Homosexuality in colonial New England
I decided to read up about homosexuality and other deviant sexual behavior in the Puritan colonies and let me tell you, I am not disappointed. (Even though sodomy, then defined as homosexual behavior, or, "a vile Affection men given up thereto leave the Naturall use of women & burn in their lust one Towards Another," generally carried the penalty of death, the actual sentence upon conviction was never, in all but one case, actually death.) Here are some of my favorite bits (source):
The first recorded incident of homosexuality in New England occurred in 1629, when the ship Talbot arrived in Massachusetts. During the voyage, "5 beastly Sodomiticall boyes . . . confessed their wickedness not to be named." Unwilling to deal with anything so distasteful, Massachusetts authorities sent the boys back to England, arguing that since the crime occurred in the high seas, the Bay Colony had no jurisdiction.
Re Thomas Morton of Merrymount and his men: "They set up a maypole, drinking and dancing about it many days together, inviting the Indian women for their consorts, dancing and frisking together like so many fairies, or furies, rather; and worse practices."
In 1636, Plymouth held the first trial for homosexuality in New England. John Alexander and Thomas Rivers were "found guilty of lude behavior and uncleane carriage one [with] another, by often spendinge their seede one upon another." The evidence was conclusive, since the court had a witness and confessions from the accused. Futhermore, Alexander was "notoriously guilty that way," and had sought "to allure others thereunto."
Another Plymouth sodomy case, in 1642: The court found Edward Mitchell guilty of "lude and sodomiticall practices"with Edward Preston. Michell was also playing around with Lydia Hatch, and Preston attempted sodomy with one John Keene, but was turned down. To complicate matters ever further, Lydia was caught in bed with her brother Jonathan.
In 1649, Mary Hammond and Sara Norman, both from Yarmouth, were indicted for "leude behavior each with other upon a bed." Mrs. Norman was also accused of "divers Lasivious speeches." Her sentence required that she make a public acknowledgement "of her unchast behavior" and included a warning that such conduct in the future would result in an unspecified harsher punishment. Inexplicably, Mary Hammond was "cleared with admonision." It is difficult to understand how one woman could be guilty and the other innocent, though it is possible that the court was more disturbed by Mrs. Norman's "lasivious speeches" than they were by her "leude behavior."
The soap-opera worthy case of Richard Berry and Teage Joanes: In 1649, Berry accused Joanes of sodomy, and both were ordered to attend the next court for trial. Berry also claimed that Joanes committed "unclean practisses" with Sarah Norman, the woman involved in the lesbian case. In the intervening six months between the accusation and the trial, however, Berry changed his mind and testified that he had lied, for which he was sentenced "to be whipte at the poste." If Berry's original intention had been merely to smear Joanes, it is difficult to understandwhy he would do it in such a way as to implicate himself. It is possible that the two men were lovers. Perhaps they had quarrelled, leading to the accusation, but later reconciled. Berry then decided to suffer the penalty for lying rather than have Joanes suffer the penalty for sodomy. Further evidence for this interpretation stems from a court order three years later when Jones and Berry "and others with them" were required to "part theire uncivell liveing together."
In 1637, for instance, Abraham Pottle, Walter Deuell, Webb Adey, and Thomas Roberts, accused of "disorderly liveing," were required "to give an account how they live."
William Latham was fined 40s for entertaining John Phillips in his house, contrary to the court's order. John Emerson was also fined for "entertaining other mens servants," though the sex of the servants is unmentioned. Anthony Bessie was indicted for "liveing alone disorderly, and afterwards for takeing in an inmate [boarder] without order." James Cole was acquitted of the charge of "entertaining townsmen in his house."
The one execution for homosexuality in New England occurred in the colony of New Haven in 1646, when William Plaine of Guilford was convicted of "unclean practices." Though a married man, Plaine reportedly committed sodomy with two men in England before coming to America. Once in Guilford, "he corrupted a great part of the youth . . . by masturbations, which he had committed and provoked others to the like above a hundred times." To make matters worse, this "monster in human shape," as John Winthrop called him, expressed atheistic opinions. Plaine received the death penalty, though it was probably his corruption of youth and his "frustrating the ordinance of marriage" that wished more heavily on the magistrate than the sodomy.

Totally innocuous post for JRWI fans!!
Which characters have you seen be the subject of genuine and in depth discussions of characterisation, motivations, backstories, etc?
^^^ This is a bit of a tricky question to phrase so let me give some examples. An example could be a lengthy essay on a PC's trauma and how it affect their actions in campaign. It could be someone's extensive headcanon of a minor character's backstory. Another example could be someone dumping about a villain's motivations and internal thoughts. Maybe someone just like draws them a bunch and constantly yells BLORBO, idk. Stuff along those lines.
I'm looking for ANY amount discussion, even if it's just one person who is really deranged about a character.
Characters I already have listed down include:
Chip, Jay Ferin, Gillion Tidestrider, Goobleck Arlin James, Drey Ferin, Finn Tidestrider Alphonze, Amanda Rinn, Apple, Aslana, Aster, Ava Ferin, Caspian, Captain Drake, Duke D Dukem, Edyn Tidestrider, Ella Teach, Felipe, Gryffon, Jayson Ferin, Captain Lizzie, Lunadeyis, Malenia Ferin, Malice, Marshall John, Niklaus Hendrix, Ollie, Pretzel, Queen, Reuben Price, The Elders
Ashe Winters, Dakota Cole, Vyncent Sol, William Wisp Ms Gilbert, Harlem Shade, Jason King Abstinence Boy, Alphonz, Bookworm, Cantrip, Chungus, Doug, Ghoul, Grayson, Lightspeed, Mallard Conway, Mark Winters, Min, Ram, Shockwave, Strider, Summer, Tide Lambert, Wordsmith, Ashe's Mom
Exandroth, Peter Sqloint, Rumi, Thanatos Aona, Elotl, Era, Lizard, Rymir, Thanatos (OG), Terran, Tristan, Yuri, Zuen
Kian Stone, Rolan Deep, Timothy Rand Becky, Jesse, Rachel Rand, Richie Sanders, Sarah
Aster Aeliana, Connor Connors, Ryan Selucreh Romeo
Br'aad Vengolor, Mountain, Sylnan Vengolor, Taxi, Velrisa Katherine, Redd Boye
Alastyr Cross, Flynn Gustwind, Kasper, Kroe Wyse
I need help because I!! Am not all seeing and all knowledgeable. I will edit this post with responses so check on the original before responding. Please and thank you!!

Thank you for adding all that wonderful context to my post about The Nine Tailors! And I look forward to your separate post about Agatha Christie being good at romance, because I've read a lot of her books and...well, I'm curious to hear your argument, we'll put it that way ;D
Thank YOU for posting the thing about The Nine Tailors, which I'd never heard of before and is so delightfully Sayers!
And... ok I need to clarify lol
One definite thing- and I don't think this is something I actually NEED to be saying outright- Sayers is MUCH better at writing romance than Christie, as such. I think she's also better at portraying the intricacies of human emotion and reaction and all those delicious things that make her books so vivid.
Where I think Christie is better is the synthesis, and at assembling pieces to synthesize.
Sayers does an absolutely beautiful job of CREATING characters- much of this is helped by, say, putting a lot of herself in both Peter and Harriet, as so many of the best writers do with their creations, and I'm sure putting plenty of other people into her other characters and basing settings on real environments (see John Cournos/Philip Boyes and Benson's/Pym's). She manages to make EVERYONE vividly human, which is a) a big job and b) often difficult to fit in around all of the machinations of a detective story, as Sayers so eloquently describes in Gaudy Night as Harriet Vane.
A lot of people criticize Christie for writing "archetypes." The thing is, though, that shouldn't be a criticism at all! She had a really brilliant gift for understanding stories, understanding the kinds of people who appear in stories, and manipulating the genre such that she's able to fit the right kinds of people around the right kinds of stories. That's actually why I tried to make the point that her strength isn't romance, because I think that's actually a weakness in her mysteries, when she decides she has to randomly pair people off. The thing that's great though is that she's able to customize the archetypes into entertaining and very readable people, these people do things for psychologically plausible reasons, and the motivations that they have and the mystery stories that they find themselves in end up syncing up incredibly well- and the whole built-up story ends up flowing absolutely seamlessly in a way that I think Sayers found a lot harder.
It's like Christie's playing in a Lego set and using a box of assorted pieces to put together in new configurations and make masterpieces- and Sayers is trying to combine the Lego bricks with more realistic-looking... Idunno, Barbies. Something that doesn't fit. The metaphor may be over-extended.
That's what's so fascinating about reading both the introduction to The Omnibus of Crime and then the later mystery novels that Sayers wrote, as I was saying. Sayers so clearly LOVES the genre, but she is also so clearly a literary stylist, an Intellectual (who had something of a sense of humor about it- but not entirely), and someone who had an incredible skill at characterization. She also understood the puzzle mystery and the detective genre in a way that few did, as one of the first real experts on it as a genre in the first place and as someone who not only researched its history (she traces it all the way back to the Bible and the ancient Greeks) but reviewed mystery novels and co-created the Detection Club. And it's precisely her deep understanding of the genre that made her realize, as she describes in Gaudy Night, how difficult it is to integrate deep character portraits into a relatively formulaic genre. I've seen it said that her books presage the modern crime thriller more than they reflect contemporaneous puzzle mysteries, and I think there's a lot of truth to that. She was learning the limitations of the genre she'd come to love.
In my opinion, Sayers's novel that does the best job of integrating the puzzle plot and the character work is Bellona Club, which I actually have a draft post about how incredibly underrated it is. She integrates both seamlessly, but you can also see how difficult it was, if only because she was rarely so successful tonally again. Probably the closest she comes are, weirdly, The Nine Tailors and Gaudy Night, but only because there she chooses whether she wants to foreground the novel or the crime (as I mention in my original post that started this whole tirade) and sticks to that. In books like Clouds of Witness, Have His Carcase, and Unnatural Death, to pick a random few, there are plenty of occasions where a chapter of exquisite literary character development is suddenly ground to a halt by an extremely technical disquisition about an extremely convoluted murder/coverup plot. (Something like Murder Must Advertise does this a bit less, but there the tonal issue is that, and I acknowledge this is arbitrary of me, the whole drug subplot does not work and that's where most of the detection is.)
Back to Christie, which is where all this started! What she has and Sayers doesn't isn't the ability to build complex characters (though honestly I don't doubt that she could if she wanted to- it's just not what she wants to do- and one of these days I'll read a Mary Westmacott and see if I'm right about that). It's the ability to build a complex story full of just-complex-enough people that feels authentic. The reason why her romances are among the weaker elements of her books is, in my opinion, because their actualization is generally the LEAST integral to the careful structures that she's building- however, the people who are part of the romances are often very strong, when the feelings that they have as part of those romances end up motivating something that they do. Take, for example, Death on the Nile- is the central romance the important part? No, the way that the characters in it act based on that romance is, because that directly influences the plot. And there she shines and it is all beautifully compelling.
In my opinion, Sayers was a brilliant writer and novelist who happened to enjoy detective fiction and so forced herself into the genre. Christie somehow magically managed to waltz her way into the exact right genre to suit her talents, right when the genre was exploding in popularity. Sayers is a more versatile and talented writer as a writer, but nobody ever owned the genre of detective stories, in all the ways that they could be written, like Christie did. With Sayers, we say "oh look she's getting experimental" with a book like The Nine Tailors or Gaudy Night or even, in a certain light, Five Red Herrings- we see her books in a pattern and context of the way her mind works and her life goes and her tastes change. With Christie, no matter how fertile and creative her mind and no matter how different the results are from each other, we're like "oh, that's classic Christie." Her versatility, and the way that she can change on a dime and be consistently great (for most of her career...) in so many different modes.

5, 10, 11 and 13 ? :3c
5. favourite song in your native language?
Oh, this is a tough one. For modern music I'd probably say "Kom hem nu" by Lars Winnerbäck, off his album Daugava, or "Flyktingarna" by Eskefeurat. For older music probably "Visa i Midsommartid".
10. most enjoyable swear word in your native language?
Kuken, probably (literally means "the dick"). At least that's what tends to slip out :-D but the one I just love the mouthfeel of is "sillstrypare" (herring strangler)!
11. favourite native writer/poet?
Oooh, another hard one... for older poets probably Gustaf Fröding or Karin Boye. For younger ones Daniel Boyacioglu. Fave author I must say John Ajvide Lindqvist, my favourite author to never re-read :-D
13. does your country (or family) have any specific superstitions or traditions that might seem strange to outsiders?
Svenskbiten (the Swedish piece). You can never take the last piece of something, a cake or a dish or something, you just keep slicing it in half indefinitely until it reaches absurdity. Very weird custom!

The first character I first fell in love with: You know that’ll be the man, the myth, the legend himself, John-117, aka the Master Chief :B
The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Jerome-092, gremlin boye from two Halo games I’ve never even played
The character everyone else loves that I don’t: Echo 216’s pilot, scruffy whatshisface. And no, it’s not just because I don’t acknowledge Infinite’s canon... I don’t mind Jega ’Rdomnai, for example... >.>
The character I love that everyone else hates: Nobody comes to mind, I don’t think
The character I used to love but don’t any longer: Same as previous answer :P
The character I would totally smooch: I would give Carter a kiss on the forehead, ’cause my man’s hella stressed. In a friendly way, dammit y’all
The character I’d want to be like: None of ’em
The character I’d slap: Colonel Ackerson
A pairing that I love: f!Six x Carter-A259. Shuuuuuuut, y’all knew what the answer was gonna be :B
A pairing that I despise: I wouldn’t say I despise any pairings, per se... But the idea of f!Six x Jorge is just. Weird. to me. Same with John x Kelly. Not my cup of tea

I'm calling this first team Olivia and a Half, because dude is barely there. I liked her previous costume too but she's also a smokeshow in this one. I'm convinced they're putting her in distracting costumes so we won't be looking at Tim, who desperately needs to discover that there's an audience there that he should be projecting to. Good outing, but it made me miss Adrian.
I'd give anything for Katerina's skirt lengths not to give me anxiety for one (1) season, and now she's added a long ponytail as well - why does she hate me so? These costumes are giving 2000s more than 80s. They desperately need our mother hen Madison Hubbell to take them under her wing, these unpointed toe kicks are not it.
Why are the Browns skating in what are essentially practice outfits to the famously flamboyant Elton John? Give these talented children funding! Otherwise they slayed, which is why I'm annoyed at the packaging. Best sibling team here, I said what I said.
HanYe with the costumes of the event and possibly the field. Only guy with an actual outfit. I wish her sleeves were attached to the bodice more in the front, we don't need armpit cleavage, but other than that, best dressed. Levels were oof. IAM needs to leave their teams with Paul Mac over the summer to learn how to execute their turns, they've got pretty much everything else figured out.
Holly and Jason looking hot af. I prefer her golden butt to Olivia's in the free. His corset-y mesh top - cunty af. Her bodysuit seems very intricate up close, but I wish that same level of attention went into getting their levels.
Taschlers look okay for a European team and the costumes are accurate for the music choice, but why oh why is the cutout on the side of his stomach round instead of matching her pointed one? Love their attack and unison but wish them better programs moving forward.
I actually like this French team this season and I hate that for me. His boatneck I'll allow because he isn't a broad boye but I'm not quite sure what his top has to do with the 80s. Her outfit is cute but I wish she'd move on from the Slutskaya cut and the henna dyejob to a more contemporary pixie or bob or something, they need to look more polished because they are indeed very trained and technically strong.
Marjo and Zak - my loves. The only ones I genuinely care about, not gonna lie. Seemingly the only team that read the ISU Communication on the theme this year. Fantastic campy costumes, killer performance ability, couldn't take my eyes off them. Noticed in the warmup that the costume designer shaded his butt crack as well and for that, that mofo need Jesus. They need to sort their levels situation out because they're the stars of the discipline, really, but we're not allowed to talk about that just yet (🤫).
Now for the crime of the night - the grand larceny that was Green/Parsons' score. They were the strongest team here across the board, they're the most complete all around, and I was fuming when I saw 4th. They def need to rework the cut but I like this better than the Paula, it suits them, the costumes weren't revolutionary but they both looked fine af. I know he's old enough to be her great uncle but at the same time I don't want them with lesser partners. The judges went out of their fucking way to prevent last year's situation when H/B (let's be honest) obliterated C/B. Maybe if G/Pa weren't coached by human silver medal and Canadian trophy husband Charlie Allen White, they wouldn't be in this mess.
And now for the grand finale - I'm dispatching a firing squad for the tech panel because are you seriously telling me that this team that graduated with honors from the Diana Davis School of Edgework is best-in-class??? And I can see what she was trying to do with the dress but she didn't quite nail it, the front is awkward, the mid-buttcheek zipper-like split in the back is a choice, and the skirt flaps around awkwardly. Meanwhile, Evan's outfit is just low-effort and perfunctory. They should've just put him in a white tank top and lightwash jeans to highlight his white basicness, since he wears her like a jacket for most of their programs anyway, it would've been apropos. They were out-skated but most of the teams here, they had no energy, speed, power or ice coverage, and to top it all off, they were on the edge of disaster in the lift again, and that was the only edge they were on the entire program. They deserve a surprise P/C comeback at this point, I can't take this anymore.
A masterpiece of a roast.
Anon, I want you to know I got three OTHER anons that were excited to hear about your fashion opinions.
Olivia and a Half is beyond correct, I can forget he's there if I squint, and I enjoy the program so much more. I honestly don't think the Browns have ever had a good costume, and that's a damn shame. If Paul MacIntosh cam to IAM, I would cheer for years, they really need a kick in the ass in terms of tech, and quickly. Holly looks so good in that gold outfit, it's wILD. French team I can't even get into, they are never not So Deeply French Looking. You are spot on with G/Pa, they do not deserve to be sitting in 5th right now. I also can't even get into C/B, cause it's just Too Much at the moment when I'm trying to switch into women mode for the short program that starts in 5 minutes.
Anon, you're a damn icon.

Dw geggy sort of scares me too-
YEAH. Gregory is a FANTASTIC character and I wonder what his motivations and backstory are like to make him that way but there are certain characters that make me feel like a bird got into the house and is flying around erratically above my head. Gregory is one of them.
LUFFY IS GENUINELY SCARY BECAUSE HE'S A SUPERPOWERED 14 YEAR OLD AND HE'S GOING TO KICK YOUR ASS (AND WILL ANNOUNCE AS MUCH BEFOREHAND!!) IF HE JUST DOESN'T LIKE YOUR VIBES OR PERHAPS YOU ARE IN THE WAY OF HIM KICKING SOMEONE ELSE'S ASS. HE'S BATSHIT CRAZY BUT DOESN'T MEAN ANY HARM. HE'S LIKE GOKU, HE HAS A GOAL HE'S GONNA REACH AND IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU'RE IN THE WAY BECAUSE HE'LL EITHER BEFRIEND OR FIGHT YOU TO GET THERE. I DON'T LIKE THAT HIS MOUTH OPENS SO WIDE AND, UNRELATEDLY, THAT HIS GUMS ARE VISIBLE MOST OF THE TIME. HE'S SPOOKY.
GREGGY BOYE WON AGAINST SIX ADVANCED ANIMATRONICS, ONE OF WHICH IS AN ABSOLUTELY GIGANTIC SPIDER, ALL OF WHICH ARE SMARTER THAN YOUR'S TRULY YES EVEN MONTY. YES EVEN MINI MUSIC MAN. We're NOT counting Sun because he wasn't ACTIVELY trying to kill Gregory he's just a bad babysitter. Gregory is also very small and scrawny for his age. AND HE STILL WON AGAINST PROLIFIC CHILD MURDERER PEEPAW WILLY AND HIS SCARY APPRENTICE VANNY/VANESSA WHO IS A TRAINED NIGHTGUARD AND HAS SCARY GLITCH SUPERPOWERS. And did I mention he's even younger than Luffy???? I don't actively fear Gregory but I acknowledge that he's BY DEFINITION a very scary kid. Less Scary than Luffy and Venti, mind you, because he's mostly just scared and trying to survive but his relationship with Freddy is very sweet and I love that in one of the endings he kept Freddy's head and freed Vanessa AND THEY ALL HAD SOME ICE CREAM TOGETHER AND WATCHED THE SUN RISE. I LOVE FOUND FAMILY. HE JUST NEEDS ENRICHMENT IN HIS ENCLOSURE AND THEN HE'LL STOP DISMEMBERING THE GLAMROCKS I PROMISE.
I'M NOT SURE WHY I FEAR VENTI FROM GENSHIN. PROBABLY BECAUSE VENTI IS BASICALLY JOHN CARPENTER'S THE THING™ AND I JUST. DON'T LIKE VENTI. ANCIENT GOD-THING LIVING IN IT'S FAVORITE BLORBO'S BODY. ABSOLUTELY NOT. NO THANK YOU. NO HATE TOWARDS PEOPLE WHO DO LIKE VENTI, ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS LOVES VENTI, BUT I JUST DON'T LIKE THEM. I CHECK UNDER THE BED BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP TO MAKE SURE VENTI ISN'T THERE AND CAN'T GET ME. SCARIEST CHARACTER IN THIS WHOLE LIST.
I don't know if anyone here watches Dimension 20, but if you do, you may have seen the Sugarplum Fairy from A Crown Of Candy, Dungeon Mastered by Brennan Lee Mulligan. He plays this character very well, and her whole thing is that she's a fairy, but she's incredibly powerful and wise, a very very old creature and her true form seems a little further beyond the average human's capabilites of understanding something larger than them, verging into Cosmic Horror/Biblically Accurate Angel territory. But she smiles and flutters around and pretends to be a very cute harmless fairy, she's ethereally beautiful and wants to help the main cast achieve their goal and is going to help them, thank The Bulb for that.
There's also Baron from The Baronies from the same show, during the Fantasy High campaign. Baron feeds off of one of the character's fears and insecurities, they want to be real but are made entirely from lies, and it torments Rizz Gukgak with Rizz's own words in its odd ethereal way. Baron is clearly something that is not human/real/worldly but is doing everything in it's power to seem real and part of Rizz's world, but is also doing it all wrong. Baron, unlike the Sugarplum Fairy, is not kind and in fact drags Rizz into the mirror world by his neck using strength he should not have in his tiny skeletal frame.
The reason I bring this up is because both of these characters remind me of Venti. Venti is otherworldly and is trying SO HARD to appear human, and while I respect that and understand Venti's struggles on a personal level, I still find him deeply scary as a concept. I would say the same for Zhongli, but Zhongli doesn't seem to be trying to appear human either. He reminds me of Paarthurnax, truth be told. He is a very old and tired dragon man, and wants the current strife he's in to be over so he can go sit on his giant dragon porch and drink some tea. Venti is that "Hello Fellow Kids" meme but Venti is just as ancient as Zhongli and still has Sickly Victorian Era Orphan energy at the same time?? Fascinating character, 10/10 makes my skin crawl.
#bug barks#chaireem#REMINDER THIS IS MY PERSONAL OPINION AND I'M BEING A LITTLE SILLY. VENTI IS A GREAT CHARACTER HE JUST ALSO SCARES THE SHIT OUTTA ME#LUFFY TOO. GREGORY IS VAGUELY THREATENING BUT NOT SCARY
