents if they where home, and drive off to California. They went to Bassett’s parents’ home in McClearly (in Washington)—Bassett entered in first and fatally shot his father and mother. 

McDonald entered in next and noticed that Bassett’s father was still breathing and shot him in the head. Bassett’s five-year old brother Austin was kneeling down next to his parents bodies, Bassett told him to wash off the blood and Austin was drowned in the bathtub.

McDonald had made several statements towards police, before and after his arrest, saying that he killed Austin.

After the murder and deposing the bodies, they loaded a van, left Bassett’s residence, stopped at McDonald’s home to retrieve some belongings, and drove towards California. (This was in McDonald’s testimony).

TRIAL☆

In the February 1996 trial, following their arrests both Bassett’s (Bassett was 16)  and McDonald’s (McDonald was 18)  lawyers claimed that the lyrics to Silverchair’s ‘Israel’s Son’ had provoked their cilents to commit the crime.

McDonald’s lawyer, Tom Copland, alleged that his cilent had been listening to Silverchair’s ‘Frogstomp’ album before the murders took place, and that the lyrics to ‘Israel’s Son’ “Hate is what I feel for you/I want you to know that I want you dead” were ‘almost script. They’re relevant to everything that happened.’

It was also alleged that, immediately after the murder, Bassett played ‘Israel’s Son’ and danced around kicking his parents bodies.

At press time,  the judge, Mark McCauley had ruled that the song cannot be included in the opening statements at the trial.  (At the time) He said that he will decide later whether to allow ‘Israel’s Son’ to be played during the trial.

STATEMENT(S)

On friday, a release was issued by Murmur (an Australian Sony music record label). It states: Australian alternative rock band Silverchair has responded to allegations by an American lawyer which attempt to link one of the group’s songs to multiple murder in the USA. The band’s manager, John Watson, made the following statement on the behalf of Silverchair:

‘Silverchair do not, have not, and never would condone violence of any sort. The band is appalled by this horrific crime and they hope that justice will prevail in prosecuting whoever is responsible for it. The band extends its sincere sympathies to the families and friends of the victims in this case. Silverchair absolutely rejects any allegation that their song is in any way responsible for the actions of alleged murders. It is a matter of public record that the song in question, Israel’s Son, was inspired by television documentary about wartime atrocities. Israel’s Son was never intended to provoke violence and cannot be interpreted by an reasonable person as doing so. In fact, the song seeks to criticise violence and war by portraying them all in their horror.”

LATER☆

In a later interview with Samantha Clode with Juice Magazine in April 1st, of 1999 Daniel Johns was asked how did he feel when he heard about the teenagers that murdered their parents while playing his record in the US and could he disassociate from it, he responded with:

‘Yeah, at the time. I remember when I was told when it happened. I was in a bad period in my life. Anyway, I was not feeling good. I was very devastated, actually. I got very weak at the knees, because at the time I wasn’t thinking that straight. I thought if people are taking my lyrics that literally I’m going to stop. I don’t want people to act upon what I write.’

THE GRAY CHILDREN - KEY RELATIONSHIPS / LIFE MOMENTS

warnings: mentions of nepotism, murder, age-gaps, abortion, aids crisis, predatory power dynamics, intrusive press, drug use, smoking, death, suicide, post-partum depression, overdose. minors, dni.

this isn't an exhaustive list, just relationships that would make some significant impact on the gray kids. you'll notice george and rosie don't have as much as their younger siblings, but that's simply because they moved around so often that long-term relationships weren't as easy to come by so it's not to say they didn't have them.

fair warning, violet's is pretty heavy-on - a real break the cutie - and whilst i don't condone what happened in the slightest, i want to make that crystal clear it was something that happened to young girls in that industry and i wanted to explore it.

GEORGE GRAY

george met isla mcnamara whilst recovering from an arm injury back in florence during wwii and they grew close over this time there being a pair of few scots with george growing up in glasgow and isla, although born in aberdeen, was raised in edinburgh. the couple stayed in contact throughout the war and reunited on victory in europe, eloping a few weeks later. their daughter olivia was born in nineteen-fourty-seven and their son in nineteen-fifty. they also joined the gray's in california where george completed his english degree at berkely, going on the pen successful novel, the gray area.

the gray area recounts george and his family's experience growing up around the infamous birmingham gang through their personal anecdotes as children. the book is primarily told from george's perspective, but when not it's typically his mother's. the novel was purposely published post michael's death due to his involvement in the jimmy mccavern murder however george began writing in nineteen-fifty. the book caused a slight rift between the gray boys with jack taking up his then wife's surname as to not draw attention to himself once it hit shelves.

ROSALIN "ROSIE" GRAY

michael managed to get rosalin a small job on his friend, elia kazan's latest film - gentleman's agreement as dorothy mcguire's personal assistant. since her brief modelling work had dried up, she just wanted something to get her out the house. however, mcguire had fallen ill during the production and instead of halting, kazan had rosalin run her lines opposite gregory peck. the pair grew close over the process and had begun dating by the premier. they married in nineteen-forty-nine and had their first set of children in nineteen-fifty - twins, edward and dean with another son and finally a daughter by nineteen-fifty-seven.

JOHN "JACK" GRAY

jack met aspiring socialite and heiress louise valentine after moving to new york city once completing his architecture degree at ucla. she introduced him to the life he'd actively ran from in his youth. however this was now on his own terms, now surrounded by his peers the recluse younger gray son became an infamous party boy. unbeknownst to the tabloids, jack was running from a secret and drowning out its pestering screams for release in booze and new-market drugs. louise and jack's marriage was an oddly sinister mirror of his own mother's plight. they went on to have a daughter together before separating in nineteen-seventy-six after his secret's exposure within a high-profile affair.

after the loss of his partner, journalist gene vanderbilt to aids and the death of his mother less than a year prior and ten years since the death of his baby sister. jack moved back to britain once hitting breaking point. escaping prying eyes of the us press, he eventually meets taxi driver stephen nimmo. the pair settle down in manchester living a rather quiet life and marrying in twenty-fourteen with his daughter and sibling's children in attendance.

VIOLET GRAY

it's nineteen-fifty, the year of the blossoming teenager - the golden age of hollywood and violet gray's grown up around every form of glitter imaginable. from the squeaky-clean to the seedy underbelly glows and now dawning her sister's 'bell of the ball' role at family gatherings. freshly seventeen, she's ready for her cake too. especially after an emboldening encounter with the glowing blonde bombshell who'd borrowed the mirror in her dresser and left a red lippy behind during rosie's birthday party.

enter her eldest brother's friend-of-a-friend from broadway with chocolate brown eyes she dreamed of melting in. nobody thought much of it. it was all rather innocent, little vi had a crush on the man that soon the whole world would too. staring up at the stage wishing hunter would need an impromptu understudy.

he called her flower. even between the subtle scoffs and snarky remarks towards her sister, the boisterous sitting-room gatherings with her brothers and consummate handshakes with her father and uncle eila. he didn't forget to call her flower after pinching a lucky strike and her cheek too because marlon brando knew.

violet, until the day she died could never forget the chalk-white complexion and sharp inhale from her mother in the spring of 'fifty-two after the tearful admission but nora was finally allowed to take the step she planned to at violet's age. they saw carrie in theatre later that day starring a family friend from england.

in an attempt to get the girl back on the "straight-and-narrow", violet was introduced to fellow aspiring actor, james dean in late september of nineteen-fifty-two and was instantly head-over-heels. the streetcar star long forgotten much to her mother and sister's delight as the boys - including michael had been none-the-wiser. forget flower, she was now a doll.

she'd never really recovered, it was an open secret. amongst her family and the court of public opinion. she'd lost too damn much, so fucking much. she couldn't even meet the eyes of her baby-boy, nor her doting husband charlie hope. one abortion, two miscarriages, the man of her dreams and the sister-like blonde bombshell, her body plastered all over that fucking bunny magazine. the days of being disney's darling girl where over. hollywood's glitter had begun to rot and decay but just like every other morning since that fateful day in nineteen-fifty-five, there was still the medicine cabinet.

it was nineteen-sixty-seven and violet would've been thirty-three that winter.

her final starring role was set to release two years later, nineteen-sixty-nine's, bonnie & clyde which would also mark the end of michael and nora's producing / casting film portfolio.

i'd had this sitting around a while and i didn't really know if i wanted to post it, mainly with the girls' sections - especially violet's but i've been writing a bit and i know i've been pretty radio silent for the past wee while so, whilst it's not a fic i hope you enjoyed a little more lore on the younger gray kids.

I have to admit I'm not seeing the real wrong here unless he's deliberately claiming this is the real Scarlett Johansson because there's no ignoring the fact that many actresses and artists literally are trying to meet the goal effect within a pre-existing trend box usually held by another celebrity

This was practically an entry on TV tropes where somehow actresses and celebrities will all start to morph into the same sort of face shape haircut and what have you

This was particularly concerning due to the amount of plastic surgery and or other interventions that were done in order to fit this image

That we now have the technology to extent a voice work simply means the same thing and this ignores that many people have been doing John Luke Picard or a would be Other celebrity imitation and often being hired exactly for that such as Michael Rosenbaum on the Justice League animated cartoon

It's just now we can do models with technology and we've been using soothing female voice work for quite some time when doing public facing work

I mean I get how this can feel personally violating and uncomfortable and definitely a reason to get out there to the public this isn't you, you don't condone this

But that is public relations

I'm sorry but I'm very sensitive to the idea of women being able to claim personal violation on acts that do not infect involve them just because they are creative acts that are done out of ardor attraction

This moves from essentially protecting their own person and dignity to controlling someone else's actions

We are not talking about nude photos that they have of themselves that are being leaked to the public

We're not even talking about bad rumors that are being said about them without actual confirmation or to misinform the public of their reputation especially when they say their careers very much depend on their image

This is quite literally an imitation by technology a form of artwork

And I do not want that under regulation by way of for the protection of women a lot of b******* has been justified under that principle to abridge people's rights

What could Al, Red, Rocky, Chris, Patrick, Rhonda, Chief, Owen, Justin, Ellis, and Sergei share besides being characters of riveting, moving, and, many times, underrated movies and books? For me, they represent unconditional and loving friendship, one that conveys love, respect, affection and admiration for a friend, regardless.

A friendship which encompasses appreciation of a friend for what he is, one which never judges or mocks, who longs for the friend’s company and is nearby all the time in journeys and paths, even when distance looms as an insurmountable obstacle; friends who never take advantage of secrets, dreams and fears in whom they were confided as a weapon of envy and resentment.

Friends to banter, laugh with and seize the day, but never to belittle or laugh at. Who do not condone those who aim at destroying and dehumanizing us by claiming we are to blame for the outcome. Who calls us in times of despair or hopelessness rather than give self-righteous and patronizing lectures. Who do not bellow before strangers what our problems are, as an attempt to eclipse their own upheavals and misery.

Who invites us to go camping, bike riding, to a concert or whatever even if we are not into that stuff, just to cherish and enjoy the company of a friend. Who remembers us in times of happiness and sadness, not only when seeking company for a beer or to vent off about miserable lives or spouses. Who senses in our words and conversations a cry for help or affection. A good friendship feels like we have been always together even if decades apart. And especially, especially, who always fights for us, who eagerly defends us, in places we are not around.   

It behooves everyone to foster true, affectionate, decent and honest friendship.

As when Al fights relentlessly to free Birdy from his inner cage, for he knows his poetry and beauty must not be entrapped and releasing him also purges his own demons. There have been majestic examples of friendship among historic figures too. One that was swift but intense was the one between Van Gogh and Gauguin. Despite feuds, setbacks and squabbles, they were able to admire and respect one another, having corresponded to each other until Van Gogh’s sullen and lonely passing. Gauguin could not fully understand Van Gogh’s paintings, but that is not his fault. Van Gogh’s beauty was so above anyone that only though time could mankind realize the powerful beauty of his art.

However, Gauguin respected Van Gogh’s efforts and endeavors and especially his belief and drive of sharing the beauty of arts. When one enters the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, he can see Gauguin’s painting The Painter of Sunflowers, portraying his friend bringing joy and beauty to make it easier to cope with the intense chaos the world can be.
