🇺🇲 On June 25, 1956, the last Packard rolled off the production line in Detroit.
🚘 Once a leading luxury car manufacturer, the Packard Motor Car Company was renowned for its square bodies and hand-finished expertise. However, after World War I, General Motors' entry into the luxury market with Cadillac began to erode Packard's market share.
🏭 In a bid to survive, Packard merged with the Studebaker Corporation in the 1950s. Despite these efforts, the struggle continued. James Nance, president of Studebaker-Packard at the time, decided to cease Packard manufacturing in Detroit.
💔 Studebaker-Packard continued to produce cars in Indiana until 1958, but the last “true Packard” is considered to be the one made in Detroit.

10 Forgotten Muscle Cars That Deserve to Be Restored
by James Derek Sapienza
Source: General Motors We all know the story; it started in 1964 with the Ford Mustang. No, wait — I mean the Plymouth Barracuda. Or the Pontiac GTO. Or was it earlier with the Pontiac Catalina SD? The ’50s Dodge D-500 maybe? Debating the origin of the muscle car is like debating over the first rock and roll record; everyone you talk to has a different opinion, and no one is exactly wrong. Let’s just say that by the early ’60s, a generation coming of age fell in love with high-performance midsize cars coming out of Detroit, and for a few brief years, performance ruled the day. Naturally, the good old days seem to look better with each passing year, and as the book was written on the muscle car, a fair amount of contenders fell by the wayside.
Tumblr media
1. 1964 Studebaker Avanti R3
Source: Auctions America The Avanti isn’t generally counted among muscle cars, but then, Studebaker was never exactly considered a performance powerhouse to begin with. But the fiberglass Avanti had a long hood, short rear deck, and 289-cubic-inch V8 a full two years before the Ford Mustang did. In 1964 (after production officially ended), Studebaker bored out nine V8s to 304 cubic inches, slapped a Paxton supercharger on them, and dropped them into remaining Avantis. The result was a 171-mile-per-hour rocket, which the company claimed made it the fastest production car in America. This R3 was sold by Auctions America in 2010 for $96,250. With the collector market being what it is today, good luck finding one this cheap ever again.
Tumblr media
2. 1965 Pontiac 2+2
Source: General Motors As far as classic muscle cars go, the ’65-’67 GTO is remembered to be about as big as they came. But with the success of the GTO, Pontiac wanted to take its go-fast formula to an even bigger car, which became the ’65-’67 2+2. Based on the full-size Catalina two-door, the 2+2 had its own unique 338-horsepower 421-cubic-inch V8, and in High Output guise, power jumped to 376 ponies, which when tuned right could rocket from zero to 60 in a mind-bending 3.9 seconds. Bigger, plusher, and often faster than its smaller stablemate, the 2+2 deserves a lot more love from speed freaks.
Tumblr media
3. 1964 Mercury Comet Cyclone
Source: Ford For ’60s Ford products, the Mercury Comet was about as basic as they came. Closely based on the Ford Falcon, the ’64-’65 Comet could be livened up with Ford’s famous 289-cubic-inch V8. But for those who wanted more from their Mercurys, Ford built 50 Comet Cyclones for the dragstrip, complete with fiberglass hood, fenders, doors and front bumper, plexiglass windows, and the same 425-horsepower 427 V8 found in the Shelby Cobra. In ’66, Mercury introduced the production Comet GT with the 390 V8, and while they’re capable compact muscle cars, they couldn’t hope to match the insanity of their big block predecessor.
Tumblr media
4. 1968 Ford Ranchero 500
Source: Ford It’s been long overshadowed by Chevy’s iconic El Camino, but the Ford Ranchero was America’s first car-based Ute. And while Chevy was offering the 396 V8 in its muscle trucks, Ford upped the ante in ’68 and made its restyled Ranchero available with a 335-horsepower Cobra Jet 428 V8. Unfortunately, a lack of weight over the rear wheels made the hot Rancheros a handful to drive, so very few were built with Ford’s biggest motor. While it seems like every surviving El Camino happens to be an SS model, we can’t remember the last time we’ve seen a Cobra Jet Ranchero. Come to think of it, we can’t remember the last time we’ve seen any Ranchero.
Tumblr media
5. 1969 Chevy Kingswood 427
Source: General Motors Back in the ’60s, you could order virtually any option you wanted on a car, and companies would actually build it for you. So imagine you’ve got a growing family, and your Corvette just can’t handle them. What to do? Buy a Chevy Kingswood station wagon with Rally wheels, hideaway headlights, seating for seven, and the same 390-horsepower V8 found in your ‘Vette. Only 546 buyers opted for the big V8 in ’69, but a number of 427 Kingswoods spent the next decade making their mark on the drag strip.
Tumblr media
6. 1969 Oldsmobile Rallye 350
Source: General Motors When gearheads think of outrageous muscle cars from 1969, the Pontiac GTO Judge easily sits at the top of the list. But while the Judge has gone on to become a legend, Oldsmobile’s analog, the Rallye 350, is all but forgotten. Like the Judge (at least at first) it was offered in one outrageous color (Sebring Yellow), had color-matched wheels and bumpers, a spoiler, and a fiberglass hood. And compared to Olds’s top-dog 442, the car’s 310-horsepower 350-cubic-inch V8 made it significantly lighter, allowing it to scramble from zero to 60 in seven seconds and run the quarter mile in a respectable 15.27 seconds at 97 miles per hour. Just 3,500 Rallye 350s were built, making it one of the more obscure muscle cars to ever come from GM.
Tumblr media
7. 1969 Ford Torino Talladega
Source: Ford Half a century on, the Plymouth Roadrunner Superbird and Dodge Daytona get all the love when it comes to NASCAR homologation specials. But in 1969, Ford tried its hand at aerodynamics too and built the Torino Talladega. Starting with a Torino Sportsroof, Ford worked with the Holman-Moody race shop to design a sleeker, longer front clip and rear fascia for the car. The Talladega was honed in the wind tunnel — a relative novelty for the era — and powered by the 429-cubic-inch V8 found in the Boss Mustang. Production was over by March; Ford only built 754 of them and they were barely advertised, but the slippery cars dominated during the ’69 season, winning 29 races. In 1970, however, the 200-mile-per-hour Superbird ruled NASCAR, and the Talladega’s time in the spotlight was over. Today, the Talladega (and near-identical Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II) are bargains on the collector market compared to the beak-nosed Mopars.
Tumblr media
8. 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix SJ
Source: General Motors The second-generation Grand Prix is largely remembered for its role in popularizing the Personal Luxury Coupe segment, but in its early days, it was one of the hottest cars on the street. With a long hood (the longest hood of any production car in ’69, in fact) and short deck, the Grand Prix was available with Pontiac’s 390-horsepower 428-cubic-inch V8, allowing it to scramble from zero to 60 in 6.5 seconds and run the quarter mile in 15 seconds at 97 miles per hour. Its combination of luxury and power made it the Grand Prix massive hit for Pontiac; within a few years, any semblance of performance would be gone.
Tumblr media
9. 1970 Chrysler Hurst 300
Source: Fiat Chrysler Automobiles As early as 1970, Chrysler die-hards were feeling nostalgic for the 300-letter series, which ended in 1965. The 300-series carried on, but performance had taken a back seat as mid-sized muscle cars had picked up the go-fast mantle. Chrysler tried to recapture the magic for ’70 by outfitting a 300 coupe with the interior from an Imperial, a fiberglass hood and decklid, a 375-horsepower 440-cubic-inch V8, and a Torque-Flite automatic to handle all that power. At 18.5 feet long and 4,400 pounds, the big Chrysler could still make zero to 60 in 7.1 seconds and run the quarter mile in 15.3 seconds. With just 500 built, the Hurst 300s rank as one of the rarest Mopar muscle cars of all time.
Tumblr media
10. 1971 AMC SC/360 Hornet
Source: Chris Andrews Productions via YouTube In the ’60s, AMC’s red, white, and blue Rebel Machine and SC/Rambler muscle cars failed to move the sales needle for America’s last independent automaker, but they sure caused a scene wherever they went. For 1970, the company had introduced the compact Hornet and Gremlin to replace the Rambler, and with them came the SC/360 Hornet. With an available 285-horsepower 360-cubic-inch V8 under the hood, the small Hornet could hit 60 from a standstill in 6.7 seconds, and run the quarter mile in 14.9 seconds at 97 miles per hour. But in 1970, displacement still ruled the day, and despite being cheaper than a Plymouth Duster 340, AMC found just 784 buyers for its smallest muscle car. We think it’s aged remarkably well, and would love to take one of these ’70s-era sleepers to the drag strip.

Everything But Whiskey
flickr
Everything But Whiskey by James Marvin Phelps Via Flickr: Everything But Whiskey HD & LD Porter Mercantile Rhyolite, Nevada August 2024 In the bustling year of 1905, the Porter Brothers rolled into Rhyolite, Nevada, with 18 wagonloads of carefully selected goods from Randsburg, determined to make their mark on the burgeoning desert town. Their store, the HD & LD Porter Store, quickly became the heartbeat of Rhyolite, catering to the diverse needs of miners, settlers, and fortune-seekers alike. From fresh groceries and crisp vegetables to sturdy mining supplies, fashionable clothing, and even the finest Studebaker wagons, their store was a treasure trove of necessities and luxuries. Customers could even rent freight animals to haul their newfound purchases, all while admiring the brothers' cheeky slogan: "We handle all good things but whiskey." Their first store, a humble establishment on the corner of Main and Esmeralda, opened its doors in June 1905, but the brothers had grander ambitions. By November 1906, they unveiled a new, impressive one-story concrete building with a basement and expansive storefront windows on Golden Street, a structure that cost $10,000 to build on a lot they had purchased for $1,200.

We Didn't Start the Fire:

It's the End of the World as we Know It:
“It's in the title. The song is all about "the terrible change", so to speak, watching everyone and everything you know fall away. It's chaotic and fast, evoking the feeling of being trapped in a disaster. It may be cliché, but IMO, this is the definitive Extinction song.”

It's the End of the World as we Know It:
… That's great, it starts with an earthquake Birds and snakes, and aeroplanes And Lenny Bruce is not afraid
… Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn World serves its own needs Don't mis-serve your own needs Speed it up a notch, speed, grunt, no, strength The ladder starts to clatter With a fear of height, down, height Wire in a fire, represent the seven games And a government for hire and a combat site Left her, wasn't coming in a hurry With the Furies breathing down your neck
… Team by team, reporters baffled, trumped, tethered, cropped Look at that low plane, fine, then Uh oh, overflow, population, common group But it'll do, save yourself, serve yourself World serves its own needs, listen to your heart bleed Tell me with the Rapture and the reverent in the right, right You vitriolic, patriotic, slam fight, bright light Feeling pretty psyched
… It's the end of the world as we know it It's the end of the world as we know it It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine
… Six o'clock, T.V. hour, don't get caught in foreign tower Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself churn Lock him in uniform, book burning, bloodletting Every motive escalate, automotive incinerate Light a candle, light a motive, step down, step down Watch your heel crush, crush, uh oh This means no fear, cavalier, renegade and steering clear A tournament, a tournament, a tournament of lies Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline
… It's the end of the world as we know it (I had some time alone) It's the end of the world as we know it (I had some time alone) It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine (time I had some time alone) I feel fine (I feel fine)

Rave On, It's A Crazy Feeling
February 3rd, 2025 "And when the music plays, And when the words are touched with sorrow, When the music plays, I hear the sound I had to follow, Once upon a time…." The Moody Blues - In Your Wildest Dreams
From 1958 to 1960 Dick Clark's Saturday Night Beechnut T.V. show was broadcast weekly on ABC. 30 minutes of live performances of the top 10 songs of the week. On July 19, 1958 the show aired live from the Miami Beach Auditorium. The performers and songs on that show were: Duane Eddy - Rebel Rouser and Ramrod Jack Scott - My True Love Bobby Darin - Early In The Morning and Splish Splash George Hamilton IV - I know Where I'm Going The De John Sisters - Straighten Up And Fly Right
That Saturday afternoon, I'm sitting in a piece of crap car in a gas station 36 miles south in Homestead, Florida. We empty our jean's pockets and pool together a dollar, a quarter, a nickel or whatever we have in order to buy enough gas to get to Miami Beach - hoping there will be enough to get us back home.
I'm 15 years old. I'm in a car with 4 other testosterone fueled teens racing against life's wind.
Howling at the moon through the open windows, we hit the road. The rushing wind is so loud we have to crank the radio up to eleven.
The car fills with the rhythmic energy of a single bongo as a Bobby Freeman song fills the car.
Well, do ya wanna dance and-a hold my hand, Tell me I'm your lover man, Oh baby, do ya wanna dance….
As the song ends, I'm thinking, "That may be the greatest song ever!". Then proving me wrong, the radio's in between static is blasted clean out of the windows by Buddy Holly and the Crickets.
A-weh-uh-heh-uh-ell, The little things you say and do, Make me want to be with you-ah-hoo, A-Rave on, it's a crazy feeling and-a, I know it's got me reeling, When you say, I love you-hoo, rave on….
I light a Marlboro and lean back, arm out the rear window. Johnny Cool Breeze. "Tooling down the highway doing 79, I'm a twin pipe papa and I'm feelin' fine". "Lock up your daughters Miami!"
The telephone poles look like a picket fence as we fly past cars and continue flying north to meet rock 'n roll royalty in Miami Beach….
[Jack Scott in black jeans and a black leather jacket. Followed by Bobby Darin sitting in a bath tub belting, "Splish Splash I was takin' a bath…"]
"Top Of The World, Ma!"
Not long after we attended that show, my Air Force dad was transferred to Randolph AFB, Texas and I started my sophomore year at a local high school just outside of San Antonio.
7 months later. February 3, 1959: My 16th Birthday. THE day. Sweet Sixteen. Cars. Danger. Freedom. Pretty soon I'll have my drivers's license. Borrow my dad's Studebaker Silver Hawk. Pick up my girlfriend on a Saturday night. Roll down the driver's side window. Crank up the radio. Rev the engine a few times. Slam her into Drive and push the accelerator to the floor. Drive with my left hand 'cause my right arm would be casually draped James Dean Style across my girl friend's seat back. Next stop heaven.
(also known as the Starlight Drive-In.)

Schertz-Cibolo High School had an old weatherbeaten building and inside was a small funky room used as the Student Lounge. Worn out sofas and threadbare chairs competed for floor space with a well used juke box. The Student Lounge opened about an hour before Home Room and we would usually come early and hang out. Whenever there was enough floor space, we would dance.
Tumblr media
That Tuesday morning I punch a couple of buttons and select my favorite Larry William's song. The arm firmly grabs a 45 rpm and twirls it around and onto the turntable. I feel the anticipation build as the juke box's needle-on-vinyl-hiss introduces the song. I look around for someone to dance with.
I used to walk ya' home, baby, after school, Carry your books home, too, But now you got a boyfriend right down the street, Baby, what you tryin' to do? You better slow down….
I don't remember who I was dancing with when one of my buddies runs into the room, rushes over and taps me on the shoulder.
"HEY! BEANE! DID YOU HEAR?" "Hear what?" "BUDDY HOLLY JUST DIED IN A PLANE CRASH!"
The music keeps going but the dancing stops as the shock spreads around the room.
My memory isn't what it used to be but if I close my eyes I can still picture myself - in that room - in that moment.
Anguished girl's tears weren't uncommon that morning. Me and some buddies gathered in the gravel parking lot between classes, chain smoked and tried to make sense of it all.
Recently I was in the gym and listening to the greatest hits of Buddy Holly on Spotify. The rest of the morning I couldn't shake off the nostalgia….
Buddy and Elvis and Chuck and Jerry Lee and Fats infected America's youth like a rampaging virus.
But just as the fever peaked, our world and the music changed.
Our music went from Wake Up, Little Suzy, Good Golly Miss Molly and Johnny B. Goode - to - Blowin' In The Wind, Masters Of War and Eve Of Destruction… …all in less than 7 years.
We felt a little like reluctant time travelers swept into a future we didn't want.
Twelve years later, in the middle of the Vietnam War, Don Mclean was driven to write a song to pay homage to Buddy Holly and the music, and how the world had changed since that day.
I recently read that, "'American Pie’ spins a nine-minute story that juxtaposes feelings of teenage enthusiasm and invincibility with tragedy; interrupting a world defined by youthful pleasures and drama—homecoming, football, partying with friends - with the sober knowledge of time passing, Cold War-era paranoia, and coming to terms with one’s own mortality."
We were singin', bye-bye, Miss American Pie Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry Them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye And singin', "This'll be the day that I die This'll be the day that I die
That sounds like a lot of history and meaning to cram into one song about one era of music.
Even so, it leaves out what many of us felt - angst, innocence, rebelling, excitement, belonging, young love, alienation, yearning, idolatry, triumph, and, the sheer joy of being captured emotionally and physically by the rhythm, harmony and stories in that music.
For 2 minutes and 30 seconds the world ceased to exist outside of a 5 foot bubble containing only you, your partner and the music.
I can't remember if I cried, When I read about his widowed bride, But something touched me deep inside, The day the music died….
The Cricket's small rented plane couldn't carry all the members of the band so Ritchie Valens and Tommy Allsup flipped a coin for a seat on the plane.
Ritchie won.
Waylon Jennings gave up his seat to "The Big Bopper", who had the flu.
Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and "The Big Bopper" J. P. Richardson - along with their talent - died February 3rd sixty seven years ago on a cold, foggy, winter night in a lonely, frozen field near Clear Lake, Iowa.
I'm not sure what I miss most - him - them - the music - or just what was.
