Definitely a slower start to the reading year than I was hoping for. January was a bit of slog between a very busy and hectic Christmas followed by getting thrown right into the breech back at work once leave ended. Regardless the first three books of 2023 are down 👍 Januarys reading include Jocko’s Leadership Field Manual which is effectively a condensed and combined version of his two pervious absolute heaters; The classic book on the how influence those around in a positive way with Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People; and finally a summation of the final days of the Afghan conflict threw the eyes of a man who found it for over a decade in many capacities, and did what he could to influence and salvage whatever humanity was to be found in that chapter of history’s tragic close. #bookstagram #2023readingchallenge #januaryreads #jocko #leadershipstrategyandtactics #dalecarnegie #howtowinfriendsandinfluencepeople #elliotackerman #thefifthact (at Village of Port Williams) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoYM9Z_pg7hH8H76h6NmBsSLxYxDL6Ketkl8aI0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Reading Adventures
My first books of 2025!
I finished Amy's Christmas Wish by Seralynn Lewis. I started this one early in December, but just couldn't get through it. I finally skim read the last several chapters and finished it today.
The story follows Amy, a baker who owns a B&B, her brother Bryan and Zeke, a childhood friend of the two. Zeke loses his home and has to go home to Worthy, Texas. He hasn't spoken with Amy or Bryan since their other brother Charlie died while the two were serving in Afghanistan. Zeke blames himself for Charlie's death, as Charlie had a lung condition and refused to go to the doctor for it, despite Zeke's begging. Zeke finally gave up asking and right after that, Charlie died.
Zeke has never told anyone what happened, and he was discharged from the Army with hearing loss.
Amy hears rumors of a new boutique hotel opening in their town soon, and worries the new business will negatively affect her B&B. Once Zeke returns, she renews her friendship with him and begins to fall for him. He holds back, feeling too much guilt over her brother's death and his supposed involvement.
The conflict over the "big secret" was way overstated and unnecessary. Survivor's guilt is a real thing, I understand that, but this was way too much, and Amy's overreaction was stupid. The resolution over the boutique hotel was interesting, but the dropped plot line over the arson of the carriage house bothered me a lot.
I gave it three stars. I didn't really like it.
I read Deadly New Year by Helen Golden all in one sitting. It was quite a short book, and the plot moved quickly. This book details the murder of Jasmine Curslon during the New Year's Eve party Lady Beatrice is holding. Jasmine's sister, boyfriend, and chef are all suspects, as each of them have a motive and opportunity.
I enjoyed this book a lot. I was surprised by how quickly the book flew by. I kept detailed notes of the mystery, trying to solve it before the characters did, but it was solved too quickly, and the murderer just confessed when pressed too hard. So that was disappointing, but I loved the book. I enjoy books and movies set during that weird post-Christmas, New Year week.

And yesss, after few long monthsss, i was able to see how Cath & Jest' story come to an end. It's not your typical happily ever after ending but i couldn't think of a better ending like that.
"Sometimes your heart is the only thing worth listening to."

it's an 8/10 for me.

Book Review: Empower to Transform: Transform to Empower Authors: Niraja Bandi and Arghya Chakraborty Ratings: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5 This book mainly focuses on the topic of women empowerment and the cause and effect of the same. This book is very well researched and filled with factual information. Even in the so-called modern world, there is no relief to some women from the atrocities and the discrimination from the other gender. And we have recently been hearing that since the Covid-19 pandemic the number of domestic violence cases has been increased so much. But the main question that arises from all these is that why do women go through such brutalities? Are women really empowered and are they being treated equally to men? And the authors have taken this very sensitive topic as the main subject for their book. The effort by the authors in explaining the reasons behind such discrimination and monstrosity is really laudable. The book focuses on many such sensitive topics like rape culture, female infanticide and how different countries and religion treats women and female child, what is the role of men in women empowerment and how to empower women and so on. The book is full of facts and statistics but I felt it lacked a bit of emotional touch to it. The language and explanation are simple and lucid that anyone can understand. It was a unique and fresh perspective towards understanding women. Overall it was a good book. #review #bookreview #empowertotransform #womenempowerment #women #nonfiction #nonfictionbooks #januaryreads #Readersofinstagram #readersofig #authorsofig #authorsofinstagram #booksofinstagram #booksofig #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagramfeatures #bookstagramfeaturesonly #instagram #instabooks #instadaily #monday #halfpapyrus #bookishladiesclub #booknookcommunity https://www.instagram.com/p/CKvtOJ4gwRo/?igshid=1449upk3slu12
