There is a hierarchy of languages [in Morocco]: written languages are conferred a higher status than spoken languages, which confirms the earlier discussed diglossic relation between Standard Arabic and Darija. However, in Morocco an atmosphere has emerged in which a plea for Darija is by many people considered a plea against Standard Arabic, and consequently against Islam and the Arab nation (Ziamari and de Ruiter, 2016; see also Gago Gómez in this volume).

[...] Darija is the language that most Moroccans speak when they talk to each other but [...] it does not enjoy the status of national language. Darija allegedly lacks any form of status or prestige. Darija is being undervalued and thus Moroccans not only underestimate the importance of their mother tongue, but of themselves too. In education, Darija could play an important role as a language of instruction, but officially this is not allowed.

The creation of Nichane marked an important phase in the emancipation of Darija, since it represented a breach of the old boundaries in which Standard Arabic was exclusively used for written purposes and the use of Darija was limited to the spoken domain. [...]

Another step forward is Darija being used as a language of cultural creativity, and the emergence of a ‘Darija generation’ (term used by Caubet, 2006), predominantly in Casablanca and other big cities in Morocco where artists express themselves in Darija both orally and in [writing]. [...] Foreign soap series are dubbed in Darija (Ziamari and Barontini, 2013) and many programs are now using a language variety that was considered inappropriate before this development started. In publicity and marketing Darija has become a real competitor for Standard Arabic (Ziamari and de Ruiter, 2016). The factual Moroccan linguistic landscape is now characterized by billboards using written Darija [...] (Hoogland, 2013). Ziamari and de Ruiter (2016:458) conclude with the remark that the linguistic changes in Morocco are coming from the bottom up and that these changes are redefining the linguistic borders between what is official and what is not. The linguistic reality in Morocco is moving in a direction of enforcing vernacular language practices.

Gazing back through history is every bit as viable a strategy in jazz as is pushing forward. But whenever musicians deal with history, it’s fair to ask what they’re bringing to the table, especially when they’re dealing with a subject as oft-investigated as Thelonious Monk. 

In the case of this Chicago-meets-Amsterdam quartet, which went on to claim the name of this record as its own sometime between the date of the recording session (April 29, 2016) and its ultimate release in August 2022, Monk’s material multitasks. The way they amplify Monk’s potential for rhythmic clunkiness on “Epistrophy” is not only an opportunity to take to task every slick session that’s smoothed out the master’s eccentricities, but also an opportunity to celebrate the wooden shoe timing of noted Monk afficionado and ICP Orchestra founder Misha Mengelberg. When this record was made, Hoogland, whose 1983 birthday makes him the youngest guy in the band, seemed a likely candidate to inherent Mengelberg’s prankster-genius mantle. While he’s since proved too restless to stick to jazz, his approach to “Bemsha Swing” shows why he could have done the job. He and drummer Mikel Patrick Avery show an acrobatic team’s aplomb as they exaggerate the tune’s jagged cadence into a lurching, airborne spectacle.

Monk’s music is also simultaneously challenging and a kind of lingua franca, which is a handy thing to draw upon when your band’s members have complicated schedules and far-flung addresses, but don’t want to just cruise their way through some simple tunes. The melodies that Keefe Jackson’s tenor saxophone navigates on “Epistrophy” amount to a 3-D chess abstraction of lines that are already way more jagged than you might remember them to be. And Joshua Abrams’ bass hops through the trickiest parts of “Bemsha Swing” like a jiujitsu-trained ballet dancer skipping from one lily pad to the next, crossing the pond without once wetting his feet. 

All this attention paid to the Monk material should not be interpreted as shade cast upon the record’s other four performances. The way they saunter and lurch through Herbie Nichols’ martial “The Happenings” is so broad and sure-footed, one suspects that they must be trying to hide something with big smiles. The rises and falls of Dewey Redman’s “Gotta Get Some Sleep” are so fitful, it’s an honorary Monk tune. And Hoogland’s two contributions stand tall in lofty company. “Wimpel” covers a lot of ground in a short time, starting out romantic, turning abstract, then coming back with double ardor. And the antic zigzags of “Aanhanguis” will have you grabbing the sides of your chair just to keep from falling off. One caveat — this album lasts just 22 minutes, and you may find yourself wishing there were 22 more. But the choice to cut the LP at 45 RPM brings out the best in a very good sound.

Several publications on the difficulties [faced by Moroccan journal Nichane], seizures by the authorities, legal proceedings and the like have appeared both in print and on the Internet. [...] One particular case deserves mention here: the so-called Darija legal process. In his editorial of 4 August 2007, Benchemsi directly addressed King Mohammed VI by asking what the king had precisely meant in a royal speech about the upcoming elections. Benchemsi uses Darija to address the king about the content of that speech, and also paraphrases in Darija a number of fragments from the royal speech, which of course had been delivered in Standard Arabic. After the publication of this editorial, Benchemsi was arrested and held in custody for questioning. Official charges were never brought, nor did a lawsuit ensue. According to Benchemsi, his arrest and questioning became the inaugural act of a national debate: what place to grant the mother tongue of Moroccans in relation to Standard Arabic, one of their official two languages. Nichane suddenly and unexpectedly stopped appearing in 2010, with the last issue, 268, coming out on 1 October 2010. According to Benschemsi in an editorial in TelQuel 442, this was allegedly the result of a financial boycott by big advertisers closely related to the political regime.

DRENTHE OP ZIEN MOOIST, VEUR GIENIEN MEER VERBÖRGEN

Was het de armste provincie van Nederland, een achtergebleven gebied? Een geïsoleerde landstreek waarvan de woeste gronden langzaam aan werden ontgonnen in verschillende kolonisatieprojecten. In de veenkoloniën werd het land ontgonnen, afgegraven en gecultiveerd. Daardoor ontstonden fraaie uitzichten, weidse blikken en intieme plekken. Drenthe werd bij uitstek een gebied voor kuddes schapen die de heidevelden grasloos houden. Doordat het minder in trek was voor industrialisatie bleef het enigszins achter in de financiële weelde die het westen van Nederland kent. Maar wel is het daarom nu een rijke provincie wat betreft natuur en landschap, flora en fauna. Het is er goed toeven en  toeren, per auto of op de fiets. En ook is het best wandelen over de heide en door het bos. Toeristen en dagjesmensen die van betrekkelijke rust houden en de schoonheid van de natuur weten te waarderen vinden Drenthe. De tijd lijkt er stil gezet. Natuurlijk gaat de Drentse bevolking mee in de vaart der volkeren. Maar laat ruimte voor de natuur. Mens en dier kunnen hier goed samen en naast elkaar leven. Niet ieder ongerept stukje natuur of braakliggend terrein wordt opgevuld met stenen en staal. De natuur kan de gang gaan zonder al te veel sturing van de mens.

Voor de fotograaf is het bij uitstek een wonderschone omgeving. Ook de meest tot de verbeelding sprekende allochtoon vond dat. Om zijn techniek in het schilderen van landschappen en figuren te toetsen verbleef Vincent van Gogh drie maanden op aanwijzing en voorspraak van zijn vrienden in de deze provincie. Hij had oog voor de schoonheid van het landschap, maar zag ook de armoede langs veen en op de heide. Drenthe inspireert kunstenaars. En Drenthe is fotogeniek. Het landschap is karakteristiek voor de romantische inborst van de natuur. Landstreken liggen er uitgestrekt bij, als een fotomodel op een sofa. Plaatjes schieten heeft altijd succes, want iedere compositie is telkens goed geschoten. Maar zoals Karin Broekhuijsen de omgeving ziet en vastlegt is toch ongekend. Natuurlijk, voor diverse platen hoef je alleen maar de lens te ontspannen, maar dan wel op het juiste moment en de meest geschikte plek. De landerijen en bosjes, heidevelden en vennen, zijn van nature al van een weelderige luister. Je wordt er als vanzelf lyrisch van, maar een open blik en een trefzeker inzicht verhogen de sfeer.

Het platenboek DRENTHE stelt zichzelf voor met Drentse poëzie van Martijje. Het omschrijft waar het in dit boek om draait: "Kom en kiek met mij, 'k loat je 't zien deur mien ogen". Ik kijk met fotograaf Broekhuijsen door haar lens en zie alle kanten van haar provincie. Niet alleen wandelt zij over de velden en door de bossen, ook laat ze de menselijke bedrijvigheid van stad en land zien. Maar wel telkens met eenzelfde uitstraling. Overgoten met een bepaalde heimwee naar hoe het was en Drenthe nog altijd is. Ze noemen Karin Broekhuijsen de fotografische chroniqueur van Drenthe. Haar leven en werken is deze provincie. Voor dag en dauw gaat ze op pad om de mensen te ontwijken en de ongerepte natuur vast te leggen. Die tijd van de dag is af te zien aan meerdere van haar foto's, de nevel trekt over water en strekt zich uit langs het veld. In die voelbare rust ontdekt ze van alles door haar lens en komt ze parels in de omgeving tegen. De arend met muis in volle vlucht, de reiger bij hooglanders, de spiedende kikkerogen en gespitste eekhoornoren. Het zijn kersen op de taart. 

Broekhuijsen laat de pracht en praal van natuurlijk Drenthe zien. Maar sluit de ogen niet voor de menselijke bezigheden. De dieren op het land, de fietsers over de paden, het open luchtspel, radiotelescopen, snelwegen, het paasvuur, de kalkovens. Ze stapt over de drempel van het museum over striptekenaar Jan Kruis, bekijkt het onkuise interieur van de muzikale boerderij van Harry Muskee, ziet de nostalgisch bevroren oudheid in het dorp Orvelte. Ieder facet wordt in deze uitgave bekeken. En beschreven, want elk hoofdstuk, ieder thema in de provincie, kent een inleiding op de verzamelde afbeeldingen. Robuust en origineel, Bij de tijd en authentiek, Ruimteluisteren en roofvogels - zo maar wat titels uit het boek. Een voorwoord van gedeputeerde Henk Brink en tekstuele vertalingen naar de Engelse taal en de Duitse spraak maken van het boek een toeristische folder voor de provincie. Het is bijna te mooi om waar te zijn, maar kijk zelf maar het is zoals het is. De hunebedden, de schapen, de heide, het ven, de bospaden. In alle jaargetijden. De kou van de winter, de groei in de lente, de bloei van de zomer en de hemelse kleuren in de herfst. De winterse dauw zet zich van de kou vast als rijp op struik en tak, gras en verdorde bloem. De zomerse nevel wordt al snel verdrongen door het zonlicht dat snel de hemel beklimt.

Eigenlijk zijn voorjaar en najaar bij uitstek de seizoenen om dat schilderachtige schemerlicht te pakken. Voordat de mist zich terugtrekt in de walkant, de natuur nog rust ademt. De atmosfeer in afwachting is van de dag. Het komt allemaal voorbij. En nergens staat de zon hoog aan de hemel. Steeds is de sfeer van vroeg in de morgen en laat op de avond gepakt. Het interval van nacht naar dag, licht naar donker. Waarin het licht de natuur betoverd, de schemer zorgt voor geheimzinnigheid. En doorbreekt de mens dan deze rust, dan blijft de sfeer in de platen van Broekhuijsen gemoedelijk. Alles kan naast elkaar leven daar in Drenthe. En de fotograaf weet het juiste moment op de specifieke plek te vinden. Onbekende plekjes, geheimzinnige plaatsen, waaraan ik zomaar voorbij ga zonder ze te zien of op te merken. Broekhuijsen leert mij het onderbelichte Drenthe kennen.

Is er sprake van hightech,  dan omhult nevel de scherpe kantjes. Drenthe heeft geen scherpe kantjes, alles is er rond in figuurlijke zin. Een prachtig boek, kortom, voor de Drent die zijn eigen provincie maar al te goed kent, zeker voor de Nederlander die de landstreken wil verkennen en uitgelezen voor de mensen van verder weg om de schoonheid van hier te beleven. De uitgave is karakteristiek gebonden in een omslag met de paarse kleur van heide. Paars, de kleur tussen warm rood en koud blauw tegenover oplichtend geel. Drenthe heeft het, allemaal. Het zit in de genen van de provincie. Het DNA is paars. Want wie aan Drenthe denkt ziet schapen op het heideveld. Daar waar het leven (nog) goed is.
