“The action revolves around 12-year-old Vi’s decision to make the biological transition from Victor to Violet. Vi (Toni Reali) has a clear picture of the future; Vi’s supportive, perplexed parents do not. Bird and Pilar (Jeremy DeCarlos and Adyana de la Torre-Brucker) worry that their child may be exposed to hatred, ridicule or discrimination. When Vi’s feelings about fried food change month to month, how can so momentous a decision be made in middle school?
Vi complicates matters by getting a crush on gay best friend Jacob (Alec Celis), which sends Jacob’s mom (Amy Wada) into a tailspin. After watching Internet videos by a glamorous non-binary performance artist (Alex Aguilar), who appears as a mermaid and speaks metaphorically of a realm where there’s no need to choose a gender, Vi makes a video that goes viral and precipitates a crisis.
. . .
Had Valdes Greenwood written this play early in the ’10s, it might have been a plea for tolerance. Now he presumes we’re familiar enough with transgender issues to assume Vi’s self-awareness makes this gender decision a good one.
. . .
Tumblr media
Some critics have argued that the extraordinarily diverse casting – African-American dad, Latina mom, gay son, Japanese-American mom, transitioned and transitioning people – makes the play didactic, like a homily saying we’re one big wonderful human rainbow.
That wouldn’t have occurred to me: I just saw the world I inhabit during the 21st century, full of people whose stories I may dimly or wholly appreciate according to my background and inclinations. If watching humanity onstage this way still seems like a novelty, you haven’t looked around you very closely.”

Laia Costa & Thomas Mann in Trailer for Romantic Hiking Film 'Maine'
"I don't know, I've never felt like that…" Orion Pictures has released an official trailer for an indie romantic drama titled Maine, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. While solo thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, a married woman from Spain's journey to reclaim her identity becomes sidetracked when a lone American hiker pursues her. Laia Costa (from Victoria, Newness, Life Itself) stars in the film, with Thomas Mann, and a small cast including Pete Burris, Jeremy DeCarlos, Pat Dortch, Yossie Mulyadi, and director Matthew Brown. I quite like this trailer, it's a bit unconventional and patches the footage together in an interesting way. This romance story isn't new, but it is always heart-wrenching to see. ›››

Hitting the (Monroe) Road With a Slightly Toned-Down Rock of Ages
Review: Rock of Ages at The Barn @ MoRA  By Perry Tannenbaum As the exit ramp from the pandemic keeps getting longer, summertime urges to break out of isolation, let loose, and rock out aren’t likely to back up now. In this confused and anxious moment, Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte has taken a nicely calculated route to satisfying these urges, moving from their established HQ at Queens University…

Forget the famous nickname for a second. Like only a handful of jazz artists – instrumentalists Miles Davis and John Coltrane come to mind – Billie Holiday’s vocal career had a distinctive arc, leaving the diva’s fans with a blithe and sunny early period of recordings, a forceful and dramatic middle period, and a worldly wise and…

Review: Silence! The Musical By Perry Tannenbaum
Tumblr media
From God of Carnage to Hand to God to The Toxic Avenger and beyond, I’ve seen many of the original Broadway and Off-Broadway shows that Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte has gone on to present in their Queen City premieres. What is singular about Silence! The Musical, perhaps unprecedented, is the fact that the original New York production at PS122…

Review: The Mermaid Hour By Perry Tannenbaum
Two years ago, when The Mermaid Hourfirst came to town as a reading stage production at Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte, the David Valdes Greenwood script seemed fresh, urgent, and dramatic. In the binary world of 2016, the 12-year-old child at the heart of this story, Vi, née Victor, was pressuring her parents to let her start taking hormone blockers,…
