A Guide to Historically Accurate Regency-Era Names

I recently received a message from a historical romance writer asking if I knew any good resources for finding historically accurate Regency-era names for their characters.

Not knowing any off the top of my head, I dug around online a bit and found there really isn’t much out there. The vast majority of search results were Buzzfeed-style listicles which range from accurate-adjacent to really, really, really bad.

I did find a few blog posts with fairly decent name lists, but noticed that even these have very little indication as to each name’s relative popularity as those statistical breakdowns really don't exist.

I began writing up a response with this information, but then I (being a research addict who was currently snowed in after a blizzard) thought hey - if there aren’t any good resources out there why not make one myself?

As I lacked any compiled data to work from, I had to do my own data wrangling on this project. Due to this fact, I limited the scope to what I thought would be the most useful for writers who focus on this era, namely - people of a marriageable age living in the wealthiest areas of London.

So with this in mind - I went through period records and compiled the names of 25,000 couples who were married in the City of Westminster (which includes Mayfair, St. James and Hyde Park) between 1804 to 1821.

So let’s see what all that data tells us…

To begin - I think it’s hard for us in the modern world with our wide and varied abundance of first names to conceive of just how POPULAR popular names of the past were.

If you were to take a modern sample of 25-year-old (born in 1998) American women, the most common name would be Emily with 1.35% of the total population. If you were to add the next four most popular names (Hannah, Samantha, Sarah and Ashley) these top five names would bring you to 5.5% of the total population. If you were to do the same survey in Regency London - the most common name would be Mary with 19.2% of the population. Add the next four most popular names (Elizabeth, Ann, Sarah and Jane) and with just 5 names you would have covered 62% of all women.

To hit 62% of the population in the modern survey it would take the top 400 names.

The top five Regency men’s names (John, William, Thomas, James and George) have nearly identical statistics as the women’s names.

I struggled for the better part of a week with how to present my findings, as a big list in alphabetical order really fails to get across the popularity factor and also isn’t the most tumblr-compatible format. And then my YouTube homepage recommended a random video of someone ranking all the books they’d read last year - and so I present…

The Regency Name Popularity Tier List

The Tiers

S+ - 10% of the population or greater. There is no modern equivalent to this level of popularity. 52% of the population had one of these 7 names.

S - 2-10%. There is still no modern equivalent to this level of popularity. Names in this percentage range in the past have included Mary and William in the 1880s and Jennifer in the late 1970s (topped out at 4%).

A - 1-2%. The top five modern names usually fall in this range. Kids with these names would probably include their last initial in class to avoid confusion. (1998 examples: Emily, Sarah, Ashley, Michael, Christopher, Brandon.)

B - .3-1%. Very common names. Would fall in the top 50 modern names. You would most likely know at least 1 person with these names. (1998 examples: Jessica, Megan, Allison, Justin, Ryan, Eric)

C - .17-.3%. Common names. Would fall in the modern top 100. You would probably know someone with these names, or at least know of them. (1998 examples: Chloe, Grace, Vanessa, Sean, Spencer, Seth)

D - .06-.17%. Less common names. In the modern top 250. You may not personally know someone with these names, but you’re aware of them. (1998 examples: Faith, Cassidy, Summer, Griffin, Dustin, Colby)

E - .02-.06%. Uncommon names. You’re aware these are names, but they are not common. Unusual enough they may be remarked upon. (1998 examples: Calista, Skye, Precious, Fabian, Justice, Lorenzo)

F - .01-.02%. Rare names. You may have heard of these names, but you probably don’t know anyone with one. Extremely unusual, and would likely be remarked upon. (1998 examples: Emerald, Lourdes, Serenity, Dario, Tavian, Adonis)

G - Very rare names. There are only a handful of people with these names in the entire country. You’ve never met anyone with this name.

H - Virtually non-existent. Names that theoretically could have existed in the Regency period (their original source pre-dates the early 19th century) but I found fewer than five (and often no) period examples of them being used in Regency England. (Example names taken from romance novels and online Regency name lists.)

Just to once again reinforce how POPULAR popular names were before we get to the tier lists - statistically, in a ballroom of 100 people in Regency London: 80 would have names from tiers S+/S. An additional 15 people would have names from tiers A/B and C. 4 of the remaining 5 would have names from D/E. Only one would have a name from below tier E.

I was going to continue on and write about why Regency-era first names were so uniform, discuss historically accurate surnames, nicknames, and include a little guide to finding 'unique' names that are still historically accurate - but this post is already very, very long, so that will have to wait for a later date.

Methodology notes: All data is from marriage records covering six parishes in the City of Westminster between 1804 and 1821. The total sample size was 50,950 individuals.

I chose marriage records rather than births/baptisms as I wanted to focus on individuals who were adults during the Regency era rather than newborns. I think many people make the mistake when researching historical names by using baby name data for the year their story takes place rather than 20 to 30 years prior, and I wanted to avoid that. If you are writing a story that takes place in 1930 you don’t want to research the top names for 1930, you need to be looking at 1910 or earlier if you are naming adult characters.

I combined (for my own sanity) names that are pronounced identically but have minor spelling differences: i.e. the data for Catherine also includes Catharines and Katherines, Susannah includes Susannas, Phoebe includes Phebes, etc.

The compound 'Mother's/Grandmother's maiden name used as first name' designation is an educated guesstimate based on what I recognized as known surnames, as I do not hate myself enough to go through 25,000+ individuals and confirm their mother's maiden names. So if the tally includes any individuals who just happened to be named Fitzroy/Hastings/Townsend/etc. because their parents liked the sound of it and not due to any familial relations - my bad.

I did a small comparative survey of 5,000 individuals in several rural communities in Rutland and Staffordshire (chosen because they had the cleanest data I could find and I was lazy) to see if there were any significant differences between urban and rural naming practices and found the results to be very similar. The most noticeable difference I observed was that the S+ tier names were even MORE popular in rural areas than in London. In Rutland between 1810 and 1820 Elizabeths comprised 21.4% of all brides vs. 15.3% in the London survey. All other S+ names also saw increases of between 1% and 6%. I also observed that the rural communities I surveyed saw a small, but noticeable and fairly consistent, increase in the use of names with Biblical origins.

one Spencer often went away for long periods of time, it came with having a job at the BAU. Despite missing him and disliking how quiet your home becomes, you knew what you were getting into. You would never stop him from going on a case, no matter how little time you get to spend with him in between.

The longing for your partner was not onesided. There were times Spencer hated to be away for so long, to come home for a few days before leaving you again. He disliked how lonely he felt at night, the bed in the hotel felt too large without someone else there.

It's why he was out and about in whatever city he was in at the time. He would send you photos of things that remind him of you. Maybe some blooming flowers out front of a store. A dog that vaguely looks like you. A couple of birds sitting on a branch together.

Sometimes they would be accompanied by messages. 'thinking of you'. 'doesn't it kinda look like you?'. 'did you know these birds mate for life'. Just small facts or messages that always bring a smile to your face.

It helped ease the loneliness when he was away, knowing he was thinking of you just as much as you were thinking of him.

two While you weren't as much of a book addict as Spencer, you enjoyed reading. You often asked the man to recommend one for you to read. It always brought a smile to his face as he rambled on about the plot and characters, ensuring he did not give anything away. You read at a much more leisurely pace than your partner who could read large chapter books like it was a small letter.

Sometimes you were a bit jealous of his ability to read so fast, not wishing to wade through a large part of the text before getting to the exciting part. But you could not help but enjoy curling up in a chair with a cup of tea and a good book.

Persuasion by Jane Austen was the book you were currently reading, being recommended after expressing a desire for a romance book. But as you read you began to notice small annotations hastily scribbled in Spencer's handwriting. Somewhere about the characters or the thoughts on the themes. But some were drawing parallels to your relationship.

The more you read the less the annotations became about the book and more about your relationship. You found it endearing, more reading the book to get to the next annotation than the next chapter. A stupid love-sick smile graced your face as your eyes skimmed over the writing squeezed in between paragraphs.

The sound of footsteps graced your ears as you quickly began finishing the page you were on. "Enjoying the book?" Spencer's voice rang out, wanting to ensure his recommendation was right. Glazing up at him from the book your smile only grew. "Yes, I am. But I find myself liking the annotations better."

It took a moment for Spencer to understand before the tip of his ears flushed red as well as his cheeks. His eyes flicked downwards as he grappled with what to say. Deciding to give him a break you speak again. "I find them very cute. Shows how much you love me."

three It wasn't often that Spencer had time to sleep in, not getting up at the crack of dawn to get an early start on his work. So, you wanted to do something sweet for him, and what was better than breakfast in bed? What you didn't account for was him waking up before you were finished.

Humming a tune to yourself, you failed to hear the patter of sock-clad feet on the floor. Too busy making sure you didn't overcook the eggs in the frying pan. When two lanky arms wrapped around your middle, it caused a squeak of surprise to be pulled from you. The spatula in your hand dropped onto the counter in surprise.

Soft, muffled laughter filled the room, a mop of brown curls invading your vision as Spencer buried his face into your shoulder. A small huff leaves you, realising your surprise is ruined. "You're meant to be asleep." You whined though a small smile played on your lips, enjoying the sleepy back hug you were receiving.

"Sorry, darling. I just missed you in bed." His voice was rough with sleep, clearly having only woken up moments ago to an empty bed and set out to find you. Reaching one hand up you ran your fingers through his messy hair pulling a small hum of pleasure from him.

"Why don't you go back to bed? I'll bring breakfast and we can spend the morning there?" You offer softly, it takes a moment before you feel a soft nod. Spencer untangling himself from you before trudging off to bed once more, a small lovesick smile on his face.

This Week in BL - I'm having a GREAT time

Aug 2024 Week 5

Ongoing Series - Thai

Monster Next Door (Thai Thurs Gaga ) eps 7-8 of 12 - I do love these 2 a lot. It’s such a slow burn sweet comforting quiet little romance. It’s not complicated, it’s not stretching my thoughts or imagination, but it is easy and absorbing. I'm entertained by it without being taxed. And sometimes that’s nice. It's what Thailand does best.

Addicted Heroin (Thai Tues WeTV) ep 3 of 10 - Oh I’m still enjoying it. It’s only episode three and they’re basically boyfriend’s palling around shopping together and hanging out on a bicycle. What’s not to love? Also he got to meet the in-laws. Well… eventual in-laws. Also the girlfriend character. I totally forgot about her. Good times.

Sunset X Vibes (Sat iQIYI) ep 12fin - Baby faints. Bad guys caught and beat up a bit. Lots of romantic moments, come checking in with ALL the sides, and it ends.

Summary?

Classic CEO meets ingenue archetypes make for a somewhat banal and simplistic romance. This could’ve come from an 80s Harlequin, except that they’re gay. It's... old fashioned. There was nothing meta about this, there was no subversion or commentary on anything BL, queer, or beyond. It’s just a straight up (okay not straight) romance. I was not wild about these characters for this particular pair, but that’s not the pair's fault, they did a decent job with their parts and I look forward to their next show - here’s hoping it’s a bit more meaty. I preferred the side couple because they were more complex and true to BL archetypes, even if they were also a bit miss-handled. A serviceable show if somewhat lacking in its convictions, but with some beautiful sex scenes, people, and fashion. I was a particular fan of Lin‘s gender bending femme style. It’s groundbreaking to see that aesthetic on one of the leads. There were multiple times they could’ve leaned into well established plot points, paranormal elements, and character tension, and instead just glossed over them.

This should probably get a 7/10, but I’m giving it an 8 because of that one oppa line at the beginning, Tenon's tatas, and the call back to Big Dragon with that iconic musical refrain in the final episode. It was a pretty fun ride, emphasis on pretty and ride. 

Battle of the Writers (Sun YT) ep 5 of 12 - Lots of kissing this episode. And lots of different kinds of kissing from the same two actors in various different forms and characters. I really liked it. It’s nice to see that this pair can mix it up a little bit, even if it's just with their lips.

I Saw You in My Dream (Weds Gaga) ep 7 of 12 - OK the leg care massage was so boyfriend I can’t even. Who are they trying to fool? I love the way Ing always knows exactly what is going on. Thank goodness for that confession! I’m very much looking forward to the next episode.

The Trainee (Sun YouTube) ep 9 of 12 - Still couldn’t care less about the hets. Yawn. Ah Jane’s ex shows up. (Is that Green? Hi baby!) Meanwhile, Jane gets worried and jealous. I loved Pah in this ep, and almost wish this were a show just about him. Like a grown-up Green Fictions. (Where tf did Poon COME from allasudden? He’s a killer actor. GMMTV better use him wisely.) Also, in that scene with Pat and P’Jo, they’re eating some of my favorite food. I got a little bit of linguistic negotiation with Khun Par Phi. Cuteness. And we end with some actual communication. Yay!!! It’s kind of hilarious to see OffGun in a tentative hug. I don’t think they’ve been that way for a years.

In fact, this whole episode was pretty much about communicating properly between ages and ranks within an office and social structure. I loved that. I’m liking this one more this week. It’s still not my favorite currently airing, but I think that mostly has to do with how much other good stuff is on right now.

SPEAKING OF...

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

The On1y One (Taiwan Thurs Gaga) eps 3-4 of 12 - Uh huh, a game of one-up-man-ship is it? I think not. That boy wants to jump his cute stepbrother’s bones so bad that big brain of his is starting to melt. I'm here for it. Also, said sunshine cutie is clearly a big old cock tease. Everybody is happy about this. They sure know how to end these episodes on cliffhangers too. I don’t know how I’m gonna wait until next week.

I’m legit mad about how fucking good this is. After Unknown too?! Taiwan is spoiling us this year and THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN DOING IT ALL ALONG.

Sugar Dog Life (Japan Sun grey) ep 3-4 of 10 - Oh my goodness do I love this show. It makes me laugh, I adore the premise, I'm wild over the characters, and the acting is killer. I’m just really happy about this show, OK? I tend to sing and clap: Oh they so cute.

Baby got his first crush and he has no idea what to do about it. I ADORE how angry he is about it. Like... How dare I even consider falling in love with somebody? How annoying of me. It’s great. I even liked the girl in the confession and how cool and sweet they both were to each other over his rejection. Bang up job. This is fantastic BL of the newer modern style. (As contrasted to On1y)

These top two shows are neck and neck for best of the week, for entirely different reasons. But I love all my sons.

Speaking of...

Cosmetic Playlover (Japan Tues Gaga) eps 7-8 fin - Oh it’s so adorable with the drama and the little subordinate coming to their rescue, and them meeting each other’s family. "I want to become someone who is essential in your life" = peak romance.

Summation?

I loved this little show. It was a classic office BL about the older workaholic who loves his job and the younger upstart who unexpectedly loves his boss. It’s a hyung romance where everybody is extremely earnest and sweet and pretty about everything. Except our seme, who is slightly unhinged and a little obsessed in all the ways one likes best from Japan. Plus the kisses were good! I can’t ask for anything more, utterly charming unexpected gem of a show. What a great time! 9/10

I Hear the Sunspot AKA Hidamari ga Kikoeru (Japan Weds Gaga) ep 11 of 12 - The lack of communication between these 2 may actually drive me insane. But I still love them. Such a sad ep. 

Seoul Blues (Korea Fri? YouTube) ep 3 of 8 - Argh but also oooooo. I bet the uncut version was fantastic this week.

First Note Of Love (Taiwan Mon Gaga) eps 5-6 of 12 - I'm starting to like this better. I’m still not convinced, but I did enjoy watching it this week. I’m getting some chemistry off the leads. Admittedly. that’s because they both behave like 16-year-olds. Surprise MosBank cameo - looking handsome as ever, boys. (Honestly, Taiwan really wants that King of the Cameos crown.) And FINALLY our side couple. I’m looking forward to next week primarily because of them. And I don’t even have them yet!

Takara's Treasure AKA Takara No Vidro (Japan Mon Gaga) ep 9 of 10 - OK the lap cuddle was v cute. As was the handholding. But hiking with a metal griddle? Insanity. Might be the craziest thing in a BL this year. And The Sign aired this year. Meanwhile, not a dead fish kiss! Yay! 

It's airing but...

4 Minutes (Sat Gaga) eps 1-6 of 8 - Gaga picked this one up so we can watch it there. I'm waiting until the end, it seems angsty and confusing and full of awful people being awful. But also... high heat and I'm shallow. So we shall see which devil wins (and how it ends).

QL - Currently Watching

🇹🇭 4 Minutes [6/8] - Finally some answers. I haven't read all the theories floating around about this last episode and what it means, but I'm firmly on the side of, there is another alternative timeline, probably from when Tyme is dying at the start of the show, and also very much in agreement with everything @lurkingshan wrote here that these are just imagined do-overs and nothing will actually change in the real world. Which would be my preferred way.

🇹🇭 Addicted Heroin [2/10] - Haven't watched this weeks episode yet. My review for the first two is here.

🇹🇼 First Note of Love [4/12] - I like them a lot. And I like the pacing of this. I love the intro song. But with a second couple being introduced I think I'm gonna get frustrated having to wait a week for a 20 minute episode. I felt that way a lot during Kiseki.

🇯🇵 I Hear the Sunspot [10/12] - I am annoyed.

🇹🇭 I Saw You In My Dream [7/12] - May the boyfriend era commence. I am enjoying this one. I'm guessing we still have a bit of angst coming and I'm hoping for a good explanation for the dreams.

🇯🇵 Mitsuya Sensei no Keikakutekina Ezuke [6/7] - Just such an incredible show. This week brought the pain and I'm still unwell. As if Frito getting sick wasn't heart breaking enough, that ending left me in tears. I cannot believe we only have one episode left. I am not ready to say goodbye to the three of them.

🇹🇭 Monster Next Door [6/12] - My favourite thing about this is definitely Big. His presence on screen is great. But I'm not fully connecting yet for some reason.

🇹🇭 Peaceful Property [1/10] - It's a lot of fun. Yeah, I know it's not a bl. But it's bl adjacent so it goes here. Also in my head it's gonna be a bl no matter what. Possibly even with a gl side couple. The mind is a powerful thing.

🇯🇵Sugar Dog Life [4/10] - I love Isumi. I really liked that they didn't drag the girl storyline and it served it's purpose. Isumi is now very much aware of it's feelings. I'm looking forward to the date episode.

🇯🇵 Takara No Vidro [9/11] - Takara, my love. This boy has my whole heart. I can't believe I'll have to say goodbye to then tomorrow. I'm bracing for part pain, part happy. Please Japan don't let me down.

🇹🇭 The Loyal Pin [1/16] - I'm waiting to binge.

🇹🇼 The On1y One [4/10] - This show will hurt and I will love every second of it. I really like the look of this show and how we get those little insights into Jiang at the end of the episode. The actors are doing great and I specially love Benjamin Tsang facial expressions. I'm curious to see these two together and how their dynamic will work considering their circumstances. Also, always happy to see the revolving door of cameos Taiwan always grace us with.

🇯🇵Twilight Out of Focus - It's so beautiful. I'm enjoying that we get different couples even if sometimes it feels like we could have more time with them. I like Rei/Shion a lot, but I do miss Mao and Hisashi. 🇹🇭 The Trainee [10/12] - Just to get it out if the way, the Bamhee/Judy storyline was definitely the right call and @lurkingshan was right all along. Also the way the office came together was delightful and it's great to see Pah getting everyone together and once again being the best friend ever. Now. THE OFFICE FLIRTING!!! I was losing my mind giggling like an idiot. I love them. It's pretty obvious at this point that it's mutual and of course Ryan will need to actually be told that, but I still think Jane will wait until the internship is over before confessing or starting anything official. I can't wait to watch all the interns reaction next week. I love it here.

QL - Finished

🇯🇵 Ayaka is in Love with Hiroko! - I'm disappointed in this one. It started off so strong but by the end it lost me. I love Hiroko but I feel like they betrayed the character. And that ending with the kiss in the office was ridiculous. Actually most of the end was weird in the way that it seemed to contradict what came before. I like that they finally got together but it didn't feel as good as it could've.

🇹🇭 Century of Love - Started of great and imo fell apart by the end. I don't think it was consistent all the way through and the mythology was all over the place. Daou did an amazing job though. Also Ju is one of the greatest female characters of the year.

🇯🇵 Cosmetic Playlover - Pretty show. Final thoughts here.

🇹🇭 Knock Knock, Boys! - Probably the biggest surprise of the year for me. It's great. I like the development of both couples. Even if near the end I got a tiny bit annoyed with Peak, I really liked the conclusion of it all. Latte is a great character and the very rare slut unjudged by the narrative.

🇹🇭🇨🇳 Meet You At the Blossom - Look it's great that we got a chinese bl, but this was not it for me. Let's hope this one helps get others made though.

🇹🇭Love Sea - It was fine. I enjoyed Mut but in general I just never connected to this show. And Muk annoyed me to no end. I was so happy to see Aya again and now I just wanna forget that she was ever in this and simply remember her as Yiwa.

🇹🇭 SunsetxVibes - I don't even have words. I don't know if it was my lack of attention or if it never actually made sense but I never really got what the mythology was all about apart from inspiring a truly horrendous looking necklace. I was slogging though this one and I guess the finale was fine.

🇹🇭 This Love Doesn't Have Long Beans - The sides were great, their chemistry was on point. I really wanna see them again. The mains were my favourite thing about Pit Babe but I just didn't like them here.

🇹🇭 The Rebound - I just have to accept that MeenPing will always have bad scripts. They are pretty together but this was a mess.

Writerly Questionnaire

I got tagged back in my own questionnaire (tysm @saturnine-saturneight), so here we go!

About You

When did you start writing? I’ve been writing since I could hold a pen, quite frankly! As a toddler, I’d draw doodles then scrawl zig zags beneath to represent the “words” of the illustrated story. They became real words as I learned to read. I was never found without a notebook.

Are the genres/themes you enjoy reading different from the ones you write? I read a lot of stuff I don’t think I could ever actually write. My all-time favorite author is Cormac McCarthy, followed by Jane Austen and Jack London. Larry McMurtry is becoming a fast favorite. My stories tend to require less lived experience. I am not well traveled or thoroughly educated, so, while I’m happy to do research, I most often write stuff that requires less expertise. I also write more about gay cowboys than any of the authors named above — at least as far as is publicly known.

Is there an author (or just a fellow writer!) you want to emulate, or one to whom you’re often compared? I have been compared to Chuck Palahniuk, which is enormously flattering (if not deserved!) It’s massively important to me to have my own style/voice, so I don’t want to write like anyone but me… but I would love one day to harness even a modicum of McCarthy’s talent.

Can you tell me a little about your writing space(s)? (Room, coffee shop, desk, etc.) At a desk or coffee shop. The stars must align just so, my mood must be just so, I must have creative juices flowing and absolutely no distractions or particularly strong feelings. (I end up not writing anything more often than not.)

What’s your most effective way to muster up some muse? I wish I knew. Inspiration hits me light a lightning bolt once in a blue moon. Other than that, maladaptive daydreaming watching head movies. Music is an excellent source of muse.

Did the place(s) you grew up in influence the people and places you write about? Absolutely. In a way that reminds me a bit of Donald Ray Pollock, who writes about a pretty bleak and raunchy Appalachia.

Are there any recurring themes in your writing, and if so, do they surprise you at all? Loneliness, self-loathing, self sabotage, addiction in many forms, mental illness, abuse, and suicidal ideation/thoughts/attempts, “taboo” romances (usually sexuality vs time period). Some of these come as a slight surprise; others are no surprise at all.

Your Characters

Would you please tell me about your current favorite character? (Current WIP, past WIP, never used, etc.) It’s Shiloh. I have no idea why. He’s been my favorite since 2018 or 2019. He’s weird as hell but writing him comes effortlessly.

Which of your characters do you think you’d be friends with in real life? Preferably none. They’re kinda awful. In all seriousness, maybe Lou? He’s chill and makes a good listener.

Which of your characters would you dislike the most if you met them? Ruck. We have nothing in common, would have nothing to talk about, and his poor decisions would stress me out. He’s one of my favorite characters I’ve ever written, but I would hate to actually know him.

Tell me about the process of coming up with of one, all, or any of your characters. Just about every one of my favorites started out as a side character meant to garner very little attention. Somehow or another, they demanded to be written — demanded I let their personalities shine. And lo, here they are.

Do you notice any recurring themes/traits among your characters? Mentally ill lonesome addicts.

How do you picture them? (As real people you imagined, as models/actors who exist in real life, as imaginary artwork, as artwork you made or commissioned, anime style, etc.) As real people! Often I’ll pick a model/actor as a template, but they always evolve into a slightly varied appearance from that person in my imagination.

Your Writing

What’s your reason for writing? It feels so compulsory there’s no other option but to write.

Is there a specific comment or type of comment you find particularly motivating coming from your readers? I like when people tell me what they felt when they read my writing. Whether it’s attachment or hatred aimed at a character, or nostalgia, or just feeling like they were there when the scene took place. Anything that shows they absorbed and enjoyed it feels like the hugest compliment.

How do you want to be thought of by those who read your work? (For example: as a literary genius, or as a writer who “gets” the human condition; as a talented worldbuilder, as a role model, etc.) I want people to think, this bitch loves words. She loves writing. She is a writer.

What do you feel is your greatest strength as a writer? Making people feel endeared to the characters. Realistic dialogue. Getting inside a character’s head.

What have you been frequently told your greatest writing strength is by others? Pacing & setting description. Which is awesome, but I always feel like these things are weaknesses of mine? I’m always iffy about them - pacing in particular. I have no idea how to do it, but I’ve been told I do it well. That said, there are definitely things -I- think I do well that get the most negative feedback/criticism.

How do you feel about your own writing? (Answer in whatever way you interpret this question.) Writing is the only thing I feel I do relatively well. I’m certainly not the world’s best, and I don’t think I’m really ready to be published or anything like that - but I am pretty proud of it. It’s the only thing I feel this way about. I want to show it to people. I wanna talk about it. I love to read what I wrote. It feels gross to say that, but I’m making myself say it anyway, lmfao. I love to see other people feel this way vs anxious or self conscious about their writing.

If you were the last person on earth and knew your writing would never be read by another human, would you still write? Yeah, for sure. I don’t know if I’d write as much fiction, because part of the fun is talking with others about it. But I’d still journal, and I would still imagine stories in my mind.

When you write, are you influenced by what others might enjoy reading, or do you write purely what you enjoy? If it’s a mix of the two, which holds the most influence? I hate this question, wtf Davy. It’s a slight mix. I’ll admit a part of me wants validation from others, but a larger part would rather write what she wants to write than turn it into a chore. Doing something just to entertain others is definitely a chore. My writing is heavily self-indulgent and I think it may suffer a little from that - but it also means when people enjoy it, they enjoy it more. I think it’s the same for any writer who does it this way. When I belonged to a huge online critique group, I edited the life out of a novel I was working on and made it less enjoyable to its biggest fans while trying to net a larger audience. I now know that was a huge mistake, because having a tiny group of people who eat your shit up is way better than having a ton of people read it, approve of it, but ultimately forget it existed because it wasn’t memorable.

Wayne hasn’t been feeling too confident in his looks, lately. Usually he doesn’t care, but when he looks at Eddie, he wishes he still had hair like that. Every so often in Hawkins a new person gets the “hair” nickname. Currently it’s Steve Harrington, Eddie’s friend — or more than a friend, Wayne’s not too sure — and it reminded him of when that used to happen in Tennessee too. When Wayne was in highschool, he was “the hair.”

He’s surprised he hasn’t died yet from the fumes of hairspray finally catching up to him, but the smoking will do that someday. All the products he used to use, all the times at school when the girls would come to him for hair techniques… All of that is gone now, and so is his hair.

A slight sob catches in his throat as he runs his fingers over what’s left of his hair. What’s left of his hair… Nothing much. It’s gray and white and barely there now. But he can’t let go of his highschool days. How the hell is he supposed to go back out into the dating scene without his long, luscious locs to help him?

He hasn’t dated since then, hasn’t had the courage or the confidence. Even when he still had his hair, he couldn’t bring himself to ask a girl out.

Some people can take up addictions to help with loss and grief, but if he were to tell anyone he’s a smoker because it helps him deal with the stress of losing his hair and not being “attractive” anymore, they’d laugh at him, make a joke out of it. There’s only so many jeers and snide comments he can take before he drives back home and cries himself to sleep.

He’s been doing that a lot lately, hoping his pillow muffles it enough so Eddie can’t hear. But Eddie can’t exactly hear anything outside of his room when he’s blasting that goddamn metal. Not that it’s bad or anything, Wayne likes it too, sometimes, but only when it’s not at an eardrum-shattering volume.

Today is the worst of it, the worst he’s felt in a long ass time about his looks. But there’s no point in buying a wig or trying to grow it out again because anyone who knows him already knows what he looks like without it. So there’s no point, and he won’t bother.

But maybe having hair might help him feel better about himself? No, it takes too long to grow out and he sure as hell knows nothing’s gonna grow on the top of his head anymore, maybe the sides, but that’ll look ridiculous.

So he doesn’t bother.

It’s only in the evening when he’s starting to feel a little better and has stopped crying. But not for long… because as he walks to the bathroom, the sound of a hair trimmer buzzes to life and someone’s laughing quietly to themselves in the bathroom.

Eddie.

It’s Eddie.

Half of his— what the fuck?

“What in the goddamn hell are you doing, son?” Wayne exclaims, watching as another few strands of Eddie’s hair fall into the sink. “Wha— Eddie! Put that damn thing down!”

Eddie does, in fact, not put that damn thing down and continues shaving. Strand after strand, his smile grows wider, and he looks at Wayne’s reflection in the mirror.

“Hair grows back,” Eddie says with a half smile. “I did it for you.”

“Why?” Wayne can't stop the tears from falling now, they gather in his lower eyelashes and drop down onto his cheeks.

“Because I want you to know that you’ve still got it. With or without hair. You’re a handsome man, and if anyone disagrees they’re obviously blind. You don’t need hair to be handsome and I don’t either.”

“You’re crazy,” Wayne says, laughing a little.

“On the contrary, I’m a genius,” Eddie says with another smile. “And I’m also doing this to help my friend, Jane. A bad man shaved her head and she hasn’t been feeling confident, says she looks ugly without hair. But she doesn’t. You look handsome without hair, she looks beautiful without hair, and Jim Hopper looks hotter than ever without hair.”

“Boy, don’t you dare tell me you’ve still got a thing for Jim.”

Eddie stays silent. Wayne frowns.

“What?” Eddie says, holding his hands up. “You gotta admit he’s hot.”

Wayne tuts. “He’s old enough to be your old man!”

“So?” Eddie smirks. “I’m legal, he’s legal…”

“He’s also married!”

Eddie gasps. “Jim and Joyce got married?! Why wasn’t I invited?!”

“I don’t think they’d want you jumping up on the tables at the reception, son,” Wayne replies, turning off the machine for him.

“I don’t— Oh… You’ve got a point.”

“I’ve got a point and no hair.”

“Me too!”

“No, I was right, you were wrong, son. I have the point.”

Eddie shrugs. “Alright, fine. You win. But he’s still ho—”

“No, not finishing this conversation,” Wayne interrupts, backing away out the door. “Be with someone your own age, like Harrington’s kid. I see the way you look at him and he looks at you—”

“And I’m not having that conversation,” Eddie replies.

Wayne snickers, starting to feel like himself again.

“No. Wayne, no. I don’t… I don’t like him like that! We’re just friends.”

“Mhm mhm.”

“Wayne!” Eddie whines. “Stop!”

“Son,” Wayne says, placing a hand on Eddie’s shoulder. “Just try.”

“Okay fine, I’ll only do it if you ask Claudia on a date.”

“You want Dustin to be your brother, huh?” Wayne’s smiling again, so is Eddie.

“If I ever have an argument with Steve over who Dustin’s favorite is I wanna be able to say it’s obviously me ‘cause I’m his brother,” Eddie says. “But no, that’s not the only reason. You wanna find love, right? At least try. The worst she can say is no.”

“I’ve got better things to be doing than—”

“Remember the deal? You said—”

“Alright, fine!” Wayne throws his hands up. And he wonders where Eddie gets his dramatics from… “I’ll ask her on a date.”

Eddie fist pumps the air. “I love you!” He barrels Wayne into a hug.

Wayne smiles again, and finally, he feels like maybe he can still be handsome without his hair. He’s gonna remember this day for the rest of his life, maybe even add a part about it into his wedding speech if things with Claudia go well.

One thing I hate about the homestuck fandom is how many people just didn't read the comic or just glossed over the words and skipped to the pretty pictures.

"I thought Jane and Jake were related? Why are you hippping them?" They are not. They are clones of themselves from an alternate timeline. The only reason for thinking they were related stems from how Grandpa Harley and Nana Egbert were raised together and saw each other as siblings. Two very different scenarios for their upbringing in both the Alpha and Beta timelines. Beta = found family. Alpha = not found family. Either way, they are not related biologically at all.

"Gamzee was evil bc he went sober" No. He was directly mind-controlled by Lil Cal (Caliborn). However, his mind was weakened from not only being sober (addiction sucks ass) but also from having his religion/worldview flipped on its head (Dave showing Gamzee ICP). He was more susceptible to Cal's influence. It's a more "read in between the lines" type of deal, but he did not go around killing people or abusing Terezi simply because he was sober.

"June is canon because I keep seeing people talk about June (as in John transition in the comics)" June is cool, but you can't take Hussie's word as law because he sucks. June could still be canon in Beyone Canon and Pesterquest hints at it (heavily) (yippee). But John still exists and is called John through the (current) whole of Homestuck, the Epilogues, and Beyond Cannon.

"Roxy sexually harassed Dirk and is awful (knows Dirk is gay and saw the one pannnel where Roxy hugged Dirk)" Roxy was alone for most of her life. Hal leads her on because Hal can do whatever the fuck he wants because he's a computer who enjoys chaos. Roxy hugging Dirk (the first real human she's ever seen) is not harassment. She did have romantic feelings toward him, yes. That is not up for debate. But he's still one of the only people in her life she could have formed a bond with at all and didn't pursue him romantically. More just left it alone and talked about her personal struggle.

Quick! Kiss Me! [Part 4: Leviathan]

I'm back. Let me know if the story is cohesive. It tried to copy itself more than once. I just killed the post and redid it. It was weird.

Note: I’ve taken some liberties with whether or not the boys have a “true” demon form. I personally believe that the in-game form we see is the one that’s easiest for humans to see/reason with/tolerate. I don’t think that’s their real demon form. I believe their true forms would be more monstrous and maybe have more traits in common with their symbolic animal. Another personal headcanon: Levi’s giant-ass aquarium isn’t confined to the back wall of his room. I think it can actually span at least two sides of the house and they just panel over it because he doesn’t want to be seen when he swims. So between layers of dry wall and such, there’s his aquarium. It’s like his secret little tunnel around the house that has several exits but he prefers the one in his room (which is why he made that room HIS room when they first moved into the House of Lamentation).

Side note: for my personal use, I headcanon the library as Lucifer’s study. He just kind of has this…pocket dimension made for himself in there. The brothers can find it if he allows it. Sometimes he’ll throw magic around it to disguise it. You have to go through the library to get to it. Anyways, onto the story. This one may not be as long as the others. We’ll see where it goes

Leviathan:

You’d made several laps around the House of Lamentation. The dizzying, bubbly feeling had yet to return. It was like a tease, lasting for a pulse or two in certain rooms and then fleeing as quick as it came. Everything else was a dull buzz, cold bubbles in your chest. After your last lap you stopped in the kitchen for a drink of water—soon after remembering you couldn’t currently open your mouth—and locked eyes with Beel. A displeased fizzle shot through you; your mouth suddenly dry for another reason.

That was an unexpected sign but it was a reaction. Maybe you just needed to go look at the other brothers to figure out who DIDN’T give you that feeling?! Beel’s purple eyes flicked over your locked lips; he smothered a hum with a bite of pastry. He seemed to sense he wasn’t the one for you. “Lucifer’s in his study if you want to try him next.”

The tip was appreciated but the walk was not. Each step towards the eldest’s study sent a wave of stomach-churning nausea through you. It was like the ultimate gut feeling of ‘turn back!’, your stomach so sour it felt like it was curling in on itself. Unable to stand the tartness prickling on your tongue or the sweat beading on your brow, you bolted away from the shimmering door and past rows of books to find reprieve down the hall. Not Lucifer, you thought to yourself, doubled over with your hands on your knees as if that would help all the acid yuck drain away from your chest and mouth, not Lucifer.

Something cold touched the back of your neck and you snapped up, wincing at a pinch going through your lower back. The yelp failed to break past your lips, your brain switched gears to help you exhale the nervous energy through your nose as Satan registered in your periphery. His brow creased apologetically, squishing a damp cloth against the back of your neck gingerly. “You seemed ill. I was trying to help.” he dabbed at your neck and traced the curve of your cheek with the cloth, green eyes watching the flush fade from your neck.

You must’ve run right by him in the library and not even realized it.

The cloth was a simple, well-meaning gesture between friends, you both knew that. You got the feeling he’d been reading his romance books again, maybe questioning how a small moment like this could be what lovers immortalized and built a life on. How did clichés like this become addictive classics? You felt pondered and marveled but not revered, a bit like how Jane first looks at the sketch of Tarzan at the camp. “Your love lies elsewhere, I think.” Satan murmured, perhaps to both you and himself, as he deemed you healthy enough to go to the second floor and find whoever was meant to undo the cosmetic chaos.

The squeak of the last step died in your ear as a white-hot knowing consumed you. It silenced everything else around you, throwing you into a tunnel that ended at Leviathan’s door. You’d almost felt like you’d teleported, not totally sure how you knew to go to his door instead of the others. No bubbles, no acid—his doorknob felt strangely cool and comforting in your hand.

Your nerves settled.

The door opened into a room washed in blues; the air was a little cooler here but not damp. If not for the bioluminescent life in his large aquarium, the room would be pitch black. There was no Levi, no anime running, no controllers clicking….nothing. Large swaths of kelp danced at the edges of the tank, framing the open water quite beautifully. A tiny bottom-feeder fish sucked at the base of seaweed clusters, scaring a Cerith snail back into their shell when it nudged a rock in its direction.

You forgot how much of a labor of love this aquarium was. Levi put a lot of time into it between the physical cleaning and the species research. Placing your palms on the glass wasn’t enough to sate the desire to just…sink through it and bob in the water. Maybe it could wash off the makeup? A trio of Devildom teacup jellies twinkled as if to invite you in.

A longing drummed painfully in your chest, just shy of feeling like an open wound. It was like a tender crack in your very being. Levi’s mark glowed on your body, casting a dim yellow light against the glass. Something large and dark cut through the expanse, stirring up a layer of dirt and whipping the smaller creatures around in their own little maelstrom. Pebbles clinked against the glass as the creature folded itself around to press against the glass.

Levi?! You’d be lying if you said your legs didn’t turn to jelly as the sediment haze cleared to reveal a towering serpentine creature with Levi’s face. His tail was long and smooth, glistening onyx scales tapering into a barbed point hemmed by fluttering webbing on either side. The scales at his hips were drop-like and had more color variation; shades of gray decorated him and crept up to his navel. Something quill-like jutted out from his hips; they flexed in the water and you wondered if they acted like sensors. They looked awfully sharp

His chest was largely unchanged, still pale and lean. It was both a small comfort and a large contrast to how mottled and dark his arms were. The diamond pattern on the left side of his neck wound down his arm, obscuring where hand met claw. Those were most definitely claws now; they couldn’t even pass for fingers. Leviathan’s right arm wasn’t as dominated by the diamond pattern but the hands matched.

Levi’s shoulders were capped in scales almost like a defense mechanism. His face was the same, save for his eyes and little markings under them that reminded you of his branching coral horns. Diamond pupils dilated as he sank down to see you face-to-face, pushing the haunting gold of his iris to near nothingness. Can you see me? You’re not saying anything back.

I see you, Levi finally answered, his voice surprisingly measured and serene despite his…feral-looking appearance. His lips puckered almost bashfully as he turned his face away slightly, pupil shrinking back to a normal slit as he bobbed in front of you. He eyed you intently, like a predator does its prey. A large fang slipped past the pucker of his lips, but just for a second. You almost thought you’d dreamt it.

Why do you need me? his tail flailed almost impatiently, maybe angrily. You lookin’ for one of those normies? He buried his claws in the bottom of the aquarium, scratching through the rocks and fighting off envious urges to strangle that he’d never really go through with. The quills at his hips flared and went rigid. Levi swung his torso back carefully, withdrawing spines from the nearby kelp and assessing the plant delicately.

Acid began to build up in your chest and you wondered if this is what his envy felt like manifested.

No, you answered quietly, I’m looking for you.

Your lips are still sealed shut?! Levi could’ve knot his tail in disbelief, appendage coiling and uncoiling wildly at the prospect of you still being unclaimed. He hated this form of his—his true form—it left him with enough consciousness to know he was more devil than human, more instinct than logic.

More selfish than he cared to admit, too.

You kissed the tank to prove your point, feeling like your words would be lost on him. When Levi was in one of his moods—which he was—words did little to sway him. He needed actions when he was that far gone. Leviathan surged forward with great interest, gills at his neck fluttering and quills quivering as he looked at the glossy print. Will you kiss me, Leviathan?

Kiss you? Leviathan pursed his lips to suffocate his eager words, I would do more than kiss you. I would give you the sunrise, all of the sea’s riches, and my soul, itself, if you let me. The gross normie within him was simply bursting at the seams to give you the most epic romantic monologue guaranteed to boost your companion level at least ten points. Yeah, maybe some of that was ripped off from different animes but you would never know. Only his most favorite parts for you.

He pushed himself towards the top of the tank, tail boosting him up with little effort. A clawed hand breached the water, sending some kind of plug-like panel tumbling off to the side to land somewhere in his room. “You’ll need the chair,” Levi’s voice was whispery and melodious; you felt drawn in and almost mindless as you jammed the chair against the tank and stood up carefully. One arm on the rim of the tank, Levi held his breath and resisted the urge to snatch you up before his gills protested the lack of water.

His claws cut through the material of your shirt whether he wanted them to or not, Levi cringing at the sound of threads snapping. Your skin felt warm against the scales on his hands; his tongue flicked out from between his fangs. You were none the wiser, of course, facing away from him and now hanging obediently on the edge of the tank as he left to grab an herb that could help you breathe underwater. You went to bite the herb as he presented it to you but Levi hissed reflexively, a sound of warning as his fork tongue seemed to point at you in admonishment.

The herb was wrapped around your neck like a scarf. You winced and yelped as something jabbed into your neck. Satisfied, Levi took your hand as gently as possible and began to swim down. Your struggle was mindless and instinctual; Levi would be lying if he said it didn’t rouse something primal in him. Undeterred, he swam down into a patch of kelp, tail coiling around you and drawing you further into his chest.

You panicked and pushed against his chest and…breathed? The pressure of the water didn’t exist; your chest wasn’t burning for air. Those plant spines help you breathe under water. They’re like shunts for airflow. If you take them out, you won’t be able to breathe. Levi’s hands ghosted down your arms, claws hooking in a piece of your hair. He flinched, too scared to untangle himself.

I’d rather you help me breathe, you smiled brightly at him. Playfully.

He gurgled embarrassingly, his gills tensing open before resuming their fluttering. His cheeks tinged with color. You thought he’d throw you away in his embarrassment but his tail operated on truer feelings because he drew you closer. Leviathan’s kiss was shy but unmoving. You felt your mouth open up and it was the best breath you’d ever taken (even if you were under water).

A small current stirred the water around you, barely masking the sound of bones crackling. You watched the scales disappear under Leviathan’s skin, his normal tone returning as his tail shortened and split back into two human legs. Fins fell off, webbing retreating back into normal skin as the claws splintered away into human-ish nails. Veins tensed in his neck as his teeth resumed their normal form and his gills flattened back into regular skin. “There,” Leviathan hmph’ed, “Happy now?”

He tried to make it seem like a big chore but his cheeks were pinker than yours and his tail was wagging excitedly.

“Very.” You grinned. Now that you could breathe normally you felt a bit cold. The plant scarf may help you breathe in water but it didn’t make the saltwater sting any less or keep you warm. “Want to get out and dry off?”

You wouldn’t mind getting something to eat, either. It was a reflex to grab the lip of the aquarium and try to climb out Outside was waiting and you’d be warm, dry, and get food!

“Wait!” Leviathan fumbled as he wrapped his arms around you and yanked you back in. “You’ll suffocate!” he protested. If the weight of the scarf didn’t make things difficult, the lack of air would. He pressed you against a corner of the aquarium, nudging your arm over the lip as he kept the two of you afloat with his tail. You bobbed against each other, his hair dripping water into your eyes as he worked carefully to unwind the scarf.

The kelp scarf acted as a filter and was separate from the spines, you found out. Leviathan murmured the number of spines, turning your chin this way and that to look at them, careful not to bump them with his knuckles. He pinched your cheeks gently, anything he could think of to distract you from the bite of plucked spines. The two of you laughed between pinches of pain. It was cute in its own way.

“Hey! It’s just supposed to be a kiss! And none of those look like they’re on the lip! Look at you, dirty, dirty Levi!” Asmo laughed brightly from the doorway.

“It’s not--! They’re not--! Some normie like you isn’t gonna make fun of me like that!” Leviathan’s face grew redder and redder as he realized the spines left little red blossoms across your neck. Someone like Asmo WOULD mistake them for hickies! He hissed, launching himself out of the water with his tail. Asmo yelped as Leviathan snaked across his bedroom, slippery and ferocious. It reminded you that you were living in a house of people pretending to be human.

The pair collided and all you heard was:

“Don’t you spit poison at me! You didn’t know you had it until I showed you!”

“Keep talking and I’ll squeeze you.”

“You think that’ll do anything? I get choked on a regular—“

“UGH! STOP! WHY DO PEOPLE THINK OTAKUS ARE GROSS AND DIRTY? YOU’RE WORSE!”

“Yeah, but I’m cute—AHH! RUDE!”

“Did you just throw Asmo out of your room?” You leaned out of the tank, trying to plan your fall into the chair. Leviathan’s tail was still thrashing wildly, coiling and uncoiling.

“He deserved it!” Leviathan hissed, words cut by large, glinting fangs. He threw his back into the door, flicking the lock in place as Asmo kicked and yelled on the other side. Leviathan willed himself to ignore the noise in the hall and beyond, heart slamming in his chest and his ears as he looked at how small, pitiful, and wet you looked.

Humans need to stay warm, the thought kicked him into motion. He scrounged up dry clothes and tucked himself bashfully in the corner as you changed. “You want to watch some anime? Or a movie?” Leviathan thumbed the sticks on his controller as he slid into his bathtub bed. Only his hair was wet; you figured his serpentine skin just soaked up the excess water.

“Sure,” you’d just figured out how to get into the tub without pulling a muscle or falling in when Lucifer blew through the door like Leviathan never locked it. It startled you into the tub and you collapsed on top of him with a little apology.

“You know what you did,” Lucifer looked very menacing, staring down at the two of you. His feathers were bristled. He balanced a plastic cup on the rim of the tub. “If you don’t do it, I will.”

Leviathan started to protest out of reflex and Lucifer took the opportunity to grab the third-eldest by his purple hair and make him bite down on the cup. You watched in confused awe as Leviathan’s fangs hooked the cup and began to drip a strange liquid. He tried to wrestle his mouth off the cup but Lucifer kept his grip and pushed the cup into some sort of gland. “Demons with serpentine lineage must submit poison samples when an incident occurs to keep their strain on file. You know this, Levi.”       

Seems Leviathan had a history of spitting poison at people? Interesting.

Lucifer released him with a click of the tongue, satisfied. He pulled a wrapped popsicle out of his pocket and held it out to his younger brother like an olive branch. Leviathan took it with a scowl, squeezing it from the bottom so it popped out into his mouth. “No kissing for at least an hour,” Lucifer looked at the two of you sternly, “he needs time to neutralize his own poison.”

Was that what the popsicle was for, to dilute his own poison? Or maybe getting poison fangs hurt demons since they retract? Hell, Lucifer probably hurt his mouth with the cup. You both stayed quiet as he left, glad he shut the door behind him. Leviathan used the popsicle as a reason to stay quiet, turning on a random anime instead.

You leaned against his chest as the exhaustion of walking and swimming took over you. Your consciousness started to fade against the sound of a purr rumbling in Leviathan’s chest, just vaguely aware of his tail weaving itself around your leg. “Best ending unlocked,” Leviathan whispered excitedly to himself, panicking soon after as he tried to make sure the popsicle didn’t get in your hair.

Jesse x Bojack is Sansmaeda of DR96 /j

No because I’m going to hijack this ask to talk about those two now 😈

Jesse and Bojack, during the early stages, were always going to have some sort of dynamic. I mean, you literally had the perfect connection or Aaron Paul playing both Jesse and Todd. But, there are also many interesting similarities between Jesse and Bojack themselves. How they both have addictions and harmful habits. How they were both sent to rehab at the end of a season (BreBa s2 and BJHM s5). How they both had rough upbringings (Bojack a little more so of course). They were gonna be the fucked up besties of the fic.

(Which is funny considering I took both their characters just before they were sent to rehab. So they would be as screwed up as possible for the death game. I’m so evil I know)

I personally enjoyed their development over the course of the story. How Walter’s death kickstarted a mixture of rocky beginnings. How Retsuko’s friendship with Bojack muddied the waters with Jesse and his grief. How the 3rd motive forced them to interact more. How Natsuki slowly began to merge towards them following the death of Yuri and Ena.

I really loved writing their dynamics, from their fights to them just hanging out. The forth case really was a testament to their friendship, and how much Jesse got attached to Bojack. Jesse has a hard time being abandoned by those he loves (ergo Jane’s death canonically) so I really tried to reflect that in his breakdown during the 4th trial. Bojack, to me, had potential to be a good friend towards Jesse, but in his current state, I don’t think he really would’ve been able to unless he really tried to change. That’s why they’re so tragic yaoi (/JJJJJ)

The fact that their friendship was a major focus for the chapter 4 case does kinda make them the ‘sansmaeda’s of DR96 doesn’t it? Haha
