James stared into the calm sea. Exhausted, however, remained determined to keep his eyes open. No one would sneak up on him or his crew, again. The seas were calm yet danger could lurk on the horizon patiently waiting to attack them.

"Why don't you let someone else keep watch for a while?" James refused to turn around. To take a glimpse at the real reason he'd become extra vigilante, so paranoid.

"I'm fine. Go back to bed. You need to rest." James was met with silence. He couldn't hear anything except the waves crashing into the boat while it glided across the ocean.

Creak.

"I thought I told you to go back to bed" James turned his neck taking a brief glimpse back at you.

"When have I ever enjoyed listening to orders?" James would usually find your attitude endearing, he enjoyed the way you kept him on his toes. However, you could have died today. He could have lost you today and it doesn't bear thinking about.

"Do not disobey your Captain!" James snarled, choosing to turn his body towards you. Your arm was wrapped close to your chest, your lip busted open, and the left side of your jaw had a fresh purple bruise covering it.

Failure. James had failed to protect the most precious and important person in his world. The person who kept his life threaded together. Unable to bear it any longer. James faced the stern once more. A hand slipped its way into his rough, calloused hand. How could someone so pure love someone like him? He was broken, cruel, ruthless and relentless. He did not deserve it.

Selfishly, he kept taking the love you were so willing to give. "You can't keep avoiding me-None of this was your fault. Life on the ocean is not easy. It's ruthless and dangerous; only the strong survive." One by one fingers entwined, delicate between calloused., calloused between delicate.

"I am the Captain of his ship. It's my duty to protect the crew-"

"James, you did protect the crew! Everyone is-" "You got shot! You could have died and it would have been my fault! Why do you constantly put yourself in harm's way to love me!" Teeth clenched, veins popped. To anyone else, Captain James Flint was one of the most ruthless pirates to sever sail the seven seas. To you,, he was James Flint, the man you loved. Yet without unlacing your hands, you stepped in front of the Captain. James looked away, unable to meet your gaze. "James look at me- look at me" James reluctantly glanced at you, momentarily before looking away. "Would you risk your life to protect me?" "Yes! I'd move the heaven and the earth to ensure your safety. Anyone who dared to hurt you would die slowly. Do you question my loyalty to you?" "No of course not. Why do you question why I would do the same? We are not young anymore. I knew of the risks when I agreed to sail the seas with you." Untangling your hand, James placed a tender hand on your cheek. "I do not know what I would do if I'd lost you" "You'd show everyone why it would be the biggest regret of their existence. Do not think about that now We're alive and we're together." James swept his arm underneath your legs, scooping you into his arms. Worry remained prominent in his mind and the next ship who dared to cross him would feel his wrath. He'd remind everyone why he obtained his reputation. No one would dare to dream about looking wrongly in your direction.

4/5 depending what counts as WIP. I've got a couple of southkane ones (which I'm entirely blaming you for 😋) a cutikaneson one and a doctor who one as well as a Brienne of Tarth brain worm I've got a few notes on.

🌝 Who is one character you haven’t yet written for that you would like to?

The one I'm most need to write for is Sarah Jane Smith (my beloved) from doctor who though that's who my WIP is about.

If it's someone I've genuinely written nothing about it's between Catelyn Stark from A song of ice and fire or James Flint from Black Sails.

If we're talking specifically football then I don't know. I have a few potential ideas involving van de ven so him I guess.

💻 Do you do research for your fics? What’s the deepest dive you’ve done?

I don't actually do a huge amount. Because I tend to write relatively short character based one shots I don't really need to research all that much. I write snapshots and moments really so my settings and the surrounding background info are vague. The deepest dive I've ever done currently is probably into Kane's early career. Having said that, one of my Southkane WIPs is a the affair gets exposed fic and I will do a lot more research for that then usual because I want it to be a lot more grounded in realism then most of my other fics.

Series: Another Troy to Burn

Way back in the day, before I had even finished watching Black Sails, I became totally convinced that Silver and Flint could have been fucking for the whole show and their dynamic would still work, and it wouldn’t necessarily change the outcome. That is the premise of this series. It is canon compliant perhaps to a fault, and evolves in many of the same ways as the show in terms of tone. As such - do not expect it to hurt any less. This is a love story. That does not mean it's happy.

This has now been my baby, my pride and joy for a couple years and I'm re-dedicating myself to finishing it. The first two parts are complete and work as a stand alone. A million thank yous to @jaynovz, who made this incredible moodboard and has been an indispensable support for all things writing. They also recorded podfics of Part One and Part Two, which I highly recommend, impeccable voice acting, they truly channel the boys.

You rolled your eyes, and James pinched your hip in rebuttal. It was weak. Too weak for your liking. James observed your mood intently, as he attempted to it up. Yet he was too weak, falling with a dramatic thud. Once more you attempted to get up and retrieve the bandages. James, however never backed down from a challenge as he pulled you toward him. Off guard, you tumbled into his arms, barely having time to catch yourself before you landed on top of him.

"I much prefer you in this position." James leaned up catching your lips against his as passionately as he could muster. You melted into James' touch your mind still focused on on not laying your body weight on top of his. "I hate it when you play dirty." You mumbled as James pulled away, smugness reflected in his blue eyes, pecking your lips in response. "Then give me what I want." "What you need is rest" Two unmoveable forces were facing each other, and you would retreat James moved forward. Neither one of you wanted to back down. "How about you let me attend to your wounds and in return, I'll spend the whole day with you." With his eyebrow cocked, you'd capture James attention. "All day?" Hello, best ask ever. Is this not the best ask ever? Because I feel it is the BEST ASK EVER. So! I feel it would go one of three ways?

Somehow we met at a bar and started drinking and talking about the ridiculous disaster bisexual men we are hopelessly in love with. (Mine was struck by lightning and lived and now loves math? Mine thinks I have power to control the weather and sometimes thinks he wants to kill me but then also can't live without me?)

Discussions about being repressed gays in the military. Or how being shot through the shoulder and almost dying really sucks but thankfully hot lovable husband was there to save me.

8. Common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about

I mean, I dunno that I would call this common so much as it is THE great debate in fandom and is pretty split, and that's whether or not Silver is lying at the end of the show about taking Flint to Thomas. So, did he, or is Flint dead? And I respect the other side's opinion on this, which I can't say for a lot of other fandom debates that I have deeply held opinions about because I'm petty, but the ending does leave itself open and it's meant to be like that. I have different friends with different thoughts and it's interesting to talk about it with them. However!! I firmly believe that Silver told the truth, and that is largely because if he shot Flint, then that's just, Flint AND James McGraw being dead. I'm obsessed with the concept of Silver UNMAKING Flint and leaving behind a tattered James McGraw at that farm with Thomas. I have other reasons, but this is one of the big ones.

9. Worst part of canon

Actively hard to pick with this show because I have not many critiques of it, but I don't like the becalming episode as much as other folks do? I get kind of bored during it. Most people agree that season 1 needed some work in places, but that's not salty cause we all agree (though! I will say once you see the whole show and go back and watch season 1 it actually really hits in a lot of places. Some GREAT monologues).

22. Your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores

Madi I mean I'm not being fair, Madi def gets love, but not as much as she OUGHT to. I think especially Madi and Flint's friendship doesn't get the focus it should. To me. It's why both my Black Sails fics are, indeed, this.

I've written a one shot where Abigail Ashe comes back to Nassau in Season 3. She watches, learns and reconciles the events of Seasons 3 and 4 before going her separate way again to settle in the colonies and keep a quieter resistance alive in the Deep South (I love Freedom Fighter Abigail theories and the lack of information post-Charles Town is an excellent playground). It explores Abby's mourning for her innocence, as well as her more complicated feelings towards pirates (Flint and Vane especially) in regards to both believing in their cause and being angry about what happened to her personally. From everything with Ned Lowe (and how she hates Vane for taking her, is grateful that he killed Lowe) to the death of Miranda (and her father's culpability in it) and finally to Flint's role in her father's rise and fall, it's a study of the grey area she inhabits. Mostly it focuses on various conversations between Abigail and Vane because they share one scene together but the way Abigail answers him with such an emphatic "good" in that cell despite being completely terrified of him compels me. That entire scene is so good, from the conversation about Lowe to the asking if Abigail's father loves her and the detached certainty of her answer that he'll pay and Vane's reactions to that having really only seen Eleanor and Richard's father-daughter relationship, it's just a very good scene.

A concept that also fascinates me that I've started playing around with is an AU where Vane and Miranda actually meet and how a chance stumbling upon one another turns into a personal power struggle between them where Miranda is bored and wants to push back against someone who's not Flint while Vane wants her to be afraid of him and is peeved it's not working. That one's more for the sheer fun of it because I had a vision in my head of Vane trying to play it cool across an afternoon tea setup with Miranda and failing miserably. Miranda is just having a good time ruffling feathers all around, including Flint's.

I also have a Pirates of the Caribbean and Black Sails crossover series that's a bunch of characters ruminating on one another (James Norrington on James McGraw and the scandal that caused in the Navy. Elizabeth Swann on Abigail Ashe and being the daughter of a governor involved with pirates, etc.) Basically it's a small collection of short, mostly canon compliant character studies that I'm having a ton of fun exploring.

Similarly, one that I've been writing for a long time but that will probably never see the light of day is a Black Sails and Game of Thrones crossover solely inspired by Tom Hopper being in both shows (for like 5 minutes in GoT). The basic backstory is that magic has been waking up for a long time and sometimes, people get caught in the crosshairs. Dickon Tarly is being sent to foster, his ship is caught in an awful storm that dumps them somewhere with different stars and they run afoul of an English vessel, resulting in Billy Bones being impressed and eventually leading him to Flint.

The story itself focuses on Billy Bones washing ashore back in Westeros instead of Skeleton Island and having to reconcile his life as a pirate and revolutionary with his childhood, and assumed birthright, as a powerful feudal lord. I lean a lot into the fantasy elements of ASoIaF, including long dormant magic waking up, the roles of gods versus the possibility that none exist and Euron's entire eldritch deal as he invades the Reach. Billy Bones comes back to a war-torn Westeros as someone jaded by the system of civilization that he's now thrust into the middle of. But Billy Bones cannot be what Westeros requires, Billy Bones is an agitator not lord. He may not have any ghosts chasing him here, but he has to reconcile two very different lives, build new alliances with war torn children of former enemies and navigate his father's ambitious plans all while trying to come to personal terms with the ramifications of his actions throughout Season 4. Also, you know, there's a madman destroying the Reach, ice zombies coming from the north, the capital is on fire and as Tyrells start dropping like flies, a lot of people are looking to him for answers he does not have, nor does he want to give.

Overall, this one's a silly premise that I'm having fun exploring and it's a very good visual of how I have changed and developed as a writer over the years.
