Michelle Dee not entering the Top 5 in Miss Universe 2023 has got to be one of the most disappointing and bewildering moments in the pageant's history—joining the ranks of Janine Tugonon and Janick Maceta not winning in their respective editions.

Honestly. I didn't see anything special with the evening gown presentation of some of the women who entered the Top 5—Puerto Rico and Nicaragua deserves to be there, though.

Let me be clear first that this opinion of mine is not sparked by the deleted post on an Instagram page. I didn't even know then that that particular post existed. From the moment the Top 5 were called and Michelle wasn't there, I knew it was a great injustice. And I have been a pageant fan for as long as I can remember and, under normal circumstances, Michelle should have been a shoo-in to the Top 5.

I mean... hello... longtime Miss Universe runway coach Lu Sierra was also confused. I am not alone in this.

olivia rodrigo never has acknowledged she’s filipino lol her fans are going so hard with the racism allegations when someone calls her white as if she isn’t half while or is considered white 😭

I've already addressed the first point of this ask in a previous post so I won't do it here anymore but anyway...

idk if I can classify Olivia as "white-passing"; she is racially ambiguous though (just as Hailee Steinfeld, Vanessa Hudgens, and Shay Mitchell are). at best, people would know know they're not white, but would mistake them as Latin. and yes, no matter how people twist and turn things, that certainly worked in Olivia's favor. not that she doesn't deserve the success she's getting (she does!), it's just that fans need to acknowledge that she was "allowed" to blow up this much because she doesn't look like the typical Filipina/ Southeast Asian.

which brings me to what ticks me off regarding this discourse: the narrative that it's ridiculous to not know she's not white when, according to some people from america, she looks like the average Filipina.

NO TF SHE DOES NOT.

I swear this is the fault of my country's own standards of beauty. we looooove Eurocentric features here 🙄 more than half of our celebrities are mixed. most of the beauty queens we send to international pageants are mixed. if you want to be popular and admired, you need to be mixed! or at least have East Asian/ Euro features.

so those are the faces that often come to mind (and to google!) when some people think of us.

Olivia Rodrigo belongs to that group. we call them mestizas or halfs. they are Filipinas, of course. but they don't have the features of an average Pinay.

you know Rose from 90 Day Fiance (L)? or Janine Tugonon from Miss Universe 2012 who should've gotten the title over Olivia Culpo btw lol (R)? I would say they are what the average Filipina truly looks like.

this post has become too long, lol. anyway, Olivia still doesn't deserve the shit she's getting but calling her "white-passing" or "racially ambiguous" is hardly racist imho. that is all. love, from a fellow Filipina <3
