I understand that literature nerd Jason Todd is kind of overblown in fanon compared to it's actual presence in canon (a few issues during his pre (and post?)crisis Robin tenure that highlight it) BUT consider that I think it's hilarious if the unhinged gun toting criminal has strong opinions on poetry
#ramblings of a lunatic#dc comics#Jason Todd#batfamily#it's just a fun quirk! it's a fun lil detail and I simply cannot slight ppl for enjoying and incorporating it into works#like obviously jason isn't the only one. I'm a big believer in the batfam having over lapping interests they refuse to bond over#i know dick canonically used the robin hood stories (which are pretty flowery in their language far as i can tell) as inspo for Robin#and i know babs was a librarian and even tho her area of nerddom is characterized as more computery she probably knows quite a lot-#-about literature as well#duke is a hobbyist writer i believe? i saw a fan mention that- which if so is great and I hope he's also a nerd#(i mean he is canonically. i remember him being a puzzle nerd in his introduction. but i mean specifically a lit nerd)#damian called Shakespeare boring but also took acting classes so i think he's more of a theatre kid.#Tim's a dropout and i don't think he's ever shown distinct interest in english lit and i can't remember for Steph?#I'm ngl my brain hyperfocused on musician Steph i forget some of her other interests I'm sorry (minus softball and gymnastics!)#and then Cass had her whole (non linear but it's whatevs) arc about literacy and learning to read#went from struggling to read in batgirl 00 to memorizing Shakespeare in 'tec and is now an avid read in batgirls!#she's shown reading edgar allen poe but we don't know if it's his short stories or his poems#point to all of the above being: i know Jason's not the only lit nerd in the batfam#but also i do need him to be writing poetry in his spare time and reading and reviewing it#jason at the next dead robins society meeting: evening folks today I'll be assigning all of us poems based on laika the space dog#damian and steph who have been kidnapped and brought to jasons warehouse to hangout: LET US GO BITCH#speaking of^ random poem i think jason would like: space dog by alan shapiro#wake up one morning in an unfamiliar more mature body with a profound sense of abandonment. the last four lines. mmm tasty

Who wants to get in a time machine and go tell him?
from that 2005 R&J essay by David Tennant

Saw a production of Romeo and Juliet recently where the actors never actually left the stage but sat in the shadows in the scenes they weren't in, watching the action. It made everything feel really claustrophobic and also managed to visualise the fact that every single character in the play is complicit in its tragedy precisely because they are more content to sit and watch than make an effort to change. All of them perpetuate the cycle of violence that traps the two lovers and leaves them with nowhere and no one to run to. In the Capulet's tomb, Juliet ran at her silent onlookers, desperate, pleading, looking for a way to escape. But the citizens of Verona only really understand one language and that language doesn't speak of change, it demands violence. Juliet knows what is expected of her, this young girl with a knife in her hand and death on her lips. Her chance at a life that transcends the horror of everyday brutality and the terrible tedium of misery and pain is dead on the floor at her feet and none of her family members, her friends, the people who claim to care for her, will let her out alive.
#shakespeare#romeo and juliet#one of my favourite plays actually#also this production ended with that scene on the capulet's tomb#which made it even more brutal#like give me some time to process please#i cant clap whilst sobbing

my pretentious trait is that i get richard ii and coriolanus, RIP to the haters but they're literally the two best plays in their respective categories because the leads are That Good in my opinion
#critics: who even are these people#me: gay obviously#no but imo they're two of the characters that speak the most truth in shakespeare#id say hamlet gets some of that as well (but im still warming to that one bit by bit) and julius caesar#and usually there's a scene in aaalmost any shakespeare play in which one or more of the female characters spit truth#(and then it's just about whether they're respected and/or believed in that truth-telling)#but these two. margaret is also underrated imo but i imagine thats because she's stuck in the middle of henry vi#but yeah i think coriolanus and richard ii wear their hearts on their sleeves and idk. it seems to alienate for some reason#shakespeare#coriolanus#richard ii#richard ii literally spelling out the whole Theme of every play that chronologically comes next *let's speak of graves*#and for her to be Disrespected like this?#i once did you common cry of curs over and over for the satisfaction. after All That!!!#the Poetry of these plays!!!!!!!!!! the meta thematic throughlines of them!!!!!!!! the Scale of them!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Shakespeare play tier list!
(Slightly terrifying to see how many I still have to read, seeing as I've read 25 already...)
Here's the tier maker if you'd like to make your own:
#shakespeare#tier list#rb with your rankings!#you are more than welcome to insult me for this#but i WILL die on the hill that 1 Henry IV and 3 Henry VI are masterpieces on the same level as Hamlet and Macbeth#also Romeo & Juliet is not only good but one of the best Shakespeare plays#I feel like I'm going to get flamed for putting Midsummer so low#I'm SORRY#I just don't vibe with it as much as the rest of them!#As You Like It and Othello are very likely to get placed higher once I reread them in more depth#I'm already second-guessing myself about 2 Henry IV...#I think I like it more than that...

I will never make this because it would be for an audience of one (me) but ever since reading "If we Were Villains" (story about serious drama kids in college who perform shakespeare and deal with a murder) I have been entertaining the thought of a crack fic crossover with High School Musical The Musical The Series where the staff decides they will no longer put on shakespeare after the tragic accident that happened at Thanksgiving, because Shakespeare plays would only increase the tension and drama. So they hire Ms. Jen who decides their spring play will actually be High School Musical (which exists in the 90s in this universe) and it ruins the vibe so much that everyone gives up on being dark and mysterious because they're universally pissed at Ms Jen for making them learn choreoraphed basketball dancing.
#if we were villains is actually genuinely good and has actual literary worth and pulls from shakespeare in an intelligent meaningful way#but unfortunately all i can do is comedy so this is the only fan content i have to offer :(#THE THING IS iwwv is just hsmtmts if it hsmtmts was good and also they committed crimes#they utilize the same parallel of casting choices with real life drama which I love#umm so casting: Meredith would be Sharpay Obvi. I think it would be really funny if James was cast as Ryan bc they hate eachother and would#have to pretend to be siblings working together. And I think ashley tisdale and Lucas Gabreel actually didn't get along when filming#also i love the thought of Ms Jen looking at James and going “i know what you are”#HOWEVER it would be more interesting if james was Chad to Oliver's Troy (which is really just reversing their Romeo and Juliet moment)#bc chad is like nooo don't do theater... stick with me and do basketball... but it would be Coded Subtextually#Unfortunately Wren would be typecast as Gabriella and I don't think that would cause drama bc I don't believe James actually liked her!#I think it was comp het bc she was very sweet and nonthreatening as opposed to Meredith's big flirting energy so she would be a “safe” crus#lets lean into that actually. this gives Wren a chance to have a personality (bc I enjoy this book but it is not good at fleshing out women#So oliver and Wren spend more time together and kind of talk about James a little and Wren is like yeah James is very sweet#and I like him but it feels so hard to get him to feel comfortable with me... i guess he's just closed off and doesn't talk much#we also get to see more of her personality and interests maybe she's like I relate to gabriella because I also like to Read :) feminism#and oliver is like Hmm That Is Not My Experience With Him perhaps our bond is deeper and James does like me Hm#And then Meredith can flirt with him as Sharpay and James gets pissed and in character gets very intense about how Troy can't join THEATER#that's why he's upset and sad bc sharpay represents theater and only that reason and nothing else and he isn't in love with oliver At All#Alexander can be Ryan now since James is Chad (and he's also Gay) and Filippa can be Kenzie bc they're both queer coded#Anyway at rehearsal one day Meredith and James and Oliver are having their fighting over troy moment and then Meredith stops and is like#wait guys. This musical is so freaking stupid. why are we even doing this#and their mutual frustration at their art being turned into a farce is enough to bond them together and they're like#we need to focus on our REAL enemy: ms Jen#and then they hatch a scheme and it's probably like. They dump a bucket of fake blood on her at opening night a la carrie#and then put on their own rebellious production... it still has to be a musical because i like musicals#families with children are in the audience and they're like OK FOLKS! HERE'S ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW!#if we were villains#iwwv#hsmtmts#high school musical the musical the series

I always felt like the crozier/hickey speeches before the hanging in ep8 mirrored the Brutus/mark antony speeches from Julius Caesar except I can’t decide which is which
In terms of role and purpose crozier is more Brutus and hickey is mark antony I guess… But crozier’s refrain of “that was Mr hickey” reminds me of mark Antony’s “but Brutus said he was ambitious, and Brutus is an honourable man”
#the terror#francis crozier#cornelius hickey#Shakespeare#Julius Caesar#mark Antony’s speech#hickey def had more of the silver tongue like Antony did#I feel like the vibe and dynamic of crozier’s and hickey’s speeches DEF parallel those two#esp with hickey pretending to bth humble people’s champion#sticking up for his fellow man against the ones with power#when he knows what happened#anyway would welcome more thoughts on this

#i have like. a few hours left to do this. more if i let myself work on it on sunday#i have already drawn the bonus image version#but if i use the tee for one of the costumes that's actually required for class it *might* save a bit of time/creative energy lol#if you don't get the context check the post i reblogged before this lol#my costume history homework is designing costumes for two predecided characters (i picked ham and oph) in like 12 different time periods#and ever since we got into the latter half of the 20th century it's been a bit tougher to plan#because like. I absolutely hate when modern shakespeare adaptations put every character whose involved in politics in a business suit#but for the last few time periods (now decades basically) I thought I had to do it and then I was like 'wait no that's dumb'#so now i am just ignoring that aspect of the plot. he spent a nonzero amount of time on the run with pirates he can wear a t-shirt

Dropping in to say I watched the 2011 Much Ado About Nothing and I’m a changed person. New piece of favorite media unlocked. I’m gonna be insufferable about it to my friends. I loved the 2019 version clips you posted and I’m definitely going to try and find a full version of that as well. Also want to read Hamlet bc everything I read about it sounds insane. I liked Shakespeare as a kid until high school english made me absolutely hate it, so thanks for helping me get back into it lol.
YESSSSSSSSSSS 2011 MUCH ADO MY BELOVEDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!! also you can watch the 2019 version here on archive.org (absolutely fantastic benedick/beatrice and also my favorite rendition of hero!)
#my process for consuming a shakespeare play for Real is i pick an adaptation to watch first#then i pull up the text and watch it again but like pausing to make my notes on characters/lines/production choices/etc#sometimes i go onto genius.com for the annotations for added context/meanings to help if i don't get what's going on#(that worked best for hamlet though the other ones are a bit more sparse)#then i watch it a third time w all the knowledge in my brain. Then i move onto watching a bunch of other productions#much ado#i was fortunate enough to have my shakespeare enjoyment be based off of english/literature teachers i had that were really good#i got really attached to hamlet when i was learning it in high school then i got really attached to it again when i learned abt metatheater#but yea the most common thing i see re: bad english teachers putting ppl off shakespeare is that they make u read the text#instead of watching it. Or if they do make u watch an adaptation it's one that sucks and is boring#so like on my own time i make sure the adaptation im learning the text off is interesting and also good

Coriolanus in a full circle amphitheater, Roman colosseum style. He is the only character on “stage.” There is no set. He cannot avoid the audience’s eyes. He disdains us, he fears us. We won’t stop looking at him.
All the other voices speak from somewhere in the audience. His costume changes happen on stage. He never leaves the stage. His actor is forced to be as vulnerable as he is.
#shakespeare#Coriolanus#thanks pfy on the hamlet server for the one-man-show Coriolanus idea#I feel like this play is more fucked up than I initially thought!
