Music for the End of Time
"Music for the End of Time", a review of Matthias Glasner's film 'Dying' on the European Film Festival in South Africa, until 20 October 2024.

For the last couple weeks I've been drawing logos / designs for local-ish (mostly NJ, some PA and NY) bands as warmups in the morning. Here's what I've come up with! Massive post below the break explaining each logo + where to find each band and listen to their music.
Teenage Halloween- a staple of New Jersey basements for probably about a decade now and finally getting wider recognition in the last couple years. Pop punk / power pop with a killer horn section. First time I saw them was in New Brunswick playing with Walter Etc. and Blowout. They played a killer cover "Build Me Up Buttercup" and my wife got a black eye in the pit. Recommended tracks: "Brain Song," "666," "Clarity." Their first EP is on a separate bandcamp page btw, check it out here it's great.
Sweet Pill - They will call themselves a Philly band but in my heart they'll always be from Glassboro. Definitely one of the more recognizable names on this list. Emo revival - early stuff is more twinkly, more recent stuff is heavier. All of it's great. Recommended tracks "Nephew," "High Hopes."
Shark Club - Central Jersey's finest. I'm very biased because I actually know these dudes and they did the music for my wedding. Some of the best pop punk you'll hear and the nicest people you'll meet. Recommended tracks: "Game Theory," "Bill Murray," "Heavens to Betsy."
Rest Ashore - My favorite band for the last (oh God I'm old now) eight years. From gut-wrenching emo ballads to virtuoso math-rock instrumentals they do it all. One time I got to sing vocals on "Lucy's Theme" at a house show- thank you Erica! Recommended tracks: "Hjarta," "Chinese Opera," "Devotion," "Soyuz Sweetheart." Too many bangers to name honestly, just deep dive their discography.
Morus Alba - First band I ever went to see at a house show and still one of my absolute favorites. Their music feels like the bridge between the best pitchfork, /mu/ alt rock bands and high energy basement emo. I mean that as a compliment and I hope it comes off as one lol. I should note that since 2019 Morus Alba has morphed from a band into an experimental hip-hop project so later releases sound radically different and basically disconnected from the earlier stuff. Also my favorite release from them, Live at Isabelle's, has been scrubbed from the internet but if you'd like the files just email me. Recommended tracks: "Skyscraper," "Human Resources," "The Goodnight Waltz."
Have a Good Season - another Jersey mainstay that's still going strong. Emo revival in their earlier releases, now with more 70s power pop influences in their newer stuff. See them live, they put on a fantastic show and usually play some great covers in addition to their original music. HaGS guys if you're reading this, please put your version of "Since You've Been Gone" online, I'm begging you. Recommended tracks: "Joseph / Shel Silverstein," (you have to listen to them together for the drop, so good) , "Gum, "Gleaux / Scab." Also, frontman Nic Palermo interviewed me once.
Elephant Jake - If you see any of these bands live make it EJ, they put on such a damn good show. Electrifying indie punk from the Empire State. Recommended tracks: "F.D.C." "Sarah Moyer," "Goodness to Honest," and of course you gotta learn "Sebastien Bauer" for the singalongs.
Blind Lion - Sadly one of the greats that we lost along the way. Defunct since about 2017. I only got to see them once but it was a great performance. Alongside their own stuff they played some killer covers of "Bad Moon Rising" and "Moonage Daydream." I had trouble doing a logo design for them because I actually really like the composition, if not the "Ed Hardy-ness," of their existing logo so what you see here are two separate attempts, neither of which feels entirely satisfying to me. Frontperson Larry Flately currently plays in Nematode and also handled production of Bradley Gardens joke hiphop group The Breakfast Boiz under the moniker "DJ Ova EZ." Recommended tracks: "Brumous," "Dinner."
Fighting Seasons - A band that I sadly found out about too late (via a sticker under the bridge in my town which has since been painted over). 2010s pop punk that packs a helluva punch, especially considering that I'm pretty sure the members were high schoolers for most of the band's existence. I think some members may have gone on to form Sawce (FFO Chon, Polyphia, that type of music) but I can't remember where I read/heard that so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Recommended tracks: "Fighting Seasons," "Oil on Canvas"
Milkmen- Another fallen giant, officially disbanded in 2019. Like Morus Alba, they played the very first house show I attended and their few releases remain on constant rotation in my home. Used to put on a great show and were one of the bands I always thought would make it big until suddenly they weren't around anymore. Frontman Ben Thieberger contributed guitar and vocals to Covid quarantine project Kin if you're looking for a bit of an extra fix but beyond that I don't know what these guys are up to these days, sadly. Recommended tracks: "Ramus," "Johnny Dangerously," "how sieves catch breeze," "K.O.T.H."
Stand and Wave - New York (now Philly) pop punkers delivering instant dopamine hits with every track. Another great live act, see them with EJ if you can! They often play shows together. Recommended tracks: "Convos," "Mrs. Dash," "Splashton Kutcher," "Michael Collins."
My Chemical Romance - You know who they are. While I was drawing all these other logos I ran a poll on Patreon to decide which famous New Jersey band should also be graced with a drawing from me. MCR won the poll by a hefty margin so unfortunately you won't get to see me do an illegible black metal take on Hoboken's Yo La Tengo. I ended up doing two versions: the one with the halo is the first, the one with the bats was the second. I tried to do something kind of thin and elegant with the first one and I don't think it's terrible but I also wasn't quite satisfied with it. For the 2nd attempt I tried to lean into the kind of pulpy, almost horror punk aesthetic of early MCR and I think that one looks better even if it's less original.
Anyway if you took the time to read through all this, thank you very much! And please support these bands! Also If any of the links aren't working please let me know.
-Logan

Kiefer Sutherland and David Mazouz in Touch (2012) Pilot
S1E1
For the third time in three weeks, Jake has run away from school and climbed atop a cell phone tower, breaking the tower's security alarms at precisely 3:18 in the afternoon each time. For Child and Family Services, they, who have previously diagnosed Jake as autistic, see Jake's behavior as Martin not being able to handle Jake on his own, they who send Clea Hopkins to investigate. To perform a proper assessment, she removes Jake from the home and places him in an institution for two weeks where she can monitor him. Martin not only finds that move contemptible, but also believes that Jake is trying to tell him something, especially as the numbers Jake is scribbling seem to pop up elsewhere in their lives, as Jake makes the stray cell phones that Martin has found for him ring simultaneously, and after the lottery ticket Jake temporarily steals ends up being the multimillion dollar jackpot winning numbers. In his search to find out if Jake is just mute or if he has some other condition affecting his behavior, Martin finds Arthur Teller of the Teller Institute, he who tells Martin his theory of Jake's condition. Clea begins to believe that their autism diagnosis is incorrect when she views Jake first hand. Meanwhile, one of those cells phones which almost made it into Jake's possession makes a 'round the world trip from London to Ireland to JFK to Japan to Baghdad where it ends up making it full circle from its owner, a distraught father, to the wannabe pop singer to the enterprising prostitute to the teen who wants to help his family by buying a commercial oven for their baking business.
*In the scene in Jake's bedroom, Martin accidentally slams his own finger into the dresser and cries out "Dammit!" Fans of 24 (2001) will recognize Martin's tone of voice as reminiscent of Jack Bauer's iconic exclamation "Dammit!"

I want to know more about your baseball guys and friends and my questions:
Who has the most drip? The least?
What are they all studying in college?
When it comes to baseball, who’s the most traditional and who’s the most radical?
What pitches do the pitchers throw?
i'm so glad you like them! they're my best friends and i love answering questions about them.
this is about to be 80000000 words sorry
Who has the most drip? The least?
Ramón definitely has the most drip on and off the field. hallmarks of his style are bright colors, jewelry (earrings and a gold chain at the very least) and shirts that are unbuttoned so low it would honestly just be better to take it off altogether. it's a little unclear whether his style is actually good or whether his confidence is just so unreal that he can pull off anything. uni wise, it mostly comes down to wearing his pants as tight as possible. he's also a dirty mids believer
jake and ellie are always pretty put together but in a more understated way than ramón. charlie can dress up but usually he's just a guy i hate to break it to you. sam and tyler have likely never worn anything that wasn't team-issued or given away for free at other events.
What are they all studying in college?
tyler - mechanical engineering!
ellie - journalism
sam - business bro in some capacity. not finance or accounting but probably management
jake - doing the whole "what do you want to do with your sociology degree" "hit bombs, probably" routine
charlie - some kind of liberal arts because my soul dies every time i see some player say that they majored in something that's definitely not real like "american studies" or “science, technology & society” what do those words MEAN. in all honesty, i don't know how to classify exactly what charlie does, so if you have any suggestions, i'm all ears
ramón - media studies. he's absolutely becoming an analyst once he's done playing because he has the perfect personality for it. he and jake actually have a locker room show (like 96 questions) where they just dick around and try to corner their teammates it's delightful
When it comes to baseball, who’s the most traditional and who’s the most radical?
Charlie is definitely the most traditional. He knows the game has changed over the years, but he's so steeped in the tradition and the history and the heritage of the game and doesn't want to get too far removed from that. he's an absolute workhorse, and wants to throw a complete game every time. he's also good enough and stubborn enough that he could bring back the era of 30 complete games and 200+ innings a year (and he's trying to). his actual motion isn't that complicated either, it's a pretty simple rock step motion kind of like noah syndergaard? he doesn't mess with funky arm slots or deliveries because his pitches are just that dependable, and if you layer his different pitch deliveries on top of each other, they're pretty indistinguishable
on the other end, ramón doesn't mind messing around in the pitching lab working on the next new thing. if there's a new drill/tool/program he's willing to give it a shot, no matter how far out it is. their approaches make them butt heads sometimes but they really balance each other out. ramón does not have a uniform arm slot - he's a sidearm pitcher but just kind of flings the ball out there and hopes his catcher finds it. because of this, he's a little wilder but it's worked for him so far.
whenever i think of them, strictly in a baseball approach sense, i think of this article about gerrit cole and trevor bauer, except for. you know. charlie and ramón actually like each other and ramón is a much better person than bauer.
What pitches do the pitchers throw?
Again, charlie is really really traditional. He probably has a four or five pitch mix, and relies mostly on his blistering four seam fastball and slider, followed by his changeup and splitfinger. maybe a stomach-dropping hammer curve if he wants to mix it up. he throws very hard and very accurately, so he's never really had to learn to fool hitters. he doesn't tip pitches but you basically know what you're getting and it still doesn't help.
ramón does not nearly have the velo charlie does. it's not his style of pitching anyway — he relies mostly on offspeed stuff, lots of motion and getting hitters to chase out of the zone, because let's be real he's not throwing in the zone anyway. i also think he has a bigger arsenal, but it's not that consistent, he'll just mix in and out depending on what's working. he likes a cutter and slurve, and was early on the sweeper bandwagon. he does have a fastball (he prefers two seam) but it's nothing groundbreaking. he's also actively working on a circle changeup

Yankees Win Series Against the Blue Jays, Spoil Their Playoff Hopes
NYY @ TOR
Game 1
RHP Michael King, who has been strong as a replacement starter, got the ball for the New York Yankees versus RHP Kevin Gausman (a former Baltimore Orioles pitcher and Yankees nemesis) and the Toronto Blue Jays.
The offense for both teams was abysmal and nonexistent for the first eight innings. This was in part due to the dominant pitching of the Yankees and Blue Jays.
King did get himself in trouble while pitching in the bottom of the third inning. After he got LF Daulton Varsho to pop out for the first out, King gave up a single to C Alejandro Kirk.
Next, once CF Kevin Kiermaier grounded into a force-out for the second out, King walked RF George Springer and SS Bo Bichette to load the bases.
The scoring threat ended when King was able to strike out 1B Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. looking for the third out. That was certainly a trick out of Houdini’s playbook for King.
The Yankees threatened to score in the top of the seventh inning when DH Giancarlo Stanton hit a 2B off Gausman with one out.
The brain puzzler in this situation was this: with a guy in scoring position who no longer has speed, why wasn’t a pinch-runner used for Stanton?
Maybe the reason was that Yankees manager Aaron Boone didn’t want to use RF and part-time DH Aaron Judge to bat in Stanton’s place in the lineup because he wanted to rest Judge and completely give him an off-day from this game.
There might have been other options other than Judge as a pinch-hitter in Stanton’s spot, who knows? Either way, it would’ve been better to use someone like utility outfield Jake Bauers to pinch-run for Stanton at that moment.
youtube
Anyone other than Stanton should’ve been placed at second base because in the next at-bat, 3B Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit a 1B off Gausman, but Stanton couldn’t score on it.
With Stanton at third base and IKF at first base, RF Oswaldo Cabrera was at the plate. Before Cabrera made contact with the ball, IFK stole second base off Gausman, his 14th stolen base this season.
With two baserunners now in scoring position, Cabrera hit a ball that seemed like an RBI single. Unfortunately, Stanton was thrown out at home and Cabrera reached first base on a fielder’s choice.
With two outs already made in this inning, Oswald Peraza flew out to Springer in right field for the third out and Gausman worked out of trouble.
It all came down to the top of the ninth inning with reliever Jordan Romano pitching for the Jays. 2B Gleyber Torres hit a leadoff 1B of Romano to get things started for the Yankees.
In the next at-bat, C Austin Wells hit a two-run HR – his third in his MLB career – off Romano, giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead and final score of the game.
Game 2
RHP and Cy Young candidate Gerrit Cole pitched for the Yankees against RHP José Berríos and the Jays.
The scoring began in the top of the fourth inning when Judge as the RF hit a two-run HR off Berríos, scoring 1B DJ LeMahieu and Judge himself. The Yankees led 2-0.
In the top of the fifth inning, Stanton hit a two-run RBI 1B off Berríos, scoring C Ben Rortvedt and Judge. The Yankees extended their lead to 4-0. Torres was thrown out at home for the third out of the inning.
youtube
In the top of the seventh inning, Judge hit another two-run HR in this game, but it was off reliever Trevor Richards this time. Peraza and Judge scored, further extending the Yankees lead to 6-0.
This score would hold up, giving the Yankees the win in this game and the series win in general. Cole pitched a complete shutout game against the Jays with his family in attendance.
Game 3
RHP Luke Weaver was looking to be dominant like he was in his last start with the Yankees. Weaver went up against RHP Chris Bassitt for the Jays.
Unfortunately for Weaver and the Yankees, all of the scoring was done by the Jays and it began in the bottom of the third inning. Varsho hit a solo HR off Weaver, giving the Jays a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, 3B Matt Chapman hit a solo HR off Weaver, extending the Jays lead to 2-0.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, 2B Cavan Biggio hit an RBI single off reliever Greg Weissert, scoring Bichette. This insurance run gave the Jays a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, DH Brandon Belt hit a three-run HR off reliever Zach McAllister, scoring Varsho and Springer along with Belt. The Jays now led 6-0 and won by this score.
The Yankees offense was shut down by Bassitt and the Jays bullpen.
