I just love it when video games let you do really stupid shit that kills you immediately. I love being like "oh this is a terrible idea" and being able to do it and then die. It's good game design.

As much as I adore conlangs, I really like how the Imperial Radch books handle language. The book is entirely in English but you're constantly aware that you're reading a "translation," both of the Radchaai language Breq speaks as default, and also the various other languages she encounters. We don't hear the words but we hear her fretting about terms of address (the beloathed gendering on Nilt) and concepts that do or don't translate (Awn switching out of Radchaai when she needs a language where "citizen," "civilized," and "Radchaai person" aren't all the same word) and noting people's registers and accents. The snatches of lyrics we hear don't scan or rhyme--even, and this is what sells it to me, the real-world songs with English lyrics, which get the same "literal translation" style as everything else--because we aren't hearing the actual words, we're hearing Breq's understanding of what they mean. I think it's a cool way to acknowledge linguistic complexity and some of the difficulties of multilingual/multicultural communication, which of course becomes a larger theme when we get to the plot with the Presgar Translators.

Charlie putting the padlock on the bridge for him and Tao was actually one of my favourite scenes of the season. The way this scene shows the importance of friendship and puts platonic relationships on the same level as romantic ones is so fucking refreshing to me. Taking such an inherently romantic action and just making it not romantic in the slightest but about Charlie's love for his best friend that is equally important to the love he has for his boyfriend is so beautiful and important to me.

Heartstopper obviously does put a huge focus on different queer romantic relationships but I absolutely adore the way the second season portrays queer friendships and doesn't make them seem less worth than the romantic ones.

so I'm playing cassette beasts

And I'm loving it, like the exploration is pretty good, i was worried it would pull some of the stuff crystal quest did (not saying crystal quest is bad, just not my cup of tea in some regards) the characters are pretty good, the monsters are good and the boss fights feel like an anime, the fact the lyrics only kick in when you fuse makes it feel like the daus ex machina of a tough fight against something near incompressible in nature and forcing that monster into the wall as you shrug off there attacks and laugh at what strategy thay still use in vain.

If you've not played it yet i highly recommend it if you like something like pokemon.

The theme is all these powerful demons who lost someone they loved or were trying to save/protect the one they loved and they went to great, often deadly lengths to do it.

What would you do for the one you love? Perhaps destroy a few realms and cause chaos. Yeah.
