Shannen Doherty's Courageous Life: How the 90210 Star Made It Her Mission to Inspire Others Amid Cancer Diagnosis
The actress, who died at 53 following almost a decade with breast cancer, faced life’s ups and downs with strength and humor
By JP Mangalindan
Published on July 15, 2024 02:40PM EDT
When Shannen Doherty reunited with her Beverly Hills, 90210 castmates for a 90s Con panel in Tampa, Florida in September 2023, she welled up with tears as she received a standing ovation from the audience and her castmates alike. Just three months before, the actress had shared on social media that her stage 4 breast cancer had spread to her brain. Wiping her eyes, she expressed her gratitude. “Thank you so much,” Doherty told the crowd, adding, “I have a fight for my life that I deal with every day.”
Doherty's remarkable journey ended on July 13 when she died at age 53 nearly a decade after she was diagnosed with cancer. She was surrounded by loved ones and her beloved dog Bowie. Tributes poured in, a testament to a woman whose acting career touched generations of viewers and whose cancer advocacy inspired others.
“Shannen was young and so courageous. By sharing her journey, she has helped so many,” former 90210 costar Gabrielle Carteris says in this week's PEOPLE cover story, on newsstands Friday.
Her friend and follow cast member Brian Austin Green honored her on social media: “You were a big part of my understanding of love. I’ll miss you more than I know how to process right now. Thank you for the gift of you.”
Noted Jason Priestley: “She was a force of nature.”
Even as “things turned much more difficult in the last couple of weeks, we just kept loving and hoping and supporting and fighting,” says Doherty’s friend and oncologist Dr. Lawrence Piro, who was with her in her final moments.
Still, Doherty never let her work ethic and determination diminish. On June 24 she announced on her podcast Let’s Be Clear that she was beginning a new round of chemotherapy. Just days before her death she recorded five episodes of The House of Halliwell, a Charmed rewatch podcast she was cohosting with former costars Holly Marie Combs, Brian Krause and Drew Fuller.
“Too young, too talented, too loving, too grateful, too early,” Krause said in the July 15 episode. “Shannen was just so motivated and determined to help make this show a success.”
Born in 1971 in Memphis to John Thomas, who worked in a bank, and Rosa, a beauty parlor owner, Doherty learned resilience early on. When Doherty was 8, Rosa was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm with a 10 percent chance of survival and beat the odds. “I come from a woman who was determined,” Doherty told PEOPLE in November 2023. "She impressed that upon me as a very young child."
The pair remained close throughout Doherty's life. "She is my beautiful girl and my heart," Rosa tells PEOPLE.
Doherty's family, including her brother Sean, moved to Los Angeles in the late 1970s. A few years later, when Doherty was 11, she landed the part of Jenny Wilder on Little House on the Prairie.
In 1989, she showed off her darker side in Heathers, playing a member of a high school’s popular clique. Then Doherty was cast as rebellious Brenda Walsh on Beverly Hills, 90210, where she and her telegenic costars were catapulted to a stratospheric level of fame.
Being thrust to the forefront of pop culture was surreal for the actress. During a magazine cover shoot with costars Priestley and Luke Perry in 1992, Doherty recalled being awestruck by the show's popularity. “We were all looking at each other like, ‘This is amazing,’” she said in 2008. “To be 18, 19 years old, and having a show blow up almost overnight, was overwhelming.”
As her status was rising, she remained grounded. She spent her first big check from the show helping her father, who was having health issues, pay his medical bills. “He was the example of what every man should strive to be,” she wrote last year in honor of his birthday; he died in 2010 nearly a year after suffering a stroke. “My father was the best man that ever walked this earth.”
Doherty's unabashed frankness became something of a calling card over the years. “I think that growing up on TV in the ‘90s as a woman was very different than it is currently, and I like to say that some of us sort of paved the way,” she said in 2023. “Women are taking such huge strides in the world currently. Being on 90210 and being someone who didn’t necessarily play by the rules, I didn’t placate the men in my business.”
Her 90210 costar Tori Spelling applauded her on Instagram. "She was a rebel in an era when most women didn’t feel comfortable being strong," Spelling wrote. "She always stuck up for me. Always had my back. Always believed in me when I didn’t or couldn’t believe in myself."
Actress Rose McGowan said Doherty “had the heart of a lion” in her social media tribute. “Passion for craft is often mislabeled as trouble. Shannen was passion.”
Although she was let go from 90210 after the fourth season, she’d clearly made an impression on mega producer Aaron Spelling, who cast Doherty in another of his TV projects destined for cultural relevance, the WB supernatural drama Charmed. Prue Halliwell, the eldest of three sisters-turned-witches, became another memorable role for Doherty.
The actress worked steadily in the years that followed, popping up in TV movies, starring in the short-lived reality TV show Breaking Up with Shannen Doherty and competing on Dancing with the Stars. In 2019, she appeared with several of the original 90210 cast members on the cheeky, short-lived revival BH90210.
Doherty did not have any children, though she said she “always wanted” to be a mom. She was married three times and agreed to finalize her divorce from photographer Kurt Iswarienko one day before she died. She often looked back on her romantic relationships with humor.
“Listen, Elizabeth Taylor still has me beat as far as husbands and divorces, so I’m good. I’m not there yet, so there’s no reason to be negative about it,” she told PEOPLE in 2023. “S--- happens.”
Decades of ups and downs in Hollywood had made Doherty a private person. But following her breast cancer diagnosis in 2015, she had an epiphany. “When I got cancer the first time, it was this really beautiful thing, because it finally stripped all of that away,” she said in 2020. “Those walls were, like, eliminated. That sort of childhood resentment — 19 to me is childhood — was gone.”
She revealed she was in remission in April 2017, but when she announced in 2020 that the cancer had returned, Doherty had a steadfast determination to live life to the fullest. She continued to work, raised money for breast cancer awareness, supported animal rights charities and chose to spend more time with those closest to her, including her mom, actresses Sarah Michelle Gellar and Roma Downey and real estate agent Chris Cortazzo.
"How do you possibly find the right words to sum up 30 years of friendship? I keep reminding myself it only hurts this much because, there was so much love," Gellar, 47, wrote on Instagram before urging followers to honor her friend by supporting animal rights charities, a cause Doherty cared about deeply.
In 2023 Doherty debuted her Let’s Be Clear podcast, where she was open about her career, the great loves of her life and living with cancer.
“I’m not done,” Doherty said last year. “I’m not done with living. I’m not done with loving. I’m not done with creating. I’m not done with hopefully changing things for the better.”
It was crucial for the actress to prove that people with cancer could still live full lives and make meaningful contributions. “People just assume that it means you can’t walk, you can’t eat, you can’t work. They put you out to pasture at a very early age — ‘You’re done, you’re retired,’ and we’re not,” she told PEOPLE in 2023. “We’re vibrant, and we have such a different outlook on life. We are people who want to work, embrace life and keep moving forward.”
Her experience, she said, allowed her to peer into life’s greater depths. “You really have to dig deep to face cancer, and in that you find all the stuff that you had hidden away,” she said in 2021. “And it’s beautiful things that you find. You find the vulnerability, you find your trust in people again, you find forgiveness.”
Doherty often expressed gratitude — “I wake up and go to bed thanking God, praying for the things that matter to me without asking for too much” — even as her cancer thwarted aggressive treatments like radiation therapy.
Still, “I’m not afraid of death,” she told PEOPLE in November 2023 when she revealed her cancer had spread to her bones. “I know where I’m going — and I know the people that I’m going to see."

Title: The Call of the Wrens
Author: Jenni L. Walsh
This was such a wonderful story, and I loved seeing how these two women’s experiences related to one another even though their journeys began decades apart.
Marion grew up in an orphanage, but when she reached the age of eighteen in 1917 and didn’t have a penny to her name, her only option was to join the Women’s Royal Navy Service, also known as the “Wrens”. She then became a motorcycle despatch rider and was assigned to train and deliver carrier pigeons. Her best friend Eddie, who also grew up alongside her in the orphanage, joined the military to be closer to her, and though they thought they had their whole lives ahead of them, tragedy struck and put a halt to their plans.
Evelyn was a society girl who overcame a childhood disability, and against her family’s wishes, she joined the Wrens just as England entered WWII. With a passion for automobile racing, she too became a despatch rider to help in the war effort. Though it had been a long time since she served, Marion received an unwelcome call to return and help her fellow Wrens, and it was then that she crossed paths with Evelyn.
I loved that this story was told from two POVs in two different time periods but at some point their worlds gradually collided. I also really admired Marion for having lived and served through two wars, all while still processing some of the lowest points of her life. Her ability to persevere and still fulfill her duty to the Wrens was truly inspiring. Highly recommend this book!

LYNNE WALSH looks ahead to the biggest radical feminist conference in Europe, FiLiA, which takes place over two days in October
SOME of us have cynical definitions of “conference”: interesting people talking about boring things or boring people talking about interesting things — or the worst combination of those two.
You get the picture. Let’s face it: we’ve all been there. There are conferences where you leave more exhausted than energised; there are events which turn out to be uneventful, there are summits which plummet.
And then there is FiLiA.
This is a two-day event, the biggest radical feminist conference in Europe, which delivers a breathtakingly fine series of speakers, as well as providing opportunities aplenty for women (and a few male allies) to plan, regroup, support one another, spark new ideas and action — and dance.
This year’s event, on October 16 and 17 in Portsmouth, includes sessions from journalists Jenni Murray, Julie Bindel and Joan Smith, lesbian feminist scholar Sheila Jeffreys, and Harriet Wistrich, founder and director of the Centre for Women’s Justice.
There are stalwarts of the women’s movement at every turn. Gill Hague, activist, practitioner and researcher on violence against women nationally and internationally since the early 1970s, is the professor emerita of violence against women studies at the University of Bristol.
She co-founded the Centre for Gender and Violence Research, School for Policy Studies at the University of Bristol.
Her book, History and Memories of the Domestic Violence Movement, published in May this year, is a passionate and assiduous account of this arena.
Its strapline is “We’ve come further than you think” — just what we need, to encourage us to persist.
She tells it like it is. When she speaks about her international work, and perhaps especially that involving Uganda, Hague is uncompromising, though there is “honey in the rock”; she cares deeply about injustice towards women and girls, and that has clearly always fuelled her dedication.
She says of her work: “As I get older, I feel I can look back with pride; this is a fantastic way to spend the one human life we have.”
And so say all of us.
Choosing from the FiLiA conference agenda is no easy task. Here are only a few of the sessions: Misbehaving: Stories of Protest Against the Miss World Contest and the Beauty Industry; Not Dead Yet: Feminism, Passion and Women's Liberation; Political Participation of Migrant Women, and Police Perpetrated Abuse.
It’s no wonder that one woman attending the 2019 event said: “FiLiA galvanises women — it is without a doubt one of my lifelong conference experiences — and I have been to many.”
Lisa-Marie Taylor, chief executive officer, sums it up: “FiLiA is a place where local, national and global women come together to network, learn from each other, plot the overthrow of patriarchy and to party!
“We’ve received messages from women in Norway, Germany, Spain, the US and more saying they’ve heard about FiLiA and they are coming over — this is incredible to us, and a testament to global consciousness-raising around the rights of women and girls, as well as the desire to gather together wherever and whenever we can.”
These annual gatherings have always had a real international feel, and with good reason.
Delegates greeting one another may be social media mates, but that’s never all they are.
There are campaigns and actions linking women’s rights activists across the world, from Kurdistan to Latin America to Ireland, Israel, India and Ukraine. There are speakers from all these movements on the FiLiA conference agenda.
Typical of this ongoing, FiLiA-inspired, global campaigning is a project focused on a refugee camp in Kenya.
Lesbian refugees escaping violence and lesbophobia in their home country were sent by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to the Kakuma camp, in Turkana County, one of the poorest areas of Kenya.
It’s been a refugee camp since 1992, and currently has 160,000 displaced people. Those facts stand alone as a damning indictment.
As the women were seeking asylum due to their sexuality, they were put in the LGBT Block 13 — named with a grim irony.
This, of course, identified them to other refugees in the camp; they’ve suffered violence and abuse as a result.
The women have told FiLiA about a lack of food, constant physical and sexual abuse and lack of basic shelter for them and the other LGB&T refugees in Block 13.
Also recently announced as a speaker is Joanna Cherry, the SNP MP for Edinburgh South West since 2015.
She said recently, of LGBT+ history month: “…these days the L is very much an afterthought and many people have forgotten the contribution made by lesbian feminists of my generation to fighting homophobia and discrimination.
“At a time when the SNP was still undecided about Section 28, I was out on the streets campaigning against it. A large part of my career as a lawyer was spent standing up for women’s rights and prosecuting sex crimes against women and children. So it is particularly galling to be misrepresented by those who have come late to the field of the battle for equality.”
Feminist philosopher Jane Clare Jones speaks in a session called The Radical Notion: Female Class Politics / Founding The Countess, Advocating For Women And Children In Ireland.
The countess in question is Constance Markievicz, the first woman elected to the parliament at Westminster, in 1918. Then representing Sinn Fein, she did not take her seat.
Founder of “The Countess” Laoise UI Aodha de Brun points out that Markievicz “attended her first political meeting aged 41 — it’s never too late to effect change.”
The agenda promises this session will get to the heart of some tight issues: “Many people claim feminism is a form of ‘identity politics,’ but women’s oppression is not a matter of ‘identity,’ but of the material exploitation of women’s bodies and labour.
“This panel will explore why feminism is better thought of as a type of class politics.
“What are the implications for feminist activism and theory of understanding feminism as ‘female class politics’? How might this help us rectify some of the mistakes feminism has made in the past, and reimagine the future of feminism?”
In the session FiLiA Stands with Sex Trade Survivors, Yulia Dorokhovah will speak about the work she does as director of the sex workers’ self-organisation in Ukraine.
This is the NGO All-Ukrainian League “Legalife,” aimed at combating sexual slavery, human trafficking and violence against sex workers.
The two-day happening is to be Covid-compliant, with proof either of vaccinations or of a negative test. The extra regulations are not daunting delegates, many of whom registered as soon as they could.
Another delegate to the 2019 conference told organisers: “FiLiA is Radfem Glastonbury: you see all your mates, get to see the living legends, and it takes three weeks to recover.”
True, in some ways — though we can’t really afford that long recovery time. There is work to do. Thankfully, there are great women to work alongside.
Conference details: filia.org.uk/tickets. You can support the Kakuma refugees here: filia.org.uk/kakuma-campaign.

If you’re interested, please don’t hesitate to contact me! Like I said I would love any cats bootleg- especially the older ones in English and Dutch from like the 80′s till the 00′s. I am also looking for more diversity in my list- and I’m also looking for the classics- Dear Evan Hansen, Falsetto’s, some more Phantom Of the Opera, Mean Girls, Legally Blond, etc...

[18+ advised ] This is going to be long af. I’m going to do my best to put everything - all my writing on this blog, in one goddamn place, but I make no promises, so forgive me in advance. Below the cut is everything I’ve written and posted, for every single fandom I’ve written for so far. If [mature] or [suggestive] is present in the title/post, 18+ only. If you’re looin for y/n here, you won’t really find it. I prefer to use oc’s in writing most of the time because it’s easier for me.
** the titles in bold and not linked I either haven’t written or I’ve lost the link for. jsyk. I do that so that when/if I get around to writing something, it’s already got a place. It’s weird, I’m weird.**
If you want to be on the taglist for my writing, you can find that [here]. If you want to know what I write / how often I write and stuff like that, my faq/about post is [here]

Ultimate MBTI Fictional Characters List
Disclaimer: whenever I’m refering to a literary character, I am going to specify the name of the author of the literary work that he belongs to and its original publication date; instead, whenever I’m refering to a cinematic or a tv character, I’m going to specify only the period of time in which the movie or tv show I’m talking about was on air. Shannen Doherty Tears Up as She Receives a Standing Ovation During the 'Beverly Hills, 90210' Panel at 90s Con
The 'BH, 90210' cast came together once again at 90s Con, this time in Tampa, Florida, with Doherty giving fans an update on her cancer journey

Shannen Doherty had an emotional reunion with her Beverly Hills, 90210 castmates this weekend.
Original cast members from the popular '90s teen drama — including Doherty, Tori Spelling, Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Brian Austin Green and Gabrielle Carteris — came together on stage Sunday to discuss the series and take questions from fans during a 90s Con panel hosted by PEOPLE Senior Editor Breanne L. Heldman in Tampa, Florida.
Toward the end of the panel, Doherty, who has stage 4 breast cancer, received a standing ovation from the audience, causing her to tear up.
"Thank you so much," an emotional Doherty, 52, said to the crowd. "You guys know how much I love crying constantly. And I do, it seems. So, thank you."
In June, Doherty shared that the cancer had spread to her brain and posted a video on Instagram of her undergoing radiation therapy. She had a tumor removed from her head after a CT scan determined that the cancer cells spread from their original site to the brain. "I have a fight for my life, that I deal with every day," Doherty said on Sunday. "I think I am really great."
Doherty joked about something else she thinks she's great at. "My other profession is getting engaged, married and divorced, and I'm doing that very well," said the star, who split in April from her third husband, photographer Kurt Iswarienko after 11 years of marriage.
Next up, Doherty — best known for starring as Brenda Walsh on Beverly Hills, 90210 andPrue Halliwell on Charmed — will launch a podcast in November.
"It’s going to be called Let’s Be Clear, and it’s a live interactive memoir," Doherty shared on Sunday. "So you get to hear everything that I’ve refused to say before. I’m spilling the tea, but nicely!"
She also talked up 50-year-old Green's podcast, Old-ish. "It’s amazing," Doherty said. "So make sure you’re listening to it. Thank you for your love."
Doherty has been open about her cancer journey for years. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, which went into remission in 2017. She then announced in 2020 that her cancer had returned.
“Our life doesn’t end the minute we get that diagnosis," she told Good Morning America in February 2020. "We still have some living to do.”
During the Charmed panel at 90s Con in Connecticut in March, also moderated by Heldman, Doherty gave a positive update on her health.
In June, Doherty offered another update about the surgery she underwent in January. "January 12, the first round of radiation took place," Doherty explained, alongside an Instagram video of her receiving radiation therapy. "My fear is obvious. I am extremely claustrophobic, and there was a lot going on in my life."
Doherty admitted she felt scared before the surgery. "The fear was overwhelming to me. Scared of all possible bad outcomes, worried about leaving my mom and how that would impact her," she said on Instagram. "Worried that I would come out of surgery not me anymore. This is what cancer can look like.”
In August, as she continued undergoing treatment for breast cancer, Doherty was photographed vacationing on Italy's Amalfi Coast in the fishing village of Nerano, diningal fresco with friends.
Beverly Hills, 90210 aired on Fox from 1990 to 2000 for 10 seasons. There were several spin-offs, including Melrose Place and The Heights, and also a 90210 reboot series featuring some original cast members that aired on The CW between 2008 and 2013. Additionally, the short-lived revival BH90210 aired in 2019.
Over the years, the BH90210 castmates stayed friendly and have been seen together at various events, including last March for the second 90s Con, held at the Connecticut Convention Center.
90s Con Florida began Friday at the Tampa Convention Center and wrapped Sunday. Event organizer That's 4 Entertainment also held a number of other major cast reunions during the convention, including Full House, Saved by the Bell and Charmed.
