Lords Vote
On: Social Fund Winter Fuel Payment Regulations 2024
Baroness Stedman-Scott moved that this House regrets (1) that the Social Fund Winter Fuel Payment Regulations 2024 (SI 2024/869), laid before the House on 22 August, will leave pensioners worse off in winter; (2) the decision to prioritise above-inflation pay rises for unionised public sector professionals over the needs of the elderly, including many households that are eligible for Pension Credit but do not claim it; and (3) the lack of transparency on these policy decisions during the election period. The House divided:
Ayes: 164 (87.8% Con, 4.9% XB, 3.0% DUP, 2.4% , 1.2% UUP, 0.6% Green) Noes: 132 (92.4% Lab, 6.1% XB, 0.8% , 0.8% Bshp) Absent: ~535

"TO SERVE 18 MONTHS FOR TEN BREAK-INS," Toronto Star. March 22, 1934. Page 26. --- Six Months Each to Pair for Receiving --- Brampton, March 22. - Thomas Beverly Brown, Port Credit, was sentenced to 18 months determinate and 12 months indeterminate in the Ontario reformatory by Magistrate Bull yesterday on ten counts of theft and house breaking in the south end of Peel county.
Edgar Bulman, Toronto, and Robert Brown, Port Credit, were found guilty on charges of receiving and sentenced to six months determinate and six months indeterminate.
Mrs. Gordon Brown, Port Credit, in her evidence, identified Bulman as the man who had called at her home, where Thomas Brown roomed, and taken him away in his car. This nocturnal motor trip tallied closely with the robbery at Charlie Falconer's Streetsville store. Mrs. Brown also swore that she had seen goods in Brown's room which had latter been identified by Mr. Falconer as his property.
Breeders' Conduct Banquet A large number attended the Peel Holstein Breeders' Association annual banquet last night. Dr. G. I. Christie, O.A.C., Guelph, was guest speaker.
At the concluding euchre last night of the Oddfellows' Hall Association, Mrs. Emerson Baldock. Mount Charles, won the grand prize for the series of three games. Harold Holbrook, Brampton, was second.
James Duncan, 62, Dies James Duncan, lifelong resident of Peel, died in the Peel Memorial hospital in his 63rd year. He was a member of Ebenezer United church and a Liberal. His wife predeceased him a year ago. Three sons, one daughter, two brothers and four sisters survive.

Pet peeve is when you look up a list of cities in Ontario by population or average income and it's like 1 toronto 2 scarboro 3 Mississauga 4 Oakville 5 Brampton. Like that's not just toronto. Ontario has like 5 cities idgaf what anybody says. From west to east: thunder bay (encapsulates north Ontario,) Windsor (I'm legitimately really sorry if you live here, move soon) toronto (the only reason Ontario deserves to exist) Kingston (for old people) and ottawa (allegedly important on paper but idk). Anything else and you should either live up near st james bay cause you don't like people or one of the listed cities. Basically fuck Mississauga

New documents reveal how a Brampton man conducted his operation and the steep prices he charged. U.S. authorities say Simranjit “Shally” Singh, a 40-year-old Indian citizen, conspired to move people over the border from Cornwall Island through Akwesasne Mohawk territory, which touches New York, Ontario and Quebec and straddles the St. Lawrence River.
On Wednesday, he pleaded not guilty to charges related to human smuggling in a federal U.S. court. “Singh has successfully moved illegal aliens northbound into Canada and southbound into the United States using the geographic vulnerabilities of the AMIR [Akwesasne Mohawk Indian Reservation]. Singh has been living in Canada illegally and has been able to elude law enforcement detection,” according to a request for provision arrest filed in a Brampton court by the U.S. Office.
It was the territory where two families died apparently trying to cross St. Lawrence recently, though authorities have not said there is any connection between the cases.
The accusations against Singh offer a rare look at how authorities say human smuggling networks operate and the steep prices they charge.
Some migrants told American law enforcement Singh charged between $5,000 and $35,000, the documents suggest, describing four “smuggling events.
In one event in March 2020, a person “CW-1” dropped three Indian citizens at the Great View Motel in New York, according to a request for provisional arrest filed in Brampton.
“I’m dropping them off at a safe space,” CW-1 crossed the river,” Singh responded. “Yes,” CW-1 replied. A video reveals CW-1’s car at the motel the three off.
Then, “CW-1 travelled to Cornwall to meet Singh, bring him bottles of liquor, and collect $4,000, which represented CW-1’s pay,” the request says.
But CW-1 was concerned the hotel had been rented in her name, and she returned to pick up the migrants. Border Patrol Agents saw her leaving the hotel and arrested all four in Fort Covington, New York.
In another case in March 2021, using the Akwesasne territory as a corridor, one migrant told law enforcement that “Singh bragged about smuggling over one thousand people and that CW-3 had nothing to worry about.”
Singh lost a refugee claim in Canada but couldn’t be deported without an Indian passport. His lawyers declined to comment to CTV News. Singh did not fight the extradition, though observers say fighting extradition to the U.S. can often be a tough battle.
“The bar is low. Even if a person is extradited, that doesn’t mean guilty. It just means that the requesting state has managed to meet that hurdle,” extradition lawyer James Bray told CTV News.
Singh was indicted in 2022 and was extradited to the U.S. last week. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison, the U.S. Attorney’s office said in a statement.
U.S. President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau agreed to a deal with asylum seekers coming to Canada through unofficial border crossings, a move critics said could mean refugees and migrants will take more risks when crossing.
Increased scrutiny at the border will drive more desperate people into expensive and risky schemes like the one Singh is accused of orchestrating, said Chris Ramsaroop of Justicia for Migrant Workers.
“We’re going to see more people put into perilous conditions,” he said. “These are strong deterrent measures that have a tremendous impact on the most vulnerable people,” Ramsaroop said.

The Art of Borrowed Scenery
Can we still enjoy our private gardens—our places and practices of retreat, beauty and joy—while people suffer and the world burns? #spirituality
A medieval hortus conclusus: The Little Garden of Paradise, Upper Rhenish Master (c. 1410). Outside, the mountains have been drawn into the garden, becoming a part of it. Aritomo was a master of shakkei, the art of Borrowed Scenery, taking elements and views from outside a garden and making them integral to his creation. — Tan Twan Eng , The Garden of Evening Mists [i] The Rev. Just your friendly Ontarian here, speaking up out of (likely misplaced and totally silly but whatever) frustration.
This was meant to just be a post clarifying where some hockeys are from and turned into like a really weird half-assed primer? I’m bored, sue me.
Context: Being from Ontario and getting my feet wet for the first time in Hockey Fandom as opposed to just being totally inundated in Hockey Culture my entire life has been strange for a number of reasons. First, because people outside of Canada don’t GET Canada. And second, growing up in Ontario means you have connections to NHL players. You just do. And it’s really weird for me to see stuff about the young hockeys who I have connections to because I literally know their families or friends or former teammates, etc. So I’ve been doing my best to stay in my hockeys-I-don’t-know-from-a-hole-in-the-ground-lane and zoom past all other content.
Problem: But what I haven’t been able to avoid noticing and what I CAN NO LONGER TOLERATE DAMMIT is that to everyone who ISN’T FROM CANADA, apparently the ONLY PLACE IN ONTARIO IS TORONTO.
Look. Your favourite hockey may go spend time in Toronto in the summer. He may even now have a condo there. BUT. If he’s from Ontario, he probably spends the majority of his time either in his ACTUAL HOMETOWN or more likely in cottage country aka the Great Lakes/Kawartha Lakes/Muskoka Lakes/Rideau Lakes. (This split is usually Toronto & central goes to Kawarthas (less expensive)/Muskokas (more expensive), Ottawa area goes to Rideau Lakes, and southern Ontario west of Toronto goes to the Great Lakes because they’re boxed in by Ontario, Erie, and Huron.)
Some examples of Ontario hockeys Not From Toronto include:
Tyler Seguin - from Brampton/Whitby. Not Toronto. Went to school in Toronto for a few years, yes. Brampton and Whitby are considered “GTA” or Greater Toronto Area. But we’ve all heard the story of him having to travel 2 hours each way to get to school, right? (Sidenote: St Mike’s was in a LOAD of hot water a few years ago over hazing/rape/toxic masculinity culture. So there’s a bit of context for that messed up hockey culture we’ve all been talking about re: Br*nd*n L**ps*c, and why Young Tyler -- and even older Tyler ymmv -- likely Was/Is The Way He Was/Is).
Brent Burns - from Ajax which is next door to... James Neal - from Whitby. See sidenote below.
(Food sidenote: Whitby/Ajax/Pickering, which are all in a row and are basically the same place, offer fantastic Indian food and therefore I approve of this area.)
Mitch Marner - from Markham/Thornhill. Both Not Toronto. Again, Markham and Thornhill are GTA. If you were to map it RIGHT NOW when there’s no traffic, they’re like half hour drives to downtown Toronto, but on a regular traffic day? *laughs* Good luck.
Connor McDavid - Gonna throw him in here with Marner. Richmond Hill is also GTA but north of Thornhill. People from Richmond Hill say they’re from Toronto. They’re from York Region.
Vince Dunn (who everyone suddenly seems obsessed with) - from LINDSAY which ISN’T EVEN GTA. Lindsay is a small ass town in cottage country that nobody has ever heard of except as the place where people stop for groceries on the way to the cottage and/or for Kawartha Dairy Ice Cream because that shit is LEGENDARY. (Sidenote: get Moose Tracks, you won’t regret it. Also, technically KD is in Bobcaygeon which is a 20 minute drive and the subject of the Tragically Hip song. The more you know.) He played in Peterborough (also not GTA) and Thorold (which is essentially St Catharines and is just 20 minutes from Niagara Falls / not far from Buffalo NY). NONE OF THESE PLACES IS GTA LET ALONE TORONTO.
Corey Perry - Gonna throw him in here with Dunn because he is from Peterborough and played there, too. What can I share about Ptbo? Let’s just say that nobody is surprised that he’s from there. He’s on my team but I know that everyone whose team he isn’t on hates him.
Matt Duchene - Gonna throw him in here with Dunn because he’s from literal cottage country. Like Haliburton IS where people go to cottage. They stop in Lindsay for groceries and drive another hour and fifteen minutes to the forest. It’s called the Highlands and they have Highland Games like we’re in Scotland or something and the roads up there are hemmed by trecherous rock faces weaving through lakes and forest and The Great Canadian Shield (dense fucking rock). It’s beautiful and peaceful. In the winter it’s a ghost town up there.
Travis Konecny - from Clachan which isn’t even London which is NOT GTA. London is like halfway between Toronto and Windsor (across the border from Detroit) in southern Ontario. It’s a two. hour. drive. with NO traffic. TK played in OTTAWA which is like FOUR HOURS from Toronto in the OTHER DIRECTION and SARNIA which is even FARTHER from Toronto than London is on the border of Michigan. (Sidenote: If you want to avoid long waits at the Buffalo or Windsor borders, go through Sarnia. The border guards are super friendly -- read: happy to see humans -- and will direct you down the road to the nearest Tim Horton’s if you ask nicely.)
(Canadian Culture sidenote: Letterkenny is a fantastic show based on and written by a guy from Listowel, Ontario. Listowel is like 2 hours from Clachan but all of southern Ontario on either side of London is just small villages spotted throughout farm country -- as many of you have probably seen in TK’s summer video -- and if you want an idea of why he is/talks That Way and if you just want to experience joy, you should watch it. If you ever come visit in the summer, stop in Stratford. It’s known as Justin Beiber’s hometown but it’s a theatre town that hosts an annual Shakespearean-centric theatre festival. *_*)
Claude Giroux - is French and yet is actually from Ontario, not Quebec, because northern Ontario is super French. And northern Ontario? Is not the Muskokas. We’ll say shit like “We’re heading up north this weekend” to mean “the cottage” but when we say “northern Ontario” we mean “Way the hell up in the frozen tundra where only brave souls dare tread”. It is a TEN HOUR DRIVE to Toronto without traffic. That is longer than it takes to drive from London, England to Edinburgh, Scotland which I have DONE and which SUCKS. Hearst is even more north than Winnipeg. You know that video of Jonathan Toews swimming in a hole in the ice in APRIL and saying he’s in Kenora, Ontario? Kenora is MORE SOUTH than Hearst. It’s cold as up there. I checked and with the windchill it was -36C in Hearst on Valentine’s Day. fuck that.
Mark Scheifele & Tanner Pearson - Kitchener/Waterloo. One hour from Toronto and yet Not GTA. Super German area. Has the largest Oktoberfest outside of Germany (no, really). KW is a very techy area and they slingshotted themselves into the future so all their roads are roundabouts and my mother is incapable of driving there without screaming in terror as she nearly kills everyone and they all honk angrily at her. (Food sidenote: You cannot find good Indian food in Kitchener. Trust me, I’ve tried. The people there think sauerkraut is spicy so all the international cuisine has really dialed it back in response and it makes me very sad.)
John Tavares & Jason Spezza - Mississauga. Not Toronto but kind of like a step-sibling? Quieter. More suburban. Not too bad, really. Close enough to Toronto and where all the Leafs seem to live (the west end) that it makes sense for them to say they wanted to “come home” to Toronto. Also, this is where Pearson International Airport is.
Hockeys Literally From Toronto who I can think of right now: Wayne Simmonds, PK Subban (both from Scarborough, one of the six main Toronto boroughs referred to in Drake’s “the 6ix” thing), Chris Stewart, Trevor Daly, Tom Wilson, Zach Hyman, Jamie Oleksiak, Brandon Tanev, etc etc etc
Last sidenote: The west coast is different. Victoria, BC produces great hockeys and I commend them for their noble work. (Looking at you, oh Captain, my Captain.)
ETA: If you have questions about specific areas or Canadian culture for fic writing or something, feel free to ask! :)

LK 102: The Sulfa Intolerable Acts
(pt1) (pt2) (pt3) (pt4)
Tumblr media
Why the fuck does Lt Brampton have such a vendetta against these kids.
Tumblr media
OMFG GET A ROOM YOU TWO also goddamn does that 14/15 year old have the proportions of a dorito.
Tumblr media
Ah yes, the moment the Chaos Boi opens up and shows even more how much he is a Softboi. 11 year old me did not stand a chance.
Tumblr media
oh my GOD THIS GUY HAS SUCH GOOD EQUITATION???
Tumblr media
LOL nevermind
Tumblr media
Ok but why is this scene going so hard. You can see the shadow where the dude's hand crosses into the light shaft. This is screaming for a redraw.
Tumblr media
OH GOD BB JAMES
Tumblr media
James watch out ya girl is *catching feelings*
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm sorry this scene just about killed me as an 11 year old and its killing me now as a 31 year old.
Tumblr media
why are his fingees so elegant. Also the animators tried REALLY hard in this frame. His proportions and anatomy aren't wonky, the foreshortening looks correct, they detailed his fucking nose, his fucking pupils are pointed in the same direction and also look like they're focusing on her, the way one ear sticks out because his head is cocked a little (even when he's being sweet he's sassy,) the way his hair is asymmetrical in a way which makes sense to gravity. The expression matches the voice acting!!
Tumblr media
They even tried really hard in these sets of frames, too. So did the voice actor tbh.
But also OH GOD THE EMPATHY. She feels like shit for complaining about a piece of jewelry, especially to someone she's roasted before about being uncouth and uncivilized, but instead of calling her shallow like she probably expects, James instead, very gently and softly, shares that he also has a piece of jewelry he wears to remind him of lost family and shows that despite them having such different backgrounds they're really not all that different.
AND THE FUCKING HARP FLOURISH AT THE END??? How THE FUCK is this not setting everything up for the two of them to get together????
Tumblr media
I don't know why the way they animated James here kills me but it killed me back then, too. Maybe its the confidence? Maybe its still the rush from witnessing a soft moment between two people catching feels for each other??
Tumblr media
Lady Phillips I understand the situation is really tense for the Frillips Polycule but you are going to lose oxygen by constantly gasping for breath like that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Your honor he's tearing this ethically non-monogamous family apart!
Tumblr media
awww shit the Bard with 20 Charisma's about to roll with advantage
Tumblr media Tumblr media
CC is wrong, he said "I Thank Mr. Wedderburn for everything he has said against me." but OH MY GOD THE DRAMA, the guy looks like in the moment he's realized what he's done, but then the pain of whatever drama went on in their relationship clouds him over once more and he is swallowed whole by a mad thirst for revenge.
Tumblr media
They're both just like "BITCH WHAT IS YOU DOING"
Tumblr media
"My country is America" These two are so overjoyed and relieved, but like, clearly what Benji Franx is saying can be construed so hard as Genuine Treason, so him arguing that he isn't a British Subject because the Vibes Of It All logically wouldn't hold much water in that court, so why are they relieved/overjoyed? Is Lady Phillips secretly a Whig and totally supportive of American Independence? Honestly I think she is. She wants to see the system overhauled and burnt to the ground.
Tumblr media
Donkey Kong Country
Tumblr media
This fucking madlad. The confidence of knowing how to make a getaway in a cask makes me think he's done this before.
Tumblr media
How are they still conscious.
Tumblr media
yeah girl, take command!
Tumblr media
"y'all bitches FUCKIN' LEFT ME HERE???"
Tumblr media
Lt. Brampton is so fucking smarmy.
Tumblr media
fuckin raycisssts
Tumblr media
Moses about to cry and tbh so would I
To be continued

“2 MEN BREAK JAIL AT SIMCOE,” The Globe and Mail. March 18, 1943. Page 13. ---- Leave by Window While Waiting Burwash Trip ---- Simcoe, March 17 (Special). - Seen by Turnkey James Bull only two minutes previously, two prisoners made a successful getaway from the Norfolk County jail about 3 o'clock this afternoon. The men made their escape by climbing out of a basement window to the street.
The men, both of whom were awaiting transfer to Burwash Industrial Farm to serve terms for theft, had been wheeling coal from a section of the basement to the furnace room prior to their escape. Turnkey Bull immediately notified Chief of Police George Ashby, who in turn notified Provincial Police of surrounding towns to be on the lookout for the escaped pair.
Both men were sentenced in local police court last Thursday to terms In Burwash. Adam Buchan, 23. of Sioux Lookout, recently stationed at No. 25 C.A.B.T.C, received a term of one year definite and six months indefinite on a charge of stealing $95 from Leo Shortell of Brampton. His previous record also included jail breaking.
The other escaped prisoner, Seraphin Houle, 22, of Sudbury, also stationed at No. 25 C.A.B.T.C. prior to his discharge from the army, was sentenced to six months definite and three months Indefinite on a charge of taking a car without the owner's consent.

Criminal Harassment in Canada
This article is a review, in layman's terms, of the necessities for confirmation of a claim of criminal badgering in Canada. For a more extensive comprehension of how this generally new criminal legilsation has been deciphered by Canadian Courts, reference ought to be made to legal data sites which discuss real court choices and legal scholastic writing on what is a fairly mind boggling zone of law.
Throughout my just about thirty years of training as a criminal protection lawyer, it has over and again been shown to me that the criminal law identifying with specific territories of human conduct and the normal individual from the public's impression of what the law according to that topic, frequently vary generally.
It is this distinction among observation and reality that caused Mr. Blunder to beget the acclaimed expression "the law is an ass" longer than a century ago. With the exemption of rape enactment, this withdrawal of public discernment and the truth of the law is no place more obvious than concerning the law referred to in Canada as Criminal Harassment.
Tumblr media
Any individual who has viewed an exemplary Cary Grant sentiment film, or read E.L. James' smash hit Fifty Shades of Gray, may legitimately reason that determination is all acceptable it is the thing that successes you the article or your kind gestures. All things considered, you can't simply acknowledge no for an answer in the event that you actually plan to charm over or win back that young lady or fellow you had always wanted. Well in Canada, under the Criminal Harassment enactment, both Cary Grant and Christian Gray may well end up entangled in a criminal preliminary.
While wide in scope, in that it envelops a wide scope of direct including more clear instances of criminal conduct, for example, following and compromising, Criminal Harassment is, in a large portion of the cases criminal lawyers and the courts manage, about undesirable correspondence.
The Criminal Harassment segment of the Criminal Code of Canada states:
264. (1) No individual will, without lawful power and realizing that someone else is irritated or foolishly concerning whether the other individual is hassled, participate in lead alluded to in subsection (2) that causes that other individual sensibly, in all the conditions, to fear for their security or the wellbeing of anybody known to them.
Restricted direct
(2) The lead referenced in subsection (1) comprises of
(a) more than once following here and there the other individual or anybody known to them;
(b) more than once speaking with, either legitimately or by implication, the other individual or anybody known to them;
(c) assailing or watching the abode house, or spot where the other individual, or anybody known to them, dwells, works, carries on business or turns out to be; or
(d) participating in compromising behavior coordinated at the other individual or any individual from their family.
Discipline
(3) Every individual who repudiates this segment is blameworthy of
(a) an indictable offense and is at risk to detainment for a term not surpassing ten years; or
(b) an offense culpable on outline conviction.
As can be seen, sub-areas 2 (a), (c) and (d) portray rather clear types of precluded lead following and undermining conduct. Be that as it may, by far most of charges laid under this segment of the Criminal Code are under 2 (b) and manage a considerably more inconspicuous issue- - determined correspondence with another individual.Cary Grant and Christian Gray be careful.
In our age of the web and universal cell phones, moment and offbeat correspondence is simple. Yet, notice; one such a large number of messages, messages, or facebook messages can land an abandoned sweetheart or industrious admirer in criminal difficulty.
So when does undesirable correspondence become criminal? Truth be told, area 264 (2) (b) of the Code has very exact necessities before verification can be found. In light of the enactment and its understanding by the courts, the accompanying must be appeared to build up the components of criminal provocation by correspondence:
1. The correspondence must be monotonous (be that as it may, this has been deciphered by the courts to mean essentially more than one event of correspondence).
2. The objective of the correspondence must be irritated (a meaning of badgering frequently cited with endorsement by Canadian courts is "The complainant must be more than vexed, disturbed or irritated by the disallowed lead. The Crown must exhibit that the complainant was tortured, pained, stressed consistently or constantly, tormented, bothered and goaded"- note the utilization of the disjunctive "or").
3. The litigant must realize that the complainant is hassled (then again, remember that such information need not be demonstrated by direct proof; the fundamental information with respect to the respondent might be construed from the conditions of the correspondence and may incorporate reference to the idea of the relationship before the lead that frames the premise of the charge).
4. The direct grumbled of must reason the complainant to fear for their security or the wellbeing of anybody known to the person in question (indeed, the proviso in point 3 above additionally applies here-the vital dread might be construed from the setting wherein the correspondence takes placeincluding the historical backdrop of the connection between the gatherings).
Along these lines, truth be told, substantially more should be demonstrated than only a few of careless email or instant messages. It ought to consistently be borne as a main priority, nonetheless, that what fulfills the courts past a sensible uncertainty is unquestionably more that what most cops need to start a charge and more than what the commonplace investigator regards adequate to continue with an arraignment While the pre-requirements to conviction are, with an honest appointed authority and a fit lawyer shielding you, moderately rigid, there are hardly any protections against the monetary and mental pressure of shaky charge and indictment. Likewise with different offenses which will in general separate along sex lines, criminal provocation choices by the specialists are frequently politicized. Tragically, a simple claim as a general rule brings about a charge being laid.
In the outcome, alert must be practiced by anybody speaking with another person in a setting of outrage or, truly, lonely love.

It Had To Be You XV
Chapter Fifteen: I Won’t Give Up
Tumblr media
Summary: You finally talk to James about why he offered what he did and you give him a sort-of ultimatum before you head to Brampton to be there for Tyler at his Grandparents funeral.
Author’s Note: Okay, so I kind of changed up my schedule again -- I’m going to have two out again this week (next one up either Tuesday or Wednesday) because I’m trying to distract myself from school and life in general. Anyway, this one has a few time jumps and I promise, it’s just because I want to catch us up to real time.
Warnings: Nothing really, some angst, some cursing
Song Credit: I Won’t Give Up -- Jason Mraz
  masterlist
Once you got back to Calgary, you spent your time buried in school work and trying to avoid James’ attempts at convincing you an open relationship would work. It would work for a few days, then you’d finish all your work and have to interact with him. The whole thing came to a head after you took a call from Tyler at the end of March and he wanted to make an “amendment” to his earlier offer.
“Ty, I’m so sorry,” you said as Tyler told you about the loss of his Grandmother, “I know how much you loved your Grandparents. Are you okay?” It was a dumb question to ask; how was he supposed to answer? Of course he wasn’t okay.
“I’m gonna have to be…” he sighed heavily, “I’ve got a road trip for the next week. I can’t think about it too much or I’ll be distracted. I just, honestly, I wasn’t even sure I was going to tell you but I didn’t want you to think there was anything wrong without knowing what was actually wrong.”
“Of course, Ty, I completely understand,” you spoke quietly, listening more than anything, “If you need anything. Or if you want me to be with you at the funeral, I will be. Whatever you need.” You saw James creeping around the corner to listen to the conversation and you saw his head perk up when you mentioned leaving again, causing you to furrow your brow.
“The service is in a couple weeks, after I get back from Mexico. I’d actually love for you to be there” he said with a tinge of happiness in his voice
“I’m there” you replied, telling him you’d see him soon and let him go, turning around to face an excited James.
“Not now James,” you slumped down onto the couch, “Tyler’s Grandma just died, his Grandpa a few weeks ago. I told him I’d go to the service.”
“You are going to go! Perfect,” you looked confused and let out an offended “excuse me” before he continued, “No, I just mean.. this gives me a chance to talk to you about the agreement.”
“Not this again, James there is no agreement, we’re not having an open relationship. We’d both lose.”
“What if we had very VERY strict rules,” you shook your head, “hear me out. Tyler is the most important person in your life right now, right? I miss Freddy -- talking to her. If we had an open relationship but only with them and we didn’t tell each other about what we did with them, then it could totally work…”
“No, it couldn’t,” you shook your head, amazed that he was still talking about this, “it would go horribly wrong, because we’d both know exactly what the other was doing. It’s a bad idea, James. I don’t like it, I don’t want to do it. You’re seriously telling me that I should let you cheat?”
“No, see that’s what’s so great about it. It wouldn’t be cheating,” he said and you rolled your eyes, “you get to see what’s it’s like to date Tyler, or have sex with him if that’s what you want, and I get to explore whatever is going on with me and Freddy. It’s win win.” You wanted to slap him, you were so irritated. But you couldn’t figure out if this is what he wanted, did he want you at all?
“No. I can’t keep saying ‘no.’ This conversation is going around in circles and it’s affecting my friendships. I’ve told you I don’t think it’s a good idea and you have yet to listen to me or take it into account that I wouldn’t be comfortable with it. You want Freddy? You want to figure out your feelings for her? Fine, I wish you two the best.”
“What? No! I don’t want to lose you,” you scoffed, confused and angry at his words, “I want us to work and I think this could help us. The therapist said that he’s seen couples have success with this. I love you and I want us to be better but I think we need to figure out what we want”
“If that’s still each other you mean?”
“EXACTLY!” You brought your legs up onto the couch to sit cross-legged and think about what he was saying; still hurt but, more than anything, tired of having this conversation. So, you gave him a choice.
“James… I can’t have an open relationship, it’s not who I am. I would know that every second you weren’t with me, you were with her. It would drive me crazy. It would be the same if I did something with Tyler, which I wouldn’t because I wouldn’t want to ruin our friendship,” you stressed, “you would get so angry and possessive. You do already! I agree that we need to figure out what we want, whether it’s each other or someone else or just to go back to being single altogether. But an open relationship is not the way. Not for me. So here’s your choice: we can either end it now and save ourselves a hell of a lot of trouble or we can take some time away from each other, a break, to figure where we stand.” You could tell he was contemplating what that meant by the look on his face.
“So, we would still be together but free to see other people,” he questioned, “like an open relationship?!”
“No,” you sighed, “not like an open relationship. We would take time to be single for a bit with the possibility of getting back together if that’s what we wanted. But if you want to see other people during that time, then I guess we have our answer, don’t we?”
“So, we’re like Ross and Rachel now?”
  “Sure…” you said defeated
“Can I think about it? Sleep on it?” You weren’t really sure what there was to think about. He was getting what he wanted even if he didn’t think he was, but you agreed anyway. The next morning he sat down in front of you as you ate your cereal and agreed to your “terms.”
“I know this will be good for us, (Y/N),” he said, laying his hand lightly on your arm, “tell Tyler I’m sorry for his loss, when you see him.” You felt your heart break and you let out a small tear as James walked away. This was it. You had finally lost him. Part of you thought it was a good thing; the relationship was a disaster, everyone knew it, but you still loved him for some reason and hearing him say that he wanted to see other people hurt you too much to bear. But maybe he was right, maybe it would make everything better and we would realize how much we loved each other while we were apart.
Or he’d realize that you were never really who he wanted, he just never knew it.
It had been two weeks since you last saw James, opting instead to stay with Lucy while this sorted itself out. Nothing seemed to be changing but you took it as a positive sign that you hadn’t heard any stories yet.
“You have everything for Toronto?” Lucy asked from around the corner. You had a red-eye flight and she wanted to make sure you weren’t forgetting any pillows or anything to help you sleep.
“I think so. I’m only going for two days, just for the funeral. After that, I’ll be right back here. It all fits in a carry-on. If I forget something, we’ll just shove it in” you joked and she sauntered over to you.
“This is the you that I remember,” she said as she stood in front of you, tilting her head slightly to the side, “the girl who would be so generous with her time. I mean you’re literally flying across the country to be with your friend.” You smiled for a second and then all of a sudden got very nervous.
“Shit!” you cried, “I’ve never been to a funeral before, I was too young for Mom and Dads. Chris didn’t take us remember? He had some stupid excuse but that means I’ve never been to one…”
“That should be a good thing…”
“How am I supposed to act, Luce?!” When she saw your eyes grow wider with each second, she guided you to the couch
“Calm down. Just be there for Tyler. That’s all you need to do. It’s not about you. You don’t have to do any talking other than what Tyler wants you to do. Stay by his side. Be there for him.” You nodded and caught your breath, packing up your final items and heading to the car. There was a part of you that loved red-eye flights. You had done your fair share while you were exploring Europe, so it was familiar to you; but you always saw the greatest interactions between people. Some were sweet, others were angry because they were tired and couldn’t get to their gate, most were like zombies but they were all entertaining to watch. The flights never seemed to be as turbulent as they normally were but the alcohol was free so maybe that had more to do with it than the time. By the time you arrived in Brampton, the sun was just rising and the city looked like it was painted gold; you were in awe, so when Tyler opened the door and saw you looking at the sky, he laughed.
“That tired huh?” he said and you turned around quickly, letting out a smile.
“The sky is so beautiful, look what it does to the city,” you said, pointing up to the sky, “this rarely happens in Calgary, it’s always… pink”
“Nature,” he smirked, “it’s a crazy thing.” You put your arm down and returned his smirk. Bringing him in for a hug when he looked down.
“I’m so so sorry, Ty…” you felt him squeeze you a little tighter, “what do you need from me? Right now, right this minute?” He pulled away from you and stared at you for a minute, contemplating.
“Nothing,” he shook his head with a laugh, “come in, put your stuff into the guest room. Then you can maybe help my Mom with something.” You agreed and followed him toward the guest room in his Mom’s home, trying your best to be as quiet as possible. Once you put your bags down on the bed, you turned around to find Tyler’s three labs at the door beside him.
“You brought the boys,” you knelt down and they rushed to you, licking your face, “you didn’t even need me.” He began walking to you and before you knew it, he was there in front of you while you slowly stood up.
“Maybe I didn’t need you, but I wanted you.. here” you stared into his eyes, searching for something, expecting him to break away but he didn’t; not until Jackie was awake.
“Is that (Y/N) I hear,” Jackie called from down the hall, “there she is!” She brought you in for a hug and thanked you for being there for Tyler.
“It’s my pleasure, I’m sure he would do the same for me.” He smiled and she released you from the hug, bringing you into the kitchen; buzzing around because there was so much to do.
“I’m gonna leave you ladies to it,” you saw him press a soft kiss to his Mom’s temple, “I’ll see you in a bit. Stay out of trouble.” He left and you spent the whole morning making appetizers for the service that Jackie was hosting in the afternoon. A few hours later, Tyler, his sisters and his parents were back from the Church; you’d offered to stay back and prepare everything so Jackie wouldn’t have to worry.
“You’re not coming to the Church?” Tyler’s face contorted into concern
“Ty, you’ll be right back and I just want to take the stress off you guys. All of you. So, staying back and putting a few sandwiches on a few trays is the least I can do,” you comforted him, rubbing his arm as the concern on his face slowly faded away.
  “If you’re sure”
“I’ve got the dogs, don’t worry. I’ll be right here when you get back” your intention was to lean in and give him a hug but, for some reason, you hugged him and pushed up to lay a small kiss on his cheek.
“We won’t be long” he seemed to ignore the kiss and you were relieved.
The crowd slowly filtering in was more lively than you’d expected; talking loudly, laughing, yelling across groups of people and through multiple rooms. You got a tinge of anxiety looking for Tyler, when he grabbed your hand and dragged you away.
“Hey,” he said, “sorry, had to get away from that for a second.” You nodded and peered around the corner to look at the crowd
  “Is this all family?”
“And family friends, everyone who knew my Grandparents.” You turned back to him to see him leaning against the wall across from you so you leaned back against the wall on your side, playfully kicking his foot
“How you doing?” you asked, looking at his red, swollen eyes
“I’m fine…” he said, unconvincingly, “I didn’t realize how difficult today was going to be. I just can’t believe they’re both gone…” He let out a single tear before wiping it away and you stood up to walk over to him, lifting his chin up
“It’s okay, Ty…” he focused on you, “if you need to cry, there’s nothing wrong with that. If you don’t need to or don’t want to, that’s fine too.” He stood up and rubbed his face, saying that the two of you should head back. At this point the group was sitting around telling stories about Ty’s Grandparents, so the two of you sat down to listen, laughing occasionally when the rest of the group did. When you brought your legs onto the couch to get more comfortable, Tyler rested his hand on your knee and the group took notice.
“So how long have you two been together?” a man suddenly asked, the two of you scrambling to answer
“Oh no, we’re not together. No, we’re just friends…” you and Tyler clarified over each other; you noticed Cassidy and Candace turn to each other and you shifted slightly so Tyler moved his hand.
“Sorry, kids. Didn’t mean to embarrass you,” the man said before directing a question to you, “so you came all this way to be with your ‘friend?’” he sounded unconvinced and he raised an eyebrow to prove his point
“Of course,” you confessed, “this would be hard for anyone to handle and I wanted to be there for Tyler. If he needed a friend.” The man, who turned out to be Tyler’s Great Uncle, seemed to let the topic go for a while but it did make you wonder; He had family here, so he wasn’t alone…
“I’m sorry about him,” Tyler said after a moment, “everyone wants me to be in a relationship, especially after what happened in November. They think that if I’m single I’ll keep getting into trouble. And you’re the complete opposite of Z- her, so they think you’d be good for me.” You smiled faintly, not really understanding why your heart dropped when he said you’d be good for him.
“Don’t worry about it. I get it. It’s what family does” you responded with a smile. The rest of the service went by fairly quickly, there was a moment where Jackie put on some music and the group sang along. You stood in the door frame and watched as this family, going through such a sad time, was able to come together and focus on the positive for even just a brief moment. You walked back to the guest bedroom, overcome with an emotion you weren’t familiar with -- like jealousy mixed with sadness and laced with anger -- to escape the busy group.
“So…” Tyler said as he walked through the door, “what’s been going on with you and the boyfriend?”
“Let’s not talk about my love life…” you deflected, “let’s talk about yours. How’s Danielle? Or do you call her Summer?”
“That was one kiss in Mexico like four months ago. I have no love life” he shifted his weight against the door where he stood.
“Oh pfft, I don’t believe that for a second. You’re telling me you haven’t talked to her since? That you haven’t seen her since Mexico?” you pried
“No. She doesn’t live in Dallas, she’s in like New York or something,” he sounded a little defensive and you tried to assure him that you didn’t mean anything by it, “just trust me. Nothing is going on with us, we’re friends. Like me and you.”
“You and I,” you corrected, “and if you say so.” He squinted his eyes at you, getting ready to say something before Jackie called for the two of you to come say goodbye to everyone.
The next morning, you weren’t sure what to expect. You woke up late, so everyone had already been up and out a few times, doing everything they needed to get done.
“Morning Sleeping Beauty,” Jackie teased, “want something to eat?”
“No thanks,” you sat down next to Tyler at the island, shoving him lightly, “why didn’t you wake me?”
“I tried,” he answered, a piece of toast shoved in his cheek, “the dogs had you surrounded and you looked exhausted, so I let you sleep. If I’d known you were going to sleep this late, I would’ve tried harder.” You hit his shoulder lightly as he finished his food, letting out a sarcastic ‘ow.’
“So, when’s your flight back (Y/N)?” Candace asked from behind you
“It’s pretty late, like 10 or something,” you answered, “I was thinking maybe I’d get an earlier flight though…” Everyone seemed to stop and turn to you, making you wonder if something had happened
“You don’t want to hang out with us anymore?” Jackie asked
“Oh, gosh, no, that’s not it,” you explained and they smiled, “I just thought I’d give you guys some family time”
“Oh please,” Cassidy chimed, “we always have family time, it’s almost sickening. Stay until your flight. Hang out with us.” You looked around at the faces you were surrounded by and you agreed nervously. The family took you out to their favourite places around town; restaurants, arcades, theatres and, of course, the rink where Tyler used to skate. With each place, you got a better idea of who Tyler was as a kid but you wondered how Boston happened, so you fell back from his Mom and his sisters to walk with him.
“So you were a good kid?” you asked
  “Yeah?” he responded, questioning
“Why were you such a terrible adult?”
“What are you talking about?” he laughed
“Boston, that’s what I’m talking about. Like you went far off the deep end there,” you smiled up at him sarcastically, “we’ve never really talked about it either.”
“It was my first year in the league. I was 19 and it was the playoffs. I was learning you know,” he added, “I didn’t really know the consequences of my actions yet. I didn’t even know who I was at that point. Now I do…”
“You don’t sound so sure” you questioned and he shrugged. The rest of the ‘tour’ took all of about 30 minutes and before you knew it you were back at Jackie’s place, sitting on the couch with the dogs and chatting until you had to leave for the airport.
“Can I talk to you for a sec? Before you get into the car?” Cassidy asked, pulling you aside
  “Sure, what’s up?” you asked
“Come back,” she stated plainly and you gave her a quizzical look, “be here with us. Get to know our Mom. I know that you like learning more about Tyler and there’s no better place than this.”
“Cass, I can’t just take off, James wo--” you started but she interrupted before you could finish
“Screw James! You don’t wanna be with him, you want to be here. With my brother. With us. You’re happier here than you’ve been in a long time. In like a year.”
“Okay, okay,” you calmed her, “you’re not wrong. This last year has been incredibly difficult but I’m trying to move past it. James and I are trying to work ourselves out. I love you, Cass, and your family is… amazing. Honest. But I can’t just come out to Ontario everyday or every month. I will come back and visit, I’ll try my best to pop into Toronto this summer…”
“Please don’t give up on him” she said, her eyes brimming with tears and you could tell she was hoping that you’d stay. You looked back at Tyler and his family sitting around the kitchen island, waiting to drive you to the airport; you looked back at Cassidy with a sympathetic look and, as if she knew what you were going to say, she stormed off.
  “Cass?” you heard Jackie call
“Hey, everything okay?” Tyler asked you
“It’s.. a long story” you tried
“I don’t get it, what happened?” you pulled him into the guest bedroom to try and explain
“She.. thinks that I’m -- I don’t even know how to say it” he sat down on the bed in front of you and looked up at you, trying to predict your words
“We gotta head out soon,” he said just as Cassidy called out that she called you a Cab and he would be there in fifteen minutes, “hold on.” You could hear Cassidy and Tyler arguing about the cab, Candace jumping in occasionally to defend her sister and shortly Tyler barged through the door and demanded you tell him what was going on.
“Ty, I’m sorry,” you faltered, “I didn’t think Cass was upset or this upset, I guess.”
“What happened?! You have fifteen minutes”
“She thinks there’s something happening with us or that something could happen with us. And she wants me to stay or else it means I’m… giving up on you? I don’t know…” He stood back as you explained
  “Are you?”
  “Am I what?”
  “Giving up on me?”
“Ty.. Of course not. As a friend. Absolutely not. But there’s nothing else to give up on?” You could tell he took it the wrong way and you expected him to argue with you but instead he moved closer to you, causing you to step back.
“That’s it?” he took one more step toward you, “there’s nothing else?” He leaned in and you were frozen; you wanted to move because you knew this was wrong but you couldn’t, you just stared at him as he moved his lips to yours. The second his lips met yours, you pulled away
  “Ty…”
“I told you. Nothing is going on between Danielle and I…” you creased your brow and shook your head
“But I’m still with James. Technically”
  “What does that mean?”
“It’s complicated but it doesn’t matter. This,” you gestured between the two of you, “can’t happen. It won’t.”
  “Why?”
“Because..” you stopped, “I’m not who you want. Ty, you’re lonely. This is not what you want, emotions are high…” You trailed off when you heard Jackie say the cab was there.
  “Wait..”
“I have to go,” you turned to leave, a single tear falling when you were facing away, “goodbye Tyler.” You whizzed past Jackie and the girls out to the cab, finally letting out your tears as you told the cab driver where he was going. You heard Tyler yell out to you and when you turned around you saw him chasing the cab.
“Everything okay Miss?” the driver asked
“I’m fine. Please just drive.” You watched Tyler slow to a stop as he couldn’t chase the car anymore, noticing the defeated look on his face and you let out a stream of tears.
I wish I didn’t have to give up on him
