Hot take 🔥: neither belong on latkes (half joking). In all seriousness, I eat my latkes plain. But at least applesauce is edible for me on its own even if it’s not my fave. I do like apples 🍎. Sour cream 🥴. So if I had to choose one, it’s the apples.

🎭 Purim or Chanukah?

Purim Purim Purim! No but in all seriousness, Purim is my favorite Jewish holiday of all time. I feel like it is especially applicable to these times plus I really like the food and costumes.

Chanukah is good but 8 nights is a lot…and I kinda feel like media oversaturated Chanukah because of its proximity to another December holiday.

Not to say that Chanukah is bad at all, but Purim has it beat by a lot. Also, fried food has a hard time storing and traveling well…The great news about both holidays are that they are low stress holidays.

🤦 Shema or Modeh Ani

Shema! This is a prayer fundamental traditionally said twice a day. These were the words that allowed me to become a Jew when I underwent mikveh immersion. Not only that but the Shema is way easier to learn.

Also as far as I know but I may be wrong, Modeh Ani is only said in the morning while Shema can be said any time.

🎶 'Lecha Dodi' or 'Shalom Aleichem'?

Lecha Dodi! 👰‍♀️ There are several tunes and 8 verses (wish we would do all 8 verses in reform synagogue but a girl can dream 💭). Plus the first letter of each verse spells out an acrostic of the author’s name. And the verses are all different. I will say though that although Shalom Aleichem is easier to learn, it can’t compare to the dizzying heights and references of Lecha Dodi.

I really got this big struggle with my conversion. My shul and rabbi is in Stockholm, 2h - 3h away with train but I really wanna make it work and my contact person told me she's more than happy to follow me when she is not working or busy. But no one in my family knows i'm converting, I really don't know how to tell them. One thing to solve the distance problem would be moving closer but I don't have that money. And there's been so much violence and shootings in Stockholm lately. On Januari 29th we've had 33 bombings that month, we had more attacks than Januari has days that month..... I would not feel safe at all living there.

I don't want to assume that you're looking for advice, so what I will do is empathize with you.

My rabbi and conversion classes are about two to three hours away, too. The only way I've been able to make it work is through online - but it still isn't ideal. I want you to know that you can make it happen, though it might look different

I also didn't tell my family, though some found out because people apparently like gossip. While you don't necessarily need to tell them, but it does make it more difficult sometimes - I definitely get where you're coming from.

I know it's hard, and you deserve to express all of your feelings about the conversion process - including the 'negative' aspects. I just don't want for you to feel like you're alone or that you can't convert at all. I hope you feel safe to express this in general - though whether it's here in this particular community is not relevant (but you are more than welcome here!).

your last post about Erez Oved is still tagged with "homophobia," and I fear that this is another case of "oops we got outraged because we got our news on Tumblr."

Oved is an actor who identifies as bi/pansexual. He is VERY open about Yakov Levy being a character he created for the song "conversion therapy," which highlights the absolutely shameful practice of conversion therapy which is still very rampant in religious circles.

I can't imagine his intent is to defraud anyone, because he want to be recognized as himself so people hire him for their projects and buy his book. I mentioned this on the post, but the last "incriminating" screenshot is promoting the above mentioned short. To him, and anyone who is vaguely familiar with Israeli media, his Yakov Levy character is just an exploration of the Haredi world he encountered while researching a role.

(and he was born and raised in Jerusalem, so I'm not even sure he doesn't come from a modern orthodox or traditional family. He surely has at least secondhand experience with religion, it's unavoidable in Jerusalem)

Is it in good taste? Is it a valid way of giving a voice to religious queer folks in Bnei Brak, who you can be damn sure have no social media presence of their own to leverage? Should he have made it clearer to an international audience that this is a character he's exploring? Is it a little cynical and patronizing? All debatable, and I definitely see all sides of the argument. But calling other queer Jews homophobic is just... Nah.

I tagged it as homophobia because in case people didn't want to see something that could be seen as homophobia, which it could. He is taking the voice away of actual queer orthodox jews who live in communities they can't be open in, and telling the world that their experience is easy and supportive, which simply isn't true. It can be dangerous to be gay in a lot of orthodox communities. I didn't call him homophobic and I don't think I ever questioned if he was Israeli? AFAIK that's irrelevant.

He was not open at all about it being a character. That's what the problem was. He didn't tell people that he was just an actor and he wasn't even chassidic. His "apology" was essentially patting himself on the back for solving homophobia in the charedi community. He is still trying to sweep his actions under the rug and post like normal as this character. His comments are full of people still calling him out or people who don't know it's a character and calling him brave for being gay and orthodox.

tonio lafilleduregiment is endearingly bad at french whereas marie has the mouth of sailor (despite the best efforts of the regiment to raise her to be as ladylike as possible, at least wrt not swearing constantly. they failed </3). she eagerly tries to tutor him to improve and it does not go well

jewish leporello isn't even a headcanon to me in my heart and soul i know it to be a fact and lorenzo daponte told me so in a dream. anyway i think rigoletto is also jewish but like in a "converted to catholicism during an inquisition and raised gilda to be 100% disconnected from judaism to keep her safe" kind of way, but i think he absolutely resents it both because of what it cost him and because it didn't even work (ie jewish converts to xtianity were historically still targets of antisemitism whoopeee i love it here (SARCASM)). the thing about rigoletto as a story/representation of ostracization due to disability is that that shit runs extraordinarily parallel to the experience of ostracization due to other identifying characteristics like race and religion.

also this isn't so much a headcanon as it is a statement that i want to put serpina laservapadrona, depsina cosifantutte, and dulcamara lelisirdamore into a room together and see what happens
