Prompt 2 - Limit
@jegulus-microfic January 2, Word count 776
Previous part First part
James couldn’t believe Regulus actually showed up. He’d half expected to be sitting in the Prefect’s bathroom on his own all night, because he would stay just in case Regulus decided to turn up. But here he was bang on time, eyes wide, but here.
“I’ve got towels, and I’ve got swim trunks if you want them,” James told Regulus. He thought talking would help settle Regulus quicker, as right now, he looked as though he might bolt. James lowered himself into the warm water and started swimming a few laps.
When he stopped, Regulus had changed into a pair of swimming trunks James had supplied and was waiting by the edge of the pool. A smile turned the corners of James’s mouth up, and he waited patiently, treading water by the edge of the pool as Regulus summonsed the courage to get into the water.
He sat down on the edge of the pool and let his body slide into the water. James shot forward as Regulus slipped beneath the surface, not realising that the pool was so deep. James wrapped his arms around him and dragged him to the surface. Regulus spluttered as he drew in a breath. He clung to James as though his life depended on it.
Eventually, James felt Regulus’s heartbeat slow and he tried talking to him. “Do you want to continue or was that your limit for the day? It’s okay if it is, we can try again another day,” James reassured him.
“No. No, I want to try,” Regulus said with a determinism which James had never heard from him before.
“Right, so we’re going to start with the most basic technique. The doggy-paddle,”
“Doggy paddle? Really, James, it doesn’t sound very elegant,” Regulus scoffed as he leaned back in James’s arms.
“It might not be the prettiest stroke, but it’ll get you out of trouble while you learn to swim.” Carefully, he pried Regulus’s hands off his shoulders and, after making sure Regulus was securely hanging onto the edge of the bath, he set off. He swam a neat little circle in doggy-paddle. Regulus watched closely, his eyes taking in every movement of James’s body. “Right, your turn,” Regulus paled, but let James gently pull him away from the wall. “Okay, I’m going to support you underneath. All I want you to concentrate on is what your arms and legs are doing,” James tilted Regulus forward and Regulus let out a little squeal which made James nearly drop him, but he recovered and moved his hands so he was supporting Regulus better.
“So what I want you to do is start moving your hands through the water, forwards and backwards,” Regulus did as he was told, his arms stretching forward one at a time and dragging them back through the water. “Brilliant,” James praised him. “Now try and do them at the same time, one after the other and keep going,” Regulus started again, this time his movements looking more like the ones James had demonstrated. “Perfect. You’re doing so well, love. Right now it’s time to add the legs in. I want you to kick your legs in time with your hands,” Regulus started again. It took him a few tries to get the rhythm right, but he was soon doing it effortlessly.
James began to turn with Regulus, letting him get the feeling of moving through the water while paddling. Slowly he began to move his hands away, letting Regulus’s natural buoyancy take over and, before he knew it, Regulus was swimming around James in a tight circle. James lifted his hands above his head, and it took Regulus a second to realise that James’s hands were no longer supporting him. His eyes bugged for a moment before that determinism shone through again, and he paddled faster, leaving a wake behind him.
Finally, exhausted from his exertions, he reached out shakily and James immediately reached for him, pulling him in closer to his body.
“I did it. I actually did it,” Regulus beamed up at him, blinking beads of water out of his eyes.
“You did amazing, love,” James praised him as he bent down and pressed a kiss to his lips. Regulus responded, wriggling closer, wrapping his legs around James’s waist and deepening the kiss. A bang on the door stopped them instantly.
“Oi, you about done in there? It’s been ages,” Someone called from outside.
“Don’t worry, love, I’ve got the cloak,” James whispered in Regulus’s ear.
They got out quickly, towelled off the best they could and threw their clothes on. James ducked under the cloak and Regulus headed towards the door.
