I find it interesting that this portrait of James II makes him look so calm and chill
Tumblr media
But then there are these other portraits of him, and they make him look determined and almost angry
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This isn't a criticism, just an observation

Decorative Sunday!
These beautiful engravings are from the first volume of The Antiquities of Athens by Scottish archeologist, architect and artist, James Stuart (1713-1788) and British artist and architect, Nicholas Revett (1720-1804), printed in London by John Haberkorn in 1762.
The Tower of the Winds is an octagonal marble clock tower in the Roman Agora of Athens. It was designed by Andronicus of Cyrrhus around 50 BC. It was a functional structure that contained sundials, a waterclock, and a wind vane. It is an ancient equivalent of a modern day meteorological station. The building became more widely known outside of Greece because of Stuart and Revett, who were among the first to document the antiquities and monuments of Athens in great architectural detail. Their work is noted for fueling the Greek Revival, an architectural movement in northern Europe, the United States, and Canada in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. When the first volume was published they had more than five hundred subscribers, mostly architects and builders.
The engravings were made by the British engraver James Basire (1730-1802), who specialized in prints depicting architecture. Artwork by Basire is held in museums throughout the world. He is also known for having the young William Blake (1757-1827) as an apprentice for seven years.
The well known artist William Hogarth (1697-1764) published a satirical print called The Five Orders of Periwigs in which he classifies the ridiculous wigs that were in fashion at the time into “orders” with greatly detailed measurements. This was a direct satire of Stuart and Revett’s work and similar work of which he said “It requires nor more skill to take the dimensions of a pillar or cornice, than to measure a square box.”
The tower’s frieze depicts the eight winds in bas-relief represented figuratively as gods, the Anemoi: Zephyrus, the West wind; Boreas, the North wind; Kaikias, the North East wind; Apeliotes, the East wind; Eurus, the South East wind; Notus, the South wind; Lips, the South West wind; and Sciron, the North West wind.

PORTRAIT OF JAMES STUART (1612 - 1655), FOURTH DUKE OF LENNOX AND FIRST DUKE OF RICHMOND, AS PARIS HOLDING AN APPLE
https://www.sothebys.com/en/buy/auction/2019/master-paintings-sculpture-day-sale/sir-anthony-van-dyck-and-studio-portrait-of-james
This portrait of James Stuart is one of two versions made by Van Dyck and his studio; the other is at the Musée du Louvre, Paris. While Larsen described our painting as a replica of the Louvre portrait, Barnes et al. accepted both as the work of Van Dyck and his studio under his direction (see Literature). Lennox appears here in the guise of Paris, the shepherd from Greek mythology tasked with awarding the golden apple to the fairest goddess.
Lennox attended Trinity College, Dublin and traveled the continent before being appointed Gentleman of the Bedchamber in 1625, knighted in 1630, and becoming a Privy Councillor in 1633. He was a close friend of King Charles I and supported the Royalist cause, lending the King large sums of money on two occasions. He was created Duke of Richmond in 1641 and was commissioner for the defense of Oxford 1644 - 46. He married Mary, daughter of George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham; their only son Esme died at age eleven.
Lennox sat for Van Dyck three times: the first portrait of Lennox and his dog, dated to 1633, is full length and commemorates Lennox's new status as Knight of the Garter (Metropolitan Museum, New York).1 A second, horizontal portrait of circa 1636 depicts Lennox seated with his beloved greyhound again (Kenwood House).2 The head and the top of his blouse with jeweled clasp were taken from the Kenwood portrait and reused for the present image. From the third sitting, Van Dyck painted a full-length portrait of Lennox in black (Earl of Leicester).3 Lennox's family was among Van Dyck's most important patrons; his siblings are also the subjects of celebrated portraits from Van Dyck's English period.

St Matthias’ Day
Tumblr media
James Radclyffe, Third Earl of Derwentwater. Source: Wikipedia
On this day in 1716, James Ratcliffe, the last Earl of Derwentwater was executed. His crime was to be one of the leading lights of the Jacobite Rebellion of the previous year (known to history as “The Fifteen”) which had begun in the Highlands of Scotland with the intent of overthrowing the Hanoverian King George I in favour of James Stuart, son of King James II who had been deposed in 1688. The rebels invaded England and succeeded in taking Preston, but the hoped-for rising of Stuart supporters in England failed to materialise and Derwentwater, along with many of the other rebel leaders, was captured by Hanoverian troops there.
Romance followed the story of Derwentwater after his death. Many ballads were written of his tragic demise and his wife, Lady Derwentwater, briefly escaped with the couple’s fortune by climbing the cliffs above the family seat in Derwentwater. On hearing of her husband’s execution (she blamed herself for encouraging him to join the Stuart insurrection), she threw the treasure into the lake, never to be seen again. Tradition also states that when Derwentwater was executed, the stream at Dilston Hall ran red, the river turned into a sea of serpents, and the sun shone red with blood. The Aurora Borealis may be the actual origin of this dramatic tale and the Northern Lights are still referred to in Cumbria as Lord Derwentwater’s Lights.
Today is also St Matthias’ Day, on which the last cold blast of winter takes place. Traditionally Matthias’ feast is characterised by freezing weather either on the day itself or sometime over the following week.
