I am so glad the new kdramas are bringing back the specific brand of loser men. You know which brand I'm talking about. The Ahn "min min" Minhyuk brand of loser men and I'm loving it. The "I worship this goddess and I'm so in love with her and I can't believe I get to love her. Oh my gods I love her so much" brand of loser men. And we're being fed so well with lovely runner, love next door, no gain no love, my demon, Cinderella at 2am, Hierarchy, Midnight Romance in Hagwon, doctor slump, Queen of tears, welcome to samdal-ri and even good partner (yes it's one sided but the dedication and yuri's couple too).
We need more fictional loser men who worship women to satiate our eldest independent daughter desires.

The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call Review
Tumblr media
Cast: Ju Ji Hoon, Choo Young Woo, Ha Young
Genre: Medical Drama, Action, Comedy Elements
The 8-episode short series is about a Trauma Center in a renowned university hospital. Baek Gang Hyeok is an expert surgeon newly appointed to head the trauma team in the hospital. He takes a younger doctor, Yang Jae Won, under his wing along with an experienced, spirited nurse, Cheon Jang Mi. Together, this team faces various challenges every day and develops a bond over time.
Tumblr media
I was looking forward to this drama since it has Ju Ji Hoon in it, and watching him perform is always a pleasure. As expected, he delivered and devoured his role as a genius doctor who is spontaneous, confident and sincere. His matter-of-fact personality comes off as “rude” and irks many colleagues and seniors at work, but he always speaks with his craft. He radiates confidence and peculiar charm, and his one-liners about how much he believes in himself give comic relief to the audience. The performance of Baek Gang Hyeok truly leaves an impression and I wanted to see more of him.
Tumblr media
The other actors also did really well. I have not seen much of Choo Young Woo, but him as Yang Jae Won was so memorable. His emotions and reactions to situations were so relatable and funny at times as well. Watching one of his interviews where he mentioned he studied for this role with a professor is reflected clearly in his dedicated performance. Ha Young as the cheerful yet serious senior nurse in the trauma center is the strength that holds the team together. Them, along with an anaesthesiologist who touches our hearts towards the end together become a formidable team headed by Baek Gang Hyeok.
Tumblr media
The show also has a lot of other familiar faces as supporting characters, and each of them bring their own elements and plot devices to the show. The show is focused throughout the eight episodes, absolutely no-nonsense and made with high precision. The audience can clearly see the amount of effort that went into making the show and this realism enamours us. This has to be one of the best medical shows I have seen in a while. Whether you are new to kdramas, fans of the actors or not, if you need an entertaining show that will leave you satisfied in the end, 10/10 absolutely recommend The Trauma Code. And believe me when I say, you will fall in love with Ju Ji Hoon :)

Hierarchy
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
Hierarchy (2024, South Korea)
Director: Bae Hyeon Jin
Writer: Chu Hye Mi
Mini-review:
Oof, what a disappointment. I feel like this wanted to be one of those transgressive teen shows we get in the West, but then it didn't have the guts to go all the way and ended up being like any other kdrama about the rich and the poor. And even then, it's just not good at that either. The writing leaves a lot to be desired, and it gets more boring with every episode. The acting is also all over the place; some of the actors do a solid job, but most of them are mediocre or downright terrible. Tbh, there are two things that save this drama from disaster: firstly, the director adds a lot of style and flair to the proceedings; secondly, sometimes it's fun to see a bunch of super pretty people all together in one place. But still, there are a lot of shows where you can find those things with much better quality. I wouldn't recommend Hierarchy, unless you really love someone in the cast...

THE TRAUMA CODE: HEROES ON CALL
GENRES: Medical Procedural, Drama, Comedy
SUMMARY: Dr. Baek Kang Hyuk can do everything from on-site triage to black ops maneuvers, but can he also successfully revitalize an underfunded and mismanaged hospital medical team?
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Haribo snacks, bunkbeds, Goryeo celadon tea sets, despicable hospital admins, chill anesthesiologists, helicopters, private military friendships, and terrible nicknames.
HOT TAKE: This show is short and sweet in the best ways possible. You gotta love a web novel adaptation for their dedication to simple, motivated characters, easy to deal with b-plots, and a refreshing boldness in not taking itself too seriously.
Honestly my only complaint about this show is the hair they chose for Jeong Jae Kwang's character. You gotta be kidding me with that long hair situation, fam.
Oh, and a high five to all my fellow Ju Ji Hoon fans out there. 2024/2025 is our year for enjoying a tsunami of long-awaited comebacks!

Obsessed (2014) and Decision to Leave (2022)
If I had a dollar for every time a disaffected married Korean man with a respected job no longer has any love for his wife and instead falls for a mysterious Chinese woman who likes birds, I'd have two dollars, which could probably buy 1 lamb skewer in Flushing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Top: Decision to Leave, Bottom: Obsessed)
Both are heavy in symbolism, both mostly follow the perspective of the man, both have him go through an existential crisis as result of his affair, and both end in tragedy. Only one of them actually uses a Chinese actress though, Tang Wei, who is as frightening as ever. It almost seemed like her character in Lust Caution survived execution and grew to become a real killer.
What is interesting to me is that Korean media seems to regard Chinese women, and maybe Chinese people in general, with a kind of uncouthness, roughness, and danger that is nevertheless alluring and exotic. I think of how much Koreans love Twice's Tzuyu. In both these movies, the Chinese woman is looked down upon by Korean society at large, which in turn forces her under the care of exploitative men. Shunned by society externally, she becomes connected to a sensitive Korean man who begins to reject the society internally. The man becomes obsessed with the beautiful foreigner, the obsession driven by the taboo nature. Their affair (steamy or metaphorical) causes both to enter a downward spiral that ends in disaster and death. I will say, the execution of this affair is a lot better in Decision to Leave; the reason for demise is not a straightforward "heartbreak", but a more complex mutually parasitic/destructive relationship. Tang Wei's character claims she didn't truly begin to love the detective until he had violated his convictions as a law enforcer to allow her to escape justice for the crime he just solved. In contrast, Lim Ji-yeon's Chinese woman is very...passive. She resigns herself to her role in the society, though it was brave of her to refuse the colonel's final advances. Sometimes it takes courage to be unromantic.
These two subdued Chinese beauties also remind me of Shu Qi's character in "I Married A Gangster", who is a ill-tempered kungfu fighting bad b*tch who is in Korea for some reason. I didn't continue the movie after 5 minutes because the sword dance she was doing in the beginning that ended in her massacring the attending mafia felt very cringe and stereotypical.
This instance in turn brings up Detective Ma in Extreme Job, the relentless (male) cop who displays an arsenal of surprising talents, one of which is speaking Chinese (which is barely discernable to me) to a group of drug-selling Chinese gangsters.
We can go into all sorts of analysis about where these archetypes come from, but I won't do that; I'm just gonna admit it's a little fun being seen as vaguely unwholesome.

Normally, I start to remember my past lives between the ages of 8 and 12. The memories flood me like waves. I remember everything from who I was to what I did. My good lives fill me with longing, while my bad lives bring me pain. I wish they were just dreams. But they’re real. I remember my past lives. Let me tell you my story.

Vigilante
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
Vigilante (2023, South Korea)
Director: Choi Jeong Yeol
Writer: Lee Min Seob (based on the webtoon by CRG & Kim Kyu Sam)
Mini-review:
I love shows and movies that focus on the moral conflicts of vigilantism. It's always a fascinating topic, and Vigilante delves deep into it. I feel like some people won't be happy with this drama's take, though, cause there are points were it pretty much justifies the main character's actions. However, that's what makes him even more interesting, and Nam Joo Hyuk gives a pretty solid performance in the darkest role of his career (special mention to his speech in episode 6). That being said, the show is so short that it barely has time to develop the characters and their connections. I don't know who decided to make only 8 x 40-45 minute episodes, but it wasn't a good idea. The whole thing feels rather rushed, and it doesn't take the necessary time to properly set all its stakes. It's definitely enjoyable, but it would have been even better as full-length drama.
