International Women’s Day 2023: Honoring The Most Influential Women In The USA
International Women’s Day is observed on March 8 every year to commemorate the achievements and efforts of women while confronting the injustice and oppression they continue to encounter.
It is observed during the second week of Women’s History Month in the United States urges us to be more conscious and inclusive of women from various continents, countries, and communities.
Even though gender is a socially created term that develops and evolves personally throughout our lives, International Women’s Day is an inclusive and diverse celebration that welcomes us to engage in complex conversations about women, gender, inequality, and injustice.
Historically, women of color, transgender, and queer women have faced far more destructive and isolating oppression than their white, cisgender sisters. We ask you to approach your celebrations with intersectionality and intention in America and internationally.
This blog includes a list of the most influential women in the USA. Also, we have curated a few ideas on “how to celebrate international women’s day?” to honor the women in your workspace. Read till the end.
Most Influential Women In The USA In 2023
Michelle Obama
Michelle Obama is the perfect role model for women and one of the most influential women in the USA. Aside from being America’s first African-American first lady, she excelled academically, attending Princeton and Harvard. She is well-known for spearheading campaigns against childhood obesity and promoting women’s educational chances.
In 2015, she started the Let Girls Learn campaign to encourage girls to attend and stay in school and share the tales and hardships of young women worldwide. “As a first lady, a mother, and a human being, I cannot walk away from these girls,” she wrote in an essay for The Atlantic. “I vow to keep raising my voice on their behalf for the rest of my life.”
J.K. Rowling
Although novelist, screenwriter, and producer JK Rowling is today regarded as one of the world’s most powerful women, she did not always have it easy. Rowling struggled to make ends meet as a single mother in Edinburgh and spent her leisure time writing in coffee shops near her home.
Twelve publishing houses rejected her first Harry Potter manuscripts before being accepted by a smaller one. The Harry Potter books became some of the best-selling books of all time and were adapted for the big screen. Children are familiar with and enjoy the Harry Potter series, and Rowling’s writings will continue to inspire children for future generations.
Kamala Harris
No one can deny Kamala Harris’s influence in politics. She was third on Forbes’ list of the World’s Most Powerful Women. Harris is the first woman and the first Black and South Asian woman to accept the vice-presidency nomination. She is the United States Senator from California and was previously the state’s Attorney General.
Harris was born in California to immigrant parents, her mother from India and her father from Jamaica. Harris, a Howard University graduate, will be the first graduate of a historically Black college or university to be appointed vice president. She mentioned in her address that the USA is a country of possibilities for young girls.
Melinda Gates
Melinda Gates remains a business and philanthropic powerhouse. She worked as a Microsoft product manager at Expedia in 1987. She is the co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the world’s largest private philanthropic organization with a $40 billion trust endowment. This foundation improves education and addresses global poverty and health.
Melinda gave $560 million to improve contraception for developing country women in 2012. Obama awarded William and Melinda Gates the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 for their philanthropy. Gates, fifth on “Forbes’s The World’s Most Powerful Women,” continues to fund education, poverty, and sanitation worldwide.
Mary Barra
Mary Barra, the CEO of General Motors, is ranked sixth on Forbes’ list of the World’s Most Powerful Women. She is the first woman to hold this post and the first female CEO in the automobile industry. Barra has invested billions in electric vehicles, self-driving cars, and the ride-sharing service Maven.
In 2020, she switched GM’s production lines to assist Ventec Life Systems in producing critically-needed ventilators. Barra is the highest-paid CEO of a Detroit Big Three automaker, receiving $21.6 million in 2019. She received good marks for her company’s gender equity reports, with the company being one of two worldwide businesses with no gender pay gap.
Oprah Winfrey
Despite not making Forbes’ list, Oprah Winfrey has emerged as a formidable and respected female leader. Winfrey is best known for her award-winning talk show “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” which grossed $125 million in its first season.
Her style of friendly interviews, as well as her two most popular segments, “Oprah’s Book Club” and “Oprah’s Favorite Things,” continued to draw viewers. Oprah became the first black female millionaire and philanthropist. Winfrey has been a global advocate for girls’ education, and her Angel Network has earned more than $50 million for humanitarian causes.
There is no limit to mentioning the names of the most influential women. Every single girl or woman has the potential to be influential. And even they are somehow influencing the lives of the people surrounding them. We wish all the women out there a very Happy International Women’s Day.
How To Celebrate International Women’s Day At Your Workplace In 2023?
#1 Organize a learning session
Plan and invite staff to a learning session on International Women’s Day. Organizing a learning session in your company will assist in enlightening employees about the significance of the day and demonstrate to the women in your organization that they are recognized and appreciated.
Arranging a free and optional learning session could also be a good place to start for individuals who want to participate in the discourse but aren’t sure how. To further comprehend the mission #EmbraceEquity, you can source discussion videos for a hybrid workplace or invite a panel for a live Q&A.
#2 Create unique thank-you videos
Why not enlist the help of the entire company in making a thank you video? It’s more personal than simply sending an email to all personnel on the day of the event. Involving the entire team also reflects a workplace willing to support positive change.
Request that your team share their #EmbraceEquity photo or short webcam video message so that you can simply build a thank you video montage using a video editor. Drag, drag, and edit your video clips to create a slideshow video you can share with your staff immediately.
#3 Wear unisex t-shirts to #EmbraceEquity
International Women’s Day is a great opportunity to celebrate the women in your office and promote gender equity. One way to do this is by organizing a day where everyone wears unisex t-shirts with a gender equity message. Decide on a message that promotes gender equity and women’s rights.
It could be a simple slogan like “Equal rights for all” or “Women belong in the workplace.” Let everyone in the office know about the event and encourage them to participate. You could send an email, put up posters, or even make an announcement during a meeting. Everyone in the office should wear these unisex t-shirts on the big day.
This will create a sense of unity and promote the message to others who see the t-shirts. Take photos of everyone wearing the t-shirts and share them on social media or on the company’s website. This will help to spread the message even further and show that your company supports gender equity. Work together to create a more equal and inclusive workplace.
#4 Encourage more women-owned enterprises
Purchase items and services from companies owned by female entrepreneurs on International Women’s Day (and obviously throughout the year!) to help empower them. By doing so, you contribute to economic equality and empowerment. You can also use social media to review those products or services and tell people about where you purchased them.
#5 Highlight the contribution of your female staff
On this International Women’s Day, take a moment to recognize and celebrate your women employees’ valuable contribution to your company’s growth and success. From leading important projects to driving innovation and creativity, your women employees must have played an integral role in shaping the culture and achievements of your organization.
Honor the dedication, hard work, and leadership demonstrated by your women employees, and express your heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for all they do. Today and every day, stay committed to creating a more inclusive and diverse workplace where everyone can thrive and reach their full potential.
#6 Share your social media stories
It’s exciting to be spontaneous! Social media stories are an excellent way to give your followers an inside peek at how your firm is commemorating International Women’s Day. Captions for your Facebook or Instagram Stories could be considered and thankful. Don’t forget to include the hashtags #IWD2023 and #EmbraceEquity in your posts.
#7 Create a video of your intentions
Transparency can boost trust. Think about and figure out how your company can boost women’s opportunities in 2023. Try emailing these suggestions or adding a personal touch by requesting corporate executives to record the message using their webcam for free. You can also add auto-captions to make the video more accessible and easy to follow if it is muted.
#8 Organize an art competition
Allow your team’s uniqueness to show! A virtual or in-person art contest is a fun and easy way to reflect on the International Women’s Day 2023 theme. You can either organize a prize or simply clap for the winners. Ensure it is a stress-free exercise that allows employees to be creative and openly share ideas.
#9 Create a video of your intentions
Transparency can boost trust. Think about and figure out how your company can boost women’s opportunities in 2023. Try emailing these suggestions or adding a personal touch by requesting corporate executives to record the message using their webcam for free. You can also add auto-captions to make the video more accessible and easy to follow if it is muted.
#10 Contribute to a charitable cause
Consider donating to a charitable organization supporting women’s interests for International Women’s Day 2023 if you want to make a difference. It could be either local or global. Employees can also vote on which charity to donate to.
Final Thoughts
Women are indeed the most influential in every role, whether a house-maker, IT expert, politician, or player. Respect them to gain respect. Wish all the women a very Happy International Women’s Day!!

I've been thinking about Sasha and JK a lot lately. Could you please elaborate more about Sasha's downward spiral? It seemed to me that the India trip and Seojoon's assault were the big triggers. And getting stretched thin with work and school. You write with such nuances that sometimes it takes multiple reads to really understand some clues. Or maybe I'm just dumb 😅 This is all the more proof that your writing is a godsend ✨ I hope your head cold is getting better. Catching a cold sucks 🤧
Yeah, you're picking up on a lot of things! It's interesting when you look at dates and realize this both happened very quickly and was also building for a long time.
One other thing you may have noticed is that while Sasha controls the information JK has about her pretty tightly, that's somewhat mirrored with you dear readers in Little Bean. I tried to be upfront enough not to surprise people about the kind of traumatic background Sasha's had but in terms of actual impact on her life, how she handles it, what triggers or upsets her, how previous events in her life have actually impacted her, your reading experience probably mirrors JK’s: you know more than Sasha wants you to know, but you also don’t know a whole lot and other than some quirks and clear communication issues, she wasn’t doing too bad in Little Bean. She talks a little bit about Emily, a little bit about Brielle, a little about Zander, a little about Maxi. You guys don't know anything about her family even! In Flux, you're all seeing more of the cracks, more of the doubt and mistakes and struggle behavior because she's losing control of her own narrative. It ran away from her.
So a lot of the things you're calling out are the symptomatic branches that connect to deep, painful roots. Mental health can be very cyclical, and a breakdown in coping strategies and control can be due to triggers, due to stress, or due to fucking nothing, it just happens. What I mean is, you are right that all of these things are likely playing a part in her spiral... but she may have spiraled even without any of them happening.
So in bullet-list, here's some of what we know Sasha has been dealing with, including the ones you identified: - Seojoon assault - Triggering time spent among women with similar trauma in India (triggering both experiential trauma and survivor's guilt!) - Too much work! Too busy! Not enough fun! - Michele and Dom, her support network, are busy - Maxi, her ideal support network, has now lived far away from her for over a year. - JK her bf is also very busy, and obliviously gets more demanding and impatient with her, which sets off all sorts of insecurities. His comfort and confidence means he's taking on more control in the relationship; this shift in dynamic is a scary one for her, even if in a vacuum it's not necessarily a bad one! - JK her boyfriend has a life that can really contribute to her poor mental health when she's not feeling strong: he's insanely rich, insanely successful, has women all over the world pining him, he's incredibly talented. She has a lot of guilt and feelings of inadequacy she has not been able to quiet these days. - She is working on a book about trauma survival with two pushy, arrogant men who keep ignoring her voice and belittling her (though granted she also doesn't feel comfortable telling them about her first-hand experience) - She is hungry. I know she has no appetite, but her body needs food. She has not had the energy to cook any food she would get comfort food --remember her Russian cooking in the first book? I'm sure anyone who's live in countries other than their own knows that ache of needing your home comfort food and not being able to get it. - She isn't sleeping, her insomnia was already not great in the spring and now it's worse. - She's losing weight/her appearance is changing. She gets a lot of her confidence from sex and her appearance. She wants to be able to control her body. She likes it. This change in her appearance is beyond her control. - She's running into a lot of other triggers lately. Kwang-su's party was not a good place for her to be. The emotional vulnerability of letting JK go down on her was really challenging. - She's been off all medication and not under the care of a therapist for a very long time now. She doesn't even have migraine medicine yet!
Ok, that's a lot, right? She's been deeper than this before but it's still not a good place to be...

Do Dalit Lives Matter?
“Your presence irritates me,” said the deputy Registrar sitting in an air conditioned room.
India has a population of 1.3 billion. 180 million Dalits are denied human rights because of the disgraceful practice known as caste discrimination. Dalit students constantly under the threat of rustication, expulsion, defamation and discontinuation and Vemula wasn’t an exception.
The past decade saw the planned institutional murder of eight students in the Hyderabad University. In the span of four years, from 2008-2011, eighteen Dalit students ended their lives under the constant pressure upon their identity.
AIIMS, famous for producing the best doctors of the country has vile abuses written on the walls and doors of the hostel rooms where Dalit students reside. The teachers there, are partial while helping students and the ones with oppressed origins are always left out. More than 90% of the students face routine harassment at practicals or viva exams. People coming through quota are shamed, mocked for having deficiencies in education, feeble command over English, because most of them are first generation learners. Most prominent institutions lack basic structures like SC/ST cell and student support programmes and even if they do, the structures are dysfunctional. The segregation however starts as early as the school days with coloured wrist bands in classroom, forcing students coming from the oppressed communities clean toilets and upper caste children routinely boycotting food cooked by Dalits.
Dalit students forced to shift to certain hostels following harassment, abuse, violence by upper caste students, social isolation in dining rooms, sports fields, cultural events are some of the examples of informal segregation in AIIMS. 84% of students recall incidents of examiners asking about their caste, says the Thorat Committee. Teachers make students invisible by not giving enough time, discouraging in some way or the other, not allowing the student to work in labs. Students from marginalized groups are often troubled by the lack of clarity, contradictions in examinations and administrative procedures, rules that do not take account of their miseries and ofcourse the dominant castes’ favourite way with them, like ‘I am busy now’ ‘Go away,’ ‘Come tomorrow,’ etc.
The institutional murder of Rohith Vemula, was a steady process recorded by the isolation of the authorities, turning a deaf ear to his pleas, stopping his monthly stipend of twenty five thousand rupees for raising voice against the unfair segregation and suspension in September along with four others. The young scholar had also appealed to the university to allow him to die in December but the authorities maintained the ‘protocols’ of staying silent to this.
Muthukrishnan, the twenty seven year old student took away his own life. His last Facebook update was, ‘There is no equality in M.Phil./PhD admissions, there is no equality in viva-voce, there is only denial of equality….’
Senthil Kumar, a Dalit PhD student from the school of Physics consumed poison in 2008.
Madari Venkatesh, a doctoral student at Advanced Centre of Research in High Energy Materials, killed himself in 2013 for nobody from the from the School of Chemistry cared enough to supervise his research even after 2.5 years in the University.
September 4th 2014, Ankit Ambhore from IIT Bombay jumped from his hostel building. A month before, he and his parents were reportedly told by his HOD and Head of the institute’s Academic Rehabilitation Programme that Ankit, who was struggling academically would do well to drop out.
May 22 2019, Payal Selim Tadvi committed suicide facing harassment by her three seniors in Topiwala National Medical College.
In June 2015, IIT Roorkee expelled seventy three first year students from its B.Tech, IMT and M.Sc. courses- a huge chunk of them from the SC/ST communities. One student was asked by a teacher, “Why do people like you even come to IITs?”
Admissions for M.Phil. and PhD by UGC in May 2016, reduced completely on oral terms, was the move that Muthukrishnan wrote against in his Facebook post. His parting words quoting Ambedkar were, ‘When equality is denied, everything is denied.’
Here’s the list of Dalit student’s though the actual number is much more high than this.
• M. Shrikant, final year, B.Tech, IIT Bombay, 1st Jan 07
• Ajay S. Chandra, integrated PhD, Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc), Bangalore – 26 Aug, 07

Do Dalit lives not matter? Where does the sympathy go when Dalits suicide? Where does the façade of All Lives Matter go? Why aren’t paragraphs demonising reservation not address inhumanity the social segregation?
If all lives matter, why isn’t it education for all? Where are the equal opportunities dear?

WAYS TO IMPRESS COLLEGE ADMISSION TEAM
By Brig. (Dr.) Ajay Mehta (Prof Human Resources at JK Business School, Gurgaon)
Studying in a well-reputed college is the steppingstone towards a good career ahead. Colleges are known not only for its infrastructure, but its lineage, pedagogy and above all the opportunities it provides for career prospects.
Over 3 lakhs prospective candidates of CAT/MAT are vying to secure an entry in the top 50 or 60 colleges pan India each having a capacity of 120 or soper batch. On a rough estimate, there are approximately 3,500 plus management colleges of varying pedigree. Simple statistics show that competition is stiff and the students need to make a mark on the admission team to secure a seat in a college of repute. As it is often quoted ‘You cannot get a second chance to make the first impression’
So, what to do!!!!!
Usually good colleges follow a two/three tier selection process, which includes an initial talk with the admission counsellors, followed by a short written aptitude to see your analytical and written expression, a group discussion and finally culminating into a interaction with a panel of faculty or one senior faculty member. So, if this is the menu let’s see how we can go about this business of business school.
Prepare yourself well for the management aptitude test which ever you decide. The late planners land up in a soup usually landing up in colleges which they regret later. Some of these exams are CAT/MAT/NMAT/CMAT and their likes. While some are college specific, the first three cover a large spectrum of colleges pan India. Getting a good score is important as this is the first impression the college gets about a student’s academic acumen, besides the scores obtained in school and graduation.
Your preliminary action with college admission team-Be polite and ask relevant questions related to pedagogy, curriculum, fee structure, hostel facilities etc. Get a date for visiting the college or request for Skype /Video/Telephonic interview depending on your schedule. Make sure you are available at the scheduled date and time. Opportunity missed is opportunity lost.
Preparing yourself for interaction – Whether distance or physically interview, ensure you are decently attired.
Keep abreast with your domain knowledge. You may not be able recall all the answers, but not replying to any, will leave a poor impression. Professionalism is judged by a good technical knowledge too.
General awareness is more important than anything else. Businesses are affected by geopolitical development across the world, and saying that you are not interested in political matters or matters of governance, does not show you in good light. This knowledge will help you in your group discussions too.
Hobbies and interests-Merely listing out a few of them in your resume just to impress is most counterproductive action students often do. If you have shown interest in a game then a little knowledge about the rules, some records, important players, its popularity in the country etc shows your ability to go into details. Same goes for music, movies etc.
Ask informed questions-The chat with faculty should be interactive. Read the website and keep a few questions ready on subjects like career prospects, course contents and its value, personality development etc. It impresses the admission team to admit a well-informed student with a questioning mind. Avoid asking packages and remunerations.
In the end a pragmatic and pleasant demeanour scores over other shortcomings. Keep a positive attitude and you can surely secure a place for yourself in your two year journey of learning and earning.

A Good Way to Change the University Culture
University Culture Transformation
Feeding a culture transformation
What is the university culture? How does it tie into performance and innovation? University culture is an amalgamation of academic ethics, spirits and outlooks. The manifestation of different values, behaviour and interactions on campus from students and faculty contribute towards a thriving culture. This, in turn, contributes to better performance and paves the way for innovation.
What determines a healthy culture?
University culture transformation is shaped by several factors, one of which is effective communication. Leaders who communicate properly with teachers and teachers who, in turn, do the same with each other can help spread ideas and actions. Shared values are another factor that can shape culture. They’re adopted by the university’s leaders, student community and staff, which strengthens the connection between one another.
Enhancing performance and innovation through culture
Culture doesn’t just strengthen connections and spread shared values and actions; it also correlates with better performance. Since everyone has a well-tuned sense of direction and lives by shared values, they can perform better.
Culture opens the door to innovation as well. It blends different perspectives that can help form guiding principles to foster innovation. Through a shared drive towards progress, universities can translate new ideas into reality.
We, at JK Business School, are built on the principle of multiculturalism. Students hail from various parts of India and bring with them new ideas and perspectives. The university has a policy of accepting no more than 10% of the batch size of students from different states. This ensures that there’s solid diversity on campus. It also has a 60:40 gender ratio, which is one of the best among management schools in the country. The diversity can be seen in our faculty too. The varied industry experience and vast academic experience of faculty members enrich the learning environment.
Our emphasis on building a healthy culture sets us apart from other management schools. Aside from helping students become business professionals, we strive to enable them to become thinkers and visionaries – effectively ensuring a brighter future for them and the country.
