Ben's Big BL Blurb
I was traveling for a few weeks, and there's no way I'm doing individual posts for every show I've been watching, so here's my thoughts on all of the shows I'm currently enjoying, in the order I'm most enjoying them.
Twilight Out of Focus
Tumblr media
This show is fucking excellent. I'm not that keen on taking a break from our leads to see other couples, but I do like that BL continues to be the way that these guys are figuring out they're attracted to each other. Mao moving so smoothly into his boyfriend era, and knowing how he's feeling, has been excellent. I also really loved Hisashi knowing they needed to not be together all the time.
The Trainee
Tumblr media
Jane is so attractive, and I'm so happy for Off. This latest episode was a lot of fun to watch for Ryan, because it's nice seeing him be more actively engaged in things happening around him. Pai seems far more settled now that she knows she has a place. Pah is clearly still a mess. Tae seems like he's good at what he does. Ba-Mhee falling for Judy is NOT IDEAL, and Judy is over the line.
Overall, I'm actually interested in seeing them mirror interns crushing on their mentors with two different pairings as a point of comparison. I also like how every week feels like the work goals make sense.
The Miracle of Teddy Bear
Tumblr media
Besties, so much is happening in this show. There is daddy drama, wife drama, dead son drama, and so much more! These episodes are so long, but I'm really engaged with everything happening on this show. Job and Inn are really fucking good in this.
I Hear the Sunspot
Tumblr media
I'm so glad that Kohei made his feelings clear, and I'm enjoying seeing Taichi figure out how to respond to them. We once again had a camping trip that did not give me what I wanted, but I did like Kohei being clear that he's still interested in Taichi. Finally, I liked the little confirmations that Kohei is taking to sign, and that Taichi is interested in that journey.
Knock Knock, Boys!
Tumblr media
I'm so proud of Best! He has played Peak in this restrained way for so long, and it paid off in this most recent episode. I love that this story started with a gay man running from himself and his feelings, who then realizes that he can't run away from people who care about him anymore because they won't let him. I love that everyone being patient with him gave him what he needed to finally accept himself and say what he needed. I've really loved the way Thanwa tries to support Peak.
I'm also overjoyed for Almond and Latte, and I need them to fuck nasty before this show ends or I will be so disappointed. Latte is quietly one of my blorbos of the year with the way he is always clear about who he is and what he wants even as he is okay with where Almond is in the moment. They're an excellent pair.
Ayaka is in Love with Hiroko
Tumblr media
RISA IS OFF THE BESTIE LIST FOREVER! I will never forgive her for outing Hiroko to Ayaka just so she could ask Ayaka to choose her instead. Also, fuck those Bettys at the bar, who definitely know Hiroko's business, and that she's not out at work. Why talk about her to a stranger who called her senpai?? I'm relieved that Hiroko knows that Ayaka likes women now, and am curious how we move forward at this point.
I also need to know who this woman was who hurt Hiroko, because nothing makes me sadder than when we have to hide from other queers.
Mr. Mitsuya's Planned Feeding
Tumblr media
Thanks to @isaksbestpillow I was actually able to start this on my trip. I didn't want to start a show on a trip, but I could not resist. I really love that Ishida is in his late 20s and struggling with direction and purpose after his initial plan blew up in his face. I love that he's recognized so quickly that he's developed feelings for Mitsuya-sensei, and I love that Mitsuya-sensei is open about who he is. It's about goddamned time that we saw an age gap story of this kind, because so many meaningful relationships I've had are with gay men older than me.
Takara's Treasure
Tumblr media
This quiet little show makes me so happy every week. I just desperately need for Taishin to figure out what he's feeling, and for people to help him realize what he's feeling. Takara's my favorite kind of pretty boy: the ones who are obviously and poorly masking incredibly turmoil. I love that Taishin sees through this and wants to help Takara. Excited for him to get to take care of him when Takara gets sick.
Century of Love
Tumblr media
I've been having a lot of fun with this show, but episode 8 felt like a huge wobble. I love that San was so committed to Vee the whole time, but the back and forth about the stone was tedious. San giving up the stone as a way to signify that he was over the memory of Vad was nice, but we didn't reconcile Vee's theft and the emotional cost of that.
Love Sea
Tumblr media
MAHASAMUT!! WE FINALLY BEAT THAT NASTY OLD MAN'S ASS!! Mut trampling over a bullshit breakup and kicking Rak's dad's ass instead was so satisfying that it almost makes up for Mut having little identity outside of his relationship to Rake, or the terrible arc that Mook and Vie are having, over the last few weeks. I have been playing Stomp for the last few hours because I needed them to kick that man. Mut did not hit him enough.
New Shows
There's a bunch of stuff I have to sort out over the next few days. I'm not going back to My Love Mix Up TH, but I do plan to start 4 Minutes. There's also another J-BL in the grey I got some help finding called Sugar Dog Life.
Shout out to @lurkingshan for helping me watch a few things while I was gone, and also @twig-tea for keeping me apprised of which new shows I probably need to pick up.

Thank you @isaksbestpillow for subbing this amazing show!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It now joins the other Japanese BLs about food (Old Fashion Cupcake, Our Dining Table, What Did You Eat Yesterday?) that are almost near perfect from beginning to end, and without your subs, I wouldn't have had the pleasure of experiencing it.

Appreciate it and you.

Mitsuya-sensei ep3: On Boundary Pushing
I realized that I forgot to write a post for this episode, which is unforgivable because this show just keeps getting better, and this episode DELIVERED!
Tumblr media
We got Mitsuya's ex showing up and taking all kinds of liberties, Mitsuya hilariously beating him off with a ladle, Ishida slowly processing the fact that Mitsuya has an ex that is hot, talented, famous, and most importantly: Mitsuya still seems to have some feelings for him (I love the scene where Ishida was watching Kaoru's footage at work, and how his memory and imagination cut in to the generic footage. The salt bag leaking at the end?! That's cinema).
Tumblr media
We got to watch Shige barely keep it together as he listened to and advised Ishida (very relatable). I appreciated that we got to see Mitsuya introduce Ishida to Shige in ep2, so that we knew Shige was aware of their friendship. He already had a sense of what was going on between them just by seeing them together, and he also had a sense of how much Mitsuya already trusted Ishida through that interaction. It's so important that Ishida had someone to go to who he could talk about his growing awareness of his feelings with, and while Shige should not have given Ishida Mitsuya's history with Kaoru, I keep thinking about how different these circumstances are to Ayaka-chan wa Hiroko-sempai ni kishiteru. I do appreciate that Ishida's first instinct is to go to Mitsuya and confirm.
Tumblr media
I love the way this show has both Kaoru and Ishida show up to Mitsuya's house unannounced, but in very different ways. Kaoru lets himself in, makes mediocre food (after previously asking to be fed and being rejected), refuses to leave when asked, asks Mitsuya to upend his life for him without expressing any vulnerability of his own, and then physically tries to force closeness with Mitsuya (who literally tosses him to the curb). Ishida in contrast shows up but stops outside the house, apologizes for overstepping by even being there, does not ask to be let in, makes sure he's invited before he does come in, asks for food only when he's invited to, asks Mitsuya what his plans are, and when Mitsuya refuses to answer, confesses his own feelings.
The way this show is using Kaoru as a foil for Ishida is excellent, to highlight the differences in how they press Mitsuya's boundaries, is excellent. I particularly love the contrast at the end of each confrontation, and how when pressed Kaoru goes for forced physical proximity, and reminding Mitsuya of his own emotional vulnerability ("I'll wait for you as long as you waited for me") while Ishida reveals his own vulnerability "I like you") and remains physically distant (with the table between them) while making a claim on Mitsuya's feelings about moving to Paris. Just the fact that Ishida asked Mitsuya if he wants to go, rather than Kaoru asking him to go without asking him how he felt about it, speaks dissertations about how these two men relate to Mitsuya. Very excited to see how this plays out over the coming weeks.
Thanks again to @isaksbestpillow for her generosity in subbing this series!

Tumblr media
I'm watching too much stuff. And things are not slowing down with all the things coming in September. So I'm gonna try and keep this short. As much as that's possible given the amount of shows.
QL - Currently Watching
🇹🇭 4 Minutes [6/8] - Finally some answers. I haven't read all the theories floating around about this last episode and what it means, but I'm firmly on the side of, there is another alternative timeline, probably from when Tyme is dying at the start of the show, and also very much in agreement with everything @lurkingshan wrote here that these are just imagined do-overs and nothing will actually change in the real world. Which would be my preferred way.
🇹🇭 Addicted Heroin [2/10] - Haven't watched this weeks episode yet. My review for the first two is here.
🇹🇼 First Note of Love [4/12] - I like them a lot. And I like the pacing of this. I love the intro song. But with a second couple being introduced I think I'm gonna get frustrated having to wait a week for a 20 minute episode. I felt that way a lot during Kiseki.
🇯🇵 I Hear the Sunspot [10/12] - I am annoyed.
🇹🇭 I Saw You In My Dream [7/12] - May the boyfriend era commence. I am enjoying this one. I'm guessing we still have a bit of angst coming and I'm hoping for a good explanation for the dreams.
🇯🇵 Mitsuya Sensei no Keikakutekina Ezuke [6/7] - Just such an incredible show. This week brought the pain and I'm still unwell. As if Frito getting sick wasn't heart breaking enough, that ending left me in tears. I cannot believe we only have one episode left. I am not ready to say goodbye to the three of them.
🇹🇭 Monster Next Door [6/12] - My favourite thing about this is definitely Big. His presence on screen is great. But I'm not fully connecting yet for some reason.
🇹🇭 Peaceful Property [1/10] - It's a lot of fun. Yeah, I know it's not a bl. But it's bl adjacent so it goes here. Also in my head it's gonna be a bl no matter what. Possibly even with a gl side couple. The mind is a powerful thing.
🇯🇵Sugar Dog Life [4/10] - I love Isumi. I really liked that they didn't drag the girl storyline and it served it's purpose. Isumi is now very much aware of it's feelings. I'm looking forward to the date episode.
🇯🇵 Takara No Vidro [9/11] - Takara, my love. This boy has my whole heart. I can't believe I'll have to say goodbye to then tomorrow. I'm bracing for part pain, part happy. Please Japan don't let me down.
🇹🇭 The Loyal Pin [1/16] - I'm waiting to binge.
🇹🇼 The On1y One [4/10] - This show will hurt and I will love every second of it. I really like the look of this show and how we get those little insights into Jiang at the end of the episode. The actors are doing great and I specially love Benjamin Tsang facial expressions. I'm curious to see these two together and how their dynamic will work considering their circumstances. Also, always happy to see the revolving door of cameos Taiwan always grace us with.
🇯🇵Twilight Out of Focus - It's so beautiful. I'm enjoying that we get different couples even if sometimes it feels like we could have more time with them. I like Rei/Shion a lot, but I do miss Mao and Hisashi. 🇹🇭 The Trainee [10/12] - Just to get it out if the way, the Bamhee/Judy storyline was definitely the right call and @lurkingshan was right all along. Also the way the office came together was delightful and it's great to see Pah getting everyone together and once again being the best friend ever. Now. THE OFFICE FLIRTING!!! I was losing my mind giggling like an idiot. I love them. It's pretty obvious at this point that it's mutual and of course Ryan will need to actually be told that, but I still think Jane will wait until the internship is over before confessing or starting anything official. I can't wait to watch all the interns reaction next week. I love it here.
QL - Finished
🇯🇵 Ayaka is in Love with Hiroko! - I'm disappointed in this one. It started off so strong but by the end it lost me. I love Hiroko but I feel like they betrayed the character. And that ending with the kiss in the office was ridiculous. Actually most of the end was weird in the way that it seemed to contradict what came before. I like that they finally got together but it didn't feel as good as it could've.
🇹🇭 Century of Love - Started of great and imo fell apart by the end. I don't think it was consistent all the way through and the mythology was all over the place. Daou did an amazing job though. Also Ju is one of the greatest female characters of the year.
🇯🇵 Cosmetic Playlover - Pretty show. Final thoughts here.
🇹🇭 Knock Knock, Boys! - Probably the biggest surprise of the year for me. It's great. I like the development of both couples. Even if near the end I got a tiny bit annoyed with Peak, I really liked the conclusion of it all. Latte is a great character and the very rare slut unjudged by the narrative.
🇹🇭🇨🇳 Meet You At the Blossom - Look it's great that we got a chinese bl, but this was not it for me. Let's hope this one helps get others made though.
🇹🇭Love Sea - It was fine. I enjoyed Mut but in general I just never connected to this show. And Muk annoyed me to no end. I was so happy to see Aya again and now I just wanna forget that she was ever in this and simply remember her as Yiwa.
🇹🇭 SunsetxVibes - I don't even have words. I don't know if it was my lack of attention or if it never actually made sense but I never really got what the mythology was all about apart from inspiring a truly horrendous looking necklace. I was slogging though this one and I guess the finale was fine.
🇹🇭 This Love Doesn't Have Long Beans - The sides were great, their chemistry was on point. I really wanna see them again. The mains were my favourite thing about Pit Babe but I just didn't like them here.
🇹🇭 The Rebound - I just have to accept that MeenPing will always have bad scripts. They are pretty together but this was a mess.

I really do like this exchange between Ishida and Mitsuya-sensei. I guess, for an old gay chef living in a conservative country like Japan, watching those judgmental assholes who try to minimise Mitsuya's life's work (and failing) is truly majestic.

Mr. Mitsuya's Planned Feeding: I Am Obsessed With Shige
I've only had him for two episodes, but I am thriving. I love a gay gossip that meddles right in front of you. He clocked Ishida in episode 2, and asked him about his life to get him to open up. He was clearly thrilled when Ishida showed up to angst about Mitsuya, and he spilled that tea so fast. Mitsuya knew immediately that it was Shige.
I'm having so much fun with this show. Mitsuya's ex showed up this week, and it's giving us an opportunity to see a long term gay breakup. Mitsuya's clearly got complicated feelings for his ex, but he is most assuredly trying not to fall back into that orbit. I'm so excited to see how Ishida's confession plays out next week.

I'm not over it!
Ishida openly stating that he wanted to do something more than just hug Mitsuya, but he didn't want to take advantage of the situation has been replaying in my head all day.
Tumblr media
Ishida admitted his family is affectionate, so the fact that he has held himself back from touching Mitsuya, from comforting Mitsuya, from holding Mitsuya for so long until the exact moment he no longer could has been replaying in my head all day.
Tumblr media
And it's because Ishida asked Mitsuya if he saw him as an adorable boy or as a man because he needs Mitsuya to see him as a man, so Mitsuya's immediate defense is to reject Ishida by calling him a kid.
Tumblr media
Then he brings up Ishida's dating history.
Tumblr media
Mitsuya is saying this with a hint of sorrow, but all of this is actually very cruel!
Tumblr media
He knows Ishida likes him. Ishida has made that clear. He knows Ishida likes him even in a very physical sense. Ishida just made that clear. So for Mitsuya to immediately tell Ishida he is a "good kid" who he implies is just going through a phase is hurtful, AND HE KEEPS GOING!
Tumblr media
Mitsuya offers up solid reasons for them not to go further: society's views on their age difference. Yet Mitsuya does not frame it that way. He starts with "if I had a son like you." He is, once again, establishing Ishida is a child, and even more insulting, he is making Ishida *his* child, which quickly diminishes any other type of relationship existing between them.
Tumblr media
Mitsuya isn't just rejecting Ishida, he is pushing him away by drawing a deep line based on Ishida's insecurity. They can never work because Mitsuya is an old man, and Ishida is a child.
Tumblr media
The only time Mitsuya's fully looks Ishida in his face throughout this entire scene is when he tells Ishida he cannot come there anymore.
Tumblr media
He holds himself for the rest of his delivery as his arms act as a stand-in for Ishida's hug, but they can't replace the warmth that Ishida gives. And Mitsuya's know that.
Tumblr media
Mitsuya called Ishida. Mitsuya wanted Ishida to be there. Mitsuya didn't want Ishida to leave. But now faced with Ishida's physical desire for him, Mitsuya lashes out. It doesn't feel that way at first. It comes across that Mitsuya is thinking of Ishida and his future, but Mitsuya is afraid. His desire for Ishida to be in his life scares him. This is Mitsuya's problem.
Tumblr media
This whole episode has been about Frito, but it isn't about Frito. Not really.
Tumblr media
Mitsuya has stated he was reckless with other men's hearts, and Mitsuya got Frito as a distraction after his heart was broken. As much as his last relationship hurt him, Mitsuya never experienced love until he got Frito. At least not at this level. He stated that he could live happily for the rest of his life in that house with Frito and nothing else.
Tumblr media
But, again, this isn't really about Frito. Ishida was a distraction like all the editors and guests who come to Mitsuya's house. He makes them food, and they leave, but somehow, Ishida was different.
Tumblr media
And now Mitsuya wants Ishida around. He worries about him. He thinks about him. He needs him. And that is too much for Mitsuya because what would he do if he lost Ishida? If his last breakup was bad even with all the turmoil, imagine how bad this soft and kind love would hurt? If he feels this way now, how would he feel after a few months or even years? What would he do if he lost Ishida after giving him his heart?
So he doesn't. He turns his back to Ishida. He throws subtle insults. He stops it before it starts.
Tumblr media
And the camera lingers.
Tumblr media
I truly thought Ishida would walk back in because the camera made me believe he would.
But he didn't.
Mitsuya dismissed him, and like a good kid, Ishida did as he was told.
Which is why for the first time in a long time, I need to see a Japanese BL boy run toward his heart. Ishida respects Mitsuya which is why he left, but Ishida also proved Mitsuya right. Ishida will do as he is told. If Ishida's family disapproves, he will do as he is told. If society tells Ishida this isn't right, he will do as he is told. Ishida continued baseball even when he knew he no longer loved it because his family had put so much into his dream. Ishida is a good kid who always thinks of others before he thinks about himself. He even told Mitsuya to go to Paris if that would make him happy when it would have destroyed Ishida.
So it's time for Ishida to be a man and follow his heart. He began this journey by transferring into the sports editor position. He hugged Mitsuya even when Mitsuya told him to stop. And now he needs to run after Mitsuya even though Mitsuya is pushing him away.
Tumblr media
Noguchi, climbing through windows and over walls and sneaking through doors, makes sense now.
Tumblr media
Shige said Mitsuya was always like this, useless in romance. Mitsuya puts up walls that men have to climb. He closes doors that men have to open. And he shuts off his heart.
Tumblr media
So Ishida needs to be a man and stay even when he is told to go instead of an obedient child who leaves.
Tumblr media
Ishida needs to keep going even when he is told to give up.
Tumblr media
Frito made Mitsuya into the adult he is today by teaching him how to care for others, but Ishida is going to make Mitsuya understand what it means to be cared for.
Tumblr media
Ishida will be a great partner because he will be the man who runs home to the guy he loves.
Tumblr media
But, first, he has to stop being such a damn good kid.

Mitsuya-sensei ep2: We're in it now
I am absolutely obsessed with the dynamic between Ishida and Mitsuya in this show. Ishida is a ball of self-sabotaging anxiety and uncertainty, and it makes perfect sense that he'd be attracted to Mitsuya's quiet calm confidence. Mitsuya seems mostly amused by Ishida's excitement and unabashed pleasure when he eats; Mitsuya also seems a little tired, and drawn to Ishida's energy. I think he enjoys fucking with Ishida a little, too. The way neither of them wanted to stop hanging out in today's episode was lovely and so familiar.
Tumblr media
I'm so grateful this show continues to be so much gayer than I thought it was going to be; I loved Mitsuya taking Ishida to his favourite restaraunt run by the visibly gay Shige (my new favourite) and joking about making homophobes crumble at the taste of his food, and about Ishida being his boyfriend. I also loved Ishida joking about how they look like father and son (sir, this is a terrible way to flirt with your crush!) and refusing the leftovers from Mitsuya's meal with the other editor.
Tumblr media
Getting the confirmation that Ishida's already well aware of his feelings was such a relief. I'm excited to learn more about the past Mitsuya is hiding, and see how/if Ishida tries to pursue his feelings at all next week.
Thank you again to @isaksbestpillow for translating and sharing her excellent subtitles for this show!
