New York Calls (Jersey Too) 🍂

In May 2022, I took my first vacation in nearly 20 years—a mental health break that changed my life. New York City wasn’t just a destination; it was a turning point. I returned home inspired by two friends, my mom, and my late uncle to write my first book, New York Calling. Published on October 16, 2022, it encouraged readers to prioritise their mental health.

Before leaving NYC in June 2022, I wrote a letter to my future self and asked my cousin Nawal Jes to keep it until I returned. On October 23, 2023, she handed it back to me, marking the start of my second journey.

This trip was different—less about mental health and more about solitude, reconnection, and spirituality. Even my parents noticed and were proud of how much I’d grown spiritually. My best friend Daniel Chew said it best: “Your first trip was a mental health break; your second, a soulful awakening.”

After returning to Kuala Lumpur, I poured everything into my second book, New York Called (Jersey Too). Over five days, I typed 200,000 words, though only 30,000 made the final cut. Launched on February 17, 2024, it reflects a voice I truly discovered on this trip, as my editor noted when comparing it to my first book.

In November 2024, I watched Alex Cisse’s video, Moving to New-York (do watch it, it’s elite). It reminded me how much NYC and Jersey meant to me. Featuring a voiceover from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Rio Morales’ words hit me deeply: “Just don’t get lost.”

Inspired, I reached out to Haqim, the brother of my Better Call Sukan podcast co-host Arief Danial Together, we created this reel.

New York City and Jersey gave me so much, and I hope I gave back in my own way. As Benny Cruz once said through his art: “New York is the end of your past and the place of rebirth.” One Hundred Percent!
