International students in Toronto will be adversely affected by an impending federal rule that will limit them to working 24 hours a week off-campus when school is in session, students and advocates say. Immigration Minister Marc Miller said last spring the new rules would take effect in September, however a spokesperson for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada said in an email that the federal department is still working toward implementing the regulatory changes this fall. They could not provide a more specific timeline.  Miller previously said the 24-hour cap will ensure international students can focus on their studies, while having the option to work. "Students who want to come here have to realize that they can only work 24 hours in order to offset some of their costs or bring the material resources themselves when they come here," Miller said on April 29.

This would affect around 1.5 million Americans in Michigan and other states close to the border.
He then pretty much immediately followed up the announcement by saying he was considering giving the cops the right to forcefully remove homeless encampments. So. One step forward a dozen steps back
Trump reportedly responded to the sanctions by saying it was “fine”. Personally (opinion here forwards) it probably isn’t good to cut off power to 1.5 mil Americans (which will def affect the lower class pretty heavily) but Doug Ford actually might be doing something to try to help Canadians for possible the first time in his political career??

my mother insisting that it wouldn’t be too bad to drive to toronto given that “it’s just right up from where my high school friend lives in omaha” (omaha is nearly a straight shot down from winnipeg) [handshake emoji] my grandmother just now texting to ask if i am at all impacted by the nova scotia fires because direct quote “i think of toronto as being not too far from nova scotia”
it’s not just that my parents do not have even remotely a grasp of like, the most basic of canadian geography it is the sheer confidence with which they are wrong about it

Right now, I am employed. I got here by way of a contract position, and I impressed the office enough to convince them to let me stay on as a permanent employee. Great! I like the place, they like me, all good. I've been there a little over a month, and, as such, have stopped my job hunting. I'm still getting occasional e-mails from places I applied to with messages like "here's some more career opportunities available through our newsletter you signed up for" which is a nice reminder to cancel those subscriptions but
I'm also getting a few trickles of employment rejections. You know, those, "thanks for applying but we're moving forward with a different candidate" emails.
Well, this latest one I got today greets me and then says: "Thank you for taking the time to apply for [position at company]....
Unfortunately, the position you applied for is not being filled at this time..."
Alrighty then.
Unluckily for them, I kept every application email I ever sent, and every automated connection I ever got back in return.
I applied for that position on March 19th.
Almost 2 months to tell me that they're not filling the position, after all.
I wonder if they're letting me know all of a sudden because of the upcoming legislation...

As the federal government looks to drastically reduce its immigration targets over the next few years, the mayors of northern Ontario’s largest cities say they need more immigrants to sustain local economies and population. The mayors of Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay and Sudbury are calling on Ottawa to deliver on its promise to make permanent a pilot program that resettled skilled workers in their communities, saying a one-size-fits-all approach to immigration policy doesn’t benefit northern regions. Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Matthew Shoemaker said the now-closed rural and northern immigration pilot program allowed employers in the city to fill highly skilled positions in aircraft repair, engineering and various trades. “It has been an enormous success,” Shoemaker said, adding that without economic immigrants such jobs would disappear from the region.
