Beast of Gévaudan
In the mid 18th century women and children were found torn apart, dismembered, or decapitated in the quiet French province of Gévaudan. These were the first of nearly a hundred attacks perpetrated by a mysterious animal dubbed as the Beast of Gévaudan.
From 1764 to 1767, in the historical region of Gévaudan, located in southern France, and in adjacent areas, about one hundred children, youths, and women were killed by a so-called “Beast”. Numerous other humans survived the attacks, many of them seriously injured. The series of attacks has been confirmed by a great variety of historical documents and is not called into question by scientists.
Historians claim that wolves, or a hybrid of a wolf and a domestic dog, had attacked the victims; the “hybrid-assumption” is based on the description of a canid, shot in June 1767, that was said to have strange morphological characteristics. However, a critical evaluation of historical texts, including the publications of the French abbots François Fabre and Pierre Pourcher, revealed that neither this animal, nor any other wolf killed in Gévaudan, had anything to do with the attacks of the Beast.
Descriptions of the time vary, and reports may have been greatly exaggerated due to public hysteria, but the Beast was generally described as a wolf-like canine with a tall, lean frame capable of taking great strides. It had an elongated head similar to that of a greyhound, with a flattened snout, pointed ears, and a wide mouth sitting atop a broad chest. The Beast’s tail was also said to have been notably longer than a wolf’s, with a tuft at the end. The Beast’s fur was described as tawny or russet in colour but its back was streaked with black and a white heart-shaped pattern was noted on its underbelly.
About 95 percent of the carnivore attacks on humans in Gévaudan during the years 1764 to 1767 can be attributed to that single animal that was referred to as la bête: The Beast. There is no doubt that the remaining attacks were executed by rabid and non-rabid wolves. Wolves were a common species at that time and therefore easily recognized by the rural population.
The Beast of Gévaudan committed its first recorded attack in the early summer of 1764. A young woman named Marie Jeanne Valet, who was tending cattle in the Mercoire forest near the town of Langogne in the eastern part of Gévaudan, saw the Beast come at her. However, the bulls in the herd charged the Beast, keeping it at bay. They then drove it off after it attacked a second time. Shortly afterwards the first official victim of the Beast was recorded: 14-year-old Janne Boulet was killed near the village of Les Hubacs near Langogne.
Throughout the remainder of 1764, more attacks were reported across the region. Very soon terror gripped the populace because the Beast was repeatedly preying on lone men, women, and children as they tended livestock in the forests around Gévaudan. Reports note that the Beast seemed only to target the victim’s head or neck regions.
On January 12, 1765, Jacques Portefaix and seven friends were attacked by the Beast. After several attacks, they drove it away by staying grouped together. The encounter eventually came to the attention of King Louis XV, who awarded 300 livres to Portefaix and another 350 livres to be shared among his companions. The livre was the currency of Kingdom of France and its predecessor state of West Francia from 781 to 1794. The king also directed that Portefaix be educated at the state’s expense. He then decreed that the French state would help find and kill the Beast.
The killing of the creature that eventually marked the end of the attacks is credited to a local hunter named Jean Chastel, who shot it at the slopes of Mont Mouchet, now called la Sogne d’Auvers, during a hunt organized by a local nobleman, the Marquis d’Apchier, on June 19, 1767.

The beast of Gévaudan
I’m going to talk about an animal eating humans. If you’re not comfortable with that, bye, have a good day. And a cookie
The beast of Gevauden went on it’s rampage during 1764 and 1767 in France. It is not clear how many people the beast killed or ate. But a study from 1987 estimates that it attacked around 160 people. 110 deaths and 50 injuries. The victims were often killed by having their throats ripped out
The beast’s first reported kill was a 14 year old girl named Jeanne Boulet. She was herding a group of sheep when she was attacked by the animal. Almost a month later a 15 year old girl was attacked. She was deadly wounded and passed away a while later. But with her last breath she described what attacked her as ‘a horrible beast’. Which it probably was considering the fact it killed already two people by that time. Well actually three. The people connected the dots and realised that the son of Yole, also herding a flock of sheep, had been killed in 1762. The only thing remaining from the boy was his partially eaten body.
There was also a girl who survived the attack. Again she was herding sheep. They made a protective circle around her, saving her life in the end.
In the following months the animal was known as the beast of Gévaudan. It got so bad that the authorities even asked for military assistance. Jean-baptise organised the hunt, which he said, had around 30 000 men.
The beast was spotted and got shit but escaped back into the forest. It seemed unharmed by the bullets.

Translation of the caption:
“Picture of the monster desolating the Gévaudan, This Beast is the size of a young Bull, it likes to attack Women and Children, it drinks their Blood, cuts off their Heads, and carries them off.”
(Picture and translation from : https://publicdomainreview.org/collection/the-beast-of-gevaudan-1764-1767/ )
Of course the love of the beast had to come to an end. It was shot by François Antoine which was them stuffed and put on display in Versailles.
I’m reality the beast was probably just a very big wolf or other canid. But no one knows for sure.

Have a great day and watch out for the beast. For it might still be at it’s original home

The Life Of Jeanne Boulet
  Jeanne Boulet awoke irritably at sunrise. It was a chilly June morning in Gévaudon and she needed to go out and tend the sheep. She groaned inwardly. Soon, very soon, she would be courted by handsome men and married off and she would never again need to spend her days out in the fields warding off wolves with a stick.
  “I am fourteen,” she told herself as she got dressed for the day. “Girls have been married younger than that.” The young woman looked at herself in a dirty piece of mirror. She gently poked her face, her round cheeks and bright eyes were very fetching and pleasing to see. “So why,” she wondered. “Has no man shown interest?”
  She was disheartened. A pretty lady shouldn’t be out watching sheep all day, every day! She should be in town, catching the eye of strong young men that want families and home-cooked meals. Poor Jeanne Boulet sighed, tying back her long brown hair. Perhaps she could convince her parents that Claude was old enough now to take her place. His ninth birthday was in October, that was close enough.
  Gévaudon was a quiet place, apart from the occasional mauling that was fairly commonplace in rural France. An expected fact of life; death, swift and sudden. But the sheep were precious, they fed and clothed the lucky few who survived the wars, the beasts, the sicknesses and those yet unaffected by the ravages of time. One way or another, death would come. Death was consistent.
  Poor Jeanne Boulet knew all about the inevitability of death; she’d watched it claim her younger sister. Death came in the form of illness without cure, and it ate up her sister from the inside, hollowing her out, whittling her down to naught but bones with cheesecloth skin holding them together. Jeanne Boulet had watched little Maria die, held her skeletal hand as God’s angels took her away to be reunited with the Lord. Jeanne had believed then that God took Maria because He missed her up in Heaven. But that was only the first. The longer Jeanne Boulet lived, the more people she knew were reunited with God, the less that thought seemed to comfort her. She began to wonder why God would send people down here at all if He was just going to take them back after a few years. God was being selfish, thinking only about how much He missed these people and not how much their living friends and family would miss those He took back.
  Jeanne Boulet had grown to dislike this aspect of God. He had taken many of her friends and siblings away, too, as well as her grandparents. She wasn’t so mad about her grandparents. By the time death came for them, they were too old to work; they just ate and slept and took up space. God did them and her family a favor, saving them from prolonged suffering, probably as an apology for what Maria went through a few years prior. Jeanne still loved God; she prayed to Him and spoke to Him often when out alone in the fields. She simply didn’t agree with him on a few things, which was fine. She had noticed that blind, mindless faith was like a pumpkin left on the vine; eventually it will rot and crack and the innards will spill out to be eaten or buried by animals. Stagnation led to death. That’s why God gave them challenges, to save them from wretched stagnation.
  “He’s challenging me now,” Jeanne Boulet muttered to herself, staring out at the sheep as they grazed peacefully. “Testing my patience. Well, I’m patient enough. You can stop it.” She smiled to herself. Maybe God would reward her unyielding tenacity with a loving, handsome husband! One that would carry her away from Gévaudon and sheep and long lonely days filled with dread.
  “Do You ever get lonely, Lord?” she inquired, waiting on an answer that never came. “I would think so. You’re unique, peerless. It must be hard, being the only one. Nobody to relate to.” She nodded. “I know what that’s like. I’m lonely, too. But at least I have You.” She looked up into the sky, observing the big flock of fluffy sheep wandering across the blue prairie above her head. She felt a comforting warmth in her bosom at the thought. God was always there, listening and watching. Even if she never found a husband, at least she had the company of God. The idea made her rather happy. God was without death, He was eternal, the one constant in life anyone could turn to for positivity, for love, for comfort. During the worst times; times of war, famine, disease and suffering… He was always there.
  Jeanne Boulet’s mind wandered by memories of her grandfather. He was always quick to blame misfortune on the Almighty. Everything that went wrong in life was God’s fault, but the little miracles and successes were never equally owed to that same all-powerful deity. Bon-papa never praised or cherished God’s gifts. He was bitter and angry and chose instead to blame all of his problems on a higher power, never taking accountability upon himself.
  Grand-mére was different. She chose to see the suffering and hardships of life as gifts in their own right. Jeanne could remember her words; “Everything we go through, every blessing and every hurtle is a gift from God that we must cherish. These things shape us, mold us, make us who we are. For better or worse, good or bad, we are the sum of our experiences and every one of those experiences are because of God.” Grand-mére was ancient and wise, if not a burden on the family in her final days, though she was remembered with great fondness.
 Poor Jeanne Boulet saw a sheep had wandered off a bit and she quickly went to bring it back to the bulk of the flock. She sighed, stroking the animal’s thick, warm wool. The animal bayed quietly, walking deep into the billowing fold of it’s fellows. Jeanne found herself longing for a husband again. She wanted a family of her own, she wanted to have a few babies, live in a nice town, in a warm, red-brick house; far from sheep and this solitary life.
  “Am I asking too much?” Jeanne inquired. “I’ll be happy to be married before I turn sixteen. That’s how old Maman was when she married Papa. Maman and Papa are much older now and they had seven children. But it’s just me and Claude left. If I have any hope of having my own children, I must start soon. Please, God, let me have children. I’ll keep tending sheep, I’ll even work in the fields if it means I can have my own family.”
  Bargaining with God; how silly! Jeanne shook her head. No one ever got anywhere that way. She just needed to trust in Him, in His plan for her. But what if what God wanted for her wasn’t what she wanted? How could she just trust that His silent intentions were best for her? She wanted so much to believe as her grandmother had; with her entire heart. But what about asking questions? Jeanne Boulet was young and curious. She naturally had many, many questions that brewed inside her, whirling around in a quizzical tornado, wrecking havoc on her heart.
  “If only You would talk to me,” she said, upturning her eyes once again to the sky, searching for any little sign of… anything. She sighed, sitting down on the freshly-chewed grass. She lay her staff down across her lap, absently picking at a loose fiber of wood she spotted there.
  One of the sheep looked up, it’s ears twitching nervously. Two more ewes joined the first, their rectangular pupils dilating as they looked around. Jeanne Boulet was busy picking at the wood staff, thinking about what kind of husband she might someday have, about God’s possible intentions for her life, and whether or not God controlled every little detail of everyone’s lives.
  More and more sheep ceased their grazing, their bodies tensing under their woolen coats. Poor Jeanne Boulet was far too deep in thought to notice the warning signs, not before it was terminally too late.
  The sheep began baying and bleating frantically, stomping and prancing, bumping into each other and then Jeanne. The young woman shot to her feet, looking around the field at the panicking animals, clutching her only means of defense tightly in her hands. The sheep split apart, moving and flowing over the ground like water, revealing just what had upset them.
  Poor, poor Jeanne Boulet. She stood there, alone in the quickly emptying field, faced with something that she couldn’t quite comprehend.
  It was so large. Jeanne had seen wolves before, but this was much bigger than a wolf. The creature in question was the size of a cow, lean in frame with a broad chest. It snarled at her with a wide mouth set in a flattened snout, flashing two-dozen vicious bone-daggers at the fourteen-year-old girl. It shook a dog-like head, the foreign face and pointed ears directed, focused on the unfortunate Jeanne. She noticed the color of the fur; tawny with a black stripe that ran the length of the beast’s spine. A strange color for a wolf.
  Jeanne swung the stick at the enormous monster as it approached, it’s unusually long tail swayed back and forth, a little tuft on the end like some mocking decoration. She shouted at it, swinging the stick again. She stepped back, her foot hit a stone and her body tumbled backward to the ground. She saw the beast leap towards her, revealing a soft white stomach just before it pounced.
  Poor Jeanne Boulet felt the full weight of the cow-sized creature hit her, the many sharp teeth closed around her slender neck. As the needly points sank into her flesh, she wondered if God was still there with her. Was he watching? She felt a very sharp pain, a pull at her throat, then she was staring up at the bloody maw of the monster.
  She felt cold.
  She tried to speak, to apologize to God for being mad at him. But Jeanne Boulet’s throat was gone, swallowed up by the anomalous creature. She was scared, yes, but not alone.
  God was there with her, as He always had been and forever would remain. He was always there when they needed Him, always.
  Jeanne Boulet closed her eyes.

— Hayo capitaine ! » me répondirent mes moussaillons.
« Joseph ! » me réclamait-elle.
« Beurk ! Dégueu ! » m’exclamai-je en me réfugiant vers la vitre.
Ses lèvres étaient toutes molles et roses… C’était horrible… Affreux…

Beast of Gévaudan
Prologue: You Are Not Alone
???
“Tell me, little bird, what hunts in these woods? Wolves?”
“Always.”
“Men with their guns?”
“Of course.”
“Tell me, little bird, what hunts in these woods and yet leaves behind nothing?”
”Monsters.”
Jeanne Boulet was a very diligent young woman. The fourteen-year-old shepherdess guided her flock with a keen eye, ensuring that not a lamb nor ewe went off the path as they headed to the pasture. She tapped a wandering lamb on its hindquarters with her crook, herding it back to the safety of the flock. It bleated as it scampered off to its mother.
It was a warm day in June, the last day before the month turned to July. The hills of the Vivarais were lush and green, the ground sodden with moisture and sticky underfoot. The air was humid as well, creating a stifling weight in the summer heat. Thankfully, the oppressive feeling grew lighter the higher she climbed, the altitude of the hills cooling things off.
Jeanne gently nudged her flock over a rocky outcropping, the sheep bleating in protest at the uneven terrain. She herself nearly fell victim to the treacherous slopes, stumbling as she lost her footing on loose stones, but in time they were all safe on the other side.
She knew these hills like the back of her hand. She had come many times both alone and with her mother. She knew every twisting stream good for water and every place for safe grazing, every stony field that shifted underfoot and every jagged cliff that boded a terrible fall. Despite this, it was with no small measure of relief that she at last led the flock to their pasture for the day. The young teen took a seat on a nearby stone to take some weight off her aching feet as the sheep spread out into the fields to graze with wild abandon. The trek was no easier on them, and at least she had the option of eating as she walked.
After she felt more rested, she eventually got up to patrol the pasture, gently but firmly nudging any straying members of her flock back into the fold with her crook. The day was calm and restful, the rising sun burning away the humidity that lingered despite the altitude, leaving the area pleasantly warm but without its previous weight. Jeanne took a deep breath as she gnawed on a morsel of rye bread, swallowing contentedly as she kept her watch.
One of the lambs stumbled up to her, bleating entreatingly for a piece of her food. She ushered it back to its mother, tapping it firmly on the rear when it kept up its attempts. A few more taps and it conceded defeat, scurrying back to the others. She almost choked on a laugh as the little thing stumbled in its haste, righting itself before crashing into its mothers flank. Troublesome little things. She took another bite. Troublesome, but cute.
She whiled away the day in the company of her flock. It was an isolating experience, to be so far from help, so far from the presence of other people, to be the only one for miles, but it was not altogether an unpleasant one. On days like today, it could even be called peaceful.
Such a shame, then, that she was not alone.
Neither Jeanne nor the flock noticed the presence creeping up behind her. Or rather, the flock noticed, but upon seeing it to only be a man, cared little. After all, he was hardly as fearsome as a wolf, and to a sheep, a wolf was the only danger that mattered.
To Jeanne, whose startled and frightened cry was muffled by the hand that clapped over her mouth, there were things far more dangerous than wolves that lurked in the shadows.
A piercing scream suddenly echoed throughout the hills of the Vivarais before it was cruelly silenced.
~~~
It was Jeanne’s mother who came to fetch the flock when her daughter failed to return. The sheep looked up at her approach, but went back to their meals when they saw who it was. She called out into the field, searching desperately for her lost child.
“Jeanne!”
There was no reply. She hiked up her skirts as she ran around the edge of the pasture, bravely calling into the woods in the hope of a response. Her voice cracked from the strain of the calls.
“Jeanne!”
Her mother stopped short, seeing an abandoned pack laying on the ground. It was next to a splatter of blood on the grass, the humidity of the summer air keeping it wet. A lonely shepherd’s crook lay only a few feet away.
“Jeanne…?”
The flock continued to graze.
Beast of Gévaudan
The Beast of Gévaudan committed its first recorded attack in the early summer of 1764. A young woman named Marie Jeanne Valet, who was tending cattle in the Mercoire forest near the town of Langogne in the eastern part of Gévaudan, saw a beast "like a wolf, yet not a wolf" come at her. However, the bulls in the herd charged the beast, keeping it at bay. They then drove it off after it attacked a second time. Shortly afterward the first official victim of the beast was recorded: 14-year-old Jeanne Boulet was killed near the village of Les Hubacs near Langogne.
Throughout the remainder of 1764, more attacks were reported across the region. Very soon terror gripped the populace because the beast was repeatedly preying on lone men, women, and children as they tended livestock in the forests around Gévaudan. Reports note that the Beast seemed only to target the victim's head or neck regions.
By late December 1764, rumors had begun circulating that there might be a pair of animals behind the killings. This was because there had been such a high number of attacks in such a short space of time and because many of the attacks appeared to have occurred or were reported nearly simultaneously. Some contemporary accounts suggest the creature was seen with another such animal, while others report that the beast was accompanied by its young.
On January 12, 1765, Jacques Portefaix and seven friends were attacked by the beast. After several attacks, they drove it away by staying grouped together. The encounter eventually came to the attention of Louis XV, who awarded 300 livres to Portefaix and another 350 livres to be shared among his companions. The king also rewarded Portefaix with an education at the state's expense. He then decreed that the French state would help find and kill the beast.
Historical and cultural references in 𝒱𝒶𝓃𝒾𝓉𝒶𝓈 𝓃𝑜 𝒞𝒶𝓇𝓉𝑒
Tumblr media
⋗ 𝐼𝓃𝓉𝓇𝑜𝒹𝓊𝒸𝓉𝒾𝑜𝓃  Vanitas no Carte is a manga by Jun Mochizuki set in a steampunk 19th century Paris. The history follows Noé, a vampire, and Vanitas, an ordinary human, as the two of them solve cases centered on cursed vampires. The history has a lot of real-world and cultural inspirations. My intention here is to list some of those as they appear throughout the narrative. If you notice that something is missing, just let me know! Thank you in advance for reading this. Observation: I’m still writing this.
⋗ 𝒜𝓋𝑒𝓇𝑜𝒾𝑔𝓃𝑒 The place where Noé says he comes from is actually a fictional province located in the southern half of France. Being the set of the book "A Rendezvous in Averoigne", by Clark Smith, Averoigne is described as "the most witch-ridden in the entire country.
Tumblr media
⋗ 𝐸𝑔𝓁𝒶𝓃𝓉𝒾𝓃𝑒 This is more of a trivia than a reference, but Amelia's malnomen, Eglantine, is the French name of the Briar Rose (Rosa rubiginosa). I didn't find its meaning in the language of flowers, but the word seems to originate from Latin "aculeus", meaning "spine, prickle". This is clearly made evident by the thorns in the visual representation of the malnomen. Besides that, Eglantine being a flower also links with Amelia's real name and general motif of flowers (lol).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
⋗ 𝒱𝒶𝓃𝒾𝓉𝒶𝓈 Vanitas comes from Latin, meaning “vanity” or "futility". It's also the name of a genre of paintings that tries to represent, through objects, the inevitability of death and the transience and vanity of earthly achievements and pleasures. I believe that one of the links that we could make with our Vanitas is the fact that we know that he will die since the first chapter. Furthermore, vanity is an adjective that, in general, suits the character.
⋗ 𝒞𝑜𝓊𝓃𝓉 𝒪𝓇𝓁𝑜𝓀
Count Orlok is the main antagonist of the 1922 horror film "Nosferatu", loosely based on "Count Dracula". This movie is very important for the vampire media since it was responsible for establishing the idea that vampires can be killed by sunlight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
⋗ 𝒯𝒽𝑒 𝐵𝓁𝓊𝑒 𝑀𝑜𝑜𝓃 The term is often used for two different sorts of moons: second of two full moons in a calendar month, or third of four full moons in a single season.  Actual blue-colored moons are rare and happen when Earth’s atmosphere contains dust or smoke that scatter red light. When these particles are present in our air, and the moon shines through them, the moon may appear blue in color. The most common occurrences of this phenomenon were after volcanic eruptions.
⋗ 𝒥𝑒𝒶𝓃𝓃𝑒
At first, Jeanne's name seems to be a reference to Jeanne d'Arc. She led the French army during the Hundred Years' War. However, she was capture and burned to death by the English and their French collaborators as a heretic. Thus, Vnc's Jeanne's alias, The Hellfire Witch, is probably an allusion to the tragic death of Jeanne D'Arc. Furthermore, the option for the name Jeanne may also have been because of the real case of the Beast of Gevaudán. The first recorded fatal attack of the Beast occurred on June 30, 1764, when a 14-year-old shepherdess, Jeanne Boulet, was attacked by the animal. Jeanne was also the name of Marie-Jeanne Valet, who crossed paths with the Beast on August 11, 1765. Armed with a bayonet affixed to a pole, Valet impaled the Beast’s chest. Valet became known as the “Amazon” and the “Maid of Gévaudan.”. Today, she has a statue in her honor in France.
La bête du gévaudan
Between 1765 and 1767, an unknown creature killed over 100 people in a rural region of France and captivated a horrified world
many French at the time presumed the Beast to be a wolf and many modern scholars agree, some have suggested that the Beast may not have been a wolf at all.
The first recorded fatal attack of the Beast occurred on June 1764 when a 14 year old shepherdess, Jeanne Boulet, tended a flock of sheep. Boulet was not the creature’s first victim. As it said by a historian , about two months prior, a young woman tending cattle was attacked by a creature “like a wolf, yet not a wolf” but escaped because the herd defended her
The attacks continued through the summer and autumn, It partially ate women and the young, according to the reports, lone adult men were also targets. There were so many attacks that some speculated there were in fact two or more beasts.
The terrified populace of Gévaudan did not sit idle and individual stories of bravery captivated the public. As bounties were offered and hunters combed the countryside looking for the creature.
On October 1764
Hours safter a mauling, the Beast was seen at Chateau de la Baume, stalking a herdsman. Hunters followed the animal into the woods and shot the creature but after a fall, the Beast rose and ran off
And for children's
They prompted the court of King Louis XV to send royal hunters to destroy the Beast. There was a 6,000 livre bounty on the creature’s head. The story of the Beast, meanwhile, was spreading and covered in newspapers from Boston to Brussels, becoming one of history’s first media sensations
Now the story of how the king’s men were nearly shown up by a girl
Marie-Jeanne Valet
 she described the Beast as looking like an unusually large dog. According to the account, she was crossing between branches of a river through a small wooded area when she turned to discover the beast immediately behind her. As it reared up for an attack, the young woman plunged a homemade spear she had been carrying into its chest. Injured but not dead, the beast raised a paw to the injury, crying out loudly, and then rolled off into the waters of the river.
The beast was finally slain in 1767 by a local farmer, ending the reign of terror.
Historians, scientists, and conspiracy theorists have all proposed theories about what the Beast was. Among the suspects: a Eurasian wolf, an armored war dog, a striped hyena, a lion, some kind of prehistoric predator, a werewolf, a dog-wolf hybrid and a human.
Of the candidates the most fanciful is the werewolf. Which points out that marie purportedly used a silver
spear to slay the wolf, thereby feeding into werewolf mythology
Among all that, There is a magnificent statue created by artist Philippe Kaeppelin memorializes the bravery of young Marie-Jeanne
AndThere are also sculptures of the beast , and a monument to the beast slayer, in La Bresseyre-Saint-Mar
Jean-Baptiste Bessières & Marie-Jeanne Lapeyrière
“Nous venons d’évoquer une série de ménages formés de hauts militaires et de jeunes filles de la société parisienne, mariages inspirés directement ou formellement encouragés par Napoléon. Il arriva aussi que des favoris du Premier Consul se marièrent tout à fait selon leur coeur et sans que le pouvoir intervînt le moins du monde dans ce grand acte de la vie privée. C’est le cas de Bessières qui épousa une jeune fille de son pays, un peu sa parente, à laquelle il avait voué dès l’enfance une tendre amitié. Sans doute, Bonaparte et plusieurs membres de sa famille signèrent-ils au contrat apporté à Paris dans ce but, pour bien marquer que cette union était approuvée à la cour consulaire, mais le mariage de Bessières resta une affaire tout à fait personnelle.
C’est en revenant à Prayssac, après la campagne d’Egypte, que le général avait retrouvé sa cousine Marie-Jeanne Lapeyrière, alors dans toute la fraîcheur de ses dix-neuf ans. Elle était de bonne famille, quoique peu fortunée. Son père, homme de loi, semble avoir été d’un niveau social légèrement supérieur à celui du père de Bessières, mais la réussite militaire du prétendant modifiait à son profit la différence. Après un an de fiançailles, les noces furent célébrées au château de Canussel, propriété des Lapeyrière; de part et d’autre, on tint à recevoir la bénédiction d’un prêtre insermenté, acte encore délictueux à l’époque. Ce détail peint assez bien les jeunes époux, tous deux gens de devoir fortement attachés à leurs traditions et capables de braver la loi du jour pour satisfaire leur conscience.
A son arrivée à Paris, Madame Bessières, qui n’était pas seulement “bonne, douce et pieuse”, mais encore belle et parfaitement élevée, fut accueillie très cordialement par la société déjà frivole qui se reformait autour de la famille du Premier Consul. Les Parisiennes effrontées qui avaient cru pouvoir brocarder cette provinciale s’aperçurent vite que sa timidité n’était pas de la sottise et qu’une grande fermeté de caractère se cachait sous ses traits de madone rougissante. Elle prit bientôt de l’assurance, et comme sa beauté croissait en proportion de son esprit, elle ne tarda pas à figurer brillamment dans le monde.
Contrairement à beaucoup d’autres, la femme de Bessières eut toujours en face de Napoléon une aisance, un sang-froid, une indépendance d’esprit qui provoquaient la surprise et forçaient l’estime. Peu après son mariage, elle fut dénoncée par la police pour avoir assisté, en grand deuil, à une messe célébrée clandestinement à la mémoire de Louis XVI. Bonaparte, à qui cet acte de piété était présenté comme l’indice d’un complot, eut un premier mouvement de colère et fit une scène violente à Bessières, qui conseilla à la coupable de ne pas reparaître aux Tuileries de quelque temps. Mieux renseigné par la suite, le Premier Consul le pria lui même de ramener “la charmante boudeuse” qu’il honora d’un accueil réparateur. “Madame, lui dit-il, je regrette de vous avoir fait adresser des reproches par votre mari. J’ai su depuis que le hasard seul vous avait fait assister à un service pour Louis XVI. Général, répondit Madame Bessières d’un ton assuré, Louis XVI ne méritait pas son sort. Il fut la victime des fureurs d’un peuple égaré. J’ai voulu prier pour lui, et, si j’étais à votre place, je sais bien ce que je ferais. - Eh! que feriez-vous, Madame ? - Je ne permettrais pas qu’en France on fût obligé de prier Dieu dans les maisons particulières.” A ce moment, Bonaparte mûrissait dans le secret son projet de rétablissement du culte. La réponse de la générale s’accordait à merveille avec ses préoccupations.  Après quelques instants de silence, il conclut: “Vous avez raison, Madame, et avant peu de temps, j’exécuterai un projet que j’ai formé.. [...]”
[..]
La mort de Bessières, tué par un boulet le 1er mai 1813, plongea la maréchale dans un profond désespoir, que n’adoucit point la lettre de Napoléon, suivant laquelle le héros avait succombé sans souffrir.[...] La pauvre femme avait des raisons de croire que l’âme du défunt ne s’était pas envolée pure de tout péché. En inventoriant les papiers laissés par son mari, elle avait découvert les preuves d’une infidélité qui aviva cruellement sa douleur. Bessières, si honnête, si bon époux qu’il fût, avait eu la faiblesse de la tromper avec une danseuse de l’Opéra [...]
On a prétendu, sans en apporter la preuve, que le maréchal Bessières avait dépensé pour cette fille des sommes énormes et que c’était là la cause du dénuement dans lequel il laissait sa veuve. Quoi qu’il en soit, Napoléon se substitua à lui, comme il l’avait promis, paya ses dettes et pourvut à l’éducation de ses enfants. En 1815, l’Empereur d’Autriche assura à la duchesse d’Istrie une rente de 20000 francs, en compensation de la perte de sa dotation, assise sur des domaines que les traités rendaient à la monarchie des Habsbourg. Les Bourbons et la royauté de Juillet eurent également des égards pour la femme malheureuse d’un des plus indiscutables héros de l’épopée française. Elle mourut au seuil de la vieillesse, le 4 juin 1840, ayant sous les yeux la montre de son mari, arrêtée depuis vingt-sept ans par le choc du boulet qui avait emporté le maréchal.”
Louis Chardigny, Les Maréchaux de Napoléon, Bibliothèque Napoléonienne, P. 216-220.
Tumblr media
“We have just mentioned a series of households made up of senior soldiers and young girls from Parisian society, marriages directly inspired or formally supported by Napoleon. It also happened that the favorites of the First Consul married completely according to their heart and without any intervention from the powerful in this great act of the private life. This is the case of Bessières, who married a young girl from his country, somewhat his relative, to whom he had devoted a tender friendship from childhood. Doubtless Bonaparte and several members of his family signed the contract brought to Paris for this purpose, to make it clear that this union was approved at the consular court, but Bessières' marriage remained a completely personal affair.
It was while returning to Prayssac, after the Egyptian campaign, that the general had found his cousin Marie-Jeanne Lapeyrière, then in all the bloom of her nineteen years. She was from a good family, although not very wealthy. Her father, a lawyer, seems to have been on a slightly higher social level than that of Bessières' father, but the pretender's military success changed the difference to his advantage. After a year of engagement, the wedding was celebrated at the Château de Canussel, property of the Lapeyrière family; on both sides, they insisted on receiving the blessing of a non-juring priest, an act that was still criminal at the time. This detail fairly well portrays the young spouses, both people of duty strongly attached to their traditions and capable of defying the law of the day to satisfy their conscience.
On her arrival in Paris, Madame Bessières, who was not only "good, sweet and pious", but also beautiful and perfectly raised, was warmly welcomed by the already frivolous society which was reforming around the family of the First Consul. The cheeky Parisians who believed they could make fun of this provincial quickly realized that her shyness was not foolishness and that a great firmness of character was hidden under her features of blushing madonna. She soon gained confidence, and as her beauty grew in proportion to her spirit, she soon became a brilliant figure in the world.
Unlike many others, Bessières' wife always had to Napoleon's face an ease, a composure, an independence of mind which caused surprise and forced esteem. Shortly after her marriage, she was reported by the police for having attended, in great mourning, a mass clandestinely celebrated in memory of Louis XVI. Bonaparte, to whom this act of piety was presented as the evidence of a conspiracy, had a first movement of anger and made a violent scene to Bessières, who advised the culprit not to reappear at the Tuileries for some time. Better informed later, the First Consul himself asked him to bring back "the charming sulker" whom he honored with a conciliatory welcome. “Madame,” he told her, “I regret having made your husband reprimand you. I have since known that chance alone made you attend a service for Louis XVI. General, confidently replied Madame Bessières, Louis XVI did not deserve his fate. He was the victim of the fury of a disoriented people. I wanted to pray for him, and, if I were in your place, I know what I would do. - Eh! what would you do, Madame? - I would not allow that in France we had to pray to God in private houses. " At this time, Bonaparte was secretly maturing his plan to re-establish religious cult. The generale’s response was perfectly aligned with his concerns. After a few moments of silence, he concludes: "You are right, Madame, and before a short time, I will execute a project that I have formed [...]"
[..]
Bessières' death, killed by a cannonball on May 1, 1813, plunged the maréchale in a deep despair, which was not softened by Napoleon's letter, according to which the hero had succumbed without suffering. [...] The poor woman had reason to believe that the soul of the deceased had not departed pure from all sin. By inventorying the papers left by her husband, she had discovered evidence of an infidelity which cruelly exacerbated her pain. Bessières, so honest, good husband as he was, had the weakness to cheat on her with an Opera dancer [...]
It has been claimed, without any proof, that Marshal Bessières had spent enormous sums on this girl and that this was the cause of the destitution in which he left his widow. Be that as it may, Napoleon acted his part, as he had promised, paid his debts and provided for the education of his children. In 1815, the Emperor of Austria assured the Duchess of Istria a pension of 20,000 francs, in compensation for the loss of her endowment, based on estates the treaties returned to the Habsburg monarchy. The Bourbons and the royalty of July also had regard for the unfortunate wife of one of the most indisputable hero of the French epic. She died on the threshold of old age on June 4, 1840, having before her eyes her husband's watch, arrested for twenty-seven years by the shock of the cannonball which had taken the marshal away. ”
Beast of Gevaudan: France’s Werewolf
Tumblr media
In 1764 it took its first victim. Jeanne Boulet was murdered while she watched her sheep, throat torn out and left to be found by her town. This would start an age of terror for Gevaudan, one that would curse the remote French town for years to come.
Gevaudan was a small country town located in what is now Lozere, remote as it was stories still reached the capital. People on the edge of their seats as the story unfolded.
The first attack against the beast was organized in 1964 by Étienne Lafont and Captain Jean Baptiste Duhamel with up to 30, 000 volunteers. Dunhamel treated the attack like a military one, he left poison bait and even dressed up some men as peasant women. But this would not be the end of the beast.
Stories began to spread through France of survivors, sensationalizing that they lived because of their virtues. Everything from children fighting the beast with pikes to a woman wounding the beast was spread.
It's reign of terror would end at the hands of Jean Chastel in June of 1767. With a silver bullet the beast was slain, ending its hunt just as quickly as it had begun in 1764. When the creature’s gut was opened it was described as having the remains of its last victim in its stomach. After it was stuffed, a cruel reminder to what had taken so many lives.
There is much dispute over what really attacked Gevaudan. Non-believers chalk it up to a herd of large wolves hunting small villages that could not defend itself. With no concrete evidence it remains a mystery, potentially to resurface to bring terror once more.
Un soir de vengeance
Depuis plusieurs centaines d’années, il existe une légende dans une région qui ne veut pas qu’on l’apprenne car elle concerne de nombreuses familles de notre beau pays. L’histoire commença à la fin du Moyen Age ; l’anglais avait été bouté hors de France à coup de pieds au cul et surtout à coup de lance dans la gueule. A ce moment, la paix revint et comme toujours, l’homme chercha de nouveaux ennemis. Jeanne était une belle jeune bergère. Sa famille vivait recluse près d’une forêt à l’extérieur du village. Elle était appréciée de tout le monde. D’ailleurs, sa présence était à chaque fois, un rayon de soleil dans le cœur des villageois. Elle sentait bon les fleurs de champ et son sourire réchauffait les âmes en peine. Seulement, Jeanne était fille de sorcière, ou plutôt de guérisseuse utilisant la magie blanche afin de soigner les cors au pied. Sa mère fut souvent appelée pour travailler comme sage-femme. On venait aussi la voir afin de soigner des maux de femmes. Alors, Jeanne connaissait aussi quelques remèdes ou potions qui pouvaient guérir ou empoisonner en fonction de son utilisation.
Bref, elle avait la vie devant elle, s’il n’y avait pas eu cette malheureuse journée. Elle surveillait un troupeau de brebis dans la plaine quand quelques garçons passèrent rentrant dans le village. En voyant la jeune fille, ils décidèrent de la saluer. Jeanne était heureuse de voir quelqu’un. Seulement, les jeunes hommes ayant bu plus que de coutume, réalisèrent que les formes physiques de la bergère étaient plus rondes et plus appétissantes que d’habitude. Ils la serrèrent d’un peu trop prêt malgré ses cris étouffés. Elle se débâtit tant et si bien que l’un d’eux la frappa pour la calmer. Dès lors, elle ne put que supporter leur poids sur son corps dénudé, résignée à accepter leur chaleur entre ses cuisses. Elle tourna la tête et regarda son sang sortir de son nez pour couler sur la terre. Puis, les quatre chenapans ayant fini leur ouvrage, l’insultèrent et pissèrent sur son corps afin de mieux l’humilier : L’alcool associé à l’effet de groupe a toujours montré le vrai visage des cons !
Dans la soirée, en découvrant l’état de leur fille, les parents de Jeanne vinrent se plaindre des violences commises auprès de la sénéchaussée. Quelques gens d’armes arrivèrent pour enquêter. Les braves garçons accusés avouèrent le viol mais pour échapper à la torture, ils accusèrent Jeanne de les avoir envoutés. Dès lors, les ragots se propagèrent très vite. La petite famille sympathique ne vivait pas à l’écart pour rien car elle communiait avec le diable. La nuit, Jeanne et sa mère participaient à des sabbats durant lesquels elles s’offraient aux démons. Même le père fut traité de sodomite. La police questionna tout le monde et sous l’influence des notables du village, il était évident que les rumeurs étaient vraies. Jeanne ainsi que ses parents furent arrêtés et sous la question, ils avouèrent les rites sataniques, l’inceste, la sodomie, les coliques, les entorses, et les mensonges des femmes envers leur mari. Ils furent tous les trois condamnés à brûler vif près de leur maison qui, elle aussi, fut réduite en cendre. Mais avant cela, Jeanne se souvint de son sang coulant le long de ses jambes et de son nez, tachant le sol. Alors, elle hurla une malédiction aux villageois, les maudissant eux et leurs générations futures. Les filles devront déposer leur premier sang à l’endroit où elle fut violée, sinon elle viendrait détruire le jour de leur mariage !
Pendant longtemps, les familles inculquèrent à leurs enfants de respecter la malédiction en la transformant en tradition. Par contre l’épisode de Jeanne fut vite oubliée. Chaque fille partait le soir déposer leur première règle ou enterrer le vêtement que leur sang avait taché. Mais, Marlène refusa de suivre une tradition absurde et grotesque. Elle profita de la vie à sa façon, s’amusant comme fait une adolescente en conflit avec ses parents et la société. Par la suite, Marlène se rangea puis rencontra Renan, un jeune homme installé récemment dans la petite ville surplombant l’ancien village devenu un quartier. Ils s’aimèrent, partagèrent un appartement et décidèrent de se marier. Marlène fut la plus heureuse des femmes. Elle était déjà belle mais dans sa robe blanche, elle était superbe. La cérémonie se passa bien, de même les familles et les amis s’amusèrent durant le repas de fête qui dura toute la soirée. Le couple décida de profiter de quelques minutes pour s’enlacer et s’aimer en tant que mari et femme.
Personne ne s’occupa d’eux, continuant à danser ou chanter quand tout à coup, un hurlement terrible surgit d’une fenêtre ouverte. Une cousine éloignée, partie fumer en cachette fut la première à la voir. Marlène entra dans l’immeuble, trainant derrière elle un corps tel un boulet attaché à une chaine. Elle respirait mal, soufflant sifflant fortement. Elle passa devant une de ses copines tétanisée qui s’évanouit juste après. Marlène monta les escaliers péniblement. Le cadavre de Renan suivait derrière elle ; il laissait sur le sol une trainée de sang qu’on pouvait suivre à la trace comme de la bave d’escargot. Elle semblait sale, le visage marqué par une coulée brune de sang qui sortait de sa bouche. La peau paraissait vieillie presque pourrie. Sa robe était déchirée en plusieurs endroit ajoutant un aspect de mort-vivant à son apparence et sa démarche. Elle terrorisa les invités venus voir sur le palier ce qui se passait car ses doigts étaient devenus de longues pointes aussi acérées que tranchantes. Elle-même ne comprenait pas sa mutation. Malgré les yeux révulsés, elle avança en direction de sa famille. Elle ne prononça aucun mot, respirant mal et fort. Elle montra du doigt une petite fille assise puis partit se réfugier au fond de la nuit.
Parfois, on l’entend marcher et chercher on ne sait quoi à l’orée de la forêt mais personne ne sait dans quel endroit elle trouva refuge. Elle traine toujours derrière elle un cadavre frais. Des historiens pensent qu’elle vit dans une cave abandonnée appartenant à l’ancienne maison de Jeanne. Cependant, la demeure ayant été détruite et l’histoire bannie des livres, il est difficile de savoir à quel endroit la situer. En tous cas, depuis, la tradition continue à être respectée. Chaque nuit, on entend quelques jeunes filles partir déposer leur premier sang sous un arbre dans la plaine. Elles ne veulent pas connaitre le sort de Marlène.
Peu de villes attaquées offrent une aussi grande multiplicité de faits intéressants, qui méritent de passer à la postérité. Nous avons observé, qu’à l’arrivée des brigands, la joie fut générale sur les remparts ; mais cette joie ne fut pas moins vive dans l’intérieur de la ville. Les femmes, naturellement timides, ne voyant plus que les dangers de la Patrie, furent, tout d’un coup, transformées en autant d’héroïnes. Les plus jeunes se diviserent dans les différens postes, et se chargerent de porter des cartouches à nos défenseurs ; celles qui étoient un peu plus âgées s’occuperent à faire des sacs à terre, pour porter sur les remparts ; d’autres préparoient des vivres et des rafraîchissemens. On n’entendit aucune plainte ; aucun signe de frayeur ne se fit remarquer, et ce qui eût, peut-être, étonné l’observateur philosophe, c’est que nos concitoyennes monterent sur les remparts, distribuerent aux soldats, soupe, eau-de-vie, bouillon, etc., au milieu d’une grêle de balles et de boulets, comme si elles eussent été, depuis long-temps, familiarisées avec ces terribles explosions. Une, fut victime de son zèle civique (1), et cet événement, loin d’épouvanter les autres, produisit un effet contraire. « Exterminez, ces gueux là, répondoient-elles aux soldats qui les engagoient [sic] à descendre ; ne vous occupez que de cela, et soyez assurés que nous ne vous laisserons manquer de rien ». En effet, pendant les trente-six heures de combat, elles furent fidelles à leur promesse, et les soldats, dont le courage étoit encore excité par cette conduite vraiment héroïque, se battirent comme des lions, et déjouerent les projets de nos ennemis (2). (1) Renée Tessier, Veuve de Pinard, née et mariée en S. Laud. (2) Nota. Les citoyennes Jeanne Duchesne et Renée Rabouin, couturieres, offroient de la soupe aux soldats, sur le rempart de la porte S. Michel, lorsque deux citoyens, frappés d’un coup mortel, tomberent à leurs pieds ; cependant elles resterent sur le rempart.
Récit historique de ce qui s’est passé à l’attaque d’Angers par les brigands de la Vendée, les 13 et 14 frimaire [an II], d’après l’administration du département de Maine-et-Loire, imprimé par arrêté du 16 frimaire an II, Angers, Imprimerie nationale (chez Mame), an II, p. 7-8.
