It's been a hot minute, hope you're all doing well When I finally got all the characters done I couldn't not slap them on a page together to contextualize their heights at least haha
The good thing about not posting for a year is there's a bit of a backlog so I'll queue that up for you guys. It was an interesting year to say the least. Some stuff I can't show you in case my team sees it lol
Had a few big projects that were quite outside my comfort zone but a fun go nonetheless

I'd argue that a lot of them can recognize ptsd in other people, but not themselves. Also, some people on that cope side are doing it better than others.

Here's a question for all you writers out there; which of your protags would make for the best president, and which should be kept away from political office at all costs?

Ivander - Is this character beholden to a higher power?
Landanium - Are there any diseases unique to this world?
Nace - How does organized crime work here? Who is currently on top of the criminal underworld?
Heya! Thanks for the ask! (From this writing ask game based on your series)
I'm actually gonna answer for SOTL because it's more relevant despite being a tad underdeveloped.
Ivander - Is this character beholden to a higher power?
Saira, Amani, Faivish are the ones most devoted to a higher power in terms of how religious they are, but I haven't figured out a lot of details except that Amani technically does have a storyline where she is beholden to a different higher power: a jinn whom she promised freedom.
Landanium - Are there any diseases unique to this world?
Yep! A few related to fae and other magical creatures. Most notably, Alberto has a disease that makes his wings slowly become increasingly fragile over time, so he's unable to fly.
Nace - How does organized crime work here? Who is currently on top of the criminal underworld?
You're lucky I have the bare bones lol. Edvard, who for context is the Rumpelstiltskin stand-in, is kinda the person at the top doing the organized fraud, theft, kidnapping, demanding protection payments, etc. Y'know, organized crime stuff. That may change, his status, but he's definitely involved.
It would work in a similar fashion, but there would be more magical items or potions or drugs and the like involved in. Magic also means punishments would be much more severe and creative.
Hope this was satisfactory. Thanks for the ask!

Terimakasih, untukmu.

In my world, curses are treated like a magical subset of diseases that spontaneously happen sometimes. Magic is also sort of radioactive, so sorcerers can get speed cancer and drop dead if they overdo it. Either way, love this concept!
I am thinking so much about magical illnesses today. Specifically illnesses brought about by magic, as a side effect. Like you know how agent orange exposure in war can cause Parkinson’s years later? Fire magic that doesn’t kill you unless you’re caught directly in the blast but twenty years later you find yourself choking on smoke, your scars burning. Poison or plant magic to hinder armies that leave seeds/spores/some trace in your body that grows vines around your organs if you make it out alive. Etc. please give me more ideas if you have them!

Character Interaction Tag
Thank you for the tag (x2) @illarian-rambling , to keep this simple I'll just use one of my OCs. Posting this again because I accidentally posted before I finished.
Rules: post the OCs of the people who tagged you and one of your OCs and say how yours would interact with theirs
Katie's OC #1: Ivander Montane is a 30 year old corrupt detective from the trade city of Unity. He has blue blood and double-pointed ears, wears fancy suits, and walks with a cane. His estranged family runs the banks of Unity, however he left them years ago, and in doing so, broke a divine contract, which left him cursed to slowly and painfully be transmuted into mist over the course of many years. Personality-wise, he's kind of a privileged shithead. He's got the catty attitude and love of gossip of a middle school girl, and can insult your outfit just as acutely. He doesn't have a sincere bone in his body and is afraid of any form of intimacy. However, deep down, he really just wants a friend and to not be in pain anymore. Show him the slightest hint of compassion and he will crumble. His hobbies include being a hater, fashion, and marksmanship (he's a crack shot with a rune rifle). All in all, he's got the snark of a drag queen, the heart of a lonely noir detective, and a body that's been through a cheese grater.
Katie's OC #2: Djek Kagura is a young man (19 in the first book, 23 in the second two) with a shifty appearance, red eyes, and a constant squint due to poor vision. He grew up on the streets after his parents tossed him out to cut down on mouths to feed, only to later join the brutal Tunnel Wasp smuggling gang, which he later split from due to his aversion to violence and need to do what's right. As a person, he's always quick with a joke or snide comment, loves sarcasm, and lies like a fish breathes water. His bad habit is that he loves to annoy people on purpose. At his core is a deep sense of self-loathing and abandonment issues, but he covers these with humor. He tends to try to find peaceful solutions to situations and has a bit of a bleeding heart, even if he pretends to be tough. His friends mean the world to him and he's loyal to the point getting himself hurt in fights he can't win. Also, he's surprisingly in touch with people's emotions and always trys to make them feel better, even he does it with a bad joke or by irritating them to action. He has a weak form of sorcery, specializes in shadow magic, and has incorrigibly sticky fingers.
My OC: (As of the start of Book 1) Narul is a 23 year-old slave at the Palace of Labisa, the Great City by the Lake. He is a forestfolk, a person or group of people who have been mutated or altered by the effects of wild or ambient magic. His birth mother was a priestess, his father is a mystery. He was adopted by an enslaved woman as an infant, thus how he ended up in the servitude of King Hutbari. He is a giant of a man, literally, at just a hair under nine feet tall. He is additionally quite bulky, much much larger than even the biggest human. He is so large that the door into the slave quarters had to be reconstructed just to fit him as he grew up. Aside from his size he is also just a bit rough in appearance, hairy and broad, picture a DnD Dwarf, just sized way up.
He is inhumanly strong, a fact that causes him a great deal of distress. Because of his size and strength, Narul has the potential to be quite dangerous to normal humans, as he has been repeatedly reminded of since his childhood. Narul has a great deal of anxiety around his body and his potential to accidently hurt others, as such he is quite timid and careful. He has a tendency to mumble when he talks, which unfortunately due to his low voice, often makes it sound like he is growling. He is a gentle person, he likes flowers and abhors violence. He cries relatively easily and gets easily anxious or overwhelmed.Despite all of this he is fiercely loyal and kind. He doesn’t talk much but loves to listen to others.
His fatal flaw is a healthy dose of self-doubt and self-loathing. Narul hates his body, it scares him, and he believes that it scares others. He is often self-deprecating, though not in a joking way. He feels an intense jealousy towards those around him that are able to live normal lives and pursue normal relationships.
How they would interact: Ivander’s propensity for expensive clothes, his snarky attitude, and his privileged attitude is something that Narul is fairly used to, Ivander would fit in well with Labisian Nobility. Upon first being introduced, I imagine that Narul would be polite but ultimately not particularly interested in interacting with Ivander as a person. However, I think upon realizing that Ivander is having his own issues with his body (that pesky mist curse), Narul would begin to empathize. In a funny way, I think Ivander’s cocky exterior and his hidden longing for a friend would remind Narul of Ninma, and even though Ivander is older, I think some of Narul’s fatherly instincts would kick in.
Narul would get along fine with Djek. Personality-wise, Djek seems very similar to Narul’s adopted brother and best-friend, Suru. Both are witty, sarcastic, and quick to make a joke. The big difference between Suru and Djek is that Suru doesn’t have that sense of self-loathing. Suru is quite aware of his flaws and is happy with who he is, even if he isn’t happy with his situation (also Suru is a scrawny guy, with 0 magic and 0 fighting skills, Suru couldn’t hurt a fly not from want of trying, but because in a fight the fly would probably win.) Narul would enjoy having Djek around, so long as Djek didn’t pick on him too much. Narul would eventually try to help with that self-loathing, though with how awkward Narul is, and how deeply his own sense of self-loathing is, it seems doubtful how much he could actually help.

Rewrite Tag
My line: For a brief moment, Ivander considered what would happen if he said yes. He would sit in her compartment, the razors piercing through his flesh all the more sharp for the need to laugh through them. He might put a hand on her knee and pray it wouldn’t leave a blue stain as blood seeped through his gloves. She might reach to touch his face, only to be horrified as what she felt failed to match up to what she saw.
My rewrite: For the briefest moment he thought about accepting her proposal. Reality soon swept in and destroyed whatever joy Ivander temporarily got; if it wasn't the consistent mind numbing pain he was in, it was his face. What the woman saw was not what he looked like, and he knew both would leave the whole experience worse than the short lived melancholy from rejection.
Your line: A man's tan hand swept across a giant chalkboard as he took the other one and pulled a joint out of his mouth. Smoke lazily poured from his lips as he placed the eraser back into position. His tired, hazed baby blues then scanned the desk where pastel colored papers were in an unorganized pile with an ashtray next to the mess.
I'll tag: @somethingclevermahogony, and YOU. Please feel free to tag me in your post.

We Will Be Watching
[Image description: A grey scale digital painting with pops of accent colours, primarily yellow, of a person floating suspended in front of a giant lightning filled eye. There are purple/pink lines holding him in place and connecting him to the four scenes below; a tabaxi covering her ears in front of a clock face, a dwarven woman looking up at a massive tree, a dragonborn man kneeling in front of a grave stone, and an elf reaching out towards a castle he is floating above. The following images are close ups of each scene and one in which only the eye and floating man are seen with the text 'We Will Be Watching'.
Description end.]
So it was my DM's bday in January and I decided why not try to capture his homebrewed session in a picture. How hard could it be? Like 100 hours later, I finally had this to give him haha I wanted to play around with perspective to give a really of kilter, dreamish feel to it. My tone work still needs a lot of work but I'm really happy with how touchable Ivander's coat came out ^u^
Check the reblogs for the speedpaints and the context of the session is in the video descriptions if you're after that.

Ok the thought randomly popped into my head, but how do you think the core MG trio (Astra, Mashal, and Ivander) would do aboard the Seven Stations? Like, how many nobles do you think a mage, a robot, and a cursed man would draw the attention of?
(No pressure to answer in any timely fashion, but the image of those three trying to figure out a space station is amusing me immensely)
As it happens, I’m procrastinating on another project I’m working on right now, so I can answer this right away :)
Astra would not be in luck. The minute she pulled out one of those ribbons (or any other form of magic), she’d have a target painted on her back. Astra’s magic is ridiculously powerful and flexible by Seven Stations standards - every noble who’s even willing to consider killing people for their magic would be hoping to get her. And Astra’s certainly competent, but I don’t think she could defeat enough guards (especially armed with things like beam cutters) to be able to escape. If she were somehow able to hide her magic, she might be able to make a living as an engineer on Fourth Station, but she’d be living on borrowed time. Tbf, she’d probably find the stations super interesting, but she wouldn’t have a lot of a chance to investigate it.
Mashal would… uh… also probably not be doing great. He wouldn’t be killed outright - magic in the Seven Stations doesn’t work the way Illarian magic works, so they wouldn’t recognize him as magical. He’d probably be scooped up by the nearest set of nobles and sooner or later end up on Fourth Station being inspected. Depending on who got ahold of him, he’d have different experiences. If Authority (or Winston) got him, he’d be in for a very thorough and extremely invasive investigation. If Ruthlessness got him, she’d try to intimidate him and probably dismantle him. His best luck would be if Ambition got at him - she’d still want to study him quite carefully but would be willing to question him rather than start with taking him apart, and she might even be willing to try to negotiate with whoever had captured Astra to try to (temporarily) free her to interrogate her about Mashal. She’d probably still kill her, but Mashal would be in a better place than with any of the others.
Ivander would probably, honestly, do pretty well. Due to the way magic works, his curse would be considered more of a medical condition than a magical thing, and the illusion pin, while clearly magical, wouldn’t necessarily be assumed to be made by him. He also has good enough polite society manners, so he’d probably be able to keep the nobles in a good mood. He’d probably end up on Seventh Station offering to spy for Ricinus or Belladonna in exchange for pain medication and skin grafts to help his curse. I don’t think he’d care for the stations very much, but I think he’d like what he can get because of them.
As a bonus, I think Avymere and Elsind would also do okay. Avymere is a noble and a diplomat, they’d be able to charm the other nobles (they don’t take too poorly to other nobles when they meet the elvish rulership, so they’d probably be fine with Avymere). Elsind would definitely be investigated and studied on Seventh Station, but Ricinus has bigger priorities than an unknown creature, and Belladonna wouldn’t be the sort to hurt them. Elsind’s chances aren’t as good as Avymere’s, but I think they’d both do okay.
Thank you for the ask! I had a lot of fun with this :)
