Morgan Freeman’s path to stardom is a story of patience and persistence. A true late bloomer, Freeman spent years working steady yet modest gigs, including his unforgettable role on the children’s classic The Electric Company. Yet, he didn’t land his first leading role in a feature film until his 50s. For many fans, one of Freeman’s first standout performances came in the 1989 movie Lean on Me, a film inspired by the remarkable true story of Joe Clark, the no-nonsense principal who turned around a struggling New Jersey high school.

During production, the real Joe Clark was often on set, observing his life come alive through Freeman’s portrayal. But at first, having Clark nearby wasn’t exactly easy for Freeman. Lean on Me is available on DVD and most digital platforms.
