Jay was a literal traitor, she just joined Chip to get into the pirate world but then she became friends with Chip and Gillion and they went through so much together and took an oath to be a crew and co-captains AND SHE WAS A TRAITOR THROUGH ALL OF THAT! She was lying but she was really only lying to herself towards the end, even Chip could tell that she didn’t really believe in the navy and the role she was playing anymore

Speaking of Barry being able to read Leonard Snart scarily well, imagine that Barry notices how Snart reacts to people Barry knows, and files that away in his opinions of that person

Barry is in the cortex with someone he finds kind of annoying but harmless, Snart walks in for Definitely-Not-Flirting-While-Doing-Business Reasons, and starts lowkey acting like this guy is an Immediate Threat that he's trying to act cool around to not set him off. And Barry immediately knocks like 5 points off of the "how much do i trust this guy" ranking. Subtly starts telling him less things, looks into what he's doing on the downlow, treats him as potentially suspicious And turns out... The guy does have bad intentions

Leonard comes in and meets some of Barry's new friends/coworkers, and clearly seems to mark one of them as more trustworthy/less of a threat than everyone else. And when Barry needs help or someone to confide in, he goes to that person over everyone else

Barry comes in to Saints and Sinners and sees a regular he's run into before, but hasn't seen interact with Snart. He thought the guy might be pretty cool. But today he walks into them talking, and Immediately sees that Snart is closed off, jumpy, does NOT like that guy in his space. And Barry immediately takes cues off of that, turns the guy down when he later asks to have drinks together next time Barry drops by Saints

If Snart seems unnerved by someone Barry knows, Barry trusts his instincts. Even if Leonard never says anything to Barry out loud, he still takes note of that. If Snart likes someone, or just thinks they're reliable, Barry will trust that instinct.

Even if Snart doesn't say his feelings out loud, Barry trusts him so innately that he will listen to Snart's instincts when it's clear he's feeling a type of way

When I first heard There Are Other Ways, I was a little disappointed by the fact that Circe didn’t successfully seduce Odysseus, considering the huge Greek Mythology nerd I am.

Bear with me.

Then, I played the saga, and that song, for my wonderful mother tonight. About halfway through, I gasped.

The story is accurate to the Homeric version: he confronts her (clandestinely at first), she fights back, he pulls the sword.

But she’s not afraid. Of course she isn’t.

Why would an immortal being, with the rage and power of commanding a million different beasts if her Plan A goes down, be afraid of a measly man with a flimsy toothpick to her throat, just because he ate a flower and said “Be afraid!”?

That’s right! She wouldn’t.

Because Jay didn’t submit to the blatant misogyny of the tale.

Read this article for incredible information, if you please. It changed the way I saw Circe’s story.

If Circe cowered, simply because a man held a sword to her throat, only then would she have seduced him (if we’re going ultra-canon with the storyline, which Jay isn’t), which would have, yet again, thrown off the balance of power.

Circe could give less of a shit about the sword, in the song. She thinks he’s pretty hot, and maybe she’s manipulating him into coming to bed with her so she can trick him, so she offers a tryst or two. Here, if you read the article, she is throwing off the nature of men and women by being the active sexual partner.

He refuses, too enamored with Penelope, and shuns his curiosity in her. You can hear how it pains him, it’s a struggle to say no. But he does. He’s strong, he’s no god, cheating on his wife for the sake of sex appeal. He’s just a man.

He begs. That’s the thing that got me. Not her, him.

“So I beg you, Circe, grant us mercy, and let us puppets leave~”

Then, Circe offers to help him — not because she’s restoring the nature of being submissive — but because she has empathy and compassion for the man. She helps him because he’s proved himself, to be weary, and faithful, and human. She knows the feeling of love.

So, yes. So many layers. Like an onion, worthy of making you cry.

1. Jay is spitting in the face of misogyny and gender roles, and having her help him because she empathizes. Because she’s in power.

2. It’s sort of a jab, if interpreted a certain way, at sexual assault. He says no, and he holds true to it. Even though everything is telling him to give in, to let it happen, he refuses, and remains as sure as he can be.

3. It shows how very human Odysseus is. Athena forgot it, and somehow held him to it. Even the men forget it. But he never does. There is only so much he can do.

This is my favorite saga so far.

Thinking about Chip being asked what his last name is after an introduction and him pausing for a moment, not because he doesn’t have one, but because he can’t decide if he should say James, Rose, Lafayette, Ferin, or Tidestrider. And in that moment he knows he’s loved and has a family and belongs somewhere, not by any arbitrary means, but because he’s wanted and loved and cared for

the riptide pirates doing oddly domestic things.

they make breakfast all together. none of them are all that good at it and earl screams at them for burning food but they do it with smiles, grinning and laughing while they make inedible slop.

once chip woke up to the smell of burning and yelling only to find out gillion and jay burnt pancakes meant for him, a little surprise. he ate them anyway (and regretted it immensely) and drey bullied him for weeks.

they do each other's hair.

gillion particularly loves braiding, once jay taught him how to do it and every second he can find, he weaves little braids into chip's hair alongside the beads he has, and braids all of jay's hair into one of two braids, because she'll complain about the how frizzy it gets otherwise. chip's head in gillion's lap while the two talk on and on about whatever they can think of, gillion weaving his hands through his hair with love and care. the occassional butt in from jay as she does gillion's hair, because she's content listening unless her co-captains are being idiots. queen demands chip specifically do her hair, so they can match, something he's happy to do. gryffon never lets them close to his fur, but on one specific night they manage to convince him and give him bows and everything, just because they can.

they sleep together.

literally.

on nights where things are hard for jay, when she wakes in the middle of the night screaming, she'll find gillion and chip are already at her side ready to help her fall back asleep. they make her feel safe, and it goes for the rest of the co-captains.

when ollie was on the ship, he taught them games they've never heard of or games they were all too busy growing up too fast to ever get to play.

they're a family.

a weird, unconventional family, not built by blood but by the bonds and love and trust their crew has gained over time. the riptide pirates are a family. and they love the little moments with one another more than anything.
