What is Design
Design is the practice of intentional creation to enhance the world. It is a field of doing and making, creating great products and services that fit human needs, that delight and inform. Design is exciting because it calls upon the arts and humanities, the social, physical, and biological sciences, engineering and business.
Design thinking comprises strategies for finding and solving problems by bringing an understanding of people and society to technology design, focusing upon finding the correct problem before rushing to a solution. We believe that design thinking skills will be a key success factor for a new generation of creative leaders in technology, business, and education.
Design's purview has widened from its historical focus on artifacts to its new, expanded role in developing services and experiences, and improving sustainability, health, and education. In earlier years, designers were trained in form, function, materials, and aesthetics. Today, culture and emotion are central, plus knowledge of societal issues, techniques for subtle persuasion, and the intricacies of complex, interdependent systems. Design education must change.
Design is a field of doers and makers. In the practical world, successful products and services require generalists who can cut horizontally across many of the deep, vertical specialties. Generalists cannot succeed without close collaboration with specialists, while the knowledge of a specialty is too limited to create an effective service or product for people without the aid of design generalists.
Is Design for Me ??
Weird is good :
Students are attracted to design in the first place because they see the world in a different way, slightly askew. They are weird. Most of them have heard this many times in their lives—and it was not intended as a compliment. But Weird is good; it’s an anomaly and it’s unique. If you look at any “successful” person, they are probably being paid to play out the goofiness or athleticism or nerdiness or curiosity they already possessed as a child. Unfortunately for most people, somewhere along the road their weirdness was taught out of them or, worse, shamed out of them. Crushed by the need to “fit in,” they left their quirks and special powers behind. But it is our flaws that make us interesting. We need to not only hang on to them, but hone them. I don’t try to make my students “Designers.” Weird is good, but only if we put it in your work.
Design is not math. This is what makes the work hard. There are no right answers and very few wrong answers. Design is more as an innate skill set that we are born with—a small ember waiting to be coaxed into a larger flame. If you know  how to use your  brains, to make your senses of association and imagery sharp and flexible and urge them to seek their own way and express their individuality and push yourself to think for self, form an opinion—and know that your opinions matter. Essentially, you have to “learn” to be yourself  and put it in your work.
DESIGN EDUCATION – A PARADAIGM SHIFT
“If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow.”
In today’s dynamic world, it is imperative to monitor and map trends that have far-reaching impact on the larger society and the resulting implications on preparing design students. Definitely the future requires a different skill set. Employers are more and more looking towards hiring quick learners who can easily swing from one role to another and in the process be more productive for an organization; a definite shift from specialized subject skills that are the primary outcome of a design education, towards life skills.
With the ever changing job market and the industry, flexible ‘new age’ courses are gaining favour among learners as compared to traditional courses and skills. Learners of today are increasingly opting for non-mainstream new age alternate career options.
The role of design and of designers is increasingly shifting towards innova- tion, creative problem-solving, co-creation and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Designers are increasingly invited to the table to tackle complex business, social, and environmental problems that require much more than a visual solution. Design in these contexts is more complex than styling or making; it is an iterative process of redefinition that often produces products, services and experiences that continue to evolve over time.
Design is no longer an elite and exclusive language of luxury products, brands, and services. In this capacity, a designer is no longer viewed as privileged genius, but rather as a strategic partner in a range of contexts from startups to large corporations and governments.
Fortune 500 companies that are not design studios or digital products are creating new positions at the executive level that place emphasis on design. It is becoming common to see designers at the top with titles like Chief Design Officer, Chief Creative Officer or VP of Design at companies like Hyundai-Kia, PepsiCo, Capital One, Johnson & Johnson, and 3M
future needs are also an urgent need . This reiterates that there is a need to reconstruct the education model towards inter-disciplinary approach and revolutionize curriculum by merging and making them more progressive, responsive, real-time, and learner driven (what will industry offer and student readiness for it). A shift from:
·       Disciplinary to inter-disciplinary/ multi-disciplinary;
·       Specialized to holistic
·       Fixed path learning to flexi path approach
·       Product based to systems based
Employability trends: expectation from a young graduate
We are driven by economy of sales and economies of time, which are changing fast and so are the related needs and expectations. ‘Those whom the left-brain corporate masters tolerated as an interesting distraction but not really relevant to the main game, are now not only becoming the main game, they’re rewriting its rules. Designers who were once the barbarians at the gates now have the keys to the kingdom
In a qualitative study, over the last one-year, many design professionals and educators in India were spoken with through formal/ informal interactions in the form of focus group meetings and one on one discussion. These professionals were experts from various domains including product design, accessory design, fashion, visual and interactive communication, advertising, media and journalism, sports management, hotel management. Some important insights were brought forth.
When hiring a fresh graduate, design professionals look for relevant skills and capabilities over degrees. During interaction with industry experts, most of them stated that there is not much distinction in recruiting masters and bachelor level graduates. The preferred candidate should be well aware and be able to incorporate global as well as local factors while demonstrating responsibility towards ethical practices in design delivery.
With continuously changing scenario and the organization structure also altering from clear verticals to network based structure, there is a need for GENERALISTS rather than Specialists, who adapt from one role to another. There is a need for people who will solve BUSINESS PROBLEMS and not just design problems. Graduates should showcase the ability to develop new innovative ideas or improvement to products and processes. They should be able to develop and apply strategic thinking, critical analysis leading to innovative user centred responses.
Looking at the future trends, there is an increased demand for those who can effectively collaborate/connect and work in trans-disciplinary teams, while understanding the importance of individual role and responsiveness in an engaging and collaborative learning environment. There should be increased emphasis on research to generate wise designers who act more as consultants than as pure designers (as they are traditionally described)
Industry prefers to hire graduates with enthusiastic ‘ATTITUDE’ and appropriate ‘SKILLS.’ Experts further elaborate attitude as:
·       Risk taker, challenge the norms, entrepreneurial mindset, adaptability, embracing (open to change and ideas), bring passion to work, patience, multi-tasker, and partnership with technology.
·       Graduate should be passionate about the area of specialization, should show ownership of the creative idea and be excited by it. He/she should have the thinking acumen, should be good with people, should be creative, insightful and a planner. Passionate people with fresh ideas. People who love their work – be proud – be able to say ‘wow’
·       Person not desirous of being in their box
·       Awareness of the ecosystem - Curious about what’s happening in ‘design’. Understand what’s happening in the world
·       Exposure, Willingness & Adaptability: Ability to adapt and quickly pick up nuances of change

BBDO’S JOSY PAUL ON THE RISING POWER OF EMOTIONAL DATA

What is emotional data? It’s data of the soul – the stuff you won’t find through research panels, said Josy Paul, Chairman of BBDO, in his talk for AD STARS 2021.
Josy Paul’s session at AD STARS 2021 revealed what a good listener he is. When he meets with clients, he listens deeply to their thoughts, concerns, worries and stories in his quest to unearth “emotional data”.
According to Paul, emotional data lives deep inside us in a place where no big data can get to. If we can reach this deep place of truth – where human beings reveal their true selves, their true anxieties and their joys and loves – if we can get there, we can create magic.
How do you get there? It always start with having deep empathy. When we began to talk about our own vulnerabilities, or reflect on why we do or buy things,it can lead to an opening up. You have to be a human being with weaknesses; – and that’s how we get the truths, Paul said.
To illustrate the point, Paul explained the ‘emotional data’ that inspired the following campaigns.
‘Touch the pickle’ for Whisper (P&G)
“While the briefing session was on, I asked: ‘Why is it for the last 30 years I’ve been seeing communication from sanitary napkins showing blue not red? Why can’t we do a campaign that shows blood?’ Immediately, the environment changed; women in that room began to speak a lot more. They unveiled all of these period taboos that have been around for centuries – why can’t we take on and challenge these taboos?
“What happened after we created that campaign was completely unprecedented. In India, a period is treated like a curse – don’t enter the kitchen; don’t worship; don’t touch the pickle or it will rot when touched by an ‘impure’ woman. Whisper decided it was time to bust these myths. Showing a woman touching the pickle in a TVC… it sparked a flood of debate about a topic that Indians were finally talking about. The activism that resulted from that provocation is still going on today – it was a briefing session that turned to a therapy session, almost.”

P&G – Ariel – ‘Share the Load’ (2016)
“This campaign has been running for the last five years, and it asks, ‘Why is laundry only a mother’s job?’ It’s another example of a hidden truth that no one was talking about. I call this emotional archaeology – it’s hiding in the layers of our lives; we don’t realize we’re carrying these things around with us. Today, Ariel is leading the conversation about gender roles. Sales are up 76% and 2.1 million Indian men have pledged to share the load.”
Release the pressure – Miranda (Pepsico, 2017)
In this campaign for Miranda, BBDO India created an open letter to parents from their kids explaining the pressure they feel: “Believe me, I’m working very hard. You only talk about competition and marks. I find myself in tears. I feel suffocated. Do you know, I really try hard.”
According to Paul, this idea all happened because of a coffee session with the client: “We spoke about the kind of work that’s impacting India. He mentioned the pressure he’s facing at home because his daughter is applying to study abroad. I could sense there was something there; I could feel what he was going through. So during a two day workshop, I raised the topic of what children are going through during exams. I knew it would touch a cord. I spoke as though it came from all of us, but the truth is it came from the client. I explained that this is what everyone is going through, but the client realized it was connecting with his truth, too.”

To conclude, Paul revealed that many of these campaigns have changed him, too. “Every piece of work I’ve showed you – often the person it impacts most is yourself. It’s you writing a truth and then it changes you – that is the greatest work, when it impacts you so deeply it moves you to change yourself. All of these ideas are not what you find in research. They are based on confessions – emotional data.”

Pace of vaccine rollout dissuades Asia stocks from tracking Wall Street rally
Asian shares were mixed Friday as jubilance over positive U.S. economic data and a Wall Street record high were tempered by caution in the region, where the coronavirus vaccine rollout has lagged.

The contrast in the speed of the vaccine rollout has been striking between the U.S. and Asia. Nearly half of American adults have gotten at least one dose of the vaccine, and about 30% of adults in the U.S. have been fully vaccinated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Japan, where inoculations for the public have barely started, has seen a resurgence of infections in recent weeks. A top ruling party official suggested the possibility of canceling the Tokyo Olympics, set to start in July, if infections continue to surge.
Prakash Sakpal and Nicholas Mapa, senior economists for ING, said the markets are watching the meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and President Joe Biden, set for the weekend, data from China, including GDP and retail sales, as well as for further news on the pandemic.
“Asian markets will likely track gains overnight with optimism driven by positive US data highlighted by retail sales. Investors now turn their focus to a string of China data reports,” they said in a report.
Wall Street notched more milestones, as a broad market rally pushed the S&P 500 SPX to an all-time high and the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA crossed above the 34,000 mark for the first time.
The S&P 500 rose 1.1%, with technology, healthcare and communication stocks accounting for much of the upward move. Only energy and financial companies closed lower. Bond yields BX:TMUBMUSD10Y fell.
The rally came as investors welcomed a suite of encouraging economic reports showing how hungry Americans are to spend again, how fewer workers are losing their jobs and how much fatter corporate profits are getting.
Expectations are very high on Wall Street that the economy — and thus corporate profits — are in the midst of exploding out of the cavern created by the pandemic, thanks to COVID-19 vaccinations and massive support from the U.S. government and Federal Reserve. New data on retail sales and jobless claims Thursday helped bolster the view that the economic recovery is accelerating.

“Another day, another record,” said Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer for Independent Advisor Alliance. “The stock market continues to validate the optimistic forecasts from last year, which predicted a strong economy that was driven by consumers emerging from their homes, emboldened by vaccinations or by a belief that the worst of COVID was behind us.”

The S&P 500 rose 45.76 points to 4,170.42, surpassing its previous record high of 4,141.59 set on Tuesday. The Dow climbed 305.10 points, or 0.9%, to 34,035.99.
The Nasdaq composite added 180.92 points, or 1.3%, to 14,038.76, while the Russell 2000 RUT index of smaller companies picked up 9.35 points, or 0.4%, to 2,257.07.
U.S. retail sales jumped 9.8% in March from February, blowing past economists’ forecasts for 5.5% growth. Much of the surge was due to $1,400 payments from the U.S. government’s latest economic rescue effort hitting households’ bank accounts.
Economists said it shows how primed people are to spend as the economy reopens and conditions brighten. That’s huge for an economy that’s made up mostly of consumer spending.
Another report gave an encouraging read on the job market, showing 576,000 people applied for unemployment benefits last week. That’s well below the 700,000 that economists had forecast and down from 769,000 the prior week. It’s also the lowest number since the pandemic.
Adding to the optimism, more big U.S. companies reported even healthier profits for the first three months of 2021 than analysts had forecast. Expectations are already high for this earnings reporting season, which unofficially got underway on Wednesday and could result in the strongest growth in more than a decade.
“You’ve got various pockets of the market now starting to show a broadening recovery,” said Sameer Samana, senior global market strategist at Wells Fargo Investment Institute.
BlackRock BLK, PepsiCo PEP and UnitedHealth Group UNH all reported bigger profits for the first quarter than analysts expected. BlackRock rose 2.1%, PepsiCo added 0.1% and UnitedHealth climbed 3.8%.
Even Delta Air Lines DAL, which reported weaker results for the start of 2021 than expected, highlighted areas of optimism. It said it could return to making profits by late summer if the recovery it’s seeing in air travel continues. Its shares fell 2.8%.
In energy trading, benchmark U.S. crude UK:CRUDE OIL - WTI CRUDE OIL - ELECTRONIC fell 19 cents to $63.27 a barrel. Brent crude UK:BRENT CRUDE, the international standard, slipped 19 cents to $66.75 a barrel.

At 10% of current gross domestic product, doled out over eight years, the plan reads like a Rooseveltian blueprint for economic and social engineering. More than $600 billion would go to conventional projects like roads, bridges, and public transit. There is $374 billion for tech, according to Goldman Sachs, including rural broadband, modernizing the electric grid, clean-energy storage, and electric vehicles.
U.S. manufacturing and research and development would receive subsidies and incentives worth $480 billion. And $500 billion would go for the caregiving economy and workforce development.
Packages like this bring out the knives in Congress. Opposition is already building over the cost and funding mechanism, including an increase in the corporate tax rate to 28%. Without Republican support in the Senate, where Democrats can’t afford a single defection, a bill would need to pass under complex budget reconciliation rules and wouldn’t be ready for a vote until the summer.
All of this assumes that financial markets cooperate. Ultralow interest rates are keeping a lid on the Treasury’s funding costs. But Treasury yields have been rising as traders price in higher inflation and widening deficits due to all of the fiscal stimulus that has already been injected—$5 trillion and counting. The Biden plan won’t pay for itself for 15 years, assuming its tax increases hold up. Higher deficits imply more Treasury issuance at potentially higher yields, raising the bill on taxpayers.
Another caveat is that infrastructure spending is like an intravenous drip that trickles through the economy’s veins for years. There aren’t enough “shovel-ready” projects to soak up anything close to $2 trillion. Indeed, infrastructure may be the messiest form of stimulus: It is distributed unevenly to states and localities, held up by zoning and contracting issues, and overseen by a patchwork of federal and state environmental rules. The economy may benefit long term from stronger growth and productivity gains, but it won’t happen right away.

Visual Artist Creates Hope Amidst Chaos
While times are uncertain, young Middle Eastern artists are paving the way towards a brighter future with their unbridled passion and creative ingenuity. Hannah Patten has proven that millennials are taking their role as curators of the arts seriously and that the MENA region’s legacy of artistry is still alive and well. We sat down with Cairo native Hannah Patten to ask her about life as a creative and how she uses art to create hope.

For the people that don’t know, can you explain what a visual jockey does?
A VJ is in charge of visually curating a show and aesthetic theme relevant to the event, music, venue and audience. In events, this can either be done by physically mapping onto a surface with a projector or directly feeding the visuals onto LED screens – it really depends on what you are working with. There are a range of programs that can be used that allow you to manipulate your content as you see fit. In my mind, you get to create an identity and soul for the event, which is an amazing privilege. 
How did your journey as an artist begin? Was there a pivotal moment when you decided to follow your passion for art?
I have always been a sucker for anything aesthetically pleasing, and as the years passed, on my obsession grew along with my confidence and I started sharing my findings online just for fun. I had no clue however about visuals or about wanting to go into this field. I had worked in the nightlife scene for a couple of years by then so I had already seen a lot of visuals but never really put it together myself. The big moment that happened for me was when I was trying to leave Egypt. I was being interviewed for the job of my dreams at the time in Amsterdam with a music festival (sigh) and was about two interviews in, when in a casual conversation one of my friends suggested that if the job doesn’t work out, since I love visual arts so much, that I should take a course. In my head I was already in Amsterdam walking into my new office with a kick in my step. I ended up not getting the job and my heart was crushed. I was down, so I took the jump and tried to distract myself from what seemed to be the biggest failure of my life. As cliche as it sounds, it seemed a bit like fate and the course changed my life.

How did you start out?
I have been lucky to be a part of a lot of diverse events. Nightlife events is how I personally started out. Having worked in the party scene for a couple of years already, I was lucky enough to have a good base of contacts who trusted me, so I was getting regular work and given the chance to experiment on the go from the very beginning. I was new and trying to make this craft my own. I was listening to fantastic music, around people I loved and doing something that called out to me. The scene was on fire! I got to work with a lot of different organizers who all had different visions, so the versatility pushed me a lot and their trust in me motivated me to experiment.
You have brushed shoulders with some very famous people! What types of events have you visually curated?
I have worked on a wide range of events from corporate events such as the Gouna Film Festival After Party in 2018, the Kings Polo After Party featuring Nelly and Tyga, the Pepsico School league signing with SL Benfica, restaurant launches, fashion events and private events. The first event I worked outside of parties, I was so confused…I was in a completely new setting. It was an interesting shift from the super wild visual sets that I was used to doing in parties – and it shaped my interest in working outside of my comfort zone. Here I had been a year or so thinking my work could only apply to one environment, when in reality you can shape yourself around the event and make it your own. 
Have you ever done visuals for a wedding?
My first wedding then came along. Visuals in weddings were not something of the norm at the time, so being a part of this new wave was such a thrill for me. I love to be able to contribute to a couples’ special day and more often than not, I tend to tear up a little during the first dance. A lot of the couples I have worked with end up being great friends so weddings just hold a very special place for me.

You are always challenging yourself, what was your latest adventure?
My latest new adventure was a music concert for Hamaki at Cairo Festival City. This concert was a huge milestone for me because it was my first one. Not to mention, I was using completely new equipment on the day that I had not used before with a crowd of 10,000 people or more. There is nothing more touching than sharing your vision on a screen that size, to that many people and having that connection with them. It’s a very overwhelming feeling and several times during the night, I was simply in disbelief that I was doing it. You take a step back and you’re like, “yas Hannah yas!”
Do you think that art has the power to affect any kind of social change?
Art has the ability to change anything. It can inspire you, drive you, anger you and educate you – and from all these emotions comes a reaction (on whatever size scale). This reaction is the change. Art is a very personal thing for me; it has made me more confident and more expressive. When I visited Atelier des Lumieres in Paris two years ago to see their Gustav Klimt show, I was so overwhelmed with the exhibition that I sat on the floor and cried. Atelier is Paris’s first digital art center featuring 120 video projectors and spacial discrete audio with controlled directivity that lets you walk through an immersive show of these artists. It’s breathtaking. In terms of social change, you can say that this is a new way of seeing art as opposed to previous generations, instead of seeing a painting on a wall in a museum alone, you get to walk through it and watch it shift below your feet and onto the ceiling. You feel at one with the audience and the artist; that kind of beauty will only give light to positive energies within the community and that’s where the change is.
How do you think the artistic community has changed in Cairo in the last five years? 
Wow, honestly, the community here has exploded in the last five years. You have kids in school dropping out to pursue the arts, you have retired artists jumping back in the game, and it has become quite a delicious cocktail of characters! What I would say is that there definitely a heightened sense of personal identity and a mentality of “I’m going to do whatever I want to do, and if you don’t like it…” well you can guess the rest.  That’s where the gold is. There is a misconception of “oh no one was around back then or what?” but that’s not true, artists have always been around. We just need a community to nurture and feed us. Social media as well has blown things off its hinges; you can literally message any artist you like now and almost automatically get a response, so collaborations are easier to do, experimenting is highly encouraged and you have a whole community willing to do that with you. It’s brilliant!

Many managers and supervisors find themselves in this trap. They fail to change how they “lead” and they continue to obtain the same results time after time. They have the impression that leadership is “one size fits all.” So, they use the same style with each person and situation they are trying to influence. It is similar to only having a hammer in your toolkit. You treat everything as a nail.
The people you are trying to lead are individuals with different needs, wants, motivations, education, training, etc. They approach their jobs with different levels of ability and motivation. Some are extremely capable and highly motivated; others are the uninitiated and untrained. What can we do to lead them? Many rely upon one approach and would use the same leadership style regardless of their individual differences.
We need as leaders to be adaptable and recognize and respect the individual differences that our people demonstrate. Conducting a situational analysis and developing an understanding of the differences that exist and strategies for effectively influencing others is to me what leadership is all about.
Actually there are three steps we must pursue in order to be successful at leadership. These three are: planning, strategizing, and communicating. Without performing them well, we won’t be successful. In our workshops on leadership, we focus on the importance of planning in both understanding the employees we are attempting to influence and the specific steps for communicating with individual employees based on a situational analysis and a defined strategy.,
This approach provides employees with the individual recognition from the leader and simultaneously assists the leader in accomplishing their purpose, to influence the behaviour of the employee. This strategy can help lead to a “win-win” for the employee and the leader. The employee feels understood and appreciated; the leader feels successful in applying a different approach. With more tools of planning, strategizing and communicating leaders can increase their effectiveness.
