How better to say goodbye to Shabbat than with a little Havdalah hike?

Today my first graders are choosing where to donate our Tzedakah. I told them about a couple charities, and one of them is a charity for Holocaust survivors living in poverty.
When I said “Holocaust survivors” I was met with a bunch of little blank stares.
Oh boy.
“The Holocaust is something bad that happened to us about 80 years ago.”
“What happened”
“A lot of people got hurt.”
“Why?”
“Because some people are mean”
“-and they don’t like Jewish people” a little girl finishes for me.
“Right”
“And there was a war going on”
“At the same time. Right. ”
Then one of the kids asks “who won?”
I don’t hesitate
“We won. We’re still here. Every day that we are alive is a day where we have won.”
They were quiet for a moment but then they took it in.
“We won. We’re still here”

one of the things I think a lot of goyim esp western based don’t clock about Jews is that a lot of the places we lived before mass immigration to the US&west and the creation of the state of Israel not only often pretty violently killed or expelled us, but were and are sights of continual warfare and dislocation that was and continued to be fucked up by external and internal conflict, by the direct actions of the British ottoman French American and Russian imperialisms….. Jews only became a “western” people through the acts of violent dislocations from our homelands we’d often lived in for hundreds and thousands of years.
We lived in Afghanistan. We lived in Yemen. We lived in Iraq. We lived in Serbia. We lived in Bosnia & Herzegovina. We lived in Belarus. We lived in Ethiopia. We lived in Algeria. We lived in Morocco. We lived in Syria. We lived in Iran. We lived in Kurdistan. And we lived in Ukraine. We often have complicated histories with these places, varying extents to which we identified with them or with the nationalisms that drew their borders, but we lived there, and in so many ways, from our language to stories to food, we carry them with us and are hurt by the loss of their memory in our lives, pushed into the diaspora of the diaspora. None of this justifies the often profoundly violent antisemitisms we found there, nor should it allow for simple rounds of flag waving - our communities were almost always older than the modern states, and many institutionalized Jewishness as something irreconcilable from the modern National Citizen. But we lived there. Inextricably we are a part of their history, just as they are a part of us.
Any simplistic takes about how Israeli jews should just LEAVE AND GO HOME without understanding the contexts of why that isn’t possible not only whitewashes histories of violent antisemitism but also the CURRENT ongoing realities in many of the countries we lived in, and it comes off not only as callous to Jews but to the people who continue to live there, after our links were severed. Any antizionism that doesn’t seriously reckon with these histories is incomplete. “Why don’t you go back to where you came from?” The American goy asks. I think of my friends and community. To Odessa? Or to Baghdad? To Aleppo? Or to Herat? YOU TELL ME.

My favorite leftist take is that they say, without irony or self reflection that 90% of Jews are the antisemitic ones. Antisemitism is the crime of Jews, who are Nazis now. including American Jewish school children.
“Jews are the real Jew haters, they should die.” - leftists and tankies
Incredible.

man the other thing that drives me crazy abt the whole "claiming judaism is an ethnicity and religion is race science just like the NAZIS" is that like....
what the nazis believed in was a mythical race of white europeans who were stronger and better than everyone else. they had 0 scientific, historic, or archeological proof of this. it was just a crackpot theory proposed to explain why white europeans were "better" than everyone else and provided an ideal for them to strive back to bc they thought that "pure" race had been tainted by racial "interbreeding"
jews saying judaism is an ethnicity is not bc it's in the fucking tanakh that they came from judea. it's bc there's MOUNTAINS of historical and archeological proof that jews came from that area. there's historical proof of people encountering jews in the middle east. there's firsthand accounts from jews themselves that survived diaspora that lived in that area. jewish DNA, regardless of other race, has a great deal of similarity w arabic DNA. there's MOUNTAINS of historical and archeological evidence that traces the movement of jews OUT of the area and into the rest of the world and the subsequent movement of jews for the next few thousand years as they kept getting kicked out or murdered
does any of that mean that israel should have displaced the people already living there and subjected them to decades of inequality and atrocity? fucking obviously not. but 1) denying historical and archeological fact to throw around your pet antisemitic conspiracy theory makes you sound like a qanon fuckass and 2) comparing that to white supremacists making up a mythical pure white race is just fucking insane and incredibly deeply antisemitic
like you don't have to make shit up to condemn what israel is doing, I promise you. you can acknowledge the nuance and hardship of history without condoning what israel does. israel doesn't need to be made up of pure europeans for you to criticize it. bc believe it or not, europeans are not the only people on earth capable of committing atrocities or having enough autonomy to do so.

Me messaging a guy on a dating app after we've been chatting for a bit:
Btw is that a Magen David in your second picture?
Him, understandably wary: yes.....
Me, realising the implication of just straight up being like "are you a Jew?" and frantically taking a selfie where you can see mine so as to prove I'm not about to be a massive racist: SNAP

Ok so my grandma(dad side) went to a special institution that do research on you family name and give your this weird certificate that explains sruff about the family name, origin, meaning etc. So she did on 4 family names:
Her husband's
Hers-dad side
Her mother's - dad side
Her mother's (again)- mother side
And APPARENTLY i have a linage of THREE important rabbis(which one was literally a sofer stam) but that's not all- one of the family names can be traced to RASHI(רש"י) himself???
AND NOT ONLY THAT, which is HUGE, but there's a big fat chance RASHI is a descendant of THE KING DAVID?????
"european" MY ASS NOT ONLY IM NATIVE JEWISH I ALSO MIGHT HAVE A ROYAL HERITAGE????
I know there are another like thousands who should have it too but literally wtfff
I am so psyched out of my mind WHAT THE HELL

the term achillean doesn't exist because achilles was Such A Cool Guy. achilles and patroclus have been really important figures in gay history because they are explicitly heroes from a revered time period AND read as queer men. making a term out of some random greek dude no one has heard of is never going to be as impactful as a word which references one of the major figures in queer literary history that gay men have been referencing for centuries. hello

An orthodox man sits beside me in the passport office and chances are we are the only Jews in the room. And it is completely by chance that we ended up side by side.
I have an overwhelming urge to connect with him, to say something. I know what it feels like to be a Jew in our society today, nevermind what it feels like to be visibly Jewish. I don’t want him to feel alone. I don’t want to feel alone.
I want to turn to him and say “m’diber ivrit?” because I know he does, I saw the script on his screen, but I hesitate because *I* don’t diber ivrit
I feel like I’m sitting beside a brother but who knows? This man may not feel the same way. He might be busy. He might not be a chatty guy.
We don’t talk to strangers in Canada, but we’re only Canadian by nationality.
There’s no tactful way to say “you’re a yid? Me too!” and it’s better, probably, that we don’t bring any attention to ourselves by jewing to loudly.
I run the Hebrew sentence over and over again in my head.
My number is called.
I walk up to the counter. I don’t say a word.
